The lesson was moving quite fast, but Beauty didn't mind. She was even enjoying the onslaught of information. So much she didn't personally know, but she was LEARNING, that's all that counted. At the following question her hand shot up into the air. What was great about this question was the variety of answers. It was potions, anything could go wrong so that meant a lot of rules and guidelines. Even the wrong temperature could make an explosion. "You should not alter potions by adding too much or less of something if not instructed. The initial desire might be to make the potion stronger or to knock off a bit of the effect, but it could have disastrous results." Like grow a hand from your nose or worse, make you blind with the inability to ever read again. |
Notes notes notes. Eden jotted down some notes...other things she jotted down were just...random doodles to keep her occupied. Lots of potiony things...lots lots lots... O__O She blinked and looked up. Wait, what did she miss? Right, she was in class...rules of potioneering? "Umm. Well you should follow directions and NOT add random things to your potion. Then you might make things go BOOM." She said with wide eyes. Because she was a stranger to explosions and alll...... |
"Always follow the recipe EXACTLY. Not following the instructions can be very dangerous," Silas said with a smile. Prof Cosgrach was pretty amazing... and so was his class AND ESPECIALLY POTIONS. Man he was always so excited to sit in the Potions Classroom. |
Safety precautions were very important, of course. There was one thing that popped into her mind whenever Jasmine thought about Potions. She wasn't sure that this was what the Professor was looking for, but this was something he always stressed. For this reason, she would mention it. Jasmine raised her hand, and when it was her turn, she spoke. "You should always wash your hands before you begin brewing a potion. Then you should wash your equipment before, during and after you brew." Once you had you potion vanished, you would never forget that. |
It was good that the brown-haired girl called Maddie had mentioned knowing who a potion came from, because Red was stuck otherwise. She really didn't know a thing about making potions. Just soup, and they'd already established that potions weren't soup. What were they, though? That part... very vague. "Never ever accept anything from a stranger, especially hairy ones you meet in the woods. But really any stranger is just bad bad news." |
Never did he take so much notes like this one. Was this lesson inspired by Dante's exploding cauldron? Why the theories all of a sudden? Pausing to open and close his hand, Ethan listened to what the others had to say. Right. Everything has to be clean and such...but...what else? What other precautions should be done before brewing a potion? Hmm. Hand up. "One should assess the potion ingredients that will be used, professor." he said as he placed his hand down. "Some of them should be handled with extra care...like those that explode as soon as it is taken out of the container." Mordred had warned him about those. What was the ingredient again? Exploding mushroom? |
............ His head was definitely hurting, and he could feel himself starting to tune out. Words, lots of them, confused him. What he was able to do though, was copy the notes from the board, and so he did that, which gave him the opportunity to sit quietly and look as if he was doing work. Slow writer he was - or, could be... when he was being careful. Everyone had pretty much said all that he knew about the safety stuff of potion making.. but, yeah.. he could perhaps elaborate on something. "Don't cross contaminate... which is why you need to clean everything all the time." Yep... |
Woah. Okay, okay maybe if he actually read the noticeboard, he would've been more prepared for this. But merlin, it was hard trying to keep up. Yet, Sophie was having a great time. "...Follow all the directions exactly as your Professor says to." Or else bad things will happen. Like that time Zander got yelled at last term, yeah he didn't forget that one either Professor, C. |
Angel looked at the Professor, he had asked her what a Potion couldn't do and if it could do itself there would be no need for a Potions master or Professor right she raised her hand at the next question. "Professor you have to take great care when you are making a potion." |
Boring Boring. So Boring. Ruby did tune in long enough to hear a question though and she put her hand up. "If you need to take a potion that you don't know how to brew properly then you should get someone who does know to brew it for you. Or like, buy it. People are profesionals for a reason." To be honest, Ruby did that for pretty much every potion. No point trying to make something and getting it wrong when there were so many people who could make it perfect. She had better things to do with her time than worry about some slimy ingredient getting under her nails. |
Well of COURSE potions couldn't actually hug you Professor. Wasn't that like, the most common of common sense? Kyroh just blinked a few times, confused, before turning his attention to the red headed Hufflepuff. Had she really expected to be hugged by liquids? ...... A hand was in the air. His hand. High. And it was waving. Safety guidelines. He got this. "Draco Dormiens Nunquam Titillandus." |
Text Cut: A few of you Text Cut: Blackboard 1 "So, I believe we can summarise all in a few phrases," he said, and what he said was added beneath their answers, "One: Know your ingredients. Two: Always clean and inspect your equipment before and after each use. Three: Always cure your cauldron after each use. Four: Pay attention to detail and remember safety precautions! Five: Document everything. Six: Follow the instructions strictly unless you are 200% sure you know what you are doing (i.e. have special training and education in potions). Seven: Do not drink a potion you don't know." He paused for the blackboard and them to catch up with him. "Which can also be summarised as the five C's of potions: Color, concentration, care, cleanliness, and content. Now that we know them, I expect all of you to remember these in the future lessons." He eyed them all in a serious manner. He wasn't joking. He did expect them to remember these and hopefully not make mistakes. Maybe he ought to write them on the blackboard... but if he didn't have any students to yell at, what fun did teaching have? Haha. Not. He'd seriously consider it. "Our next question is about brewing techniques: What kind of an effect do brewing techniques have? For example, stirring a potion in a clockwise direction is used during some stages of potions for potions that enact a positive change. Can you think of anything else?" He was listening, still, kind of. It was really hard to follow and it was hard to know if what he was thinking was right. But, at least, cross contamination had made it onto the board. He'd claim that as a small victory, because that's all he had going for himself this lesson. It was decided. Practicals were the best. All this book learning stuff was.... stupid. Re-inking his quill, Zeke copied down some more of the notes from the board. He found himself writing longer than he found himself sitting and looking or talking. Talking right now was not a priority. Brewing techniques was not among his best topics. In fact, he couldn't account for ANY impacts or effects. Seriously. He just did what was written, he didn't know WHY he needed to do them. Zeke shrugged, then turned slightly in his seat to see if anyone else had something to offer. |
