At eight o'clock in the morning, the door to the Second Greenhouse is wide open. You step inside to find that the tables are set differently. Instead of being separately scattered around they are aligned next to each other forming one long table right in the center of the greenhouse. Wooden chairs are also lined on both sides of the tables next to each other. The Professor's table is no where to be seen. But he is standing right at the further end of the tables with his hands on the table and a few feet behind him is a blackboard.
Aside from the different arrangements of the tables you will notice another important thing; there is absolutely nothing on the tables. Look closely around you and you will also see that every other pot is covered and no plant is in sight.
ooc: Lesson will not start for at least another 16 hours! Also, note that there certainly have been a number of lessons before this one.

Hadleigh knew this answer as she removed once when she was about four she kept watering a flower bush out in their garden back home. So clearly to much water could kill a plant or make it sick.
"Over watering a plant could harm it." She answered raising her hand into the air before dropping it back down. Picking up her quill once more Hady went right back to taking notes. She hadn't been able to right them down as she was answering the question, so quill in hand and eyes on the blackboard she copied down what the Professor had put up there.

Wooooop! He wasn't wrong! Of course he wasn't wrong, how could he be wrong when he'd witnessed such things first hand! Duuuhhh. But Professor Walton had a point, knowing something sick was all well and good, so... would they be HEALING stuff today? He kinda hoped so, cause that sounded... cool?
As for what other reasons there were for sickness...

"Diseases?" he asked, his hand raised. Plants got diseases too, right? Things that SPREAD through contact and stuff.

Pinocchio noted this puppetmaster chose not to respond. He shrugged and then heard the next question. He knew this one without help. He raised his hand and did a little dance. Bad dirt! You need good dirt for plants to work.

Information was coming at them full force, but thankfully it wasn't all that confusing. AJ was still taking notes like a good little that she was for the moment. plants lived, and plants died. Got it.
People were already answering the next question, and AJ had to stop and think about something different to add. "If you run over it with a lawn mower like my dad has before, then it's pretty obvious what the problem is." That wasn't necessarily a sickness, but it was equivalent to losing a limb for a human, and would kill a plant. She was a problem solver, she was.

So...plants seem off and one has to determine what's wrong with them. He's never found a flower to seem off. They all look perfectly fine to him. Except the roses. The roses in the Queen's garden had been messed with that one time. If only he could remember why? The Mad Hatter put on a perplexed face and held his head in his hands as he was thinking. A tough thing to do without any tea.
Finally it hit him and the man raised his hand like he had seen the others do. "OOoo...the cards had been ordered to paint them red."
Angel looked at the Professor and raised her hand. "Professor if you attack the plant by trampling on it or playing football on it then it wouldn't be any good." Angel had no idea what else to say so she said the first thing that had come into her head.

Much information. Adi scribbled down stuff while others got to answering the next question. As he wrote, he thought about his own answer. Hmmm...
After a moment he raised his hand. "Viruses, Professor. They can be infected by insects especially.'' There were other ways but insects were the first thing he remembered. Insects were both good and baaad for the plantsies.
Toby couldn't help but look over at those two Gryffindor girls as they mentioned trampling on plants and... running over them with lawnmowers. Just the thought was... no. Just no. That gave him an uncomfortable feeling in his chest. He looked back to Professor Walton and raised his hand.
"If the conditions the plant is kept in are really unsuitable it will get sick, like especially if you've already had one sick plant that died and then planted a new one in the same place that the sick one used to be without doing anything about the conditions."
Toby lowered his hand again and went back to getting all that information down that Walton had been saying, having not finished doing that before offering an answer.
"So now we talked about the first step, which is knowing that there is a problem." He slid his wand back into the holster and turned to look at the students again. "Once we do that, we must try and figure out what caused this problem. Some of you mentioned things about fungi, dehydration and insects which are correct. Anyone has more ideas about what can cause sickness to a plant?"

