Default Astronomy Lesson 1 :: "Geocide"

FINALLY entering the Astronomy classroom after the 'House Elves at work. Please do not disturb' sign had been removed, you see nothing out of the ordinary other than an especially clean classroom. The desks are arranged in their usual semi circle to help created a more personal and inviting environment. The late afternoon sunlight shines through the windows to give the room an almost heavenly glow.

In the front of the classroom is the professor's desk sitting before a massive chalk board that appears to be empty for the time being. Professor Flamsteed is currently leaning against his desk with his bum while finishing up a comic book he had started while waiting outside the classroom for the elves to finish their work.

Did you remember to use the lint roller on the small table outside of the classroom? It was there next to the sign that reads, "Not to be used as a brush for your hair" and has the signature of a former student in the bottom right corner.

So come on in and have a seat. Class will begin shortly despite the hour delay due to a conflict in house elf cleaning schedules.

Lesson Progression
question 1 :: what does astronomy mean to you and why do we study it? Don't forget your nifty name tag!
question 2 :: can you identify any of these "famous" science fiction figures?
question 3 :: imagine you are an evil mastermind, how would you go about destroying the Earth?
activity 1 :: practice making a planet using the colored bags of "sand" provided
activity 1 :: UPDATE. Optional spellwork and last call to practice
activity 2 :: LET'S DESTROY THE SOLAR SYSTEM!
classroom diagram for the activity

activity 2 :: STANDINGS UPDATE! 1. Hufflepuff 2. Slytherin 3. Ravenclaw 4. Gryffindor
activity 2 :: RULE MODIFICATION. Please read. STANDINGS UPDATE! 1. Gryffindor 2. Ravenclaw 3. Slytherin 4. Hufflepuff
activity 2 :: LAST CALL FOR PARTICIPATION! 1. Slytherin 2. Ravenclaw 3. Gryffindor & Hufflepuff
no more green planets
CLASS DISMISSED! Congratulations Ravenclaw!
OOC: Sorry for the serious delay in starting time, but let's just be glad and thankful for the hard working SnitchSeeker.com techies for fixing the slight server hiccup <3

Please be sure you are familiar with Professor Flamsteed's rules BEFORE you post in this lesson. We will know if you haven't read them! All SnitchSeeker site rules apply.

Class will officially begin in approximately 20 hours from the time of this post.

This lesson has officially started! Please do not announce your character arriving late and just pretend like they have been in class all along. You are free to jump in any time and should use the lesson progression links to keep up.

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

Samantha studied the pictures for a moment, trying to remember anything about them. The fifth picture looked familiar so she raised her hand and answered, "The fifth picture depicts a character from a film called Star Trek. That character is named...Nero and he was a Romulan captain of a mining ship. He tried to exact revenge on Rock..no, that's wrong, I meant Spock."

Adi was now thinking about aliens. He realllllly wanted to see a real one. How cool would that be? There were always movies and books describing them but it would be awesome to see what they actually looked like.

Anyway...Professor Airey was moving on. Adi studied the characters. Number one jumped put instantly at him because he watched a lot of Looney Tunes. He still did. His hand went up again. "Number one. That's Marvin the Martian.'' He wasn't a big fan of Marvin.

"Good, Miss Lynch. Very good," he nodded towards the Slytherin. Stellar to see a first year contributing.
A smile graced the young girls face when the Professor said that her answer was good. Maybe it wasn't the best idea but she was on the right track here. Sitting up straighter she listened to what the Professor was telling them about Astronomy as she jotted down some notes on a piece of parchment.

Setting her quill down she shifted her gaze onto the photos that were being shown. Taking a moment to look them over she raised her hand into the air. "The last one, number nine. That's Darth Vader from the movie series Star Wars though I do prefer him more back when he was Anakin Skywalker." Hady knew this from watching the popular films with her mother whom was a huge fan of them.

"Astronomy is more of an umbrella term wherein there are various subfields of study, and while many may consider it to be more of a modern science...has in fact been around since the dawn of humankind. We all are descended from astronomers and we all have within us, sometimes hidden quite deep, the innate curiosity to look up to the sky and wonder why."

He trailed off at the end for a moment to gaze longingly out the window at the clear blue sky above the grounds. How could anyone NOT want to study that breathtaking sky and what lay beyond it was...baffling to him. Simply baffling.

"But when we study astronomy, we are not only learning about the universe, or universes, we exist in...but we are learning about ourselves as well and seeing how the very atoms that make up our bodies are a part of the grand design that is the universe. Astronomy connects us all."

Alright..that had become a bit more cheesy than he had intended. What was the point of all this? Oh, yes. There was the thought.

"Now, because universe is ever expanding and many reverse outer space with awe, there is much overlap with the scientific community and pop culture - namely with science fiction." He paused for a moment and gave the blackboard a firm tap to make a series of photographs appear with numbers below them. He PROMISES that there is a reason behind this slight apparently Muggle Studies inspired detour. There was always a method to his madness.

