Default Astronomy Lesson 1 :: "Geocide"

FINALLY entering the Astronomy classroom after the 'House Elves at work. Please do not disturb' sign had been removed, you see nothing out of the ordinary other than an especially clean classroom. The desks are arranged in their usual semi circle to help created a more personal and inviting environment. The late afternoon sunlight shines through the windows to give the room an almost heavenly glow.

In the front of the classroom is the professor's desk sitting before a massive chalk board that appears to be empty for the time being. Professor Flamsteed is currently leaning against his desk with his bum while finishing up a comic book he had started while waiting outside the classroom for the elves to finish their work.

Did you remember to use the lint roller on the small table outside of the classroom? It was there next to the sign that reads, "Not to be used as a brush for your hair" and has the signature of a former student in the bottom right corner.

So come on in and have a seat. Class will begin shortly despite the hour delay due to a conflict in house elf cleaning schedules.

Lesson Progression
question 1 :: what does astronomy mean to you and why do we study it? Don't forget your nifty name tag!
question 2 :: can you identify any of these "famous" science fiction figures?
question 3 :: imagine you are an evil mastermind, how would you go about destroying the Earth?
activity 1 :: practice making a planet using the colored bags of "sand" provided
activity 1 :: UPDATE. Optional spellwork and last call to practice
activity 2 :: LET'S DESTROY THE SOLAR SYSTEM!
classroom diagram for the activity

activity 2 :: STANDINGS UPDATE! 1. Hufflepuff 2. Slytherin 3. Ravenclaw 4. Gryffindor
activity 2 :: RULE MODIFICATION. Please read. STANDINGS UPDATE! 1. Gryffindor 2. Ravenclaw 3. Slytherin 4. Hufflepuff
activity 2 :: LAST CALL FOR PARTICIPATION! 1. Slytherin 2. Ravenclaw 3. Gryffindor & Hufflepuff
no more green planets
CLASS DISMISSED! Congratulations Ravenclaw!
OOC: Sorry for the serious delay in starting time, but let's just be glad and thankful for the hard working SnitchSeeker.com techies for fixing the slight server hiccup <3

Please be sure you are familiar with Professor Flamsteed's rules BEFORE you post in this lesson. We will know if you haven't read them! All SnitchSeeker site rules apply.

Class will officially begin in approximately 20 hours from the time of this post.

This lesson has officially started! Please do not announce your character arriving late and just pretend like they have been in class all along. You are free to jump in any time and should use the lesson progression links to keep up.

Okay, this class was moving waaaaaay too fast. Well, Sophie was technically a little behind, but she'd never blame herself. Nope. It was just silly to take the blame yourself when you could just blame other people just as easily. So it was someone else's fault that Sophie had yet to answer the first question.

But she was going to answer one now!

She waved her hand in the air. "I don't know any of those," she said, shaking her head. "That number three looks like the cousin of a thestral, though."

"And could you, Mr. Striker, refrain from wasting paper and tossing it at your classmates?" Although he did have to applaud the boy for his good aim. Just in his head because, well, needed to be professional.

"But sir, it's still the uniform." It was still black and red with the Hogwarts logo. "The seams just needed re-sewing." Bad lie, probably. But he'd convinced himself that was the case so... yes. "Don't you like it? I think it really fits Gryffindor, that's all." He was showing some house pride...

As for the paper. "It's alright sir, he just needed to tell me how attractive I am." ... Yep. He grinned, showing he was actually joking, and leaned back in his chair. Gary totally thought he was attractive. Phoenix knew that. He had solid proof.

AND HE GOT A THUMBS UP. YAY! See? He was awesome.

.........

"LOONEY TOONS!" Phoenix pointed at the first one. But he actually had a really important question, and he figured Airey would be the one to ask. "Professor, why aren't there as many girls as guys in sci fi stuff?" You know, since there was only one on the board?

Important question, okay?

Looking around to see that there were no more hands raised, Airey returned to the standing in front of his desks and tugged on his suit jacket to look a bit more presentable. The desk jumping had given things a slightly disheveled look that he quickly fixed. There. Now he could continue teaching.

"Your textbook defines astronomy as the branch of science which deals with celestial objects, space, and the physical universe as a whole...but as you have heard from your classmates, astronomy is much more than this series of brief words," he said as he began the brief lecture portion of the discussion. "Astronomy is more of an umbrella term wherein there are various subfields of study, and while many may consider it to be more of a modern science...has in fact been around since the dawn of humankind. We all are descended from astronomers and we all have within us, sometimes hidden quite deep, the innate curiosity to look up to the sky and wonder why."

He trailed off at the end for a moment to gaze longingly out the window at the clear blue sky above the grounds. How could anyone NOT want to study that breathtaking sky and what lay beyond it was...baffling to him. Simply baffling.

"But when we study astronomy, we are not only learning about the universe, or universes, we exist in...but we are learning about ourselves as well and seeing how the very atoms that make up our bodies are a part of the grand design that is the universe. Astronomy connects us all."

Alright..that had become a bit more cheesy than he had intended. What was the point of all this? Oh, yes. There was the thought.

OOC: I am SO sorry for the delay guys, but you all gave me so much to respond to so it took more time than I had anticipated! But I wouldn't have it any other way <3 so thank you for your patience.

Class will resume...hopefully in less than 24 hours from the time of this post (more like 19? No promises though!)

