Derf was in the middle of sampling the sandy stuff again when he heard Emmeline, naturally turning towards her with a bit of a confident grin on his face. "Perfectly!" he assured. He hadn't sprouted antlers or boils or anything yet...so that was something at least. Or was it yet to come?

He still wasn't sure what it was he had just ingested, and he was watching Jessa rather curiously as well, but his thoughts were interrupted when the professor took note of what they were doing. And his eyes went WIDE like a mooncalf's. "Would you really put s-s-something harmful in front of us-s-s with no warning?!" he squeaked - although a bit excited as well. The second year's brain worked in mysterious ways you see.

But that really only made him MORE curious as to what exactly these two things were...and she didn't seem all THAT concerned that they had just tasted it....

Also, professor, he DID know what he was doing and was quite aware of it. She need not worry about that!

Regardless...his attention was on the vials as she asked her question, arms folded on the table and chin resting on the back of his hands. "I reckon whatever you put in thes-s-se," he said after a moment of thinking - because demiguise hair was the first thing that popped to his mind as well - pointing to the vials. Particularly the vial of clear liquid that Jessa had drank from when he was struck with an idea. "Demiguise s-secretions? Like like...their tears - but that would be really catching one JUST to make it cry for a potion that does-s-s s-something s-s-similiar to what a cloak made from their fur can do.... or...." He paused for a moment and considered the lack of smell of sorts when he had taken a whiff. Then again...they were invisible creatures and if their urine had a strong odor that would give away their location so it only made sense that a demiguise had evolved to have an odorless pee. "...or demiguise pee?" He looked at Jessa. "Maybe you just drank demiguise pee."

Kimi listened to the professor and thought what would be used in an invisibility potion and he raised his hand and said "Well you would need a hair from a demiguise" Kimi wasn't sure if that was correct but it was worth trying

"Thank you, Professor." Any and all compliments on her hair were very much appreciated and earned the woman points in this Slytherin's opinion. She clearly had good taste.

Demiguise hair would've been her guess, though that creature seemed the obvious choice because of its abilities. She was also considering the Thestral, though she was fairly certain getting your hands on Thestral hair was dangerous business. That left her with one other guess. "Perhaps you could use octopus powder, Professor. It's said to strengthen potions, and I imagine you'd want an invisibility potion to work well, considering you'd be using it to keep you from being seen." Which sort of implied whatever you were doing after taking it might not be on the up-and-up. Or might be dangerous. Or could be frowned on. ...Or Junia just tended to think negatively these days.

Jessa had caught the look on Mason's face and the alarm in that Emmeline girl's voice but neither left her particularly frazzled. In the pursuit of knowledge, sacrifices had to be made. Jessa wasn't the type to trick unsuspecting Firsties into trying things out for her, nor was she the type to necessarily be satisfied with simply being TOLD what something was or did. Tasting was the most appealing option, and the girl nodded along as Derf assured his friend that they were fine. So far she felt perfectly fine. Nothing amiss. All good...which was somewhat disappointing but not everything could be a great discovery she supposed.

"I'm sorry if we've given you a fright, Professor." To be very clear, she was never sorry for experimenting, but she was sorry for the negative effect it may have had on those around her. "The lack of warning made us think there couldn't have been anything too wrong with it." It wasn't that they weren't thinking safety, in fact they'd thought it through clearly. No signs meant not dangerous. She turned then to Derf. "Don't be silly, the Professor wouldn't put something dangerous before us and leave no warnings." This line of reasoning was exactly why she'd gone ahead to have a taste. If it WAS dangerous, surely they would have been told the moment they got there.

"Cherries, Professor." Jessa offered, somewhat distracted--completely distracted by her bestfriend's suggestion. "You think so????" Blue eyes flashed back to the Professor. "Was it really pee, Professor? Do you store vials and vials of it? I mean it makes sense I suppose but...." How very odd. How did she feel about demiguise pee. The jury was still out on this one.

