Default Muggle Studies: Lesson 1: The Internet

Despite the rain earlier that month, the weather for that particular day was significantly the opposite. That was, the air was warm and it was a beautiful morning outside. Unfortunately, the class could not be held outdoors as this particular lesson called for electronics to be used. More directly, they would be using the computers. Today’s setting was quite different from regular lessons. For one thing, a classroom was not being used but the Entertainment Room was. For another, the usual equipment that adorned the Room all seemed to have vanished (but were actually stashed safely and carefully at the back) and every computer that was available had been set up into rows and columns- much like a Muggle computer lab. There were long, rectangular tables that stationed five computers apiece and were accompanied by long benches. The furniture faced the front of the Room where Professor Kaysha’s trusted whiteboard now stood.

Where is your professor?

She’s at the desk temporarily brought in as she tries to focus on putting together future lesson plans. Given the recent occurrences at the School, Kay sometimes found this a challenge. Never the less, she looked up and greeted each arrival.

HELPFUL LINKS:
*Question 1
*Mini Activity: Day 1

*Mini Activity: Day 3
*Main Activity: Day 1

OOC: WELCOMEEE to our first OOC lesson; this would not be the first IC one Your charries’ will notice that the computers are off currently. They should not put them on... or they can and face the consequences We’ll get started in about 27- 28 hours.

Everything wasn’t alright.

It had been a terrible start to the term and he was in a constant state of blaaaah. He wasn’t about to say that to the Professor though, nor did he answer her question about computers because everyone else had beat him to it.

He was much happier daydreaming anyway.

So that’s exactly what he did.

Elbow on the desk, chin resting in his palm, the Slytherin simply stared off into space.

Lucas was a little surprised when Stasya came and sat down next to him. Not because he didn't expect anyone to sit next to him but mostly because he didn't really think he was ~cool~ enough to be sitting next to a fifth year. And what was more was that she was SMILING at him. He smiled back at her, not really knowing what to say apart from mentioning the computers and asking her if she was excited about the lesson too.

It was probably a good thing that Stella ended up sitting next to him as well, mostly because it made him feel a little bit more comfortable. But then she started asking questions, questions about Divination, and that...... changed. The smile was gone and he tried hard not to fidget where he sat. "Uh......" She was being nice, yeah, and it was nice but..... the memory? Yeah, no.

"I'm okay. Yeah, I'm okay. At least I'll maybe have muscles from those pushups now, eh?" ..... That was bad. That was a very bad attempt at humour. Don't do that again, Lulu. "Are you okay?"

It seemed like it was his lucky day because now, not only was Stasya sitting near them but so was an older Slytherin boy (Zachary) and the Hufflepuff Prefect (Derf)?! Woah. W O A H. Although, all of this was short-lived when Stella started talking about Divination to him as well and Lucas..... just held his breath. She was being nice, she was, but what if this only upset him?

He couldn't really think on this for very much longer because the Professor had shut the door, causing him to switch his attention from those sitting around him to the Professor. Did he like computers? Well, yeah! He wasn't an expert, really, but he knew some things about computers. They taught about them, they did. So it wasn't completely new to him, something that made him feel a little bit more comfortable.

Lucas sat there, listening and writing down anything he could in his little notebook. But something he didn't understand was what the Professor said about hardware and software and programmes. Frowning slightly, he underlined that little sentence once.... twice.... three times. Please explain what a hardware and software is and why one was hard and the other was soft. Please.

As for the answer to the question, well, most people had said it hadn't they? And apart from repeating the answer, he didn't really have anything to offer so he just stayed quiet. There was no point in saying the same thing again. Though, he did offer an encouraging smile to Stella and her rambling.

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

Dorian nodded his head at Rylee. He hadn't been this excited in a lesson in some time. The Ravenclaw then looked at the person that Rylee was waving at and he picked up his pen and began to spin it around. How Rylee had chosen him to be one of her friends was still beyond him...