Again, interesting classroom. Leaning back in her seat with her deep brown eyes wide as silver dollars, Ophelia watched as the professor JUMPED ONTO A STUDENTS DESK! It almost elicited a giggle out of the smaller girl, though she quickly covered her mouth with her hand to cover it, noticing she was losing her tan. Darn. The firstie would have to spend more time outside. If that was even possible. But it would have to be. Because not being outside was like losing a part of herself. She was a wild one, and the pathways and outside quarters of Hogwarts were her roaming ground. Okay, these animal comparisons were not doing the kid any favors.

And she didn't seem to get into trouble for saying a weird name on her name tag, which by the way was TOTALLY cool. No really. NASA? 'Ophie had wanted to be an astronaut when she was a kid, and even tried to build her tree house up into space before her sister matter-of -factly told her that there was no way this was possible. And if 'Ophie was okay, that was the thing she was going for. Because it sounded soooo much cooler than Ophelia. Ophelia was the name you gave to a high society girl who wore dresses and curled her hair. And the last time she tried to curl her hair, it came out poofier than a poodle. So this girly thing was just NOT going to work out.

Also notes. Should she be scribbling everything down right now? Responses were important, especially if they would help later on in the lesson. And they might be on some kind of exam later in her life, though she doubted astronomy was going to help her become whatever she decided to be after Hogwarts. No offense, Professor, but she wasn't looking to be an astronomer. That just wasn't happening. It involved too much mapping --which she was awful at-- and too much reading --also awful at--. So that career was waaay off the table. But notes. They might be important. Maybe write down the key points? Jotting down whatever seemed most important, Ophelia hoped that her left hand wouldn't make her smear the ink across the page. That was important. Not smearing ink.

Pop culture? Bring it on. Ophelia knew pop culture, heck, her family COLLECTED pop culture..... annnnd she knew like two of these. Apparently they didn't collect the right kind of pop culture for such a job like this. Although, they were only supposed to give one answer, so twirling her hair in thought, Ophelia chose the answer she knew a lot of people were going to choice. It wasn't a personal choice, okay? It was out of nessecity.

"Well, the last one is Darth Vader, in Star Wars. The guy with the breathy voice who needed his mask to live." So... she might have dabbled in Star Wars with her father when she was a kid. He had too many girls so for a while Ophelia was one of the boys, and watching old action and science fiction movies was their thing. It was amazing that she actually remembered that, considering it happened so long ago.

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

Lex. Was. Satisfied.

See that look the Professor was giving her? Her answer was the best. He was at a loss for words because she'd said enough and what she'd said was amazingly true. The Gryffindor leaned back in her seat, beaming at the fact that she'd left the Professor in awe. All in a day's work, you know?

Oh hey wait, these were going back to people for clearance? Well...even if they erased it...they needed to know her name. It was decided. Her name was too important to not be out there even a little soo....."Alexa Cambridge." Nice and clear with a tap she had herself a name tag.

As for the pictures being shown, it was her turn to be speechless but only because she didn't know...like any of them....or well....

"Not sure the name, but my dumbest cousin used to have a small obsession with the characters from the show number 4 came in when he was younger." Contribution to the discussion.

looking at the pictures Professor Flamsteed put out he just stared at it blankly.. he has never seen any of those people or cartoon things before. Looking around it seemed that everyone knew one of these or more.. wow… Bay really needed to get out more. Not daring to put up his hand and totally guess at the question he kept quite and tried not to yawn so his face made a weird movement to try to keep it in.

She couldn't see properly, and since they were invited to look at the pictures, Dot slid out of her seat and made her way up to stand at the board and look each of them over in turn. She was short, okay?

Which... ones... did she know? Some of the animated ones looked familiar to her, especially the girl one with the swishy skirt. And the Death Eater guy with the robes on, she knew him. And Marvin, 'cause of cartoons when she was little. But people already said those. Everyone knew those ones, and she didn't think there was any point to repeating them.

She pointed at the third one, giving it a solid tap to the sternum. "Bowtruckle. Alien bowtruckle. Eat space lice." It was definitely a thing. Dot returned to her seat with her little chin held high.

Caleb was, for a second, seriously concerned that Flamsteed was going to have a brain aneurysm right there in class. He was always just so...HAPPY about astronomy and stuff. How did he DO it? Must have been a Gryffindor thing. In fact, Caleb thought for a moment that Flamsteed really reminded him of his father and his uncle Ben, who were both kind of out there at times (ok, Ben Cobblesten was REALLY out there). They'd probably get along splendidly, all three of them, laughing about stars and curly hair and stuff.

Anyways...did he recognize any of them? Well, sort of. The first one...definitely. The others kind of looking VAGUELY familiar, but he had no idea what any of them were called. He raised his hand, ready to make a guess.

"That first one...he's an alien. I can't remember the name though, I wanna say it starts with....M?" he said. That sounded right, but what the M stood for, he had no clue.

Interesting? His answer was interesting? Huh. Kyroh patted down his name tag again, just making sure it was there so the Professor would remember his name.

While he KNEW about Muggle stuff, he hadn't been Muggle raised at all. Most of his knowledge came from movies and books (comics included). But he could still take a guess right? Kyroh raised his hand. "It's a trick question. They're all the same person in a disguise on Mars."

Leo hadn't really written anything while other people were talking, but he quickly picked up the pen that he kept in his pocket and took notes on the stuff that Airey was saying. It was interesting, and definitely showed his passion for the subject.

"Well the fifth one is Nero, from Star Trek" he commented, actually knowing all of them from growing up a muggleborn.

That was something he knew rather than having to make it up.

