| | | Grow-your-own-food Garden [behold, the garden] Paul Myers' garden, which has been here at Hogwarts for terms now, looks slightly smaller this term. Near the side, there is a large portioned off square that looks as if someone has sprinkled newly strewn soil all over the ground. Where once flowers grew is now a fresh area of dirt. Don't worry; those plants have all been moved to various other spots. The Paul-made fence around the area is, mostly, for decoration, so do try not to lean on the wood. It will probably not withstand much weight. There are shovels resting inside the garden for anyone willing to start the epic adventure of growing their own food! Packets of seeds in small pouches dangle from various fence-posts, and there are some bird houses, too, just to complete the feel of the garden.
The packets of seeds include: tomatoes, potatoes, onions, radishes, lettuce, mint, strawberries, purple broccoli, raspberries, figs, rhubarb. For each plant you wish to grow, simply pick a few seeds, section off where you want to plant your foods, and plant away! Dangling in the corner fenceposts are little signs that can be spiked into the ground. Designate your area using these signs; write your name on it, mark your spot. Grow whatever hits your fancy, but beware. Growing too many plants in one spot might suffocate your plant children. Professor Myers can also be found nearby for help with this if you wish to ask for assistance, or if you have never done this before and would like to know where to start.
Myers cannot wait to see what kinds of foods his students grow in here. Perhaps...there is a feast in the stars, eh? PS. Paul Myers loves strawberries, pass it on. |

After roaming the ground a bit, looking for a way to burn off some extra stress, she stumbled upon a little patch of dirt. Not just any dirt, but a prepped and ready garden! Her heart pounded with excitement. It would be the perfect mix of stress relief and exercise. Plus, she would be gaining some great herbology skills and FOOD.
Her eyes scanned the area, noting the seed packets, signs, and tools. It was all there and ready to go. She grabbed a sign and marked off her area. Quote:

Personal garden KEEP OUT
I'm happy to share
The next thing she needed to do was select which seeds to plant. The only problem was, she had never planted anything edible before. She wasn't exactly sure how much time things took to grow or how much space they needed. Not wanting to mess up before she even got started, she glanced all around the area, hoping to catch sight of Professor Myers. He could usually be found working around the area, so she gave calling for him a try. "Professor Myers? Are you out here?"

| A Poop * k8 * "No! I'm not hereeee! I'm somewhere else!" A voice called out from some bushes beyond the garden. They were well kept and well trimmed bushes, and Paul was looking quite the gardener right now as he swung his shears over his shoulder. Sometimes, you just felt like not using magic and doing things the dirty, hard way. He had dirt on his nose...and some on his thick gloves, too.
He smirked as he peeked into the garden. "I'm only teasing. Do you need help with someone, m'dear?" He enjoyed students actually USING this place. It was THEIRS, after all!

Her head whipped around at the sound of his familiar voice. She scanned the area and spotted Professor Myers with his shears on his shoulder and giggled. "Hi, sir." She greeted her head of house with a dazzling smile. He was very much a father figure to her and it always brought her joy to be around him. "I do need some help, sir." That was an understatement. She had absolutely no idea where to start, other than the sign she made. "I would like to start a garden, but I don't exactly know how." She strode over to the seed packets. "Which seeds are best to use and how far apart should they be? I don't want to overcrowd them, but the seeds are so tiny I'm not sure how to imagine them full grown."
It occurred to her that it was kind of like the students. They all started out small, ready to be fed and grow. There was no way of telling how they would all turn out. Some would grow to be great witches and wizards, others would be less developed, and some wouldn't turn out well at all. Her stomach did a little flip wondering which one she would be.

Don't know how to start a garden?! Paul chuckled because starting a garden was easier than people thought. You plant seeds. Water. Give it love. Repeat. Heh. "For how far apart to spread them....it depends on the plant, m'dear. Here let me--" and he began to make his way into the garden. Opening the wooden gate...pulling off his gloves and hanging them on one of the wooden posts. "Do you want...to grow...which food? I can point out which ones are good for beginners?" He made a thiiiiiinking face. "Tomatoes are a good option for a first timer...carrots...things like that." Did they have packets of those? Paul began to search in the little holders... "I found some tomatoes? I think I hadn't included carrots..but maybe I'll have to order them. Hmmm." He patted her shoulder. "Don't be afraid to start a garden, Emmalyn. You'll do far better than you think."

You'll do far better than you think." She stood back so he could enter the garden by way of the wooden gate. She'd forgotten how at home he looked among the plants. Sure, she saw him regularly in the Hufflepuff common room and in Herbology class, but she felt as if there was a real difference in the way he held himself around so much life. "I think tomatoes would be a grand place to start. I love tomatoes." She thought for a moment, "I also like watermelon, but is it too late in the year to plant them?" She wasn't positive, but she felt like most vegetables and fruits needed to be planted in the spring. Unfortunately, it was October and Halloween was quickly approaching. "Oh, is there a way to plant pumpkins and give them a little magical boost to grow by Halloween? I could carve them and even roast the seeds. How about those sweet pie pumpkins too? I could make pie! I love pumpkin pie." She glanced around the area she marked off. Surely there was enough space for more than one type of vegetable.

Watermelon? "Well, probably. Typically you wouldn't grow watermelon right now, but if you wanted some magically enhanced ones, we could work on some in the greenhouses." This garden was for good ole' fashion home-grown FOODS. Paul wouldn't mind helping her if she wanted to, though! It was his last term and he was prepared to enjoy it fully and completely!
Ooooooh! Pumpkins, though! Paul thought it would be a good idea. "You should have been here a few terms ago...I did a very surprise and special lesson on giant pumpkins. We even bowled with them! I know how to grow magically enhanced BIG ones, yes. There are a special KIND of breed of giant pumpkins, too. I have some seeds if you wanted?" He smiled. "The bred ones are better." As they had learned in his mighty useful lesson!
Now he wanted pumpkin pie, darn it! He'd just need a pick-me-up from the kitchens after this was all.

She nodded in agreement at the watermelons not being the right season. They were quickly approaching winter, and she knew they would be limited. "I would have loved to seen those giant pumpkins! I bet they made the best jack-o-lanterns." Her mind raced with the carving possibilities with a pumpkin that large. "I'd like to try some of those out, so, yes please to the seeds."
She scanned her plot for the perfect place to plant pumpkins. She gestured towards the far corner "Over there would be a good spot for pumpkins, yes? Away from the main area, so the vines don't take over and kill the other things I might plant." She was trying to picture how pumpkins grew and she was fairly certain that they grew on vines. "I think I might try my hand a growing some radishes and maybe some kale? Would those grow this close to winter? Oh, and some Brussels sprouts? We always had those back in the states for Thanksgiving." If so, she would be able to make a salad and some yummy roasted Brussels sprouts over the Christmas holiday. She knew she would be spending all of her holiday at Hogwarts again. Her parents still hadn't spoken with her since she left for Hogwarts over a year ago.
