This square, stone area is the middleman between the castle and the grounds. Thick columns enclose this space, while elegant ivy creeps its way up the pillars. In the center, water plays merrily down a multi-tiered fountain, which provides a pleasant background for conversations. Whether it is a bench to sit on, a quiet place to study, or a hang out spot for friends, there are many ways students use this open-air location.
Asher, Dementors, Harley.. no quoting.. Mother figure Min has kicked in.. sorry..

What was he doing... Minerva felt the exhaustion hitting her... She felt faint really from all the cold and the mind fighting she was having between happy and sad. It was like she needed a straight jacket, but it seemed like all her efforts to be the older student.. the leader to the younger was going to fail anyway when the little badger began moving. How was he even moving with the crippling cold and desperation that the dementors gave. He was eleven. If she at seventeen was struggling how was just a child doing all this...
She looked dumbfounded as he used the spell from transfiguration still unable to get herself to even focus enough to move.. She was lucky was getting everything she was and this little guy was just jumping around like it was a summer day. Blue eyes watched as the Dementors chased him and she hoped her small weak patronus that she was sending could help at least a bit.. Why didn't he listen.. Had no one told him he needed to listen to older students. They were suppose to know what they were talking about, right?
Horror rushed over her as she watched the dementors stop their cat and mouse game and head in...to.. the... castle.. her thoughts went to failure.. She was a failure.. Her entire purpose was to save the ones out here and keep them from going into the castle where all the other students were. Ethan was...
She turned and without thinking her mouth started going, "When an older student tells you to run.. You run.. What were you thinking.. You could have been killed. Dementors are not wizards they can't be scared away.. I will not stand to see one of my badgers harmed in front of me.. Do you understand?" She grabbed the little one by the shoulders and threw him in a hug. "Are you okay? You aren't hurt at all are you?" She let go of the boy as tears fell out of her eyes.. She could have easily watched a little badger die today and that just wasn't happening on her watch, but it seemed all the effort failed.
In the midst of all the chaos she wasn't sure what happened to Harley and she looked around for him. She was exhausted and felt so light headed. From all the focus she forced... She went up against the wall and slid down it putting her head in her hands trying to regain her strength a bit. Looking back up she whispered with exhaustion, "I have Reese Cups in my bag.. It's chocolate.. It will make you feel better." The question was where was her bag..

Alright, offering done. Now what...?
Penelope consulted her textbook again and saw...she had to chant this verse thing. Really? Still talking to the tree...or...the "wight" of the tree? The guardian? Was there a bowtruckle guarding this one? Was THAT who she was talking to? Bowtruckles? She had no wood lice though and wasn't being attacked, so maybe not...
Eh. Anyway.
Looked like Ascanius had his branch now, so she would continue talking and stuff.
With her book held up so she could read from it, she continued,
"Hail to thee, wight of Oak,
I pray to thee give this branch of your body!
Into it send thy speed,
To it bind the might of the bright runes..."
She paused for a moment, flipping through the pages for the list of all the runes she was supposed to use. Since it was apparently supposed to be all of them for it to be neutral. So much more effort, gah.

Now he had to go back to the scrap of parchment that had been in his pocket to finish out this stupid ritual. He had a branch now and that was all he NEEDED from this silly tree, but no. Ascanius had to come all the way down here, make a fool of himself and then go and read it another poem. That was what the chant was. Downright love poem-ish and he didn't want to be a part of it. Pfft.
Clearing his throat, he looked over at his girlfriend and smiled a little as if to assure he that he didn't DO this normally. Then he scowled back at this tree. Oak tree to be precise.
Right then. Time to go and do this he supposed. Ahem. ""Wight of Oak, accept my thanks. Henceforth may your might be in this branch!Magically bound to the bright runes Fehu, Uruz, Thurisaz, Ansuz, Raidho, Kenaz, Gebo, Wunjo, Hagalaz, Naudhiz, Isa, Jera, Eihwaz, Perthro, Algiz, Sowilo, Teiwaz, Berkana, Ehwaz, Mannaz, Laguz, Inguz, Dagaz, Othala., working my will with speed and wisdom." That was the LONGEST chant he had ever had this misfourtune to go ahead and say.
Baguette | there is no D in my name | TRAITORclaw | Queenie of Narnia
Her chanting was done...but looking over at Ascanius, apparently there would be even more of it coming. Dear Merlin, why? So much chanting and talking to something that couldn't actually talk back or respond or anything... Yeah, she wasn't gonna get over that yet. She still thought it was weird. Probably should stop complaining but...well, it gave her something to do beyond just roboticly doing the assignment, so she would continue her mental whining.
Penelope looked at her book again to see if she could finally get her branch...and it seemed she could. But there was also something about chanting something that she didn't really understand and something about paint, which she didn't have. Well...she was gonna get the branch anyway.
She looked around the trunk for a good one...and quickly found one that looked good, though it was quite a few feet above her. She could still cut it though? She didn't have to actually be able to REACH it...
Her wand was drawn and pointed at the branch. "Diffindo!" The spell sliced right through it and she caught the falling branch quickly with both hands. There, that wasn't too hard.

