Divination 3

Last class of the term, and upon entry into the Divination classroom, all you see are the shelves. Which previously had held all number of supplies for the lesson of the day, but now look more like Professor Bishop transported a small portion of the library into her classroom. The shelves are lined with books, although it's impossible to read the spines of any of them. They look like they've been charmed so as to be nondescript, although still vaguely intriguing. If one finds the mystery intriguing.

Renée is sitting in her usual location at her table in the front of the room, facing the two-person tables that are back in the place of the little circular tables that had been there for the students in the previous classes, and flipping through an unbound manuscript idly as she waits for students to arrive. There is definitely something different about the feeling of the classroom this time around, but it's hard to place.

Steelsheen 07-18-2011 09:11 AM

Salander strolls into Divinations then stops short by the door. He doubles back looking at the corridor then back at the classroom. He seems to be doing this often it was weirding him out. Last time he thought he found himself in a flower shop, this time round he was wondering how he ended up in the library, specially he promised himself he would never go back there if he could help it.

He spots the Divinations Professor waiting at the front of the class "Hello Ms Bishop!" he greeted her a little too cheerfully, then sits himself by his usual corner at the front of the class, nothing to obstruct his view.

Quick Quotes Quill 07-18-2011 09:54 AM

'Good day, Professor', Gwen greeted as she walked in the classroom. She then took a seat and looked around. Eh... why does this place look like the library? I wonder what these are about..., the girl thought and tried reading the name of one of the books. Why can't I read it? Odd... Only one more thing- how in the world could books help us in Divination? Are these here for the lesson or is there no more room in the library? Hmm..?

Presley Black 07-18-2011 01:24 PM

Presley skipped into divination, and immediately noticed the books. The shelves were filled with them, just like the library. She grinned. Were they supposed to predict what was inside the books? "Hello Professor!" She greeted, and skipped to a seat near Gwen. "Mind if I sit here" she asked.

Savannah senses difference immediately when she walked in to the classroom. But what it was she could not tell. Divination is okay, it's pretty interesting but she always have trouble interpreting the shapes. First it looked like a dragon then it looked like a baby. Savannah can never get a correct reading.

"Good morning professor."
Savannah greeted the professor. She has watched her manners more carefully now.

Janice skipped into the classroom, but something stopped her. The class was different.
"Hello, Professor!"
And took a seat.

Trish 07-18-2011 04:24 PM

Penny walked into the Divination class, it looked slightly odd today, trying to figure out what is different..

"Good Morning Professor Bishop", looking at the professor... then walking down to take a seat at one of the two-person tables and taking out her supplies for class..

What about the books?, Gwen wanted to ask. Honestly now, what will we be doing with them today. Predicting our future when looking at the covers? That seems a bit... silly? While thiking about this, the young Ravenclaw heard a voice near her. She immediatley recognized it. 'Of course not', the girl said grinning. Why would I mind?

Selina walked into Divination and looked around the room. She had a real sense of comfort in this classroom now since her experience in the Common Room. Out of habit she placed her hand on her left shoulder where the newest addition of the blue DS was ingrained on her skin. Once she made her way toward the desk of Professor Bishop she beamed at the Professor and said, "Good morning Professor." It was the most sincere Selina had ever been about a good morning in Divination. Because it was actually a good morning. Her mind was no longer so cloudy about all of her issues. Bishop knew that and the unspoken thank you that Selina sent to her Professor she hoped the woman could receive.

elllla_Wtwins 07-18-2011 05:40 PM

Marching into the classroom, Thea's fierce stubbron kitty Maleficent followed her. Raising her hand and smiling at the Professor, Thea went to take a seat.
'I'm sorry Professor, Maleficent won't leave me alone..' She ran her fingers through her hair. Maleficent was irritating at sensing things.. hopefully Professor Bishop would tell her she had to get rid of the cat. Sense that Maleficent..

nogoodforyou 07-18-2011 05:54 PM

Divination!

Even though Helena knew that she was a natural disaster at this subject, since the... reading-the-future thing couldn't quite be learned from a book, she started liking this class. You know. No deadly plants that wanted to eat students, no professor that made them turn cats into hats, no smelly potions... it was relaxing and nice. Hehe.

She also missed the flowers as she entered the classroom, since a lot of books seemed to have taken their places. "Hello, professor," Helena gave her a smile, and then walked to her usual seat, somewhere in the front.

omnomnomRAWR 07-18-2011 08:09 PM

Maria stepped into the classroom and nodded politely at Professor Bishop. She sighed and sat down in a random seat.

Destiny 07-18-2011 08:57 PM

teehee, polyjuiced as Evelyn.

Destiny, polyjuiced as Evelyn, made her way up the steps to the Divination classroom. She thought, since she wasn't in her own body, the trek up them would have been a lot easier. Merlin, was she wrong! It actually seemed worse and a few times she swore her legs weren't cooperating with her.

Either that, or she was just really, really hungry. She didn't know.

But, once she stepped in the classroom, none of that mattered. She'd soon be in a seat and she didn't think Professor Bishop had any food laying around. Oh well. Glancing around the room, since it seemed everything looked different through Evelyn's eyes, Destiny!Evelyn took notice of the books on the shelves. And it was time to BE Evelyn.

"I LIKE books! I LIKE to read! I'm Evelyn Flores!"

With that, she plopped herself down in the closest seat and began unpacking her things from her bag.

Roselyn 07-18-2011 09:05 PM

Polyjuiced as Destiny, meep!