Identify one of those characters, well, she wasn't familiar with them--actually, hold the hippogriff. Beverly did recognize that last one. All thanks to Kennedy and Johnathan. How could she forget it when they BOTH had dressed up as the Darth in Halloween a while back.

"I am your father." Raspy voice and all...Oh...she was still in class. Side-eyes. No one heard that, okay? Okay. She raised her hand. "The ninth is the Darth Vader." Merlin. Maybe she should watch the films. Maybe.

Gwen smiled and pointed to the seat for Zeke when he asked if he could sit there. She wouldn't mind having a friend near her in case she had questions...

...and even though Professor Aiery had said her answer was okay...Zeke got 4 points for his. Wow. He was definitely her new Astronomy buddy. Especially if it was going to earn their house lots of points.

Gwen took quick notes as Professor Airey talked on and on and on. Okay. She admitted to zoning out at some point. The little swirly doodles in the corner of her parchment proved that...but she was still partially listening...just not taking the best notes. Hopefully, Zeke was and she could ask to copy them later.

Could she name any of those. Psh. Yes she could. Gwen raised her hand quickly. "I know the first one. That's Marvin Martian. He's from some really old cartoons that are really fun to watch."

Penelope was not focused on identifying science fiction characters. She was just trying to make it through one astronomy lesson alive. Nothing bad had happened to her yet during this lesson, but they hadn't even gotten to the activity yet. None of the characters were familiar to her. Maybe the professor would have a combined lesson with Professor Hadley about muggle science fiction. Listening to other people's answers, Penelope figured out what some of the characters were. Science fiction seemed like it wasn't the sort of thing that should be the main focus of an astronomy lesson, but at least looking at a poster wouldn't hurt her.

Sigh.

Heather was used to people butchering her last name and the professor's pronunciation wasn't even the worst by a mile, but she still felt the need to correct him. Just because he was the professor and this was her name. "-polos. Zan-tho-polos." And that wasn't the last time she was expecting to have to sound her name out, either.

She only had a idea who two of the pictures shown were, but they had already been said. A lot. So she just sat and listened to people explain who the others were and make lame attempts at imitating Darth Vader and his most famous line.

Oh so this class was about comics? She noticed and glanced at the board, sure she recognized some of them but most of the ones that she had recognized had already been brought up and talked about. Though there was one she knew that she knew but she didn't remember his name? Or at least she thought she knew him.

Raising her hand, "Professor correct me if I am wrong but is the second one in, the one wearing the horned helmet thing...is that one of the characters from the Marvels universe?" she asked as she glanced from the board to him. She wasn't the best with this stuff, she'd be better if someone had brought up the Avengers themselves...or Batman she had always loved batman.

"it almost looks as if its an ice-giant but I don't know if it is...and its probably not one, but I'm guessing it would be from the Guardians of the Galaxy universe" she sat back and let her confused features relax a bit as she leaned back in her seat.

The gryffindor simply beamed at Airey. She knew things, and could remember them she was proud of the nod that she had gotten from him. She listened to the others answers, too. She was actually still amazed that this name tag spelled her name right. Bayless could be spelled like Bayliss to that's Vesper spelled hers. Speaking of the super awesome Alumni Cinna was going to have to write to her. She kind of missed her. She would work on that after class.

Was she in Muggle Studies? Seriously this should have been a joint class double the points. Duh. and double the fun.... Two She knew two. That's all. She raised her hand in a Hermione Granger way. "I'll take Marvin Martian. That's number one and no. no. nope. nope. nope AND Darth Vader is the last one, Alex Trebek." Airey did know who Alex Trebek was right.

Bartholomew could hear him? Did that mean he and Maddie were FRIENDS with the squid now? They'd have to go down to the dock another day and check to see. Preferably with TOBY too, 'cause someone needed to bring the crackers.

But knowledgeable as he was on matters regarding the giant squid, his expertise didn't cross over into Astronomy. Dima wasn't familiar with any of the figures that Airey displayed, but he did his best to concentrate on the photos and formulate a good guess anyway. Only... it was really hard. He kept getting DISTRACTED by little things like Kyroh talking about disguises and Mars and Dante doodling a fedora and........

... why was Maddie drawing HANDCUFFS? Was that safe?

"She's right," he decided, wiggling a finger at Dot. "They also eat space fairy eggs. And then they offer the fairy mamas moon cheese rocks as compensation."

After David had tapped his nametag and told it 'David Hensley' as his name, he stuck it on his robes and settled in comfortably to listen as the lesson began and a question was asked. Yeah, this was already loads better than being taught by his uncle at home. Not that there was anything wrong with homeschooling, and his uncle was kinda cool at times, but he found it so much more enjoyable when there were loads of other people there to give all kinds of different answers. He scribbled down a couple notes when he felt like he should, but mostly he just listened to the first question.

And then came the next one, and it seemed even easier than the first. Well, mostly. Obviously there were a few characters he recognized instantly even that Sailor Saturn one because Leah was obsessed with that show, but those were also the ones that others gave answers about, and David really didn't want to repeat anything.

So again he was gonna sit there and listen...but not take notes because this didn't really seem like the sort of thing to take notes on? Maybe for the ones he didn't recognize, but the others, yeah, not necessary.

People knew Astronomy very well. Too much for a young age if you tell me. Or was he slow? Certainly not.

Flamesteel gave a general definition of Astronomy and now Hugo could say that Astronomy was the study of celestial objects. He had no clue what a celestial object was. The first year expected to start using a telescope right away, but instead the professor showed them pictures of Muggle cartoons. Why? Well, at least it was being interesting. One point for you, sir.