"But then, what did YOU eat??? You don't think it's the powered BONES of the demiguise, do you????" Merlin, this poor creature never stood a chance. Sounded like they were using all of him.

"Nice to meet you too," Abey said back to Emmeline, albeit quite shyly. He liked having friends and making new ones, but it was incredibly difficult to shake the nerves that came with being around new people, even younger new people. "We're second years." Nodding was happening. He and Théo were remarkably different in height, with Abey being a good four inches taller by now, but, actually, they were the same year. And, actually, Théo was actually the older of the two, but that wasn't what Emmeline had asked about so all that stuff remained unsaid.

Abey had been about to return the question, all in the name of polite conversation, seeing as class hadn't started yet and they seemed to have a few minutes before they needed to pay attention, but he too had caught sight of Derf and his other friend tasting the stuff in the vials.

Though he sat watching them for a moment, it didn't really immediately register to Abey that what they were doing might be dangerous, not until the Emmeline girl reacted to it. But Abey couldn't say anything, he only sort of watched and stared and tried to listen to the thoughts that told him the Hogwarts staff wouldn't put them in danger, and ignore the ones that tried to remind him that Hogwarts sometimes wasn't exactly a very safe place at all actually and that he knew this first hand.

The anxious niggling in his chest had started to turn into more of an awful wrenching-and-slamming sensation inside his ribcage, which Abey knew to be his own frantic heartbeat. He watched worriedly, his anxiety only fuelled by the expressions of other students in the class, but... it all turned out to be okay... didn't it?

Still... that didn't slow his heart down one bit. Abey kept his eyes on Derf, even when the professor kicked off the class with a question about... something? Ingredients for a... demiguise potion? ... No, that didn't make sense. But also actually Abey didn't care about that right now. For another minute or so, he kept his eyes fixed on his villain, because he had that feeling again, that feeling like something bad was going to happen, and it was, actually, really really scary actually.

When it was really quite clear that nothing bad was happening to Derf, Abey finally dragged his gaze away, and glanced up at the professor. He still wasn't really sure about an answer... at all... and he didn't want to repeat what someone else had said so, he mumbled the one thing that seemed to show up in most of the potions they brewed.

"Water."

Nice and quietly, and no hand in the air, so that he could deny he'd said anything if it turned out to be wrong.

"Hey there cuz!" the Curly Top greeted Sammy as she joined them. The vials? "I dunno... theres a liquid and theres a solid and for all we know this could be the beginnings of soup or something." he grinned. His gaze fell on the block of cheese and then back to his cousin with a puzzled look. What was the cheese for again?

And now the class has started. INVISIBILITY potion?? They be making things invisible today? And as for this Jeopardy-esque round of discussions.... "Is there something that came from a Thestral Professor?"

Shay snapped to attention when the professor began to speak, calling the class to order. She didn't waste any time though because the first question was thrown out right away. Invisibility potion. Is that what they would be brewing today? Cool. But back to the task at hand. Shay thought about the question. That was a tricky one. She wasn't sure of the answer, but she decided to take a shot.

Shay raised her hand and waited to be called on. When her turn came, she began to speak. "Maybe you can use lacewing flies in an invisibility potion. I know that they are used for Polyjuice potion, to transform one person into another. Maybe it can help a person turn invisible too." Maybe?

Daniel thought about what he was going to say for a few moments before he raised his hand with a smile on his face. "A lizard Professor, you see they can make themselves invisible." Yeah he had thought about saying something else but he then decided this was probably a safer bet.

Well, the Professor was definitely off to an interesting start with the lesson, which it seemed the topic of today was invisibility potion. Curious and very interesting, so much that Skylar wondered how effective the potion might be in allowing her to compete in the upcoming event ... while being invisible. It was possible, right? Thinking about that, the fourth year almost missed the suggestion of demiguise pee by Derf, to which she had to cover her mouth to stifle her amusement. Sorry, she was kind of childish when it came to talk of pee and bodily functions.