Evelyn was self conscious the whooooole trek up to the seventh floor and to the divination classroom. Mostly because she kept trying to pull down her SHORT hair, as if that would make it any longer. Not to mention she was keeping a close eye on Destiny to make sure she didn't do anything to make her look stupid.

...Well, at least ninety percent of the walk up to the divination class was alright.

Heaving a relieved sigh as they made it to the classroom, Evelyn (who was polyjuiced as Destiny) adjusted her bag as usually, getting ready to drop it on the ground at whatever table they chose, when she heard her. It. Destiny. HER! She...

Stare.

Mouth agate in shock, Evelyn!Destiny didn't even notice the books or the weird change in the classroom. She just stared at Destiny. Or....herself. She stared at her. That is, before she covered her face in embarrassment and hastily made her way over to a table in the BACK, dragging Destiny...herself...with her. Yea, Destiny sat down already, but she was moving again! For the love of Merlin, could she make it anymore worse?! "Just...don't talk." Ever. Please.

Penny had busy looking around the room, still trying to figure out what was different..only when she heard a boy talking to her, did she look up..

"No I don't mind at all", shifting her belongings to her own side of the table..."I'm Penny Laughgood, pleased to meet you", said Penny with a smile.

Thinking that it was kinda strange that she'd been in this beautiful school almost a year and she was still meeting new people all the time.

SilverTiger 07-18-2011 11:14 PM

lesson will definitely start later tonight, as I'd like to let a few others filter in

As she heard the first person enter, Renée looked up from her manuscript and grinned a little at Salander's doubling back as if he needed to check the classroom. She'd had a feeling the decor change was going to get a few of the students' attention, but in the same respect it had a reason. Even though she was perfectly comfortable in the library, she felt like Kimber wouldn't have wanted her to have her class invade it, so it was easier to just bring books to the classroom.

Either way, it seemed the Slytherin had decided it was in fact the Divination classroom, and she'd smiled again as he'd approached the seat at the front where he'd been until the last lesson. "Good morning. Back to the front, Salander?," she asked lightly. He certainly seemed more animated now as opposed to earlier instances, which was interesting. Perhaps it was the end of term being so close.

Renée wasn't entirely able to put much thought into Salander's attitude change, as more students had entered behind him and addressed her in one way or another. "Good morning," she said with a smile, generally directing the greeting to everyone who was now finding a seat and settling in. It seemed several of the others were unsure about things, but that would all be cleared up once she started the lesson. At least, she hoped it would be cleared up, as it was hard to tell if everyone in fact understood her subject at least conceptually after only one lesson. They seemed to at least be trying, which was good enough for her.

There had been a special smile for Selina, though. She'd understood the gratitude, and had to return it for the matter that certain facts hadn't seemed to be widely known to the school by now. Secrets were still a part of her life, even if they were slowly unraveling.

"Good morning, Thea," Renée said to the Gryffindor girl as she'd marched into the classroom trailed by a cat. That was new, but not particularly an issue unless the cat liked chewing on things. The creature had to get a few points for just making it all the way to the classroom, really. However, it seemed Thea herself didn't particularly want the cat with her, so she inwardly shrugged. "No need to apologize. Sometimes animals just feel attached, but you're entirely welcome to try to get her to leave," she replied with a reassuring smile. She didn't want the girl feeling uncomfortable for the entire lesson, after all. That could interrupt the concentration needed for practical attempts at any type of Divination.

And the amusement of teaching was back, in the form of Evelyn and Destiny. Renée wondered if Destiny knew she was somewhat able to see through the potion they'd obviously taken, and not just because she'd heard of Hecate's final assignment for the term. Even if she hadn't been able to see through it, at least hypothetically, the girl's words as "Evelyn" would have given her away. As would have "Destiny's" reaction to them, and she smiled at both girls as the real Evelyn dragged the other to the back of the classroom. "Good morning, you two," she said smoothly, not betraying her amusement at all except for the fact she had given them a smile. "I think we'll let a few others filter in, and then I'll start the lesson," she added, speaking to everyone who was now seated and waiting. She wasn't really too concerned with the number of students who arrived, but it was polite to at least wait a few more minutes.

" Thank you" William told Penny. " I guess we just might be partners in this class" William said to Penny.

sweetpinkpixie 07-19-2011 06:30 AM

Kurumi sprinted into the classroom and made a nose on collision with the door. No, this door wasn’t Bill and she knew that Selina was going to have some sort of smart comment about it when she arrived at her seat rubbing her nose and tears in her eyes. Smacking your nose against something serious hurt. Still, it was minor compared to what had happened in their Charms lesson. Selina still hadn’t accepted her apology, so Kurumi wasn’t sure if she should even sit down in her usual seat beside Selina.

Still, as she looked around the classroom, the only available seat was the one next to Selina. Well, that is what she got for being late.

Kurumi smiled at Professor Bishop and then took her seat, glancing once nervously at Selina before turning her attention back to the front.

SilverTiger 07-19-2011 08:06 AM

Okay. Lesson starting now. Technically. xD (Kurumi is noticed though)

It seemed people were starting to get involved in conversations, which meant now was as good a time as any to get the lesson moving. Last one of term, she'd figured she'd be a bit more relaxed, but she still needed to keep control. First, however, she wanted to make sure Kurumi was alright, as the girl seemed to once again have tried to get a bit too close with one of her doors. "Good morning Kurumi," she said, returning the Gryffindor's smile. "Are you alright?" She could answer or not, but Renée couldn't not ask when the girl looked like that.