He knew two of them. Thank you, mixed blood family. Actually three but two was enough. The boy raised his hand, "The last one is Darth Vader from Star Wars. I like that movie" said with a little excitement."And the white one is Freezer...I think." He was cool too. What does they had to do with Astronomy? Besides the fact that they lived in space.

Woooooot! He had a buddy! This just made it official, she was NEVER getting rid of him now. EVER.

It sucked though, not knowing anything, but he was super impressed that Gwen knew one of them, it was unexpected. But cool. Totally cool. He nudged her with his elbow, she did good.

Yep, nope, he still knew NONE of these character things that were on the board. But, just in case it was super important, he took notes on what his classmates shared in discussion. Inking his Gryffindor red quill, Zeke scratched together a quick list, which was harder than he thought it would be, because spelling weird names was HARD.

Ugh.

SPOILER!!: Notesss

Astronomy Lesson One
with Professor Airey

Astronomy is a science that looks at selestial objects, space, physical universe and wondering WHY? Navigation and space ecosystem too.

Characters from shows and things on the board.

1. Marvin Marshin from Loony Toons
2.
3.
4.
5. Neero from Star Trek
6. Sailor Saturn from ... ??? Sailor Moon???
7.
8.
9. Darth Vayder from Star Wars

And there were so many that he'd either missed or weren't mentioned. Was Astronomy always going to be this hard? He'd started off super well.. until now.

Of course, he was paying attention, SUPER intently now, because this was officially the coolest thing Hogwarts had going for it. NASA name tags and a cool as Head of House/Professor. EPIC.

What was disappointing though, was that he didn't recognise ANY of the images on the board. None at all. What even were they? The last one, number nine, looked VAGUELY familiar, but he couldn't put a name to it. So after feeling SUPER awesome for knowing something, now he just felt SUPER lame for knowing nothing. Failure come at us.

Zeke tapped a finger on his desk idly, hoping a name would come to him... but it didn't, so he just shrugged and waited for others to answer. His nifty red quill was inked and at the ready though, because he WAS going to take notes on this, he was determined to.

But the lesson was starting now.

...

NASA? SERIOUSLY? WAS THIS A JOKE? Maggie stared at the professor with wide eyes. Was this about her? What was he...what....she was tempted to get up and leave. But then again that would be quite embarrassing too. Seeing as she'd probably have to explain herself and she didn't really have something she wanted to SHARE with the class. So instead she just turned the name tag over in her hands a couple of times. No, everything was fine.

Eventually - waaaaaay later than the rest of the class - Maggie finally tapped her wand against the name tag and whispered, "Magdalena Natalie Traulton." There. It had worked. Though it looked a bit crowded now. Oh well. Whatever.

Wow.

Maggie had stopped paying attention after 'your textbook defines'. Instead she'd started drawing stars on her parchment, using the pink glitter ink. Stars though. That was something Astronomy-y, no? Not that she particularly cared. What was UP with these name tags???? She glanced down at hers again. Bleh. Could she throw it out after class? Hopefully.

There was a new question but Maggie just stared at the pictures blankely. The first one looked somewhat familiar. As for the rest she didn't know. She wasn't exactly into science-fiction. OBVIOUSLY.

She dipped her quill in ink and placed it at the top of her parchment, ready to take notes on this "science fiction" thing everyone seemed to know about.

"Kenji Hirase" because he felt like using his real name for once. And to check if the man was going to banish this one as well. AAANYWAYS.... the man started to talk again ..which was boring and he blocked half of it out, until pictures appeared. That caught his interest for once because it didn't have pictures of stars or anything astronomy related. Or so he thought.

He looked at them but he had honestly no clue who was who. But one thing was for sure....ALIENS.

She raised her eyebrows slightly but DID appreciate his well wishes where Benny was concerned. "THANK you, Professor. Me too." Her older brothers should really learn to take ALL the things she said to heart. JUST saying.

Wait, Flamsteed thought the giant squid could hear Dima? The second year itched to tell her f-word to yell again but truth be told, her own ears probably didn't need his voice raised that high again what with them being in such closer proximity. STILL, she wanted to meet that squid. SHE DID.

Also, Astronomy connects us all. Astronomy is the proverbial handcuffs of life, chaining us to one another. Yup, she got it. Very good. Maddie even did a little sketch of handcuffs inscribed with the word Astronomy, her own hand in one cuff and Flamsteed's in another. Connected, they were. Airey had SAID so.

WHO was that girl talking about the people in the photos and their LOOKS, anyway? That wasn't NEARLY as important as their brains and whether or not they were powerful beings. You could be attractive and have a head full of rocks and then you'd be SUNK, probably quite literally if you ever had the misfortune of falling in to the Black Lake. Looks were NICE and all but they weren't most important.

And Maddie only knew a FEW of the names for the photos and THEY had already been said so SHE took notes. Mhm!

Whether she would have wanted to speak up and voice her answer or not as class continued along, Sophie... didn't recognize a single character that Flamsteed was displaying. The extent of her knowledge of Muggle culture went about as far as all things Disney, but stopped there. She had no idea about anything else, but... she was pretty impressed that so many others did. As many rattled off answers, Sophie eyed many of them. Many mentioned a "Star Wars" - wasn't that the thing Flamsteed liked so much? Or... wait... someone else said something about a "Star Trek," too. Merlin.

Well. One of those was definitely the thing the professor liked so much. Made sense that it was part of the lesson, then. Sophie was clueless, though.

