Default Potions Lesson #1

The normal greenish glow of the dungeons seem to glow a bit brighter today as if it was reflecting some of the sunlight from outside somehow. The classroom is a comfortable even for the September weather. The workstations are sat up in their normal way four people per table, not that it was relevant to the lesson today. Labs coats, were hanging right as you walk in, if you wanted one they were there. On workstation was a parchment, quill, and two vitals one has a clear liquid and the other has a white sandy dust substance in the other. They will find out what was in them soon enough.

Professor Canterbury had the doors wide open. Standing near the door slipped on her own lab coat and walked around the classroom. Checking to see it was all ready to go and that each spot had what was needed for the lesson. She moved back behind her desk and to took a seat as she waited for the students to come in. Come right on in and take a seat the lesson be being getting started

Lesson progression:
Greeting and Question
Responses and Experiment
Stuff here and Question
Answers and Invisibility Potion

OOC: Please make sure you're familiar with Professor Canterbury’s rules as well as the SS site rules before posting. Please remember this IC this is not the first lesson of the term. Class will continue in a little over 24 hours time (May 6 around 9am EST) Thanks for coming! Class has officially started so please keep the chatting to a minimum. If you haven't posted your charrie in here and want to, please feel free to jump right in and pretend as though they've been here the entire time.

Henry had to admit to himself that it probably was a good idea that he wasn't sitting with some of his closest friends or his girlfriend in class today because this was one class that demanded his full attention to be even remotely successful. And let's face it, he'd be very distracted by sitting with any one of them. But it did not go unnoticed that they sat elsewhere, though he gave them all waves and smiles as they came in, plus a finger wiggle for one specific person.

And you know what else was distracting? Derfael Ashburry-Hawthorne. Henry happened to notice him and one of his tablemates just as they decided to ingest the contents of the vials in front of them. It was actually kind of shocking that the younger Hufflepuff would do something so reckless when wasn't it him who was so adamant about not eating any of the actual food that professors were offering to students in classes last term? He wasn't sure why unknown substances were better and he opened his mouth to say something, plus had a bezoar from his kit handy, just in case. He did feel like it was something of his job to look out for the younger badger. But the professor took care of things before he needed to intervene. Luckily it apparently hadn't been anything poisonous. Still, he'd be keeping an eye on the boy and he gave him the two-finger eye-to-eye gesture, though he did follow it with a little wink because he wasn't stern, just wanted him to know he was looking out for him.

And now that class was officially beginning, Henry tried once more to focus. He never cared much for the theory bits of really any class, so he didn't have much to offer there if he just didn't know. His eyes fell on the parchment and quill sitting in front of him and he wondered if that was put there by the professor for his note taking, or if it was for something else that would be revealed during the lesson. Because he did have his own note taking supplies and he got those out as he heard what the subject of the day would be - Invisibility potion. He started writing the title, but held off writing anything else just yet. At this point they were all just guesses from his classmates and he'd just wait till the professor actually confirmed things.

As for himself, Henry really didn't have any guesses. There were already good ones stated - something from a demiguise or thestral perhaps, or even a chameleon. But using parts of creatures that could not be freely given, like bones or blood... Henry wasn't sure how he felt about that.

"Maybe boomslang skin? That's used in Polyjuice potion to shed your outer skin," Aurora added to the other students' answers. "Or occamy eggs - they're silver and reflective, like a mirror, so they could mirror the world around you, making you seem to disappear."

Lorelei quietly slipped into the Potions classroom, hoping that she hadn't missed much, as she knew she couldn't afford to do that. She smiled at the professor before sitting in an empty seat near the back of the room, then hurried to take parchment, ink, and textbook out of her schoolbag.

"Sorry." she apologized, feeling her face grow red. "I got lost."

Lorelei situated herself to where she was comfortable, then looked expectantly up at the teacher.

A potion for invisibility? Sam fiddled with her quill as thought about it. It really depended on the type of invisibility desired, did it not? Because she wasn't convinced that true invisibility existed, other than in story books and the Deathly Hallows. The thestral related suggestions proved that point to her, since she'd seen them every year she'd been at Hogwarts; it'd been mind-bending to know that others couldn't. Beautiful, majestic beings thestrals were, but invisibility didn't have to be any of those things. She'd grown up as a street kid, and there you were quick to master the art of hiding in plain sight. And some people just shied away from attention, almost instinctively.

Or maybe that was more disillusionment than invisibility? Either way, she reckoned part of the trick to becoming invisible was something too obvious to miss.

Of course, the question was what.

And then it came to her. What gave visibility? "Eyes, Professor? Beetle eyes seem kinda rudiment'ry for a potion for invisibility, so I'd opt for newt or even plimpy if I 'ad to make a guess. Eyes are what give sight, so I figure just like an anitdote sometimes need some of the poison, invisibility would require eyes."

"Two million. Obviously," Katy whispered to Oliver with a tiny grin, but then class was starting and she had to focus on that. On the professor, and on the invisibility potion sitting on her desk top. Was that what it was? She jotted a few notes on her parchment regarding the color, transparency, and consistency of the potion. And someone had boldly gone and tasted it already? Bold babies. What if it had been a poison?

Ingredients? Demiguise was a good guess, if an obvious one, although she would have gone with tincture of demiguise over random harvested body parts. But what else? "What about eyes, Professor? I would think that if the point is not to be visible to the eye, then making use of the magical properties of the eye of a magical creature..." She shrugged. It would depend on the creature, on the eye.

