Muggle Studies Lesson One (Electricity: Building Simple Circuits)
The classroom has been arranged into a style that might be familiar to those of you who have been taught by Professor Hadley before; there's several round tables, along with five or six chairs around the tables. Each table is void of any materials or props (for now).
Professor Hadley is seated at the front of the classroom, mesmerized by the pulling of a simple string on a lamp. Light on, light off, light on, ...
ooc:take a seat and keep chatter to a minimum. We'll begin shortly as soon as enough people arrived. Lesson has begun (semi). No entering the class, but please pretend like you've been here the whole time. Thanks <3

First Question: Introduction and what are different types of Electricity you know of?
Answers and Next Question: So what type of unit is used in electricity which determines how dim or bright a light bulb will be?

Eh? Anything would be better than Muggle Studies so far. West was inclined to think that Hadley would be pretty cool. And already a good start. Interesting stuff. West considered things and then put his hand up. "The static kind like what happens when you rub your head with a balloon?" Sure. That was electric stuff right? Yeah. Books said so.

Laura raised her hand. "There is current electricity." Laura smiled she was glad that she could see Professor Hadley though she wished that Hadley was still doing Arithmancy.
Electricity does electricity? Er, right, Professor. He merely nodded. "I meant more along the lines of today's topic for discussion...but I'm sure it does." Yes. Maybe?
He fiddled with a pencil from behind his ear as Hadley introduced herself to the class, only half listening. He knew who she was, and as for her credentials...well, he didn't care what sort of lineage she came from as long as he did well in his exams and found out some cool stuff about Muggles. Because they were cool. He'd gotten to know some over the summer, thanks to Lex's suggestion.
The bolt of lightning soon got his attention back. And he gave a smug smile as Hadley asked about electricity. So they WERE doing it in today's lesson. Awesome! As long as he didn't have to sit there obsessively pulling on the cord of a light. "As well as the stuff that comes through wires, isn't there stored electricity? In the form of bat-trees?" Y'know, those little cylindrical things?
Marissa jumped as the professor shot electricity over their heads and asked what kinds of electricity there were. She sat there a little baffled, "There's more than one kind?" she asked more to herself than anyone else.

Their Head of House was a half blood too? Just like him! How cool! And she was the previous Arithmancy Professor? Why couldn't she have stayed as the subject's professor? He still had mixed feelings about Professor Whack a doodle. Anyway, the lesson was starting!

Ohh! Oh! Adi knew this! He raised a hand. "Static electricity is one, Professor!'' he said enthusiastically. He knew that because he used to watch Bill Nye's show a lot.
Types of electricity? That meant that there was... more than one? Adrienne had always been confused by the stuff. Papa had told her that it was basically just lightning that had been harnessed and made harmless, but that didn't make much sense, because all that lightning did was light up and burn, while electricity powered his coffee machine and the computer, and those did a lot more than light up or burn.
"Um, lightning is a sort of electricity, no?" Maybe? Possibly? Please don't fail me out of this class on the first day?

Minerva smiled at Hadley, thank Merlin she had her still here, because this term was not turning out the way she wanted it to and the fact that she had NEWTS coming she just had to have someone with some sense teach her Arithmancy, but for now it was on to Muggle Studies. Pulling out her parchment she watched as Hadley began her back ground and smiled. They were so similar, witch mother goes muggle for muggle father. That was her life, but she probably knew she was a witch from the beginning unlike Min. That still bugged her as to why her mother never said anything. Oh well past is past and right now she knew all of this about Hadley so she let her mind drift a bit.
Moving it back to the class as the first question was asked Minerva put her hand up, There are two forms of electricity ma'am. One is called current that goes through things, such as wires to produce the object to run. For example that lamp to be able to turn on." Putting her hand back down she listened to the others answer as well.
Right,Static was one type of electricity. But the other, Nigel probably would have said lightning also. But all he really knew is that you plug a appliance or something in a socket and it works like magic.
But Nigel also knew the other one. Which Min just said. He does read a little too much. "Current. An Example would be a battery"
Static and Current.