As the class began, Dorian stopped spinning his pen and placed it neatly on the righ side of his notebook in case he needed to make notes. He looked at the Professor to give his full attention and his feet was tapping on the floor in excitment as he waited for the magic words 'play video games' .....But....it did not come. For a second, he sighed dissapointedly but not too loud because he did not want to come over as rude.

Since some of the students had already provided the answers, Dorian didn't think of answering himself. What was the point anyway? So for now, he stayed silent.

The thing that let people talk to other people around the world. Nettie frowned. Was she talking about instant messaging programs? She vaguely recalled reading about that. No, she replayed the question in her mind a few more times and realized she was asking for something a lot more general.

She raised her hand. "The internet," she told her simply. There was no need to elaborate on that, they all knew what the internet was...right?

Stella thought for a second, how was she? Besides being absolutely terrified of the Headmaster and Divinations Professor she was fine. Giggling at Lucas remark she smiled at him. "I'm glad you're ok, I..I'm ok." she said shrugging. Now class was beginning she was being quiet.

Although at her rambling she lokked over at Lucas and all them blushing. She tended to ramble alot, she just hope she didn't get in trouble for it. Remaining quiet untl the next question she paid attention Professor Stewart.

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

Jessa missed the sad look the professor wore but it likely wouldn’t have done much to sway her. After sitting, she kept her gaze out the window, nearly missing the wave from Chloe but thankfully catching the movement out of the corner of her eyes and returning it.

It was strange how on edge she felt ever since that Divination lesson. Of course she knew that her other professors weren’t so....strict but it didn’t resolve the feeling. There were still small pools of anxiety steadily surfacing everytine she went into a classroom. Somewhere in the back of her mind, she was expecting the worse.

”Hey.” She greeted Mark when he took the spot next to her. He hadn’t seemed to thrilled with the hat’s decision but she didn’t know how she’d go about fixing something like that.

As the lesson began, she sat and listened to many of her classmates repeat more or less the same answer. Not at all in the mood to be a scratched record, Jessa simply kept her gaze on the window and waited for them to be ready to move on.

Yes. They were working on computers in this lesson. Awesome. She was fairly familiar with these things. She almost had to sit on her hands to keep from playing with the computer.

Also good job stewart, the professor was growing on her… Somewhat. Being her head of house she had to at least be okay with her. Or she guessed anyway.

Juni might’ve been daydreaming in the middle of the lesson already to realize that professor Stewart had even addressed the class with a question. The sixth year just sat there, staring into the computer screen. Maybe she know the answer to the question maybe she didn't. The world may never know.

Chloe had a Muggle great-grandmother and a Muggleborn grandma, and she still hadn't been able to pull the answer to that question out of the air as amazingly fast as her classmates. Or maybe ever. The Internet, or World Wide Web, was a way for people to connect with each other? How did that work?

Probably they were going to learn about that, right?

Skyler blinked yeah, she had no idea about what she was even talking about. She hadn't had the first clue about a computer much less what she was talking about. Skyler remained silent, a bit afraid to answer anyway. What and have her answer be wrong because she obviously knows what the question is even though she's a pureblood? She let out a small sigh rolling her eyes in annoyance. She then tensed afraid that she would be called out on about her sighing as the side effects of her inner thoughts leaked out into the world. The look of fear was evident on her face.

I'm fine, I promise I won't fall asleep in class." Maybe he'll ask Beth to poke him in extreme cases.

Speaking of Beth, he jumped in his seat when he felt fingers through his hair. He waved back to Stella as he'd caught her eye and, before he even registered what Beth was saying, she was seated next to him and being very... Beth. "Of course, friend," he grinned, unsure why Beth put all that emphasis on friend, but he was going to play along.

Anyway. Computers.

Professor Stewart had already lost him when she mentioned... hard..ware... and... soft..ware? Were there solid pieces, and squishy ones... within the computer thingy? What in the world did they mean? Needless to say, he had no clue what network muggles used to gather information... he knew what phones were, but that was about it.

Notes. Had to take notes.

Even back then Abra had known how important it was to ACT and not appear as stunned and amazed by the machine as he had felt, though, looking back, he wasn't sure how successful he had been.

