Default Herbology Lesson I - Grafting

As the students enter the greenhouse today, it is a warm reprieve from the cold that engulfed them outside. The sun was shining, and Paul was sitting atop a table in front of the greenhouses, his gloves next to him as he waited, calmly, for people to enter.

“Circle up, circle up, everyone!” he called out every few minutes. As the students should be well aware by now, since it was November, they meditated before starting every lesson.

Four different types of trees were huddled in the back of the greenhouse, but they were young, and most had little to no leaves budding. This was not a lesson that some would find interesting, but Paul thought it would be fun nonetheless! Granted, anything to do with plants was fun to Paul. There was also a few tools in the front on the table Paul was sitting on...just in case students couldn’t handle the magic today...however, one of the things they would be doing would REQUIRE magic so...hmm. He hoped this wouldn’t be an issue.

There was a basket of flowers on the table, too, for people to give to others, like he had done last term. And he HOPED they remembered the rule! It was such a lovely one, after all.

“Start clearing your mind noooooooow!” he smiled giddily and waved his wand in a leisurely way, making bubbles come out of the end of it...right into the faces of the students as they walked in.

Who didn’t like bubbles?

OOC: Hi, guys, welcome to class (whooh!). Just a couple things to keep in mind. This is not the first Herbology lesson of term, all right? It’s like..late November IC right now. And yes, Paul starts all of his lessons with meditations. <3 Secondly, the flower rule is still in play. If you are not familiar with it:
*There is a basket of flowers Paul keeps in the front; feel free to have your character come up at any time to grab one, and give it to another student if someone particularly touches them emotionally or anything.
Familiarize yourself with not only our rules but also SS site rules, all of which apply.

I will not be moving on for another 18 or so hours!

Professor Myers did not look anything at all like a protractor type of person. Still... Jaemin pushed his seat back a little, leaning down until he was eye-level with the pot that his tree was in. It shouldn't be hard to make it close to what that picture looked like, right? Herbology wasn't an exact science... at least not that he knew of. At least not exact-exact like that.

"I think it'll be okay if we're close. It just can't be a straight cut." He nodded slowly. His dad didn't use protractors or anything like that... he just kinda did it. The small boy hopped out of his seat. "I'll get the knives!"

He bounced up to Paul, little cheeks going pink again as he remembered his failure at saying the word correctly, and collected two of the grafting knives for himself and Julia before bouncing back to their station and setting them down.

Ready to goooooo.

"Can you do it?" She probably could. Julia was smart and capable and surely she would be just as careful with plants as Jaemin himself was. "Do you want help?"

He could hold her tree very still for her. They were little. They would be easy to move around if they weren't anchored and stuff.
Julia didn’t think close would cut it at all no pun intended. Hadn’t Professor Myers just gone on at length about how it couldn’t just be any cut, and that it had to be a perfect 45 degrees? She fidgeted in her seat the entire time Jay was gone. Besides, how were they going to know exactly three inches above the soil? She had an uncle who proudly and constantly insisted that the width of his thumb was exactly one inch, but (a) she didn’t believe him when he said it and (b) he wasn’t here.

She groused incoherently, annoyed at herself for leaving her maths kit at home. It had everything she’d need to make the perfect whip graft: protractor, ruler, marking pencil… ugh. It wasn’t that she wasn’t going to try grafting without the kit—she obviously was—but… but it was nice to be positive about measurements, when they had to be so exact. Plus it’d feel like horrendous failure if her tree died.

Still.

”I can do it.” She plucked herself up when Jay returned, and took the grafting knife from him. It looked sharp, and there was no doubt in her mind that someone, soon, was going to cut themselves with it. She resolved that it wouldn’t be her.

”You do yours first, and I’ll watch.” He was the expert with the flower behind his ear to prove it, after all.

NOTES? They were supposed to be keeping notes?! Ariadne scrambled to grab a piece of parchment and a quill and then copied down the first part of the notes. She then scribbled down the difference between scion and rootstock before considering herself all caught up. WHEW. She nodded when Myers asked if they had everything. Barely, but YES. Ariadne looked down at her pitifully copied notes and vowed to rewrite them later.