"Can anyone identify any of these characters or the film or muggle telebox series they come from? Please just one per person." If not they were more than welcome to venture a guess or observation about what sort of character they could be.
OOC: I am SO sorry for the delay guys, but you all gave me so much to respond to so it took more time than I had anticipated! But I wouldn't have it any other way <3 so thank you for your patience.

Class will resume...hopefully in less than 24 hours from the time of this post (more like 19? No promises though!)

His eyes may have glazed over, but as soon as he saw the poster up front, Ethan had to contain his excitement as everything blurred before him except for the black figure that was too familiar to the boy.

Merlin, Astronomy’s not so bad after all. Why? SCIENCE. FICTION. Ethan’s thoughts drifted momentarily to the word and concept of Archaeoastronomy, all thanks to last term’s research activity about the Star Temple of Avalon. The boy pushed the thought aside for now, seeing that there was a far more interesting topic presented before them.

Hand up! And a little wave too.

Number nine, professor! He’s the most misunderstood baddie in the world of Starwars. His name is Anakin Skywalker, infamously known as Darth Vader. Born as a slave in Tatooine, he grew up to be a very skilled engineer and pilot. He was then discovered by Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn, and was eventually trained to be a Jedi by my favourite knight, Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi.” Pause. He was blabbing, no? But the prefect didn’t care at all. This was his favourite Science Fiction, so everyone else’s answer regarding Starwars was invalid. To him, at least. “He grew up to be the most powerful Jedi, next to Grand Master Yoda, and Anakin was prophesied to bring balance to the Force…which by the way he did at the very end of the trilogy.” Uh…was he missing anything? Well, a lot, but he can only say a few things for now, yes? “Oh and he’s the husband of Padmé Amidala, and the father of Luke and Leia Skywalker.”

Cool stuff.

Yup.

Thornton sincerely hoped that he never said anything in class so inspiring that would result in a Flamsteed on his desk. His heart leapt into his throat each time the man did it to others, and if it was ever Thornton's turn, he was certain he would die on the spot.

Overhearing how to revert the name tag, Thornton considered his carefully. He followed the conversation and other students answers, and smiled when his received a point. But his eyes kept trailing back to the nametag. Should he try to revert it? Would he be able to manage it? Would whatever he managed next be worse that what he had.

This dilemma was getting terribly distracting. Thornton pushed his nametag under his parchment. Flamsteed hadn't said anything about it, and so he would ignore it.

He squinted at the faces, if one could even call some of them that, and frowned. Science fiction. Something he was sure he would enjoy, if he were ever allowed to enjoy it. Perhaps he could arrange some special dispensation if he parents were to know that it would help his studies to be more well-versed in muggle entertainment...

But he somehow doubted it.

He raised his hand. "Some are... what's the word "animated and some are people. So.. um.." Where was he going with this?

He put his hand down. "nevermind"

Sapphire couldn't help but smile when she heard how Professor Flamsteed pronounced her last name. "Oh well. Not the worst I've heard," she thought, trying to hide her amusement.

She was however, feeling a little anxious. Sapphire hadn't done too well - probably 'not well at all' was the better way of putting it - in Divination. She needed to be good at something, and though she still didn't know whether she liked Astronomy or not, Sapphire hoped she would be much better at it.

What she saw on the blackboard however did not ease her anxious mind. What in the blazing dragons were those things?!

Sapphire looked hard at the pictures and hoped to see something she was even slightly familiar with. She squinted her eyes at the last one. "That looks like something from the movies my uncle loves so much! What was it again...?"

Sapphire took a while to recall it, but the moment she did, her hand shot up. "Professor, I think the ninth one is Dark Vader from Star Wars." Or was it Darth Vader? But that didn't make sense... Dark it is!

SPOILER!!: Airey!

Although he had a THING with the term....stuff. Stuff was rather vague and astronomy was a precise science.

Was that an announcement...or an answer? Airey chuckled at the Gryffindor and nodded his head. Yup. Planets and stars YUP!

Star Trek knowledge common sense? Airey could only dream of a world where that was true. Unless that wasn't what the second year was referring to...in which case it should be common sense. Right? Right.

He gave Mr. Scabior an approving salute before addressing his response.

Which was...an amusing one.

Study astronomy to seem less conceited with ourselves. Some would argue it the other way around, but interesting sentiments nonetheless. "Very interesting thought process," he chuckled. "Very interesting indeed."

And was giving him ideas for a possible extra credit essay topic for homework. HMMMM...

Airey gave the Slytherin prefect a quick wink as his eyes glazed over him. He could see the gears in the young man's head turning. The attentive listening was always appreciated.

Stuff. There was that word again. It should be a forbidden word in his classroom. Stuff. Force students to use proper terminology and stretch their minds.

But the Hufflepuff had an excellent little addition to what Mr. Scabior had said - studying celestial bodies to make humanity seem less egotistical and what not. "Excellent, Miss Kittredge." Especially on the cool and awesome usage.

What was that about being conceited? Heh.

