Where The Practice Pitch
(look for the thread titled 'lesson')
Who Can Attend First Years and those who wish to brush up on their basic flying skills
What to Bring School brooms will be provided for all students to use
Any First Year who brings their own broom will lose 15 house points for breaking the long-standing school rule about First Years not being allowed brooms.
Arguing with Professor Vindictus regarding this rule will result in an automatic detention and possibly losing more points.
Professor Vindictus was the first to arrive at the lesson and had the brooms set out in two perfectly straight lines on the Practice Pitch. He stood between the two broom rows and waited patiently for the students to arrive.
Nigel was sure that this was the first step before they actually got on their borrowed brooms and actually started flying. But before that, Nigel was also really hungry for no reason and those cookies that the professor is eating look so delicious that Nigel's stomach started growling.
He started to yell "UP" with confidence and immediately the broom magically went straight up into his hand. Nigel was not surprised that this happened and possibly could get use to this if it was that easy. "What's next Professor" Nigel said because he already had the broom in his hand.

With an absent nod, Gideon moved his hand to rest still and level in the air above the broom that would be his for the duration of the class. Hopefully it wouldn't be too tempremental as school brooms were known to be at times. "UP..." he said in a clear, strong voice as he was used to, inwardly relieved as it behaved much like his own broom did, only showing a small bit of hesitance. So as it flew up to his outstretched limb, the sixth year wrapped his fingers securly around the wooden broom handle as it came near enough.

He began nibbling on the cookie as he watched the students perform the task.
Sierra had been standing around all along, yet she'd been maneuvering her way through the crowds of students in search of Vindictus. Finally, just as the others took their positions and cleared the way, she saw him just up ahead. She turned in that exact direction and made her way up. Approaching Vinny Boy, she looked up at him with her big, brown eyes.
"Professor?" she asked, her voice low so as not to be overheard by anyone but Vindictus. "I was wondering, as a fifth year and a person who's been playing Quidditch for a while, do you need an any assistance coaching the new ones? Or, if not, do you mind if I stay? I want to make sure I'm on top of my game before the first match."
...because this would be the year Slytherin made a comeback, of course.
Silvia was glad to be back in flying class. She had taken it last year, but figured it couldn't hurt to brush up on her skills. Besides, she loved flying, but she knew she probably wouldn't be very good at quidditch, so she didn't get to fly as often as she would like to. Standing next to a broom, Silvia placed her hand over the broom and in a calm but firm voice she said, "Up." The broom jumped up into her hand. Pleased that her skills didn't seem too rusty, Silvia waited for the next instructions.

Damon sighed, looking down at the broom, he hadn't been in this class since his first year. Ugh, flying, how he hated it. "Up." Of course it didn't feel like listening... "Come on now, Up!" He demanded and it still stayed down. He sighed again, Stupid broom..."UP!" That time it finally rose up into his hand... Why did he take this class again? He looked over at Taylor, oh right...

They had to talk to the broom?
Penelope couldn't decide whether that was cool or just weird.
She still stuck her right hand out though and said, "UP." The broom rolled a teensy bit but otherwise remained on the ground. Scowling, Penelope repeated the word - "UP!" - and this time the broom seemed to lift up...
...before promptly falling back to the ground.
Everyone else's had come up on the first try. Why hadn't hers?! "I think it's broken." Stupid broom.

Yawning, Beezus watched her classmates as few struggled with making their brooms rocket to their hands while a few others like herself managed to pull off the stunt without much of an effort. Of course, it was basic thing for her, and being it was her third year at Hogwarts and being on the Quidditch team, she was REALLY used to it. "Up." she uttered. The broom beside her immediately trumped up to her open hand.
Now what would be playing with today Professor V? Not more flying squirrels and spiders right? She thought apprehensively.

Kurumi literally almost groaned as her hand closed around her own broom and she looked around to see how everyone else was doing. So far it didn't seem like anyone was really struggling with their brooms, which was rather impressive all things considered.

