Astronomy Lesson 1 :: Seasons & Solstices

http://i969.photobucket.com/albums/a...37/lesson1.png

The brilliant colors of the sunset have been painted over by the mystical navy blue of the night sky and as you enter the Astronomy classroom you can see the moon clearly through one of the many windows. The desks are arranged in their usual semi circle to help created a more personal environment, only something seems a bit off as you go to sit down. Both the desk and chair wobble as the legs on one side are longer than the other and cause you to lean quite a bit. Try not to fall out of your seat or have your things fall to the floor, yes?

Did you remember to use the lint roller on the small table outside of the classroom? It was there next to the sign that reads, "Not to be used as a brush for your hair."

A lamp, a quaffle, and 3 can lids painted black rest in the middle of the professor's desk. Professor Flamsteed, wearing the same top hat you may have spotted him with at the Opening Feast, can be seen standing to the right of his desk with a giddy expression on his face and offers you a salute as you move to take your seat.

So come on in and have a seat. Class will begin shortly.

Sophie really did NOT think she had any lint on her uniform. It was practically the first day of school, and her things were brand new. Meh. Nevertheless, she took the lint brush and rolled it over her clothes a few times before going into the room. Sophie took a long glance around the room, just in case she needed to take note of anything, and then chose a seat. She had just sat down and placed her bag on the floor, when...

*sliiiiiiiiiiiiiide...thud*

Err, had she really just slid off her chair and onto the floor? She cleared her throat, brushed her hair to the side, and then casually got up. Had anybody seen that?! She looked around the room and noticed no one but the professor was actually present. "Err, sorry, Professor. I think my chair's broken," she said. Leave it to her to choose the rotten apple of the bunch.

Deezerz 05-11-2014 04:40 AM

We see you Sophie XD

Beverly Wayne did not enjoy the trip up the Astronomy Tower, but it wasn't as bad as the last time she'd been here. Being a person full of energy she'd even attempted to take the steps in two to get there faster. She was even in a cheery mood as she got the door that using the lint roller didn't even tick her off. This time, anyway.

What made her mood increase ten times more was walking in just as Newell took a dump into the floor. Beverly coughed softly, clearly alerting the other girl she'd seen EVERYTHING.

"Good day, Professor Airey," she said, shooting him a small, yet genuine smile. HE got smiles. Newells didn't. Not that one anyway.

Glancing from Sophie to the desk she'd chosen, Beverly poked it. It wobbled. Nope. There was NO WAY the same thing was going to happen to her. She gazed at Airey with big curious eyes. Were they poor again?!

Happily Lux made her way into the Astronomy classroom. Even though this subject gave her a headache, she loved it.

"Hello Professor Flamsteed! Did you have a good summer?"

Seeing Sophie try to take a seat only to slide down to the floor, Lux decided to stay standing for the moment. Yes, that seemed like a better idea than falling on her butt.

Looking towards the door, she waited for other people to arrive. Hopefully Bay would come soon because she wanted to sit beside him. Hopefully without falling to the floor.

FireboltAvis88 05-11-2014 04:50 AM

Anyone?

Don't ask him how, but Cris managed to find his way up to the Astronomy Tower. He first peered in to make sure he was actually in the right place before nodding to himself.

Wait what was this roller thing doing here?Puzzled Cris looked around before picking it up and examining it. He touched it surface and found it to be sticky. Then it dawned on him. It was a lint roller. What he was supposed to do with it, he didn't know. But he just rolled it up and down his robes a couple of times before replacing it in its holder.

Entering the classroom, he noticed the Professor sitting up front wearing a top hat. Ooookaaayyyy!! to each his own, Cris thought to himself as he slowly approached the Astronomy Professor.

"Hello Professor Flamsteed. It is good to see you again," Cris smiled as he greeted the man before turning to find a seat.