Of course, they also needed to get things rolling, and she stood up from her chair to move in front of her table, like usual. "Alright. I'd guess most of you are a bit curious as to what we might be discussing today," she said, smiling once again at every one of the students. "Obviously, something related to books. But I'm going to pose a question before anything else." And she paused for a moment, taking a couple steps away from her table before continuing. "How do you think books might be related to Divination?" There were any number of possibilities, really, notwithstanding the one she was going to be teaching in class. It all hinged on how creative they wanted to be, and she knew at least some of them could be rather imaginative.

sweetpinkpixie 07-19-2011 08:21 AM

Kurumi continued to rub her nose and felt extremely self conscious when Professor Bishop asked if she was alright. Kurumi's hands flew to her lap and she nodded her head. "I'm...alright..." And she sure hoped that the door was as well.

At least it didn't seem like she was going to have to dwell on the awkward for too long as Professor Bishop began the class. She had read about some traditional forms of divination from books, but those seemed a bit dry to her at the moment and her mind wasn't able to focus on it for too long. Instead, her mind wandered to a game her brother Takashi and her used to play on rainy days during the typhoon season when they couldn't go down and play at the river. "Perhaps you could take a book, any book really, and ask a question to it with your hands on the cover. Then, you close your eyes, turn to a random page, and have your finger find a random spot on the page. Where ever feels natural to yourself. Then, you open your eyes and read the sentence your finger landed on," she suggested. "I suppose the page number you have opened to and the number of lines from either the top or bottom could also be taken into consideration." Kind of like combining the subjects of Divination and Arithmany in a rather complicated manner. "Using a dictionary in this case could probably be very insightful."

A bit curious? Helena was a little bit more curious than that!

Alright. Books related to Divination?

The girl had a feeling that professor Bishop was not referring to the Divination (text?)books. "Maybe... there are some ancient ones with... ancient magic? That has something to do with Divination?" Uhh... or maybe she shouldn't have said anything at all.

This was confusing.

Weasley174 07-19-2011 08:56 AM

Simon looked at the Professor and smiled raising his hand he said "Maybe you can use the books to read peoples minds and maybe some books are very old and can be used to tell you about divination." Simon had no idea if he was right.

Roselyn 07-19-2011 12:04 PM

She was NOT going to be taking her eyes off of Destiny...herself. Good Merlin, she didn't even know what to call Destiny in her mind! It was rather confusing!

On the other hand, just because she looked like Destiny, didn't mean she wasn't going to act like her normal self. Which meant, Evelyn took out her notebook, quill, and ink as usual, setting them up all perfectly on their table before leaning back in her seat and crossing her arms, ready to sleep. Yup, her normal self. It was only when the Professor started speaking that she noticed all the books. Oh, snaps. Where did those come from? "There are books specifically written to have information about divination...aren't there?" Soooo...a divination book...would be related to divination.

And....yea. That's all she could think of.

Quick Quotes Quill 07-19-2011 12:13 PM

Aham… so the books aren’t here because there is no more spece in the library for them, the girl realized. Now… how are we going to use them? Judging a book by the cover? Nah… that can’t be it. But then… what other explanation could I give? Hmm? After some time, the young ravvie finally had an idea.‘Maybe we could… tell something about a person’s personality by judging the book they pick?’, she answered. Probably it’s wrong, but it was the best idea I could come up with!

Fira 07-19-2011 12:44 PM

There he was...

It was another Divination class and Josh Carter was, of course, present in the classroom sitting silently on a random seat in the middle he had chosen the moment his eyes caught it. Yet, when the boy bothered to look around at the people answering Professor Bishop's question to see who were speaking every time a voice was raised, he saw his beloved she-snake sitting at the back row, as usual, next to her friend Destiny who had just spoken out to answer the question.

Divination books having info about divination. Well...was not this kinda obviously Destiny?

Whatever...

Smirking at his girlfriend (the one he sees as Evelyn), the Gryffindor boy stood up and slowly left his own seat, only to claim the empty one next to Evelyn. Hehe...

Now it was the time to answer this question ''We can burn the books and try to read the smoke...'' Bwahahaha...yea he was not going to read any textbooks and he was sure that his she-snake was going to love this answer. Therefore, looking into her beautiful hazel eyes and smiling warmly, he expected a nice reaction from her.

pundantic 07-19-2011 01:02 PM

Selina sat up as Kurumi walked in the room and smiled at her friend, the Common Room had been a real revelation to Selina as of late. She knew the value of her friend's friendship, especially in this class. After all of the trouble Selina had gotten them in throughout the past two years in Divination she was still a fierce friend and was always there to lend a hand... of course since the Common Room incident she had a slightly better control of her issues.

Then she directed her attention to Professor Bishop and rose her hand, "Well ma'am, I suppose you could use books for research. To get more specific, we use books to learn information so that when we put the practical knowledge into practice it is not as confusing. I mean if you try to just do something without any information on what you are doing isn't that counter-productive. So I guess this could relate to Divination because everything dealing with the future or interpretations of that future need to be dealt with in a manner of deep studying. The future is such a tempermental thing that isn't it just smarter to learn about how to deal with it then just be oblivious?"

Jason Potter Weasley 07-19-2011 05:09 PM

William raised his hand. " The books on Divination can be used for learing about everyone's religion" William said to the professor.

