Default Muggle Studies Lesson Three: How fast can you food?

As you walk into the Muggle Studies classroom for the last lesson of the term, you’ll notice it’s situated exactly as it was in previous classes. The only significant difference is that each table top has a strip of black rubber running the length of it, resembling a conveyor belt. Why the change? Don’t worry, you’ll be finding out soon enough.

Professor Moxley is perched on the edge of her desk, legs swinging and a smile fixed on her face. She’s clearly excited about her last class of the term and you should be too!

So come on in and take a seat, we'll be starting shortly!

OOC: Please be sure to familiarize yourself with Moxley's rules before the lesson and all snitchseeker rules apply!

CLASS HAS ENDED!

Make sure not to post arriving late! Just pretend you've been here all along!

Class Progression:

Greetings and First Question

Last lesson meant a lot of things, you know. It meant that the year was coming to a close and there'd be less homework to do and FINALLY, the summer holidays would be here! It was about time! Jeez! This year had just dragged on, hadn't--

WOAH WOAH WOAH! JUST HOLD THE FREAKING PHONE!

They were talking about FOOD?! Really?

Okay NOW he was paying attention!

Grayson even sat up and everything, his eyes on Moxley and Moxley only. What could they be talking about in today's lesson? Well, that kinda explained the food part. And something else that explained all of this was the huge black conveyor belt type thing that was running across his desk. Even so, he still had a bunch of questions he wanted to ask, especially now tht he was actually interested.

But the most important question here was voiced by one Eden McGee and boy was he glad that she had brought it up. They couldn't not eat while talking about food. How did Moxley expect them to keep their hunger at bay? It was practically impossible, that's what it was.

So where was the food? Dude was starving!

Awh, last lesson for the school year. That was too bad. The fifth year Hufflepuff always did enjoy Moxley and her classes. But she would be back next term, RIGHT? Fingers crossed, yo!

Right. Her uniform. Once more, Adi took a look at it even though he knew which profession she was referring to. It was quite easy to recognise, wasn't it? Well, for the wizarding folks who were into muggle stuff and those who lived among muggles. "Persons who serve food in the fast food industry.'' Food. Adi was feeling slightly hungry now. LOL.

Moxley would be back next year though, riiiight? She'd better be, or the Puffer would have to write a whole long letter to the headmistress, and Norah wasn't really one for letter writing. Or writing in general.

The fourteen year old put her hand in the air even before she'd taken a good look at the Professor's uniform, 'cause she knew stuff about muggles, yep. She'd seen people wearing that stuff when they went on 'road trips' which took FOREVER with gran 'n gramps 'cause they couldn't use floo powder or anything. Shame, really, 'cause 'road trips' seemed like a right old waste of time to her. "People who work with food wear those! But not the kind of food at those places with cloth napkins and shiny silverware; the other kind." She'd only eaten at those places when traveling, really. When they were in a hurry. "Are we gonna get to eat stuff, professor?" That'd be even MORE awesome.

Well the answer was quite obvious and that much was made evident by the number of hands shooting into the air, but for some strange reason Zander raised his hand and without really thinking it through sort of just... Focus, Simon.

He refocused himself on the lesson. What outfit was the Professor wearing? Yes, she was dressed like a staff of a fast food place, like a Macdonalds or Hungry Jacks. As soon as Zander had said burgers, Simon felt his stomach rumble. Yes, burgers would be delicious right now. And french fries too. Mmm.. The boy was making himself hungry just thinking about it. Also...maybe because she was so kind...? Gabe had never gotten a negative vibe from the woman. So...that was less terrifying. Perhaps? Who knew how his brain worked or what he thought half the time.

At this point she was only following the class because it didn't look good to drop something after two years, and she needed to think about this sort of thing if she was going to go to university and excel in everything and eventually become Minister of Magic.

She made an effort to refocus herself when the professor started talking about actual class-related things. But uhhh... what was she wearing, actually? That hideous thing looked like something you'd be forced to wear as the torturous punishment for some horrible crime. What was written on the side of the hat, there? (If you could call that thing a hat). Fatso burger? What in the name of Merlin was that supposed to mean?

"Uhh, food?" Adrienne guessed, going mostly by the word burger on the hat. She hoped the poor woman wasn't losing her mind, deciding voluntarily to look like a clown.