Noticing that there were students already seated inside, Cris found an empty desk, sat down, leaned back in his chair and almost fell back. He quickly leaned forward to grabbed hold of the desk to stop his fall....only to find that the table was equally unstable. Cris quickly stood up and stared at both desk and chair. He poked one and then the other a couple of times and realized that both pieces of furniture was lopsided. Go figure!!

Sratching his head, he slowly sat down in his chair, rocking forward a little so that all legs were safely planted on the floor. Okay he was safe for now.

Star-Lord 05-11-2014 04:53 AM

Jun actually didn't really want to go to astronomy just yet. Not after that little scene in the entrance hall. But he liked Flamsteed's lessons so no reason not to go. The boy toy entered the class and looked around. Yup, everything almost the same. "Hello, professor. Did you make it to the loo alright?" Poor man had mentioned it but somehow just went back inside into the Great Hall. Either way, Jun headed towards a desk when a younger girl sat and fell. Oh, broken chair already. Now the boy was iffy about sitting on the chairs. But he didn't want to sit on the ground either or stand.

Grabbing a desk towards the middle of the class, Jun set his bag on the floor and sat down. Oh, good, it didn't break. Poor girl.

Happycontentsighhhhhhhh. Marigold had enough sleep, was in freshly laundered (and good smelling) robes, and was ready to go to one of her favorite classes with one of her favorite teachers. She smiled at the lint roller - it had been a summer since she last used it - and used it on her sleeves. Everything else was clean, she did say it was freshly laundered. Marigold grinned at the professor and offered a "Hello! I like your hat!" before continuing to a desk. She set her bag down and slid into her seat, ready to look out for people she knew (especially Mitch) when she was suddenly

... On the floor. Marigold wrinkled her forehead and turned around to look at the chair. She had been so focused on being happy that she didn't realize the chair legs were uneven. She decided to stay on the floor and wait now that her butt hurt from falling on it.

carpediem 05-11-2014 05:03 AM

Deciding to actually use the lint roller for the first time, Caelen made her way over and brushed it over her robes. Ugh, every piece of lint and dirt in existence seemed to like black clothing, didn't it? Who KNEW how linty these things could be? Weird. There should be like a lint roller spell, or like a lint repellent spell or something. Entirely practical. More practical than half of the spells in their books.

"Hello, Professor? Did you have a good summer? How does it feel to be young again?' She laughed at that and hoped that he wouldn't take offense to that. But... the... young thing. Yeah. Awkward redhead was still awkward. And taller. Did anyone notice that she grew two inches? It was a really big deal when you were short! The littlest growth was something to be proud of. Hopefully someone would actually notice.

Taking a seat in the semi-circle, the girl noticed with a start that the chair legs were two different lengths. Adrienne talked about how a couple of years ago, Hogwarts didn't have money for stuff. Was that Happening again? Because that would just be awful. Sighing, she took out her textbook and looked around. The atmosphere around the tower was always amazing, with the sunset and everything. Seriously, this was a beautiful place.

The Astronomy Tower had left Marisol winded. It was an unusual-looking classroom, and the first year had thought she was done with weird and unexpected quirkiness. She was horribly wrong. The spaniard had better figure that out if she wanted to survive at Hogwarts.

Was this professor Flamsteed guy a neat freak or what? Marisol's robes had never been worn before today. It was, like, physically impossible for them to have lint. This teacher already reminded the eleven year-old of her sister, Lucía. That wasn't necessarily a good thing, the way she meant it. Still, the experience of Astronomy was pretty cool!
"Hello," Marisol said, greeting no one in particular.

Stefan 05-11-2014 05:19 AM

So far, his first day in Hogwarts is good. Being a new student and getting directions as to where a certain classroom was located isn’t so bad, seeing that the portraits along the hallways of the school were very helpful. They even skipped, jumped…and twirled with him as he made his way to the Astronomy Tower.