For now, she retrieved her gloves and slid them on her hands. She looked at the two trees she'd chosen, the honey-locust and the mahogany. Erm...which one did she use for the scion, and which one did she use for the rootstock? Err... "Professor?" she asked, raising her hand. "I chose the honey-locust and the mahogany. Is it the honey-locust I use for the rootstock? Or the mahogany?" Should this be obvious to her? Because it wasn't, and she had a feeling she could seriously mess up her hybrid if she did something backwards.

He was perfectly willing to do his first! Jaemin wiggled around excitedly and lowered himself so he could look at the tree's stem better, mentally noting where he was going to cut. He reached out one hand and gently poked. Riiiiiight there.

"It's not too hard! My dad does it," he murmured, looking at Julia and nodding. The small boy picked up his knife and carefully gripped the tree above the spot where he was going to cut, carefully touching it to where he was going to start. "Just here... and down."

He pulled the knife, and it easily pressed into the tree's little trunk. It was so little... he angled the blade down, cutting down and away from himself and leaving an angled little stump behind in the soil. Poor tree...

He hugged the separated stem to himself. It'd be okay, tree. It'd be all better soon.

Julia peered over his shoulder, careful not to get in his way, and watched him work. And then…

And then she arrived at her first major dilemma. The poster-pictures Professor Myers had set up seemed to indicate that they should put their blades on the three-inch spot and cut up, but Jay had just cut down, and she couldn’t even use the Professor’s cut as a tie-breaker because he’d gone and used a spell for it.

She eyed her saplings, trying to decide what to do. In the end, she decided to go with Jay’s example. If they failed, they failed together. Friendship!

After lifting her arms and shaking them to roll up her sleeves, Julia held her sapling where Jay had—with less gentleness, admittedly—and made the pre-cut nick he’d done. It took nearly a minute of angling and reangling the knife, along with mentally arguing to herself about what was exactly a 45-degree angle, and then she gave a little push and…

Snick.

Just like that, she was holding the top of the sapling in one hand and lifting it away from its sad little stump. While Jay hugged his severed plant, she frowned at the stump; was that exactly 45 degrees? It looked more like 47 or 48…

She was on to something! That made Esme BEAM.

Feeling happy, she worked on quickly writing down the new definitions before listening as Professor Myers explained the first steps in the grafting process. All she could say was thank Merlin for the diagrams because otherwise she would be totally lost. As it was... she kind of understood? Squinting, she stared at each picture in turn. If she did exactly what was shown she would be okay. Hopefully. You can do this, Esme. You are in tune with nature.

The first question was whether or not she wanted to use the knife or her wand. Despite having used the spell a number of times, it might be better to use the knife since this was her first time grafting and it seemed to be the safer option. Mind made up, she went to collect one.

Now she could get started.

Standing in front of her table, Esme moved the Persian silk - as she thought it was her stock tree - and moved it closer to her. Measuring about three inches above the soil level, she held her knife at a 45˚ angle; in one fluid motion she had sliced through the tree. The process made her feel a little bad, but she knew that this was for the greater good. She placed the top portion off to the side.

Placing her knife halfway up the first cut, she proceeded to make the flap but she wasn't sure if she had done it correctly? She had cut straight back, so she assumed so?

Not sure, she raised her hand. "Professor Myers, have I done this correctly?"

Jaemin watched closely as Julia readied herself for cutting the tree, patting the leaves of his once more before setting it aside. It would be okay for a little while, surely. Professor Myers had just done the same thing, after all... He kept glancing at it though, as if it was going to shrivel up and die immediately without its roots.

He knew better, but it still felt wrong. Poor plant.

Julia did very well with cutting her tree too! Jaemin patted her lightly on the shoulder. Good job, friend!

"Now we gotta do the tongue thing." Probably something nobody expected Song Jaemin to be saying at eleven, but the way it could be taken went right over his head and he centered his attention on his own little stub of a tree again. "It doesn't look hard..."

Just a little tiny clippity clip, so the trees could get together better. Jay picked up his knife again and, after looking up at the diagram the professor had put up, copied the picture as close as he possibly could.

Despite her previous concentration and severity over the angle of the cut, Julia gave a happy little wiggle at Jay’s praise. The rate she was going, she was going to be a professional botanist in no time!

