It was bright and early on the morning after the feast. A fresh, 8 am class as the Headmaster had warned just the night before. How many had taken him seriously and sought to get a good night's sleep was yet to be seen but Trent himself had gone to bed at a decent hour and felt...well...great.
The rain had come and gone, the grass was newly watered, the sun was up and offering a bit of warmth in the Scottish country side. It was the perfect set up and left the man more excited to begin the day's lesson.
Hard to believe, but somehow he'd missed teaching over the summer. Missed springing surprises on them and watching them react--quick on their feet or entirely malfunctioning.
Malachi stood facing the lake with his back turned to the castle. He inhaled deeply, enjoying the early morning while he still could. Before they got down to business. The man felt perfectly at peace. A glance down at his watch told him the students would be arriving soon.
Well rested, he hoped. On time, he hoped even more. The absence of a door to drag them out was no guarantee things would be any better.

Truthfully, having the class outside by the lake was quite nice, and relaxing even. Still, as she stood there she couldn’t help but grin when Headmaster Trent said a greeting back to her, seeeeee he seemed to appreciate the greetings. Maybe going to Beauxbaton for so many years had been a good thing after all?
The brunette listened to the topics that her fellow classmates had brought up and nodded at this one and that one. Noah’s especially got a little nod, as it had made her immediately think of how she had almost been pulled into a current once as a child when she visited the Isles with her family. If it weren’t for that one wizard she likely wouldn’t have been here today – the idea just made her shudder. Raising her hand and waaaaiting to be called on Islay finally spoke up.
”All water has different living matter in it – not the creatures such as grindylow or fish, but microorganisms such as bacteria and microbes in it…some of which can cause infections in the central nervous system of homosapiens” she paused for a moment, "or so I’ve been told by my aunt” she shrugged and gave a small nod of her head as if punctuating her sentence with a physical period.

You know what was tough? Trying to pay attention in class when said class was not only outside on an exceptionally nice day, but also at the lake. And as such, Morgan's attention was on pretty much everything but class. Especially when everyone else answered all the things he knew about the dangers of water - 1. drowning, and 2. certain dangerous creatures.
There were more answers from his classmates, but zoned out Morgan glanced over at Kale next to him, who looked really out of sorts. He wasn't still mad at him, was he? He nudged him with his elbow and whispered, "What's going on with you?" He was super discreet, whispering and all, trying not to get them in trouble with his dad.
And then Bernie's answer caught his attention. "You think he'd do that?" he blurted out after her. He'd never seen the squid himself, but would he really drown you on purpose? OH! That reminded him... and he raised his hand.
"I'm pretty sure there's a kind of water plant, it sort of looks like seaweed, but it can wrap one of its leafy vine tendrils around your leg and pull you under!" And that would be a water hazard for sure, because it could drown you too, just like the squid apparently would!

Even if the class was early in the morning, at least it was outside by the lake. So Ivy was actually kind of enjoying herself, despite feeling a bit tired. The lake was SO PRETTY in the daylight. It made her want to take a ton of photos of it, and she DID have the camera her dad gave her in her bag, but she figured taking pictures in the middle of class was frowned upon. Especially during the Headmaster's class. She wanted to make a good impression!
So she resisted the urge. Barely.
Oh, and she was definitely paying attention, yes. She jotted down a few notes from some of her classmates' answers, and she would've offered an answer of her own, but any that she would've said had already been said by someone else. And she didn't see the point in repeating a bunch of things, y'know?
So she was quiet for now, trying to balance her attention between focusing on everyone's answers and the pretty scenery.