Touching. It sounded like something out of a psychology book and aside from the idea of the Big Bang, the Slytherin had no interest in something like that. None whatsoever. He DID, however, pick up his quill and wrote down as much as he remembered from what the Professor had just said about Astronomy.

And those pictures? Grayson furrowed his eyebrows as he tried to make out who exactly they were. The last one was no brainer: Darth Vader, man. The fifth year had even dressed up as him one Halloween many years ago and ended up scaring his brother. Fun times. But one line in particular stuck out to him: Luke, I am your father.

'NNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!'

Lulz. He was happy now. Definitely going to pay rapt attention to this class if they happened to be talking about Darth Vader more. Did he know the others, though? Nah! The first one WAS from Loony Toons, as the girl over there had mentioned. Number three looked freaking creepy, something Grayson actually LIKED. He wanted to say that it was something from that Spanish movie where the girl died in the end but something told him that that wasn't it.

Soooooooooo he was going to sit and wait for the answers to be told so that he could note them all down. Besides, he was currently wondering something ELSE right now. Like whether they were all villains up there. Certainly looked the part and all.

And POINTS too? Toby grinned; it was always a great ego boost to get those couple of unexpected extra points awarded here and there, and the Hufflepuff grinned and watched as Flamsteed leapt back off... and then onto another kids desk. Airey, man. Airey.

Shooting a brief happy look over at Soph, Toby moved his notes back in front of him on his now Airey-free desk and wrote down everything that was being said. Which was. Y'know. A lot.

As for that NEXT question... well. Uhhh... Toby had no idea. He'd never been one for watching TV and movies; always on the move, y'know? Not to say he didn't ever watch ANYTHING... but the limited amount of concentration coupled with a not-great memory made remembering characters and shows from sight near impossible. Except that first one, which he knew to be from Looney Tunes.......... but he was a Toby was a little bit late to that party.

SO no answer from him on this one. He just sat there with Soph, chillin' in silence with his smooth criminal, and steadily noting things down. Still very... still. HUH.

Merlin, thank goodness for magic. Smiling to himself, the fourth year pulled out his wand and took a deep breathe.

Name tag... Part two? "Vaco Reverto!" Another grinned played upon his lips, when he took notice of the vanishing letters. Okay. This time, he was going to get it right. Zander Adair. OR was he supposed to go with just Zander? Or... Sometimes Professor called him Mister Adair... HUH? Which one was he supposed to use? Okay. Okay. "Zander!" and with a tap on the tag, he saw the golden letters appear, spelling his name all properly 'n everything! HA! Now he wouldn't have to worry about the shifty covering thing. That was tough.

Right then, back to reality.

Taking a look at the pictures, Zander just stared and blinked for some time. You'd think that the "muggle-ness" of things would help him finally get something right for once, but... He actually had no idea who any of those people were. Except he did know that they all looked really, really mad. At life. They looked really, really mad at life. Except for the first one, he looked just like Zander felt: Confused.

And also, looking at Kevin, the Gryffindor raised another eyebrow in confusion. Who the heck was Kenji and why was Kevin wearing his nametag?

He did have an awesome daydream in between though. Having to do with giant squids and skateboards though. Pretty awesome.

They looked all mad about something. Maybe they were villains in something. Which would mean they all drove nice cars. Because that is what bad guys do. They drive nice cars and are of course not the nicest people in the world.

Dante started drawing a fedora and suit that his imaginary villain would wear. It looked pretty cool.

Mostly just to let them know that their listening and note taking was equally appreciated.

Was Mr. Hazelwood giving Mr. Mordaunt a look?

Shrugging his shoulders, the astronomer looked towards the first hands being raised and continued with the lesson.

"I bet you were top of your class, sir." Ruby rejoined. He was energetic at least. And she approved of his suit of course. Her eyes glazed over a little at all the talking after that though and she inspected her nails instead. Boring. Right up Gabe's alley though right? She glanced at her brother and then up at the board.

SHE didn't recognize any of the pictures but Ruby DID pick out one common thread so she stuck her hand up again. "Professor, they aren't very attractive." The girl one was okay possibly, for a cartoon, but as usual Ruby's attention skimmed over that in favour of the others. "Is that because space messes up people's bodies? Does it mess up their faces too? The one with the tattoo on his head is okay I guess, but he looks cranky. Some of them look like aliens. They all look kind of moody. Are they the bad guys?" Because it looked like none of them got the girl, or they'd look less grumpy and more smiley.
Entirely missing the point, Airey chuckled and puffed out his chest a bit. He HAD in fact been the top of his class, and he was quite pleased that his persona seemed to exude this. He was quite fond of his academic achievements.

He turned to look at the board again. They weren't all THAT bad, were they? Shrugging off the thought, he instead focused on the more scientific inquiry about how space effects the body. "Space and space travel effect the body quite drastically, but that is not the case for all the beings present here. Several of them are capable of standing in the vacuum of space completely unharmed, unlike the human body which would be totally deprived of oxygen and swell up quite like Veruca Salt from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory did when she turned into a giant blueberry. Any watery surface like your eyes and mouth would freeze over as well."

So, long story short, no...they were not "unattractive" due to space. But an interesting question. Perplexing. But interesting.

"While some are less of a villain than others, and some arguably not at all, yes. They are, for the most part, categorized as villains."

Falling back onto his feet, heels to the ground, and offered a small but encouraging wink.

Hopefully next time he would finish his thought and share his thoughts.

She glanced at the board, taking in all the images before deciding which one to put forward. Her Da had always been a bit of a sci-fi nerd and when her Ma was at work he would often sneak on a programme or too before she came home. That meant Layla became familiar with the characters and with where they were from. She raised her hand.