Hardware? Software? Programmes? Abra's tired brain struggled to make much sense out of these words and he tried to work out whether or not he had heard them before. Most likely, he hadn't.

When the question was asked, Abra wracked his brains for a moment or two, but the answer only came to him once he heard Bel say it. It was hard to decide whether he had already known and she had jogged his memory, or if his brain was trying to just go right ahead and steal the answer and pretend he knew it. Either way, that was what he thought it was, so Abra, not wanting to repeat it (especially if he WAS accidentally stealing the answer), kept quiet and waited to see if he was likely to be able to contribute anything of value in response to the next question.

He somehow doubted it.

Spotting someone waving in her general direction she turned her head just in time to see if was her fellow Gryffindor. Smiling she wiggled her fingers at the younger lioness, Stella.

Oh, the lesson was starting. Rylee shifted on the bench to listening to what was being said by Professor Stewart. The answer was easy. It was already being said several times over. The world wide web also known as the internet. There really wasn't any need for her to repeat it again. Swinging her feet back and forth beneath the bench she kept quiet waiting for the next question.

Hogwarts wouldn't have all the technologies muggles were used to using, so they didn't feel it was overly necessary for her to learn how to use them. Her school had done a lot of paper work, and used books for research. That was how she liked it, though. Books were one of her favourite things, and had never let her down. She didn't ever rely on a computer, so she didn't know a lot about them.

That was why the thirteen-year-old Ravenclaw was lost for information when it came to Professor Stewart's question. She didn't know what the network she was talking about was. Some of her classmates DID however, and Hanna took note of every suggestion.

There really wasn't any point in answering the question, seeing as everyone kept giving repeat answers at this point. Was all creativity dead or what?

Naturally, there were a few that remained quiet. They were the ones who were unsure of the answer, shy, felt the answer had been given already, tired, distracted or something else of the sort. At least they were planning on taking notes, yes? Possibly everyone with the exception of Max. “Mr. Carden?’’ Kaysha prodded after quietly drawing near to his station. “Please focus.’’

"The internet, professor?" Best way to check how the surf was! Which honestly was the main thing she ever used it for at home. Having a muggle parent and a muggleborn parent meant that of course it was the norm for her family, even if they weren't really the sort who spent lots of time using it, it was just there.

She raised her hand. "The internet," she told her simply. There was no need to elaborate on that, they all knew what the internet was...right?

“You all are correct!’’ Kay strode over to the white board, grabbed the marker then neatly proceeded to write “INTERNET’’ in the center and at the top of it. “Before I proceed, I’d just like to offer a definition for hardware and software. Hardware are the physical components that we can touch. For example...’’ She stepped to the closest computer. “The mouse.’’ This was pointed out to the class. “The monitor, the Central Processing Unit also called the CPU.’’ Point and point. “These are all hardware. In addition to those, others include the printer- used to print documents and images, scanner- used to send an image or document to the computer, among other devices that can be used with computer. Software are those programmes used to help the computer work- like programmes used to type or play games.’’ After explaining, Kay took her time to write out the definitions on the board.

“If no one has questions, we will move on.’’ After waiting a bit for any raised hands, she ploughed on. “The idea for the Internet first came about in the early 1900s but it wasn’t until the 1960s that the first prototype was made and used. Vinton Cerf and Bob Kahn were the two computer scientist that were credited with the invention of the protocols used to foster the Internet. From then on, more developments were made. Most notably... the World Wide Web.''

A pause was made here both for breath and to write some notes.

SPOILER!!: The World Wide Web!

“Addresses or URLs will usually begin with ‘www’, which stands for... you guessed it! World Wide Web!’’ She beamed as if this was the most amazing thing ever.

Well.

Yeah.

What else was there to say now? Lucas just nodded at Bel and Bettie. "What they said. The internet is the same thing as the world wide web, right? THat's why websites usually start W W W dot...right?" Even if he was getting ahead of himself, he couldn't help his curiosity. It was nice to feel SAFE in his curiosity unlike in Professor Blegh-er's class. Ugh. Just the thought of him made Lucas make a barf face, which hopefully no one thought was about them. WHOOPS.