Apparently her outfit had given her away, meaning lots of repetitious answers. She should’ve expected as much, really. Teenagers sure did like to eat! ”Ding, ding, ding, ding!” Meredith called out, ringing an imaginary bell. ”Food is correct! Specifically, the fast food industry!” Well done. Also well done? Some of the responses being given because they had caused the professor to chuckle. The one from the red headed Slytherin keen on giving her fashion advice, in particular. ”Now as Miss Wojack-Gusey pointed out, the uniforms worn aren’t always the most fashion forward but they do have a purpose!” And they weren’t that uncomfortable either which was a huge plus! ”Just imagine how dirty these things get over the course of a day! You don’t want to be wearing a ball gown while flipping burgers! Cheap, easily cleaned, and appropriate. That’s what these uniforms are all about.” PAUSE. ”Also, I think the hats are kind of cute.” Moxley grinned a little and shrugged.

”As for those asking if we’ll be eating today, that really depends on YOU. I can’t say more than that.” WINK! They’d just have to wait for the activity.

”Now whether you’re living in the muggle world or the wizarding one, it’s clear that food is a necessity. We need food to live and many people look to make money off of that fact. The fast food industry is a prime example of that. Before we get into some specifics, can anyone guess why fast food is so popular? Please, just one reason from each of you.”

What exactly did that mean? Whether they would be eating today depended on them... were they going to have a fast food cook off or something and the ones who burnt their foods didn't get to eat? LOL. That would be funnnn. The cook off part, he meant. Obviously.

Yesh! Food was important. VERYYY important. It was legit on of he best things EVER created. Okay, so a reason as to why fast food was that popular. "They are inexpensive, Professor,'' Adi volunteered. Yup, yup.

WHYYYYYYY was fast food important? Well, Toby had probably THE MOST obvious answer to that, which he basically thought of because it would appeal to HIM in his current state. He raised his hand up uP UP INTO THE AIR.

"It's FAST, like in the name. Faster than cooking your own food, usually, because they usually have it ready 'cause they cook tons at once and fast to eat-" if, of course, you ate like Tobias Fuller-Thompson "-Just EAT IT AND GO. Saves loads of time. Just BAM. Done." NOMMED. Y'know?

Man. Toby could totally go for some FRIES right now. Dude. Yeeaaaah.

Glancing around for a moment, Gabriel raised his hand. LE GASP! Banner raising his hand in a LADY PROFESSOR'S lesson?! Was the world coming to an end?!

Shrug. Weirder things had happened.

"It saves time."

Meaning...one wouldn't have to make the food themselves and could do other things. Like...homework...

As an afterthought, they were lucky to have elves for that, Gabe decided. He would've been HOPELESS if he'd been expected to prepare his own meals. It would've taken him much longer than a more skilled person in the kitchen...and it wouldn't have tasted that good.

Hehe, everyone had guessed the answer to the first question correctly. The whole class was a bunch of smart cookies. BEAM.

As the Professor talked about the uniforms, Lux had to agree because if she worked at a fast food restaurant she wouldn't want her nice dresses to be ruined by grease or condiment stains. That would be gross and the plain outfits with the cute little hats was a good idea.

Why was fast food popular?? The redhead had to think on that for a moment because she didn't tend to eat it much though sometimes she ate McDonalds. Mostly she ate food at home or Hogwarts though.

After a moment she raised her hand to answer. "It isn't very expensive. You can get a burger, fries, and drink for a few dollars when you go to Mc'Donalds, but it's more expensive when you go somewhere like my mom's restaurant even if her food is amazing." Just saying. She loved her mom's restaurant.

SMIIIIIIIRK.

That depended on them? Whether they got food or not? Heh. In that case, bring on the food already because he was dead sure that he was gonna complete whatever it is that they needed to complete to get the food. Just saying.

And NO ONE would wear a ball gown while flipping burgers. What in the name of Merlin? Just no.

As for the question, well, he had an answer, alright. And how Moxley reacted to his answer was gonna be a test of how good of a professor she was. So, the boy raised his hand up in the air before saying, "Simple. We, as humans, tend to like the things that are bad for us. There's something enticing about going for something that's bad for you. Something that's forbidden, you know. So, in that sense, fast food places are so popular because fast food is bad for us and we like indulging in things we reaaaaaaally shouldn't be. It tastes better that way."