SUMMER FOREVER

Etta looked up as Noelle joined her at the table. "Hey." She replied with a grin and shifted a little to make room for her. And soon enough, the Slytherin prefect joined them foo. What was his name again? Olly, right? "Hi, Olly." She greeted politely with another smile. .... and wow. The cute baby Gryffindor sat at their table too. Stasya. "Hi, Stasya. I'm Etta." She introduced herself, unsure if she knew her name. "Nice to meet you."

--- And as for the professor's question, Etta didn't really have an answer to offer. Everyone seemed to have guessed already and she didn't have anything new to come up with. The Prefect instead thought about the answers given by her fellow students, occasionally taking notes and waiting for the class to move on.

What sort of ingredients to make invisibility potion? Kirk would have added in invisible ingredients, but that was a bit too obvious, now wouldn't it be? He casually leaned back in his chair listening to the others responses.

He took a moment to consider the options, it was a challenge to choose one not already mentioned before raising his hand. "Sparkily clean water specifically I would think. If the potion is meant to make one invisible it would be fitting to keep it as clear as possible. Plus clean water is very good for us to keep our insides clear and fine."

Emmeline grinned at Derf as he told her he was okay; the whole thing seemed very funny now that she knew the ingredients weren't toxic. She supposed the Ravenclaw girl would normally be correct, that a professor wouldn't give them anything dangerous, but didn't she realize how many hags and Merlin-knew-what else taught here?! That was the only reason Emmeline would really question a grown up; before Derf had told her that, she would have believed only the best of Hogwarts teachers -- they must be very impressive to get jobs at Hogwarts!

Glancing at her tablemates, she noticed something that made her face flush with embarrassment -- Abey looked upset! She was sure that this was at least half-way her fault, because nobody else in the room had panicked when the other kids tasted the ingredients. "I'm sorry I freaked out like that," she told him softly enough that only her tablemates could hear her. She tried to make it sound like normal conversation, because she knew from experience with her big brother and his friends that boys did NOT like it if girls noticed they were upset.

Emmeline smiled as Theo made his comment about them being the most awesome second years. "I bet!"

Now the professor was talking, so Emmeline was quick to stop. She was very disturbed by some of her classmates' answers. Most of them didn't seem to have a problem with things like eyes or skulls being used, but what about the creatures?! Didn't they care at all? She had just been changing her opinion of the professor to be positive because the lady hadn't taken points off Derf and the Ravenclaw (not to mention they were finally making a potion that did something cool), but if this stuff did turn out to be Demiguise skull or something... She couldn't help a little shudder of revulsion when she heard things like that.

As for her own answer, she thought that people thinking of Demiguises were probably right. And since this liquid was clear: "Is Demiguise spit involved?" She shot a small smile at Derf and the Ravenclaw girl again, because that would mean the girl had drunk spit. Gross!

Class had started, so Stasya had decided it was better to just return Noelle’s and Etta’s greetings with a smile. She wasn’t about to worry about getting in trouble for talking when it wasn’t class related, at least not for something as little as saying hi when a smile worked just as well. Plus she’d smiled at Olly too for good measure, even as she’d seen Derf and Jessa sampling from the vials on their tables. That was different. That made her start to worry that her friends were going to end up poisoned, and she’d turned wide eyes on the professor as she had reprimanded the two at the other table. Okay, so probably they weren’t going to die from whatever the two things were, but it definitely made her second-guess any thoughts about testing things left on their desks in classes.

Not only that, but she squirmed a little at a lot of the suggestions the other students were making in response to the question. Of course, she agreed with the possibility that demiguises were useful in invisibility, along with chameleons and the other creatures that could blend in with their surroundings. But she’d much rather not know that creatures had actually been hurt just to make a potion. She’d rather not actually have to make a potion that used stuff like that.

HOLISTIC ACTRESS {X O} EVERYTHING IS CONNECTED

Melbourne had been sitting quietly in her seat after saying an almost inaudible greeting to Professor Canterbury when she had entered the room. Her lab coat and protective gear were either on or securely attached to her head and for now, she was listening to what everyone was saying in response to Professor Canterbury’s questions.

What would be in an invisibility potion?

Raising her hand Melbourne was about to answer Water when she heard Kirk mention it. The Ravenclaw boy got a small chin nod in return because really – that was a smart idea. Still hand raised she added, ”As Kirk mentioned I do believe water would be an integral part of the potion…however we could go on a scientific level and also say oxygen? Which would likely be used in a liquid form or another solid form of Oxygen” Melbourne offered with a small smile because really wouldn’t that be a great thing to use in a potion? Oxygen.

Everyone seemed to have such educated guesses and here Faith was, blonde and clueless as ever. Fidgeting with the ends of her hair and musing about needing a haircut soon, she eventually did decide to take notes on what people thought was plausible and why, trying to get her brain to do something along that vein. Occamy eggs and eyes being her current favourite. Until something occurred to her.

"How about Portuguese Man of War skin? Those lie on beaches and are mostly see through and rarely noticed but super lethal. I think I read about someone being paralysed by them." Nodnodnod. "Or ghost mushrooms." Mostly because she saw those in her mum's potions kit and never got around to asking what they were for, so two birds with one stone here.

Noooooooot that they should be throwing stones at birds because they scare easy. That wasn't very nice.

