Default Office of Healer River Reed

Beyond the smaller antechamber is Healer Reed’s office. If you were lucky enough to tour all the parts of the Hospital Wing, you would notice that his office is perhaps the cosiest. All of his furniture is in deep brown including his floor, which is adorned with a huge Brazilian Aztec rug he got as a parting gift from Castelobruxo. As you open the door to his office, you will be welcomed by the scent of peppermint, and beyond is his handsome desk filled with medical records, and other paper work. You would notice that this time, he has provided his visitors comfortable chairs to sit on. Immediate matters pertaining to Potions, or health concerns that need immediate attention will be done here.

Just a few steps away from his table is a medium sized work station filled with glass beakers, cylinders, volumetric flasks suspended in stands, flexible tubes, a muggle microscope, Petri dishes, and perhaps plant samples in between glass slides. Underneath are huge amber bottles where a good amount of healing potions are stored. This area has a protective barrier as well so no one can contaminate his experiments.

On your right is a cosy fireplace, matched with two overstuffed armchairs. In between is a modest coffee table where a tea tray is placed, and a complete tea set for tea time. Most likely, this is where Healer Reed will invite you to sit down to have a chat, or to have a chat with the medieval Healers. Be warned, however, that those gentlemen are easily excited when the subject of conversation has anything to do with Healing. Just beside the fireplace is another door that will lead to Healer Reed’s dormitory. This room is kept locked, and protective charms are placed on the door.

If you are looking for Roscoe and Bumi, his Newfoundland rescue dogs are most likely on the left side of his office where Healer Reed has set up a cosy place for them to relax, sleep, or interact with their visitors. The area is stuffed with cushions big enough for them to lay on, and a few more thrown in for their visitors. The two are drool offenders, so be prepared for a messy greeting. On this side, you will also see another door. This access is directly linked to the main hospital ward so that Healer Reed has quick access to his patients. Beside this door is a full wall of tea canisters, this is where Healer Reed keeps his precious tea collection.

OOC: Please do not post your characters in here, unless Healer Reed instructed you to do so. He may entertain ill patients here, if he deems it necessary. Otherwise, all injured/ill patients should utilise the Patient’s Check-In Area.

His current train of thoughts was interrupted by the sound of knuckles knocking on his door. Quenching the temptation to narrow down the person who'd visit him that day, River instead dropped his quill in its ink well, and stacked his parchments neatly to the side of his ever messy office table.

"Yes, come in!"

Huh. It looks like term has officially started for him...

OOC: You may now post in his office thread! ^,^
The answer from the other side of the door came a little too soon for the boy's liking, and Levi swallowed again, thickly. He considered, not for the first time, the possibility of bolting; he did run every morning with his siblings and Daisy, so he was confident enough he could run fast enough to get out of there before the healer poked his head out at the lack of response.

He craned his neck to one side then the other. This was stupid. He was being stupid. There was no reason to be nervous; healer Reed would let him help around for the term or he wouldn't and he would just deal with it. It was that simple.

Gryffindor. He was a Gryffindor.

Levi loosened his tie, a little bit, let himself in. "Healer Reed!" Pipe down. He cleared his throat, surveyed the office, which was unchanged from the last time he had visited, as far as he could tell. And there were the enormous dogs. They got a wave and a smile; he had, over the summer, developed a new appreciation for canines in general. "I was wondering if you could spare a few minutes, sir. For me. I have some questions--follow up questions, from last term."

River's hand remained on top of the stack of parchments, his eyes glued to the door wondering why his visitor decided to linger outside his office. It was usual that they come in bolting in, showing or telling them their symptoms or what not. The portrait of Healers, with their human skeleton also fell silent and watched the door with great curiosity. Was the visitor in for some Healing advice? Because they've got tons to share. They couldn't shut their mouths up about it.

The Healer who was sat on his chair began to rise from his seat when Levi Kenning finally revealed himself. His enthusiasm was met with a warm smile. Roscoe and Bumi had their ears perked up by the sudden sound but nonetheless kept quiet as the boy waved to them. Roscoe was first to rise from his dog bed and started to sniff Levi's pocket, 'D'ya have any treats, hooman?' That was probably what the big black dog had in mind. Of course, the portrait of Healers were all smiling at the future Healer below them, waving their hands to the Gryffindor. Excited about their visitor, the skeleton's hand that was being waved as well ricocheted off from its socket and to the next portrait sitting beside them. Oops.

"Ah, Levi. Of course, come in and take a seat," he said gesturing to one of the armchairs near his fireplace. "Don't mind the Healers too much. They're quite...excitable. They don't get too much visitors except me." Why it was placed in his office, he had no solid idea, but they are quite handy when he's too exhausted to produce a patronus to send messages to other professors. "So, follow up questions from last term?" River already had a hunch as to what it would be. The real question is, did Levi pass his pre-requisites? "Let's hear it."