Annnnnnnnnd SMIRK.

Angel looked at the Professor and smiled as she raised her hand. "Professor, it's simple and easy for a family to go to a fast food restaurants and it's not that expensive. Also with drive thru if your in a rush and don't have time to go into the restaurants." Angel took a small breath before continuing. "There's a lot of fast food restaurants at the edge of motorways or freeways, so that when your are on a long journey you have a place to stop and have something to eat or something to drink." Angel stopped there and waited for the next question.

What Grayson said.

Junkfood does the trick many times, especially if he’s in a bad mood. Aside from the fact that food from such establishment are inexpensive and hassle-free, it somehow gives the hungry person satisfaction immediately. Ethan raised his hand to answer Professor Moxley’s question. “It’s popular because it satisfies the stomach in a short span of time…and you don’t have to act all fancy to eat it.”

He could have phrased his answer better, but maaaaan. FOOD!

Norah grinned at Professor Moxley and giggled along with her, 'cause it was the super duper contagious kind and she'd CAUGHT it. Heh. If it really was up to her then she definitely would be getting to eat food during this lesson 'cause who could turn down food? Especially french fries. Man, those sounded good right about now.

Why was fast food popular? Why wouldn't it be? The third year waved a hand in the air. "'Cause it's made out of unhealthy stuff and unhealthy stuff always tastes the best." Ice cream and french fries and chocolate frogs and EVERYTHING followed that rule. Which was why her mum barely ever let her have any. Sigh. But she didn't know about the Puffer's stash of chocolate frogs under her bed so THERE.

Oh, they were going to be talking about fast food today? Penelope had never really had much fast food, partly because of food allergies, which she did not have to worry about because of antiallergy potions, but also because her mother preferred to have Penelope eat healthier foods. Anyway... back to the question... Why was fast food so popular. "It saves time and money if you are out, and some people don't have time to cook food at home." What were they going to do in class today?

Henric had fast food once in a while back home. He didn't particularly love them or hate them, he was probably in between. He much prefer his mother's homemade cooking more than comfort food. The professor asked them why they were so popular. "Easy..." he thought. He raised his hand and answered,"I think because they're fast to make and not much time require to wait for their food to deliver to them.Everyone who is anyone can enjoy them and they conveniently located in muggle shopping areas. I guess its easily accessible to them."

Dot wiggled happily in her seat when the professor mentioned her by name. And her proper full name. She hadn't actually said the uniform wasn't flattering, though, just that they could do better. They could always do better, or why bother? It was half the fun.

Her fingers itched to wiggle as the professor asked another question, but she just didn't know the answer to this one. Her grandmother was Muggleborn, but they only ate very traditional Polish food with her. And there was nothing cabbage-flavored... Oh. Her hand went up. "Maybe it tastes really good?"

So they might get the chance to eat?? Considering the fact that they were sitting in front of a conveyer-belt looking contraption... Zander figured she meant that they were going to make an assembly line of food... Which meant that everyone had to be on their A-game because Zander was hungry and he wanted to get to eat!!

Of course, knowing Hogwarts... Something was bound to go wrong.

Still with food on his mind, he listened to the question and a couple of the more conventional answers, before lifting his own hand into the air. Of course fast food was made fast. And saved time. And was cheap. But Zander was thinking with his stomach here so this bit HAD to have been expected. "'Cause fast-food places have got the best burgers," yes, he was still stuck on this burger concept.

Kace was pleased he got the answer right. Well of course he got it right I mean he had been to fast food joints before. He lived off of that stuff. His favorite burger joints were Wendy's, McDonald's, Five Guys and Burger King. Just to name a few. Now onto the next question the Professor asked. Well hmmm why did people like fast food. He heard the head puff prefer mention the money issue. Yup spot on because it was dirt cheap but he wanted to think of another idea. He thought about it and raised his hand and offered his answer,

"Professor I think people love fast food because it is not so time consuming and it is especially easier for parents to go with the little kids because some of the places have playgrounds. They can eat and the children can be distracted. I guess it is the best of both worlds. The parents get a break from the kids and the kids have fun.." he shrugged. He remembered his mom couldn't wait to get to McDonalds just so he could leave her alone while he was playing on the playground.

Why is fast food so popular?
..Well it was... fast and quick.