Ethan had to go back a few steps as he saw a lint roller on the desk. Ah yes. X marks the spot. He picked it up, rolled it over his robes and passed it on to the next student. “Goooooood evening, professor!” Ethan greeted the man and gave him a salute. Just like what he did with Professor Culloden earlier. He picked a seat, sat on it and…whoa…why was he tilting?

*THUD*

“I’m okay!” Ethan called out as he quickly got up from his spot and gave his chair and table a stink-eye. Yeah. So much for a good first day in Hogwarts.

Slowfie 05-11-2014 05:22 AM

Lint roller; check. Donny sniffed his uniform, which smelled great by the way, before entering the class.
Star stuff... was alright, but he'd much rather be reading about.. dolphins, or something. Space dolphins. That should be a thing. He yawned and hoped that today's lesson would be exciting, with or without the space dolphins.
"Hi, professor! Nice suit!" He liked his suits, didn't he?

Donnacha looked around and spotted Jun, Tie-Dye Boy! He walked over but didn't sit down just yet, were those chairs safe??? After just devouring two sandwiches Donny wasn't sure the chair would be able to hold him. His legs were just fine!

Cassirin 05-11-2014 05:24 AM

Mo gave his entire self a vigorous roll-down with the lint roller, remembering to avoid his hair, of course. He settled the roller back on the table and swaggered into the Astronomy classroom, a smile ready for one of his favorite professors.

And then he saw the Quaffle, and it was like a kick to the stomach. A punch to the jaw. It was painful and debilitating, OKAY? His smile wobbled dangerously before Mo grabbed one of the closest desks and tried to sit at it. The desk wobbled too, which had Mo flipping it around to look at what the leg situation was.

Oh, right, then. Mo seated himself at the desk sideways, so his legs were both flat on the short side and his weight was distributed backwards to stabilize himself. It wasn't wobbling, but he WOULD have a sore bum soon. "Good day, Professor."

Awarlesta Black 05-11-2014 05:26 AM

Declan walked in to the very cool classroom. He had actually been looking forward to this Astronomy class since he met the professor on the Peru trip. Plus, it was also his favorite class with all the mysteries of space and whatnot. Cool, very cool.

Ah, a lint roller. Yes, he remembered him having a thing about this. He ran the roller over his robes, convinced he hadn't any, but did so as a precaution.

"Good evening, Professor Airey." The near-seventeen year-old greeted, taking a glance at the steampunk looking lamp on his desk. "Cool lamp."

Setting his eyes on a desk in the corner, he cooly walked over to it, running his hand through his hair. However, his taking of the seat was not so cool. Was he sliding back off???? NONONONONONONONONONONONONO! He gripped onto the other side and pulled himself to the high end. What the heck, Airey??

JennMarie 05-11-2014 05:36 AM

He wasn't the biggest astronomy fan to be quite frank BUT he was a fan of learning new things which is what school happened to be all about. So even though the fifth year wasnt a fan he took the class eagerly. He wasnt aure when he'd ever need to read the stars or whatever but just knowing how was something he could put on his bucket list. Or something.

Making the long stretch up to the top of the tower he eyed the lint roller at the entrance before looking down at his robes.... nope, he didnt need it. So in the room he went where he found a curious scene. Several students on the floor, some standing, none in a desk?

"Hello Professor.." his brows were furrowed as he looked at the desks and made one simple observation.

They were sitting unevenly.

Did no one know how to balance themselves? He knew he could. Balance and him were like one with all the surfing and stuff he did back home. Picking a desk, a few away from some others, he made assumptions on how he had to sit in the thing before trying it out.

Placing himself in his chair hefound he had to actually concentrate to get the balance just right. His desk still wobbled slightly as he put ome weight on it to keep his thinga in place.

Now no one talk to or touch him!

Gryffindoll 05-11-2014 05:37 AM

Lou was entirely too eager to get his hands on that lint roller. After the last student placed it back on the table, the Gryffindor proceeded to roll it aaall over his robes, shirt, and trousers. All of which had been covered in pesky white kitten fur. He’d really need to make a note to get at least twenty of these things.

