Default CoMC One: The Hatching

On the darkest of dark nights, down the rolling, phthalo green hills of Hogwarts, at the extreme back of the barnyard, in what used to be an old winged horse stall with no door and is now a converted fireplace..... lies one very shiny, very large egg-like object.

The object seems to be giving off an incredible amount of heat and occasionally quivers to and fro as the flames lick the sides of the cauldron it sits in. What is it, you wonder? You seem to be half-hypnotized by the shady, crackling, almost bubbling object; you hardly even notice the absence of the hay bales where you usually sit. In fact, there doesn't seem to be ANYWHERE to sit.

So you stand, shifting awkwardly from foot to foot, and waiting for more directions from Professor Williamson, who IS sitting, on a little metal stool, his back to the arriving class.

Sarah looked at the cute little creature, its eyes looking around that the big wide world.

Sarah began sing. the night sky providing an appropriate backdrop:

Like a diamond in the sky!

When the blazing sun is gone,
When he nothing shines upon,

In the dark blue sky you keep,
And often through my curtains peep,
For you never shut your eye,
Till the sun is in the sky.

Though I know not what you are,
Twinkle, twinkle,little star. /B] She sung. although the bieginnng part was with much more gusto then the end part. The stars twinkled in reply.

"You're probably the closest," he nodded toward one Ravenclaw in particular. "I would guess that this guy breathes pretty deadly fire as well. You can see that he has green scales for now, right? Those could change as it ages." The dragon was now back to suckling on the bottle and was hopefully no longer distracted by the class, though Willy could see that it WAS still eying the children in the front row.

"Let's all settle down for now though, all right? I'll let you pet the baby when he starts to fall asleep. It might help if you guys sang a little nursery rhyme...or at least hummed one...."
Belle remembered a muggle nursery rhyme from when her mother taught it to her. "Twinkle twinkle little star, how i wonder what you are, up above the world so high, like a diamond in the sky, twinkle twinkle little star, How I wonder what you are." She only knew the short version but there was a longer version. She didn't really have the name for a dragon, she was gonna let other people choose and be creative.

Ella smiled as Professor Williamson tried to calm the little baby cutiepie dragon down. The little guy did look rather sleepy so when Williamson asked for the class to settle down a bit-Ella sat back quietly...but wait! Had he just said they could pet the little dragon? PET IT? O__O Ella's excitement was kind of hard to wrangle but she did her best by just wiggling a big on the ground. It must of looked strange to her classmates but it was all she could do to prevent herself from First pumping and yelling 'AWESOME!'

As for something to soothe the baby dragon, Ella decided to hum softly. Since many of her classmates were going with Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star, Ella hummed that.

Ok... so watching the dragon being born...... cool. Hearing his little cries and stuff..... also cool. Going up and petting a dragon that could hurt you...... not so cool.

Yeah.

Lily wasn't going to be part of the group that would be petting the dragon, even if the professor would be there the whole time. And plus it was late at night and all the second year wanted to do was get to bed pronto. Otherwise she would end up sleeping past lunch the next day... as long as there weren't any classes. So Lily just sat there quietly, her notebook and coloring materials partway in her bag.

Well pin a rose on his nose. No more chocolate eggs?! The nerve! Not that Sierra was some candy fanatic, because she wasn't, but she also found it rude that he ate right in front of them yet didn't have any to share. She nodded along, though, to his answers to her question. "I see," she said, but inside she was still glad she'd stepped behind those Puffers. No way was she putting herself into a position to get attacked first.

"Well, I think when it grows older," she said, raising her hand, "it's less likely to kill us all. It has a track record of not coming into much contact with humans."

Except for Care of Magical Creatures class, it seemed.

Sierra's eyes grew wide with surprise, and she watched as the dragon started to...well, go completely crazy it looked like. "Err, Professor? I don't think it likes us very much," she said. "What are you planning on doing with it after class anyway?" Had he said that yet? In all the hatching excitement, Sierra hadn't heard.

Pet it?! They were going to pet the...BABY?!

How about no? Could they opt out if they wanted to? Watch from afar, maybe? ...and, were they still suggesting names for this creature? "How about RORO?" she suggested "Pronounced RAWR-o." The name just SCREAMED dragon to her.

Aspen didn't know about dominant and recessive traits of dragons. Were long snouts dominant? Horns? Green vs blue? Dragons hadn't ever really been the most compelling of creatures to study, but she made a mental note to hit up the library soon, before anyone else.

But from the sound of it, the Professor didn't know either. This prompted Aspen to raise her hand.

"So... you've never seen one of these before, Professor? Has any one ever tried to be a foster parent to an orphan hybrid dragon before? And a follow up, what is the success rate of such endeavors?" Was he going to get eaten/burned/maimed and Aspen should expect a new Creatures Professor next year? Hmmm.

