As you enter the astronomy classroom you'll notice that the room has been re arranged to make room in front of the windows for telescope gazing. The class is held at midnight. The desks are grouped two and two just like in the previous years. On each desk there is a piece of parchment.
Up at the front of the classroom Professor Roslund is sitting in his chair, and is lazily flipping through/ reading the latest issue of the daily prophet. Behind him on the blackboard a message is written.
Quote:
Please write your name, year and house on the parchment. Each parchment is charmed to turn into a name plate when you are finished.

Marie wasn't going to even bother with answering this question. Really, what was the point when everyone was blurting out basically the same answer? Not wanting to loose points for not participating though she raised her hand and tried to answer just a tiny bit differently than everyone else had, if that was even possible with this question. "Sir, the solar system consists of the sun, which is circled by eight planets which are: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune. That is the order in which they orbit, or circle around the sun. There use to be a ninth planet called Pluto but a long time ago someone decided it was too small to be considered a planet... or something like that."
Putting her hand down she sat there listening to what everyone else had to say. She knew there were other things out there like moons, many dwarf planets (or plutoids), an asteroid belt, comets, meteors, and other... stuff. She just didn't bother with mentioning any of that as it was only the planets that were asked about.

"The planets are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, and sometimes Pluto, though it's really more of a dwarfy thingie." Even Tori had learned the planets under her tutor's tutelage. "You can remember the planets with the mnemonic device, 'My Very Excellent Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas.' Though of course you would take off the P for Pizzas if you aren't counting Pluto."
She beamed up at the professor. He'd liked her 'space junk' answer; maybe he'd like this one too?

Victoria smiled. She know all of the planets already. Name them all is like a piece of cake! "Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune." answered Victoria. "They used to think Pluto is a planet but then discovered that it is actually a dwarf planet." added Victoria after a few seconds of thoughtful thinking.
Edvard couldn’t help but smile as little Indiana was the first one who shot up her hand to answer. Listening he nodded “Astronomy is indeed about stuff in outer space like planets and stars.” The stuff was is you were picky planets, stars, meteors and so on.
The next person in line to answer was a Gryffindor boy. “Yes in astronomy we study celestial bodies in the universe like planets, nebulas and galaxies to name a few things.” It was a part of the definition of astronomy so the lion boy would get credit for his answer.
Eddie turned his attention to a student whom he initially had taken for a girl. Now that snake house member spoke up it was clear that it was boy and nothing else. Good way to stuff up, Professor he chided himself before responding to the answer. “You are right! In Astronomy we study stars and planets but there are much more to the field you might think. It’s not just about stars and planets it’s so much more than that.” Eddie wanted to elaborate there and then but stopped himself.
The next student to put her answer into the cauldron was a claw girl who was the first one to mention comets. “Good, you seem to have gotten the gist of it and it’s nice that you mention comets. Comets are usually mixed up with meteors.”
Here was one who was really trying to think and not just read the textbook definition.“ You are on the right track dear! The history of something always plays a big part in how we view something today or how much we know about it like for example the moon.” Edvard said encouragingly. He wasn’t going to go deeper about the moon since that was a topic for a totally different lesson.
Science? Edvard blinked for a second and then smiled at the snake girl “Yes your right in astronomy we do study stars, planets and galaxies but I wouldn’t call it a science since that is a muggle term which I feel is just a big fancy word.”
It was nice to see that so many made the effort to be active despite the late hour. “Very good answer dear!” Someone must have been studying before class to be extra prepared. Edvard liked that trait in his students even if it was so far only snakes that showed it.
Turning in the direction of the boy that spoke next Edvard gave a small nod of approval as the boy gave a short answer but fully good answer to his question. The boy seemed to be yearning for something more advanced.
Another student that had done some studying before class, “Good answer!” Edvard said as he directed the word to the next student.
“Constellations?” Edvard supplied the young boy helpfully. It had sounded like the word the little snake had been searching for but not finding. “Very good and yes astronomy is exactly the study of stars, planets, galaxies and more.”
The next claw in line to answer also mentioned science as he explained what astronomy studied. It was becoming clearer and clearer that the students were very influenced by the muggle world. “Good answer!” Edvard replied.
Another claw followed that gave a short answer without much detail but in most he was correct. “Yes astronomy is the study of things beyond Earth but I’d like us to be precise about what things are.” Eddie said.
A badger girl brought up a question which needed an answer “Satellites are made by men and they are a tool we use to study the earth and other things in space. Satellites help us explore so yes you are right. Satellites don’t count.” He made a mental note of the rest of the badgers answer to award points later.
“I see. You are on the right track dear.” Astronomy was though a pretty broad subject even if you could hardly see it by the definition of what the subject was set to study.
Zodiac studies and divination! Holding up his hand to quiet the students Edvard said “If you want to learn about divination and how you divine meaning out of space you will have to talk to the resident divination professor, Thereos. Also zodiac studies lands under Astrology and that is not my field to teach, but otherwise a good definition.”
“Black holes and strings are interesting occurrences but topics for other lessons, good definition though dear.” Edvard said before scribbling a not on a piece of parchment.
When the next claw boy started talking Edvard wondered how he would answer. He was surprised. The boy gave a very plausible definition. “Very good,” Professor Roslund mused the answers seemed to be getting better and more detailed with more time to think.
Edvard saw the enthusiasm and eagerness in the boy’s eyes as he gave his answer. He had really thought it through. “Good, good, we are going to talk more about history and how the movement of celestial bodies affects our daily lives, but that will be in another lesson.” He was so happy that the students were making efforts to make the lesson good.
???
Professor Roslund at first didn’t understand the badgers answer but when he did he smiled at her “Good job. We will talk a little about Earth in our lesson today.”
“That is true. Good job.” Had the snake been studying or had she remembered something which his predecessor had taught them in a previous lesson? No matter it was good that the greek background was explained.
When the snake girl trailed off Edvard feared that she had lost track of what she had wanted to say but she hadn’t. Instead she provided him with a decent definition. “Nice definition.”
The next one to speak was the lion prefect and she gave a very detailed explanation “Excellent answer, prefect Hollingberry!”
Laughing warmly as the next Slytherin gave her contribution Edvard said “We will definitely be learning all about space junk. Good definition by the way.” Space junk, he was definitely going to use that word in the future.