Sorry, Rooney-love. Truly. Had Olivia known that he'd wanted her to sit with him, perhaps she might have, but... psh. With her poor temperament and hormones, the entire world was simply against her today. No, that made ZERO sense...in the name of logic and reason, but then again... This Lionlady was a teenage girl who was properly messy and downright stupid at times. Logic rarely held any sway here.

...And there wasn't anything special about the parchment pieces. That genuinely disappointed the blonde, as she flipped the blank page over on the workstation surface. Perhaps Professor Gaston could do something with the Aparecium! spell in Charms, given that it was a Charms spell... Ugh, she wanted to see more spells utilized in their everyday learning. Excessive, sure, but an adventure...and never boring. She was suffering here (with her cramps and icky stomach)! By gosh, let the suffering be entertaining and insightful. To pass the time, she began picking the phials up, bringing each to eye-level. The one clear liquid could've been plain water, for all she could tell. There didn't appear to be anything special about it to the naked eye. The dust, however... That could've been something ground up into a fine dust... But what... Surely not demiguise hair, as had been suggested. Perhaps anything part of the demiguise. Teeth? Nails?....Bones? Seriously, it had better not have been the latter. Olivia didn't condone that level of cruelty... but..she didn't think that was it, anyway.

Refocusing on her classmates, she caught the rear of what Levi Kenning had suggested and nodded silently in agreement with his reasoning. Even little Emmeline's question about demiguise spit was a good guess! Liv gave her a kind look... One of the only ones she felt she had in her at the moment.

"I'm going to say ground up Demiguise teeth or nails. I doubt this sandy substance came from hair." Just putting that out there. Though, that wasn't to say that a hair or two couldn't be added to the potion... Those things just weren't present in these two phials.....unless...they were INVISIBLE...AND IN WATER... Her blue eyes shifted back towards the one phial with the clear substance........ Nah. Those two kids had just drank it, apparently... Derf and Derf's friend, Jessa... Brave ickles. They weren't hacking on hairs tickling their throats...

Her gaze caught the blank parchment, again. She was STILL disappointed about the lack of charmed notes. Ah, well.

Wanting to keep her hands busy, because they were trembling from the amount of pain she was in, Liv jotted down the the suggested ingredients from around the potions' lab. Everyone had had interesting suggestions and theories, and truly, nothing would've surprised her at this point. Sooo.

Waves and smiles were given to friends and acquaintances alike as the boy strolled to join Kettleburn at her workstation of choice. He dropped his messenger bag, pushed up his glasses and shrugged into the lab coat. He smiled his house mate but his attention was largely focused on the vials and...powder?

Okay. He blinked.

"I was gonna tell you something but I can't remember what it was anymore." Probably hadn't been important, then. Hopefully. He smiled, took out his self-inking quill and journal. "Anyway--Hiya, Kettleburn."

Demiguise hair did seem like a good guess, too, though. He raised his hand. "What about chameleon's blood?" For obvious reasons, of course. "All potions wear off eventually," He explained, tapping his chin with his quill. Levi pushed up his glasses. "So, in the end, it could perhaps help the drinker maintain not the invisibility, but certainly the ability to blend in with the background the way an average disillusionment charm might." Long enough to at least give the person plenty of time to get out before being spotted.

Not that invisibility potions were only exclusive for potentially secret, sneaky, maybe illegal endeavors. But.

Char's mouth was open, ready to greet Levi and try to jog his memory because now she was V. CURIOUS about what he had meant to tell her, but then class was beginning and she had to focus.

Like really focus. And the question had her blinking because she DID NOT KNOW, okay? And people were throwing out answers of all sorts, some that were probably right, done that might have been complete stabs in the dark with only the most tenuous connections but to be honest Char wouldn't have been able to pick between them at ALL. She gaped for another second then grabbed her book and started flipping through it for ideas. Every time she found something though, it was either offered as an answer or she realised it was dumb. Nguhhh. Why did professors always expect you to know things before the lesson had even started???

She stopped in her flipping when Levi answered -he was smart so she was glad he had sat by her- and then redoubled her efforts to find something she could give as an answer.

...... okay, her book said the potion (if it was even the right one?? what if there were dozens of variations like there were with some potions?) anyways her book said it was grey and bubbly. So working backwards, maybe something that would make it look or behave that way as a side effect?????

Ummmmmm..... maybe some kind of crushed up grey rock???

Orrr.... stab in the dark time, she put her hand up. "Soda water professor? Ummm that would make it bubbly and also, the gas in the bubbles is invisible even though we know it's there!" There! A justification!

Ahem.

Maybe she would even somehow be right, that would be funny. And awesome. And so super unlikely.

Ava spoke up as she put her hand in the air.

”Very good Miss Burton, flooberworm mucus, changes the consistency to thicken up potions, but it is not an ingredient for this.” She was impressed by the girls knowledge of ingredients.

SPOILER!!: Derf and Jessa

He still wasn't sure what it was he had just ingested, and he was watching Jessa rather curiously as well, but his thoughts were interrupted when the professor took note of what they were doing. And his eyes went WIDE like a mooncalf's. "Would you really put s-s-something harmful in front of us-s-s with no warning?!" he squeaked - although a bit excited as well. The second year's brain worked in mysterious ways you see.

But that really only made him MORE curious as to what exactly these two things were...and she didn't seem all THAT concerned that they had just tasted it....

Also, professor, he DID know what he was doing and was quite aware of it. She need not worry about that!