Trish 07-19-2011 05:45 PM

Penny raised her hand...Professor, books can be used to read short term of the future, where the person uses a book and with eyes closed and flips it open, open their eyes and the first word the eye sees is the used for the reading.... although it can be done on new years eve with the bible to see the future year", taking a breath.

Lockhartian 07-19-2011 06:03 PM

couldn't help myself.

Treyen looked towards Kurumi as the Professor asked her if she was alright. His eyes managed to look to the door who had probably suffered more than Kurumi, though. But soon looked to Bishop again. And raised his hand.

"Well, books can be related to anything, actually," any field of research that is, "Whether to pass knowledge on, or simply throw them at people," like Josh, that was going to be burning books, apparently.

"But in Divination, the books that are used have to have some meaning, or being sacred somehow," he nodded, putting down his hand.

Thea smiled, scooping up the big white cat. 'Hm. Well if it's alright, I'll just keep her here?' To save her from terrorising the rest of the animals around the tower..

'A book could help you? Like.. you could pick a book and open it at a random page.. and you could maybe put your finger on a random..' Thea wrinkled her nose. 'Picture!' She grinned. 'Aaand, it could help you! Or tell you something..' Thea nodded, making her whole body wobble. Maleficent chirruped in annoyance.

Ooh! Ooh! Savannah knows this!

"You randomly open the book," Savannah started to say. "Then you point at something random. The words or picture that you are pointing is the answer to the question that you asked. People usually perfer bibles or Shakespeare." But of course, there are a lot of uses of books. "You can also use books to find the meaning of the shapes and patterns you see in tea cups, clouds, crystal balls, etc."

MagicGlitter 07-19-2011 08:59 PM

Ariella raised her hand. It was a difficult question - she wasn't sure she had a right answer or not. "Books with pictures would probably be more related to Diviniation. By looking at certain shapes and meanings in pictures, you could find out what certain objects might mean in a crystal ball." She paused for a moment, thinking. Come to think of it, she did have a question. "Could a book give a hint what may be coming in the future?"

Maria thought for a minute. She raised her hand. "Well, usually a book has a lesson to learn. Sometimes you can predict what that lesson is before you finish the book" she guessed.

Renée had pretty much expected to receive some answers regarding simple reading of books to learn about Divination, that sort of thing, so when she heard the students answer that way, she merely nodded. “Of course books can be read to learn more about other forms of Divination. If you look in the right places, you can research anything. And yes, some books are rather obvious in relaying the message it’s meant to give. However, this wasn’t exactly what I was after, or at least not what we’re going to be discussing this lesson,” she replied gently, noting everyone to give them a point anyhow. They’d at least tried to come up with an answer, and she hadn’t been specific, really. There was no need to say they were completely wrong and disregard the answers. They weren’t.

Of course, then there was Simon. Dear, sweet, naïve Simon who she still suspected tried to give crazy answers to her questions just to get a response from her. Sadly, it worked, if only because Renée still wanted to try and get him to realize he actually knew things about Divination, but he just needed to let it come out. “Not quite, Simon,” she replied gently. “Books can only be used to ‘read people’s minds’ if the person has written their thoughts down inside. Although you’re correct that books can tell a person about Divination. They can’t do much more than tell us about it without interpretation, though.”

But then… what other explanation could I give? Hmm? After some time, the young ravvie finally had an idea.‘Maybe we could… tell something about a person’s personality by judging the book they pick?’, she answered. Probably it’s wrong, but it was the best idea I could come up with!

Moving on from Simon, Renée regarded Gwen with another smile, especially since it had seemed a lot of thought had gone into her answer. The young Ravenclaw did have an interesting idea, even if it wasn’t necessarily Divination-related. “True,” she said slowly. “A person’s choices can tell something about their personalities. That isn’t necessarily Divination, however.” It was still a good answer, so she made a mental note to give the girl a point. Even if stereotypically a good answer should be expected, from a Ravenclaw at least. But they were still looking for the subject of the lesson.

That was definitely not what they were going to be discussing in the lesson today, and Renée gave Josh a bit of a look. If he brought any of her books near a fire, she was definitely going to be a bit, well, angry. However, she wasn’t that surprised at him giving that as an answer, just as she wasn’t surprised when he’d shifted seats to sit near Evelyn and Destiny. Even if she wondered what would happen if he discovered the little secret that was going on between the two girls. She wasn’t going to say anything about that, though. The pyromania was another thing. “We are not going to be burning any books in this lesson, Mr. Carter,” she said succinctly, especially inside the classroom. Or ever, at least around herself. “I’d imagine someone might have tried that as a form of pyromancy, however.” Once again, not around her.

Renée took a breath to get back into her normal mode as several others tried their hand at answering her question, and she had to smile at what they were saying. “It seems we’re going to be getting into the specific topic of this lesson quicker than we thought,” she said with a bit of amusement, her glance landing on Kurumi, Penny, Thea, and Savannah. “What you all described is the basic idea behind bibliomancy. Literally, divination by means of books, and yes, most historical instances, especially in the Muggle world, involve the use of the Bible. Although, any book can be used, if the proper methods are followed.” She lapsed into silence for a moment, wanting to discuss the methods after a few more topics of discussion.

“Before we go into the basic ideas of how to go about using bibliomancy, although in general we already know the method,” since most of the answers she’d responded to had delineated a loose idea of that, “I have another question for you, and this relates more to the idea of bibliomancy than anything else. It can be compared to a couple other forms of Divination, almost directly. Can anyone give me at least one of them?” Of course, she was aiming for two forms, although she had a feeling Tarot might also be mentioned yet again. That was fine, even if she wasn’t about to bring Tarot up yet again on her own. There wasn’t really a need to keep going back to her preferred method of Divination. It just seemed to happen, one way or another.