Very well knowing the difference between a statue and a feast, the dementor continued zig zagging around after the young boy. They were playing a game of chase! Wasn't it FUN? Right up until another light was produced, not as bright as the others. It swooped around, flying right through the patronus, dispersing it instantly.
No more fun chasing for the students. They found something better to do. A way into the castle.
Rattle rattle rattle rattle.

Watching the Dementors and Minerva, Asher didn't know what else to do. He was cold, he was scared, and he wanted to go home. With great relief, Asher saw the dementors move away from him and...oh, no...towards the castle. Not what he wanted. They were supposed to leave.
He looked to Minerva and she started yelling at him. The cold was slowly lifting, but his little heart sank. He hand't listened to her and he had probably made it worse. "I...I...I'm so sorry" he sobbed. He felt his little body being grasped in a giant hug and began to sob harder.
He really hadn't meant to make things worse. He was only trying to do the right thing. He had been so cold and wasn't thinking properly. "Please forgive me."

I wish a professor could have seen your act of bravery... You just scared me to death is all. .." She tried to compose herself, but Minerva was just beat this really took everything out of her.
Looking around, "Do you see my bag anywhere? The chocolate in it will make you feel better. Less cold and upset I promise." but the problem was where was the bag. She wanted to get up and look for it, but her legs just didn't want to move at the moment she just wanted to sit and rest. "Plus I'm the one that should be saying sorry.. I'm the older one, I should have been able to protect you better, but they got to you anyway and now in the school." Tears were still falling over her cheeks.. She felt like such a failure.

Having spent much of the day outside near the Butterfly Garden working on his Gandr, Ethan headed back towards the castle to get a bite to eat before working on it anymore. He had lost track of time out there, trying to get his homework done, and hadn't realized how incredibly hungry he was until he heard his stomach growling.
The boy figured he could at least take a break then figure out what more he needed to do to be finished. He found himself actually enjoying the assignment he had put off till near the end of term, especially the botanical aspects of the work, and professed internally to keep working after he had eaten. Crossing through the pathways, Ethan headed toward the castle and neared the courtyard, his eyes wandering to the figures sitting there. Or huddled, was more like it.
The scene struck him as curious for some reason and he kept his eyes trained on them as he came closer.. recognition becoming more apparent. "Min..?" he called out, rather concerned as he realized one of the balled up figures was her now that he was right there. Was she crying? He knew that she had been rather down recently from things out of her control, but was this from that or something else? "Did something happen?" He looked rather apprehensively between her and the stricken-looking younger student, first year maybe.. before sitting down next to his girlfriend and resting a hand on her back. What went on here?

She needed to stop this self pity party that she was having at the moment and get Asher into the castle and somewhere safe, though she wasn't sure where that was at the moment since she just watched Dementors enter. They were in the castle, what were they here for. She shivered thinking about it. The headmistress or a professor had to be told, someone had to be warned. They lucked out this time.. They didn't have anyone to protect them like Professor awesome or Professor J. She had enough focus now to realize how lucky they truly were.
She heard her name and her brain jumped out of all the thoughts. Was her mind playing tricks on her.. Ethan wasn't around, but that was him.. Feeling a hand on her back she looked up and blinked through tears. "Oh Ethan..." She flew her arms around him and hugged him tightly. More tears fell down her face as she clung to him. "I.. I was out here and dementors.. They came and attacked us or acted like they were going to." She felt confused at the fact that they did do some things, but not what she saw them do to Hadley.
"I got them off of Harley and myself, but then they went after Asher.. I was able to get Sonea out of here and tried to be a diversion to get Asher out.. " She took a few breaths trying to calm her voice. "But.. Asher seemed to be the smarter one today.. He made the statues go at them and they backed off, but.. Ethan..." She looked at him in horror now.. "They are in the castle.. They left us and went in the castle. I failed trying to get them away and now.. " She trailed off knowing they were in the castle and could take on anyone that came near them.
He was cold, sad, and exhausted. His entire body was shaking with adrenaline and he didn't know weather to run around screaming or collapse into a pile on the ground and cry...well, cry some more.
"It's nobody's fault. Other than the Dementors. Why are they here? Why do they keep trying to come after us? Where are the professors?!?"
Asher stayed close to Minerva. He wasn't going to be alone for anything. "Your bag? I don't know what happened to your bag." Just as he was about to suggest they go and look for it, another boy came along. He seemed to make Minerva light up in a way that only a girl that likes a boy does.
"What are we going to do now?" Not really speaking to either of them. He felt utterly lost and hopeless. Hogwarts was supposed to be safe. It was supposed to be the best year of his life. Dementors were not a part of the best year of his life. Nope. He had also lost all trust in the professors. He wondered where they had been and why they didn't come to help them.