Regardless...his attention was on the vials as she asked her question, arms folded on the table and chin resting on the back of his hands. "I reckon whatever you put in thes-s-se," he said after a moment of thinking - because demiguise hair was the first thing that popped to his mind as well - pointing to the vials. Particularly the vial of clear liquid that Jessa had drank from when he was struck with an idea. "Demiguise s-secretions? Like like...their tears - but that would be really catching one JUST to make it cry for a potion that does-s-s s-something s-s-similiar to what a cloak made from their fur can do.... or...." He paused for a moment and considered the lack of smell of sorts when he had taken a whiff. Then again...they were invisible creatures and if their urine had a strong odor that would give away their location so it only made sense that a demiguise had evolved to have an odorless pee. "...or demiguise pee?" He looked at Jessa. "Maybe you just drank demiguise pee."

Tasting was the most appealing option, and the girl nodded along as Derf assured his friend that they were fine. So far she felt perfectly fine. Nothing amiss. All good...which was somewhat disappointing but not everything could be a great discovery she supposed.

"I'm sorry if we've given you a fright, Professor." To be very clear, she was never sorry for experimenting, but she was sorry for the negative effect it may have had on those around her. "The lack of warning made us think there couldn't have been anything too wrong with it." It wasn't that they weren't thinking safety, in fact they'd thought it through clearly. No signs meant not dangerous. She turned then to Derf. "Don't be silly, the Professor wouldn't put something dangerous before us and leave no warnings." This line of reasoning was exactly why she'd gone ahead to have a taste. If it WAS dangerous, surely they would have been told the moment they got there.

"Cherries, Professor." Jessa offered, somewhat distracted--completely distracted by her bestfriend's suggestion. "You think so????" Blue eyes flashed back to the Professor. "Was it really pee, Professor? Do you store vials and vials of it? I mean it makes sense I suppose but...." How very odd. How did she feel about demiguise pee. The jury was still out on this one.

"But then, what did YOU eat??? You don't think it's the powered BONES of the demiguise, do you????" Merlin, this poor creature never stood a chance. Sounded like they were using all of him.

The potions professor kept her gaze on the two of them. What were kids thinking? ”No, of course not. No Professor would intentionally harm a student or give them something that would cause harm. You really should never taste test any ingredient until you know what it is. Individually they are harmless but if you mix them together, I’m sure Healer Reed would be busy for days tending to you both.” She eyed both of them.

”Do you understand? Know what you are consuming before you to taste test it.” Honestly if she wanted them to taste test it she would have indicated so. Maybe she needed to start handing out candy to keep their mouths busy, allowing them to talk before lessons started wasn’t enough of a distraction.

So they understood now right? Okay. So now to their answers. ” Yes, Something from a demiguise is used in this potion.” But what? Derf was onto something…. ”Yes, Miss Cambridge Cherries is an ingredient used in this potion.” She smiled at both of them, good job.

She continued to watch them and listen into on their conversation. ”I can assure you both that either vial contains demiguise bone or urine.” Now if they would get some patience they would soon learn what was actually in the vials.

Demiguise hair would've been her guess, though that creature seemed the obvious choice because of its abilities. She was also considering the Thestral, though she was fairly certain getting your hands on Thestral hair was dangerous business. That left her with one other guess. "Perhaps you could use octopus powder, Professor. It's said to strengthen potions, and I imagine you'd want an invisibility potion to work well, considering you'd be using it to keep you from being seen." Which sort of implied whatever you were doing after taking it might not be on the up-and-up. Or might be dangerous. Or could be frowned on. ...Or Junia just tended to think negatively these days.

”That is correct Miss Botros, Octopus powder does strengthen potions, but it is not an ingredient.” She nodded at that fourth year encouragingly. She knew her stuff too.

SPOILER!!: Abey

Nodding was happening. He and Théo were remarkably different in height, with Abey being a good four inches taller by now, but, actually, they were the same year. And, actually, Théo was actually the older of the two, but that wasn't what Emmeline had asked about so all that stuff remained unsaid.

Abey had been about to return the question, all in the name of polite conversation, seeing as class hadn't started yet and they seemed to have a few minutes before they needed to pay attention, but he too had caught sight of Derf and his other friend tasting the stuff in the vials.

Though he sat watching them for a moment, it didn't really immediately register to Abey that what they were doing might be dangerous, not until the Emmeline girl reacted to it. But Abey couldn't say anything, he only sort of watched and stared and tried to listen to the thoughts that told him the Hogwarts staff wouldn't put them in danger, and ignore the ones that tried to remind him that Hogwarts sometimes wasn't exactly a very safe place at all actually and that he knew this first hand.

The anxious niggling in his chest had started to turn into more of an awful wrenching-and-slamming sensation inside his ribcage, which Abey knew to be his own frantic heartbeat. He watched worriedly, his anxiety only fuelled by the expressions of other students in the class, but... it all turned out to be okay... didn't it?

Still... that didn't slow his heart down one bit. Abey kept his eyes on Derf, even when the professor kicked off the class with a question about... something? Ingredients for a... demiguise potion? ... No, that didn't make sense. But also actually Abey didn't care about that right now. For another minute or so, he kept his eyes fixed on his villain, because he had that feeling again, that feeling like something bad was going to happen, and it was, actually, really really scary actually.

When it was really quite clear that nothing bad was happening to Derf, Abey finally dragged his gaze away, and glanced up at the professor. He still wasn't really sure about an answer... at all... and he didn't want to repeat what someone else had said so, he mumbled the one thing that seemed to show up in most of the potions they brewed.

"Water."

Nice and quietly, and no hand in the air, so that he could deny he'd said anything if it turned out to be wrong.