Simon looked at the Professor. "Is rhapsodomancy one of the two other forms of Divination." Simon had a feeling it was wrong he had heard that word and like the sound of it and so had decided to use it.

Penny put her hand in the air, she was unsure of her answer though "Professor, would Paper Geomancy, be one of those other forms.....i think its something to do with a loaded quill, closed eyes and paper..the shapes the ink makes on the paper or something like that?"

My stepsister was actually a good friend with a true Seer, and she had accurate visions quite often" she said. Although, it hurt Maria's heart to speak about Cass like this. Just talking about her talent rather than who the raspberry-haired girl was in actuality. But Maria had no choice.

Bibliomancy.

It... made sense, now that professor Bishop said it.

As for the two other forms... Helena had no idea. However, she'd heard of something, so she raised her hand. "Does stichomancy count? Or is it the same thing as bibliomancy?" Well... for stichomancy, you need poetry and paragraphs from books, right?

sweetpinkpixie 07-20-2011 06:36 AM

Kurumi scratched the back of her head as she listened to her classmates answer. She had read, very briefly, about a form of bibliomancy in the library, but all she could really remember was the name at the moment. It sounded very complicated and not really like something that Professor Bishop would be able to spend just one class period on, but throwing the suggestion out there couldn't hurt, right?

"Professor, I read something about I Ching being related to bibliomancy..."

Jason Potter Weasley 07-20-2011 06:41 AM

William raised his hand." One part of Divination is Molybdomancy,an act of fortune telling" William told the professor. This can be traced back to Roman times, 17th Century Ireland and common practice in Scandanavia" William explained to the professor.

Quick Quotes Quill 07-20-2011 07:39 AM

Oh, another question that I’m not sure how to answer… Hmm- now let’s think logically, the girl thought. ‘Um… there is Cartomancy? Cartomancy is fortune-telling or divination using a deck of cards.’ Cards… books… meh- they don’t really have much in common, but it was the first thing that crossed my mind. Now think, Gwendolyn- THINK, the young ravvie told herself, really trying to find something smart to say.

‘How about… Runecasting or Runic divination…?’, she started saying and after a short break, she went on talking: ‘There is evidence that in addition to being a writing system runes historically served purposes of magic . So writing would be related to books and magic… well- that’s what we are doing here.’ And there is no chance I could add something or say something smarter. That’s all I know.

Lady of the Lake 07-20-2011 09:17 AM

It was funny how much Ariadne enjoyed Divination lessons, given that she was always confused, way more clueless than the other students. Still, she attempted to answer the question, obviously not expecting to be right.

'Is bibliomancy somehow related to oneiromancy, the interpretation of dreams?' the Gryffindor first year suggested. 'Dreams are a product of our subconscious, which also determines the sentences or words we choose in a book. And also, in the Bible, dreams are often mentioned as omens or means by which God communicates with the mortals, and the Bible is also the most used book in bibliomancy.' A bit of explaination made the answer seem less dumb, at least. There were also lots of books on dream interpretation...

Destiny 07-20-2011 01:25 PM

From the moment Evelyn dragged her to the back of the room, a scowl etched it's way onto Destiny's face. That was a very Evelyn thing to do, right? Scowl at everything? Yes, it was.

So, that's why, when Josh turned to face her, she scowled at him, too.

Until he decided to stand up and make his way over. To sit next to her. Giving an almost horrified look towards Evelyn or..herself, Destiny began scooting her chair closer to her friend, and away from the boy. She could only imagine what would happen if he tried to touch her..

He was LOOKING at her. And SMILING! She had no idea why either. She was not paying attention to the answer he gave, and..he needed to stop that smiling. It was creeping her out. A lot.

Scooting even closer to Evelyn, Destiny used her index finger to poke Josh in the cheek to turn his face towards the front of the class. "Don't look at me. I'm..contagious." Cough.

Professor Bishop would understand if she didn't answer any questions, right? She was too creeped out to.

Josh's eyes widened when he saw the look Professor Bishop gave him. Was she...like going to attack him because of that? But the tought put a little smirk on his face, for actually he would like to see her try doing that. Attacking him. However it looked like that it was unlikely she would do that unless he did a move to burn a book and nope he was not going to try to burn her books. He could consider it if they were his own book but, nope, he would not be harming someone else's books even thought he did not particularly like books.

But everything else to do with books must have been boring, right? He supposed so as books were boring stuff if used for the right purpose. That was why he was feeling a bit disappointed. He did not want the class to be boring. ''I see, professor'' he said with a quick nod and closed his mouth before the comments about how boring books were could escape his mouth. Oh, but someone might have tried it ''Wise man that was then, i would say.''

And had he been thinking about disappointment because of not being able to burn the books? If he had been then he had to reconsider it since what had just happened was much more disappointing than anything else that might happen during the lesson: Evelyn was scowling at him and, oddly, she did not look so happy to see him either.

And just why was she moving away from him? That was...not good. So, the boy's happy smile vanished before she poked his face away telling him not to look at her. Now he was supposed not to look at her? But why? ''What do you mean contagious, hun?'' he asked and looked back at her despite the poking act, looking confused...and of course disappointed. ''Don't you know...'' yet silence fell on him when he realised that she was moving away from him more and more. ''Did i do something wrong?''

