| | History of Magic lesson 1 - Write the law The desks and chairs are arranged in their usual positions. Charles is sitting behind his desk writing something with a scroll. On top of every desk is a brown sheet of paper and a quill and ink jar. BY ORDER OF: is written in large black letters at the top of each sheet. There does not appear to be any magical qualities about either the quill and ink or the sheet, and there are no further clues as to what these sheets shall be used for. "Good morning ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls," Charles said as you file into the classroom and sit at your seats. Ladies and gentlemen? That WAS a strange way to greet Hogwarts students, yes it was. That was how he used to greet grown scholars in a packed room before giving a presentation on history. By now the students probably would have gotten used to it since this was how he greeted them at the start of every class.
Lesson will commence shortly! In the meantime just settle down in your seat and you can talk to each other if you want, Charles doesn't mind. OOC: Lesson has begun. If you want you can pretend your student was here all along, though! Lesson progression: First question Second question Activity |

Hogwarts RPG Name: Daehyun "Daniel" Yoon Third Year | Ahh, History of Magic. It wasn't something Daehyun was particularly good at, especially since his biggest trouble was remembering dates, but he enjoyed doing some extra reading after each lesson.
Having overslept, his cheeks were flushed as he walked into the classroom, only to find that he'd run all the way there in vain, and arrived there on time. "Good morning, professor!" he greeted in between heavy breaths, before dropping his bag next to the nearest desk in the front. He was about to pull out parchment and his quill, but then he'd noticed they already had everything they needed to write on the desks.
Blinking in confusion and chewing on his bottom lip in thought, he looked up at the professor. "Are these- charmed for anything in particular?" Why else would they be given those papers and quills? |

History of Magic. It wasn't one of her favourite subjects. Sometimes it could be a little dry, and boring. She still went though. The blonde thought history was important. It was necessary to learn about one's past in order to make sure that mistakes were not repeated. That was why she still took the class. She just hoped that the lesson may be a little more interested today. Or at least a topic that wasn't going to send her to sleep anyway. She popped the last grape into her mouth as she turned and entered the classroom. Ooh. Not many people were here yet, but that was okay. "Good day Professor" The blonde murmured with a smile, before she went to find herself a seat.
The blonde was about to get her ink and quill out when she noticed the brown parchment, ink and quill on the floor. Hmm. Interesting. She tilted her head to the side, and thought about it. Hmm. Wonder what this was for. Only time (or the lesson) would tell.

Rylee was still unsure how she felt about History of Magic. It wasn't to easy of a lesson but it wasn't all that hard either. Unless remembering all those dates, names and places were taken into account. Sometimes she had a tendency of mixing up dates and things. It really depended on what they were learning about and if it was entertaining enough to fully grasp her attention and keep it. "Good morning, professor!," she chirped happily giving the man a bright smile. "Hi, Miss Harriet. Hi, Daniel." Rylee gave the older girl and her fellow lion cub a wave. Finding an empty seat was really easy this morning since there wasn't anyone else here but the four of them. Selecting a seat she sat down and set her bag at her feet.
What's this? Why was there parchment, a quill and ink already on her desk? On... everyone's desk. Uhh... "Are we not going to be needing our own things today, professor?" Did that mean no purple ink?

| connoisseur of comfort ❅ Crayola's Wibby Mrs Alex Turner ❅ Netflix and meow Max enjoyed learning and was a believer of regularly feeding the brain new knowledge. History of Magic, however, was just one of those lessons where he found it difficult to concentrate.
"Morning Sir," the Slytherin greeted half-heartedly as he entered the classroom. He found himself an empty desk to slip behind... and then realised that it wasn't actually empty at all.
He studied the supplies at his desk and after peering around noticed that all the desks were topped with a headed sheet of paper, quill and ink jar.