After last term - WHERE GODRIC GRYFFINDOR HAD TRIED TO DECAPITATE HIM, IN CASE ANYONE HAD FORGOTTEN - Eiji had decided to make the shift in his class schedule a permanent one and was picking up Defense Against the Dark Arts properly. Though he was mostly here for the theoretical applications of things, which was why he and the headmaster tended to clash considering his unnecessarily hands on approach to...everything. Though he DID have to admit the additional training was helping his reflexes...and Uncle Ryu had encouraged him to be less of a stick in the mud about it all.
The headmaster also being a bit of a family friend was...a bit of a nuisance. Though at least the headmaster was more chill about it unlike OTHER professors he could mention.
When class began, and Eiji finding a spot rather haphazardly and not really looking around to see who was nearby, Eiji could not help but have his lips curl into a but of a salty smirk.
Dangers? Around water? Oh, this seventh year had some FIRST hand experience with that and he was in enough of a mood to not be able to resist offering up his own sort of response in snarky throw back. It was a coping mechanism to cope with...his own fear of water...and drowning. And certain people could do without calling him out on the defensive snark, okay?
"It's not always the water itself you have to be concerned with," he offered casually while NOT glancing around to see if a certain Ravenclaw was present to hear his offering. "People around you while around the water can be just as much cause for danger in their own panic. Especially if they happen to be wielding oars."

Fiona had been listening to the answers of her fellow students and was admittedly struggling with finding an answer of her own. After a few tentative moments, she slowly raised her hand and replied. "There are such things as rips or rip currents in the ocean that can drag swimmers away from the shoreline thus increasing the risk of them drowning."

Heath was on edge! Not only was he worried about whatever dangerous monsters he might encounter, but he was scared that when the time came, he'd either freeze or do the wrong thing. Then he'd look dumb in front of everyone and disappoint the headmaster! Those fears combined made DADA the trifecta of scariness, but regardless of how he felt, he was here on time and ready to learn… or try to, anyway.
Eager not to make a mistake straight out of the gate, Heath listened intently to the headmaster's every word, even the opening spiel about not complaining. There was no need to worry about that! Frankly, Heath didn't find essays or reading assignments boring at all, and even if that were the case, he wasn't dumb enough to voice that opinion! So anyway, water dangers…
Heath's first thoughts turned to grindylows, but that was, like, the first thing said. What a shock! Then he thought of other creatures like merpeople, sharks, jellyfish, and parasites, but all of those things had been said too. He was beginning to get really frustrated! Every time he came up with something to say, somebody else said it first! He was officially out of ideas, so now what? If he repeated answers, he'd look stupid, but if he didn't say anything, he'd look like he wasn't paying attention!
Heath stared out at the lake, hoping the water would jog his memory. Eventually, he remembered a story his uncle told about some toxic algal bloom he'd encountered at work. He quickly raised his hand and said, "Water is home to some types of algae that are toxic to wildlife and humans."

Why was Carsyn really just paying attention to how sadistic some of her classmates were?? The sixth year made a mental note to not get on the bad side of certain people .... aka Nemesis who started talking about inferi dragging you under in this very lake??? And then there was Cecelia mentioning to the Headmaster about throwing sleeping students in to keep them awake?!
Also, all the mentions of drowning had the Gryffindor wondering if her peers couldn't swim? Perhaps Hogwarts needed to mandate swimming lessons, since that was a mundane life skill.
What were other dangers present in bodies of water? Grindelows and merpeople were mentioned. Hurricanes. Staring out at the body of the water for inspiration, she raised her hand finally, "There's jelly fish, particularly present in oceans and they tend to blend in making them impossible to see. They don't appear dangerous, but if you get stung... it's quite painful, which I think I read something about peeing on a jellyfish sting to stop the pain."

A lot of answers were going around to the Headmaster’s question. But was Minjae paying attention? Not really. He had been paying attention at first but soon he simply...zoned out and watched the water. He wondered what they were going to do. The man had said that he needed the energy so it was bound to be something fun right? At least more fun than answering theoretical questions. Still, he was in his fifth year now and had his OWLs exams coming up at the end of the year. If he did not start paying attention in classes now he was doomed to fail. So taking his eyes off of the rippling water he waited for the next question because most the answers had already been given.

They don't have to be magical either. Sharks, alligators and the like are equally capable hunters."
Even if the former wasn't necessarily looking to eat people. Misunderstood thing, it was.

Claudine thought before raising her hand. “One can stumble upon Merpeople’s dwelling and they might not take too well to sudden intruders.’’
With the earlier mention of grindylows, he knew it was only a matter of time before someone else mentioned their habitat buddies. "Yes, good. Merpeople do tend to stick to their colonies but they aren't fond of others stumbling in or threatening their borders too closely."
He didn't need to explain what happened when people did, did he? They were all clear on that?