Focus, Skylar, focus. She mentally scolded herself, as she tried to wrack her brain for something original that might be included in the invisibility potion. Water, was a given, and already mentioned. Demiguises and thestrals seemed to be good guesses, yet she didn't really know of many potions that had parts from either of those two creatures.

"Ground unicorn horn, Professor," Skylar said finally, raising her hand. "It's very useful and unicorns have quite majestic properties." So why shouldn't it help in invisibility? Made sense to her, at least.

Blaze was here and he was looking around the room. He was weeks into school already and hadn't found anyone very useful to him. This had been a problem last term and he blamed it on being the first year, but there just wasn't any good prospects. He would find a way to find someone to do his homework and other things he needed to be done around the school. Charles was not growing fast enough for his liking or him trying to figure out a way to learn partsletongue without being born with it wasn't happening yet either. He'd find a way though, yes he would.

Looking up when the professor started to talk Eddie got the glazed look in his eyes that was him half paying attention, but half not. The potion did seem interesting though and Eddie sat up a little bit and looked at what was in front of him. Could this make him invisible? The things he could do at this school if no one could see him. Professor,
professor what were you about the teach him. He kept the grin from his lips and kept his straight face showing.

The question was asked and he really had no clue nor did he care to try to look in his book. Instead he put his hand up and when he was called on answered with the first thing that came to his mind. "Nose hairs. They potion would need your nose hair to gather some DNA from you. That way when it put you invisible it could keep you together and not harm you in any way." There that was good, right?

"Oh," Hads smiled. Their new Professor used to be a student at Hogwarts too, apparently. "Well, then, welcome back." And then someone sat down next to her. One of her best friends; the one, the only... "Sizzling Salamander," Hadley said in greeting, trying hard to sound bored and slightly disappointed it was him, but failing to do so on account of the goofy grin.

She had just finished setting everything up with yet another person sat down, placing cheese down on the table. Okay... "Sammers." Hadley greeted. And oh, look, we're doing an invisibility potion, rather appropriate given she currently felt like she was under the effects of one. No worries. She let Ace and Sam catch up, and chat while she pondered the Professor's question.

Truth be told, Hads didn't really know anything about invisibility potions. Disillusionment charm? Yes. Potions to turn into animals? Yes. Invisibility potions? No. And then one of the new firstie's (Daisy) answer caught her attention. "Wait, they skin Demiguises to make invisibility cloaks?" That's horrible. Hads had always wanted her own invisibility cloak, but not anymore. Poor Demiguises.

Jonas quickly sat down for some reason despite being here for five years forgetting they had chairs. He sat down. Invisibility potion. What ingredients? He rose his hand.
"Invisible ingredients?"
He'd hoped the professor had a sense of humor this early in the year.

Brent had literally just slid through the door, when the professor click-clacked her way over to the door and closed it shut. Not good, Westwood. Not good. This was a new professor, and first impressions and all...yeah. He didn't greet her, because she got straight to greeting the class as a whole and starting the lesson. By that time, he was at his workstation and ready to go.

Okay, so...first question of the lesson, and it required him to really think. Not that he was against thinking at all, but seeing as he'd just rushed into class at the last second, his brain wasn't ready at all. Invisibility Potion...Invisibility Potion... His mind wandered as he tried to think of invisible things, or things that reminded him of invisibility.

He raised his hand. "There's an old saying called 'blind as a bat', so maybe we can use ingredients that come from a bat, like bat's spleen," he said. It sounded really, really disgusting, but weren't most potions ingredients that way? Besides, he knew bat's spleens were used in potions, because they were also ingredients in the Draught of Living Death.

Oh he finally noticed Emmeline. "Nice to meet you too" . Abey answered the other question and even well they were second years and yeah though other details did not matter. Other than "Two of the most awesome seconds years" There were more but it was fun to say. Since class was starting now.

Oh, Théodore didn't know. But he could guess what was in it. Water could work. But he didnt want to say something that obvious. So uh well he did not really have anything else besides well Okay. Hand up and

"Something invisible"

Was that said already. He did not know. Her wasn't listening that much.

