Bright and sunny was the time of morning. The arena looked especially nice with the windows opened all the way, allowing the warm air and rays of light to fill the area. There was no need for an extra cloak or jumper here. The usual purple mats were situated in rows in the middle of the arena, alongside their respective small desks that could pass off as stools. Professor Romanos was currently sitting upon her own burgundy mat in the front as a small mechanical bird with long wire legs sprinted around her with no signs of stopping. Come in! Have a seat! Enjoy the sun.

A cooling spell? Well, the professor wasn’t so precise as to what kind of cooling spell she wanted, but he knows one! Glacius! But…but…almost everyone wrote that down now, yeah? Ethan shifted on his mat as he held on a blank parchment, and twirled his self-inking quill between his fingers thinking.
…
Still think—OOOH. Oooh. There’s one that he mastered with Grayson last term from Transfiguration! He wasn’t so sure about it, but it is associated with the element of ice. Ethan leaned forward as he wrote down his answer in big, bold, letters:
STIRICIDIUM NUBILA
They will be needing clouds for this spell for it to snow, but what the heck. It was worth a shot.

Oh Kyroh had his quill out. But he just stared blankly at the paper. Was he SUPPOSE to know a cooling spell? Why was everyone ELSE writing! He didn't know anything. Over the summer he had forced himself to read the standard book of spells grade two, cover to cover, notes and EVERYTHING. But uh no. No cooling spell.
Dipping his wand in the ink pot he wrote ANYWAYS.

Jonas bit his lip. This is what he got for not paying attention. He sighed frustrated with this whole situation. He decided though, to at least try and take notes. So he looked over to his little desk/stool and was about to grab his quill. Like usual, he wasn't paying attention and knocked over his ink bottle spilling the contents on the stool. He tried to act like he didn't do it but, he knew the professor probably already noticed.

What. They had to write an answer down? And then show people? No way. Ruby WAS thinking of Glacius but rather than do that she sort of held her hand out like it pained her.
Cramp.
Can't write.

With the way that Professor Romanos was speaking, Lux could only assume that they would be learning ice spells today. That was all well and good, but in all honesty this Hufflepuff had enough of freezing temperatures when Hogwarts had turned into an ice cube last term.
But any magic that could be used in defence was important so she would learn this gladly enough. On a piece of paper she wrote down the first ice spell she could think of:
Quote:
Glacius
Holding the parchment in the air, she made sure that everyone would be able to see what she had written down.
Teapot Occamy| gryphons&giraffes&goats,OH MY | chaser of the truth | flutiful❧
Penelope was taking notes on everything Professor Romanos said about fire and ice. If they talked about this for much longer, she was going to run out of space on her parchment. They had to writ an ice or cooling spell now? Getting out fresh parchment, Penelope wrote glacius in large letters on her parchment.
Already taking notes since she didn't have a whole lot of input on the last question, Sophie kept glancing at both Cutty and Tobes, not even realizing she was doing it - she was just keeping an eye on them. Totally normal.
She scribbled down her own theories about surviving without fire and ice, though, and may have grumbled just a little as they were instructed to write something down for everyone to see. She wasn't about that life, especially not when it seemed to be a sort of contest to see who could come up with the most obscure spell - the first spell that came to her mind was Glacius, naturally, but she hesitated, instead peeking around at what others were saying - did that kid put a fire one up? - and peeeered at the people who'd named the ice flower spell they had learned in Transfiguration last term. Hm. Thinking outside of the box there, eh?
......Well.
She didn't want to look stupid and say something way out in left field, so Soph took the safe route this time, sprawled Glacius out on her parchment, and held it up. Fine. Fiiiiine. She could play it safe every once in awhile.
Angel knew her sister would think she was right all the time and being sat next to and having the identical twin connection she could tell she thought she was right this time but then her sister shocked her she didn't write anything down on the parchment... Well that was a bit odd for her sister.
Angel then looked at the door, could she escape before her sister realised? her sister seemed to be in a different world today. She was actually going to take notes, was her sister ill?
Angel in the end decided to write down a spell, she decided that she would play it safe. She thought about writing Iceincludio's but decided that probably wasn't a spell. "GLACIUS.!" Angel then held it up for the Professor to see... see she could play it safe some days.