Though soon class was beginning and, well, there really was only one answer to that question and it had already been offered up a few times...so the Hufflepuff tried to pick at his brain for something else to bring up. Something that maybe he had seen in one of those muggle TV crime dramas that his dad was so fond of. Cybercrime, which was kinda fun to say, had come up a bunch of times in varying degrees and was, you know, kinda a huge thing in the muggle world. Thankfully not something they at Hogwarts had to worry about so much.

.................or did they?

Holy hippogriffs...what if chizpurfles were to nibble away at a computer infested with one of those virus thingies that one could get from the internet? Would they get sick too? Would said virus then somehow mutate into something magical and spread once said chizpurfles moved on and infested the fur and feathers of other creatures?

.......he was zoning out quite a bit at the moment, thinking and going way way way off tangent with what the actual question had been and expected answer.

There was also some song he had heard about the internet being for....corn was it?

Right. What had the question been?

OH BUT WAIT!

"Isn't...er...aren't...the Internet and the...World Wide Web two different things?" At least he thought some technology savy muggle on one of the shows had rambled on about that once or twice. Derf, on the other hand, mostly thought about spiders when webs were brought up. "Well...not two DIFFERENT things but one is inside the other ... or something... and they aren't syn...syn...synonymous?"

“Mr. Ashburry-Hawthorne is quite correct. The two are different. If you will take notes now, kiddos. A question on this just might make an appearance in your exams.’’ Here, the woman winked. “To sum up as explained earlier: the Internet is a global network of networks while the web is the collective information accessible on the internet.’’

SPOILER!!: Uses of the Internet!

Were they components to build a single computer? ....But how could a ware be...soft? He wondered if the insides of the computer were made from soft-like materials....like sponges or cotton? That would be interesting to see.

Nathan let the others answered. There was no need for him to chip in when the answer he already thought of first has been given. It must be called the in-ter-net. But he was curious of its usage, so he raised his hand. "They used the internet to....do some research too, don't they?"

Kaysha bobbed her head. “They most certainly do. Unfortunately, researching the internet has replaced good, old fashioned library researches vastly in the Muggle world as practically everything had become digitalised.’’

* * * * * *

“Now for the fun part. Earlier, I showed you the CPU. If you note, there in the center, there is a small silver button. I’d like for you to push on it once. If done properly, the button will be highlighted in blue. A few seconds later, your monitor will begin to boot up. Allow the system to do so, please. If you need further clarification, please raise your hand and I’ll assist or you can ask a classmate who can help.’’

In the meanwhile, she would walk among the tables to see how things were going along.

OOC: HIII! Soooo, this is actually the start of the mini activity and is divided into three parts. Basically, they will each last twenty four hours but catchup will be accepted. Answering the first question after this post will NOT be counted though.

Each student is sitting in front of a computer that looks like this.

On a side note, in my rules state that I appreciate ‘out of the box thinking’. What this means is that your kiddos’ answers do not have to be right at all times. It can be something you or them might think silly, something that loosely connects to the topic, something not at all relating to the topic but in your charrie’s head, it does, etc. This works whether the question actually has a single correct answer or not. Don’t be afraid to let their imaginations go free. As long as it’s SS appropriate

Oooooh, computers and internet and stuff, how interesting. Natalie's mum had a computer, but she didn't let her use it because it was ANCIENT and she was afraid it would fall apart at any moment, but Natalie still snuck on every once in a while to play an asteroid game. She wondered if this computer had that game...

Anyway, it was time to turn it on. That seemed easy enough. Natalie reached forward and pressed the silver button, and, to her expectations, it turned blue and the screen started to light up. She pitied anyone who couldn't manage THAT.

Josie blinked, she wanted them to do something that simple? Just turn the computer on and wait for it to load? Was this supposed to be interesting or enjoyable learning? She'd zoned out slightly on her professor's explanation, this being nothing new. The internet was such a simple thing to her, she'd grown up with it, and honestly, this was starting to seem completely pointless...