| Dem Carters | even 🕊🕊 have pride | | Expecto PAWtronum 🐈 | U-NA-GI The dark under-eye circles that had plagued his face for a good portion of last term were back. That was why he was hiding them with the dark tinted aviator-style sunglasses he was wearing. Of course, the rest of his outfit was the standard Hogwarts uniform, minus the outer robes as usual. Looking around, he was surprised that no one else seemed affected by what was happening in this very castle yet again. I mean, A GIANT BLOODY (almost literally) HAWK ON THE CLOCK TOWER?! Two separate messages in two separate places in two separate styles of handwriting reading 'expose the struggle' and 'end the inequality'?! Honestly, he didn't expect those who weren't here last term to be bothered, but those who were? Then again, the only one here as of right now who really fit that category he wouldn't trust with his life anyway. She always seemed to be off in who knows where.
Anyway, these were the thoughts that were running around in his head as he entered the History of Magic classroom. So much so, that the quill, ink and paper that were lying on the desk he chose to sit at didn't register at first. But on second look, it did. Oh man, did this mean no ink pen? No notebook? Also, what was the 'by order of' about? "Good morning, Professor Curtains." Ronan's voice might have sounded a little more lackluster than usual.

| ❅ Purple Lightsaber ❅| | Captain Sarcastic | It was the popular census that History of magic wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Yes, it was boring, Juni wouldn’t dispute anyone who said that it was. But she did enjoy it herself until the point of how boring it was hit her. Then she know it was time to take a nap or find something better to spend her time on.
The Ravenclaw fourth year headed into the classroom. ”Hello Professor.” She gave him a small smile before heading to a seat. Waving to both Hattie and Rylee as she passed them.
Juni, spotted Maxon sitting just a little farther down, ”Hi, Maxon.” Sitting down close by him. She took her book and other things out of her bag. Sitting them on her lap because there was a parchment where she sit was going to sit her book at.
She picked up the paper, looked at it, flipped it over and back over. What was all of this about? ”Do you think something else is written in invisible ink?” She asked out loud and to no one specific.

| YesJess! | Captain Goggles | Mama Badger | Eva's Soul Sister | An OG™ | It's all in the Numbers In all honesty, Skylar still wasn't quite used to Professor Curtains' teaching methods yet. Which semi made sense, considering she'd had Professor Newton Marchand for the last two or three years? How was she able to remember random facts and years but remembering how long she had a Hogwarts Professor was seemingly impossible? Probably because professors changed so frequently? But irregardless, Curtains was definitely different and the sixth year wasn't used to it, but she was making do. "Morning, Professor," she smiled politely. Like, what was up with the 'ladies and gents'. Kind of weird. The snakette found herself making her way to a seat somewhere in the middle but closer to the back.

History of Magic time! She folded her arms and bit her lip as she waited in the queue to enter into the classroom. Once she got in, she heard Professor Curtains greeting. Her eyebrows raised a little. Quirky greeting indeed. Uhh... Ladies and gentleman caught her off guard.... She smiled and offered a semi-awkward wave, "Hey Professor Curtains. Having a good day?"
She gave a quick nod to several of her fellow classmates before taking a seat near Ronan. "Hey Ronan," she greeted as she settled her things on the desk before taking a seat. After their experience last year near the bulletin board and the recent reappearances of this image, Vi wondered what he thought of it all. She leaned a little over towards him. "Did you see the hawk?" she asked quietly.
Blue eyes widened as she saw the pieces of parchment on the table. Intriguing. "By Order of...." Dolores Umbridge and her many decrees? Was that what they were going to be studying perhaps?

Ava Clarke Accidents & Catastrophes | Kye entered the classroom and grumpily sat down at a desk. She. was. STARVING. "Morning, Professor," she greeted, trying not to sound too upset as it wasn't Professor Curtains' fault she didn't get to eat... Stomach threatening to sound the alarm, she picked a seat and slumped into it.
At her desk, she stared at the desk's contents. Decrees, huh... Kye could only imagine what fun facts about decrees of years past they'd be discussing. She was busy grumbling to herself, ready to have a full conversation with her growling stomach any minute now when a conversation peaked her interest.