So Bibliomancy, huh? Though it sounded interesting in a sense despite his thoughts of anything else to do with books would be boring, Josh was not really paying attention to it. Well...to be more exact he was unable to pay attention because of the way his girlfriend was treating him. Plus, he had no idea whatever forms that Bibliomany had anyway.

Magical Soul 07-20-2011 04:24 PM

... it was getting on her nerves. Louisa didn't like sitting around in a place where the only words she could understand were the 'is' and the 'the' :-/ which was why she rarely showed up for Arthimancy... and when she did, she'd brought some book to read while the teacher and students had their fun time with numbers. Meh.

But this was Divination! She should enjoy it! And this bibliomancy talking was no way near her interests. Being a Ravenclaw though saved her from sitting like a statue for the rest of the lesson. She did remember her mom talking about rhapsodomancy being related to poems and Divination so she raised her hand to give it a shot, "could it be reading a random passage from a poem, professor? Rha-pso-do-mancy?" the last word was said in syllables for the sake of no-embarrassing-situations during her last lesson.

Failing try?

elllla_Wtwins 07-20-2011 05:28 PM

Thea could only think of.. 'seeing' and somebody had already mentioned that..
Her Grandmother had had some accurate visions.. and she used Tarot cards and so on..
Well.. to be honest Grandma was a bit of a weirdo.. in a good way of course.
The little Gryffindor chewed her lip, stroking Maleficent while she purred like some sort of engine. Instead of putting her hand up, she merely wrote it down.

GoldenSnake 07-20-2011 09:11 PM

"How about chartomancy?" Savannah suggested hopefully. "It's divination by doing things on paper." Paper...books...paper...books...that could possibly work. Though Savannah thought that the answers that the other students gave were better.

Anna Banana 07-20-2011 10:33 PM

Umm...what?

Was there a question in there somewhere? See, this was why Sierra hated Divination. Apparently, a question had been asked, and she'd been so caught up on trying to figure out what Bibliomancy was that she'd completely overlooked the question. She went back over what she'd just heard. Something about comparing something to something else. Comparing Bibliomancy to other forms of Divination, ...right.

...like she knew that. Psh.

She'd at least read a little bit of the textbook beforehand, though. "Rhapsodomancy," she tried to pronounce, her hand in the air. "I really have no idea what it is, but it has something to do with reading poetry." She shrugged. "Maybe tarot readings, too, since they're a form of reading."

As answers started coming, Renée started wondering if her question had been a bit too confusing. Either completely or just because it was nearing exam time and the end of term, when she knew students were more apt to not want to really think as much as they needed to. Either way, it seemed half of the answers weren’t related to bibliomancy at all, but she still gave Penny, Maria, and William a smile. “I’d imagine that would be more connected to tasseomancy, and the other forms related to symbolism, rather than bibliomancy, Penny, but that was still a good thought. As are Seeing and molybdomancy, but not exactly what I was looking for,” she replied gently. “Perhaps we should get back to just focusing on bibliomancy.” Especially as she didn’t want the discussion of Seeing to make anyone uncomfortable. Things had changed, but there was still the possibility, as far as she knew.

Moving on, Renée smiled at Ariadne as the young girl went into an explanation as to how she thought oneiromancy was related to bibliomancy. “Not that I’m aware of,” she replied, “but good thinking. It’s not so much subconscious, though, that determines what you receive during a bibliomantic reading. In fact, some people make it an entirely random circumstance, using outside items to choose the passage to be interpreted. We’ll discuss that in a moment.” She found the argument that dreams were mentioned in the Bible, and that book being most commonly used even more interesting, but it still didn’t necessarily make it true. “Also, it’s not so much the content of whatever book being used that is the focus. As mentioned earlier, people can use any book at all when attempting bibliomancy. Dream analysis is simply just another form of Divination in general, not really connected to bibliomancy.”

Going back to Gwen and Savannah as the two girls suggested their own ideas as to what she’d been aiming for, Renée gave each of them another smile. Still wasn’t exactly what she’d wanted, but at least they were getting closer. Plus, there was the connection to Tarot that she’d expected. “Chartomancy is more of a broad category, than a true form of Divination,” she replied, giving Savannah a nod as well. “And yes, bibliomancy is often included under that category, but it’s not exactly what I was aiming for. Neither was cartomancy, although that form is commonly considered similar to bibliomancy. It is also categorized under chartomancy, though,” she continued, moving on to Gwen’s suggestions. “Runic divination is considered a branch of cleromancy, however. Divination by casting… but you’re correct in the assumption that there is the connection of reading, as well as writing. It just isn’t quite connected to bibliomancy.”

It... made sense, now that professor Bishop said it.

As for the two other forms... Helena had no idea. However, she'd heard of something, so she raised her hand. "Does stichomancy count? Or is it the same thing as bibliomancy?" Well... for stichomancy, you need poetry and paragraphs from books, right?

It sounded very complicated and not really like something that Professor Bishop would be able to spend just one class period on, but throwing the suggestion out there couldn't hurt, right?

"Professor, I read something about I Ching being related to bibliomancy..."