”Right.” As if her tongue agreed and thought that it needed to be a part of the tongue thing, Julia’s tongue poked out the side of her mouth a little as she watched Jay handle his sapling. Thank Merlin he appeared to be following the poster this time; she didn’t think her attention-to-detail-specific nerves could take another deviation.

”Good job, you!” She informed him when it was all said and done, and set about copying him. At least the cut just had to be straight down. Nothing nerve-wracking about that!

Time to finish this part of the lesson was coming to a close, and Ariadne still needed an answer to her question. Feeling like she needed to move on, the first year pulled out her textbook and began to read up on grafting and which trees should go where. In the end, she decided it made the most sense to put the anti-pollutant at the top, and the legume at the bottom. So that meant she would use the bottom of the honey-locust tree and the top of her mahogany tree.

This meant she would start with her honey-locust tree, aka her STOCK TREE. Ariadne didn't have much experience with grafting knives (okay, none at all), but she also wasn't very experienced with diffindo. In the end, she decided she was better off trying the spell than working with the knife. She knelt down next to the pot and lowered her wand to the verrrrry bottom of the part of the tree just above the soil. OH, WAIT. She didn't need to go to the very bottom of it, did she? The professor had said to save at least three inches. Ariadne raised her wand and eyed three inches of plant below her hand. Okay, this was better!

Just in case she was still WAAAAY off, Ariadne eyed the pictures he was showing them. Okay, yes. This was it. SHE HAD IT. There was no turning back now. Ariadne gave a nervous sigh before decided it was now or never. "Diffindo!" she said. She made the whole 'down, up, swoop' motion with her wand then she sliced through the tree at a forty-five degree angle. THAT WAS IT. Did she kill it?! Was it still usable?

Plants READY!

Blaise stood, eyes trained on the Professor as he began his explanation. It was only belatedly that the boy realized it might have made more sense to follow along as the man spoke--as best he could anyway--so the boy grabbed his stock tree (learning new vocabulary every class it seemed) then glanced forward again. Something about cutting it three inches above the soil.

It was a good thing the Gryffindor was still trying to figure out three inches when the Professor mentioned the degree otherwise it was a certainty that the boy would have given it any old cut and would have had to start over again. Now wouldn't THAT be a waste of a perfectly good plant? Just as he thought he'd gotten his measurement right, the man's words threw him through a loop. Diffindo? Magic.....? Blaise's face sunk then, in sullen resignation to the fact this would be the furthest he went in the class but hope was alive! Grafting knives!!

Quick as that, the boy got himself one, the look of relief evident in his expression as he went back to his work area. 45 degrees, smooth, straight, diagonal cut. Just like the Professor said. Yup. He had this.

NEXT! A flap of sorts. Huh. Blaise looked to his little tree, wondering how much he could get away with hacking without massacring beyond flap possibility.

Hmmm....the little boy eyed it for a moment, just trying to judge it, then very carefully he went about cutting the flap. He got done just after the Professor asked if there were questions and instructed them to begin...which...probably meant he wasn't meant to have started when he did but LOOK he was done!

Ariadne just stared at her plant for a minute. It...wasn't dead. It was actually cut the way it was supposed to, and it was just THERE as if it was just waiting on her to hurry up and do the next step. She set aside the top she'd cut off and turned to the part still in the dirt. Now she had to make a tongue. A Herbology tongue, which sounded SUPER weird.

She had this, though! Since she felt a little more confident with diffindo, she'd decided to use it again. She tilted her wand toward the cut she'd made and moved it about halfway up from the bottom of the cut. This time, she double-checked to make sure she wasn't too far down, and NOPE--she wasn't. She was getting AWESOME at this!

"Diffindo!" she said. She moved her wand in the same direction as before and then cut to make the little tongue in the tree. She stood back and surveyed her work. She wasn't sure how right it was, but she had what resembled a little flap in the tree. DONEEEE!

Her arm just flicked a moment, which meant her counter-charm to casting Disillusionment on herself days ago was about to wear off. Again. And then Haddie faded fully from sight. See?

The two plants she was holding seemingly floated themselves back to Haddie's bag and set themselves down. Her bag opened itself and started to shift its contents around until a jet black wand floated out of it, and waved about as Haddie cast the counter charm, again. And Haddie was visible again, a bit annoyed and still completely lost.