Junia wasn't particularly interested in History of Magic. It wasn't that she didn't think history was important or that she didn't think there was something to be learned from witches and wizards of the past, it was simply that it often times resulted in a whole lot of information to retain in a boring, endless package. She was here, though. She'd been taking an active role in all her classes now that she was on the Quidditch team, in the play. She owed it to her captain and director to be present, set an example, and that's what she was trying to do, even if it meant sitting through this class. "Hello Professor." The man received a curtsy and then the brunette found a seat by Skylar. "Hey."

Patrick walked in just as tired as everyone else. He had been hearing and witnessing the strange things. His mind was constantly racing with questions about what would have happened if he had gone to school back in the states. "Morning Professor!" he stated before moving over to his seat hoping that every thing would be easy peasy today because he was so tired. Hopefully, just hopefully things would go okay.

| Puff by day, snake by night | Mj's bestie | Always UP to Something... History of Magic was one of those classes that Zita pawned homework off on others. James would get whatever assignment they had for the day.
As she walked in she looked for that Gryffindor, but not seeing him she smiled at the rest. "Hello Professor" he got a wiggle of her fingers before she headed more into the room.
Who to sit with was one of the most important things to do in each class, that would be who you might have to copy from or who you might have to make a comment with,
these things always made her check out the area from the time she hit the door until she found the perfect spot.
Was it going to be near Ronan or Maxton?
Ronan was fun to have a go at, but Maxton was sweet and she enjoyed sitting with him in classes. Hmmm choices, in the end, she picked a desk that sat in the middle of the classroom. She couldn't just share the love of being near her with just those two.
Oh they were talking about the bird that had been showing up, Z would be listening for any information that could help her with her next writings.

Mr. Bedsheets and Mrs. Dishtowel? Seriously, what a strange man. Which made this class slightly more interesting, but for the most part... Just plain weird. "Hi," she greeted the man, quickly bounding towards a seat near someone she knew (which happened to be Rylee!!!).
Turning to her teammate, the Gryffindor leaned in to whisper "he gets weirder by the minute."
What was this order stuff about by the way? Were they gonna write essays? 'Cause Zoryn was all out of skiving snackbox excuses.

| Shoe!Girl │ Rebel Ravie │ Confundus Queen │ RP Addict If it had nothing else going for it, History of Magic was always interesting. At least, that was how Stasya saw it, even if lately she’d had more curiosity about the new professor instead of the subject matter. Maybe just because they rarely discussed anything she really found interesting, except for maybe the stuff about Hogwarts itself. Even so, she didn’t dislike the subject quite as much as she disliked others, so she had a smile on her face as she entered the classroom. Nothing extremely weird about the layout, either, besides the parchment and stuff on all the desks, so she’d made her way over to the seat on the other side of Rylee from where Zoryn had planted herself. “Good Morning, Professor Curtains. How are you today?,” she greeted the professor, as she settled into her seat and got a better look at the parchment on the desk. ‘By the order of…’ what?, she wondered. It seemed awfully official, and kind of disconcerting. Especially since they’d been provided with ink and everything. Definitely weird.

Shera trudged into History of Magic feeling... weird.
Something was going on and she wasn't sure what it was. She also wasn't sure whether or not she was meant to be worried about it or if the Professors had it covered. Although, they might be in on it. She was still paranoid after the DADA sudden attack. She still waved at the professor, smiling as best as she could despite being trapped in her own thoughts. "Morning Professor," she greeted, dropping down on a chair by herself to give her time to relax before class started.
Her eyes scanned over the parchment in front of her, contemplating what this could end up being about...

She could see some kids taking advantage of those to order each other around for fun. Also.... did she not need her pens and things? Bel sat down, hanging her bag over the back of her seat, and looked up at the professor's greeting. "Hello professor." She said. Was it just her or were some people looking a bit less than their best? Like that Gryffindor boy that passed out in potions, Ronan, he looked a bit rough. She gave him a sympathetic smile and then flicked through the 'order of' papers. Hmmmm.

