No expectations.
Well, no, that was a lie.
Paige fully expected to not win this duel nor any duel this term and she was not just saying that to be modest. It was not her aim to become some champion dueler, nor was it to win. The seventh year had purely signed up for the experience and to push herself to think under pressure and in structured high stake situations. It was one thing to learn and practice in a classroom, but if there was anything she had taken away from her OWL practical exam it was that she was seriously lacking in real time experience. Also something she had learned during her summer internship when she had been put on the spot to make decisions and assessments rather than follow the guidance of her assigned healer. She had clammed up, mind a complete blank, and forgotten even the simplest of spells. So she needed this. She needed to learn to trust and condition her instincts.
She just wished she didn't have to face Maggie first. Someone she was on more friendly terms with to start would have been nice. Although maybe this WAS for the best since the Hufflepuff had finally found her voice and was able to stand up and even fight back, in her own way, against the Slytherin's indifference and often poignant words against her.
Fingers brushing against the note from Noel inside her pocket first, bringing a smile and slight reddish hue to her cheeks, Paige retrieved her wand from its sunflower yellow holster and did as was customary - bowed to her opponent. "Good luck," she chirped as she took on her dueling stance. In all honestly, she really just wanted to cast a Patented Daydream Charm on Maggie and call it a day, Charms being the only branch of magic that she had any real confidence in and with the marks to show for it, but that wouldn't help her achieve her aim of participating in Dueling Club.
Maaaaaaaaaaaaaybe...as a last resort towards the end? Maybe.
With no real strategy in mind, Paige raised her wand - a bit upwards with the intention of making it rain down on Maggie than just blast her in the chest with water - and cast the first spell that came to mind. "Aguamenti!" - which came out JUST as disastrous as it had in Potions class - and followed it up quickly with "Steleus!"
Just...a few distractions...maybe? Yes.
Was she allowed to apologize already?

Paige was going to be her first opponent for this term. This was certainly going to be interesting. Especially since the other girl hadn't actually dueled the past few years. Which would probably work in Maggie's favor. Because while she had the disadvantage of not knowing just WHAT Paige's dueling skills were like due to lack of opportunities to observe her. However, she also did know that wand work usually wasn't exactly Paige's strong suit.
So there. Interesting. Definitely.
Once all the dueling etiquette things had been dealt with, Maggie....waited. She wanted Paige to attack first. Just so she would know what she was dealing with here. Because if there was one thing the past few years of dueling club had taught her, it was not to do anything impulsively. Not let her feelings dictate her actions. So, patience was a virtue right?
And there it was.
Her eyes were fixed on Paige's wand. Water. Really? While she WAS ready to defend herself against the spell - especially since it was badly executed - Maggie just...didn't. No. She'd pulled her hair back so even if it got wet she wasn't really all too bothered. Not only was she anticipating a second spell - and blocking a stream of water was VERY messy and would probably make it hard for her to see - but she also wanted to throw Paige off. The girl always seemed so certain and optimistic about everything. So, surprise?
"Protego!" There was the second spell. Maggie quickly reached up to wipe her face clean of the water from Paige's earlier spell while the second one deflected back to where the other girl was. She then followed it up with a Jelly-Brain Jinx, curious as to what effect it would have on someone like Paige. So far, she hadn't really seen anything too impressive yet.
Maybe this WAS going to be an easy duel after all.

Given how Maggie had reacted in Potions, Paige was pleasantly surprised to see that her opponent simply let the spell hit her like that. Pleasantly surprised, but also admittedly quite bothered by it - if she was being entirely honest. That entire scene over FAR less water? It actually caused the Hufflepuff to giggle softly. Very softly.
Wand still clutched tightly in her fist, the seventh year's reflexes were just enough for her to cast Protego against her own spell being reflected back at her and then her mind was racing as to what to cast next rather than anticipating a second spell being thrown her way. Which was why the Hufflepuff was hit with the full force of the Jelly Brains Jinx, knocking her back slightly and causing her eyes to cross as the jinx took its full effect.
There was an AWFUL lot of spinning going on, causing Paige to reach up and press her palm firmly to her forehead in an attempt to make it stop even just a little bit. Stumbling around a bit more, it almost looked as though she were going to take herself out of the duel by walking - or falling rather - right off the platform. But then, in the next moment, Paige found herself annoyed at how things were spinning and how she suddenly felt like some child's toy being spun around for their own amusement.
Apparently, when a generally passive and gentle natured Hufflepuff such as Paige Skeeter gets struck with a Jelly Brains Jinx...they become a bit of a loose canon.
Dropping her hand quite suddenly from her features, Paige glared at Maggie with blue eyes that were, well, not quite her own while pivoting in place with surprising precision and confidence - although still a little stumbly thanks to the jinx in effect - and not a second later had sent an enthusiastic Smashing Spell right towards Maggie.

Paige seemed CONFUSED by her lack of reaction to the other girl's first spell. Magdalena Natalie Traulton wasn't allergic to water. She just didn't like it when it was splashed on her hair. But right now she didn't mind it. It probably made her hair look even cooler all pulled back. It made her look like a proper dueler who was too busy to be bothered by something like water.
Like, please. *hair flip*
The fact that her spell hit Paige IN THE FACE earned her a smirk. That was certainly going to be an interesting one. Now, what could possibly happen with someone like Paige. She was a Hufflepuff after all. Honestly, if anything she'd probably start apologizing for everything. Or try to hug her or something. Hufflepuff things, you kn-
WHOA!
Maggie was too busy being smug about Paige's reaction to cast a defensive spell. Instead she quickly dropped to the ground and rolled out of the way. Whoa. Crap. What had just happened? She actually stared at the Hufflepuff for a few seconds, genuinely surprised by the girl's reaction. Whaaaaaaaaat???????
But then again this was a duel and this only meant that Maggie would have to finish this more quickly. No more games. "Flipendo!" She cast the spell from the ground still before jumping to her feet again and following it up with a Trip Jinx. That would have to bring her to her knees. And then she could finish her off.