Kace was glad his answer was right. He was getting right on track with this lesson even though it was 8am. Then he heard the next question and thought about it. He was gonna say the previous answers students mentioned but he thought of another answer. "Professor I know sometimes the climate the plant is in, if it is not suitable it can become deathly ill." So it probably would be classified under like environment. That was something right?
Agatha wished they would move on to the practical part of the lesson already, and she kept looking around to try and see what they would be doing that morning. Hopefully they'd do something and not only be talking the entire lesson like they did in Potions.
Morgana, that had been terrible. Hopefully no trolls would break into the Greenhouses, though.
"Bad chemicals can make plants sicks as well." She said after looking back to the handsome professor.

Walton had STOPPED at her answer, and it didn't seem like she thought her answer to be incorrect or wrong or anything, so Soph actually smiled a little. She did still miss Bentley, but maybe this guy wasn't so bad, especially if she was getting on his good side. A good choice of answer was especially important in ensuring she made a good impression in his mind, she knew.
And she really, really wanted him to be impressed with her.
So, at his next question, Sophie dwelled on it for awhile, trying to think about something SHE knew that other people might not say. Hmmmmmm. Why had her mum's plants gotten sick before? What were some things that went wrong sometimes? What was something that went wrong that her mum had to explain to her better? She thought of something, then, as another student gave input and raised a hand, choosing her words carefully, "There are loads of elements that are really important to plant health, but there's just gotta be the right balance. Like, nitrogen is super important to plants, maybe THE most important element, and deficiencies of it can make the plant sick." But... not JUST deficiencies, right? "Too much of it is a bad thing, too, 'course. The level's gotta be just right."

Jasmine took notes and tried to keep up with the various answers as they were given. So the next question dealt with things that could make a plant sick. That could be a lot of things, as her classmates had begun to mention.
Jasmine raised her hand to add her comments to the conversation. "Not enough water or total lack of water could cause a plant to be sick." Unfortunately, Jasmine had first hand knowledge about that one . She pretty much had experience with all of the bad plant possibilities.

Were they going to be plant doctors today? That was the vibe the Gryffindor was getting from the oh so serious Professor. Needless to say this wouldn't end well. Nope. For as long as Lex had been at Hogwarts, there wasn't a year that a plant or three didn't die thanks to her malpractice. He'd learn this soon enough she supposed so no need for her to tell him.
At the second question, her hand flew up again because, yes, she had an answer and a real good one at that.
"Fire, Professor. Fire does very terrible things to plant and if there's fire involved you can be almost certain the plant won't make it out alive."
There. Now no one could say she never participated in this class due to her dislike of the man. Underestimating her won no favours. He could keep his bloody plants in their stupid greenhouse. Plenty more of those out there in the real world where no one told her she had to prove herself before she got let in.

But for now, he was going to stick with the theoretical. They'll soon get the chance to see for themselves.
"For example; if you see a plant with yellow-ish and limp leaves but with flexible and greenish stems it means the plant can still be healed. Whereas if you see plant with brittle roots and brown stems then the plant is dead and there is nothing you can do about it." Sad but that was LIFE!
Pulling his wand out, Walton walked over to where the blackboard was and tapped it with his wand.

Gabriel flushed at being recognized for his answer and...ducked his head down a bit to focus on his notebook. Lots of information was being provided, anyway....but he didn't write anything just yet. It was more logical to wait for the professor itemized list on the blackboard...so that his notes wouldn't have holes.
...and the next question was already being asked.
Gabe focused on answering...and not on people. It was still a good job the professor was male. "Depends on the plant. Some get sick from their roots being suffocated. Not just suffocated from water...but from soil, too." There was some more blushing.

What causes the sickness in the plants? Well, as the Professor had said, some of them had already given an answer to that in the previous question. Devlin was one of those few people, so he would be keeping quiet. He'd already given the Professor something to work with, and he didn't need any more to add onto.
Besides wasn't there that thing about letting all the other students give their own input? If Devlin said too much than he'd outsmart the rest of the class. He wished. So, yeah, other people can talk.
And that was as much as Devlin could think of at the moment. Until he started paying attention to others answers and realizing he could've said any of those. Not all of them, but one or two he probably would have known if he'd dug into his mind a little deeper.
Was this going to be potions all over again? Notes like craaazy and then a troll would appear and liven things up and try to eat the professor? She thought as she sat there her quill in hand. She hadn’t even really started taking notes, heck, she might just charm it to take the notes for her because really, she didn’t want to take the notes.
Raising her hand though she waited to be called on. “Poor root health could probably be cause of the problems with the plant in general as the root is where the plant gets all of the nutrients from the soul and how it gets it water.” She shrugged her shoulder and tapped her wand against her quill.