He had ONE last thing to do before the other stuff came along and stuff. Yeah, it was stripping the bark off of his Gandr and putting it in a small pouch. Why the directions were so specific about the POUCH size he didn't care at all, but he was going to do just that. Though part of him, just to be a jerk, wanted to use a large pouch. What was Botros gonna? Chase after him with a cane? Heh. No.
Ahem, anyway. He used his wand and started to diffindo parts of his Gandr so that he could just finish this up. With each wand motion more of the bark came off so that it was somewhat smoothing out. Everything was still bumpy, but that was something he would have to work on later, smoothing it down.
A few more spells were cast until he was bark free of his Gandr. Taking out a small patch, he gathered up his shavings and threw them in the pouch. He wasn't sure why he was going to need them later, but he was just going to go along and trust that he would need them at some point 'cause he hadn't read the instructions. Well, not really.
He skimmed them.
But now that he had everything he needed he was going to go BACK down to the Dungeons and write out his song. He'd be back to sing it to the tree, but until then he was leaving.
Walking over to Pen, he gave her a quick kiss and said, "I'll see you in a bit. Be back in twenty minutes." And then he was off.

Penelope was consulting her textbook again now that she had her branch. She felt like she had already done a whole lot, and yet there was still loads left to do. Ugh. Skimming over the rest of the steps was almost painful, there was SO much she still had to do. Just when she was hoping she would be close to being done. And now it looked like she had another verse to chant...
But suddenly she was being kissed.
She quickly kissed her boyfriend back and then waved a little - as much as she could with a book and a tree branch in her hands - and said, "Okay, see ya soon," before he was off. She wasn't sure what he was off to do (and she wasn't sure she wanted to know because she'd have to go get it done next), so for now she just focused on the step she was on.
"Wight of Oak, accept my thanks.
Henceforth may your might be in this branch!
Magically bound to the bright runes..."
Flipping quickly back to the right pages...
"...Fehu, Uruz, Thurisaz, Ansuz, Raidho, Kenaz, Gebo, Wunjo, Hagalaz, Naudhiz, Isa, Jera, Eihwaz, Perthro, Algiz, Sowilo, Teiwaz, Berkana, Ehwaz, Mannaz, Laguz, Inguz, Dagaz, and Othala,
Working my will with speed and wisdom."
So. Many. Runes.
But this part was done now, right? She'd thanked it and chanted the verse, so all good now.

So... the Courtyard. That would be a good enough place to work on Divination homework, right?
Clutching onto his bag, Alec walked cautiously over towards a bench, looking this way and that as he went. He really didn't want to encounter yet another group of those soul sucking creatures, especially since he was completely alone here save from a couple of people here and there.
... But... Divination. Palm reading. This wasn't going to be hard, yeah?
He sat down on the bench and pulled out his things from his bag. It was probably a good thing he had copied the notes about his hand from Hulk because... the boy hadn't managed to find her. And it was only half way up to the Gryffindor Common Room that he had realised that he didn't know the password. So... he was here. Homework. Yeah.
So... life line was next. He flicked to the correct page in his textbook and glanced down at the diagram. The life line was the one near the thumb... okay. He glanced down at his left hand and frowned slightly. Curvy... yeah, he'd give it that. And it was sort of short too! Unless... was it meant to be a general idea of a short life line or was he meant to compare the line to, say, the length of his palm? And what if it ran close to the edge of his palm but wasn't straight? What was he meant to do about that?
... Frown.
Shrugging, he scribbled down some notes before moving on to the next and last line. The Fate Line. The big long line that ran down the middle of his palm. Deep line... he scribbled that piece of information down in his notes before looking back at his palm. ... And... there was nothing else. He only had a deep line? That was it?
... Well... okay.

