Default The Greenhouses: Herbology Lesson Two

Herbology Lesson Two

It was back to the greenhouses for another lesson on herbs, only, Professor Bentley wasn't waiting for them inside the doorway like she usually did. Instead, there were work stations set up with equipment laid out neatly. Stools had been arranged in a group on the main floor nearest the raised flowerbeds of carefully arranged herbs.

The portable blackboard instructs:

Now the amber color was supposed to darken, or so the instructions said. So Gideon watched his mixture for telltale hints and when the liquid did indeed appear a darker color then before, the seventh year took that as a good sign. All was well with his work and he could move on to the next thing he had to do and that was add a handful of fluxweed and knotgrass into the pot.

They were certainly not brewing a potion...not with a handful as a unit of measure.

Taking note of both ingrediants in his supply, Gideon took a hold of some of the fluxweed, adding it first as instructed. Might not be a potion but he was still careful of doing it exactly as stated. Then he moved onto the knotgrass, grabbing a handful of it and adding it as well. Finally stirring the concoction to let it all combine with the previously added items. Three steps down...several more to go.

The Gryffindor was usually a very patient lion, but waiting 30 minutes when she had a Laura working nearby was...dangerous? Scary? Unpredictable? All of the above was probably the proper answer...

Oh, that was a relief. "Thank you, Professor Bently," Kurumi said as her cheeks flushed slightly at the compliment hidden in the woman's words. Feeling rather confident with the spell, the seventh year rolled up her sleeves and then performed the charm very carefully on her pot, checking the temperature every few seconds with her hands until the pot felt about the same temperature as her hand. That should do it!

Picking up her strainer, Kurumi began to pour some of the minsecticide into her spray bottle when Laura spoke up.
SPOILER!!: parchment

1) Once your pot of water has begun to boil, start by adding the chrysanthemum and nettle tea leaves. Stir occasionally.

2) As the colour of the water turns amber, add two generous pinches of cayenne pepper, a generous drizzle of neem oil and a splash of apple cider vinegar. Stir occasionally.

3) As the colour darkens, take a handful of fluxweed and knotgrass, then stir.

4) Take a whole garlic bulb, slice it in half (diffindo) then drop it into the solution.

5) Add 3-4 whole dreid lacewing flies and a small (yes, thick) drizzle/plop of bubotuber pus.

6) Simmer, stir and leave to cool for about half an hour (in which time you clean up your work space and return any unused items to the stores cupboard.)

7) Once your Minsecticide has cooled, strain it into a spray bottle.

"Just a second," Kurumi smiled as she poured the rest of her solution through the strainer and into the spray bottle. Once she was done and had cleaned the strainer and pot again with magic, the Gryffindor moved closer to Laura and and blinked in confusion. "Laura...what happened to the water I conjured?!" Honestly, how did Laura always manage to find herself in these situations? She HAD to be doing it on purpose.

Wand out again, Kurumi cast a silent Aguamenti and fill the pot half way. "There, now you better get to work. I'll stay behind until you are done, okay?" Since Kurumi had offered to help her and all. She would be a horrible person if she just left the Hufflepuff now.
Laura looked at Kurumi. "I have no idea what had happened." Laura sighed she wasn't doing this on purpose and she really didn't know what she was suppost to have done to upset Kurumi.

Laura was beginning not to like this Professor much, she slowly nudged upto Kurumi and looked at her work. "I ain't doing it on purpose I swear." Laura added the chrysanthemum and nettle tea leaves like she was told to and she quickly started to stir it. "What next Kurumi?"

Nothing specific was suppose to happen for Dylan to move on to this next step....So....Oh, garlic bulb, where art thou?

It was a bit tricky for him to spot at first, seeing as it was a smaller object...but he found it eventually.

Laying it on the workspace counter, Dylan pulled his wand again. With a not-as-intense downward slashing motion, the smelly bulb split in two. A second later, the Slytherin was adding it into the pot.

Boom.

No stirring was indicated this time...

Moving on...