It looked like the students were just getting to their seats, of which he was incredibly relieved. If there was one thing he didnt like about being Head Boy (there was a growing list mind) is that one little mistake thats normally overlooked on most people gets magnified to ridiculous levels when its done by him. Being late would either mean he's a bad role model, is entitled, is attention seeking, is a moving target or all of the above and more. So the sigh he makes as he hastily flops into a seat next to Vi means more than just him being out of breath.
And in his haste, he even forgot to greet the Professor. He gave the man a wave hello as he met his eyes. And now theres a parchment with the thing written on it. Nope nothing about it registers as anything unusual or historical. Brain still trying to calm down there. |

The walk up to the History of Magic classroom had been filled with whispers about hawks and warnings and having run into her own earlier, it was hard to pass it off as paranoia from the previous year. That meant one thing, it was all happening again. It figured this would happen. A book on the darkest of arts was taken from the library and that'd seemed to be the end of its mention. Besides ushering the students away from the scenes and assuring them "everything would be fine".......there was nothing else.....and now they would likely have to sit through some overly expressive bugger for another term.
Merlin help her if anymore talks on the statute got brought up for class discussions, the Ravenclaw would likely lose it.
Not being in the best of moods, Jessa merely mumbled her greeting to the quirky Professor as she went and took a seat with Bel. The girl got a nod of greeting before her eyes fell to the sheet of paper. She was already getting a bad feeling about this.

"Morning," Felicity greeted Professor Curtains as quickly as she could whilst still being polite, her head bowed as she turned and sought out a seat at the back of the classroom. Her friends got little nods, and even the slightest smile, which was about as much as she could muster.
It was draining, worrying who hated you and who didn't. And then, to add insult to injury, those blood-drawing warning things were back - she'd passed one in the basement on the way up to her lesson, and a visible shudder had passed down her back. Trying to force her negative thoughts away, she dropped her back to the floor and sat down, not getting anything out of it due to the presence of a quill, ink and parchment already on the desk.
By order of who, exactly?

"By Order Of..." Night groaned. This was probably some sort of a test, and it was way too early in the morning to have to think and remember names and dates. If she was right, she hoped they could use notes. Or, she thought, trying to be optimistic, it could just be that he ran out of other paper. But if that was the case, why hadn't he said just to bring parchment of their own? Nope, this looked far too official to be anything but stressful.

"Good morning Daniel," he said brightly, barely looking up as the Gryfindor made his way to a desk. He did look up when asked about the papers. "Indeed they are, but you will find out for what purpose as the lesson proceeds." The edge of his lips twitched in a smile as he thought of their surprise once they knew what this was for. Quote:

He anticipated he'd be receiving a lot of questions about them and that meant he'd have to repeat himself a good deal. Quote:

Finding an empty seat was really easy this morning since there wasn't anyone else here but the four of them. Selecting a seat she sat down and set her bag at her feet.
What's this? Why was there parchment, a quill and ink already on her desk? On... everyone's desk. Uhh... "Are we not going to be needing our own things today, professor?" Did that mean no purple ink? "Good morning Rylee," he replied, smiling as she greeted the others and moved to sit. "You may use your own writing materials if you wish, I just provided the quills for authenticity." What did he mean by that? Well, they'd be finding out soon enough! Quote:

He studied the supplies at his desk and after peering around noticed that all the desks were topped with a headed sheet of paper, quill and ink jar. "Well good morning, Maxton," he said, the edges of his lips twitching as the Slytherin moved to sit. Was it just him, or did Maxton sound not too enthusiastic about History of Magic? He'd noticed this during other lessons throughout the year. Well, Charles had a feeling this lesson MIGHT just prove to be an exception. He couldn't imagine anyone not being interested in the activity he was about to set for them. Quote:

"Good mooorning, Ronan!" Charles said in a jolly sort of way as he finished writing whatever it was he'd been writing all this time. Looking up, he noticed the Gryfindor looked rather tired. "Ready for an exciting lesson?" The Ravenclaw fourth year headed into the classroom.
"Good morning Juni," he said, smiling at the Ravenclaw as she moved to sit next to her friends. "Are you ready to make history I mean, er, study it?" Heh. He'd given a spoiler, sort of. Quote:

But irregardless, Curtains was definitely different and the sixth year wasn't used to it, but she was making do. "Morning, Professor," she smiled politely. Like, what was up with the 'ladies and gents'. Kind of weird. The snakette found herself making her way to a seat somewhere in the middle but closer to the back. "Well good morning Skylar!" the professor said, returning her polite smile with an inclination of the head. His lips were tired from all the smiling. And yep, he knew ladies and gentlemen was a hard thing to get used to for some of the students. None of the other professors used that greeting, but to Charles this was just more reason to keep using it! Quote:

She gave a quick nod to several of her fellow classmates before taking a seat near Ronan. "Hey Ronan," she greeted as she settled her things on the desk before taking a seat. After their experience last year near the bulletin board and the recent reappearances of this image, Vi wondered what he thought of it all. She leaned a little over towards him. "Did you see the hawk?" she asked quietly.
Blue eyes widened as she saw the pieces of parchment on the table. Intriguing. "By Order of...." Dolores Umbridge and her many decrees? Was that what they were going to be studying perhaps? "Good moorning Vi!" he said, inclining his head politely to her as she moved to sit. "I am having a fantastic day. And it's only just beginning!" Quote:

At her desk, she stared at the desk's contents. Decrees, huh... Kye could only imagine what fun facts about decrees of years past they'd be discussing. She was busy grumbling to herself, ready to have a full conversation with her growling stomach any minute now when a conversation peaked her interest.
... What was that about a hawk?? "Good morning Valkyrie!" he said brightly as the sixth year Slytherin with the very cool name moved to sit down. Valkyrie. He liked the way that name sounded. Quote:

"Well hello Zita!" he said cheerfully, eyebrows raising in amusement as she wiggled her finger at him. "Find a seat and make yourself comfortable! We're about to make history." What was this order stuff about by the way? Were they gonna write essays? 'Cause Zoryn was all out of skiving snackbox excuses. "Well hello! How is my favorite castle painter today?" Heh. "Goood mooorning Stasya," the professor said cheerfully, rolling out his oooo's as he folded the essay he'd been writing inside a folder and placed it on his desk. "I am quite fine, thank you.
"Good morning Shera. How are you today?" the professor asked, smiling gently as he noticed she seemed a bit distracted...and nervous? Come to think, Ronan seemed the same way, as did several of the others. Understandable, considering everything that had been happening recently. It was rather perplexing. Hopefully this lesson would serve as a distraction until the staff figured out what was going on. Was it just her or were some people looking a bit less than their best? Like that Gryffindor boy that passed out in potions, Ronan, he looked a bit rough. She gave him a sympathetic smile and then flicked through the 'order of' papers. Hmmmm. "Good morning Bel, how are you?" he said, smiling as she moved to sit and examine her papers. Soon enough they would find out what they were for. He hadn't even told his fellow teachers what this lesson was about, so this would come as a surprise to THEM too. Quote:

"Good morning young Ace," he said cheerfully as the head boy came in and found a seat, looking for all the world like he'd been running. Charles admired that he had so much energy for so early in the morning. Quote:

Besides ushering the students away from the scenes and assuring them "everything would be fine".......there was nothing else.....and now they would likely have to sit through some overly expressive bugger for another term.
Merlin help her if anymore talks on the statute got brought up for class discussions, the Ravenclaw would likely lose it.
Not being in the best of moods, Jessa merely mumbled her greeting to the quirky Professor as she went and took a seat with Bel. The girl got a nod of greeting before her eyes fell to the sheet of paper. She was already getting a bad feeling about this. "Good morning Jessa, how are you feeling today?" the professor asked the Ravenclaw with a small smile as another distracted looking one came in to sit. Surely she was thinking about that mysterious hawk, just like so many others were. He didn't blame her. He hoped this lesson would serve as an interesting distraction from the horrors these students had been through. Quote:

It was draining, worrying who hated you and who didn't. And then, to add insult to injury, those blood-drawing warning things were back - she'd passed one in the basement on the way up to her lesson, and a visible shudder had passed down her back. Trying to force her negative thoughts away, she dropped her back to the floor and sat down, not getting anything out of it due to the presence of a quill, ink and parchment already on the desk.
By order of who, exactly? "Good morning Felicity," the professor said, nodding with a small smile to the sixth year as she went to find her place. This one also seemed anxious. No doubt the events concerning the Hawk had something to do with it. Hopefully this lesson would take her mind off things. Quote:

But if that was the case, why hadn't he said just to bring parchment of their own? Nope, this looked far too official to be anything but stressful. "Well hello Night," Charles said, the edges of his lips twitching with amusement at her groan. "I like your enthusiasm. Please take a seat and make yourself comfortable."

He checked his watch as the last few students trickled in. They were running five minutes late, which was no big deal at all. Professor Curtains was pretty lax when it came to deadlines and strictness, as most of his students might have noticed by now. Kind of ironic, considering the lesson he had in store for them all today.
And speaking of which, he could tell they definitely needed a distraction. Many of them seemed downright nervous, and it could all be traced back to the bizarre things that had been happening these past two years, things which the staff were no closer to understanding now than they were when these events started. No wonder the students were scared. But hopefully this lesson would be engaging enough to temporarily distract them from all that. "Good morning class," he said, not even bothering to close the door to the classroom for this lesson. He stood up from his chair and began slowly pacing back and forth across the room. "You each have a sheet of paper and a quill with ink provided. You don't need to use the quill if you prefer to use your own writing material. The quill is symbolic, and you'll know what I mean in a minute."
He came to a halt at his desk and leaned back into it. "But before that, I want to talk to you about a former staff member at Hogwarts, a staff member who went on to become headmistress, later disgraced. Dolores Jane Umbridge. So my first question to you all is: Who was Dolores Jane Umbridge? You are free to mention any detail about her of her reign of terror here at Hogwarts that you want. One at a time please." OOC: Sorry I'm a little in responding. If you too are late you can still pretend you were here all along! Class will commence in approximately 24 hours!

Boring, but at least it wasn't generally hard. Not like Astronomy could be at least. Besides, the professor was pretty chill, much like the previous one had been. Isabel had liked Professor Marchand and was sad to see her go, though she had nothing against Professor Curtains.
And the irony of a lax teacher talking about one who had been a dictator. HA!
Isabel raised her hand. "She was a bureaucrat who worked for the Ministry of Magic. I believe that she was Senior Undersecretary to the Minister of Magic. She was a loathsome bigot and spent some time as the Headmistress at Hogwarts before getting what was coming to her. She was incredibly cruel, obsessed with rules and order, and was incredibly prejudiced." Honestly she deserved worse. But yeah, she wasn't going to get into it more. Was it obvious that she hated Delores Umbridge? That woman was basically a psychopath. |

Hogwarts RPG Name: Daehyun "Daniel" Yoon Third Year | So they were indeed charmed.
... Hogwarts had taught him to expect the unexpected quite early.
As the class started, Daehyun's eyes narrowed a bit as soon as he'd heard the name Dolores Jane Umbridge. Of course he'd read all about her, so he already guessed today's lesson would put him in a sour mood. His hand in the air, he said more like grumbled, "She was a great example of what not to do as a professor and headmaster." And he would leave it at that.
His eyes darted back to the piece of paper in front of him, suddenly glaring at it.
He really wasn't excited about the topic they would discuss. |