What is was that? Ciara could barely hear young Mister Botros. ”Was that water you said, Mister Botros? You are correct, water is ingredient in the invisibility potion. As is it in most potions?” Mister Botros also got an encouraging smile from her.

SPOILER!!: Mr. Salander
"Hey there cuz!" the Curly Top greeted Sammy as she joined them. The vials? "I dunno... theres a liquid and theres a solid and for all we know this could be the beginnings of soup or something." he grinned. His gaze fell on the block of cheese and then back to his cousin with a puzzled look. What was the cheese for again?

And now the class has started. INVISIBILITY potion?? They be making things invisible today? And as for this Jeopardy-esque round of discussions.... "Is there something that came from a Thestral Professor?"
[/QUOTE

Hmmmm…. A thestral? Someone would have to be able to see them to able able to collect ingredients. ”I’m afraid that something from a thestral is not an ingredient, but that was a good guess, considering they are invisible to most people.”

Shay raised her hand and waited to be called on. When her turn came, she began to speak. "Maybe you can use lacewing flies in an invisibility potion. I know that they are used for Polyjuice potion, to transform one person into another. Maybe it can help a person turn invisible too." Maybe?

Ciara had to say that Shay was on the right track she was kind of there but not quite. ”That’s a wonderful guess Miss Morrison, but not exactly” She give the sixth year a thumbs up for her guess.

Thinking about that, the fourth year almost missed the suggestion of demiguise pee by Derf, to which she had to cover her mouth to stifle her amusement. Sorry, she was kind of childish when it came to talk of pee and bodily functions.

Focus, Skylar, focus. She mentally scolded herself, as she tried to wrack her brain for something original that might be included in the invisibility potion. Water, was a given, and already mentioned. Demiguises and thestrals seemed to be good guesses, yet she didn't really know of many potions that had parts from either of those two creatures.

"Ground unicorn horn, Professor," Skylar said finally, raising her hand. "It's very useful and unicorns have quite majestic properties." So why shouldn't it help in invisibility? Made sense to her, at least.

She heard the Professor greet her and Zarina nodded her head and gave her a soft smile. "Good morning.." she replied back. Now it was time for the lesson. Straight to it huh? Zae heard the question about “What are some ingredients that you think is in an invisibly potion?" She repeated it in her head a few times and then began to think about it. She could think outside the box.

Invisibility potion eh? What ingredients could be in it? Zarina had no idea. She wasn't really a potions whiz. She could come up with a clever idea. Then she heard the unicorn hair aspect and she agreed with that. "I agree with the unicorn hair aspect.." she nodded towards her fellow slytherin.

Ciara had the admit she knew deep down inside that someone would mention unicorns. ”Yes, Unicorns are very useful in potions making, and have great magical properties, but no ingredients using any part of a unicorn is it the invisibility potion.”

Charles was not growing fast enough for his liking or him trying to figure out a way to learn partsletongue without being born with it wasn't happening yet either. He'd find a way though, yes he would.

Looking up when the professor started to talk Eddie got the glazed look in his eyes that was him half paying attention, but half not. The potion did seem interesting though and Eddie sat up a little bit and looked at what was in front of him. Could this make him invisible? The things he could do at this school if no one could see him. Professor,
professor what were you about the teach him. He kept the grin from his lips and kept his straight face showing.

The question was asked and he really had no clue nor did he care to try to look in his book. Instead he put his hand up and when he was called on answered with the first thing that came to his mind. "Nose hairs. They potion would need your nose hair to gather some DNA from you. That way when it put you invisible it could keep you together and not harm you in any way." There that was good, right?

Ciara watched this boy, he was awful quiet and distracted today. ”Good guess but I’m not sure how nose hairs would protect you.” Though he could be onto something, nose hairs keeping you save. Sounds like something that could be looked into. She nodded to the second year. ”Thank you for you input, Mister Blaze.”

By that time, he was at his workstation and ready to go.

Okay, so...first question of the lesson, and it required him to really think. Not that he was against thinking at all, but seeing as he'd just rushed into class at the last second, his brain wasn't ready at all. Invisibility Potion...Invisibility Potion... His mind wandered as he tried to think of invisible things, or things that reminded him of invisibility.

He raised his hand. "There's an old saying called 'blind as a bat', so maybe we can use ingredients that come from a bat, like bat's spleen," he said. It sounded really, really disgusting, but weren't most potions ingredients that way? Besides, he knew bat's spleens were used in potions, because they were also ingredients in the Draught of Living Death.

Someone was lucky that they had gotten to class right on time, really. On the dot on time. She also remembered the older Westwood from when they were at Ilvermorny. [b]”I’m familiar with that saying, Mister Westwood. That was a good guess, thinking outside the box and the logic, but no bats’ spleens in this potion though.

Make it pop like pink confetti allllllllllll over his love. Ah.

He was already fond of this Professor. Good call, Professor Canterbury. Amazing call. Rooney may have been considering applauding for her, but figured it wholly unnecessary for now. He'd just smile and nod his approval. Yes yes. Much approved. Stamp of approval from the Head Boy. Did everyone in here know that he was Head Boy? He wished that there had been an announcement at the start of term feast like there was for new Professors. He was like one step below Professors now.

Roo didn't give an answer, but instead noted down all the answers that everyone else gave and added a tally if they were mentioned twice. He ooohed and nodded at the answer about a chameleon, completely agreeing with the logic of that one.