Satisfied with his stirring and the mixture it was dealing with, Gideon glanced at his notes to find out the next step to be completed. One cut garlic bulb coming right up. He picked out the whitish knobby round item and brought it to the forefront, switching stirring rod for wand in the process. Lining it up so he could make a smooth cut, the Gryffindor counted off a silent 3-count before proceeding.

"Diffindo!" he cast with a downward striking motion like he was supposed to, the garlic bulb cleaving neatly in half. Setting aside his wand, Gideon then picked up both halves and carefully dropped them into the cooking liquid.

One...two.

Garlic soup anyone?

Once again, there wasn't an indicator for the next step, so Dylan had to guess...Merlin, the guess work...

5) Add 3-4 whole dried lacewing flies and a small (yes, thick) drizzle/plop of bubotuber pus.

Three to four.....That wasn't as strange to him. He assumed it was based on size. If they were bigger lacewing flies, it'd be three...If they were smaller, four. Yes! He could put logic to this...For whatever reason, this made the Slytherin extremely happy.

Humming to himself as he worked. Dylan scoured the ingredients for the flies, They were found easily enough...and they did vary in size. Deciding just to do a mixture of big and small, he chose two bigger ones...and then two smaller, tossing them in.

Small thick drizzle/plop...BLINK.

....Not thinking about it.......

Picking that up, he tried to carefully extract this.......drizzle/plop by hovering it over the pot. It took about five minutes for the substance within to shift enough to allow a plop...and that plop was a nice size. So...

COUGH.

Moving on...

Sierra re-read step two in the instructions, noting that her mixture should now be an amber color. She looked at it, her eyebrows wrinkling inward as she thought about the color. What was amber anyway? Orangish-brown? Sort of. She tilted her head sideways. Yes, it was an amber color. Perfect. She was running out of time and didn't have the time to start all the way over.

She reached for the cayenne pepper and pinched into it. With one generous pinch in between her fingers, she moved her hand over the mixture. She sprinkled the pepper inside. She repeated the step again, since she was meant to have two sprinkles of the pepper. She added in a drizzle of the neem oil then a splash of the apple cider vinegar. Dear Merlin, this was a lot of steps.

All the while, she'd been stirring occasionally, so with that, she was ready for step three.

Again with the non-precise measurements and using your opinion on just what to use. It was probably a good thing Gideon wasn't so much of a potions geek to feel too uncomfortable with the uncertainty. Given the task at hand, this step was certainly one of the more...unpleasant ones. The lacewing flies he could handle easily, the prefect picking up 4 of rather average size from teh collection and adding them to the pot. It was the bubotuber pus that was something even he wasn't a fan of.

Thankful for his gloves (and the fact it wasn't after a meal), Gideon did his best to push past the oily, petrol smell and picked up the container it was holed up in. Tilting it to allow the plop, the seventh year wound up having to use his stirer to extract a decent amount like requested. When it dropped with a "plop" into his conconction, he righted the jar and covered it once more, the smell abaited even just a little.

There...only a couple of more steps.

The grass disappeared into the pot, and Vivi waited a long moment to see if anything would happen before reaching for the bulb of garlic. It sort of felt like this would be the turning point... the stuff brewing in her pot couldn't possibly smell good once the garlic was tossed in. It would start to smell like flower pizza in a minute.

She sliced the bulb of garlic with a flick of her wand, pleased that Diffindo was one of those spells she'd mastered non-verbally. It ought to be, considering how often they used it over the years. Why cut it before putting it in the pot, though? Did it make a difference? Vivi lifted the garlic to her nose and sniffed gingerly before chucking both halves into her pot.

That was easy enough. Next?

Rereading over all the instructions...everything had been completed thus far to the best of his ability. Dylan could confidently say that, yes.

It was almost finished. Only two more steps left..and then the Slytherin Captain would be DONE with the guess work. Full of win, it was...in Star Wars speak...

6) Simmer, stir and leave to cool for about half an hour (in which time you clean up your work space and return any unused items to the stores cupboard.)