Aspen might have sang to the dragon in private, but certainly not in front of all these students. Besides, there were other younger students that seemed happy enough to sing to a newborn dragon. West would probably sing a song he shouldn't, she mused.

As an aside, Aspen commented to Professor Scabior. "I'd name it Fruity."

Harvey was surprised to hear that he was the closest.. he hadnt expected that.. but the professor knew more than he did.. so if the professor said that he was closest then it must be true.

The professor then asked them to sing.. while he was thinking of something.. many had started singing already so he decided to just hum along to whichever song was closest to him.. as he was he heard an older ravenclaw ask some questions.. he was now interested in how the professor would answer these questions.. and got ready to note the answers to those questions down.

Calming down as the last of the pail filled up the baby dragon's tummy, the dragon started blinking sweepily and bobbing its little head. He was about to just fall over on his side, he was so sweepy.

The soft, soothing music coming from the crowd of creatures with bright eyes helped tooooooo. It was like being back in his egg, only it smelled much better and felt much cooler in the barn. And, his Daddy was here in the barn, and his Daddy would take care of him, wight?

Cuddling up next to his dad's legs, the dwagon let out a happy rumble and blinked its bright little eyes, blinking along to the Twinkle Twinkle tune. The length of time between blinks swowwwly grew until the dragon was soundly sleeping on Willy's feet.

“Fafnir?” he mouthed the name to Oakey who was behind him and rolled his eyes. “It’s going to eat you whole if you name him that.” He said jokingly. “What about DRAGOON, professor?” he suggested to the man in front of them. “I reckon it’s going to be one huge, powerful dragon one day. Although it doesn’t mean anything...it just sounds big.” He shrugged as he continued to watch the dragon. It will be really awesome to call it that when it’s all grown up.

A few moments later, the dragon fell asleep. He looked from the dragon, to their professor to Oakey then back to the professor. The man said they can pet it once it’s sleeping, and he was looking forward to it. Not that he’s going to go first or anything...

Alyssa watched as the baby dragon started to fall asleep. She remembered an old lullaby that her g-g grandmom used to sing to her when she was a little girl and so joined in with the others and quietly sang it.

"Hush little baby, don't say a word, Papa's gonna buy you a mockingbird
And if that mockingbird don't sing, Papa's gonna but you a diamond ring
And if that diamond ring don't shine, Papa's gonna buy you a bottle of wine
And if that bottle of wine gets broke, Papa's gonna buy you a billy goat
And if that billy goat runs away, Papa's gonna buy you a Chevrolet
And if that Chevrolet breaks down, Papa's gonna buy you the prettiest gown

And as Alyssa finished up the song, she whispered to the Professor. "Professor how about the name Saphira?" Then Alyssa realized that this dragon could be a male dragon and Saphira sounded girlish, so she suggested another name. "Or how about Eragon".

"That's right, green scales and a brilliant blue flame." Willy nodded at the little Claw. "And thanks for the name suggestions!" He was gonna... project those on the wall later. Yep.



Hmm. "I like that name suggestion," he nodded to G. "And yeah, we'll see how his horns turn out." Or horN.



"Good guess!" Though right now, his baby had Romaniany scales.

Jeffrey. Heh. William chuckled at that suggestion. "I think he'll have long horns too. Look, he already has little stubs growing!" Well, they probably couldn't see it from there, but they would later. "I think he'll be medium or on the small side, yep! Great guesses! I'm expecting super hot blue fire from him too!"



"He'll definitely have at least ONE horn AND the ability to produce fire." As all dragons did.



"Excellent reasoning," William nodded. Great answer there.



"Yes, it definitely could. Unfortunately, we don't know much more about the parents other than what breed they were.... but yeah, good guesses!"



"Yep, I agree! Great guess!" Williamson smiled at the Slytherin.



"Mhmm," Wily nodded in agreement.



Oh no, more pictures. Willy swallowed his anxiety but shrugged. "I uh, I think he'll have to stay in the forest while he grows...er.... but one day, he'll probably want to fly home." To Portugal. Or Sweden. Or Romania.

Sniffle. But not today, no, not today.



Gary. Gary Rush. Right. William would do his best to remember that one. "Thanks for taking pictures," he mentioned quietly. "Be sure to send me a copy." Or ten. He nodded at the boy's good guess too.



"Actually I think it will have a long snout, as per its name," he hinted with a wink. "But yep, you've got the green skin part right."



"Does this dragon have silvery-blue scales though?" William countered the Ravenclaw. "Nice guess though." He HOPED it would have pretty gold horns.



"Yeah that's my guess," he nodded toward the youngun Claw.



Williamson let out a short laugh at that guess. "Monster is such a harsh word, kid... but yeah he's a fire breathing baby all right."



"I agree entirely!" he beamed at the Gryffindor, totally unaware of how the boy thought he was craycray.