Hesitantly, Levi reached down to ruffle the big dog's head. "I don't have anything for you, mate, if that's what you're looking for." The contents of his pockets would have probably proven to him largely uninteresting to the dog; a small, and admittedly crushed self-inking quill and a portable watch since Declan had never returned his. It was upsetting to think about and the slight frown that began to appear on his forehead proved as much so he pushed it out of his head. Levi distracted himself by scratching the dog behind the ears. "What's your name, huh?"

The healer appeared to be in perfectly good spirits and was keeping very interesting company, which the boy was resolute to take as a good sign. The sixth year felt compelled to laugh at the enthusiasm the skeleton was displaying but instead he grinned. "Hello. Sorry if I interrupted your conversation." The portraits received a nod, as greeting. "I suppose you always do have some extra input, at least?" However unsolicited. Portraits around the school, from his experience, always did have something to say.

Although Healer Reed's attitude (that he remembered to use his name!), the portraits and the dog had helped him alleviate some of his nerves somewhat, Levi felt the back of his net grow hot at Reed's question. He sat down on the seat opposite to the man's, and leaned back on the chair in an attempt to appear perfectly at ease. Mostly, he'd have succeeded had it not been for his hands reaching up to loosen his tie some more. "Ah, yes." He removed his messenger bag and set it on his lap, retrieving his OWL results and recommendation letter from the weekends spent volunteering at St. Mungo's. Levi extended both to the healer. "I also spent some time at Slug and Jiggers. Mr. Garrettson was very kind to let me shadow him."

Though he had not necessarily cared at the time about his marks on Divination and Astronomy, they were difficult to ignore now. Even if as far as he knew, they had nothing to do with healing. Unless the healing in question was to take place in outer space or by reading tea leaves. He cleared his throat. "I suppose my question is if what we discussed last term is still a possibility?"

Let's just say that Levi's pocket doesn't have the best smell at the moment as the big ball of fur made a whining sound, and sat its behind on the carpeted floor. "That one is always hungry." River shook his head and scratched the back of his dog's ear, "His name is Roscoe, and the other one is Bumi." Roscoe gave a bark in response, and Bumi simply snorted out air from its nose, looking bored as ever.

While Levi addressed the Healers, he took the chance to clean up classified medical records of students, and kept them locked in a cabinet behind his desk. Not that he didn't trust the boy, but it was simply because of the fact that he promised these students that he will keep their...unique conditions, confidential. If he was going to be honest really, he didn't expect to find himself in his position right now, acting as their Form Tutor. He thought the Heads of House would handle these situations, but since most if not all of the conditions were health-related as well.

River followed Levi, and he too sat comfortably in his armchair, realizing that it was his first time sitting on it in two weeks. Apparently, the influx of first years and transfers this term had been the same as the last, and it kept him really busy. It was his rule to always be on top of his work. The Healer watched Levi with great interest as he shuffled through his belongings and procured two parchments for him to take. River accepted it without a word and went through each of the parchment carefully. The corners of his mouth slowly curled upwards. Nodding, he turned his head to face the Gryffindor. "I am very impressed, Levi. Well done on your achievements!" River sat straighter in his chair, and nodded his head in response to his question. "I am a man of my word. You have proven yourself worthy, so I am taking you under my wing until you graduate."

River placed both parchments on the table beside him, and clasped his hands together. "Healing, as you know, is a multi-branched discipline. Have you decided on the course that you would like to specialise in?" It was an important question of course.

Roscoe and Bumi both got waves and small smiles, though largely because he was reminded of Daisy and how she'd probably find their presence to be the most interesting thing about the office. Which was a distracting thought to have about his best friend so he stopped and zeroed back on Healer Reed, watching the man occupy the seat across him.

Waiting was like pulling teeth or like a layer of his skin had been forcibly removed, feelings which he'd never actually quite literally experienced, of course; but Levi felt compelled to think he didn't have to in order to have at least a very close estimate of how they'd feel like, exactly. It wasn't necessarily the first time he'd felt as such though this time it was of course for entirely different reason; reasons that could and probably would determine his future, or at least the one he was planning to have.

Levi opened his mouth, already mentally scrambling for justifications for his less than describable scores in Astronomy and Divination and frankly, Arithmancy. But just as he opened his mouth, so did Healer Reed and he clamped his mouth shut, bracing himself for the disappointment that never, as it turned out, actually came.

Becoolbecoolbecoolbecoolbecoolbecool.

"Thank you."

That had almost sounded cool. Almost.

"Uh." Say something SMART. "Neurology...research...mental illnesses. Psychiatry? Or maybe getting rid off Dragon Pox." He still had time for decide, and mostly needed time to arrange his scrambled thoughts right about now. He blinked, evidently still surprised. "But I wanna try...stuff....and decide what fits me best????"

Taking under his wing??????????

YES.