She frowned at the silent ones. Shy? Bored? Tired? Who knew. Maybe the answer they wanted to say was said already? She knew they knew how to talk. So that wasn’t it. And they had plenty to say. Hopefully however she hoped that they would be able to offer more to the lesson, as it progressed or at least enjoyed it.

Thought the logic in thinking about eyes make a lot of since to her, in the thinking. ”Not for this potion, eyes are not an ingredient. But the logic behind your guess. Good guess."

Getting specific with the type of water? She really liked this answer. ”Water is ingredient, in most potions though, the water that you can produce from your want using the Aguamenti charm, works just fine.” The one of the water people added in Oxygen, ”I suppose, Oxygen is in potions, but it’s not an ingredient.” Miss Kettleburn added soda water. ”Miss Kettlburn, I like that answer, it was a very thought out,” That’s what she like to hear, outside of the box.

Demiguise hair did seem like a good guess, too, though. He raised his hand. "What about chameleon's blood?" For obvious reasons, of course. "All potions wear off eventually," He explained, tapping his chin with his quill. Levi pushed up his glasses. Out of habit, her eyes found their way to clock, sighing softly as her mind wandered back to her family in England, and how they would be having her mom's famous cherry pie. All of a sudden Elora raised her hand, Professor, Would Cherries be an ingredient? I remember my mom telling me about cherries and potions when we made a cherry pie?" She titled her head as she asked the question.

”Yes, Cherries is an ingredient that is called for in this poton, very good.” What that just a lucky guess though? She couldn’t help but to wonder.

”Those are good guesses, but they are not the ingredients for today’s lesson.” Good guesses she like all of the guesses, the logic behind the guess. They might not be in this potion that they were doing today.

SPOILER!!: Daisy and Kim and the demiguise people
Daisy thought for a moment and raised her hand. Potions wasn't a strong subject but she wanted to at least have a try. "I think Demiguise hair might be an ingredient since the pelt is used in the making of invisibility cloaks."

"Oh," Hads smiled. Their new Professor used to be a student at Hogwarts too, apparently. "Well, then, welcome back." And then someone sat down next to her. One of her best friends; the one, the only... "Sizzling Salamander," Hadley said in greeting, trying hard to sound bored and slightly disappointed it was him, but failing to do so on account of the goofy grin.

She had just finished setting everything up with yet another person sat down, placing cheese down on the table. Okay... "Sammers." Hadley greeted. And oh, look, we're doing an invisibility potion, rather appropriate given she currently felt like she was under the effects of one. No worries. She let Ace and Sam catch up, and chat while she pondered the Professor's question.

Truth be told, Hads didn't really know anything about invisibility potions. Disillusionment charm? Yes. Potions to turn into animals? Yes. Invisibility potions? No. And then one of the new firstie's (Daisy) answer caught her attention. "Wait, they skin Demiguises to make invisibility cloaks?" That's horrible. Hads had always wanted her own invisibility cloak, but not anymore. Poor Demiguises.

Invisibility potion. Olly and her had been going to make that potion last year but their plans had fallen through with all the monster happenings. She couldnt remember the ingredients though since the two had merely glanced at the potion instead of making it.

Demiguise hair was a good thought for an ingredient to be in the potion though. Werent invisibility cloaks made of those? "Yeah, I agree with the demiguise hair."

Ugh.. More thinking.. because what had properties to turn one invisible.. There were thestrals but they weren't exactly invisible were they? Certain people could see them very easily so that didn't really work out either.

But maybe it wasn't something invisible. Maybe being asked to think outside the box was because whatever it was had to be more mundane and not invisible at all.

Sooo.

Gross!

Ciara blinkled, this girl was a first year? ” True Miss Swann, demiguise hair is used to make invisibility cloaks. But they will age and go opaque over time. However demiguise hair is not called for this potion, Mister Kovalainen But if you were make a substitution of Demiguise hair to the potion it will strengthen the effects ”

The professor turned at looked at the sixth year ravenclaw Miss Denaker . ”Demiguise hair is woven into cloaks, they are not skinned. That would be totally barbaric.” And impossible to do, she was not the CoMC professor but she was pretty sure that demiguise were hard to catch. Then the fifth year gryffindor, Miss Phillips, chimed in on the demiguise aspect of possible ingredients, ”That’s close, a really close guess. I don't think hair would be a sandy substance.” She said with small chuckle. She gave the gryffindor girl a encouraging smile.

As she expected demiguise to be a popular answer…. Miss Peale might have been the closest without being right on the money. ”Miss Peale, you are heading in the right direction,” She smiled widely at the girl.

She was thrilled by all the answers, all of them were good guesses, some closer than others but good. Now she really knew that they wouldn’t have much trouble with this lesson. ”Thank you, everyone your answers were incredible. With many potions there are other variations of ingredients and instructions” She was very proud of her students, good outside of the box thinkers.

”Tincture of demiguise, is liquid extracted from a demiguise, it is also the liquid in the vial in which you all have been curious about, in the other is pearl dust are two of the an ingredients in this invisibility potion in which we will be brewing today. When the two are combine it causes a reaction that burns.” She paused to give them enough time to catch up with notes and what have you. ”We will get to that in just a little bit. First off we are going to do a little experiment. In front of you, I gave each of you a piece of parchment, quill and two vitals.” She also had her set up, same as the students.