Ella listened intently as Hadley spoke about her life, having not known a lot of that information. It was sort of nice, that Hadley had grown up in a muggle community. It made Ella feel like she could go talk to her if things at home got to be a bit much as they sometimes did. At least for Ells she had Oakey and his family living next door. It was comforting to have at least a few people who understood and could use magic.
Electricity, eh? That explained the lamp. Ella smiled a little and because many people had given the types of electricity, she decided to give another example instead.
"Professor, another example of static electricity is when you shuffle on the carpet with your socks and then touch something metal. It gives you that little zap."
Electricity, electricity, electricity. Tora thought that electricity was interesting, but magic did things much more effectively. Her Squib mother was obsessed with electric devices, and so Tora knew a bit about them. She noted that most of her classmate had already mentioned the two types she knew of so she thought she would add on to what they were saying. "Well static electricity is in the atmosphere. There's so many volts way up there, they just have nowhere to go." she said remembering parts of a lecture her mom had given her.

Arithmancy for ten whole years?!
OUCH. That had to have hurt. Sophie dreaded the very thought of possibly taking the subject for seven whole years. She couldn't imagine a ten year span. No wonder the woman wanted a change.
Anyway, back to Muggle Studies...
Sophie raised her hand. "I know the Muggles use light bulbs instead of candles for light," she said. "Well, they do use candles, but not as much as light bulbs." The Slytherin dorm could really use some light bulbs, come to think of it...
Kace remembered going to her Arthimacy class but it just wasn't for him. He knew Belle was in those classes and she said the subject was a bit challenging. But 10 years??? That is an accomplishment right there!
But now she was teaching muggle studies? Sweet...he LOVED this subject. He heard the professor ask which type of electricity there is. Kace didn't know there was different kinds. He never thought of it.
"Professor isn't an example for current electricity is a generator?" he asked. Because he knows when the power goes out people use generators to turn the electricity back on.
Muggle studdies! Studdies about HERSELF! Miss Abbi liked this, because this was the kind of thing she could totally ace. Those other magic subjects as awesome as they were, were so different and slightly confusing compared to what she was used to. Good thing she was good at adjusting. Mhhhhm.
With her head resting in her hands, Abbi listened to the Professor. She nodded. Hadley. Okay. Another Professor she could tick off that she had met. But that whole life story thing, kinda cool if you asked Abbi. A Magical healer...Abbi wondered what different stuff they could do compared to the usual doctor. Probably awesome, awesome things!
Before she could linger on that much longer the topic changed to electricity."I have electricity at home, Professor!" She was totally special, okay? "I have the one where you put the switch on and then the lights go on in your house."She continued to speak about eagerly. "I think it runs on something called a circuit." She nodded, sure of herself.

Merliiiiiiiiiin, it was so awkward having Professor Hadley as the Muggle Studies professor you know? Kat was just so used to seeing her inside the Arithmancy classroom and boring teaching them the different numbers and processes and stuff. She didn't like the new Professor for Arithmancy, Professor French. He was dumb and he never made sense. Like... honestly? He seemed to imply that boys were way more superior than girls because they got beards?
Now Kat just thought of shaving his beard. See if it actually made him smarter. But anyway, she shifted her attention back to the discussion. Hadley in Muggle Studies. Got to get used to that for this term.
So... kinds of electricity. Kat's family didn't use them, because they were all witches and wizards. "Yeah, what they said. There's static and current electricity." And nothing more from the Head Girl, except scribbling on a piece of parchment. She was taking note of these stuff.