She was not skittish,okay? He had just SNUCK UP on her practically. "Oh...yes, I think I am. This seems a whole lot more exciting than homeschool right now....no practical lessons there," she said gently. She was only assuming this was going to be practical. They were outside! She glanced in the boy's direction, very apologetic she didn't remember his name. He was the Ravenclaw prefect, too. She would learn eventually!
But there was Noah, too, and she nodded at the water. "I reckon there's a reason we're by the lake," she whispered in reply.
AND CLASS WAS STARTING. Headmaster Trent had told her to loosen up so she did, letting her hands hang at her sides. Loooosely. His question sparked her to think logically about water. Water wasn't scary to only wizards...it was scary to muggles, too. "Well, especially for people who can't swim, just stepping into the water can be a risk of drowning. Well - not literally stepping in - but you know what I mean." Maybe her answer wasn't the most profound, but she didn't know how to swim SUPER WELL. She was about to tack on something a bit more intelligent, but other people spoke up, so she bit her tongue and listened.
Being intelligent isn't all about showing off in class...it's performing well on examinations and making logical decisions under pressure. She reminded herself.
Was...was...he going to have to worry about her, too? She was the second student in the space of 5 minutes to mention drowning, specifically getting into the water without knowing how to swim.
"Yes.....and I hope you aren't one of them that...can't...swim, yeah?" Because...um....the lake.
Some would end up in there.

He was just gonna leave that where it was. If she said she was fine...he was gonna leave her and her teenage hormones to continue being fine and he would just stand over here and nod along.
Back to the topic at hand. "Huh. I suppose you're right about that." When he'd mentioned water, he hadn't been thinking in the form of precipitation but McCarthy had a point there. "Natural disasters tend to be destructive, on principle."

Ewan had to admit, he was a little relieved that the Headmaster seemed to have let his detention and bhaviour go from last year. He still believed he’d been in the right last year but he did sort of regret how he’d handled his behaviour. Not what he wanted on his permanent record at all.
Focusing on the lesson for today, he let out a small smile as the headmaster mentioned a practical lesson. Having aced his NEWT in DADA, this was always something he’d found came natural to him. Sure, he wasn’t exactly a Mad Eye Moody or a Harry Potter but he enjoyed this subject and that alone made him go the extra mile to improve.
What were the dangers of water? ”Well, as a few have said already, there are several different types of creatures to be wary of in the lake. Grindylow’s, Selkies and Merpeople to name but two. There’s also the giant squid her but it tends to be a little more friendly”. Having run amuck of a few Grindylow’s in his previous years at Hogwarts and seen how that had affected some of his friends, he respected the water and the creatures inside it enough not to go too deep into its midst’s. ” Also, one has to be weary of breathing under water in general. If you’re too deep and your charms fail or your time runs out with your gilyweed, you could end up drowning so if you’re going under, you need to be prepared” . He could be wrong but he had a feeling they might end up going down into the lake and if that was so, he was going to be prepared. He wouldn’t let one of his friends get snatched up by a Grindylow again.
Talk about packing in a ton of responses. This Ravenclaw did have a tendency to go off on small tangents, this one not as long as it could have been, somewhat repetitive given the answers prior to his own but the man supposed that once that Ravenclaw brain got going, there was little in the way of a filter.
"All those are correct, yes. Not knowing how to swim would increase the danger there, too. You'd be rendered in the same position as a muggle." And they didn't always fare well against the elements.

But then she remembered manners were a thing. And she had tried to sneak in without giving a proper greeting. Perhaps that? Worth a try anyways. "Good morning, Headmaster Trent." And if that worked, she'd have to make note of it for later.
But then class was starting, so K promptly clamped her mouth shut while it began and tried to focus her attention on the Headmaster's introduction. What were the concerns that came with bodies of water? K raised her hand up a little,waiting for others to finish their answers before she supplied hers. "Shark attacks."
Because he had said muggle concerns could be answered as well, right?
That wasn't so hard now was it?
The Headmaster inclined his head toward the Hufflepuff when she finally offered up a greeting. "Good morning." He returned, willing to put it behind him and get on with the lesson.
Which had turned into a talk on shark attacks. Lindsey had mentioned something about sharks, too, hadn't she? "Accidental as it often is, shark attacks are a very real danger when you enter some waters, yes."