“Now I want each of you write down A little message or doodle on the parchment that I have given you, using the clear liquid as ink.” She wrote down her message quickly potions are fun “You are not going to be able to read your message until you sprinkle the pearl dust on your parchment.” Holding up the other vital with dusty sand looking substance inside it. She levitated the parchment so that the students could see. Then opened the vital and tosses some of the dust into the parchment. She kept it in the air until it all burned off completely. “Now I'm going to give you a few minutes to work on this.” And go.

OOC: Alright guys thanks again for sticking around with me and my first lesson. I'm not feeling to good and I have a busy today that I didn't know I was going to have until last minute. I'm giving you all 24-30/32 hours for this experiment. I'm here if questions arise. If you want to jump in and/or catch up feel free to do so. Have a great day everyone XD

Tincture of Demiguise... The leonine lad looked at the vials weirdly. "Is that code for Demiguise pee?.... spit?....snot?" he chuckled at his tablemates.

But they said they could write or doodle with it "Ohhhh... secret message time." he smirked as he grabbed the quill in front of him and dipped it into that mystery Demiguise extract. What to write what to write....aha! Nuninuninuninu....

Oh. Neither. The young girl didn't know whether she was disappointed or relieved. On the one hand, she hadn't just ingested urine but on the other hand, she and Derf were still nowhere near a conclusion as to what the items in the vials were. Still very frustrating.

The fact she was right about the cherries didn't surprise her. It hadn't been a guess when she'd offered it up, the Ravenclaw had taken the time to know at least some of the ingredients for each potion on the curriculum. It was a certainty that at one point or the other she would be needing them. This wasn't to say she could quote each potion's recipe ingredient for ingredient but rather that she had at least some idea of what went into them.

The 13 year old nodded along as the Professor tried to ensure they would never taste test again. If it bothered her so much, she and Derf would simply find a new way of finding out what the substances were--because waiting to be told was never the answer but at the same time she'd meant it when she apologized for giving her a fright.

Somewhere in the back of her mind, she was aware of the spectators who'd watched her and Derf have a go at the vials but they hadn't changed much.

And THAT was what was in these vials. Ah. She'd probably not have guessed but the explanation made it clear why the Professor had asked that she not mix the two earlier. Hearing they would be using these in the potion to come, the girl made a mental note to ask for a new vial to replace the one she'd contaminated by having a sip of but for noooooowwwwwwww....drawing with the apparently invisible ink.

Jessa tabbed her quill into the vial of tincture of demiguise then proceeded to make squiggles and swishes all over the parchment the Professor had provided. A line here...carry it over to heeerrree.....then down that way....."I'll give you three chances to guess what this is." The Ravenclaw held the seemingly blank parchment up to Derf once she was done, doubting he'd be able to guess right anyhow.

Olly stared at the two vials in front of him, glad for an answer on what was inside them. Pearl dust was a fairly normal ingredient. The other, though, was demiguise tincture? Liquid extracted from demiguise? Did that make it demiguise blood? It was clear, though. He supposed demiguise could have clear blood. Extraction sounded like a rather painful process but getting blood drawn was a fairly common thing to do, so if it was just blood then the process of retrieving it probably wouldn't hurt the demiguise, which was good. Olly knew there were always a few students who had reservations about how the ingredients were acquired.

Secret messages? That sounded neat. Olly opened the vial of clear liquid and dipped his quill in it. "I'll write a message for you if you write one for me," Olly said to Noelle. He bent over the parchment and began writing, occasionally dipping the quill in the vial to get the proper amount of the substitute ink. It was a little difficult, considering he couldn't see what he had written. When he was done he slid it across the table to Noelle. If she sprinkled the dust on it she would reveal a doodle of a lion and the words "Noelle Summers is the most wonderful person in the world."

Maxton scribbled furiously at his parchment, making sure he got everything Professor Canterbury said about invisibility potions down. Demiguise tincture and pearl dust... Interesting!

And now they got to write down secret messages. This lesson was turning out to be fun. Well, all learning was fun in Maxton's eyes but this was extra fun.

Maxxie dipped the tip of his quill in the clear liquid and wrote down the first thing that came to his mind... DAISY SMELLS. "Here you go," he said, pushing the parchment across the desk towards his older sister. "Sprinkle on the dust and see what I wrote!" Hehehe!

Tincture of demiguise? Aurora hadn't thought of that. Here she was on her first day and she'd gotten the first question wrong. But she had thought her answers were good guesses - would she get points for that?

Everyone around her seemed to know what to write. They were all writing or making marks of some kind; a few looked like they were straining to remember something. She tried not to giggle at that but a small squeak came out.

Maybe nobody heard it.

She sat and thought of things she could write. Potion ingredients? A potion recipe? Something the headmistress had said? Something her father had said? No, he really wasn't very bright.

Something... something...

She had it! She began to write using her quill and the liquid in the vial sitting on the table.

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

He had to admit that the two taste testers only getting a warning was not what he had expected. But then again it was the best approached towards the younger students (although , in his opinion a second and third year should know better but that was probably just him) Anyways when i realised nothing would happen to the two he turned his attention to listening to the rest of the students answers instead of providing one himself.

Another student caught his eye, he had missed her at first because she probably had entered really quietly but when the Professor addressed her he turned to look who it was. It was a shame that Ravenclaw lost points because of her tardiness but he couldn't blame her, he remembered getting lost when he had tried to use a short cut portrait one time and instead of going to the towers he ended up in the dungeons. Good times.