Maxton was shocked that Daisy had chosen to sit right next to him. His older sister had loads of friends that she could've sat next to! Maybe she had faith that his potioneering skills were good enough to get them both through this class without any harm.

The second year perked up when the Professor asked a question. He thrust his hand up in the air before answering. "I don't know if it's a necessity in an invisibility potion... But how about some fruit juice? Just to make it taste a little nicer." Potions normally had all sorts of creepy nasty stuff in them. It made sense to try and make it taste a little better. After all, you had to drink them!

Closing her book, Elora glanced at the front of the class as the professor began to speak “What are some ingredients that you think is in an invisibility potion? Feel free to think outside of the box.”.

Elora brushed her chin with the feather of her quill as she thought back to her Potions Book. She had only read a few chapters and was familiar with the forgetfulness potion. However, she had yet to read about the invisibility potion.

Out of habit, her eyes found their way to clock, sighing softly as her mind wandered back to her family in England, and how they would be having her mom's famous cherry pie. All of a sudden Elora raised her hand, Professor, Would Cherries be an ingredient? I remember my mom telling me about cherries and potions when we made a cherry pie?" She titled her head as she asked the question.

Sitting silent she listened to what the others were saying after hearing what the questions was but she herself kept silent, why? Simple, she didn’t wanted to work THAT hard so early in the morning… Maybe… Maybe when the next question would be asked she considered answering but now… Now she just wrote down the answers she herself didn’t knew or those who sounded just fun or really creative.

Olly showed up just as Noelle was putting on her lab coat. Thank Merlin. She grinned brightly at him. "Hey Olly." She said giving her person his usual greeting.

Her eyes traveled over the classroom as more people arrived. She waved to anyone she knew before spotting Jessa wave at her. She grinned and gave the girl a wave too.

Another person came and sat down at the station with Etta, Olly, and herself. Stasya. Noelle grinned, knowing the girl on a first name basis now. "Hey there." She greeted happily before the new professor started speaking. Her attention turned to the class then.

Invisibility potion. Olly and her had been going to make that potion last year but their plans had fallen through with all the monster happenings. She couldnt remember the ingredients though since the two had merely glanced at the potion instead of making it.

Demiguise hair was a good thought for an ingredient to be in the potion though. Werent invisibility cloaks made of those? "Yeah, I agree with the demiguise hair."

He shot Daisy a smile as she passed and waved at her brother who was probably the most serious twelve year old Levi had ever met. The boy took out his journal, self-inking quill and in big letters wrote, Invisibility Potion. Because that seemed like a pretty good guess, seeing Professor Canterbury's question.

Demiguise hair did seem like a good guess, too, though. He raised his hand. "What about chameleon's blood?" For obvious reasons, of course. "All potions wear off eventually," He explained, tapping his chin with his quill. Levi pushed up his glasses. "So, in the end, it could perhaps help the drinker maintain not the invisibility, but certainly the ability to blend in with the background the way an average disillusionment charm might." Long enough to at least give the person plenty of time to get out before being spotted.

Not that invisibility potions were only exclusive for potentially secret, sneaky, maybe illegal endeavors. But.

Matt was busy playing with the vial with the sandy looking substance and he didn't bother replying at first. WHICH proved to be a mistake, because all of his ideas had been claimed by people.

He was going to say unicorn hair just for the sake of it, but someone mentioned demiguise hair, which made more sense. Then his response in his head changed to powdered unicorn horn only because it was related to the same magical creature he had in mind, but that was then mentioned too. The Gryffindor chuckled as one or two people said something about invisible ingredients because lol, cheeky answers were the best.

The fifth year opened his mouth to say his own cheeky brilliant idea when someone SAID it. Some chameleon derived ingredient. MAN. There was nothing left for him to say. "I agree with him." The boy said as he pointed to his housemate that had said chameleon blood just when Matt was about to give his answer. He wasn't going to say BLOOD specifically, but that was a good idea, Matt thought. He was happy with that.