So, Professor Romanos really wasn't going to acknowledge the odd behavior of the head girl. Okay, then. But didn't she realize that would actually make things worse in the long run?
Anyway, now they were being asked to write down a spell that they knew would produce cold or ice. Most were going with the obvious stuff, like Glacius or Conglacio. Though, some of her classmates had thought outside the box. Heather took her time running through the other spells she knew for one that would work. Once she had it, she quickly wrote it down and held it up for all to see.

He wasn't wrong, though she wasn't saying he was right either.
It was an open theoretical discussion after all.
"Don't get me wrong, I do understand your viewpoint." She bowed her head somewhat to the first year. "Though, for just a moment, since we're on the topic of lack of essential needs, how do you imagine the world if potions were non-existent now since, theoretically, fire no longer exists?"
Would the magical race dwindle? Would the muggles have the upper hand? Would nothing change? Would the magical world and muggle world collide and work together?
Big questions for a youngster.
"Naturally, this is just theoretical views for now, but, perhaps we'll add a question or two on this in our homework from today's lesson." Maybe. Juuuust maybe. Though she was rather pleased with everyone's response!
Checking her watch, she slipped it back into her vest pocket before standing up. "Alright, I'd like each of you to take out your quill and parchment, and write down in large letters... the incantation of one cooling or ice spell you know. It doesn't have to be one that you can actually perform, but just one that you've heard of. When you're done, I'd like you to raise it into the air for us to see. If you can't think of any, please take out your quill and parchment anyhow if you haven't already so you may take notes."
And if they weren't taking notes already...
Oh my. Best make some friends who did.
"Everything," he reiterated, ignoring the fact that she'd called him Mr. Rogers and not Zeke... that would be a battle for another day, but right now, there were things to be said. "Or at least, that's what my sister said, cause Dad's a potioneer, or, he WAS... and so apparently there's a potion for everything. So if there's a potion for everything, wouldn't that mean we would be screwed without them?" Legit counter question right there. Yep. It was all about that thing that smart people spoke of. Supply and demand. If it was there, then it would be used... and people get lazy, so if they were used to it, then they'd be useless without them.
Of course, complicating his ideas with the notion of there being no FIRE and no POTIONS. What would happen? "Uhhhh..." he needed a couple of seconds to consider this, but he DID have thoughts to share. He ALWAYS had thoughts to share. What would the world look like? "It would look less better than it is today," he decided with a nod. "We wouldn't die out or anything, because we have other forms of magic to help us live out lives and create warmth and coolness and meet our needs in other ways, but without fire and potions we couldn't do as much as we do today, it would be harder and people would be sicker AND maybe even poorer." And definitely uglier. Did this lady know how many prettying-up potions there were in the world? Not to get him started on the love stuff.
Already he was liking the sound of this homework. Opinion stuff he could fudge, not that he needed to. He had opinions on most things... just so long as they wouldn't have to read much or do math stuff he's survive.
And now HE was screwed. Cooling or ice spell? HE DIDN'T KNOW ANY........ and he wanted to contribute. Although, he suppooooosssseeeed, that he did know one. Kinda... and so he took out his parchment, ink and quill and did as instructed.

A cooling or ice spell? Think Hadleigh, think. Chewing on her bottom lip she lightly tapped her quill on her desk in thought for a moment. She had seen her father use a few but right now she couldn't think of any.
Sighing softly under her breath she jotted down some more notes pushing the parchment aside when she'd finished. Wait she remember one! Grabbing another black parchment she jotted down the one she'd heard her father telling her mother about a few times. He'd said he had used it when he was younger but he wouldn't tell her on what.