Ella was trying her best to be and to exercise each day not only cause of DADA stuff but because she was feeling a bit antsy lately what with everything going on at school and she didn't like sitting around. It just gave her mind a chance to run wild.
Deciding to take a page from Professor Romanos' book, the sixteen year old headed out to the courtyard to do some yoga. The weather was nicer now and she figured it couldn't hurt to enjoy the sun and be productive. She'd even brought a little mat that Gran had sent from home to work on. See? Totally legit.
The blonde began by stretching, wanting to make sure she didn't pull a muscle while she tried to fold herself into pretzel-like shapes. Merlin, why did yoga have to be so hard?

Now he could just... move on, yeah?
That was what he was going to do. And just... ignore all the weirdness with his Birth Hand Readings. Because some of it was weird. Really really weird! But... that was just the theme of some of the readings in Divination, right? Some of them just ended up weird.
Shrugging, Alec looked down at his right hand, the one that was meant to be showing his future. Comparing the lines on the two hands showed him that they were actually some differences between them. ... Weird. Was it the same with everyone's...?
... Right. Heart Line. Okay. What did his right hand show about his love life in the future? He looked between his hand and the textbook, occasionally jotting a few things down in his notes here and there. His lips twisted into a small frown at some of the words that the reading seemed to be indicating. Like emotional trauma? Selfish in love? What?
WHAT?
WHAT?!

Streeeeeeetch.
Mo wasn't really planning on yoga, but sometimes things happened and he was a very go-with-the-flow type. Plus his sister informed him that being flexible was really important for Quidditch reasons, so even if was hard and sometimes stupid, it was worth doing.
Plus watching other people do yoga was fascinating, okay?
So when he spotted Ella doing yoga in the courtyard, Mo strolled right up to her as he summoned the towel!mat thing from his dormitory. "La Bella Ella... are you any good at yoga? 'Cause I was thinking if you were, I'd just stand here and do what you're doing and be good at it too and it would make me all limber and stuff."
Not remotely creepy for him to invite himself along for the ride. Ella and Mo were friendly, and they were both Quidditch players, and athletes worked out together. That was just a fact.

So...the worst thing about yoga was actually doing the yoga. Like, it was all fine and good in theory but attempting it, actually attempting it without looking like a complete fool was kind of difficult. It didn't help that the blonde now had an audience. Mo wasn't the type to make fun if she fell over or something, right?
"Hi, Senor Mo!" Grin! "Well, I'm not exactly an expert or anything but I figured if I stick to the easier poses, I won't hurt myself too badly." And if he felt like that was a solid plan, she was definitely up for working with him.
"I guess...the tree pose would be a good place to start? Balancing on one leg isn't so bad, yeah?" And with that, the blonde moved her leg so that the sole of her right foot was resting on her left inner thigh. She wobbled a bit but got her balance after a moment or two. Then she brought her arms above her head with her palms touching.

The thing with future readings was... well... they were a little like warnings, right? And even if they turned out to be a little weird, that didn't mean that it couldn't still come true, yeah? See, that was the scary part about all of this.
Frowning, Alec continued with his reading, moving onto the Head Line. This one didn't seem to be that different to the Head Line which... made the boy feel slightly better. Because, according to him, in the Birth Reading, the Head Line was probably the most true to him than the others.
The Life Line was next and one quick comparison between the Life Lines of his two hands told him that this one was going to be quite different. That was a good sign, yeah? Sometimes good can be different? Like... like... HEY! The break in his line meant a sudden change in lifestyle! Did that mean... that no more studying? That was DEFINITELY a GOOD sign.
Feeling a tiny bit better about this -- NO MORE STUDYING AND MORE PIZZA -- the sixteen year old moved onto the next reading of... his Fate Line. One that changed course for some weird reason, signifying that there were going to be changes in his life from external forces. ... Well... how far ahead did this future reading mean? Was it talking about next week or next year or sometime in the next ten years?
... He... had too many questions.

Blink. She was doing it.
Breatheeeeee. Just breatheeeee.
"I don't feel like a tree when I do it. I'd feel more like a tree laying on the ground with my hands in good dirt, but that's not a yoga pose," Mo informed Ella as he removed his socks and shoes and carefully folded his outer shirt on top of his satchel. He took a few calming breathes before following Ella's lead - leg up with foot resting against his thigh and arms stretched out overhead.
He only wobbled once, which was a vast improvement.
"Psst. Ella. Do you feel like a better Quidditch player because you make a good tree?" Mo whispered at Ella as he moved from the tree pose to the triangle pose, keeping both arms straight out as he lowered his leg and reached down to touch his toes.