Vision coming in and out of focus, as if someone were tuning her pupils like the lens of a camera, Paige's eyes crossed at JUST the right moment to see not one but TWO Maggies diving and rolling to avoid her spell and subsequent explosions. It was...hilarious...for some reason...and precisely why the Hufflepuff erupted into a fit of giggles at the sight. Something she would have never done had it not been for the Jelly Brains Jinx still in effect and influencing her rational.
TEHEHEHEHEHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.
Laughter ensuing and eyes uncrossing, Paige had no real time to lavish her wand and perform any sort of defensive spells against Maggie's casting. Her shaky reflexes were just enough so that she was able to cooly sidestep with a small spin out of the range of both spells - although she once again came dangerously close to stepping RIGHT off the platform once again.
Pivoting, eyes crossing again, Paige raised her wand not to Maggie but the ground beneath her side of the platform. "Spongify!" Eyes still a bit wild, the Hufflepuff followed with a weak Stinging Jinx as she stumbled away from the edge and back towards the middle of the platform.
Still giggling like a maniac.

Was that her true self showing there? Had her jelly-brain jinx brought that out in the Hufflepuff? WERE PEOPLE SEEING THIS???? Like, see? Paige wasn't all that innocent and nice and everything. She had different sides to her too. Like, crazy ones for instance. What was UP with that maniacal laughter????
It was a little scary to be honest.
And what was UP with that spell Paige had just cast on the floor???? Like, the Hufflepuff DID know this was a duel right? Maggie's eyes briefly flickered over to where she knew the audience was. Were they seeing this? Not that she cared about whether this was FAIR or anything. All she cared about right now was winning. Because losing against Paige Skeeter was NOT an option!
"Protego!" Maggie was forced to cast the spell so quickly that she didn't have time to focus on it enough for it to rebound. Oh well. As long as it hadn't HIT her. Now, okay, this duel had to end right now. Because this Paige was 100% unpredictable and Maggie HATED it. Unpredictable people were probably the worst dueling partners to have. Surely Hirsch would agree with her there.
Taking a deep breath Maggie focused all her energy on the nonverbal Expelliarmus she was sending at Paige. This ends now.

There was more cackling. And giggling. And then LOADS more cackling as the Hufflepuff watched her spell dissipate against the Shield Charm cast by Maggie. Ooooooooooh monkey see monkey do? Why yes, she thought so! Or, well, sort of thought so. The Jelly Brains Jinx was seeping a bit further into her consciousness and making the seventh year feel a bit more unpredictable...but there was also a tameness that seemed to glaze over her eyes.
Clear and sugary...like a donut!
Her wand up, and thinking about donuts, Paige cast Protego on herself - because she was being a monkey! - and avoided losing her wand. Which really was for the best because without her wand, well, there was a chance that this badger may lose that sugar glaze and just make a RUN for the Slytherin. Feeble as the Hufflepuff and her muscles were.
More loud and obnoxious giggling ensued...followed by some uncharacteristic twirls in place before the Hufflepuff cast a Feather-light Charm on herself as well JUST in case Maggie also decided to go all monkey-see-monkey-do and make the ground beneath her feet all spongy and springy.

Maggie even glanced in the general direction of where she expected Professor Hirsch to be again. Seriously, the worst opponent was an unpredictable one. And Paige Skeeter was currently 100% unpredictable. And insane. Hufflepuffs. Wow. And people asked her why she thought they were the most useless house. WERE THEY SEEING THIS???
It was only when she tried to move - despite everything this was still a DUEL after all - that Maggie realized there was something wrong with her side of the floor. Whaaaaaat? Looking down for a moment she blinked and tried to figure out what to do about that. Until then though she watched Paige cast a spell on herself. Featherlight spell. Right okay. That was-
"Ventus Duo!" Featherlight + Wind = WINNING!
Right?
Just in case it didn't Maggie followed it up with an Impedimenta before diverting her attention back to the weird floor at her feet. It would make moving quite hard. Would a simple Finite work? Eeeeeeeh.

Hirsch couldn't help but feel a certain level of tension in the air but, being the kind of professor that he was, he was choosing to ignore it. If it wasn't going to effect their duel, he didn't really need to know.
Something that was harder to ignore? That giggling. He blinked between the two girls, utterly confused as to how the situation could be funny. Duels weren't funny, were they? Unless the two had some kind of inside joke about one of the spells that he was unaware of.
That would be the second part of this duel he was going to blissfully forget about.
Something that was harder to forget about was the non-verbal spell being cast. Hopefully Frankie had been watching, he mused as he constructed the magical shield and stopped Miss Skeeter from being hit by either of the spells. "Excellent!" he called, stepping out from his spot and making his way towards the pair, "That was an excellent display of magic, I have to say. Advanced magic, too." Non-verbals. That was all.
"Congratulations, Miss Skeeter, you've taken the lead for this duel. And well done on putting up a great fight, Miss Traulton." See? Impressed.