Well well...
Two could play at that game so the Dark Queen folded her arms and gave her most disinterested of looks. She would not be writing incantations she knew on parchment, in fact she would not be taking out parchment to waste on those who didn't have the decency to give her the attention she deserved. Jonas tried with out magic to clean up the ink but with little success. He gave up instead and looked over to see what others were doing. He saw that a girl looked irritated.
"Um...what happened?" He asked her careful not to make her more irritated.
Angry people were not rational most of the time.
This required no thought at all. Maybe Romanos was just trying to get them into lock step with one another. Like a dear leader. Cutty found that admirable and happily oblidged by taking up his quill and scribing down the word:
Glacius
...Onto the middle of his parchment.
His eyes occasionally roamed over to Maleficent and her offended looks. Cutty Cambridge.

Coolio Spellio? Maddie side-eyed Kyroh and raised her eyebrows slightly. She appreciated that his answer was unique but he was aware that this probably wasn't a thing, right? It actually kind of sounded like some kind of wizarding rap artist and the corner of the brunette's mouth twitched upwards as she glanced down at her OWN parchment.

Was Grayson pleased with his answer? Very. Especially since there have been cases supporting his assumption. He kinda wanted to know exactly what else had happened to support this, other than the Ice Age business. Because that was the only example sticking to his head. And the Brits and their constant complaints about the weather.
The weather was freaking annoying, mkay?
ANYWAYS. They had to write an ice spell on their pieces of parchment? Er. EASY. One popped into his mind faster than you can say 'freezing', and it was also one that many people in the class had written down too. Was he gonna go with it? SURE. Why not? Because aside from that, the only other thing he could think of included runes and Romanos had only asked for spells so.............
Scribble...... scribble..... scribble.......

Once he was done scribbling, the fifth year held his piece of parchment up in the air and glanced around again. And that was when he found it. Declan!Duncan's piece of parchment.
DEADPAN.
Oh look at me, I'm Declan and I think I'm ohhhhhhhh so CLEVER. HAR HAR.
No one was going to keep on about the fire and ice thing? They were just going to move on? This was how philosophy got stalled in the first place, yo. Descartes disproved existence and then everyone just IGNORED it, but Hugh wouldn't. Hugh couldn't. The idea of fire without ice or vice versa was far too startling for him.
So he just GAPED at the Professor. Open mouthed and all.
Oh. Crap. Answers. He had to give those.
He scribbled down GLACIUS really fast and waved it in the air.
Done. Now could they get back to the philosophical problem now??

Layla was pretty proud of herself thanks to the response that the Professor had given her. She had valid points, points that others hadn't proposed and she had actually thought outside of the box, scientifically and all. She was good at that in school, the sciences. It was the way that her brain worked anyway. Hence why she listened to scientific reasoning over all this rubbish that the other students were spouting on about.
As for the Professors next question the blonde had absolutely no idea. She glanced around the classroom to look at others answers before scribbling 'Glacius' onto a piece of paper. She had read about it before so technically it wasn't cheating. And it certainly wasn't her fault that she wouldn't know the answer. She held the paper up with a small smile on her face. It had to be right if everyone else said it was..
Urgh, was she the only one getting annoyed by the pathetic student whoever she was that kept talking down at them all. Who did she think she was?! Layla hated those sorts of people, the judging ones. The posh ones who thought because they had money they were all rich and powerful and could control those poorer than themselves. This girl was probably one of them and WHY hadn't she been kicked out of the lesson yet?!
♡ A heart full of Love l ☾ A night bright as Day l
The third year's brain was all over the place as the lesson had been going on. From the discussion of the lesson, to the mention of Ethan being in love with a girl; according to that boy with the accent behind them, to what incantation involving ice she could think of. It was then that she had gotten a little frustrated because she did remember reading about a lot of multiple different ice incantations not too long ago, but because of her unexplained odd emotional feelings messing with her usually quick-minded brain, she just thought of the most common first one that came to mind.
She took a moment to scribble down GLACIUS on her parchment like everyone else in her class & then soon lifted it up above her head as the Professor had instructed them to.
Was he really suppose to know any cooling spells. Dante had his quill out ready to write and nothing was coming to his head. Well this is slightly embarrassing if he is suppose to show the class what he writes down. Well he does think he has an answer of sorts. He sees it a lot in old muggle tv shows he watches when bored.
FREEZE
Like they would get just put up their hands and basically freeze. Kind is like a spell. Though the do have an incentive to put up their hands and not run away.
Still they froze.