Count that as the third student to mention drowning and he was now becoming somewhat concerned that they may need to move this lesson further away from the lake than he'd expected.
Was this the point when he became concerned...because...he was getting concerned.
"Drowning....yes......." Granted, there were a ton of other things that could kill them before they had the chance to drown but with how pessimistic these kiddos already were...maybe...he'd just...not....

Cecelia didn't think water was THAT terrifying, but she WAS aware of how much could go wrong when you were hanging out in or around it. The swimming thing she had DOWN, but water could be unpredictable and SO could the stuff that lived IN it. Also, just USING it could get you into LOADS of trouble. "Headmaster, the temperature of the water can be dangerous. Like, if it's really cold and you're in it for a long time, your body loses heat and you get super sick. It could even kill you." She eyed the lake and then him and then nodded her head solemnly.
Heh. Of course he could take the credit. Wouldn't want Precious Bean #3 becoming the bad guy. He, on the other hand, was perfectly comfortable being the bad guy if it meant the students learned. It would truly be no skin off his back.
"A fair point, Summers. Hypothermia can take you out just the same as any creature that might be lurking in the water." Warming charms helped with that, to be sure, but not everyone had the luxury and even if they did, sometimes that was the easiest way to walk into a statute breech.

"Absolutely. Benign as their name may sound, jellyfish can be a force to be reckoned with and they do happen to inhabit bodies of water. Some are highly venomous. Not the sort you want wrapping around your legs." As they tended to do, even if only on accident and a shift of the current.
He wasn't much of a creature expert but he'd heard of box jellies on a vacaction down under. It had been all the motivation he'd needed to stay on the sand and build little castles with Mavis. Good trip.

Bigger things liked to live in bodies of water that were deep enough to support their frame. Bigger things tended to like eating littler things and as it so happened, people were the littler things when it came to these predators.

If you're out in open water or in a body of water that you're unused to it can catch you completely off-guard and have serious consequences." Especially if you didn't know how to swim or where little kids were involved.
Drop offs were another passive sort of way the water could end up offing you, and another his own mind hadn't gone to when he'd first posed the question.
"That's a good point, yes. If you don't know where you're going or how far the bed sprawls, you could find yourself descending a sudden drop off and that alone is panic inducing." Panic was one of the fastest ways to get yourself drowned.
Luckily, they didn't have that worry here today.

It only served to highlight the fact that the first few lessons of the term were extra insulting in their simplicity, and Nem huffed a sigh and glanced out at the water, twisting the ring on his thumb exactly three times before raising a hand.
"People have been known to hide armies of Inferi in large bodies of water - including this large body of water." Nice and loud for the people in the back. "So who's to say that when you go for a dip in a lake or river or anywhere, really, that you're not gonna get a friendly visit from a bunch of reanimated corpses? You might think that's a fish tickling your foot, but could be there's something trying to grab you and drag you under." Flashing a pleasant smile, Nem hooked his thumbs into his pockets and fell silent again.

Trent's jaw fell slack at that response. Upstead wasn't wrong but given the penchant of some students to...oh....panic, he really wished this answer could've been saved for another day when they were back inside the castle. The pleasant smile at the end, it was the period at the end of a rather poignant sentence.
"Right." He cleared his throat, deciding the fact none had taken off running yet meant they were getting better at this. "Yes, inferi sometimes can be hidden there. Yes." Just. Yes?

A nice swim in the lake was a completely different situation than drowning or a tsunami or something.

This was starting to become an impressive list of all the ways they could die by water. Not his original intention and he was still holding out for someone to hit the nail on the head but for now, these students were thinking outside of the box he'd set before them and placed flashing lights around.

The answer, once again, had him wanting to ask if she was alright. Bad things happen when you eat rubbish. "...yes." He conceded carefully. Not an answer he was looking for but it wasn't wrong. Not up his alley was probably the best descriptor.