"Perfection of the clashes," he repeated, his blue eyes widening with delight at that particular string of words. "I like that. Very good, Miss Robles"

SPOILER!!: Clara & Eden

The professor didn't have time to respond to the two girl's answers, both excellent for the record, before strange things began happening. Sweet solstice why was it always the Ravenclaw females who...did this sort of thing? Furthermore, why had he not figured out a way to deal with said panicked looks?

Bedside manner of a Vulcan.

Taking a few casual strides towards the pair so as not to draw too much attention, he leaned over just enough to his right - balancing on his right foot with his left hovering slightly in the air - to whisper to them. "Miss McGee, Miss Wilde. You both may be temporarily excused if necessary."

To the ladies room perhaps? Girls still did that, yeah? Go to the loo in small groups.

Stellar. The promise of pogo!

Oh, another very insightful little answer! Airey stopped right where he stood - about the middle of the semi circle - and gave Mr. Tempus a loud golf clap. "STELLAR, Mr. Tempus. Absolutely STELLAR!" He paused just long enough to scurry forward from where he stood to LEAP onto the Hufflepuff's desk. "This is something that the study of astronomy does in so many different ways from human interest level you speak of to the atoms that make up our being. Take 2 points for that answer."

Okay, time to jump off Mr. Tempus' desk.

Also time to try not to laugh at Mr. Adair's name tag. Which he only somewhat succeeded in doing. "Not to worry, Mr. My Name's. Simply give it another tap while saying Vaco Reverto and you can give it another go."

The Gryffindor got two thumbs up for his answer.

Airey gave an appreciative nod towards Miss Carrington. "Some of the most beautiful sights in the universe exist out there in space and it is only through human's curiosity manifested in the study of astronomy that we have discovered them."

Airey threw the Gryffindor a thumbs up for not messing up her name.

And yes, comic talk could certainly happen.

The Slytherin sounded like a science fiction fan in the making - if he was not one already - which earned the first year an enthusiastic grin from the professor.

"Perfectly alright not to know, Mr. Foster. Hopefully by the end of this discussion you will have more of an idea as to why," he winked. After all, there really wasn't just ONE answer to his question.

Airey threw a curious look over his shoulder at the OTHER Ravenclaw girls who were...having their moment...and then back to Miss Wright who...was not.

Merlin help him if all three of them had MOMENTS during this lesson. In which cause he would just pass them off to their prefect. Miss Guidry had been stellar with handling Ravenclaw female angst and drama in the past.

That was...well...that was one way to wear a name tag for certain. Airey couldn't help but stare at her chin for a few moments, utterly confused as to WHY. Merlin, Ravenclaw teenage girls. Just Merlin.

There was that word again, stuff.

Shaking his head to refocus again on her chin the astronomer failed to respond to her answer and instead simply said, "Interesting beard."

..................destinies?

Airey both wanted her to elaborate and not at the same time for fear of the Gryffindor proving his suspicion that she had confused his subject for another. One that was NOT a science by any stretch of the imagination.

"Good, Miss ........... Wolfworesworth," he said, completely butchering her last name. Not on purpose, of course. But butchering it nonetheless. "One must be careful with what one means by....interpret, however. Astrology is not, and never will be, Astronomy for example."

Even if that was not what she had been referring to, still something that needed said because...just no. NOPE.

STUFF!

Alright, that was it. He was fixing his classroom rules to say that stuff was taboo. Oh, maybe he could make it like a little hex of sorts...like how Voldemort had done with his name. Slight modification of the Taboo curse...

The professor tapped his chin thoughtfully and nearly tuned out the rest of her answer. "Ah, yes, good Miss Samson."

Right then, Mr. Zeke it would be. Which would save the astronomer the image of the first year wearing cardigans and singing about it being a lovely day in the neighborhood. Just some classic muggle American television thoughts.

Ahem.

AND LOOK AT THAT STELLAR ANSWER! Save for that very first sentence because Airey also had no idea what the young man meant by that. BUT AN EXCELLENT ANSWER! AND WHEN THE ASTRONUT WAS EXCITED HE...

"NAVIGATION AND ONE GIANT COSMIC ECOSYSTEM!" Wooooooooooo flailing arms above his head as he stood on Mr. Zeke's desk. WOOOOOOOOOOO! "Outstanding, Mr. Zeke. Take 4 points for that answer!"

Still standing on Mr. Zeke's desk, Airey did some dramatic pointing towards Mr. Mordaunt. DRAMATIC pointing. "Outside of magical means. YES! Stellar! Take a point for that."

He was a little sensitive to astronomy being overshadowed by the magically based subjects. MAGIC magic that is. Science was it own variation of magic, after all.

"YES. Good, Mr. Stark," he nodded at the Gryffindor. Yes yes yes.

And he was off Mr. Zeke's desk now, by the way.

Oh, Mr. Mordaunt wasn't done just yet. Airey took a few steps backwards to stand in front of the Slytherin again. "A very good question, Mr. Mordaunt. One that the wizarding community can be divided over at times. Naturally, there are many connections between astronomy and magic. Werewolves being an example, and the influence of the moon on potion brewing - much like it has an influence over the tides. There is also research being done, and students participated in several terms ago, on the effects of solar and lunar eclipses on different categories of spells. To say that science and magic are incompatible is a bit too generic and frankly naive. I strongly believe that as science allows humanity to look back further and further into the creation of the universe, that we may discover the very point in time that the molecules and atoms that made magic possible will be discovered. However, at this point in time this discovery has yet to be made."