Moving around a bit, she flipped over half of her mat to reveal a clipboard and parchment while nodding appriopraitely in a timely manner during the right moments of Zeke's verbal thoughts. "Poorer," she echoed, eyebrows twitching upward somewhat as she made herself comfortable on her mat again, clipboard and parchment in hand. "A rather interesting speculation... and perhaps not so far from the truth either. Excellent thoughts."
Smiling to the lad, she conjured a quill and black ink before making a note on her parchment.
***************
As the students began writing upon their parchments, or taking notes, or faking things to get out of writing ahem...
She took the time to slowly move around the class, glancing around to see who wrote what.

Continuing her way around the class, she nodded and smiled to a few as she passed by, while others had to make her think for a moment to realize what they were trying to achieve or surprise her with their knowledge despite their year.
"Very humorous, Mister Adair," Her smile grew as she passed by.
Although, she had to backtrack a few steps to where Kyroh sat with his parchment in the air. Oh? Re-reading the 'spell', she couldn't help the light chuckle that escaped her. Clever kids. With a wink to the Ravenclaw, she moved on. Dante's didn't seem to lack in the humor department either.
Benny was listening and paying attention, even if he wasn't readily answering. He did as the professor directed and took up a spare bit of parchment, his quill already in hand as he had been absently jotting down things being said into his notes. As for the spell to put down, the Gryffindor paused in thought to try and come up with one in particular to give.
There was the obvious freezing spell but he was digging. Surely there could be something else as the professor's tone made it seem that way. Finally he scribbled down the spell they had done just last term in transfiguration.
It did have to do with ice.
With it written, he raised the parchment up in the air.

Two could play at that game so the Dark Queen folded her arms and gave her most disinterested of looks. She would not be writing incantations she knew on parchment, in fact she would not be taking out parchment to waste on those who didn't have the decency to give her the attention she deserved. The nerve of some people, the utter nerve.
Maleficent would just sit here and shift on her mat, until someone paid her some more attention because this was an INSULT to her character and you did not simply dismiss the Mistress of All Evil.
Filthy Peasants.

Like activity time. Aww.
To top off the bad news, Dima didn't know a single cooling spell.
Embarrassed, the kid shrank into his robes and glanced around at the parchment slips in the air, scribbling furious notes- quite a change from his previously inattentive behavior.

Cooling and ice spells. Um, AJ didn't know about any of those. So instead of writing down an incantation, the lion had her quill ready to take notes. See, she was totally paying attention.
Considering most if not everyone who was going to participate had their parchment in the air, it was easier to see who decided to take notes instead. Or was distracted with other things, such as pained hands?
Or knocked over ink. Oh dear. "Careful, Mister Emery..."
Gold star points for them continuing to be quiet though. Even Alexa was sitting quietly.
Should she be worried?
SPOILER!!: Glacius

Picking up her quill, she began to write the incantation down in large letters.
When she finished writing, Jasmine raised her parchment into the air and looked around to read those of her classmates.

...and really he was only a third year... so he of course onky knew the most basic freezing spell. The one with ice from the wand. Everybody knew it, right?
And with a shaky arm he held his parchment high for everyone to see. Ugh. EVERYONE.

Back to the topic at hand. Fire and Ice.
Could humans survive without either or? The mean head girl had said something interesting--without both, they could live neutrally? Maybe. Eden raised her hand a bit and bit her lip nervously...this was a very THOUGHT provoking class, indeed. "Well, I do think we could survive without either, but it would make existence very hard. Fire and ice had come to be of great convenience for us humans." YEAH. Way to sound SMART, Ed! She wanted to high five herself, but that would just be clapping, now wouldn't it?
NOW. They had to take some parchment out--already had some out, yay. But Eden wasn't sure she knew any icey spells? Was Glacius the freezing spell? Eden didn't know. She wasn't sure. She almost felt like she had made up that spell.
But she wrote it down anyways, in biiiig letters:
"Glacius.."
There. Freezin'.