All things which were easy enough. Yes!

Grabbing the end of his stirring rod, Dylan made sure everything was good and mixed, switching from clockwise to counter-clockwise. One could never be too sure about these things...After about three minutes of nonstop stir stir and a "Finite." to that chaudensis charm, Dylan left it to 'cool'...He had a workstation to clean and thirty minutes to do so.

...But JUST to be sure he didn't forget or let it 'cool' too long...

Bringing his wrist up, the Slytherin mashed a button on the side of his watch several times...and when it flashed 30:00 MINS, he started the clean up task. The first thing he did was pull his crystal stirring rod, scourgifying it before returning it to his bag. It was for backup and emergencies. VERY IMPORTANT.

...Then he went about closing containers and wiping surfaces; scourgify was used in abundance. Walking everything back to Professor Bentley's dry storage, he tried to keep it organized. Lafay was nuts about her ingredients cupboard...Professor Bentley couldn't be much different...

Once the task of cleaning and reorganizing was complete, Dylan eyed the pot. Checking his watch, he had about two minutes to spare...

Sierra waited for a bit longer to give the mixture time to darken. She tried not to stare at it, because, like they say--a watched pot never boils. Not that she wanted her mixture to boil, but the saying pretty much meant that if you stand by waiting for something to happen, it never will. In no time, the mixture had darkened. So farm so good. Now to just keep it that way.

She looked at the instructions, noting that it was time for the fluxweed and knotgrass. Those were two ingredients she was more than familiar with. They'd used them lots in Potions. She reached for the fluxweed and added it in. Next was the knotgrass. She tossed it in, as well, and then set to work stirring some more. This wasn't too hard. It wasn't much different than brewing a potion, and she was great at that.

Four more steps...

With another glance at his notes, Gideon was informed they were to let it simmer and cool for a half hour. So the Gryffindor checked the heat, giving it a quick "Chau-den-sis," to adjust the heat accordingly. He then gave it a simple stir or two and left it alone as directed so that it could cool and be ready for him when the time was roughly up. Now to make everything else neat again while he waited for for lack of anything else to do to keep himself busy. Not to mention Bentley had thought ahead and added it to the instructions to make sure they thought of it.

First he gathered the various containers he had used ingrediants from, checking to make sure they were all properly closed so as not to spill anything or not properly store what was inside. Gideon then double checked he hadn't left a mess on them, using the cloth from before to wipe off the pus container as well as the vinegar. Getting up from his seat, the seventh year then moved and set about returning them all to their rightful homes.

Finally he returned back to his work area, straightening up his own things and making sure his notes were complete. "Scourgify!" Gideon cast upon the wooden surface to make sure everything was relatively neat and tidy. Now he just had to wait.

Take a whole garlic bulb and slice it in half...

It was sort of strange to be slicing ingredients with her wand and diffindo. She was used to doing that sort of thing with a different tool in Potions. This wasn't Potions, though, no matter how much it reminded her of it. She reached for a garlic bulb then laid it out before her. She didn't want to accidentally diffindo the wrong object and land in a whole heap of trouble.

She flicked her wand out its holster and aimed it toward the bulb. "Diffindo!" she said. When she looked, the bulb was in two pieces, and another looked showed her that nothing else had been damaged. She dropped one half into the solution, watched it get good and settled in, and then she dropped the second half in.

........About two minutes later............

When the watch on his wrist starting beeping annoyingly, Dylan took a deep breath and stood. Time to get this stuff bottled...

Strainer...Check.

Spray Bottle...Check.

Inevitably, it was going to make a mess. The strainer was way too big for the top of the spray bottle...and if Dylan started pouring this stuff over it, it was going to go everywhere. So, what the Slytherin needed was a funnel...

Or better yet...Snatching up the strainer, he used his wand to cover most of the holes in the bottom, except for the center-most ones. Proud of his quick thinking, he checked the concocted and was pleased to see/feel it had cooled. Laying it over the bottle, he did some weird maneuvering to get it all to stay put whilst pouring the minsecticide into it.