"Getting trapped in or under water can definitely become a frightening experience. I can only imagine the first few moments, knowing you're stuck but not what has you stuck." The panic. Some of the students insisted on panic no matter how many lessons they had with him. They were the least likely to make it out of situations like that unless they improved.

He wasn't so sure he wanted to experience that. If they were allowed to safely dissect it, however... THAT would be GREAT!
"Uuugh... mosquitoes and other bugs that may be carrying diseases lay their eggs in still water." he said as he lowered his hand, then raised it again as if he thought of something. "Are there corpses that drag you in still there?" So that he'd know if it was safe to come closer.
Theeeeere was the look he expected the moment Upstead mentioned inferi in the lake. It was only a matter of who and in this case, it was this one.
Bugs and diseases aside, the man felt the need to set the record straight. "There are no inferi left in the great lake. It was scoured and cleaned. You've got nothing to worry about."
...In the context of inferi. Still plenty of other things that could kill him down there but there was no need to bring that up.

Of course drowning had to be mentioned at least ten times. Was anyone even listening? Nina was. For the record. A little too well because these answers were incredibly unnerving. She liked Nemesis’ and Michael's the least. Disease? Armies of inferi? She made sure to look back at their Headmaster after each of these remarks from her classmate. Was she looking for some sort of assurance that they would not be exposing themselves to such things today? Absolutely.
Never in her two (and a half) years at Hogwarts did she enter the lake and after hearing all of this, she most definitely never would. Thanks. She hated it. When it came to Nina, she politely raised her hand and waited her turn. ”In cases where the water isn’t as clear, there’s always the risk that you will cut yourself on coral or rocks, which could result in infection. Some species of coral contain venom too.” Double dangerous. Questions like this were very unnerving. She trusted that Headmaster Trent wouldn't... let anything horrible happen during his class... But she still worried. Like, a lot.
And each time she looked to him, the Headmaster tried his best to give her a reassuring look. There was nothing to worry about. They would walk away from this lake safe and sound at the end of all this--so long as they did what they were told.
Castillo was not one of the students he worried about where that was concerned.
"Infection after a nasty scrape with coral sounds like a horrible way to go." No, really. Of all the ways to go, that had to be one of the least eventful and possibly one of the more unfortunate for its simplicity. One might never see it coming.

Water currents were yet another reason Malachi didn't try going out too far when he went to the beach and honestly, who went there to swim anyway? There were so many things that could get you and the pay off was disproportionate.

Water, huh? Well water could have many different dangers. There were things like Tsunami's that could take out entire towns, or dangerous creatures that could lurk in the water and bite off an arm when you weren't paying attention. But he was sure the professor wasn't looking for anything that drastic. No he was probably looking for something along the lines of eroding away rocks or flipping boats.
Dylan raised his hand and waited to be called on before answering. "Those who tend to live on or near the water have to be sure to have their house raised so as not to flood any part of it. I've seen some houses on stilts even!" His face flushed red again. That wasn't very loud, and he was lucky to be sitting closer to the professor otherwise he probably wouldn't have heard him. Dylan was not a very loud person, and he really didn't like answering questions in front of this many people, but after the incident upon walking in, especially since he looked so disheveled, he wanted to be sure Professor Trent knew he was paying attention.
"Right you are. It's why in some cases, people are advised against building there in the first place. It's a poor investment if every time it rains you need to do more fixer uppers." Living by the sea sounded lovely and maybe he would one day, but for now he was content with the location of his home.
Even with his enthusiasm rising, the boy remained soft spoken. Whether this would turn out to be a good thing was yet to be seen, but for now...after having taught some loud students in the previous year, he'd take it.

"It's not always the water itself you have to be concerned with," he offered casually while NOT glancing around to see if a certain Ravenclaw was present to hear his offering. "People around you while around the water can be just as much cause for danger in their own panic. Especially if they happen to be wielding oars."
"Oddly specific...." And he hadn't missed the way the boy's gaze had briefly wandered but he was staying out of that one. Why the students had oars they were wielding in water was something for someone else to worry about.
"But yes, especially in the middle of panic, others can get you sooner than the water has a chance to. That's why it's so important to remain focused and not panic." Were they all finally understanding the need to remain level headed?

