The second level houses three different enclosure for some of our favorite rodents; mice (magical), pygmy puffs, and some ole' fashioned hamsters. Any of the badgers can come play and interact with these little guys as well as be responsible for keeping them fed, making sure there's water, and any other cage maintenance that needs to be done. There are whiteboards for all of the things that need to be done for each of the rodents in a gridded sort of spreadsheet, and when one of you does something for any of the rodents you should sign your name in the respective square.
In addition to the rodent enclosures, there is almost giant versions of some of the wheels in the rodents' cages. Ever wanted to run on a mouse wheel? Well, here's your chance, students! Get that exercise in even when you don't feel like going outside! There is also a giant tube to crawl through, too, for those playful at heart.
Among all of the pygmy puffs, and mice, and hamsters, all fairly normal in size, there was one seemingly enormous pygmy puff. On closer inspection, though, you'd notice...this was no pygmy puff. This was a full grown PUFFSKEIN!
Dilly-dallying along with his pygmy puff comrades casually, this puffskein is especially used to humans, likes boogers, and probably wants to eat yours.

You know, when Bel came to Hogwarts, put a saggy old hat on her head, and was sorted into Hufflepuff house, the last thing she had expected was to end up living in a burrow with some actual rodents.
....
....
..... BUT SHE LOVED IT!
It was very quickly a part of her daily schedule, feeding the little critters and giving them a bit of attention, so her name begun to make an appearance on the board quite early in the term.
"Hey little fella!" She greeted the puffskein and walked past to consider the human sized contraptions, her hands on her hips. Well she much preferred to go outside but it got SO cold here for her Aussie self that she was happy to think there was a way for her to get exercise once all the snowing started!

Derf had been BEYOND EXCITED about this addition to the common room, but all the additional stuff he had to worry about and do as a prefect on top of getting back into the groove of being back at Hogwarts had sorta left him without ample time to properly enjoy the space. But he still managed to make a routine out of giving them little nibbles of this and that in the morning before he rushed off to class - save for those mornings he had overslept but...ya know.
But today was DIFFERENT. Homework done. No patrols until night. No studying he couldn't put off for a few hours.
"Hey Bel!" he chirped as he bound over to the enclosures and laid his bright blues on the puffskein there. "Hey there, buddy," he grinned, getting to his knees and resting both his hands down for it to sniff and crawl into should it feel like it. Didn't want to force it to interact with him if it wasn't feeling like it. "Don't think Professor Myers has names for any of these guys," he noted, glancing around for name plaques or something. "We should fix that."

Perhaps being sorted to Hufflepuff wasn't that bad. Most people here were very nice and welcoming, plus the common room was quite nice and located next to the kitchen. But still, Diandra thought that she didn't really fit into this house. Identity crisis here? Maybe. But let's just... slowly embrace it and probably she would find the reason why the sorting hat thought she was a Hufflepuff material.
Speaking of the common room, she found herself stepping into this... rodent area? The new badger was not really a fan of squeaky creatures so it's kind of weird that she ended up here. But her curiosity won and there were two students currently observing on... "Is that a giant pygmy puff?" Diandra blurted out asking her house mates.

It's a fairytale evening, and you want the entire event to be totally dazzling and
a real experience with the friendliest people around you.
The sound of footsteps either meant food, company, water, or play time! All four, if they wee lucky, and they usually were! The PUFFSKEIN! scrambled over to the familiar face of a young girl and sniffed in her direction. It hummed happily and wondered if she had any leftovers with her. Snacks?
Its BIIIIIIIIIIIIG eyes did their best to plea up at her.
Or cuddles. Cuddles would be nice.
Boogers? Bogeys? Did she need her nose cleaned?
It rolled around a few times to get closer to her and suddenly, it stopped. Two more had joined! This was this little guy's lucky day! He DID sniff the boy's hand and then promptly crawl onto his arm and to his shoulder, licking the side of his ear curiously.
Night missed her dogs at home. Maybe next year, she could bring them, but she'd need special permission. Maybe a cat then? No, her no-maj parents were allergic, meaning she probably was too. Either way, her face brightened when she saw the rodent immersion area.
The creatures called Pygmy Puffs made her a little nervous. She didn't really like charmed animals, and the big one seemed overly friendly with people. However, she'd always wanted a hamster, and the ones here did not disappoint. She had three crawling over her, as well as holding one in a ball. She thought she had heard Derf say that the animals didn't really have names, and she thought Sprinkles would be perfect for the little black and white one that was currently on her left shoulder.
"Here, Sprinkles," she laughed, cupping her hands after carefully setting the hamster ball down. She didn't really expect anything of it, but to her surprise, the hamster jumped into her hands. Night was very impressed. "He knows his name already," she grinned.