But none the less the fourteen year old pressed the button and waited, still somewhat bored. Wooooooooo muggle studies meant getting online... maybe she'd at least get a chance to talk to her parents without having to owl them.

Muggle Studies... Benji never knew whether he was going to be excited or bored in this class. It was pretty hit or miss depending on what they were talking about on any given day. While he was a pureblood, his parents had wanted him to be familiar with Muggles and their ways, and especially how to keep the wizarding world a secret while interacting with Muggles. Before Hogwarts, Benji had attended a Muggle school and lived in a Muggle neighborhood. He'd learned to control his magic at a fairly young age because of that -- his parents had punished him severely the few times he had accidentally let his emotions get the better of him at school and used his magic without consciously trying to -- and he was already familiar with the concept of things like computers. He had even used one before in school! He felt kind of cool, actually, having some background knowledge. Some of the other students were looking at the computers like they were frightening beasts, but not Benji.

STILL. Now that he wasn't actively involved in the Muggle world every day anymore, there were obviously some things that were new to him. Like the ~internet~. He had a vague idea of what it was, but this would be his first time actually using it, and he couldn't help but be excited. Plus he liked Professor Stewart and was glad to be in a class where he didn't feel like he was holding his breath the whole time.

He obediently reached over and pressed the button once as instructed, watching it turn blue. His eyes widened a bit in anticipation. Sure, he'd turned on a computer before, but all he'd ever gotten to do was learn a really boring typing program. (But hey, he knew where his fingers were supposed to go on the keyboard!) The internet was shiny and new and exciting. Now to wait to learn how to actually, you know, get there. He fiddled with the mouse, watching it appear on the screen and then follow the movement of his hand. No clicking on anything, just biding time until they were told what to do next. Muggle technology!

Ah, so these were called hardwares of the computer, not softwares. Being the curious person that he was, Nathan picked up the keyboard and starts examining it. "Professor, why the keys in this key-board are not in alphabetical order?" he asked the professor. He pressed a couple of keys and found them to be very clicky. How fascinating...

There were even some keys that he had no clue what they were for.
SHIFT? CTRL? TAB? CAPSLOCK? ESC? Hmmmm...

Following the professor's instruction, he put his finger on the silver button and waited for it to come to life. He was quite surprised that it did! The screen pop out the loading image.

Urgh...too bright for his eyes. What is this....?

Meanwhile did anyone clock how ancient these rigs were? Bel eyed the computer up somewhat curiously. And honestly the fact that it was so old looking was throwing her a bit because it meant it wasn't immediately obvious to her how to turn it on until it got pointed out. Muggle Studies class sometimes, Bel felt, was more like Muggle History class. This computer even had cables and whatnot connecting everything instead of being fully wireless like the one that her family had at home. And the screen was so chunky! She got a bit of a kick out of that, honestly.

Bel pressed the button and was amused to see the light turn on and then..... it take its sweet time to boot up. And since it was taking a while, Bel went ahead and wrote down some fairly basic notes about the whole WWW and Internet discussion. Not because she didn't know but because note taking was something to do and it would be a reminder for her OWL revision down the track....

.... and that was done. Now she was interested to see what operating system this old piece of junk had! If it had one at all? Who knew with computers so old!

“.........huh?”

Ohhhh. Right. Focus. Sure, he could totally do that.

With a quick mumbled apology and grateful that he wasn’t ordered to pushups or something crazy for losing concentration, Max started scribbling down some notes. Well…. tried to anyway. There was a lot of information to take in. Hardware? Software? Why was one hard and the other soft???

He’d used computers before so turning the thing on wasn’t a problem. He pushed the button as instructed and waited for the monitor to spring to life.

How long was it even supposed to take? It was taking a while so it wasn’t long before he went straight back to daydreaming.

Whoa, whoa, slow down!

Rylee had opened up her notebook and taken out her pencil just in time to start taking down notes as Professor Stewart began talking. It was a good thing too as the women seemed to be giving them quite a bit of information this morning, some of which would be on their exams.