As she continued hearing the answers the students were giving, Renée actually was taken by surprise as, among the others who had at least successfully guessed the ideas she was aiming for, little Simon had actually said something right. She’d known he had the ability, but it still surprised her. She responded to Kurumi’s idea first, however. “I wasn’t exactly speaking of I Ching divination, but yes. It is generally connected to bibliomancy, by way of the idea of randomization that I’ve alluded to and we’ll discuss in a moment. In general, however, we won’t be discussing much about the complexity of the I Ching today.” Even if she’d considered herself capable of teaching that form, it would most likely take almost an entire term to really get them to understand how it worked. Definitely more than just one class period.

However, the two forms that she actually had been directing them toward had been mentioned, so her focus shifted back to Simon, Helena, Louisa and Sierra. It was interesting that they were all younger students, but really not something to comment on. “In fact, I was referring to stichomancy. And rhapsodomancy, so two points to all four of you,” she replied with another smile, before being a bit more specific. “Yes, Helena, in many ways stichomancy could just be another term for bibliomancy in general, but in a more specific sense it is referring to the concept of randomization in picking the passage to interpret that is important to not getting a biased reading. Just as rhapsodomancy isn’t exactly the same as bibliomancy due to its use of poetry as opposed to any book.” They still were close enough that she’d wanted to discuss them, at least slightly.

“Anyway, let’s move on, now that we’ve established an idea of what bibliomancy is and what it is not,” she said with a grin, walking a few more steps away from her table and the center of the room. Now seemed as good a time as any to go back to the method used in bibliomancy, at least, so she tried to direct them that way. “Basic bibliomancy has three steps it follows to do a reading. Does anyone want to give me one of those steps?” She figured at least the first one ought to be rather obvious, but any of the three would be better than her simply telling them all what to do. She was trying for a discussion after all.

Kurumi nodded at Professor Bishop spoke a bit about the form of divination the third year had brought up. From the very small amount she had read about it, it had seemed like a very complicated for of the craft and, to be entirely honest, she was rather glad that they would not be diving into that subject today. She wasn't sure that her brain could handle the complexity right now.

"Well, first you pick a book," Kurumi said after a few moments. "Then, you balance it on the spine and allowed it to fall open to whatever page it chooses to. Then, you close your eyes and pick a random passage."

It actually seemed like a fun game to play at parties when you thought about it. Perhaps Kurumi could try it in the girls' dormitory sometime.

Hmmm, she'd seen Josh get up, mostly because half her attention was on him during these lessons, so she rather expected him to sit next to her. Mostly because he was headed their way, and there was no reason NOT to sit next to her.

...

Why wasn't he sitting next to her!?

Oh...wait. Seeing HERSELF sitting there, Evelyn remembered that she was not herself at the moment. She was in fact Destiny. ZOMG and his answer was brilliant. Why didn't she think of that?

"Well, books can be related to anything, actually," any field of research that is, "Whether to pass knowledge on, or simply throw them at people," like Josh, that was going to be burning books, apparently.

"But in Divination, the books that are used have to have some meaning, or being sacred somehow," he nodded, putting down his hand.

Then his eyes followed someone's voice. THE GENIUS. Of course, she was RIGHT about that, Treyen winked towards her and nodded, as if to say 'Yes, there are books about Divination'. Good, Destiny.

A little put down that Josh didn't know she was actually Evelyn, even though it was slightly impossible to know unless she spoke up about it, the Slytherin girl leaned back in her seat all sad like and turned her attention elsewhere. She didn't want to see Josh giving DESTINY that expression.

...Apparently she was going to have to.

Did TrainBoy just wink at her?

WHAT!?

"I am NOT contagious!"

Wait...what was Destiny talking about?

Sierra glared at Hollingberry. Of course the know-it-all had to call out all three when the professor had clearly only asked for one. Sierra secretly hoped the Gryffindor would lose a point or two for that. She doubted it, though. Sierra turned away from Hollingberry and looked back at the professor. Renée actually was rather pleased that so many people were willing to answer, as to the basic methods of bibliomancy. Of course, she wasn’t particularly surprised that Kurumi had given all three, but then, so had Samira, Helena and Gwen. “All of you are correct,” she said with a smile. “The basic method is to select a book, generally one that ‘holds truth’ or at least might have some relation to your question, balance it on its spine so it falls open to a random page, and then pointing to a passage with your eyes closed. And yes, as is true with just about any method of Divination, focus on the object of your search, the question, is necessary, ” she repeated, before glancing at “Destiny”. “I wouldn’t recommend throwing the book, even if it did land open. Especially with some Wizarding books, they might not appreciate the treatment,” she added with a wry smile. The owner of the book might not appreciate it either.

But back to the rest of the answers, as some of them held questions that she figured probably should be answered. Some of them she thought had gotten answered in her earlier explanation, but she returned her glance to William. “I wouldn’t actually recommend that, as it takes away some of random quality of the reading. Unless you are using another method of choosing the passage, I would suggest selecting another book entirely if you felt the first reading wasn’t complete. Just like you would perform a second reading in Cartomancy if the first wasn’t clear. You wouldn’t just shift the cards around, or add more after your spread was complete.” And there she was, going back to what she was the most familiar with, so she turned her attention to some of the other questions. “I would think the presence of animals and/or symbols in the selected passage would make it a bit more difficult to interpret, but I don’t believe it would change the meaning entirely,” she added, in response to Penny’s question. The more details there were in the text, the more aspects would exist regarding possible meanings, but that only made the possibilities more open.

Either way, she couldn’t leave him there, so she slipped her wand out of its holster and pointed it at him, casting a quick, nonverbal Rennervate before moving on with the discussion. Hopefully he would be alright, but if not she’d send him to the Hospital Wing. She didn’t have a lot of time to interrupt the lesson.