His eyes flickered over to Miss Wisteria. Perhaps a discovering that was just over the horizon?

"Take another point, Mr. Mordaunt."

And another essay topic popped into existence. Merlin students made it so easy to assign homework!

"Excellent, Miss Andrews, very well put" he nodded. And no probably about it. It was everything "up there".

And she hadn't used the word stuff. Even better.

Airey was standing just far enough away that he couldn't see that Mr. Baines had made a little oopsie with his name tag, which was probably for the best considering the young man's nerves, he instead BEAMED at his answer and threw him two very excited thumbs up.

"Stellar, Mr. Baines. Well said! Take a point for your thoughts."

"Very good, Miss Valentine," he nodded towards the Ravenclaw. Short and concise, just the way he liked it.

Oh ho ho hooooooo look at her referencing Star Trek right there. Airey's lips curled into a smirk as he gave the prefect a Vulcan salute. "Very good."

JUST studying....JUST? Airey wore a forced pained expression on his face before relaxing and chuckling at the latter half of her response. It was such a human thing to say, going back to what Mr. Scabior had said earlier. How incredibly...human...the notion of being the first was.

"Interesting, Miss Valentine. Very interesting."

"Good, Miss Lynch. Very good," he nodded towards the Slytherin. Stellar to see a first year contributing.

Pity, he wasn't going to get a peek into the second year's mind and how she constituted a comic book reader. What was he going to do with all his natural curiosity NOW!?

Oh, well, listening to her answer was a good place to start. Yes.

Which was certainly an out of the box one. Chuckling loudly, Airey approached her desk and gave it two firm knocks with his knuckles. "Very amusing, Miss Cooper. I hope your brother takes your interest in stargazing to heart." Or something.

And there was that word again. STUFF.

Excellent, a bit too textbook at times, but excellent. Especially what the Ravenclaw was hinting at towards the end. "You raise a very interesting point, Miss Montgomery. For 50 or so years now, astronomers have been toying with the idea that we may in fact live in a multiverse - meaning that the universe we and everything we currently know may be just one of an infinite number of universes. Not a topic we will be diving into today, but a FASCINATING topic of research."

HEH. Well, that was one way to spell the Gryffindor's last name...he supposed. Hopefully she had heard what he had said to Mr. Adair on how to fix the situation.

"Very good, Miss Duchannes. You may even be able to see the Northern Lights from here at Hogwarts if the conditions are right." Which they were...on the rare occasion. Especially if there was a little magic involved.

Ahem.

Students really seemed to be in to aliens this term, hmmmm....he supposed he could tweak things a little....maybe.

"Very good, Mr. Rehman."

"Excellent, Miss Valentine," he nodded. And not just because she had quoted Star Trek. Ahem.

The unknown. It was quite an ominous term, wasn't it? Ominous but spot on at the same time. He gave the Hufflepuff prefect an appreciative salute before moving on to the next raised hand.

Airey was.............................flabbergasted. And perhaps a little in awe. And may have looked a bit sparkly eyed with his chest puffed out in admiration if he were the sentimental sort. The reality was, however, that he just stood there in front of the Head Girl for a good solid minute in complete awe at the words that had just been spoken. Not just the words, but the VOLUME of words that had just been spoken. He quite literally was speechless, in a good way, and found that he only could speak when she mentioned the name tag.

"HUH?" he said, mouth still hanging open slightly. "OH. That. No, I suppose it is not mandatory, just be sure not to lose it because I will be needing to send those off to a colleague of mine for security clearance."

The vein in Airey's forehead was definitely starting to bulge now. STUFF.

"Good, Mr. Newell. Good good good. Big and ever expanding!"
STUFF

SPOILER!!: Phoenix & Gary XD

Airey was....distracted when his eyes fell on Mr. Toros' robes. How in Merlin's soggy socks had he not noticed the...adjustments before? It was...well....it wasn't BAD per say, but uniforms were UNIform for a reason. Imagine if astronauts had decided to customize their spacesuits! Sweet solstice the disasters that could occur...

"Mr. Toros...while I always wish to encourage the art of self expression, perhaps you could refrain from doing so with the very threads of your uniform?" Just then, a ball of parchment came out of no where and got stuck right in the boy's mass of hair. 3 POINT SHOT!

"And could you, Mr. Striker, refrain from wasting paper and tossing it at your classmates?" Although he did have to applaud the boy for his good aim. Just in his head because, well, needed to be professional.

And Mr. Toros' answer was as sparkly as his robes. So thumbs up to you, good sir!

"Give it another tap and say Vaco Reverto to return it to its original state. As long as you visualize your name clearly in your mind, it should appear correct." If it didn't well, oops? Let it be a lesson to the astronomer to not save galleons on the cheaper magical name tags next time?