“The first one.” She pointed towards the guy with the green helmet and the yellow feather. “He’s Marvin the Martian from Looney Tunes” she declared with confidence. That had been one that was on TV when she was younger despite the fact that Layla was not entirely keen. Her brother Bradley, however had enjoyed them to no extent.

She sat back with a small grin on her face, glad that she suddenly felt rather intelligent. See? In some cases being brought up as a muggle was incredibly advantageous.

She continued to enjoy melodrama on the other side of the classroom knowing she would not get involved. Neither would she bring it up in their dorm later. She didn’t get it, why were these Ravenclaw’s a bunch of drama queens sometimes?

Raising her hand, Jasmine figured that she'd just add a little fact to the previous answer. "Number one is Marvin the Martian. He was Bugs Bunny's nemesis in the Looney Toons cartoons." Jasmine knew this because she watched muggle cartoons all the time when she was young. Who was she kidding? She was still a sucker for Bugs Bunny. They were her favorite cartoons.

Anyways...did he recognize any of them? Well, sort of. The first one...definitely. The others kind of looking VAGUELY familiar, but he had no idea what any of them were called. He raised his hand, ready to make a guess.

"That first one...he's an alien. I can't remember the name though, I wanna say it starts with....M?" he said. That sounded right, but what the M stood for, he had no clue.

Giving his wand a flick towards the board so that the name Marvin the Martian appeared in place of the number 1 below the pictures. “Correct,” he nodded towards the semi circle of students - see, it did start with an M, Mr. Newell. “First seen in an episode of Looney Toones titled Haredevil Hare, which aired on July 24, 1948, he is the most comedic personality in our line up.” He gave an approving nod to Mr. Rehman, Miss Valentine, Miss Carrington, Miss Samson, and a salute towards Miss Ackerly before Miss Bayless went on about….Alex Trebek? He threw her an amused expression as he walked passed humming a certain tune to himself before stopping in front of Mr. Sparkly Robes Toros.

And it wasn’t that he disliked the robes per say - although he really was not a fan of sparkle anymore - but more that other professors were not as...relaxed with self expression as he was. Ahem.

And then there was his question (which made him briefly look towards Mr. Scabior) and he took a deep breath before replying. “Unfortunately, it is not on the agenda to go into the history of science fiction - although you are welcome to stop by my office and discuss it with me if you wish - but there are many outstanding female characters and writers in science fiction. In fact, the character Nyota Uhura from Star Trek was revolutionary for many reasons.” Something that they could look up on their own time because he needed to move along.

"it almost looks as if its an ice-giant but I don't know if it is...and its probably not one, but I'm guessing it would be from the Guardians of the Galaxy universe" she sat back and let her confused features relax a bit as she leaned back in her seat.
He smiled, amused at the Gryffindor for her deductive reasoning - even if it wasn’t correct. “Number 2 is in fact from a Marvel universe, but it is not from Guardians of the Galaxy. The picture you see here is actually Unicron from Transformers.

And the name appeared on the board below the picture.

The young girl listened intently as the Professor spoke, his eyes practically sparkling with love. And though she agreed with him, and was rather moved by his speech, she also found it sort of funny in a way, hence the amused smirk.

Name the characters? Oh, that was easy, Justine loved Muggle tv and movies, and most of these figures, were easily recognizable; save that purple thing, she had no clue what that was. *number four is Frieza, from zee anime Dragon Ball Z," Justine said. It had been one of her favorite shows growing up, and she still remembered the Frieza arc particularly well. " 'e was a galactic emperor and 'ad an army... I alvays zought he vas a girl." Justine had never appreciated how annoying her accent could be until she had to say dragon ball z while still sounding Parisian. Unfortunately, it had been just a bit much for even her impressive acting skills and her natural North American accent had slipped out, just a bit, though she doubted anyone would notice, as she'd quickly gone back to being French.

Paloma nodded as Professor Airey had repeated her words, sort of making the mimic to the 'Perfection of the Clashes' as he spoke. Then, she looked around, listening to the great answers her classmates were giving, which made her consider the way she would write her own definition in her notes later when back in her dorm, along with the cute description the professor had given. 'We are all connected' She repeated, mentally, hopefully to include it.

'Muggle telebox'
Hehe. Good and funny term. Would the professor ask for registry rights if she repeated it sometime in the future? 'Let's not guess, pay attention to the class.'

Once the pictures had appeared, Paloma eyed all of them. Sure...she had seen a couple Muggle cartoons, some were from Star Wars, and the others....NO CLUE. The only one she recognized was one, and just because a friend from childhood loved to see those violent cartoons in her TV because at home he wasn't allowed to. She raised her hand, took a deep breath of courage, "Number Four. Ummm...That Gray-White guy, with the circle above his head," She pointed a circle above his head as she spoke, "...his name is Frieza, and he was a villian, a really bad one. And it comes from a Japanese Manga, cartoon...fairly distributed throughout the whole planet." That's what she learned from hanging out with boys...

Alright he needed to do his name again. He understood the professor's instructions and tapped the name tag and said, " Vaco Reverto!" and it was back to normal. He visualized in his head again his name and said it out loud and tapped the name tag. "KACE LECIUM!" There now that looked better. Precisely what his name should look like. After that, he noticed the professor had characters on the board. He grinned and knew two possibly three on the board. But he would say the one he knew.