SUCCESS!

Once it was fully in, he retrieved the top and screwed it into place tightly.

SCOURGIFY for all the equipment and such...

DONE.

"Professor, where shall I put it once finished?" Once again, if she'd said as much, Dylan hadn't heard. He'd been too in the zone...

Yup. It was waaaaaaaaay more pungent than ever before. Vivi tried to breathe through her mouth and wondered if potions was meant to punish short people. It was just UNFAIR. Her nose was closer to the stench than normal people.

Three OR four lacewing flies next... which was frustrating. Was it three? Was it four? Vivi went with four, on the theory that if one fly was good and two was better, than three was great and four was AWESOME. Obviously. At least the flies made it feel more like a potion than a bad stew.

And bubotuber pus... that made it feel potion-y too. One thick 'plop' of the stuff, which was the first time she approved of vague measurements. Measuring out viscous liquids made her hands ache, and Vivi wasn't in the mood for the slooooow slooooow process when she was still fighting to catch up. She took a rather strange pleasure from dropping the glob into the stew and watching it disappear.

SPOILER!!: Instructions
1) Once your pot of water has begun to boil, start by adding the chrysanthemum and nettle tea leaves. Stir occasionally.

2) As the colour of the water turns amber, add two generous pinches of cayenne pepper, a generous drizzle of neem oil and a splash of apple cider vinegar. Stir occasionally.

3) As the colour darkens, take a handful of fluxweed and knotgrass, then stir.

4) Take a whole garlic bulb, slice it in half (diffindo) then drop it into the solution.

5) Add 3-4 whole dried lacewing flies and a small (yes, thick) drizzle/plop of bubotuber pus.

6) Simmer, stir and leave to cool for about half an hour (in which time you clean up your work space and return any unused items to the stores cupboard.)

7) Once your Minsecticide has cooled, strain it into a spray bottle.

Checking the time on his watch, Gideon soon found his time for waiting was done and he could finish up the activity. Now he need to bottle the cool liquid so it could actually be used. Taking off the cover to the bottle, he then rested the strainer on top. He then took hold of the pot and manuevered it just so. Ever so carefully upending it over both bottle and strainer to pour into the receptical, his hand steady to do his best not to make too much of mess. The prefect found as long as he didn't let it flow too fast it stayed in the center of the strainer and thus into the bottle.

When the bottle was full as much as it was hold, Gideon righted the pot and set it back down on the worktable."Scourgify," he cast once more, cleaning out the very last remnant of the minsecticide that rested on the very bottom of the pot and clearing the strainer. Getting up again, he returned them both where they had come from as well.

Once that was all done, he gathered his belongings and returned them to his school bag, slinging it over his shoulder. He took hold of the spray bottle in his other hand seeing as he would need it for the task force as Bentley had mentioned. "Good day Professor Bentley. Thanks for class," Gideon said as he made his way up to the front of class. With that said, he walked the last few feet and exited the classroom.

AHHHHHHHHHH.

Sierra was feeling the pressure as she realized that the time to get this done was quickly approaching. She flailed about a little then took a few deep breaths to try and compose herself. Okay, okay. So what now?

Add 3-4 whole dreid lacewing flies and a small (yes, thick) drizzle/plop of bubotuber pus.

Sierra moved around quickly, taking care not to bump into the pot, and gathered up the dried, lacewing flies. Three to four? ...but what if you didn't know which was better? She could add in three, but she could also add in four... How did Herbology sudden become so stressful?!

In the end, she tossed in only three, going with the belief that 'less was more'. Then she scooped up a plop of bubotuber pus then dropped it into the mixture, as well.

Two more steps!

Waiting for an answer...Dylan eyed his classmates as they were all in different stages of finishing...

He'd rushed a bit...but meh. Whatever. It was done...Merlin, it felt good to be back...

While he stood there...stupidly holding his full spray bottle...he spied a certain Slytherin...with long, brown hair...and total determination on her face.

Sierra...

He contemplated joining her...