He gave a small nod to Mr. Lecium's answer. Mmmhmmm, Astronomy was a stellar teaching tool. Heh.

Airey...was VERY intrigued by this one. And not just the answer, but the student behind the answer. Very inquisitive and with the out of the box sort of thinking he appreciated. Not to mention she had said Picard was the best. Obviously a great head on her shoulders.

"Excellent, Miss Wojack. I too have always thought that astronomy encouraged human curiosity and the desire to know more." Something that he hoped his own teaching method reflected.

In all honesty, Airey was expecting a bit more from the seventh year. Or at least an answer that did not have the inflection of uncertainty. He gave the boy a curt nod and wondered if perhaps he was getting enough sleep.

"Very good, Miss Wayne," he applauded the prefect with a grin. Another student to touch on the nature of human curiosity. It did his heart good to hear that.

That was...not a name he was going to call the Slytherin. For the record.

Airey simply raised an eyebrow and cleared his throat before responding to his answer. And chuckled. "It is indeed. Thank you, Mr. Barrington."

"Insightful, Mr. Whitlock," he nodded. Also a very Slytherin sounded answer if one were to read into it a bit.

Oh, er, staring contest in the middle of a lesson? Airey could play...he supposed. As long as no other students voiced that they felt they were being ignored because he was only locking eyes with the Ravenclaw.

"Yes," he replied, using few words as well and eyes widening as the staring contest began.

Definitely still engaged in his staring contest with Mr. Banner, Airey caught the Hufflepuff out of the corner of his eye and raised his index finger to wiggle in the air. "Excellent, but without the sit next time."

STARE.

He caught Miss Brown out of the corner of his eye as well, busy scribbling away on her parchment. Attentive listening and note taking was always appreciated, but he had to admit that he was just the tiniest bit disappointed not to hear her answer. They were always interesting and insightful.

............stuff. Sweet solstice.

The smidge comment, however, made him smirk. Because it was actually all of them that had a smidge of the universe within each of them.

"Thank you, Mr. Kim."

Okay....accent....he could do this. Even if he SWORE that her accent had slipped every now and then during the field trip...which confused him greatly. Hanging on her every word, he nodded slowly and smiled. "Very good, Miss Janvier."

The astronomer nodded at the Gryffindor, although he personally felt that 'night sky' was a bit narrow minded to be applied to astronomy. But still a good answer. "Thank you, Mr. Atreyu."

Note taking. Stellar. He saluted the Ravenclaw before moving along to the next raised hand.

"We will certainly be using a lot of Physics in this classroom," he nodded. Perhaps dive into a little of it today, although today's lesson was a little bit more opened minded and not as SCIENCE centric as previous terms had been.

Oh sweet solstice!

"I believe they heard you all the way down at the lake, Mr. Toussaint. Including Bartholomew."

He pointed excitedly at the Hufflepuff. "Precisely why we took a field trip to Greece," he said while bouncing in place. Well, that and Airey really just wanted to go to the beaches there, but that was the unofficial reason that he only really disclosed to Medea. "Thank you, Miss Aldrich."

Figuring her fingers must have fallen asleep, hence the finger wiggling - terrible feeling, but at least it wasn't her leg - he gave a small nod towards the young lady. "Which means I have a doctorate in romance," he laughed....at his own horrible joke.

Yep. Professor Flamsteed. Doctor of Romance and smooth as chunky peanut butter.

"Very good, Miss...." small pause before he attempted her name. "...Zanthapoulas." That was close...yeah? These long names...Merlin.

Airey just sighed when he heard the shout. Without even saying another word, the astronomer BANISHED the name tag and summoned another. "Again, Mr. Hirase." In the past the astronomer hadn't been as short with the young man, but he wasn't a first year anymore and should know better. Third year and all...third time's the charm? Although the Gryffindor should know by now to not to shout and draw attention to something he was doing wrong.

A smirk then spread across the man's face at the answer the third year had given. But that was all that was done in reply. A smirk. Heh.

*****

Looking around to see that there were no more hands raised, Airey returned to the standing in front of his desks and tugged on his suit jacket to look a bit more presentable. The desk jumping had given things a slightly disheveled look that he quickly fixed. There. Now he could continue teaching.

"Your textbook defines astronomy as the branch of science which deals with celestial objects, space, and the physical universe as a whole...but as you have heard from your classmates, astronomy is much more than this series of brief words," he said as he began the brief lecture portion of the discussion.

So Clara was freaking out, Eden didn't know what to do--YIKES--she just eyed her friend...and then the professor came over--OH NO WERE THEY GOING TO GET IN TROUBLE?! Eden winced a lot--but then--oh. He was being nice! Eden smiled up at him and just patted Clara--"Clara--you can go, and I'll meet you after class? OR I can leave--" she didn't want to leave, but she WOULD for Clara, OKAY?

Hmph.