William raised his hand. " The planets are Neptune, Saturn, Mercury, Venus, Earth, Uranus. Jupiter And Mars" Wiliam told the professor." Also Pluto was a planet, but the sceintists downgraded it to a dwarf planet" William said to the professor.

Cael smirked when he heard the next question, sure that they were about to be inundated with laments about Pluto from their fellow classmates.
"The planets currently include Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and used to include Pluto. However, astronomers now classify it and others as dwarf planets and thus, not part of the big eight. You can use the mnemonic My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Noodles, to remember the order."
Sneaking a peek at his lesson plan Edvard continued after a moment. "Most of you have talked about planets. Can anyone name the planets in the solar system?"
"Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune," Violet rattled off, in what suddenly sounded to her like a rather swotty voice--was she really that obnoxious? She would have to watch that. "And Pluto, too, only it got demoted and isn't a planet anymore," she continued, remembering how worked up her Muggle uncle had been over that, "but I think it should be." She had always rather liked the lonely planet with its erratic orbit, way out there at the edge of the galaxy. Now it wasn't considered good enough to be a real planet--just like her pure-blood relatives didn't think she was good enough to be a real witch.

Minerva raised her hand "Professor there is Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mar, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. In school we learned that Pluto was a planet until 2006 when it was considered a Dwarf Planet." Minerva realized what she was saying and looked around. "Well I was meaning in muggle school of course." She forgets sometimes that not everyone had went to muggle school.

Jayden knew this one, she raised her hand and answered confidently "Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune... and Pluto which was a planet for a time... but then was changed to being a dwarf." She mused sadly.

Alyssa was glad that her answer hadn't been a wrong one. Now on to the next question. She listened to those who had answered before her. Since there were the same planets in the solar system, her answer would be the same. But she was sure that even though he would be hearing the same answers over and over again, he would still appreciate student participation.
So she raised her hand and answered."The planets in the solar system are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Pluto used to be considered a planet when it was discovered back in 1930 but some Muggle Planetary organization back in 2006, recategorized poor Pluto as a dwarf planet because it was discovered that it was actually one of many bodies within the then newly identified Kuiper belt. Why they didn't discover that earlier, who knows. But when they removed Pluto, there was a huge outcry especially from the teaching Academy in the Muggle community because now they had to change all their teaching material!"

Piece of cake. Who didn't know the planets? Except some didn't seem to know they'd demoted Pluto. Sky shook her head slightly. Poor Pluto. Sky recited, "Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune."
Sneaking a peek at his lesson plan Edvard continued after a moment. "Most of you have talked about planets. Can anyone name the planets in the solar system?"
Mmmhmmm. Planets. He knew those, pretty much everyone knew them, right? The Hufflepuff Prefect still raised his hand and spoke up their names, "There are eight planets in our Solar System...Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Pluto stepped into the 'dwarf planet' category with Ceres, Haumea, Makemake and Eris." Simply true. Yet he believed Pluto ought to be a planet still. Never mind the fact that its characteristics and size made it belong somewhere else.