After all of that talking all they were supposed to do was push the silver button. Seriously. Rylee looked up at Stewart almost shook her head. This was really to easy. Just push a silly little button. Reaching out with her pointer finger she pushed the button on the screen watching as it lite up.

Now what? Please please could they do something really fun?!

On the bright side, his bad attempt at humour had gotten a laugh out of Stella. Though, he didn't really know if she was actually laughing because she thought he was funny or because....... she thought he was that bad at making jokes. But it was okay. And she said she was okay so he won't question it. Nope.

Even if she did stutter a bit.

Oh, hey, was that an explanation on hardware and software? Thank MERLIN.

Lucas turned back to his notebook and started making notes on this bit as well. Because this was important and he felt like he needed to know. He also wrote down the words Central Processing Unit (CPU) and underlined that multiple times as well. It sounded fancy. It sounded very technical and important and that's why it deserved to be highlighted in his book.

And also because he didn't really understand fully what it is but knew it had something to do with electrics and, uh, the computer? The running of the computer? Yeah, that's it.

There was a history portion that he tried to keep up with. The Professor wasn't speaking too quickly but he was finding it difficult to keep up his notes with her speaking. There were sure to be some gaps here and there but if he had most of the notes, that would be fine, right? Yeah.

It was only when they got to the part about the World Wide Web and how it's different to the Internet that he started to feel a little confused. Maybe it was just him but the two sounded very very similar and he was struggling to see what was so different about them in the first place. It..... sounded like something he'd have to say to himself over and over and over again so, he made a small box around that section of his notes.

And speaking of, his notes looked messy. VERY messy. This looked like a jumble of scribbles, underlines and boxes.

Uh.

Okay, so, guess it was time to move on.

A small silver button? Lucas looked around, half expecting this button to be on the monitor, but it wasn't. Locating it, he eagerly gave it a gentle push and smiled as it started to turn blue. Well, that was simple enough, wasn't it?

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

Woah...

Dorian accidentally knocked the pen with his elbow off of the table as he had opened his notebook in his haste to write notes. Even for someone who frequently used the computer for games and such, even he had to write down what the Professor was saying. Unable to find his pen, the Ravenclaw looked around and found it against the table leg of the student before him on the right.

Now, had this been Professor Fletcher's class or even the Headmaster's , he would not have moved. Nuhuh. But this was professor Stewart. She was nice and she had even given the Slytherin Prefect a simple pass for not paying attention so without wanting to be too loud and interrupt her, Dorian stood up from his chair, hunched over and made his way over to grab his pen.

Once he got it, he silently walked back and sat back down. "Psst, Rylee. Can i see your notes?" he whispered to the Gryffindor sitting next to him because he had definitely missed something.

He did hear the instructions though, so the fourteen year old pressed the silver button like was instructed which was probably the easiest task he had done at Hogwarts so far.

No offense, but Zoryn was booooooooooored. She could honestly fall asleep at any given moment. Didn't sound like a bad idea even tbh. Only these chairs were RIDICULOUSLY uncomfortable. "Can we get some beanbags in here next time, Professor?" Asking for a friend.

Because Zoryn was her own best friend.

Also Faith's.

fyi.

Anyways, she was pressing the dumb button thing. And the monitor was booting up.

Cool. Could they leave now?

Notes? Abra... was not taking notes. He generally did not make a habit of it which, okay, yeah, was part of the problem he had faced when OWLs had rolled around a few months back, but it just took a lot of effort. He did, however, at least have his parchment and pen out, and was roughly sketching a picture of the computer in front of him. If anyone asked, he was drawing a diagram and absolutely not just doodling in an attempt to keep his eyes open.

Because Professor Stewart had already lost him. Those were a lot of words that he wasn't entirely able to process, and as a result the information just sort of fluttered uselessly around his brain. Luckily, before too long, it was time to turn the computer on.

Setting down his pen, Abra stared at the machine in front of him, eyes raking over it for some time before he finally located the silver button. He pressed it, made sure it turned blue, then sat back and waited for everything to 'boot up'.