And then he was starting the lesson--okay--Eden kept her hand on Clara's back but listened...a little. Astronomy--space--whooh. She scribbled down what Astronomy was--and everything else he said that SOUNDED remotely important, and she looked up at the little pictures--WOW EDEN KNEW ALMOST ALL OF THEM. Almost. Darth Vader seemed to be a popular answer--she was all SMUG. Thank MERLIN for having a muggle mother, eh?

She raised her hand slowly--and was about to name number six, Sailor Saturn...But some OTHER girl got it--She shot the girl a wide grin. WOW SHE KNEW IT TOO?! "Sailor Saturn, yes--number six--like she said--" she grinned and tucked her hair behind her ear. She hadn't watched or read that series in FOREVER. And that girl.....Eden was now staring intently at her. Why did he pick, like, the least known sailor girl, eh? Eden was all for Sailor Jupiter.

SHE HAD TO BE COOL.

Norah grinned at the professor's appreciation of her answer. Take THAT everyone! She could do stuff! The grin faded, however, at the next question. Uh. Was she supposed to spend her time reading muggle stories? She didn't even spend her time reading wizard stories. Well, except for Beedle the Bard, but that was necessary to life. She dipped her quill in ink and placed it at the top of her parchment, ready to take notes on this "science fiction" thing everyone seemed to know about.

Her answer was interesting? Did that mean that the professor had an alien hiding somewhere and they were going to have an entire activity on trying to communicate with it and found out about where it lives? Because AJ would be down... so down!!!

She listened to him go on FOREVER about universe stuff, and looked at the pictured that appeared before her very eyes. "Looney Tunes," she blurted out. "The first picture I mean is from Looney Tunes." She wasn't sure about the others.

Angel looked at the Professor and raised her hand she thought she might know one or two others but she decided to play it safe, she thought one might be off star gate but she wasn't going to risk it. "Professor I'll play it safe and say that number four is from Dragon Ball Z." Angel had a few riskier answers but she played it save with that one. "I think the name is Frieza." Angel wasn't sure about that but she guessed it anyway.

Justine smiled as Professor Flamsteed commended her on her answer. It hadn't been her best worded reply, and she was slightly annoyed with herself for the sentimental, rather than scientific a reply she'd given. Whatever, not like she gave a toss about earning house points anyway.

The young girl listened intently as the Professor spoke, his eyes practically sparkling with love. And though she agreed with him, and was rather moved by his speech, she also found it sort of funny in a way, hence the amused smirk.

Name the characters? Oh, that was easy, Justine loved Muggle tv and movies, and most of these figures, were easily recognizable; save that purple thing, she had no clue what that was. *number four is Frieza, from zee anime Dragon Ball Z," Justine said. It had been one of her favorite shows growing up, and she still remembered the Frieza arc particularly well. " 'e was a galactic emperor and 'ad an army... I alvays zought he vas a girl." Justine had never appreciated how annoying her accent could be until she had to say dragon ball z while still sounding Parisian. Unfortunately, it had been just a bit much for even her impressive acting skills and her natural North American accent had slipped out, just a bit, though she doubted anyone would notice, as she'd quickly gone back to being French.

"Professor, are you going to turn us into aliens?" Justine joked, leaning back in her seat, her green eyes alight with mischief. "Is zhat vhat the lesson is about, today?"

Paloma almost snorted as Jun blew a kiss to her, making her actually mimic receiving it and placing it as if he had kissed her cheek and smiling wide. Sure, he was her best friend, and sure, he was the best cuñado, or brother-in-law. Brows.

SPOILER!!: Professor Airey

Paloma nodded as Professor Airey had repeated her words, sort of making the mimic to the 'Perfection of the Clashes' as he spoke. Then, she looked around, listening to the great answers her classmates were giving, which made her consider the way she would write her own definition in her notes later when back in her dorm, along with the cute description the professor had given. 'We are all connected' She repeated, mentally, hopefully to include it.

'Muggle telebox'
Hehe. Good and funny term. Would the professor ask for registry rights if she repeated it sometime in the future? 'Let's not guess, pay attention to the class.'

Once the pictures had appeared, Paloma eyed all of them. Sure...she had seen a couple Muggle cartoons, some were from Star Wars, and the others....NO CLUE. The only one she recognized was one, and just because a friend from childhood loved to see those violent cartoons in her TV because at home he wasn't allowed to. She raised her hand, took a deep breath of courage, "Number Four. Ummm...That Gray-White guy, with the circle above his head," She pointed a circle above his head as she spoke, "...his name is Frieza, and he was a villian, a really bad one. And it comes from a Japanese Manga, cartoon...fairly distributed throughout the whole planet." That's what she learned from hanging out with boys...

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

"WHAT THE?!"

Kevin narrowed his eyes at the Professor after he had banished his AWESOME name tag and a new one came in the place. The Gryffindor groaned, making sure that the man knew that he wasn't happy about having to write AGAIN and pointed his wand at the tag...AGAIN.

"Kenji Hirase" because he felt like using his real name for once. And to check if the man was going to banish this one as well. AAANYWAYS.... the man started to talk again ..which was boring and he blocked half of it out, until pictures appeared. That caught his interest for once because it didn't have pictures of stars or anything astronomy related. Or so he thought.