"Blaze... nice name! And good guess!"



"Twenty to forty feet, right! Excellent!"



"Romero is nice," Williamson put that one into his memory bank, smiling at her guess. Of course he had wings, yes yes.



"Yep! Probably!"



William wanted some of this guy's photos too. Did these kids all work for the yearbook or something? Or did they just happen to have cameras on them at all times?

"Yes, like most animals, you can tell a dragon's gender almost immediately upon birth so long as you are familiar with dragons." Rubeus Hagrid, for one, hadn't been familiar with dragons beyond the textbook. "And your guesses sound about right to me!" He didn't like the Chrystowhatever name, but he did nod at the suggestions anyway.



Thawhat? William blinked at Oakey. Was something wrong with the boy's tongue?



"Thanks for the guesses and suggestion, Ella!" See, he knew her name!



"I think this will be a powerful little guy too," Williamson agreed with Alyssa.



"Rrrrrico!" he repeated Issy. "Yeah, nice one, Isa-- er, Professor Magnus!"



"Excellent guess! He SHOULD have those features!"



What was with this girl, clinging to Cece's robes? He eyed the child but nodded to her guesses. WHUTEVER.




Nodding somewhat at all of the answers, William finished feeding the baby most of the pail of mixture and watched as the dragon started to get full and sleepy. About time! It was going on one a.m. here!

"There, there now, Baby, shhhhhhhshhh," Willy started to calm the baby, reaching out with his hand to stroke its little head. He cleared his throat and LOOKed at the class, hoping they would take a hint and be quiet for a little while longer, at least until the dragon fell asleep.

Then he responded to their answers more quietly. "Your guess is as good as mine. I think this fella will grow up to have characteristics of both parents, depending on recessive genes and such; unfortunately I can't tell you which parent was which breed, as both are either dead or disappeared."

He gave a shrug and filled up the baby's bottle with the remainder of the chicken blood/brandy mixture, holding it out to the poor, orphan baby dragon.



"You're probably the closest," he nodded toward one Ravenclaw in particular. "I would guess that this guy breathes pretty deadly fire as well. You can see that he has green scales for now, right? Those could change as it ages." The dragon was now back to suckling on the bottle and was hopefully no longer distracted by the class, though Willy could see that it WAS still eying the children in the front row.

"Let's all settle down for now though, all right? I'll let you pet the baby when he starts to fall asleep. It might help if you guys sang a little nursery rhyme...or at least hummed one...."

"Dragons take a good two years to mature. They don't fly until they're almost a full year old and they don't start breathing fire until they're about six months old." He shot a grin out toward the class. "So don't worry about your hair catching fire, kids, this one isn't a Norwegian Ridgeback." Ridgebacks, as everyone knew, could snort flames at only a month old.



"Gracias?" William replied vaguely to whoever had complimented his baby. "I'm so proud."

Yes, he had given birth to his dragon. IT WAS HIS. And woe be to any who argued otherwise.



"Aha, thanks for asking," William swiveled his head again to eye the girl who'd spoken up. "I actually thought you guys could throw out a few names for this little guy," because yes, he'd checked, "and we could take a vote before the end of class!"

The staff were welcome to suggest names too. Willy nodded toward Callie, Medea, Oliver, Dash, Isabelle and Cece.



Turning back to the baby, Willy noticed that his bottle was almost empty, so he refilled it again, naturally, and continued the process. The dragon only let out ONE little squeak that whole time.

He was glad it was absorbed with the bottle and not scared by all the children looking at it. "I uh, I dunno, I thought you guys could help me name it," he mused in response. "And," SIGH, "I suppose that will eventually happen, but not for a while yet."

So. Shhh. Don't ruin the moment, girl.



Oh good question!

William glanced back at the boy but shook his head. "No. Dragons interbreeding is similar to dogs interbreeding; terrier-labrador mixes can still have pups, can't they? Same with dragons."

He winked at the kid though. "Five points for thinking ahead though!"



And another good Hufflepuff question! "He'll be what experts call a 'Portuguese Long-Snout.'"


But that reminded him. "Class, knowing the parents of this little fella are a Romanian Longhorn and a Swedish Short-Snout, what sort of characteristics from each would you expect him to have when he's full-grown?"

Oh and it was time for another refill! Willy's baby was so hungry. Er, thirsty. Teehe.

Despite the fact that he'd just asked a question, Williamson momentarily became distracted by the hatching egg, much like the rest of the attendees to the dragon-hatching party. "Yes!" Williamson almost shouted, pointing at the girl and grinning hugely. "YES. This IS a hybrid dragon, and you all are MOST fortunate for being allowed to witness the birth of such a rare baby.

"As far as I know, and as far as my colleagues in Romania agree, this baby should be a crossbreed between the Swedish Short-Snout and the Romanian Longhorn." He looked at Cece for some reason, probably because she was from Sweden and because he knew this baby was going to grow up to be particularly dangerous.