Heath stared out at the lake, hoping the water would jog his memory. Eventually, he remembered a story his uncle told about some toxic algal bloom he'd encountered at work. He quickly raised his hand and said, "Water is home to some types of algae that are toxic to wildlife and humans."
"That it is." He agreed. Not something they had to worry about in the lake today but something for them to keep in mind in general. There were too many people who saw bodies of water and decided to jump in with little information. It was playing fast and loose. Nothing that he thought he'd have to drive that home. By now, the man was beginning to think the students were well aware of the dangers of random bodies of water.

This is so they can lure unsuspecting travellers onto their backs before dragging them down into the water where they feast on them. What kind of nut hops on the back of a random horse that appears out by water is beyond me, but they haven't gone extinct so there must be plenty." There was a lesson to be learned there. Malachi wasn't sure how many of his students would wind up by a body of water and thoughtlessly hop onto the first horse that appeared but he had a few in mind.
"Some of you may already know of one famous kelpie, the famed Loch Ness Monster. To get the best of one, you'll need the placement charm and a bridle. Get that on one and you should be fine." To get the basics out of the way.
"That said, I'd like to hear from you. Say you ran into a kelpie, what's your strategy? Give me your gut reactions. I wanna hear battle plans." Give him faith you would survive. Go.

"Yes Headmaster, I do know how to swim." Blake answered the question, but now he had realized that they would in fact be getting into the water, he should have packed his swim trunks.
A kelpie??? What a way to start the year .. a water demon, wasn't this defense against the dark arts? Not care of magical creatures ... bu does a demon count as a creature??? Blake wasn't sure, none the less, he pondered what he would actually do if he encountered one. "I mean, do you have to get on it's back? I'm not sure I would be tempted to hop on the back of a random horse at the river side." Blake added, he was sure he would have more sense then that. "I'm more of stealth try your best to not be noticed and get the heck out of there kind of guy ....." Okay that was not not very confident at all, but it was the truth.

Oh. Kelpies. What kind of nut hops on the back of a random horse that appears out by water is beyond me, but they haven't gone extinct so there must be plenty. Was this one of those rhetorical questions, because considering last year where two of her younger housemates got brainwashed by their house founder to destroy the dueling arena, something Carsyn regrettably couldn't stop as she'd gotten sidetracked with prefect things on the way, but anyway ... obviously the nut would be a Gryffindor. But not a question to answer, which she was thankful she hadn't blurted anything out.
What was her strategy if she ran into a kelpie.... um, first of all, why was she running in the water?? Kelpies were water demons, yes? So when they took the appearance of a horse, that didn't mean they behaved as horses, right? They still remained in the water? Was all that irrelevant as to battle plans? Fight or flight would likely kick in and the younger slytherin boy was going for the flight. Also, hadn't the Headmaster just told them not to hop on their backs ??
Chewing her lip thoughtfully, she raised her hand, "Are we trying to capture the kelpie or just get away? If trying to just get away, then ignoring and going the opposite direction would be best. Perhaps a shield charm or impediament charm to slow it down." So many questions about the situation.

Maybe contain it in a large bubble of water until it could be dealt with in a safer way?. Until he knew more about the situation, that was what he was going with.
Ermm...he got a sheepish grin from Aboli in reply because she wasn't a GREAT swimmer. And now, she was alarmed about it. Like, why had no one ever taught her to swim? They had a POOL at their house...but she had simply always floated...and it wasn't deep...it was SHALLOW.
Okay no, she could totally swim...but she had never been to like...a beach or...proper REAL water....so...
Cue panic mode.

Claudine was in awe of all the various answers given though her face betrayed nothing. This lesson would certainly pop up in her brain the next time she was ready to go swimming. Including the kelpie issue… she inwardly shuddered. Those creatures… she was never keen on ever encountering one though that seemed as though it would change this morning.
The girl’s hand went up and she waited to be called on. When she was, the reply she had come up with was given. “Since they eat humans, I would transfigure myself into something that was uninterested to the kelpies.’’ The biggest flaw in the plan was her actually being able to successfully have that type of transfiguration done. But that was her answer: human transfiguration.