Kurumi smiled in Penelope's direction and waved with her other hand to try and catch the girl's attention. "The same thing happened to me....all the way until I was a third year," Kurumi said. Well, maybe it had been more like until she was a fourth year, but who was counting? "Remember, everything it about intent. It sometimes helps if you visualize what you want the broom to do before to try to tell it to."
At least, that had seemed to be the solution to things in the sixth year's case....minus that term where the brooms were all supposedly cursed...

Oichi did as the professor said and put her hand over her broom, "up", The broom moved ever so lightly. Oichi held her hand ove rthe her broom again, "Up", Oichi said and broom came up a bit more but not quite enough. Oichi gritted her teeth and went for yet another go. "UUUPPP", Oichi said sternly and the broom rose up quickly and hit her in the face. "OUCH", Oichi exclaimed and rubbed her forehead and then went for one more go. She waited for her body to calm down, "UP", Oichi staid calmly but sternly and the broom rose right into her hand. Yes, I finally got it, Oichi though with a grin.
Mika had selected a broom from the broom shed and was nervous. Very nervous about her first ever experience with flying. She also thought this Professor was crazy - yes crazy. He was telling them to talk to an inanimate object. Everyone knows inanimate objects don't have ears - mouths - or any way of listening or talking back.
Alright. She was just nervous.
Placing the broom on the ground she put her right hand above it and called out "UP" like she had thought nothing happened. Maybe she had been too quiet or maybe this guy was a few pumpkins short of pumpkin juice.

Vindictus nearly choked on the cookie. Seriously! Was Slytherin trying to do him in? "If you want to participate in the lesson, Sierra, then I suggest you join in and assist like Kurumi is doing. Once everyone is in the air, perhaps you could assist those having difficulty," he replied in a raspy voice.
He grabbed another cookie. "Straddle the broom and grasp it with both hands. Make sure that you plant your feet firmly on the ground. No one, and I repeat, NO ONE, is to take off until I command."
He took a bite and continued watching.

Penelope might've just continued to glare at the evil broom, but a movement caught her eye, and her head turned immediately towards it.
It turned out to be Kurumi, and Penelope listened as she explained that the brooms had been mean to her too, which the first year found hard to believe. The broom had seemed to come so easily to her, not to mention all the others. But if that was true, Penelope was glad she wasn't alone.
Intent. Visualize. Penelope nodded and decided to close her eyes, hoping it might help the visualizing part. She imagined the broom rising into her hand as easily as Kurumi's and the others' had done. Once the picture in her mind was clear enough, she opened her eyes in the next instant and said in a much more commanding voice, "Up!" And suddenly the broom rose...and came to rest against her downturned palm. The first year gripped it before it could change its mind.
"It worked!" she exclaimed, a small smile finally reaching her face. She looked back at Kurumi. "Thanks!" she added, remembering how both Atticus and Vashti had reminded her to mind her manners and thank people when they helped her. It hadn't become a habit yet, but perhaps it would soon.

Tay straddle the broom and held it in both hands. Taylor made sure her feet were firmly on the ground. She sighed as the professor made sure to say no one will take off yet. Tay longed to fly though and she thought about the tryouts for ravenclaw... she felt that she did horrible... worse than last year...

Alyssa continued to drool and almost opened her mouth when she saw the Professor bite into another cookie. She sighed before turning back to what she was supposed to do next.
'Ah yes...it does look like we are going to fly.'Alyssa thought to herself. She quickly straddled her broom and gripped the handle with both her hands. She then looked down to make sure that her feet were planted firmly on the ground and strongly resisted the urge to kick off. She wanted so badly to be up in the air now. To free herself from her troubling thoughts.
Nigel thought finally they were one step away from flying. Nigel needed the practice for Quidditch so why not. He straddled the broom and grasped it with both hands waiting for Professor Vindictus to give the go ahead to start flying.