He was about to say more when a piece of shell flew off the egg and landed close to the kids. Time for gloves and shields!



Slipping his longgggg gloves on up to his elbows, William flexed his fingers and nodded to the giant Slytherin near the front. "Yes. That would be excellent, Mr....Er...." New Guy. "Please do. Just be warned, I'm going to throw up a shield to protect you all from any fragments caused by the hatching, so there might be a glare on your photos." But whatever. They'd still look cool.

And with that being said, Williamson stood up and cast a large, protective shield over the assembled students and professors. He nodded toward the staff at the back, mouthing, "Help me maintain this?" and then went back down to crouching by the baby dragon.

Just a litttttttle bit further, baby, come on out and plaaaay!

Zhenya's nose wrinkled up as she heard the way Professor W was cooing to the baby dragon. Wasn't it weird? She thought her baby siblings were cute, but they were HUMAN! This is a dragon that could blow fire on everyone and nuke them. Oh, she didn't think the dragon would be cute at all.

She jumped a little as the egg started cracking more and more. It would be here soon, and Zhenya was sure she would be frightened.
But when its little head popped out, and its little wings extended, Zhenya smiled. It was.. well, it wasn't cute like Eva and Theodore, but it was sweet like a baby... dragon. Of course baby owls and kittens were cuter, but there as something special about the dragon.

Characteristics? Zhenya didn't know much about dragons at ALL, so she had no idea what the characteristics of this baby dragon would be, let alone its parents. What were those dragons? She just kept looking at the dragon and the way WWW was treating it. Was it like his child?

Calming down as the last of the pail filled up the baby dragon's tummy, the dragon started blinking sweepily and bobbing its little head. He was about to just fall over on his side, he was so sweepy.

The soft, soothing music coming from the crowd of creatures with bright eyes helped tooooooo. It was like being back in his egg, only it smelled much better and felt much cooler in the barn. And, his Daddy was here in the barn, and his Daddy would take care of him, wight?

Cuddling up next to his dad's legs, the dwagon let out a happy rumble and blinked its bright little eyes, blinking along to the Twinkle Twinkle tune. The length of time between blinks swowwwly grew until the dragon was soundly sleeping on Willy's feet.


Vickers paused long enough to scribble his notes down on the parchment. Indeed thats whats exciting about having a hybrid creature-- one would never know quite how they'll turn out until they're fully grown, and even then it could still constantly change, swapping out characteristics of either parent till the end of its days. As he took another shot of the baby dragon he caught the Professor looking at him. He didnt seem displeased, so maybe taking photos was ok.

But the newborn started to cry and Vickers had to stop. He could sense it was being bothered by the camera flashes. He realized that the class was now humming it a lullaby. Twinkle Little Stars.... its been a long time since he's ever sang it and vaguely too-- he just wasnt quite as on top on Muggle children's tales and songs it seems. He hummed anyway though, bits of notes here and there.

Oh, some people still had questions. And suggestions, apparently.

"I'm planning on raising him until he's old enough to live on his own, either in a reservation or in the wilderness," Willy answered very quietly. "And I'm glad SOMEONE also thinks my baby this little dragon won't grow up to be a cold-hearted killer.

He was also planning to have a few more lessons about the dragon, but who knew? So far, so good with this lesson, anyway.

"Roro." The man stopped stroking his dragon and blatantly BLINKED at the Slytherin girl. "Uh, never heard that one before, but all right." Whatever.

While it is unusual for a.... solitary individual to take on the responsibility of raising a dragon, it HAS been done, and as far as I know," or cared to admit, "no one was harmed in the raising of said dragon."

And Willy was only raising this baby til... til it could live on its own. Sniffle sniffle.

He heard her aside and angrily pointed his wand to the open space of barn wall where he usually kept a running list of class notes. The list of suggested names, FRUITY INCLUDED, went up there.

"It worked!" he whispered to the class, bending down to scoop up the baby dragon. He sat back down on his stool, which thankfully hadn't gone anywhere, and cradled it in his fireproof apron just like it was a real baby.

"The poll's up," Williamson continued whispering, "so feel free to go over to the board and mark up your vote with your wand. Or chalk. One per person, please." He had some chalk lying around his cauldron/box of supplies/junk scattered at the front near him somewhere.

Now then. "Class is dismissed, but if you'd like to come pet the baby dragon, please form an orderly line after you vote for its name. Homework will be posted on the noticeboard later this week."

And that was that. Successful hatching, hooha!

Minerva got up and gathered her things. This was the coolest lesson yet she thought. She pulled her bag onto her shoulder and headed to the front of the room. She whispered "Thank you for an amazing lesson professor. I would like to pet the dragon if that's ok? How do you pet a dragon, like two fingers just at it's tale or where is safe?" She didn't want to hurt it or anything, nor did she want to get burned so asking was better then just doing.