Yes. His answer WAS oddly specific because it came from an oddly specific life experience. Needless to say, Eiji felt rather tickled by his own sense of humor and felt considerably in a better mood as class progressed on to the topic of kelpies. Not something he had ever had any personal experience with - the most action he had encountered had been the kappa influx in Lake Kawaguchi two summers prior while he was continuing his studies at Himitsumahou.
So...would his gut reaction be? Self preservation, all the way. He'd turn heel and get the heck away from the water. Random horse suddenly coming up and potentially nuzzling him for attention and affection? No thanks. Though he could imagine that literally any creature loving classmate of his would jump at the opportunity to ride a wild horse that offered itself to them so willingly. His own little sister came to mind, actually.
So, ironically, he found himself agreeing with the younger Slytherin: just leave.

Honestly honestly Flynn didn't know what Kale was always on about when it came to his dad being a professor: The headmaster was a cool dude, and his classes were cool, and Flynn felt that Kale could do a LOT worse when it came to all that really. So he was paying preeeeetty close attention for this lesson, mostly. He'd also spent a bit of time wistfully looking out at the lake, thinking about the beach visit during the summer, and also a biiiiit of time peeking at one particular badge wearer. Just a bit. Not as much as last term, but still with the peeking.
He sorta zoned back in enough to pick up the thread of the conversation and the question being asked, so he thought about it and put his own hand up.
"Run away. I'm fast. But professor, I have a question. Why ARE there still kelpies? Like, they're water demons, right? Not proper creatures? How do they spawn? Also why doesn't the ministry just go kill them all off? If they're not proper creatures it wouldn't be cruel, would it?" Okay maybe more than one question, but Kale's dad was cool, it would be fine, right?

Oh! OH! Darn it Mark! You should have thought of the Kelpie. What with there being a supposed one lurking in the River and Lake right next to his home. He and his father both believe there is one there but haven't yet encountered it. Just a bunch of oddly tough stray garden gnomes on the river bank trying to get back to gardens they've been chucked out of. Also Hinkypunks but those you'd have to wander WAY off the river and into the swamps an hour off to encounter them....not that he knew that they were there and had to run from two of them over summer or anything. Nothing like that at all.
"If I actually saw a Kelpie instinct would tell me to get the hell away from there." He wanted to ask something else. "What exactly does the Kelpie do that would attract anyone to come near them? If everyone was as vigilant as you are, they would all starve to death. It doesn't say that they attack unsuspecting people just that they're lured in by them, then are killed."

Or more specifically right now, how to get away from one. Welp, his first thought was 'why would he ever get close enough to one to need to get away?!' but this likely wasn't the response the Headmaster would want. Stuff could happen in mysterious ways though so it wasn't completely like this situation could never ever occur.
So on the off chance that he did find himself needing to get away from a kelpie, what would he do? Run. Or uhhh... swim away? Either one worked unless he ended up getting eaten. Using a charm or something was another likely option but there was a drawback on this option too. His complete lack of any spells that would be helpful. Needless to say he would end up eaten. Unless... he wasn't alone?
"I would keep far faaaar away from it to begin with," Lukas replied, his hand in the air. "If I did find myself to close to one though I'm not sure if running or attempting to swim away would be useful." Chances were it would only make him more of a target. "Unfortunately I don't know many spells that would be very effective yet but if I did... trapping it somehow might work." How he would do that he wasn't entirely sure of yet either.

Bridle ...are we going to fight Kelpies now?" enough with the theoretical questions!

WHO WAS TO SAY or confirm or not confirm this? Only Bartholomew Henry could answer for his actions, and this Gryffindor, for one, was ready to ask the hard-hitting questions no one else was brave enough to ask. She also nodded to Nem for the information regarding all the inferi that were DEFINITELY hiding in this demon-filled lake. Bernie was trying really very hard to imagine herself encountering a kelpie now, something like Nessie, which she had never seen herself, but cuter. Did baby kelpies exist? Did they have seaweed for hair? Were they friends with mermaids--- er, merpeople? Her imagination may have enabled her to miss part of the Headmaster's lecture here. Had he said something about nuts? "If I were already out on the lake, and close enough to manage it, I probably WOULD hop right on the back of a random horse that appears out of the water and THEN try to bridle it up close and personal...." she spoke her thoughts aloud.