Woah... Eliza's head snapped forward and her eyes re-focused on her pot of boiling minsecticide. Did I...? Yes, she had dozed off while waiting for her mixture to turn colors. She shook her head a bit to snap back to reality. Looking down into her pot she saw that the color had changed and was indeed ready for her to move on. Good thing the professor said nothing needed to be too exact here... She must've been out of it for a while because most of the students were close to done with their mixtures.

She really wasn't sure what a "pinch", "drizzle", or "splash" meant, since everyone's interpretations and hand and/or finger sizes were bound to be different. How could this be so imprecise? Couldn't we just throw a random bunch of these things in a pot and call it good then, since none of these measurements matter? She was a little perplexed with this whole idea. Everything had a certain degree to which it mattered and a certain degree when it was too much or too little, right? Oh well. If she wants a loosey goosey measurement, that's what I'll do!

She reached into the cayenne pepper, pinched some and flung it in the pot. She repeated that action and next grabbed the bottle of oil and drizzled it all over, just like she would have done to a bowl of ice cream with chocolate syrup. Then she picked up the apple cider vinegar, opened the top, and did a quick wrist flip to spill some of the contents out. This was kind of fun actually. She felt more like she was painting or making some piece of art than making a useful product for plants. She could get used to the whole being imprecise thing. It was way less stressful than potions, even if it made no logical sense whatsoever.

In a matter of seconds, Sierra had gone from cool, calm, and collected to nearly insane. Why? Well, because somebody didn't work too well under pressure, and she'd suddenly gotten under way too much pressure. No use in thinking about that now, though. She was wasting time she didn't even have.

Reading the next set of instructions, she blinked. HALF AN HOUR?!

She stirred her mixture, and all the while a frown began appearing across her face. She flailed about a little and the began pacing in front of the pot. Thirty minutes?! She eyed the professor, wondering if the woman would run her out the area soon. She started cleaning up her work area. At least there was something to do during this time. She cleaned things, put things away, wiped up little drops of this and that. The whole nine yards. She returned unused items to the cupboard then headed back to her pot.

Finally, after what felt like thirty HOURS had passed, Sierra was ready to move on.

Sierra put her hands around the pot, but NOT on it, and checked to see if the mixture had cooled. There wasn't any heat coming from it, and it didn't even feel warm, so cool it must be. She took a strainer and poured the liquid through it and into a spray bottle. Pretty soon, the spray bottle was full, and she closed it up so none of the hard-earned mixture would be wasted.

Now the only thing she needed to do was clean her pot and the strainer. Aiming her wand toward the pot, she said, "Scourgify!" Then she did the same for the strainer. Pretty soon, her little work area was all nice and shiny and just as it had been when she's arrived.

WHEW. All done.

OOC: Sorry for the double post. The activity is supposed to end now, and nobody else had posted after me.

Dylan eyed his fellow Leader a moment longer before deciding to make his way over. She seemed almost finished anyway...So, perhaps they could walk back to the common room together...

He also had a ton of homework to do...and Sierra was good at that type of thing.

The Captain was utilizing her strengths. NOT using her. SMIRK.

"Greingoth, when you're ready, would you like to walk back together...?"...so you can help me do my homework?

Simmer and stir? Vivi reduced the heat on her pot and gave it a last vigorous stir and watched the petals and grass and a lump of what was probably garlic rise to the surface and spin briefly before disappearing back into the depths again.

Well, this wasn't the time to stare into the pot like it had all the truths of the universe floating inside. She now had half an hour to clean up her station and pull faces at her neighbors. And maybe pocket some of those lacewing flies for her own private potions stores.

After wiping down any splashes and spills from the workbench, Vivi perused the ingredients she had left to see if any could be returned from whence they came. Definitely the rest of the pus and the unused liquids. She'd used nearly all of the flies and grasses, and had only ever had a set amount of some of the other supplies. Those she could returned were swiftly put away, and then Vivi came back to check on her cooling mess of non-potion.