Nigel went up to place his vote for the name of the baby dragon. It would of course have to be an awesome name for a hybrid dragon. Once he decided on an awesome name we went back to pet the dragon because the Professor said we could.

He went to the orderly line and thought about it. How do you pet a dragon without hurting yoursekf. "Professor thanks for the awesome lesson, But how do you pet a dragon without hurting yourself. Do you have to pet it a secret special way that only you know?"

Class dismissed? And she didn't even get to sing to the Baby Dragon? Pffft. It was all because her mind had been travelling off somewhere, thinking of more names when Sierra suggested RORO. Of course, she got all flaily and excited upon hearing that suggestion. It sounded cool, flamy, courageous, awesome, and dragon-like!

Naaah, she made up her mind. She was gonna vote for that name and not the ones she suggested. Even if Charizard sounded pretty cool too.

Oh...seeing as the Baby Dragon is asleep, can she cuddle pet it nooow? Hurriedly, Beezus propped her things into her backpack, slid each of the straps into her shoulder and walked over to where Professor Williamson was. "Errrrr, Professor?" Her eyes immediately traveled to the wonderful creature. "Can I...touch your the baby?" Heh. She was making it sound like it was really a little child!

Class was over... That meant they could leave, right?... and go to bed... As soon as the professor allowed them to leave, Lily hopped up, voted for a name, and was headed back to the castle. Sure the dragon was cute and all, but she was more focused on getting to bed after a late night lesson like that. So that's what she did. She could always try and go visit the dragon at a later time.

Belle was shocked to hear the lesson was over 0.o. She was all excited about seeing the baby dragon she hardly kept track of time. She waited in line to pet the dragon. "Professor this dragon won't bite if i try to pet it right?" Annabelle asked nervously. "Thank you soo much for the lesson Professor. I really learned a lot from this.." she said with a smile. She also voted for her favorite name out of all the suggestions.

Nerida gathered her things and put them into her bag and put it on her shoulder. Went to go vote, now that was hard, there were so many options, and they were all so good! But finally she put it down to one and voted. She walked back over to the Professor and his DRAGON. She went into the orderly line and smiled big, yes she was going to pet the baby dragon. Yay!! She said Thanks for the lesson Professor can I pet your baby?? What Nerida really wanted to do was give it a hug, and you could tell it in the girls eyes and a bit in her voice, but she knew the Professors would never allow such a thing...

Narumi collected her things and voted for her favorite name, wasnt that hard she loved Dracul! She went back to the wee dragon and waited patiently in line and told the Professor I love your wee dragon and it was an amzing first lesson! Alyssa was surprised. Class was over? 'The Professor isn't going to teach us more about dragons? Guess he must be tired after that long journey from Romania and having to carry that egg. ' Alyssa thought to herself.

She got up from the floor and went over to peek at the sleeping baby dragon. It looked so cute. 'I wonder what Caleb would say about this? I bet if he knew, he'd find a way here to see him.' Alyssa thought of her cousin. But for now it was time to let sleeping dragon's lie, although Alyssa did have the urge to stroke it.

So she turned and walked up to Professor Williamson and asked,"Professor is it okay if I stroke the baby dragon aka little Willy before I leave?"

"By the way thank you again for another interesting class."Alyssa thanked the Professor.

Aspen admittedly had missed that part. Perhaps she'd been drawing, perhaps she'd been watching other students, or been distracted by fruit-bearing Professors. Any number of things could have prevented her from hearing that little tidbit.

....but was important, see? To reiterate. The facts were that this was unknown territory. She'd figured as much. What Aspen HADN'T figured on was the Professor getting mad at her for the clarification.

She turned her face towards Professor Scabior, or "Scabbers" apparently, and STARED at him for a moment - then quietly went to packing up her things. Aspen WANTED to pet the baby dragon, and to give Professor Williamson a little pat-pat too for the lesson-tunity and as a possible farewell.

However, Aspen knew better than to approach TWO dragons, one as likely as the other to breath fire at her. Maybe there'd be chances again later. She chanced another little side-glance at Professor Scabior, then started off back towards the castle.

Despite the fact that he'd just asked a question, Williamson momentarily became distracted by the hatching egg, much like the rest of the attendees to the dragon-hatching party. "As far as I know, and as far as my colleagues in Romania agree, this baby should be a crossbreed between the Swedish Short-Snout and the Romanian Longhorn." He looked at Cece for some reason, probably because she was from Sweden and because he knew this baby was going to grow up to be particularly dangerous.

He was about to say more when a piece of shell flew off the egg and landed close to the kids. Time for gloves and shields!