Umm...."Yes, Professor...I did know that." Lex's brows crinkled and the look of curiosity etched into her expression had deepened. That...was common knowledge. "It'll keep doing that until the bulb goes bad." Consider Alexa confused. There was no great revelation involved in pulling a light switch...but the Professor was acting like there was and now she couldn't shake the feeling that maybe she'd missed something.
Blink.
They were going to be talking about electricity today? There...was nothing special about that. Everyone had electricity...didn't they? Her entire neighbourhood was always well lit. Of course...her neighbourhood was predominantly muggle but still!
"You said there are a couple Professor, I only know two, static and current. Are we going to be learning about some third kind today?" Was that what she was implying or was she simply missing something again? SEE WHY SHE NEEDED SUGAR??

Well, it seemed like people were already answering the Professor. So, Tag sat quietly. What was the put of giving her an answer when it seemed his classmates had already beat him to it? He'd just be repeating the same things they'd just said.
Ohhhh. He heard Ella talk about the carpet type of elecricity. Tag chuckled to himself. That was always fun to practice, so Tag, smiling, simply said, "What Alec's favorite girl said. The whole sock shuffling on a carpet." That favorite girl was Ella. If that wasn't obvious. "What Ella said." added Tag with a smirk.

Oh? So Hadley had grown up in a Muggle community too? That's something you didn't find out everyday. The seventeen year old tilted his head as she talked, wondering what it was probably like for her and her sisters to have magic around the house. ... Wait, she had mentioned something about having sisters, right? That one time... she showed him a pin or brooch?
Before he could dwell on that, though, Tag 'Fredrick' 'Sweetcheeks' Kildare happened.
Alec BLINKED as he turned his attention towards the blonde boy. This had to be part of the embarrassing thing he had been talking about, yeah? There was no other reason as to why he had said THAT in the middle of the class to HADLEY. Not that he minded the favourite part, since it was true, but TAG! Way to seize an opportunity!
... Question. Oh right. He was meant to be answering that. The Hufflepuff shot the Gryffindor a sheepish, half-amused expression before looking towards the front again, raising his hand in the air as he did so. "Erm... there's current electricity which has its own two types; direct current and alternating current." There. That was good enough, right?
Tag - 1; Alec - 0 ... We are onto you, leprechaun.
And it seemed as if most, if not all, of who was coming today had arrived. Which meant time to stop the lamp string pulling. Leaving it in its on position, Hadley stood from her spot to introduce herself.
"Morning. As most of you know, I'm Professor Hadley. As a brief history, I taught Arithmancy for 10 years, but upon hearing about Professor Cerulean leaving Hogwarts for other opportunities, I've decided to take up Muggle Studies instead as the subject - and people - are quite fascinating. Not that it matters," because blood status didn't matter. "But I am a Half-blood, who grew up in a Muggle Community. My mother worked as a magical healer up until she met my father, but her role has casually shifted to nurse to be able to blend into the Muggle Community."
And that was probably really boring to most of them, but she felt like some history was required. But enough about her. Withdrawing her wand, she flicked and a shot a bolt of lightning over their heads across the classroom.
"Awake? Alright. So there are a couple types of electricity in existence. Who can tell me what some of them are?"
Sarah listened to what the teacher was saying, before her hand shot up, "there is static electricity and current electricity. Static electricity is like when you rub your jersey and a balloon together, electricity is created as protons and electrons are transferred... Then there is Direct current and alternating current like the others said before. In current electricity, the electricity comes from chemical reactions in the battery...I loved science in school."
She could go on forever, it was one of her favourite sections.
Asher's mother was from a muggle family. He had spent many summers with his grandmother and the rest of the Miller family, trying his best to not talk about how wonderful it was to be a wizard. His grandmother had lots of electrical appliances and lights in her house. How the electricity got into them, he wasn't sure. All of them had strings that stuck into the wall, so he assumed it came from inside the house.
"I visited a muggle science center a few summers ago, and they had a giant ball that you could put your hands on and the lightning inside would follow your hands around. Is that electricity?" The ball was very neat and seemed to have some sort of muggle attraction properties. It seemed no one could walk past without placing their hands on it.
"Oh, yeah, and that electricity you make by shuffling your feet across the carpet." Although, that one was best saved for annoying little cousins. Asher found that if he gave them a few good zaps, they would leave him alone for the rest of the afternoon.