Hmmm... tricky question there. Adi pondered. He wanted to come up with something other than stirring but quite truthfully, and he had a partial answer. He had no idea what that technique did though. Maybe he could bluff his way through the question. The Hufflepuff raised a hand. "Turning off the heat. Erm. Maybe it activates the properties of the ingredients that make the potion what it is.'' |
Ian made sure to note the 5 C's though he had been quite thoroughly taught these by Cosgrach. This had been particularly reinforced early in his potions career. Ian had been rather inept in his skills as a potioneer his second term and Professor Cosfrach had been persistent in his teaching efforts. Ian thought about this and answered hesitantly, the potions take on the characteristics of the brewer. An example was the hate potion which changed, if done properly, to thee particular brewer's favorite color. This is obviously different in most people. Ian had said all that to mean that no two people could brew exactly the same potion. |
What? Who cared? Stirring was stirring, right? Like as long as you stirred the stupid thing what difference did it even make? Was probably a total placebo effect thing, just in the heads of wizards who tried to mystify what was basically cooking with disgusting ingredients. This was sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo tedious. And no, she hadn't even tried to read the board let alone made any attempt to write anything down. |
It was as he sat, listening... that he realised something. He DID have an idea! Suddenly enthused - even if the enthusiasm was limited to bright eyes and a raised hand which waved a little in the air above his head. "Ingredients! Like... the form they come in. If you put in something WHOLE instead of something that's been POWDERED then maybe the properties of the thing will be released slower and if it's powdered it speeds things up, and maybe if it's powdered instead of whole... it's also stronger because more of it can be... reacted to?" It was an idea, an elaborate idea, and one that was likely wrong, but it was all he was able to offer to conversation. |
Hady's hand was starting to cramp up. It seemed she was mostly just taking notes this lesson. By the time she'd catch up with her notes the question was different and she'd be writing again. It was tedious for the small girl but she did not complain or show any sides of tiring at the writing other then setting her quill down and making a fist a few times to flex her fingers. Once more picking up her quill she went back to her detailed notes making sure she had written down everything even if it didn't appear to be important. For the last question she wasn't really sure so she didn't say a word letting everyone reply what they thought. |
Oh? his answer had been right? Feeling proud, Kevin tapped himself on the shoulder as a job well done and then listened again. It was weird that this class went pretty smoothly despite that this was theory. Then again he couldn't really DO anything in theoretical classes...other than finding it boooring. There better be some kind of activity or he was falling asleep. He tried to focus on the answers as well as questions though because he knew that it was important, especially if he wanted to become a potioneer himself. But why so boooring?! Maybe this would become interesting if he was older? He hoped so. Because he couldn't care less about the 5 c's or whatever they were. He only cared about MAKING the potions. And no, still no note taking because he had a good memory Raising his hand in the air, yes he actually raised his hand in the air for the first time, Kevin waved it until he got the attention. "Some potions require wand movements" he said. |
Jasmine gave some thought to the possible effects of brewing techniques on a potion. She had a couple of things in mind, but wasn't one hundred percent sure about either one. Deciding to take a chance, she raised her hand. "Sometimes we wait a certain amount of time after completing a step in the brewing process." Now here was where Jasmine was making a total guess. "Would this allow the ingredients to blend and interact properly and give the potion time to mature when needed?" Did that even make sense? In Jasmine's head it did, but could anyone else understand what she meant? |
Ahh, perfume. Of course. It was a girly thing that AJ took no part in, and now hearing it made her feel dumb for suggesting it. Not all of us girls are into that, so that little part had slipped her mind. AJ was just about to answer the last question when he was coming full force with another one. Dang. Her head was spinning. Catching up on her notes, she bit her quill while trying to think of a good answer. Hmm... Her hand was in the air. "What about the order we put ingredients in? I'm sure you have a reason as to why a unicorn horn has to go in before a bat wing or whatever." If it didn't matter then they wouldn't need steps. He could just throw the ingredient list on the board and they could have at it. |
Sweet Morgana, this was so boring Agatha couldn't keep up. She did rad what was on the board up until... she didn't even remember. Probably her last answer. She had also given up copying everything down. It was just too boring and, to be fair, she didn't care about those things. One just needed to follow the instructions written in books to brew Potions. Agatha had no plans on creating Potions in the future, so she couldn't care less. The Slytherin sat quietly, tapping her quill on the parchment as she absentmindedly stared at the board, not really taking anything in anymore. |
"I don't know, Professor C," Zahra admitted with a little shrug. "This is the part that I always screw up, because why does it matter if I go one way with my stirring or the other? hehe. Or if I stir TWENTY FIVE times instead of ten or whatever. Potions are super picky." Like really. "How about..." Zahra was THINKING SO HARD, trying to come up with something not already said..."....... time.....? Like..... OH HEY HOW ABOUT FULL MOON? Like add it the whatever ingredient at the FULL MOON?" OH MAN WAS THAT RIGHT? ZAHRA WAS A FREAKING SCHOLAR! |
Silas nodded to himself as he watched the blackboard. Most of his classmates were calling out answers he wiukd have given. Sighs. After a moments thought and a serious FROWN at that Kettlebum girl from his own house, he raised his hand. "Sir, the measurement of ingredients needs to be precise or it could change the properties of a potion. I mean... adding three of this and two bunches of that could make a completely different potion." |