Feeling nice and clean after hogging up the lint roller for the past five minutes, Louis walked into the classroom.

“Hello, Professor.” He gave the man a small smile, though his brows were furrowed questioningly. …Why was he wearing a top hat? “Nice hat.” And why were there people sitting on the floor?

How naive of him to think this term would be closer to normal than the last.
Placing his things on the floor, Louis sat down. And slowwwly began to slide. He grabbed the table in front of the chair, but of course, that was all wobbly and weird too. The boy managed to pull himself back to the left, but ended up just sliiiiding back to the right. And this weird little dance went on until he gave up and decided to just balance himself on the longer two legs of the chair. It wasn't exactly comfortable, but at least he wasn't sliding anymore.

DaniDiNardo 05-11-2014 05:43 AM

First stop. Lint roller. This was a routine she'd gotten all too used to by now. Lex went over her robes maybe four times to make sure she hadn't left anything there before stepping into the classroom and being greeted by Sophie sliding right off her chair...

...

Okay. Sure. We'll just....not question it. Nope. Instead, Lex walked to the front of the room and grabbed a seat there. For as long as Professor Airey had been teaching she'd always snagged a seat at the front. It was just a thing. "Good evening Professor." She said with a wide grin, throwing herself into the seat--Merlin did she miss being able to do that but WHY was she unbalanced? Like, did no one other than Sophie and now her realize that the seats were a bit wonky?

Turning in her seat, she gave Jun a small wave and a smile. She'd have sat next to him but one he was in the middle and two...after that er...run in, back at the feast with the Professor she'd just....not sit next to him in case the Professor got awkward about it again--

Hang on. Was that...Alexa squinted at the object next to the lamp. A quaffle? "That's just hurtful."

ArianaBlack 05-11-2014 05:57 AM

After staring at the lint roller for a couple of minutes Zander reluctantly picked it up and began.... rolling? Term had just begun, why would their uniforms have any lint on them to begin with. Then upon entering the classroom he received a salute (?) from his Professor. Okay. The lesson hasn't even started yet and Zander could already tell that it was going to be pretty... interesting. Only then did Zander realize he was beginning to stare at the peculiar top hat and he quietly muttered a quick apology before practically running for a seat. Now that was embarrassing.

SarcasticStrawberry 05-11-2014 06:07 AM

Well this was more like it. No dungeons to go to for this lesson. It was close to the common room. Not early in the morning and the view from up here was ah-mazing. She noticed a lint roller outside the door so she she used it. Assuming that was why it was there. To be used.

She smiled to Ariey "Good evening Professor Flamsteed!" Now to go find a seat. Lux she grinned and waved as her. But moved on to the next seat over. Because there was Louis. Who seem to have a problem sitting still. Or not the chair legs seem to be uneven. Yeah okay weird. All of them were.

Before she sat down she put her bag on the floor and pulled out two books. She slid them under the two uneven legs of Lou desk. "There you go. Then she done the exact same with hers. Good thing she had enough books for them. She sat down in her seat. It was still wobbly but she wasn't falling out anytime soon. Or so she hoped.

Lockhartian 05-11-2014 06:17 AM

No lint roller needed. But it was nice to see Marcus Branxton had given it back. Though at this point it was probably a new one.

WIDE SMILES FOR AIREY FLAMSTEED, as usual. And a wink, cuz why not? It was the start of the term. "Hi, Professor!" Forever content about coming to Astronomy, never mind all those stairs... after five years, it was good exercise, anyway. "I trust everything is well," she commented, still smiling, as she walked towards Lex. Everything ought to be well, look at him giving salutes to everyone.

Hmmmm? What, complaining already? "What is?" Hurtful, that was. The fact that they didn't seem to have functioning desks at school? Was that going to be a thing now? Since everyone else's seemed to be off balance as well, then she didn't comment on it. Two fallen kids ought to give away the problem, no? How about solutions, hmmmm?