Slipping his longgggg gloves on up to his elbows, William flexed his fingers and nodded to the giant Slytherin near the front. "Yes. That would be excellent, Mr....Er...." New Guy. "Please do. Just be warned, I'm going to throw up a shield to protect you all from any fragments caused by the hatching, so there might be a glare on your photos." But whatever. They'd still look cool.

And with that being said, Williamson stood up and cast a large, protective shield over the assembled students and professors. He nodded toward the staff at the back, mouthing, "Help me maintain this?" and then went back down to crouching by the baby dragon.

Just a litttttttle bit further, baby, come on out and plaaaay!

"Dragons take a good two years to mature. They don't fly until they're almost a full year old and they don't start breathing fire until they're about six months old." He shot a grin out toward the class. "So don't worry about your hair catching fire, kids, this one isn't a Norwegian Ridgeback." Ridgebacks, as everyone knew, could snort flames at only a month old.



"Gracias?" William replied vaguely to whoever had complimented his baby. "I'm so proud."

Yes, he had given birth to his dragon. IT WAS HIS. And woe be to any who argued otherwise.



"Aha, thanks for asking," William swiveled his head again to eye the girl who'd spoken up. "I actually thought you guys could throw out a few names for this little guy," because yes, he'd checked, "and we could take a vote before the end of class!"

The staff were welcome to suggest names too. Willy nodded toward Callie, Medea, Oliver, Dash, Isabelle and Cece.



Turning back to the baby, Willy noticed that his bottle was almost empty, so he refilled it again, naturally, and continued the process. The dragon only let out ONE little squeak that whole time.

He was glad it was absorbed with the bottle and not scared by all the children looking at it. "I uh, I dunno, I thought you guys could help me name it," he mused in response. "And," SIGH, "I suppose that will eventually happen, but not for a while yet."

So. Shhh. Don't ruin the moment, girl.



Oh good question!

William glanced back at the boy but shook his head. "No. Dragons interbreeding is similar to dogs interbreeding; terrier-labrador mixes can still have pups, can't they? Same with dragons."

He winked at the kid though. "Five points for thinking ahead though!"



And another good Hufflepuff question! "He'll be what experts call a 'Portuguese Long-Snout.'"


But that reminded him. "Class, knowing the parents of this little fella are a Romanian Longhorn and a Swedish Short-Snout, what sort of characteristics from each would you expect him to have when he's full-grown?"

Oh and it was time for another refill! Willy's baby was so hungry. Er, thirsty. Teehe.

Then the Professor continued asking the class a few questions. What would this hybrid dragon inherit from its parents? But the other man also did say that this dragon was already identified as a Peruvian Long Snout. He rushed back to the his bookbag and took out his textbook, it seemed that the adult dragons of the breed would grow to have light green scales. "Professor, it could possibly have glittering golden horns like the Romanian dragon, and then emit blue flames like the Short Snout..." but it was its scale coloring that got him wondering, being a hybrid and all "Professor is it possible that this particular dragon would still change its scale colors? Its green now-- like the Longhorn, but given that its half Short Snout will its scale colors change to something blueish, or a combination-- blue-green maybe?"

And the Professor kept calling the dragon little guy or buddy. Was it safe to assume that it was male? "Sir, is the dragon a boy? Are we able to tell the difference in gender immediately after hatching?"

Oh names! Vickers pondered this for a moment, trying to rack his memory of the dragon names he's come across his readings. "Uhm...Draco." you know like Malfoy plus half a dozen nods to literature, pop culture and astronomy "Or maybe something from the Muggle stories where a green dragon was called Firnen, or would you like something more sophisticated like Chrysophylax?"

Jeffrey. Heh. William chuckled at that suggestion. "I think he'll have long horns too. Look, he already has little stubs growing!" Well, they probably couldn't see it from there, but they would later. "I think he'll be medium or on the small side, yep! Great guesses! I'm expecting super hot blue fire from him too!"



"He'll definitely have at least ONE horn AND the ability to produce fire." As all dragons did.



"Excellent reasoning," William nodded. Great answer there.



"Yes, it definitely could. Unfortunately, we don't know much more about the parents other than what breed they were.... but yeah, good guesses!"



"Yep, I agree! Great guess!" Williamson smiled at the Slytherin.



"Mhmm," Wily nodded in agreement.



Oh no, more pictures. Willy swallowed his anxiety but shrugged. "I uh, I think he'll have to stay in the forest while he grows...er.... but one day, he'll probably want to fly home." To Portugal. Or Sweden. Or Romania.

Sniffle. But not today, no, not today.



Gary. Gary Rush. Right. William would do his best to remember that one. "Thanks for taking pictures," he mentioned quietly. "Be sure to send me a copy." Or ten. He nodded at the boy's good guess too.



"Actually I think it will have a long snout, as per its name," he hinted with a wink. "But yep, you've got the green skin part right."



"Does this dragon have silvery-blue scales though?" William countered the Ravenclaw. "Nice guess though." He HOPED it would have pretty gold horns.