After most of the students had said their thing, Mason got out his trusted notebook labeled potions and scribbled down notes what the Professor was saying. Once he was done, he placed the book down and turned his eyes to look at one of the vials which contained liquid extract from a demiguise. Looking in front of him at the piece of parchment and quill and pulled it closer to him so that he could draw better. He dipped the quill in the clear liquid and began to draw a sun, complete with a smiley face and all because he had no clue on what to draw and it was the first thing that came up in his mind. Plus, everyone could draw a smiley faced sun. Although he had drawn on the piece of parchment, his beautiful artwork was , of course, not visible to the eye so he next grabbed the vital with pearl dust in it and dropped some on the parchment.

Derf and the Cambridge girl should've suffered some kind of consequence for that stunt as far as Junia was concerned. She glanced from them to Abey, her mind wandering. He wouldn't just try some random ingredient without knowing what it was, would he? Those were people he associated with, after all. It worried her. Most things did when it came to him, especially these days.

Shaking off her unease, the fourth year focused on the task at hand. She wasn't entirely sure what she was meant to write and nothing interesting came to mind as she stared at her parchment. She glanced around, wondering what her classmates had decided on. Hm.

In the end, she tipped the vial of tincture of demiguise just enough so that she could get the tip of the quill into the liquid. Then she carefully wrote down her message.

Family is what's most important.

There.

Secret messages? Did his father know about this? It could help the business hugely if they could do this, but who was he kidding they had to have already known this stuff. The Blaze business was something that had been running for generations.
They hadn't been caught because of stuff like this, right? Okay, so it was something he was going to have to ask his dad next time he was home.

Anyway, he had to write down a note, but what should he write. Dipping his quill in the clear liquid he thought a few more moments before putting the quill to the paper and let it slide around smoothly writing his words.

Edward Jay Blaze Jr. will be the next ruler of the Wizards

Now that was an awesome message. One that he would figure out how to do one day.
He didn't want to be the minister that was just part of the wizards, he wanted to be Lord Blaze!

Well, whoever had said something about demiguises was right. But he was surprised that she didn't say he was wrong. so something being invisible was part of it. Though probably was a demiguise and yep. She was talking about them.

Oh, they had stuff in front of them. Théo did not even notice. Uh okay, and he was supposed to write something. "So a secret message" Anything was ...Okay

Will this really work

Then he looked to Abey and Emmeline and asked

"So either of you want to sprinkle the pearl dust on my message?"

Abey? Was still staring right at Derf actually. For reasons. Very important reasons. Derf reasons. Because... well... because they were in Potions, after all. So intense was Abey's stare, that he didn't even sense Junia's eyes on him from very close by.

"Huh?" he said, and was suddenly drawn out of his own musings by the voice of Emmeline, from quite close by. He blinked and looked at her, took a second to realise exactly why she was apologising to him, then managed another shy little smile before lowering his voice to murmur back. "Oh... it's okay. No need to apologise. Not your fault, actually." He meant it too, but it was a little bit tricky to try and explain just why he was so jumpy, not while they were meant to be... Potioning... or something.

So... water was an ingredient actually. Good. It was especially good that Abey's answer hadn't been wrong, considering that the professor had noticed him saying it. He returned her smile with a hesitant one on his own, and then... pretended to write down some notes in order to have an excuse to look away again. His parchment, however, remained blank, and his ill hadn't even actually touched the ink pot yet actually.

After that, Abey just fiddled with his quill while the other answers were given and addressed, and tried his very best not to get distracted by anything else, except... well, except that he did. He always did. It was ever so easy for his mind to wander when he wasn't focused on actually writing things down, after all.

When Professor What's-Her-Name announced the first little activity - in which he could draw and didn't need to worry about writing, thank Merlin - Abey looked back to the front of the room again. Huh. A doodle, but without being able to see what he was doing? It would probably look all strange and wrong, but at least everyone else would have the same issue.

Also, what was a tincture? Abey had never heard that word before. Was it a something that would make his villain upset? He glanced in said villain's direction even as he loaded up his quill with the clear liquid.

........ And... paused... because he couldn't think of what to draw. Nothing at all was coming to mind; he was drawing a complete blank. Eventually, Abey gave up on any sort of inspiration or creativity, and doodled a simple spiral shape. He had the belated idea to turn it into a streeler, but of course by that point he had forgotten where exactly on the parchment the entire doodle was. Oops.

As an afterthought, Abey added two letters to the parchment as well. A. B.

Or... well... he assumed that he had added them.

Looking up at Théo, Abey was ABOUT to claim that offer for himself, but then of course he remembered that actually there was a better way of doing it.

"Let's all swap so we each have someone else's," he suggested, looking between Théo and Emmeline. "Théo, you take mine... then Emmeline, you can take Théo's, and I'll take yours." Just bECAUSE Théo was more used to Abey's writing so if he'd somehow managed to completely just mess up two letters, he knew his second year friend wouldn't go on about it. Not that he expected Emmeline too - she seemed really lovely - but even so. He was a little insecure about the entire matter. "Would that be okay?" Abey hoped so, because he was already pushing his parchment towards Théo.

SUMMER FOREVER

Etta noted down what the professor said when she finally mentioned the contents of the vials on their table. Hmm, interesting. Tincture of Demiguise.. she wasn't exactly sure what that meant, though. But.. nope. She didn't want to think too much about it anyway.

She carefully dipped her quill in the clear liquid and paused. What did she want to write? She absently stared at the parchment in front of her for a few seconds before she finally wrote down the message neatly.

Life is beautiful.

Alright, done. Etta set her quill down and waited for further instructions.