Ella couldn't help but notice Professor Vindictus almost choke on his cookie. O__O Uh-oh. Please don't die Vindictus, we're not even in the air yet! The second year was relieved when she then heard him give them their next instruction. AND he was still eating cookies so he was clearly alright.
Straddling the broom, Ella grasped it tightly with both hands, her feet itching to kick off from the ground. She didn't dare move yet though, wanting to follow the professor's instructions. Instead she watching Professor Vindictus anxiously, feeling her own stomach grumble as he continued to munch on the cookie he had in his hand. The second year couldn't help but think that cookies sounded pretty awesome at the moment.

So far so good with both him and most of the students. The word most was the key word as Kurumi was already helping a fellow classmate who was having trouble. Looking around, Gideon didn't spot anyone else needing help and was about to mount his borrowed broom when he spotted Mika, the ravenclaw 1st year that he always seemed to be running into, having trouble as well. So with broom in hand, he moved closer careful not to disturb their classmates that were already moving on.
"Hey...want any help?" he asked coming up beside her, offering a polite smile. "They can be stubborn at times so ye need to be firm and commanding."
Oichi got on top of her broom like she saw the professor do and held the handle firmly with both hands and made sure he feet stayed firmly planted on the ground. He heart strted to race knowing that she would be taking to the skies very soon now.

It was the boy from Herbology class! He was nice right? He had one of those shiny P badges like Louisa did. Listening to what he said to her she just nodded.
Yes. Help would be much, much needed.
"Th-thanks for the help" she smiled over to him. Stubborn brooms. Alright so she needed to be firm with it and commanding.
Putting her hand back over the broom she let her mind clear of all over things but the image of the broom floating up into her hands. "UP" she demanded this time the broom lifted upwards and she immediately caught it.
She felt like doing a jig right there but she didn't. She just beamed, looked over to Gideon and smiled. "Thanks!" And then she did as the Professor her head of house had said.
She mounted the broom straddling it, both of her feet firmly on the ground. Both of her hands held firmly on the broom's neck. So she was wrong, these things could hear them?
That was WICKED!

Now that she finally had a broom in her hand, Penelope was too relieved to notice the cookies the professor was eating. If they had been doing anything else, she might've noticed and asked for one, but right now she was too interested in the broom and getting to fly soon. So she listened to the next instructions...
...Straddle? What did that even mean?
Glancing to either side of her as well as over to Kurumi to see what she was doing, she mimicked everyone else's movements, "straddling" the broom and gripping it with both hands now. Her feet remained on the ground...but hopefully not for long. Hopefully they'd start flying soon.

Pweew. That was some retort there Vindy. Beezus thought as she eyed him telling off pretty Sierra to act like Kurumi. Oh well...Kurumi was always a good girl plus she gave free cookies, no wonder Vindy and many liked her but to tell Sierra to act just like her? Pfft. Now that was hilarious, yet she didn't laugh. She just stared on the ground, trying to fight a grin.
Thankfully, more instructions were given and she followed immediately, lifting her right leg over the broom and sitting on it, hands gripping tightly her school broom's handle, her feet firm on the ground just like Vindictus said. Can they fly nooooooooooooow?

Like Kurumi?! Why did this have to be all about how Kurumi was doing things? See, this was why Sierra loathed the Gryffindor girl. She was just everywhere, she never shut up, and she always had to be perfect. Why couldn't she just fall flat on her face one good time?
"I think I will," she said with a grin. Then taking her rank with the others, she placed her right hand over the broom and commanded it to come up. "Up!" she ordered, and course it came up. Duh. She straddled the broom and held it with both hands, waiting for the command to kick off to the sky. Of course her feet were planted firmly on the ground, just as Vinny Boy had said.

Isidora was certainly NOT going to take off without her head of house's permission. Not just because he was her head of house, but because she wasn't as... excited to be airborne as some of her other year-mates. She tried to look it though, maybe the view would be nice? It had to be COOL from the air.
Her hands twisted on the broom as she watched him, ignoring most all the other students, and waited for lift off.
... was he going to share those cookies later?