He raised his hand and said, "Professor in the fourth picture, he is the villain in a show called Dragon Ball Z. His name is Frieza." He actually loved watching that show on his television. He would get up early on saturdays to watch it.

Stellar. There were some familiar with Japanese animation and comics here. He, although he would not admit that, was probably the least familiar with the faces belonging to that genre. “Excellent,” he nodded, trying not to chuckle at Mr. Foster’s response...or give eyes to Miss Cambridge for possibly implying that Dragon Ball was for dumb people. Even if the entire series had been made based on jokes and puns originally.

Oh blast. He had entirely forgotten about his starring contest with Mr. Banner...who was still locking eyes on him. Well, obvious who had won that battle. He offered the Ravenclaw a congratulatory salute before addressing the rest of the class. “Number 4 is indeed Freiza, whose name derives from the katana - one of the Japanese alphabet’s - pronunciation of freezer. As has been mentioned, this character appears in a Japanese cartoon called Dragon Ball Z and also appears in the Dragon Ball comics which were first published one hundred years ago.

He threw quick smiles at Mr. Lecium, Miss Valentine, and Miss Robles - who gave a very accurate description of the character, for the record - and then looked to Miss Janvier and snorted back laughter.

No, I will not be attempting to turn you into aliens,” he mused. “Although, what constitutes as an alien is purely perspective. To the majority of these figures here, were they real, we would be the aliens.” Cue eerie Twilight Zone music? He was tempted to conjure some of it from his own wand, but managed to refrain from doing so.

There was a time and place to burst out into song and right now...well, actually...right now was still appropriate. But no. Not the first lesson. He could restrain himself.

Now for the second question with the pictures on the board, now they were delving into more unfamiliar territory, at least from a wizarding standpoint . However first one and then another caught his attention and the fourth year thought about giving his own guess on the matter.

"I think number 3...and maybe number 7 are from...Star Track," he answered with a touch of hesitance after raising his hand. Granted he wasn't really knowledgable on them or it but Benny had done some digging trying to figure out some of the stuff Professor Flamsteed loved to talk about. AHA! He had found a fellow Trekkie amongst the sea of students. Stellar. Steeeeeeeeeeellar. Airey’s face lit up like a firework at the Ravenclaw’s answer and threw her two thumbs up...only to have his nose wrinkle as she messed up the name of his childhood hero.

Rock. Please. He wasn’t some wrestler. He was a legend!

Very good, Miss Montgomery, Mr. Atreyu, Mr. Stark,” he nodded. “Nero, number 5 in the line up, is a character from the 2009 film simply called Star Trek, which was a reboot of the original series titled Star Trek which debuted in 1966...featuring an alternate reality...or perhaps an alternate universe.” Just to go back to the notion of them all currently living in a multiverse.

Close, Mr. Atreyu. Star Trek and not Star TRACK

Likewise, number 3 is also from the Star Trek universe. A series called Star Trek Voyager and is referred to as Species 8472 and while I suppose they do bear some resemblance to a bowtruckle...or a threstral...I can guarantee that they do not eat fairy eggs.” Endearing sentiments...but no. Hand up! And a little wave too.

Number nine, professor! He’s the most misunderstood baddie in the world of Starwars. His name is Anakin Skywalker, infamously known as Darth Vader. Born as a slave in Tatooine, he grew up to be a very skilled engineer and pilot. He was then discovered by Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn, and was eventually trained to be a Jedi by my favourite knight, Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi.” Pause. He was blabbing, no? But the prefect didn’t care at all. This was his favourite Science Fiction, so everyone else’s answer regarding Starwars was invalid. To him, at least. “He grew up to be the most powerful Jedi, next to Grand Master Yoda, and Anakin was prophesied to bring balance to the Force…which by the way he did at the very end of the trilogy.” Uh…was he missing anything? Well, a lot, but he can only say a few things for now, yes? “Oh and he’s the husband of Padmé Amidala, and the father of Luke and Leia Skywalker.”

Cool stuff.

Yup.

Right you are!” he exclaimed, pointing to each of them. Sweet solstice it seemed like Mr. Mordaunt was quite the Star Wars fan. He gave the prefect an appreciative glance, as well as one to Miss Clarke and Miss Lynch for their contributions as well. They just weren’t as rabid as the Slytherin was. Clearly. There was still hope to get them to appreciate Star Trek over Star Wars. Mr. Mordaunt was clearly a lost cause. “Mr. Mordaunt gave a brief overview of the character Darth Vader.” He gave a quick wink towards Miss Wu….Wuu….Wulfweardsweorth’s direction. Close, very close on the name. “And for those who are fortunate enough to sit near Miss Wayne, you were able to hear an impression of his signature voice and most famous line.” Well, save for that ridiculous NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO at the end of Episode III. “Darth Vader is ranked 3rd by the American Film Institute in the list of greatest movie villains in cinema history and arguably the most iconic in all of science fiction. This character made his screen debut all the way back in 1977.” Which was even before Old Man River had been born, yeah?

He gave Miss Valentine a quick salute as well, being the first to identify the character. As well as one to Mr. Foster.

Well done you lot. Well done indeed to recognize this classic.

Seeing no other raised hands, Airey gave the blackboard another firm tap to make the remaining names appear so that the board now read 'Marvin the Martian, Unicron, Species 8472, Frieza, Nero, Sailor Saturn, Tolian Soran, the Drej, Darth Vader.'

"Just for the record," he said. "Number 8 is from the animated film Titan AE." Pity none of them seemed to have known the 2000 film. Had a soundtrack to it that seemed to be on trend with what young witches and wizards were listening to these days.