….What was that?

Paul saw Hadley...and then….didn’t. He marched over and watched, curiously, as all the things looked like they were floating and moving by themselves. He raised an eyebrow. “Miss...Denaker?” And she was there again! “What in Merlin’s name…?” he asked softly. “Are you sick? because that was just STRANGE.

He skipped (yes, skipped) to the front of the room and cleared his throat. If everyone could listen--I’ll make a QUICK clarification--in case it was not obvious, the LEGUMES, the trees whose roots give off nitrogen to soil are the ones we are cutting right now as our ROOTSTOCKS. The anti-pollutants are our SCIONS! Yes? YES!” he smiled and nodded.

In spite of what the professor had told her, this whole activity just sounded monstrous and cruel. They were making mutant trees... and if they combined two trees into one, that essentially meant the death of one full tree. They were tree murderers.

She waited a long moment, thinking about the professor's question and about whether or not she had the heart for this activity at all. She... didn't know the answer, or didn't think her brain could process it, but she'd do the activity. Maybe it would feel less cruel if she did it?

He grinned. It was so nice to see Blaise try and put effort forth and get a GOOD result. It was positive feedback for the boy, he was sure. "I...well, some Herbologists actually like exact measurements...I typically play it by ear...guestimate...you know?" he said softly. "But it all looks VERY nice, m'boy--so good job!"

And he dreaded the moment when he would announce to the class, later, that there was a spell required for this.

Paul sent a warm smile Dot's way. She looked a little off. Was the Slytherin okay? Did she need bubbles? Paul waved his wand and sent some her way.

There.

BUBBLES FOR EVERYWHERE! Paul skipped around the room making BUBBBBBBBLES float around for a bit...before deciding LOL he needed to make sure everyone was getting on okay.

Oh. Bubbles! That did make her feel a little better, and Dot sent Professor Myers a wavery grin for his troubles. "I just don't want to hurt their feelings," she explained in a quiet voice as she passed to retrieve her trees. A Persian Silk, and a Dadap, just like the Professor was working with, since it seemed easier to follow along if she had similar materials.

"Don't name them. One of them is going to die today," she muttered to herself as she set aside the Dadap, the SCION, and focused on her rootstock tree. Poor baby. "This isn't going to hurt, and you're going to be so much happier when this is over."

Was that true? It felt mean to say so. She measured out the distance on the tiny trunk with her fingers and then used her wand to cut the trunk at an angle. "Diffindo." The top of the tree fell (TIMBER), and Dot caught it and set it aside. That felt all kinds of wrong, but she was just following directions. If it was wrong, it was going on the professor's karma and not hers.

As for the tongue, she preferred to use the cutting tools instead of her wand for such a fine cut. Dot hemmed over the slice for a long minute before she placed her knife on the exposed trunk!guts and sliced the flap very very gently. Peeeeerfect.

Okay..

Azura looked down at her Persian silk tree and patted it softly and in a soft voice whispered "I'm sorry." this seemed a bit cruel, but really it would be for the best! She just has to keep telling herself that!

She stood up and looked down at her little tree and then patted the soil and carefully looked at where she would have to cut! Now.. She took out her wand and said! "Diffindo!" and with that, the little tree was sliced at a 45 degree angle..

Mostly at least! The cut was clean and at an angle!!

The poor tree!!

While Dima was fine with using knives for carving art and things, he wasn't so sure how he felt about using them for grafting and cutting up tree trunks. Perhaps a wand would be best in this scenario? Yeah. He'd stick to a simple severing charm, thanks.

Setting aside his scion, the Dadap tree, Dmitriy focused all his attentions on the Persian Silk. It made him feel better knowing he'd chosen the same plants as Paul, because it would definitely be easier to know if he was messing something up.

Since the professor had said about three inches, he measured the distance up his rootstock's trunk from the soil knuckle to knuckle. Once he'd found the spot, Dima made a little notch in the wood with his fingernail so he'd not lose it and slipped out his wand. "Diffindo!" He slashed the n-like shape with his wand at a 45-degree angle, slicing the top of the tree off just right. Poor tree. Luckily, Paul had said they'd make use of them, so the sixth year didn't have TOO much on his conscience.