But he was pretty sure that wasn't what Romanos wanted.
So he wrote down in big letters "Glacius," and looked around, waiting for the rest of the class to continue as he held his answer up.

It was the only one he could think of right now. That done, Adi raised the parchment up. Have a look, everyone.

Angel in the end decided to write down a spell, she decided that she would play it safe. She thought about writing Iceincludio's but decided that probably wasn't a spell. "GLACIUS.!" Angel then held it up for the Professor to see... see she could play it safe some days.

So he just GAPED at the Professor. Open mouthed and all.
Oh. Crap. Answers. He had to give those.
He scribbled down GLACIUS really fast and waved it in the air.
Done. Now could they get back to the philosophical problem now??

Back at the front of the class, she couldn't not be amused at how many of the students decided to go with Glacius for their choice of incantation. A little over half the class from the looks of it. Here she thought Immobulus would've been the choice of spell.
Way to prove her wrong!
"Quite the majority of you decided to choose Glacius," she commented, breaking the silence. "And one Glacius Tria, though I'm rather sure it's pronunciation doesn't sound like a snake, Mister Hazelwood." Pointed amused look. "I think we all had a rather good variety here though. Some very clever responses."
Placing her clipboard upon her mat, the mechanical bird to go from running in circles to hopping excitedly on the parchment. "We will be practicing the Freezing Charm today, as well as discussing it's multiple uses for later lessons and homework so... you may want to pay attention today." More pointed looks. For real. Paying attention was a good thing.
"For those who don't recognize what this is, it's simply the common name used for the incantation 'Glacius'. On the other hand, and I'm glad Mister Hazelwood brought it up, some of use will also be practicing the two other variants of this spell: Glacius Duo and Glacius Tria." Taking out her wand, she wrote the incantations mid-air in front of her in icy blue letters.
"Can anyone tell our students who don't know this spell what it actually does?"
Ah, cool. So his idea wasn't TOTALLY wrong. Nice. Toby smiled at Romanos as she walked past before lowering his parchment again. Made sense that they were using glacius, of course. Still... Toby was better at fire spells than any other, and he hoped that didn't mean he'd find this spell too difficult. But... then again, it might not be so bad if that happened. Thornton had been worried about not getting his magic to work; if he could see that older students struggled too, maybe he'd feel a little less anxious about it all.
But yeah. Glacius. Toby raised his hand.
"Is it one of those multi-purpose spells, Professor? Like, it can conjure ice, but can also freeze stuff that's already there and turn it into ice?" He was phrasing it as a question because... well... he didn't really know. This was half-answer, half-further-enquiry.
NARGLES! |Tree Hugger | Wears a Penguin Suit & Tie | Snape on a Stick
SPOILER!!: discreet professor
One of the very first she noticed being Ian's.
"A cooling or ice spell, Mister Tinker." she spoke softly to not create too much attention, lightly tapping the parchment he held up. It was a wonderful fire charm though! If they had been discussing heat.
Ian heard the professor's comment about his spell and brought it down to glance at it. Hmmm....I suppose I should listen better he thought to himself. He shrugged as she continued to walk around, mouthing a silent thank you to her for not drawing attention to his mistake. He scratched across the incantation and decided to listen for now.
When she returned to the front, he heard her discuss the spell that the majority of students had chosen. Too bad they weren't doing fire spells. He had gotten rather good at incendio. He heard her ask a question about Glacius. He thought a moment, listening to other answers before providing his own response. It's a spell the care of magical creatures professor might find useful for keeping some of his creatures cool. Some creatures don't do well in temperate or jungle environments.

So Glacius was what they were going to be practicing today. Cool. Adi looked up from his book at Professor Romanos as she continued to speak. He had been making a list of the spells his classmates had given but right now he focused on the question then raised his hand.
"It makes ice appear from the caster's wand tip and it can also freeze water.'' Pretty handy spell that was. In a way. Hehe.