"As pointed out, these characters are known for being villains for one reason or the other, but a primary reason they are dubbed as so is because they share an ability in common." One among many likenesses, but just the one he wished to focus on for now. "Each of these characters is capable of destroying an entire planet. Whether this is through magical girl powers like Sailor Saturn, a giant space station like Darth Vader, or physically devouring them like Unicron, they are all a fictional representation of how the Earth could be destroyed."

Such a cheery topic, yeah?

"Some astronomers have jokingly coined the term geocide, meaning the complete annihilation of planet Earth. KABOOM!"

See, Miss Cambridge? KABOOMs were happening today.

"This has been depicted in countless texts and films over the years in multiple end of the world scenarios. So, if you don't mind humoring here for a moment, I want you all to imagine yourselves one of these fictional villains and you have your sights set on destroying the planet." All entirely hypothetical, of course. "How would you go about doing this? How would you demote Earth from being a planet."

Demote from being a planet. HEH. LIKE PLUTO. HEH.

Get over it kids, it wasn't a planet when you were born. It's okay. Find peace. Think about blowing up the Earth and what not. Mmhmm.
OOC: Again, I am terribly sorry for the delay guys. We had a pretty big earthquake in my area (a 5.0) and there was a lot to deal with over here because of it.

Class will resume as soon as I can post again, which will be at least 15 hours from the time of this post. Thank you all for your patience <33

Thornton took excruciatingly detailed notes, though he wondered what in the world this had to do with astronomy. He supposed he'd find out. If he'd learned anything in the corridor, it was that this man had some... unique teaching methods.

He really didn't mean for it to happen, but once the question was asked, Thornton's mouth fell open. What in the what? He was supposed to pretend to be one of the villains on the board and decide how to destroy the earth?? BUT HE DIDN'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THEM.

But he'd already flopped with the last question and if he didn't make good grades in Astronomy, his father would be upset, no matter how much he tried to explain how different it was from looking at star charts or tracking the movement of Mars or anything that they'd done together.

So Thornton thought. And he made a decision as he raised his hand into the air.

"I don't know what any of them would do, Professor," he said by way of explanation. "But I would either look at getting something to the earth's core to cause an implosion, or create a black hole or something," he paused. "Or figure out a way to turn the earth into a magnet for all the space junk that the muggles have left up there."

What an awesome question that was. Adi could totally see himself as one of those villains blowing up a planet. Hehe. Explosions were cool. He cast a look at Benny. The Lion made stuff go BOOM too. Adi secretly hoped his friend would blow up something soon. LOL.

So exactly how would this boy opt for blowing up a planet? Raising his hand, the Hufflepuff said, "I'd use lots and lots and lots of C-4 or PE-4.'' Mhmmm.

................................................. so much information on things he didn't understand!!!!!! He was on the verge of shutting down mentally to save himself the pain that would be the colossal headache to come... but he managed to somehow pull through, filtering out what he figured he could forget and taking notes on the rest.

SPOILER!!: NOTTTTESSS

Astronomy Lesson One
with Professor Airey

Astronomy is a science that looks at selestial objects, space, physical universe and wondering WHY? Navigation and space ecosystem too.

Characters from shows and things on the board.

1. Marvin Marshin from Loony Toons
2. Unicron??? Not Unicorn?
3. Species... 84472?
4.Freeza
5. Neero from Star Trek
6. Sailor Saturn from ... ??? Sailor Moon???
7.Tollian Sorren
8. THE Dreg
9. Darth Vayder from Star Wars

Yeah, he figured they'd do.

In all honesty, he had no idea how any of this had to do with their space ecosystem, but he figured it would all become clear, and so it did... he added GEOCIDE to the list with (destruction/demotion of EARTH) beside it. As for if HE was a mastermind evil dude? ....... how would HE blow up the Earth??? Or well, destroy it.

Zeke raised his hand, maybe a little TOO eagerly. "I would block out the sun. Either by using a giant hovercraft or I'd attract meteorites and asteroids and other human space debris closer to Earth and bind them together to form a giant WALL... and then yeah, block the sun, and while everyone is dealing with the chaos of that, you know when the Earth least expects it, bring the meteor-asteroid-space debris wall crashing down so hard that hopefully it will crush it to pieces and ruin our atmosphere so we no longer have gravity and let the particles float away!!!" ................ could he breathe now? "Or use a laser or something and blow up its core?"

This was a fascinating topic, kudos Professor Airey.

Magical GIRL powers. What was THAT supposed to mean? Like how her brothers went all weak kneed when a girl tossed her hair in front of them? Was THAT a magical GIRL power. Curious, she was. She'd be investigating this further, Flamsteed.

As for imagining herself an evil villain, it wasn't hard. She'd be a ruler some day and she could just as easily be an evil one if she WANTED. She was still sort of figuring THAT part out. But how would she demote the earth, hm?

"Litter. Hire a whole bunch of minions to make the place a dump and destroy the natural environment. If it's no longer livable, it'll lose its cred and Vin's ex girlfriend was ALWAYS going on about how trash was destroying our planet. Maybe she was on to something."

How would she destroy the earth if she were an evil villain? Hady had absolutely no clue what-so-ever. Why would she even think about something like that? Normally she wouldn't but this was a question from the Professor so she would at least think about it.

Hady chewed on her bottom lip in thought. She honestly wasn't sure what she would do but she didn't think she'd be able to do it alone.

Still contemplating on her answer she listened to what everyone else was coming up with as she took down some notes about what she learned so far.