Either way, she was sitting next to Lex.

YAY ASTRONOMY. This better be good, no pressure or anything. Yes, there's pressure.

She hadn't seen Lottie enter the classroom (too busy focusing on the quaffle you see) but then the voice yanked her by her ankle back to reality and had Lex blinking at Lottie for a moment before realizing what the question was about. "Hmm?--Oh! The quaffle." She said, pointing a finger at it. "We hear all the way back at the feast that there will be no Quidditch, then today I come to class and see a quaffle." Pouring salt on cuts anyone?

But enough about that, class with Lottie, she was so ready for this term, just look how well it'd already turned out....minus the shoddy desks and chairs of course.

"You reckon we're doing a class on gravity?" Bless those fallers, taking the initiative to demonstrate but she was pretty clear on the concept, thanks.

Wiggle. Wiggle.

Okay, so far his chair was good but two students had fallen from broken ones. It was a bit wobbly but still manageable. Jun didn't even want to lean on the desk. Merlin knew everything would fall apart and his ankle would get all messed up again. Oops, sorry Lex, but doesn't seem like the boy was gonna keep his ankle safe this term. Even with tedious practices he'll be starting soon. Oh, but look! Captain Crabs was here! "Hey Cap! I see you're not taking any chances on sitting on these things?" Jun didn't blame him. People who were lucky enough got chairs that didn't break and were just wobbly.

Jun also spotted Lex, giving her a grin but weak wave. Any other movement would probably break the chair.

MERLIN, FLAMSTEED! GET BETTER CHAIRS!

Hmmm? What Quaffle?

Her eyes followed Lex's hand and she almost spoke to say that it was rude to point, you know? But, whatever. It was perfectly clear that Airey had taken all her attention, and the desks had too, for she didn't see either the quaffle nor the lamp when she stepped inside.

Oops?

"Oh," well, it wasn't hurtful for Lottie at all, "I'm positive it's not related," or was it?

Gravity? She eyed the lamp for a moment... and shook her head, "Not really." How about displacement? For the desks? Yes. The lamp... made it almost impossible to come up with something.

SlytherinSistah 05-11-2014 06:48 AM

And it was was a nice show of snakes in the Astronomy tower tonight!

Even if a few of them seemed to be out of their seats. He'd rolled himself forward and backward, perhaps lingering too long on his own backside just to be a complete and utter butthead, with the lint roller and dispensed of the shrivelfig bubblegum so that his old robes would fit before entering the classroom.

"Professor Flamsteed." He greeted. Perhaps the smile made it a little too poisonous. In the realm between adoration and lethal obsession for the tall, blonde astronomer. He'd done his homework over the summer and found that Airey Flamsteed was indeed quite the learned and recognized wizard. He took a seat, across from the cute little Hufflepuff and balanced upon the surface of their circled desks. He let his eyes wonder until they landed upon the steampunky lamp. Oooh! Cutty rather liked the spidery legs.

lazykitty 05-11-2014 06:56 AM

Blah. Having to go to class at night was something that Layla had never liked to do. But Flamsteed had a way of making Astronomy interesting enough to be worth it. So, she'd pulled herself out of the common room and made her way up to the Astronomy Tower. Where she quickly ran the lint roller over her robes before entering the classroom and flopping into a seat. Which she immediately slid out of and into the floor.

"Whaaaa...."

Yep, okay. Staying here. Her books could be a makeshift desk.

"Hello, Professor Flamsteed."

Somnium 05-11-2014 07:16 AM

Melek wandered into the classroom, ignoring the lint roller thing. She didnt feel like it today. Mel glanced at the professor and gave him a slight nod then searched around for a good seat. Melek finally picked one after what seemed like forever even if it was just maybe 5 minutes. She laid her head down on the desk and closed her eyes, waiting for the lesson to begin. Mel, of course, wasn't going to go to sleep, but just wanted to rest her eyes while the other students come in and stuff.