Listening to Professor Walton, Lux took notes. This was rather interesting, and it was a benefit since she did not know as much about plants as she did about potions. The last Potions class had been theoretical as well, though the troll visit had been rather interesting. Of course she had hidden under her desk since Bay wasn't there to protect her...
Raising her hand, she said, "Over fertilization isn't good for plants."

Kyroh titled his head to the side and remained quiet as he looked at the Professor. He was suddenly, very much awake. As the next question was asked the boy was still staring, still caught up in the WRONG.
Slowly he raised his hand. "Maybe not enough sunlight?" He paused. "I hope all your plants don't get enough sunlight and get brittle roots and brown stems."
THEN he could be like, HAH you think you can take care of a plant? WRONG.

Thornton turned and looked at Kyroh, eyes wide. If only Thornton could manage legilimency, then maybe Kyroh could hear his thoughts screaming "did you really just say that to a professor?!"
Shaking his head slowly, he turned back to his notes. What could make a plant sick? Classmates had already said most things he could think of: too much water, not enough water, too much sun, being chewed on, hmmm.
Raising his hand, he hesitantly offered his thoughts. "If, there's, uh, something bad in the soil, like chemicals or something, that could kill the plant." Which was probably why his father went on and on about muggles not taking care of things properly.

But man, was it hard not to. Grayson had to force his lips shut and try his very hardest not to look in the direction of or anywhere near Ruby. It was hilarious. His mind did NOT take that in any innocent way whatsoever and he was thoroughly surprised that Walton hadn't made a comment about it. Unless, of course, he was simply that good of an actor.
Still. Lulz.
Taking deep breaths to try and get rid of the laughter and his thoughts. It was easier once the Professor had asked another question, which meant that he could concentrate on something else instead. Uh huh. "Putting them in a small pot and not letting their roots grow can kill them off. You can't keep a gigantic plant with big roots in a tiny pot. That's not how it works."
OOOOH she had been RIGHT! Dorothy grinned at the professor and looked down at her empty basket, giving it a wink. Toto would be proud of her if he was here, uh-huh. More plant questions? BRING 'EM ON! Dorothy waved her hand in the air again. "Plants need certain nutrients to live, not just water. On the farm we use fertilizer to make sure our crops grow. Uncle Henry is in charge of that. So if a plant doesn't have all the nutrients it needs it'll die just like if it doesn't have all the water it needs." ACED IT, whut whut. She tugged on one of her pigtails. More plant questions, yeah?
You see the hard part about plant health is that it did not interest or capture Dante's attention. Sure this guy had the voice to inspire people to do homework and such.
But...nah.
Dante heard the first question. Though about and decided not to answer. He was thinking about climbing trees. More fun. But he did know a answer to the second question.
"Too much water or just fire"
Because then the sickness is death and there is no cure. Not that Dante knew of. Would be awesome if there was

Puck was listening to what everyone was saying and letting her quill take all of her notes for her. Yep, that’s how it was going today. Scratch scratch scratch …scraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat ch…. That was a really long word? No one had said a word with nearly as many syllables as her quill was writing.
She tipped her head into the direction of her quill and raised an eyebrow. She was going to have to see what the feather was saying soon.

Was Freckles doing an experiment? Maddie eyed him curiously and then turned her gaze to the professor. Perhaps her fellow second year was testing to see how quickly the plant-man angered or if he had one of those vein problems. Maddie's brother Vin had that. The vein in his temple would start to get all crazy when he got upset and dramatic and it was really quite interesting to watch. Only a matter of time until his head exploded. Maybe the professor's head would explode too.
She didn't have anything to add to the suggestions already given but she WAS watching closely, eyes darting from the man in charge to one of her best friends. This was going to be good.