Patrick watched as all of his classmates began pressing the button. He felt odd having someone tell him how to boot up a computer when he had been doing such a thing his whole life. He really needed to reconsider the whole taking muggle studies class. Sometimes it was interesting to see the wizard in perspective on these things but here lately it seemed he was doing stuff he had already done. But that was the nature of the beast he supposed when his parents basically raised him as a muggle.

He pushed in the button crossing his arms across his chest praying Stewart wouldn’t take points from him for eating that apple it slipped his mind and honestly he would have done it at home. He watched the other students and prayed something strange might happen just for a moment.... maybe a Peeves?

Smiling at the younger girl (Stella) prior to the official start of class, the Hufflepuff simply offered her a casual shrug of the shoulder. Had he spiraled about the whole thing? Yes, but not to the extent he thought he would have. Perhaps it was his parent's letter that had helped put him at ease somewhat - them being disappointed that he had gotten into trouble so early in the term for not following instructions that even he himself found straightforward but also proud that he had stood up for himself and was coming into his own. That was how all victories were, wasn't it? Bittersweet. "Don't be," he assured her with a soft smile. "I'm okay." He caught the Gryffindor boy's look as well and simply offered him a tight reassuring smile too.

But then it was on to class proper and it took a lot of effort for him not to allow his eyes to glaze over as a bunch of terms were thrown about that, well, were more foreign to him than parseltongue. Least he had the clarification on the world wide web versus the Internet. Sort of. Did muggles hear how they talked about technology? It was confusing. And he, well, he preferred using books for research. This online stuff...seemed a little sketchy to him for reasons he couldn't really explain.

But silver button...right. There, er, looked like there were a FEW of those...so the sixth year looked anxiously around the room and hoped his eyes were timed in just the right way that he caught someone else turning theirs on so he could copy. Thankfully....they did, and fell on Natalie as she turned hers on. On...THAT button. Monkey see monkey do, Derf pressed his own button and then waited as it flickered blue and came a sort of pleasant chime ... or some sort of TADA noise. As for note taking, well, the page was still blank as he had caught absolutely nothing that Professor Stewart has said. He was, however, peering at all the other buttons on the box thingy. So thankfully he was not blinded when the screen switch on with a gentle sort of click.

Oh, a BUTTON??? Chloe bounced out of her seat to hunt all over her computer station for the button the professor was talking about. Or maybe she just wanted an excuse to poke all the buttons, touch the keyboard, wipe dust from the screen, and jiggle the plug in the back.

All in order, and Chloe took her seat again. And she pushed her button. The computer hummed a little, but it didn't seem to be doing anything else. Yet. Did it take a minute?

Daehyun was taking notes but, really... this whole world wide web thingy... was it like a big, wide object somewhere on the planet that stored the whole network? How could people connect through it?!

Oh, Merlin, this was giving him a headache. After class, he'll probably go straight to the library.

And the button. Alright, sounded simple enough. He'd located it easily, and pushed it warily, as if the button were the enemy. The surface beneath the tip of his finger lit up in blue, and he moved his hand away from it. Now what did professor Stewart mean by, the monitor will begin to boot up? Boot?

... was all that writing supposed to show up on the monitor? Was that the booting up?

Anyway, it was time to turn it on. That seemed easy enough. Natalie reached forward and pressed the silver button, and, to her expectations, it turned blue and the screen started to light up. She pitied anyone who couldn't manage THAT.

But none the less the fourteen year old pressed the button and waited, still somewhat bored. Wooooooooo muggle studies meant getting online... maybe she'd at least get a chance to talk to her parents without having to owl them.

All in order, and Chloe took her seat again. And she pushed her button. The computer hummed a little, but it didn't seem to be doing anything else. Yet. Did it take a minute?

Oh, Merlin, this was giving him a headache. After class, he'll probably go straight to the library.

And the button. Alright, sounded simple enough. He'd located it easily, and pushed it warily, as if the button were the enemy. The surface beneath the tip of his finger lit up in blue, and he moved his hand away from it. Now what did professor Stewart mean by, the monitor will begin to boot up? Boot?

... was all that writing supposed to show up on the monitor? Was that the booting up?