MUGGLE STUDIES.
HE WAS GOOD AT MUGGLE STUDIES. Or, well, he was good at knowing about muggles and muggle stuff. Like football! And he had been really good at muggle school - he didn't really like maths, and history was a bit boring (though they had that here, yayNOT) but science had been pretty cool.
This lesson really seemed to remind him of science. YAY for science! "Yeah, like everyone's said, there's static electricity and current electricity. There's also two types of current electricity, and you can see static electricity with a balloon and girls' hair!" Benzi reckoned this was the most alive and peppy he'd ever been in a class. And yeah, he was showing off. So what?! He had looked really stupid in some of those other classes - gotta get himself looking like a Ravenclaw!
. . . It had been an obviously really easy subject for both Uncle Jake and Mummy. Benzi prided himself in knowing that his two other cousins sometimes really struggled with Muggle Studies. HEHEHE.

Mer-lin! Was Hadley crazy throwing lightening around like that?! Someone could've gotten struck! But yes, Sky was awake, thank you. And they were studying electricity. Awesome. She knew plenty about this stuff, having split her schooling about evenly between muggle and magical. "There's static electricity, which isn't just what happens when you scrape feet on the carpet, but what lightening is made of too. And then there's current electricity, which is split between direct and alternating types." She'd almost gotten smart there and named off the different ways muggles got electricity for their homes, but thought better of it.

Electricity. That was awesome. He rather enjoyed working with electricity, especially after he spent the summer in the shop. S'like the most manly, awesome job ever. Smiiirk. And he had a beard now. So he was manly man, which helped with his repair shop man look.
Anyway, he knew the two different types of electricity obviously, but there was no need to repeat it. People were throwing their hands up all over the place and answering. But yeah, he knew them.
Were they going to work with a telsa coil? Those things were the coolest. And he loved shocking people with them.

"The kind that hurts and the kind that doesn't," Alice informed the professor matter-of-factly, twirling a quill in between her fingers. What? When she and Dora had gone into Muggle London and the sixth year had tried playing with outlet things, it HAD hurt.
But those weird funny feletones didn't seem to hurt at all.
Muggles were so confusing. Why did she take this class again?
She wondered if Cerulean had informed Hadley of her designated Muggle Studies naptime. In the corner. Would the former Arithmancy professor mind? Textbooks made excellent pillows.

Wade's knowledge on the workings of Muggle appliances as expected, was limited.. But quite large considering his pure-blood heritage. His own Aunt and Uncle dealt with them over in Norway, because no one else cared to, hence the occasional muggle-like gifts from them. It was intriguing to hear about others heritage to Wade, and it got him into trying this class out since everyone had to have some reason for getting into it despite their background.
Wade's deep thinking beneath his furrowed brows was interrupted by the sudden bolt of lightning.. *Blink* Types of electricity.. Some of the responses and answers seemed good to him, though he liked to give an answer not many spoke of. At least from what his ears heard, he finally raised his hand to answer, "There's also solar power.. that requires the light from our sun to make electricity."
We know how electricity works. How do electric shocks work? Yes, Queen Alice? Why is Hadley calling her Lottie instead of Lotus? Those were bigger questions.
On a totally unrelated subject, THAT is why we like the Head Boy, he totally stole her answer. Like, she discussed this in her Astronomy homework with Airey Flamsteed. And only with Airey since he was the only one who read it. Still, was it truly a type of electricity in its own? Solar panels were only a mean to a purpose, yeah? Or was she overthinking this? Why was she asking so many questions? And not out loud.
Hand up. "Right. So, static and current." And aaall the other kinds up until we reach electromagnetism and things get complicated. "In the case of solar power, given that it uses the sun's light to generate electricity within solar cells... it'd fall under current electricity, right?" No laughter or anything this time. We're serious about this, because those devices were brilliant.