Aaaaand Grayson's answer made Simon almost chuckle. Instead of bursting into laughter, he bit his lip and his facial expression turned into a very odd-looking smirk. It was as if he was half-smiling and half-smirking. Oh mate. He listened to some other students offer some answers before raising his hand to offer one. "Fast food is popular because the food is prepared almost instantaneously which allows people to get to all their various activities that they have to go to," he said with a grin.

Deciding to do a lap, Meredith wandered around the room while the students offered up answers, her expression changing as the responses came in. They seemed to know a lot about the subject matter which wasn’t at all surprising to the brunette. Food was always a tasty topic! Especially if you were a bunch of busy teenagers juggling all that went along with that.

SPOILER!!: Fast!

Merlin, Mr. Fuller-Thompson’s enthusiasm was contagious and Moxley found herself bouncing a bit as she continued to make her way around the room. Talk about a good calf workout! ”Fast, yes!” That was definitely one of the reasons people opted to eat this particular style of food. ”The food can be prepared, received, and eaten extremely quickly! This means that you give yourself more time to do other things on your agenda. It also means that you can sit down and eat at a fast food place in a fairly short amount of time, allowing shop owners to get a lot of customers in and out all day long. Meaning they don’t necessarily have to worry about having an overwhelming amount of seating available!” Which could be good if your restaurant didn’t have a lot of space to begin with. Oh and Mr. Lecium’s answer brought on another way of looking at it. ”For parents who don’t want to bring their young children to a sit-down restaurant for fear of them being-well-children, fast food restaurants seem to be a good compromise.” Given them being in and out quickly.

SPOILER!!: Inexpensive!

Yesh! Food was important. VERYYY important. It was legit on of he best things EVER created. Okay, so a reason as to why fast food was that popular. "They are inexpensive, Professor,'' Adi volunteered. Yup, yup.

This was another extremely good example of why people were so into fast food. Money certainly didn’t grow on trees, so anytime one could save a buck, they tended to go for that option. Unfortunately, sometimes this meant compromising things like overall quality but at least it still tasted good? …Yeah. ”Fast food is inexpensive, yes! This draws many people in, especially young people and those working on a limited income.” Nod. Nod. ”Now there are many reasons for this but one of the most common reasons is that the food cooked is processed and prepared in large quantities at different locations. Then, when it arrives at the stores, it merely needs to be cooked and prepared how the customer prefers it.” Not the best facts to be hearing if you were a fast food lover but it was the truth.

SPOILER!!: Delicious!

Yes. This. Uh-huh. ”Fast food does taste good. So good. And when you can buy something that tastes great and is inexpensive, it’s hard to say no.” Moxley so got this, she did. But the kiddos really should know WHY it tasted good, yes? ”Now I’m not a health teacher so I’m not going to preach to you about good eating habits but I will say that part of the reason the food tastes so good is because of all the sugar, salt, and fat in the different options. It’s not the best kind of food out there, that’s for sure. Fast food should be a sometimes option, not an always one.”

SPOILER!!: Convenient!

”Convenience, yes!” Moxley had made it back to the front of the room again and was nodding her head enthusiastically! She loved when the kids got stuff right because it meant that she didn’t have to tell them they were wrong, thus harming their delicate little egos. She hated to be an ego crusher. ”Fast food restaurants are strategically placed so that people doing errands can easily pop in for a bite after shopping or running into the bank.” Smart people, fast food restaurant franchise owners were. ”They even have drive-throughs where muggle vehicles can come around and order food without even going inside!” Cue the ooh-and-ahhs, yeah? Bit lazy but it was definitely good for people in a hurry. ”Also, food being served is packaged to allow for quick opening and eating. Also convenient. Good.” Consider the Moxinator impressed with the answers so far.

And theeeeeen Mr. Whitlock happened. And Ms. Kittredge, but her answer was adorable, as was she. Mr. Whitlock though, he got raised eyebrows. As big of a crush on Moxley as he may have-let’s all face it, she’s amazing-he needed to be more appropriate! The smirking, seriously? I yi yi.

”It is true that sometimes we enjoy partaking in things that are bad for us, yes. Like eating at a fast food place instead of cooking or skipping a workout to get ice cream instead-“ NOT that Moxley would know anything about that, ahem. ” It’s the whole enjoying what feels good for the moment over doing what’s right-but maybe difficult-in order to do what’s good for us in the long run. Not something we’ll be diving too deep into but it was a good point, you two.” Still squinting at Grayson, Moxley shook her head but then a smile graced her lips as her gaze went from him to Norah. They were thinking, at least.