Dribble... dribble... dribble...
Man, this was difficult. Alec fondly remembered his primary school days where dribbling balls was a norm for football practices but... he had been at Hogwarts for five years already! FIVE! And in that time, he hadn't been asked to dribble anything, let alone a ball that was bigger than the size of his fist. Plus, his fingers were much more accustomed to the size of a Snitch, not the size of this big, scarlet ball.
Frown.
The sixteen year old stepped out into the courtyard as he continued to dribble slowly. The Quidditch pitch wasn't too far away from this place and yet, dribbling from there had taken ages. Far... FAR too long. But at least there wasn't a time limit to this sort of thing, yeah? It wasn't as if Romanos has said--
BLINK. Weren't they meant to do this in under seven minutes? How was that possible?!
Yeah... he needed the help of a Chaser. Or just someone.

Kace made his way to the Courtyard. He noticed Alec there. He seemed to be dribbling something. It looked like the quaffle and he seemed to be having trouble. Kace smiled and chuckled to himself, he was used to the little tiny snitch balls. It was understandable.
He cleared his throat and said, "Hey Alec nice dribbling skills." He had to give him some confidence boost right?
"You ready to do this activity under 7 minutes?" he asked him. Kace accepted the challenge. He knew Alec was fast, so having his speed and skills and Kace's chaser catching skills...yeah... thought they could do it!

The sound of someone clearing his throat made Alec fumble with the Quaffle and end up letting it roll away a little. He hopped forwards and stopped it with his foot before turning back and looking over towards...
"Hey mate!" he said, grinning at the boy, "I'm not doing that great, actually but thanks!" It meant a lot to the older boy. Really. As for the younger Puff's questions about the activity... "Yeah! Come on, let's do this one together, yeah?" It would be like their way of working together... but off the pitch.
"Ready?" And before waiting for a response, the boy started dribbling off. Come on Penguin!Kace!

Awwww Kace did not like the sound of that. He didn't like to hear that his friends were not doing well. "Aww i am sorry to hear that Alec." he half smiled to him. But at least he was honest with him so that was good!
Oh so he was ready?!?! Kace was in his ready position but Alec was already dribbling. Kace was following him and asked "Hey do you know where we are going??" Then he tried to get the quaffle away from him and tried to dribble it on his own. But no such luck yet.

He... was sorry to hear that Alec was doing not so great with the dribbling? Alec reached over and ruffled the younger boy's hair. "It's not bad! And I'm sure you're better at it!" The boy was a Chaser, he had to be used to the Quaffle, yeah?
"Yeah! To the lake! Onwards, my young Skywalker!" ... Tag... would be proud of that little reference, yeah? Hadn't that blonde leprechaun pretended to be Yoda in one of their many conversations? Shaking his head, Alec grinned down at the Quaffle before saying, "You're okay over there, right?" Alec was the one who was meant to be taking care of him, being the older one of the two and all.

Kace chuckled when he misunderstood the question. "Woops sorry Alec. I know your dribbling must be swell..." he started when he felt the hair ruffle. He smiled underneath it. He wasn't mad that was a good thing! He knew he was trained for dribbling. He could do this!
Kace dribbled his quaffle
Dribbled....dribbled...dribbled....dribbled....
Then he heard Alec talking to him.
"Alright to the lake!" he said. Wait...he made a Star Wars reference. He smiled and chuckled at it. "Nice reference." he played with her. "Yup i am okay." he smiled to his buddy. He was glad that he was taking care of him. He was happy to have a great friend.

Ella grinned at Mo but tried not to move too much cause tree pose reasons. "I think that'd make you a worm." She informed him cheerfully, eyes straight ahead so she could try and maintain her balance. Ella liked worms. Well, not real worms, more worms of the gummy variety. Speaking of, could she eat and do yoga at the same time? Was that allowed or frowned upon? She'd need to ask Romanos about this because it was a good thing to know.
Oh..and there was a whispering Mo to respond to, yeah?
The blonde glanced sideways at the boy with nice hair and she laughed, letting her leg back on to the ground carefully. "Not really. I guess I feel more connected to my broom, though?" Y'know, cause brooms were made of wood and trees...yeah. "Do you?" She whispered back as she followed suit and moved into the triangle pose, trying to focus on touching her toes.