Walking among the kiddos, Kay was pleased to see that practically all of them were able to follow her instructions. Well, it wasn’t a tough bit of the lesson so there was that. She also felt that she needed to mention something about the computers and their state. “I know these computers are rather old but unfortunately, I was not able to succeed in securing newer models. Never the less, I have no doubt that the situation will change soon.’’ There was too much that had happened behind the scenes with her trying to secure the necessary funds to fully update her Room. Let’s simply say that being possessed by a certain pair of American twins hadn’t helped her situation; her continued service of teaching at Hogwarts still cast doubt in some minds. Kay pushed the horrible thoughts away. At least she had been allowed to keep the internet coverage. “If you encounter difficulties such as the monitors not displaying, the CPUs making loud buzzing or anything of the sort.’’ Really... the professor had made sure to check all of the equipment prior to the lesson but with technology, anything could happen at any time.

"One more thing. Do not worry about missing any notes. Everything will remain on the board until the end of the day.’’ Meaning, they could return to finish their note taking before their curfew.

SPOILER!!: Nathan! <3

Now that was a great question! What a wonderfully curious mind Nathan had, or so it seemed to Kaysha. “The current order of the keyboard dates all the way back to the initial invention of the typewriter. Originally, the keys were in alphabetical order but there were some persons who would type at rapid speed. This resulted in the arms that the letters were imprinted on to become tangled. Since then, the arms were randomly re-positioned to solve this problem and had remained in this order. What we have now is known as the QWERTY keyboard and is used on cellular phones as well. It is called QWERTY because of the first six letters.’’

Because Zoryn was her own best friend.

Also Faith's.

fyi.

Anyways, she was pressing the dumb button thing. And the monitor was booting up.

Cool. Could they leave now?

“I really can’t risk having you lot too comfortable, can I?’’ Kay responded and with a wink. “The chances of falling asleep are higher than ever because of your morning exercises.’’ Maybe she would think about it next year if she still taught here and if the stupid exercises were scrapped.

* * * * * * *

“Has everyone’s computer booted up? Wonderful!’’ If they all hadn’t, the kiddos were always free to let her know. Kay was still a little nervous about the equipment giving out. “Take a minute or two to familiarise yourself with what you see on the screen- also called the desktop. The small images you see are called ‘icons’ and these allow you to access programmes. Each computer in the Room have a few basic icons: the recycle bin which looks like a rubbish bin and is used to store deleted items.’’ She paused so that they could write this down. “The gear which is the Settings icon and allows you to change how you wish to set the computer’s time, date, icon size and format among a host of other features.’’ It was too much to get into and she did not wish to confuse their mind so she moved onto a more interesting bit and one of the focus areas of the lesson- the Chrome icon.

“On that desktop, there is a circle that stands out since it has four colours, the House colours if you will. It’s called the Chrome icon and it lets you access one of the top search engines in the Muggle world. Go ahead. Use your mouse to point the arrow to it and then click rapidly twice. If that’s done correctly, a web page will be displayed.’’

Any trouble? Freezing of screens? This woman was hoping not.

“The page that pops up will have the three Ws in the URL bar in addition to the complete address for the website. You’ll see the Google logo, a search bar which is the rectangular one below the logo among some other features. It is interesting to note that Google offers a host of services including email.

“In addition to Google, there are other search engines. However, they are not as popular. A few include...’’
Now Kaysha was back at the board, making notes as she spoke. “Bing.com, Yahoo.com, and ask.com.’’ The marker was capped and she idly stuck it in her brown hair which was clipped high atop her head so that the marker nestled among the strands.

“We’ll pause here for those of you who need me to explain anything once more, to take notes or to catch up on opening that page. Or if the system you’re using is giving you trouble. Please raise your hand if you need help.’

OOC: Hello Yesss, the systems are ancient, yo I thought it would be fun? XD Also, they’re all using Windows operating systems. Catchup from the first part of the activity is still allowed so go, go, go get that done if you need to! Another post to come in 24 hours! If you need to contact me, I'm always reachable on Skype and FB.