Trained in the art of Healing, River cannot help but notice the slight discomfort on Levi. Amused, he sat back crossing his legs and putting his index finger against his lips, observing the young man. There was no doubt that the Gryffindor was a brilliant one, in fact, he’d do really well in Ravenclaw, however, River cannot help but be curious as to why Levi was so unsure of himself. Did something happen in his past? Did his siblings bully him because he was academically inclined? Or, Merlin forbid, he’d found the Healer intimidating? Because, the last time he checked, he wasn’t the scary kind of peer. River knew best that he should be as approachable as possible, especially if he had to deal with physical and mental problems that most do not understand.

One thing was for sure though. River has to instill confidence in Levi. In all seriousness and with utmost sincerity, he wanted Levi to be better than him. It’s not just about helping someone reach his dreams, but to be an instrument to propel the young man to be the best version of himself, as a future Healer or otherwise.

Levi’s thanks was met with a nod and a grin. “True, you still have time to decide but it would be best to try and narrow it down now. You’re already in your sixth year.” A gentle reminder, by the way. “You’re interested in the behavioural sciences, I see, as well as in magical bugs and diseases.” Honestly, it did fit Levi’s personality. He was curious and calm, so those would be perfect for him.

“In our Hospital Wing, and even outside actually, all sorts of cases are dealt with utmost confidentiality. I have highly classified cases right now, and as much as I want you to experience handling these patients, it would be against the Healer’s Code. So…” River sat up straighter in his chair, and summoned a red folder from his desk and reviewed it. “This is what we are going to do. I will allow you to observe light cases, or cases that will cover the basics, but you are not allowed to ask the patient any questions. You are to take down observation notes, and, upon submitting your report, you will not speak of it to any one. Not a single soul. Understand?” River closed the folder and looked at Levi with all the seriousness in his eyes. “Since this is sensitive matter, I came up with an Agreement. If you agree to it, write your name down and sign it. I will give you time to think about it.” Considering that the agreement was quite strict.

Was there anything else?

Wowza!

Sometimes good news were as bad as bad news.

That was probably a touch dramatic, but there was something to be said about preparing so much for the worst that in the face of the complete opposite, one was left with no choice but to stare. It wasn't like this should have been too surprising. It wasn't like this was something that was given to him simply because of his good looks and usually agreeable disposition; he'd worked hard. He'd earned it, if he was being honest.

He began to compartmentalize, slowly, fighting through the molasses coating the gears inside his head. First, he'd write to his parents; briefly, making it seem like it wasn't a big deal. Then he'd--well, he'd not tell his siblings, largely because he wasn't doing a lot of talking to either of them these days, but he would send them both personalized birdies detailing the news and would prepare himself to receive nothing in return. Thinking about Declan and Althea gave him a dull ache in the back of his throat that was the opposite Levi wanted, so he focused on Daisy, instead. She'd probably just get the news, casually delivered, on their way to class and he'd tell her to 'Sshhh' and remind her she was to pick him up from the hospital wing whenever he was there. To keep him from appearing too eager in Healer Reed's eyes. Which he probably did already, so there was no need to get more embarrassing. And... there. Compartmentalizing completed. Mostly.

"Behavioral sciences and Magical Bugs and Diseases," He repeated, testing the words, finally giving a title to what he'd been considering for well over a year by now. It felt very official. "That sounds like a handful. I'll probably be training forever." This was not a complaint and he made sure it didn't sound like one.

No wonder Genny and Noelle had suggested he was a Ravenclaw in disguise. But Healer Reed had taken a serious tone and an equally serious look to his eye that Levi didn't think he'd quite witnessed before. This should not have been an exciting revelation, and yet. Some reactions just could not be helped, sometimes. "That makes sense." He was wanted to say he didn't need to think about it, but used a different wording, instead. "That won't be a problem. I barely talk about me to other people. More of a listener, really." Probably shouldn't have said that, either, but privacy was important. "Where do I sign?" Much better, obviously.

River was on his second clementine when he heard a knock on his door. Sigh. Apparently, he's not allowed to rest and eat in peace while students roamed about. After swallowing the last piece in his mouth, River cleared his throat and opened his office door to see who it was. "Miss Kenning," A pleasant surprise indeed! Who would've thought that the female Kenning would pay him a visit all of a sudden? "Come in," he said grinning at the Hufflepuff and gestured his head towards his office.

Althea yawned and tried her best to keep herself alert and awake. No need for Healer Reed to see the consequences of her late night studying - although it was very much evident from the dark circles under her eyes that she'd given up trying to hide - so, she would fake some well-needed pep and positivity. She was only 14% certain that he wouldn't be able to see through her facade.

With that in mind, the Hufflepuff gave herself a little pinch to wake up. She returned to flipping through the magazine, and was fully engrossed in reading it when Healer Reed opened the door. The fifth year stared and blinked for a moment before realizing that he had invited her inside. "Oh," she started, and then smiled, "hello Healer Reed." Manners were important, after all. After placing the magazine back - neatly, at that - Althea moseyed on into his office.