A school subject!
Blink! Turning towards the Ravenclaw Quidditch Captain Professor Roslund said "Yes it is a school subject." he was totally thrown off guard by the claws answer.
Shaking his head Professor Roslund said "As the majority has said Astronomy is the study of celestial objects such as planets, stars, star clusters, nebulas and galaxys and phenomena that has its origins outside Earth’s atmosphere."
"Astronomy is one of the oldest sciences and people have been studying the night sky for several thousands of years it began with the Babylonians, Greeks and Mayans or really any of the early civilizations.”
Sneaking a peek at his lesson plan Edvard continued after a moment. "Most of you have talked about planets. Can anyone name the planets in the solar system?"

Nate raised his hand again. "Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. They ousted Pluto back in 2006."

"There was 9 planets, Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, but astronomers decided that Pluto was a lot smaller than the other 8 planets, so demoted it, so to speak, to a dwarf planet, therefore changing the 'Big 9' to the 'Big 8'." said Willow, slightly satisfied with her answer. Rory's hand shot straight into the air. This was the easiest question and there's no way to get this one wrong. "Technically, there are eight planets known as Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars..." Rory paused. Which one came first, Jupiter or Saturn? Oh, never mind. "Uh, Saturn, Jupiter, Uranus, and Neptune." he continued, counting each planet on his fingers to ensure he had gotten them, which he had. "However, years ago, there used to be nine planets. The ninth having the name of...Bluto? Suto? Something like that." Whatever. That planet seemed like a total drag in Rory's mind.

Tiffany thought for a while. She had learned it before when she was studying at her muggle school. She put up her hand and answered,"The Solar System is about the Sun and its planetary system and it can be divided as the Inner part and the outer part."she smiled and continued."But actually there are eight planets in the solar system and they are Mercury, Mars, Venus, Earth which is in the inner part of the solar system, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune which is in the outer part of the solar system."She sat down and was quite satisfied with her answer.

Kennedy's forehead creased in thought. Hmm, all the planets...well, there was that big one, then that one with rings, and the one with many moons, then the one that was close to the sun and this one, the one with life in it; Earth. He raised his hand, feeling confident about his answer, "Well, in this Solar System there is: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune." Yeah, and he didn't mention Pluto since that had been revoked years ago.

Hmm. Name the planets?
... That easy, huh? Sierra smirked to herself then raised her hand. "Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune," she recalled. It was something she'd known by memory since her homeschooling days. She mentally rolled her eyes and all the people mentioning Pluto. Had the professor asked for dwarf plants? Noooo. He'd asked for planets.
She hated Dictionary Eaters, and that's what she called the likes of Kurumi Hollingberry.

Planets?Something as easy as listing the planets. The professor had to be kidding them right? That seemed a little but too basic. His hand shot up in the air like a bullet.Adam knew everyone had answered the same common ones but he added,"Well, didn't they take off Pluto from the list of planets?Wasn't it smaller than it's own moon,so the big guys didn't consider it one."Ever since he had heard about it,the declassification of the planet, although it didn't bother him it just confused Adam as to why they needed to do that. "Anyways there's Mars,Venus,Mercury,Uranus,Earth,Jupiter,Saturn an Neptune..In my book."

She listened as a boy next to her had answered the question directed to the class. She couldn't help but giggle when he was speaking about the supposedly ninth planet.
"It's Pluto. Not Bluto or Suto." she told him when he sat down.

Luna's hand went straight up in the air ''We have eight planets in our solar syestem... Earth, Jupiter, Mars, Mercury, Neptune, Saturn, Uranus and Venus,''
''Unless you count Pluto which know was named a star not a planet,'' she finished

Jez raised her hand again. "The planets in our solar system are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Pluto is now classed as a dwarf planet." No, Jez didn't feel sorry for Pluto. It was a planet, a far-off ball of rock that didn't support life. No biggie. "Most of the planets are named after Roman gods, such as Venus, goddess of love, or Mars, god of warfare." Just some background info there.
Kurumi's hand shot up in the air. "There are eight planets in our solar system," she said with a slight giggle in her tone. How did she remember them all? Well, it had a little something to do with a television show she watched growing up along with her brother constantly rattling off facts. Well, mostly it had to do with the television show. "There four inner planets, Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars, along with four outer planets, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Until 2006, Pluto had been considered a planet, but that title was revoked when a formal definition of a planet was established."

"Eh..Mars?" three fingers and now he was hungry for that muggle candy... "jupiter" fourth finger came up. "Saturday..no eh..Satorno...i think." he thought for a moment while biting his lower lip and raised his hand with the four fingers in the air again. "Uranus and Neptune!~"

At least the good part was that professor Roslund didn't get mad or anything, since most of the professors seemed to like to take points around there.
Anyway. Back to his question. "There's Pluto," her favourite, "even though it is not exactly considered a planet," more like a tiny planet, but it was still her favourite. "Neptune," Nora went on, still with her hand in the air, but she eventually let it fall back down, "Uranus, Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Earth, Venus and Mercury."
And yes, she knew she started with the last one, but she did that on purpose, since it was her favourite. Hehe.