He stuck with his wand for the tongue cut as well, slicing halfway up the cut to form the little flap with another, "Diffindo."

And then Dima was done and admiring his work. Mental pat on the back for you, Toussaint. Could celebrate not horribly ruining trees with bubbles.

The whole scion and rootstock thing made perfect sense to him. Perfect sense... or at least, rootstock had been the obvious one and so as far as scion was concerned, it was a convenient case of a process of elimination. Nevertheless, he was clear on the terms.

The process of preparing the rootstock was also fairly straight-forward, though he wasn't about to admit he'd been a little confused about what a forty-five degree angle might look like. Those were details he didn't much care for. Complex. Visually though, the posters helped. He could SEE the angle of the cut, and was confident in his abilities to replicate it. It could be done.

As for whether he would magic the cut or use a grafting knife..... he was tempted for both, but opted to stick with his wand. It was an extension of his arm pretty much. He was comfortable with it.

Pulling his gloves on, Zeke examined his potted Persian Silk before kneeling on one knee in front of it, wand drawn.

Right.

Do this.

Just cut.

Forty-five degree angle.

Yas.

Holding the top part of the branch so it wouldn't fall on him, Zeke identified the three-inch mark above the soil and practiced his wand movement at the slim trunk. Easy. Right. Got it.

"Diffindo!" he cast, severing the top part from the bottom with one clean sweep. Success! He was even rather impressed with his cut, it was sleek and as far as he could tell looked exactly like the posters. Winning. The next part now was the make the flap.

Hehe.

This time it took a little more focus, because OBVIOUSLY this was the more delicate of the two procedures, but eventually he had a nice clean flap-line on his rootstock trunk bit. He supposed this was the joining point for the scion... cause that would make sense. Immense sense.

Eep!

Professor man say what now?

Hady blinked several times as she took all of what Paul had just said and put it down onto the parchment in her own writing. Re-reading it all she slowly began to make sense of what was supposed to happen and how it was meant to be done. Between all her notes and the very large pictures there shouldn't be any mistakes being made here. At least not from her.

Rising to her feet so she would be able to see better as well as have a better angle to cut Hady carefully pulled the small pot containing her Persian Silk tree closer to herself. It really was a fine looking tree it was sad that she had to cut it. At least the parts she cut would be getting used though so that was a plus for this activity.

Removing her wand from it's holster Hady gently but firmly grasped the top branches of her little tree to hold it steady while she made the cut. At right around three inches above the soil she angled her wand hand to as close to a 45 degree angle as one could possibly get. "Diffindo," she spoke clearly guiding the cut all the way through the wood cleanly.

Perfect. It looked like a nice clean cut on just as good of a forty-five degree angle as she would get. Setting the top portion of the tree aside for later she looked back at the pot that held the roots and such going over the next part in her head.

And on they went to the next part of the lesson. Scion, rootstock......got it. Janelle added that information to her notes and then it was time for the main event or part one of the main event. Janelle listened as Professor Myers explained the first step in the grafting process. It sounded hard, like a very delicate process. The cutting had to be precise or.......well Janelle didn't really want to think about the or else.

When given the choice of using Diffindo or a grafting knife to make the cut, Janelle knew what she would do. She could do the diffindo spell, but she wasn't sure that she had the finesse to make as accurate a cut as was needed. Nope, she would have to save diffindo for another exercise. Grafting knife it was then. This whole process was going to be intense, it appeared and Janelle added a few points to her notes as she watched and listened.

When the explanation was over, Janelle went up to get her grafting knife. Returning to her seat, she put the honey locust tree, in front of her and donned her gloves. "OK my little tree. This is going to hurt me, more than it hurts you." Taking the knife in her hand, Janelle mentally measured three inches above the soil. She placed the knife against the plants stem and angled it to what she thought was a 45 degree angle. Then she made a diagonal cut and hoped that it would be satisfactory. Letting out a deep breath, Janelle put the top of her tree aside and prepared for the next harder step.

Jace made a ‘huh’ face at the professor when he heard his answer. Herbologists, as in experts in Herbology contradict themselves, don’t they? Seriously, being an adult is confusing! Jace shrugged, and continued to listen to his teacher.