He looked at them but he had honestly no clue who was who. But one thing was for sure....ALIENS.

Okay so his answer hadn't gotten much of a positive response from the professor, but he hadn't really been expecting it. Not when others had spoken far better on the topic, some even seeming like they had swallowed a textbook. Benny had just given it a shot. Now for the second question with the pictures on the board, now they were delving into more unfamiliar territory, at least from a wizarding standpoint . However first one and then another caught his attention and the fourth year thought about giving his own guess on the matter.

"I think number 3...and maybe number 7 are from...Star Track," he answered with a touch of hesitance after raising his hand. Granted he wasn't really knowledgable on them or it but Benny had done some digging trying to figure out some of the stuff Professor Flamsteed loved to talk about. And those two seemed to him like they might have fit into the realm.

"I bet you were top of your class, sir." Ruby rejoined. He was energetic at least. And she approved of his suit of course. Her eyes glazed over a little at all the talking after that though and she inspected her nails instead. Boring. Right up Gabe's alley though right? She glanced at her brother and then up at the board.

SHE didn't recognize any of the pictures but Ruby DID pick out one common thread so she stuck her hand up again. "Professor, they aren't very attractive." The girl one was okay possibly, for a cartoon, but as usual Ruby's attention skimmed over that in favour of the others. "Is that because space messes up people's bodies? Does it mess up their faces too? The one with the tattoo on his head is okay I guess, but he looks cranky. Some of them look like aliens. They all look kind of moody. Are they the bad guys?" Because it looked like none of them got the girl, or they'd look less grumpy and more smiley.

Gabriel continued to stare at Professor Flamsteed, hoping to keep the anxiety down with his tunnel vision. For the most part, it was working like a charm....but then his sister took a seat beside him and he noticeably relaxed.

It was probably because Ruby was someone familiar...and though Gabe wouldn't admit it out loud, he had missed her. Anyway, he'd naturally assumed she'd be right at home at Hogwarts...due to how social she was. Ruby made friends easy and he just did not. Yes, he'd made a couple...Ceorlic and Jeremiah...and maybe Clara...(if you could call her constantly annoying him being 'friends')....and Dot. Dot was okay. Kinda felt like she had zero time for him now.

...Anyway, he was back to writing things when the photos went up on the board. He recognized a few of the images...but he settled on Frieza. Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z. Professor Flamsteed liked Dragon Ball? Gabe was regarding the older man was just....resigned awe. Yes, resigned awe. Nailed that emotion.

He'd laughed at her answer even though Maddie was being quite serious. Funny how adults did that sometimes, finding amusement in serious matters like coming up with a well thought out excuse for being out past bedtime. Didn't he SEE that it wasn't meant to be funny? She raised her eyebrows slightly but DID appreciate his well wishes where Benny was concerned. "THANK you, Professor. Me too." Her older brothers should really learn to take ALL the things she said to heart. JUST saying.

Wait, Flamsteed thought the giant squid could hear Dima? The second year itched to tell her f-word to yell again but truth be told, her own ears probably didn't need his voice raised that high again what with them being in such closer proximity. STILL, she wanted to meet that squid. SHE DID.

Also, Astronomy connects us all. Astronomy is the proverbial handcuffs of life, chaining us to one another. Yup, she got it. Very good. Maddie even did a little sketch of handcuffs inscribed with the word Astronomy, her own hand in one cuff and Flamsteed's in another. Connected, they were. Airey had SAID so.

WHO was that girl talking about the people in the photos and their LOOKS, anyway? That wasn't NEARLY as important as their brains and whether or not they were powerful beings. You could be attractive and have a head full of rocks and then you'd be SUNK, probably quite literally if you ever had the misfortune of falling in to the Black Lake. Looks were NICE and all but they weren't most important.

And Maddie only knew a FEW of the names for the photos and THEY had already been said so SHE took notes. Mhm!

Even though she kept her thoughts to herself, Soph was still paying close attention to everything, and when Tobes spoke up beside her AND the professor jumped on his desk AND awarded him house points, she snorted in laughter. Good on you, boyfriend. He'd just received the highest of honors from Flamsteed all in one go.

Whether she would have wanted to speak up and voice her answer or not as class continued along, Sophie... didn't recognize a single character that Flamsteed was displaying. The extent of her knowledge of Muggle culture went about as far as all things Disney, but stopped there. She had no idea about anything else, but... she was pretty impressed that so many others did. As many rattled off answers, Sophie eyed many of them. Many mentioned a "Star Wars" - wasn't that the thing Flamsteed liked so much? Or... wait... someone else said something about a "Star Trek," too. Merlin.

Well. One of those was definitely the thing the professor liked so much. Made sense that it was part of the lesson, then. Sophie was clueless, though.

'...we are learning about ourselves as well...'

Touching. It sounded like something out of a psychology book and aside from the idea of the Big Bang, the Slytherin had no interest in something like that. None whatsoever. He DID, however, pick up his quill and wrote down as much as he remembered from what the Professor had just said about Astronomy.