He looked down this time. What else? Was he still missing more or has he said it all? "Mer" yeah, there is a 'mer' something too. She had always rather liked the lonely planet with its erratic orbit, way out there at the edge of the galaxy. Now it wasn't considered good enough to be a real planet--just like her pure-blood relatives didn't think she was good enough to be a real witch.

Never mind the fact that its characteristics and size made it belong somewhere else.

If only she remembered what year poor Pluto got demoted! She didn't think it was very fair, imagine how bad Pluto felt, if it did have feelings. She wouldn't like it if someone did that to her, because of her 153cm...

Yeah, and he didn't mention Pluto since that had been revoked years ago.

...That easy, huh? Sierra smirked to herself then raised her hand. "Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune," she recalled. It was something she'd known by memory since her homeschooling days. She mentally rolled her eyes and all the people mentioning Pluto. Had
the professor asked for dwarf plants? Noooo. He'd asked for planets.
She hated Dictionary Eaters, and that's what she called the likes of Kurumi Hollingberry.

No, Jez didn't feel sorry for Pluto. It was a planet, a far-off ball of rock that didn't support life. No biggie. "Most of the planets are named after Roman gods, such as Venus, goddess of love, or Mars, god of warfare." Just some background info there.
Edvard beamed from ear to ear as student after student recited the planets in almost the exact order. "Good job everyone! I’m very pleased to see that you have remembered the planets of our solar system." Would they be thourough when they handed in the homework assignment later? He paused for a moment and then continued "The Sun as some of you mentioned is not a planet it’s a star. Otherwise the eight planets of the solar system are Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Mars, Uranus, Neptune, Earth and Saturn."

Name the planets. Again an easy question, he wasn't sleepy anymore and all his attention turned to the class because Astronomy was now...his favorite class. Hehe. But everyone already named the planets and repeating it again was boring. Instead he said "Besides the planets that have been mentioned, there are also dwarf planets like Pluto" but for Nikolas, Pluto was still part of the Solar System not matter what they said.

So did that mean it was a planet, but a tiny planet, or half a planet? He wasn't entirely sure if it was solely its size that classified it as a Dwarf planet, but it could also be other criteria. Hopefully the professor didn't mind the question, he hadn't even planned on asking it just kind of came out.

Among the first to answer was Ms Force from Slytherin and Ms Stone of Ravenclaw. "Yes Venus is a planet and so is Earth dears." He responded before waiting to for them to recite more planets but they never came, oddly enough. Had he worded the question wrongly?
Scratching his head absent mindedly Edvard was glad when Mr Agger, Mr Uronen, Ms Potter and Ms DeCour broke his trail of thoughts. "You are all correct. Pluto is now classified as a dwarf planet after they changed the requirements for being considered a planet back in 2006. It almost lead to a riot in the academic world since the change in classification meant that the teachers had to change the curriculum."
"Another important fact to remember which Miss Slazar brought up is that all the planets orbit around the sun which is the heart of the solar system." Allowing the student’s time to take down notes Edvard went over and opened the cup boards to look at the state of the telescopes. They seemed to be in working order.
A quick glance out the window showed him that it was high time to move on. Clapping his hands together to get the student’s attention he said "Right, can everyone take out their telescopes? It’s a perfect night to look at mercury so set up your telescopes in front of the windows and see if you can pin point mercury."
OCC: The next task is to RP taking out your characters telescope, and trying to find mercury in the sky. If your student didn’t bring a telescope then feel free to RP claiming one from the cupboard. Feel free to be as successful or not as you want with finding the planet. I don’t mind if you partner up either. Have fun with it! I will teach a spell to focus the telescope lens in my next post.

Eeeep they were going to look for Mercury?
Grinning like a silly child, Nora took her telescope out of her bag, and walked over to an empty window to set it up over there. It didn't even take her a long time, so she was more and more anxious about the idea.

Leaning down, Thea extracted her telescope from her things. It was late, so she had just thrown it in. Plonking it on the table, tounge sticking out, the second year tried to assemble the silly thing. 'Grr..' Eventually she had it standing up.
Smiling slighlty at Daichi incase she had scared him with her growling, she pressed her eye to her telescope. After five minutes she had found nothing. Nada. ZERO. Apart from stars.. and again they were annoying. Sitting up there.. twinkling. Rubbing a hand across her face, Thea sighed. Wow. This was making her grumpy. Turning to Daichi, she smiled again. 'Can you find anything?! Apart from flipping stars..' She added, grumbling.

Raven took her telescope from her bag. Then she tried to find Mercury.
"Professor." said her. "Which one is Mercury? I just saw stars and moon there."