The color was continuing to darken, so she plunged her hand into the flaxweed, grabbed a "handful" - which was pretty full in her case - and dumped it in. Next she grabbed a handful of knotgrass and did the same. It hadn't really said to mix them together into one handful, so she decided it could just be one handful of each. Again, it didn't really matter right? She watched the pieces float around in a whirlpool of randomness as she stirred the pot some more. Let's see...what's next? She looked to her notes in anticipation of the next ingredient to add.

The pot was nearly cool, and her half hour was up. Vivi put her hand briefly on the side of the pot before deciding she was done. Or very nearly done. Just one strained stew!potion away from finishing.

She strained the mixture into the proffered spray bottle, managing to spill very little in the process. Some spill, though... she was only PRETTY MUCH awesome. Using the cloth she'd cleaned the workbench with, Vivi wiped down the outside of her bottle and set it to the side.

Now for the pot... One good Scourgify left the pot empty and clean, and Vivi set it back on the workbench with the remaining supplies. And now she was the proud owner of her own bottle of minsecticide, hmm? She could only imagine what the professor had in mind for them.

Aha, she thought as she read to herself. She was going to get to use a new spell. At least the notes had told her what it was this time, so she wouldn't need any help learning it. It sounded easy enough. A spell that cut probably required you to point your wand at the place you wanted the object to be cut at right? She picked up a garlic bulb, sat it in the table in front of her, and pointed her wand at the center. It wasn't exactly an easy object to get halves out of, but she decided she would try to cut across the widest part. She held her wand steadily and said, "Diffindo" in a semi quiet voice. She wasn't sure, but she thought maybe if you said the spell too loud or powerfully it might just cut through the whole table! Maybe she was being silly though. All she knew was that the garlic fell into two pieces, to her pleasure, and she put each of them into the solution. Easy as pie, she thought. Though I much prefer cake.

SPOILER!!: Professor Bentley!

An apology! ... at least she didn't have to play mind games with the girl, it was the last thing she wanted to do. "Apology accepted, but perhaps think twice before raising your voice at a Professor." It was a beyond foolish thing to do.

"Laura, do you know how many students I have? On top of that, do you know how many plants I have? What my responsibilities are? ... I cannot be held accountable for remembering little details. Besides, I asked if anybody was missing anything... you need to hold yourself accountable for your learning, because we, as Professors, can only do so much. Next time be proactive and speak up sooner, in detail! ..." Merlin. "Now go on, you have catching up to do."

Ugh...

Now... she needed to walk around, keep the blood pumping, she needed to breathe.

...

Stopping breifly at Cora's work station, Seren smiled. "Of course I'm certain," she mused.

"The minsecticide isn't something you can get wrong with inaccurate measurements, which makes the act of measuring redundant."
Taking the girls vinegar, she emptied a portion of the contents into the pot making a little splash. "There. See that's not so hard."

... Some students seemed to be motoring through the activity.

"Once you've completed the task, I want you to hold onto your spray bottles, you'll need it for the task force mission... if, you're not a member of the task force, then I suggest pitching in anyway and trying out your minsecticide in the garden, greenhouses or on a pot plat in the castle..." if they even had any. Surely the did.

"Once you're done you may be dismissed..."

OOC: The lesson will remain open for another 20 hours.

Jayden smiled, looking up at her instructor. Professor Bentley always was so... niice! But not fake nice like Professor Burbage was.... that woman was.. odd. Jayden giggled to herself, re-playing all of the oddities and all of the sing-songing that went on in that Astronomy class. Merlin. That woman could TALK.

Back to the present.
It was finally the end of class, and they were being dismissed. Well, at least those that had actually gotten their stuff finished at the moment. "Thanks for another FABULOUS class, Professor Bentley!" She called, grinning from ear to ear. As soon as this was over she was headed straight for the kitchens for tea, and then back up to the Common room for some calm. It had definitely been a hectic couple of months for her, with all of the holidays, especially Christmas!

Jayden packed up all of her things, fitting them neatly into her bag. "Bye everyone!" She called out, waving to no one in particular.