"Yeah that's my guess," he nodded toward the youngun Claw.



Williamson let out a short laugh at that guess. "Monster is such a harsh word, kid... but yeah he's a fire breathing baby all right."



"I agree entirely!" he beamed at the Gryffindor, totally unaware of how the boy thought he was craycray.



"Blaze... nice name! And good guess!"



"Twenty to forty feet, right! Excellent!"



"Romero is nice," Williamson put that one into his memory bank, smiling at her guess. Of course he had wings, yes yes.



"Yep! Probably!"



William wanted some of this guy's photos too. Did these kids all work for the yearbook or something? Or did they just happen to have cameras on them at all times?

"Yes, like most animals, you can tell a dragon's gender almost immediately upon birth so long as you are familiar with dragons." Rubeus Hagrid, for one, hadn't been familiar with dragons beyond the textbook. "And your guesses sound about right to me!" He didn't like the Chrystowhatever name, but he did nod at the suggestions anyway.



Thawhat? William blinked at Oakey. Was something wrong with the boy's tongue?



"Thanks for the guesses and suggestion, Ella!" See, he knew her name!



"I think this will be a powerful little guy too," Williamson agreed with Alyssa.



"Rrrrrico!" he repeated Issy. "Yeah, nice one, Isa-- er, Professor Magnus!"



"Excellent guess! He SHOULD have those features!"



What was with this girl, clinging to Cece's robes? He eyed the child but nodded to her guesses. WHUTEVER.




Nodding somewhat at all of the answers, William finished feeding the baby most of the pail of mixture and watched as the dragon started to get full and sleepy. About time! It was going on one a.m. here!

"There, there now, Baby, shhhhhhhshhh," Willy started to calm the baby, reaching out with his hand to stroke its little head. He cleared his throat and LOOKed at the class, hoping they would take a hint and be quiet for a little while longer, at least until the dragon fell asleep.

Then he responded to their answers more quietly. "Your guess is as good as mine. I think this fella will grow up to have characteristics of both parents, depending on recessive genes and such; unfortunately I can't tell you which parent was which breed, as both are either dead or disappeared."

He gave a shrug and filled up the baby's bottle with the remainder of the chicken blood/brandy mixture, holding it out to the poor, orphan baby dragon.



"You're probably the closest," he nodded toward one Ravenclaw in particular. "I would guess that this guy breathes pretty deadly fire as well. You can see that he has green scales for now, right? Those could change as it ages." The dragon was now back to suckling on the bottle and was hopefully no longer distracted by the class, though Willy could see that it WAS still eying the children in the front row.

"Let's all settle down for now though, all right? I'll let you pet the baby when he starts to fall asleep. It might help if you guys sang a little nursery rhyme...or at least hummed one...."

Calming down as the last of the pail filled up the baby dragon's tummy, the dragon started blinking sweepily and bobbing its little head. He was about to just fall over on his side, he was so sweepy.

The soft, soothing music coming from the crowd of creatures with bright eyes helped tooooooo. It was like being back in his egg, only it smelled much better and felt much cooler in the barn. And, his Daddy was here in the barn, and his Daddy would take care of him, wight?

Cuddling up next to his dad's legs, the dwagon let out a happy rumble and blinked its bright little eyes, blinking along to the Twinkle Twinkle tune. The length of time between blinks swowwwly grew until the dragon was soundly sleeping on Willy's feet.

Vickers paused long enough to scribble his notes down on the parchment. Indeed thats whats exciting about having a hybrid creature-- one would never know quite how they'll turn out until they're fully grown, and even then it could still constantly change, swapping out characteristics of either parent till the end of its days. As he took another shot of the baby dragon he caught the Professor looking at him. He didnt seem displeased, so maybe taking photos was ok.

But the newborn started to cry and Vickers had to stop. He could sense it was being bothered by the camera flashes. He realized that the class was now humming it a lullaby. Twinkle Little Stars.... its been a long time since he's ever sang it and vaguely too-- he just wasnt quite as on top on Muggle children's tales and songs it seems. He hummed anyway though, bits of notes here and there.

Smiling at those who were singing, Willy joined in with a matching little hum of his own. Hum hum hum hum, little star....

"You're all doing a fine job," he nodded at the singing leaders. "Keep it up." Baby was ALMOST asleep...



Oh, some people still had questions. And suggestions, apparently.

"I'm planning on raising him until he's old enough to live on his own, either in a reservation or in the wilderness," Willy answered very quietly. "And I'm glad SOMEONE also thinks my baby this little dragon won't grow up to be a cold-hearted killer.

He was also planning to have a few more lessons about the dragon, but who knew? So far, so good with this lesson, anyway.

"Roro." The man stopped stroking his dragon and blatantly BLINKED at the Slytherin girl. "Uh, never heard that one before, but all right." Whatever.