And the kelpie would love her for domesticating it and it would take her on a rainbow ride around the lake, up and down, but never too long underwater, because a drowning by Barty Henry and his army of inferi was still a very real possibility.

Well, Avalon knew for certain that the first thing she would do if she every saw a kelpie would not involve placing a bridle over its head and hopping on its back. That just sounded plain mad. Those things were absolutely enormous. And what if the kelpie showed up in a form other than a horse? She didn't think it would be very wise to try and put a bridle over the head of a human-looking water demon. "If the kelpie wasn't actively pursuing me, I would try to escape quietly and without it noticing," Avalon said after putting her hand up. She felt like stealth would be the key. There would be no use in trying to tame it, since her magical skills were definitely not up to par to that of a water demon. "If I was up against it, my first instinct would be to stun it. But I have a feeling that might not work, or it could make the kelpie even more angry. So I think I would go with a shield charm and just try to get out of there as fast as I could." She figured she had a better chance protecting herself than successfully charming a frenzied kelpie.

And Nina very much planned on doing exactly what they were told. Things had a tendency to go south otherwise. Yes, she very vividly remembered the mist. Those students had no one to blame but themselves. Their Headmaster had made himself perfectly clear (he usually did). It was also why she had no sympathy for the likes of Grantham and Blaze who did stupid things on the regular and were faced with the appropriate consequences as a result of defying Headmaster Trent. Speaking of which, could he do something about her right now? Because her answers were giving Nina a headache.
She only entertained these thoughts a few moments longer as her attention quickly went back to the other (more respectable) answers that were being shared. Though nothing shared was any new information, there was always a possibility that she would learn something valuable from her peers and with NEWTs soon approaching, Nina wanted to be as prepared as possible. The least unnerving answer was that one that Eiji Rasting offered. If Nina weren’t so concerned with what Headmaster Trent thought of her she may have even snorted. As it was, however, she just smiled the TINIEST amount. She liked his snark only when it was justified. And this bit was. Trinnetta Gladin had almost gotten them KILLED, after all.
As for their kelpie strategy, Nina found herself agreeing with those that said they would run. ”I would have done my research ahead of time. If I know I’ll be near a body of water, I’d like to know what sorts of creatures I could run into. Especially those that are dangerous.” And Kelpies were classified as a level XXXX so. Hello, yes, Nina liked having control over situations. Surprises were not welcome. ”If I were to run into one unexpectedly though,” which wouldn’t happen because she would be prepared! And figuring that their headmaster was not looking for answers involving the placement charm, as he had just mentioned it himself (Nemesis Upstead made her want to roll her eyes). ”I’d likely run. After quickly placing a disillusionment charm on myself.” She was fast, but unlike Whitlock, Nina would take extra precautions. No risk was worth her life.
Not that any of this would really happen in the moment. She liked to think she would be quick on her feet in dangerous circumstances. Unfortunately, however, she was rather useless. Case and point being the boathouse circa fourth year. Actually, in all likelihood? Nina's gut instinct would be the scream at the top of her lungs and hope to be rescued by a prince charming. Or her boyfriend. Those were synonymous.

Ohh, so the lesson was not going to be about trash in the water.
Well, thank Merlin for that! Flora wouldn't have known the first thing about cleaning up trash in a lake as big as the one they were in front of. Although, now that she had thought about it just a little bit, she was in a Defense Against the Dark Arts class. What kind of trash would she need to defend herself against!?
Probably just the smelly kind.
What the lesson was about, though, were Kelpies, and if it hadn't been for the fact that the Headmaster Professor had already woken her up, she definitely would've been awake then. Her ears were perking up at just the idea of seeing a Kelpie. But hearing the man mention a bridle, a bridle which allowed you to steer and kind of ride an animal, had her awake in a whole bunch of different ways. Were they going to RIDE a Kelpie? Were they going to RIDE a Kelpie and be dragged down to the bottom of the lake and have to FIGHT off the Kelpie for SURVIVAL!? SHE SURE HOPED SO!
"I WOULD PUNCH IT IN THE SNOUT!" Her Aunt would be proud.
By the way, Headmaster Professor, she was fine.