After scribbling down more notes on his parchment, Jace stood from his seat, and pulled his plants closer to him. He wore his gloves on, got his wand out...and...oh wait. Even if the boy knew how to use the severing charm, he opted not to use it because of that I-stunned-the-Headmistress-by-accident incident that happened a few days ago near the Hag’s tent. Jace immediately placed his wand back in its holster, and instead, borrowed one of the grafting knife that the professor got.

The Ravenclaw watched the demonstration up front, concentrating really hard on the preciseness of the cut, and the amount he needed to cut off. It seemed easy to him so he went off to do his thing.

He got his muggle pencil out, marked it with a 45 degree angle line, three inches above the soil. After making the mark darker with his pencil, he got his grafting knife, and started to cut the top half, following the 45 degree line he made. He placed the top half on the side, picked up his grafting knife again and began to carve the tongue. With the blade going towards him, Jace held the rootstock tightly with his right hand, while he connected his right thumb with his left thumb. He didn’t want to slice his thumb open, no thanks! Instead of pulling the knife toward him, Jace did a slow, rocking motion of his grafting knife from left to right, making a perfect slit within the 45 degree cut. Easy! Tongue done!

Okay! Now that the first cut had been made, Azura gently sat down the top
part of the Persian silk tree that she has cut off and bent down so that she was on the trees level so she could see exactly where she was supposed to me the tongue!

Hmm, she wasn't sure she could make such a small cut with Diffindo! So she moved forward and got a knife and looked at it doubtfully..

Dear Merlin, please don't let her cut herself!!

She carefully took the knife back and placed it in the tree and carefully made a cut.. Yay! She had done it!

Though..

"Ouch!" Her excitement had as usual, led to a lapse in her concentration and she had fumbled the knife and cut her hand with it!

At least it wasn't her nose!

Janelle tried to think positively. She was going to do this grafting correctly and her Frakenplant would be awesome. It was time to make the tongue. Janelle checked her notes first and then the board, to make sure that she had the process right. "Halfway up from the bottom of the cut", Janelle said to herself. Then she found the desired spot and kept her finger on it. Holding the knife in a death grip, she realized it and loosened it a bit.

Taking yet another deep breath, Janelle placed the knife on the stem and made the cut. Going straight back with the knife, she hoped that the flap was good enough. Feeling relief, for the moment, Janelle put her knife down and waited to hear what the next step would be. So far, so good it seemed. Hopefully, she would be able to pull this off successfully.

The first part of the task had been successful. This was good and now Hady had some confidence built up to move onward to the next part. All she had to do was pay attention and keep her focus on what she was doing. Slow and steady was all that she needed to remember.

Looking down at her now cut Persian Silk tree Hady realized her angle would no longer be good this way. Sitting back down on her seat left her eye level with her baby tree which she considered to be perfect. This would able her to make a nice cut and hopefully nothing to deep or wide. A simple little flap tongue like thing was all that was needed. She could handle this with ease.

The fifth year held her wand firmly in her grasp and quietly recited the incantation, "Diffindo," a small cut was started and she very carefully continued. Within just seconds she had a nice little flap on the stem exactly where it should be. Now it didn't appear as picture perfect as the photos showed but Hady was sure this was just fine. Setting her wand down she was ready for the next part of the activity.

With the cutting tool in hand, Tenacius returned to his seat and focused on that nitrogeny plant thing. So just follow the Professor's demo and use the posters as a guide right? Well he's using a cutting tool which he should have better control over. So there he goes doing the slice-y thing at an angle thing. Was it 45 degrees? He didn’t have them angle ruler things so he turned his head this way and that on each side of the now half plant and... Yeah it was slanty enough.

Then he had to do that other thing, cutting the flap. He pressed the cutting tool straight down on the angle, then slowly wiggled the cutting tool off it. Is he doing the right thing? Looks just like the poster.

And then the curly top glanced at what will be the top part of his frankenstein tree. This whole cutting system, its starting to make sense to him now, kinda like his robot toys that he had to assemble and lock pieces in place.

He grabbed hold of the Dadap and lined up the top part with the angled cut of the Persian Silk. Oh boy... This part hes got to get the angle right innit? Otherwise it wont lock into place. He should mark it yeah?