"Added and added," Williamson nodded to the next two suggestions.



More questions, coming from a Know It All Claw. No surprises there.

"I have never personally handled this particular breed of dragon, Aspen, no. They're extremely rare. But I suppose you were too busy talking to Scabbers there to hear my saying so earlier?" He gave the girl and the professor she was all buddy-buddy with a cold look.

Has anyone ever tried to be a foster parent to an.... OH FOR THE LOVE OF MERLIN. William stood up to his full height and crossed his arms at the child. "For your information, YES. Yes they have. While it is unusual for a.... solitary individual to take on the responsibility of raising a dragon, it HAS been done, and as far as I know," or cared to admit, "no one was harmed in the raising of said dragon."

And Willy was only raising this baby til... til it could live on its own. Sniffle sniffle.

He heard her aside and angrily pointed his wand to the open space of barn wall where he usually kept a running list of class notes. The list of suggested names, FRUITY INCLUDED, went up there.



Looking back down at his feet, William noticed that the baby dragon had, quite literally, fallen asleep on him. D'awwwwww. If that wasn't just the cutest thing.....! He could FEEL his anger at Aspen 'Asks-Too-Many-Questions' Odessa just melting away at the sight of his baby.

"It worked!" he whispered to the class, bending down to scoop up the baby dragon. He sat back down on his stool, which thankfully hadn't gone anywhere, and cradled it in his fireproof apron just like it was a real baby.

"The poll's up," Williamson continued whispering, "so feel free to go over to the board and mark up your vote with your wand. Or chalk. One per person, please." He had some chalk lying around his cauldron/box of supplies/junk scattered at the front near him somewhere.

Now then. "Class is dismissed, but if you'd like to come pet the baby dragon, please form an orderly line after you vote for its name. Homework will be posted on the noticeboard later this week."

And that was that. Successful hatching, hooha!

Dylan COULD NOT believe anything he was seeing...

Not one bit of it.

So, the dragon...YES, it had been confirmed to be a DRAGON, was making that egg bounce around...and at any moment, was going to bust out and possibly scorch them all with his FLAMES OF RAGE. Dylan knew that if he'd been cramped up in a tiny shell for however long, he'd have been quite upset himself. So, there was no blaming the baby for that.

And then there were cracks...and more cracks, someone was screaming...Bloody he-...Who WAS that screaming?

Looking around a bit, Dylan spotted Bee as the source...and ROLLED his eyes. Seriously? What was it with girls, anyway?

Then the shell was busting open and the Slytherin had to admit, he was a little worried. Perhaps the Dragon, being so young, wouldn't know better and would go on a rampage, roasting them all. IT COULD HAPPEN! Even if they were all wearing fire-proof stuffs...Their faces were still exposed! And Dylan cared far more about his face than he did other parts of his body, if he were being honest.

He was a little thing...A tad bigger than the Slytherin thought he'd be...but yea. Eying the little baby with fascination curiosity, Dylan moved closer. Like he'd said earlier, he'd never had the privilege of seeing one in person. So, this was new for him. New...and a little exciting. But just a little...

Names? They were throwing out options. Apparently, WWW hadn't premeditated one. Some of the suggestions were good...Like blaze...and that slightly longer one that Vicky had thrown out...but some were just stupid. Like fruity?! Yes, it was OBVIOUSLY a girl suggestion...

Honestly...naming a dragon something like that...

Wha...What? Class was over already?

Blinking a few times, Dylan started stuffing things back in his bag. The class had been...exciting and eventful. He'd say that much about it.

Hearing the offer to pet the Dragon before leaving, he moved a bit closer, eying the little creature. When close to the Professor, the baby didn't seem at all agitated or frustrated. Just like human babies...Just not as whiny or irritating.

Reaching out a hand, he petted the things scaly surface rather quickly before proceeding to back away. He didn't want that thing, no matter how cute he was, to burn his face...or anything else.

"Erm. Good lesson, Professor." He offered, before quickly turning to make his way back towards the castle.

Walking towards the front of the desk Prue smiled at the teacher. "That was a great lesson professor! The best I've ever had" she said grinning as she slowly moved towards the little dragon. "It's so adorable" she had to restrain herself from trying to cuddle it as she stroked it, looking at the little baby dragon lovingly. Now all she had to know was were she could get one when she was older!

Everyone seems to want to tackle take care of the dragon. Well it was the cutest thing ever. But Jonathan just stood there with a dorky smile on his face, maybe next time if he gets to see it around, he'll just have an one on one session with the baby. He still thinks Draco would be an awesome name to it. Whatever they decide on, Jonathan will still call it Draco and that's official.

Well, the lecture is done isn't it? Jonathan took a few steps over to the Professor "Best lecture, Professor" still eyeing the dragon and the bunch of students lining up for it.