And those pictures? Grayson furrowed his eyebrows as he tried to make out who exactly they were. The last one was no brainer: Darth Vader, man. The fifth year had even dressed up as him one Halloween many years ago and ended up scaring his brother. Fun times. But one line in particular stuck out to him: Luke, I am your father.

'NNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!'

Lulz. He was happy now. Definitely going to pay rapt attention to this class if they happened to be talking about Darth Vader more. Did he know the others, though? Nah! The first one WAS from Loony Toons, as the girl over there had mentioned. Number three looked freaking creepy, something Grayson actually LIKED. He wanted to say that it was something from that Spanish movie where the girl died in the end but something told him that that wasn't it.

Soooooooooo he was going to sit and wait for the answers to be told so that he could note them all down. Besides, he was currently wondering something ELSE right now. Like whether they were all villains up there. Certainly looked the part and all.

So she was right about the stars and planets being pretty? Of course she was, because they WERE. Saturn was her favourite planet because of all the pretty colours and rings it has.

But moving on.

Staring at the pictures, one immediately jumped out at her because of muggle cartoons. She had seen some of them and it was lucky for her because she didn't think she could place any of the others. Raising her hand she said, "the first one is Marvin the Martian from the Looney Toons!"

Alright he needed to do his name again. He understood the professor's instructions and tapped the name tag and said, " Vaco Reverto!" and it was back to normal. He visualized in his head again his name and said it out loud and tapped the name tag. "KACE LECIUM!" There now that looked better. Precisely what his name should look like. After that, he noticed the professor had characters on the board. He grinned and knew two possibly three on the board. But he would say the one he knew.

He raised his hand and said, "Professor in the fourth picture, he is the villain in a show called Dragon Ball Z. His name is Frieza." He actually loved watching that show on his television. He would get up early on saturdays to watch it.

It was probably an understatement for Toby to say that he was proud of himself for getting the first desk-jump of the term. The fifth year knew the signs well, from watching Airey jump around the desks in previous terms, and picked up on exactly what the Starman was going to do with enough time to clear a space for him.

And POINTS too? Toby grinned; it was always a great ego boost to get those couple of unexpected extra points awarded here and there, and the Hufflepuff grinned and watched as Flamsteed leapt back off... and then onto another kids desk. Airey, man. Airey.

Shooting a brief happy look over at Soph, Toby moved his notes back in front of him on his now Airey-free desk and wrote down everything that was being said. Which was. Y'know. A lot.

As for that NEXT question... well. Uhhh... Toby had no idea. He'd never been one for watching TV and movies; always on the move, y'know? Not to say he didn't ever watch ANYTHING... but the limited amount of concentration coupled with a not-great memory made remembering characters and shows from sight near impossible. Except that first one, which he knew to be from Looney Tunes.......... but he was a Toby was a little bit late to that party.

SO no answer from him on this one. He just sat there with Soph, chillin' in silence with his smooth criminal, and steadily noting things down. Still very... still. HUH.

The Gryffindor shifted around, still trying to adjust his arms to cover his nametag in the most natural way he could. Didn't need to be drawing any attention to it. It was already embarrassing enough. And then Professor Flailsteed had to go and say it out loud, awwwh. Welp. That was a fail. Though, at the mention of a do-over, Zander perked up. Merlin, thank goodness for magic. Smiling to himself, the fourth year pulled out his wand and took a deep breathe.

Name tag... Part two? "Vaco Reverto!" Another grinned played upon his lips, when he took notice of the vanishing letters. Okay. This time, he was going to get it right. Zander Adair. OR was he supposed to go with just Zander? Or... Sometimes Professor called him Mister Adair... HUH? Which one was he supposed to use? Okay. Okay. "Zander!" and with a tap on the tag, he saw the golden letters appear, spelling his name all properly 'n everything! HA! Now he wouldn't have to worry about the shifty covering thing. That was tough.

Right then, back to reality.

Taking a look at the pictures, Zander just stared and blinked for some time. You'd think that the "muggle-ness" of things would help him finally get something right for once, but... He actually had no idea who any of those people were. Except he did know that they all looked really, really mad. At life. They looked really, really mad at life. Except for the first one, he looked just like Zander felt: Confused.

And also, looking at Kevin, the Gryffindor raised another eyebrow in confusion. Who the heck was Kenji and why was Kevin wearing his nametag?

See, he did know things about stuff and Flamsteed should totally call him what he magicked on his name tag. That was what name tags where for. Calling you what you wrote on them. And it was totally an epic name if you asked Dante.

Dante listened as long as he could before he stopped paying attention. He caught what the definition of Astronomy was. But that was it. The next thing he knew he heard the question and that was it. He did have an awesome daydream in between though. Having to do with giant squids and skateboards though. Pretty awesome.

They looked all mad about something. Maybe they were villains in something. Which would mean they all drove nice cars. Because that is what bad guys do. They drive nice cars and are of course not the nicest people in the world.

Dante started drawing a fedora and suit that his imaginary villain would wear. It looked pretty cool.