Moving on….

”Now let’s think about the food in general. Can anyone tell me the options you’d find on a fast food menu? Again, please just give one type.”

Angel raised her hand and looked at the Professor. "At a certain fast food place, they have the Happy Meals for kids, where you get a drink, a toy and some food, maybe a burger." Angel looked at the Professor, she could give the full menu if she wanted it, and even the prices of each items but she would wait and see if the Professor wanted them or if that was enough information.

Kace grinned and was glad the teacher agreed with his answer. He was pleased with himself and treated himself to a little doodling when he was taking notes. I mean he already knew about this being a muggle himself. Now onto the next question. He thought about this one, hmm which options are on the fast food menu. He heard Angel's answer and he agreed with her. He nodded and then raised his hand and said,

"Professor I know there is a dollar menu in fast food restaurants. It is for people who want a little something without having to pay so much for it." I mean he would always use that option and give himself two burgers and only pay 2 bucks for it. It was so easy.

Norah wrote alllll the stuff about fast food down in her notes--in sparkly ink, obviously--in the big loopy letters that happened when she was happy. And you know what else she was? HUNGRY. Most definitely 100% ready to drool type of hungry, even though she'd just eaten. Man, they should just eat in every class from now on. As long as she didn't have to eat any vegetables it sounded like the bestest idea ever.

What's on a fast food menu? YUMMY STUFF, definitely. Like the ice cream that was all swirly, and the ickle fried chicken bitty things. Heh. But obviously the most important one was, "French fries! Like little strips of potato-y things. 'Cept I dunno why they're called 'French' 'cause they don't taste very much like French food..." she paused and shrugged, 'cause even if 'Frites' were similar 'n all that she thought it wasn't the sma ebut who knew for sure. She'd eaten a lot of French food considering the whole half-French thing, but she hadn't eaten everything French just yet. She was working on it, okay? "They're really good, though!" Norah put her hand down and grinned at Professor Moxley some more. Maybe if she smiled enough they'd get to eat sooner.

"Pizza."...because pizza eateries seemed more and more popular in muggle culture these days. Even Gabriel, who tried to eat somewhat healthier due to chemicals in food, couldn't deny it's deliciousness.

It was the cheese. And pepperoni. And crust....Actually, all of it was good; greasy and satisfying. Most definitely one of his comfort foods.

....and this lesson was going to dwindle for him...unless they were allowed to eat SOMETHING. Talking about food...was making his breakfast seem insignificant. A shame...since it had been a LARGE breakfast, too. He'd been unusually hungry that morning. Hard to explain.

Heather had stayed silent for the last question, since she really hadn't had anything to add that hadn't been said already.

This one, however....."Tacos." Mmm. And now she wanted one. Or two. And a slice of pizza...and fries. Wait, what were they talking about again? Food on the brain here, with hunger setting in. Maybe she shouldn't have skipped lunch to study for OWLs, because now she wasn't going to be able to concentrate for the rest of the lesson. Not with all this talking about food stuff.

Sometimes.

Merlin, that’s the hard part right there. Ethan can still remember downing food from such restaurants at great speed when he was still a child, and these fast food chains became some sort of ‘treat’ for him when he’s being a good boy. Hmm. He should definitely ask Simon over the summer to hang out with him at a local pizza place…or a burger joint…Yup!

And an example? Merlin, their professor isn’t helping their stomachs right now.

“Burgers, professor.” He said as he raised his hand to answer Moxley’s question. “…with at least five layers of burger patties…and lots of cheese AND BACON in between.” Ethan grinned and HOPED that they will make one soon. He kinda miss the food-driven lessons from two terms ago.

They were talking about FOOD now, and it made Dot's stomach rumble. She gave it a little sad patpatpat, just to let it know that she was on board with this concern. Lack of food while talking about it was sad times.

But the question was what kind of food showed up on this fast food menu? What was a fast food to make that was also delicious? "Grilled cheese? Or scrambled eggs! Maybe pancakes? They're kind of fast, but they get cold pretty fast. Also, um, professor? If you're a slow crup, I bet you think that rabbits are pretty fast food." Just saying.