Zarina knew she would sit by herself, she wasn't in the mood for much small talk anyways. Everyone here seemed to know everybody especially in different houses. Well then again they weren't really the new girl like she was. Some seemed to be in Hogwarts for more than a few years. She heard the Professor greet her and Zarina nodded her head and gave her a soft smile. "Good morning.." she replied back. Now it was time for the lesson. Straight to it huh? Zae heard the question about “What are some ingredients that you think is in an invisibly potion?" She repeated it in her head a few times and then began to think about it. She could think outside the box.

Invisibility potion eh? What ingredients could be in it? Zarina had no idea. She wasn't really a potions whiz. She could come up with a clever idea. Then she heard the unicorn hair aspect and she agreed with that. "I agree with the unicorn hair aspect.." she nodded towards her fellow slytherin.

Oliver thought about this.. He'd like to think outside the box, but he didn't have the mind for science or practical thinking and since there were already so many answers out there he figured the first thing he could think of couldn't have been too ridiculous. His hand raised. "Maybe Demiguise hair?" He thought maybe a bodily fluid as well.. But which one? Maybe blood?

Ugh.. More thinking.. because what had properties to turn one invisible.. There were thestrals but they weren't exactly invisible were they? Certain people could see them very easily so that didn't really work out either.

But maybe it wasn't something invisible. Maybe being asked to think outside the box was because whatever it was had to be more mundane and not invisible at all.

An invisibility potion? Were they going to make one of those? That would be really cool. It did make sense that they would first have to know the ingredients but he liked when they were just given a recipe. How was he supposed to guess the ingredients? Some students had already given pretty good answers. Demiguise hair. Something from a thestral. Those were good answers, seeing as those creatures has properties of invisibility themselves. Another good answer might be plants with properties of invisibility, though Olly could not think of any off the top of his head. He couldn't think of anything else either. Since he really had nothing to contribute to the discussion he just stayed silent, listening to the other suggestions.

Teddy picked up the vial of clear liquid and held it up to eye level. Her head tilted from side to side as she swirled the vial around gently. She then repeated it with the other vial.

They seemed to be essences of something, perhaps of the Demiguise or the Thestrals since they have invisibility in their DNA. "Could the sandy substance be something grounded down into dust? Thestral hoofs? Perhaps a Demiguise skull?" But what could the liquid be?

Rooney instantly stuck out his tongue as Miss Katherine came close to him, swatting her hand away from his precious badge. "Don't make me bite your finger off, Toussaint. Finger sandwiches." He wasn't a prat anyway. He had to have his badge on display. It was a rule in the Head Boy handbook he had started to write to pass on to any and all Head students that were to serve Hogwarts after him. They were welcome in advance. His most valuable tips and tricks. And warnings to stay away from Kettleburns, Toussaints and his precious Olivia Lynn. Who had not came to sit with him and therefore he was slightly put out about that. Made sure she knew about it too. Lots of pouting in her direction and hands shaped into hearts. Maybe when the Professor wasn't looking, he'd send her a flurry of pink confetti to remind her that his heart was hers.

Make it pop like pink confetti allllllllllll over his love. Ah.

He was already fond of this Professor. She'd gone easy on Derfael and Miss Jessa for whatever it was they had gotten up to, and in Rooney's mind...that was the best way for the kids to accept her instead of fighting back. Good call, Professor Canterbury. Amazing call. Rooney may have been considering applauding for her, but figured it wholly unnecessary for now. He'd just smile and nod his approval. Yes yes. Much approved. Stamp of approval from the Head Boy. Did everyone in here know that he was Head Boy? He wished that there had been an announcement at the start of term feast like there was for new Professors. He was like one step below Professors now.

Roo didn't give an answer, but instead noted down all the answers that everyone else gave and added a tally if they were mentioned twice. He ooohed and nodded at the answer about a chameleon, completely agreeing with the logic of that one.