"Hey D!" Bel answered cheerfully, and then looked at the older girl who had just joined them. Unfamiliar face right there, but Bel wasn't one to let that deter her from being friendly. "Well I don't reckon he's that giant, but he IS lovely." The puffskein that was. "And hello! I'm Bel."
But what was that about names? And who was Sprinkles? She looked at the first year inquisitively and then at the hamster in her hands. LOOKED like a Sprinkles actually, Bel was suitably impressed. She looked at Derf. "So we can just name them?"
ALL OF THEM?
...
.... except that wouldn't be fair and they should leave some to name for all the other kids in their house really.
"What's your name then, lil fella?" She addressed the puffskein and watched with great interest as it hummed and licked at Derf.

To Derf's delight, the creature selected him as his person of the moment and even went so far as to scamper up his arm and to his shoulder. Good thing Picketta had been left in the nursery today or else she would have been insanely jealous and, well, likely would have attempt to attack the poor thing even without it having malicious intent. "H-H-Hey there," he chuckled, shrugging his shoulder a bit at the tongue to his ear because SO ticklish. Turning his head and giving the puffskein an affectionate nuzzle - also, you know, offering his nose if it wanted - Derf looked up when he heard Diandra joined him and Bel. "Well, actually, pygmy puffs ARE minature puffskeins," he grinned.
Be still his Hufflepuff heart. The puffskein's humming was just so sldjflskjfsls. It was the perfect sort of white noise to lull one into a peaceful state, you know? Which got him thinking....
"Is there like...a neat word for hum?" he wondered, glancing over at Bel specifically at the moment. "Or maybe...Melody?" Hmm...something MUSICAL felt right. "Sprinkles, that's brilliant," he nodded over to Amanda, hearing her name one of the pygmy puffs. "We ought keep a running list of names...." he continued, padding his enchanted trouser pocket for a piece of parchment. Though he had no quills on him at the moment. "Can stick it to the wall for people to add and stuff."

She didn't really know much about magical creatures because CoMC wasn't her favorite class, but Diandra knew about pygmy puffs because she had seen them when she was out around the Diagon Alley. Turning to the girl who had a really thick Australian accent, she smiled and introduced herself. "Hi, Bel. I'm Diandra."
So this fluffy thing was called puffskein. She listened to Derf's explanation about pygmy puffs are actually miniature of this. "Oh, really? I didn't know about that." The badger was amazed. Even though this creature seemed harmless and cute but she still kept distance at it because to be honest, she wasn't a fan of creatures. Heh. "Do you think the other students should vote on the name? Because well... we can put a drop box here and then they will vote but first... We do need some name's suggestion." And she wasn't really good at naming things. "I like Sprinkles though."

The nose was offered. So of course he inserted his tongue inside and nommed some delicious bogeys from the boy's nose.
YUM!
Happy, the little guy rolled off of the male student quickly and headed straight for the open door to the area the girl had just come through and rollllllllled to level down below, to the common room.

ADVENTURE. BOGEYS AND ADVENTURE!!!!!!!!
First of all it was gross watching a puffskein slurp at someone's nose. Gross but hilarious. Bel laughed and covered her own nose just in case, and watched the puffskein head down to the common room.
"G'day Diandra." She said, still laughing. "I don't think it wants to stick around to be named, whatever kind of puff it is." A puff looking for adventure, that's what it was.
"I didn't know pygmy puffs were just little puffskeins. Don't really see either of them back home, y'know?" So was that one just a particularly big puffskein or were they all that size? Bel turned her attention for a moment to one of the hamsters as it filled its cheeks with bits of carrot, not particularly worried about what the puffskein might get up to in the common room itself.
They weren't known for being a menace, were they?