“Moving on,” she said finally, taking a breath. “It seems like a lot of you might be curious as to the types of books that can be used, so why don’t we discuss that a little. Obviously religious texts are used most often, but that doesn’t mean they are the only choices. There are historical instances of other books being used,” she continued, glancing out the window next to one of the bookshelves just to determine the time for a moment. There was still enough to hopefully help them all understand the lesson. “Can anyone suggest one of those instances, when a non-religious text was used?” For the time being, she’d stick with Muggle history, but she wanted to explore Wizarding possibilities shortly. Starting at the beginning was easiest, though.

Sierra raised her hand. "There was once a poet by the name of Robert Browning who used Bibliomancy to find out if his relationship with some woman would work out. He chose a random book from the library, "Cerutti’s Italian Grammar" it was called," she explained. Nevermind how she knew that. In all honesty, though, she'd been bored last night after dinner and had actually read the chapter in lieu of going to sleep early. "So anyway, he let it randomly fall open, and he went straight to a sentence about loving someone for eternity."

Louisa stared at the fainting boy with a jaw-dropped effect. She thought she was dramatic! Looked like a Huffie just beat her to it. Okay, back to the lesson, she raised her hand, "Does Almanacs book work, Professor?" She wasn't sure, "It is an ancient book written by a diviner. Or was it about the bibliomancy rather than a tool in the process?" >__<

Penny had heard of this Robert Browning in her Muggle primary school, before reading his poetry the teacher would give a brief history, and the girls on the class loved the romance of it all...

Unfortunately, Sierra had just given him as an example - and Penny didn't know of anyone else... but she was still thinking hard for a second example.

Kurumi thought for a moment and remembered a story that her brother, Junichiro, had told her when she was younger. Junichiro always hated the rainy day games they had played inside, Kurumi’s favorite being that they would turn to a random word in the dictionary, someone would read the definition, and then everyone would have to guess what the word was. Her father had come up with the idea as a means for them to practice their English, but Junichiro had never been one to study and had told her a terrible story. Kurumi hadn't been able to look at a dictionary for months.

“I’ve heard stories about a serial killer named Dell who believes the dictionary is the most powerful book in the world. He would use the dictionary to guide all his actions.”

Well, after the last term's Muggle Studies lessons, Helena kept reading muggle books. Hehe.

'I think there was.... an english poet Robert Browning?', the girl started saying. I know he is somehow related to this subject, but I'm not sure exactley how... Let's see...., Gwen thought, trying to come up with something.I read about him somewhere... 'I think... there might have been the situation of a book falling down from a shelf on its own', the Ravenclaw went on talking. So... what's the point? Decidin not to start the next sentance with 'I think', Gwen went on: 'He used this method to ask about the fate of his enchantment to Elizabeth Barret. He was at first disappointed to choose the book "Cerutti’s Italian Grammar", but on randomly opening it his eyes fell on the following sentence: ‘if we love in the other world as we do in this, I shall love thee to eternity'' There, that seems all right, hopefully...

Simon was awake suddenly on the floor, he had no idea what was going on or why he was on the floor, he was a bit confused about that the last thing he remembered was actually getting a question right, so why would he be on the floor.

Simon looked at the Professor. "Professor Bishop, why am I on the floor?" Simon then half hear what she said, it had something to do with books. "Would you be able to use a children book?"

Penny remembered something...putting her hand in the air again..."Professor there was a muggle writer called Jules Vern who wrote a fictional book about a guy who made another guy go blind by randomly pointing out a phrase in the 'Koran'..something about '"And he will no more see the things of this earth."' and the guy went blind".

Thinking about it, Penny was sure she was right... but chances are she was wrong.

Before dealing with any of the answers she’d gotten in response to the last question she’d asked, Renée wanted to deal with Simon and his apparent confusion. Since obviously he didn’t remember fainting, it was going to take some careful explanation, or avoidance. “You slipped, Simon,” she said gently. It wasn’t entirely untrue, since he had slipped from his chair. She just didn’t particularly want to point out his fainting to the entire class, if they hadn’t already noticed it. “Do you feel okay with staying in class, or would you rather go visit Healer Moretti?” She could always send Lily a note, explaining that he’d fainted.

But back to the lesson, and she decided to start with those who hadn’t exactly answered her question. Their suggestions weren’t bad, just more directed toward ideas of books that could be used as opposed to known instances of them being used. For the most part. “Almanacs is more a book, or series of books, detailing the prophecies made by Nostradamus. I’d imagine it would be possible to attempt bibliomancy with them, but not necessary since the text already is predicting events and the like,” she replied to Louisa with a smile, before turning it to William, Isabelle and Savannah, as well as Simon yet again. “At least in theory, any book could be used when attempting bibliomancy. Historically, Homer actually has been a common author, in fact. Classical bibliomancy, as in ancient Greece and Rome, tended to go in one of two directions. They either used the Aeneid, by Virgil, or the Iliad and the Odyssey.” Indirectly, Savannah actually had hit on an answer she’d been trying to get. As well as several of the other students, who she then went on to address.

Renée nodded at Sierra as she mentioned the story about Robert Browning. Probably one of the most commonly known examples of a historic use of bibliomancy. “Yes, there is a story that Robert Browning used bibliomancy to determine if he should pursue Elizabeth Barrett. That example also goes to show how literally any book can be used for bibliomantic purposes. One wouldn’t generally think a grammar text would accurately give you direction in your romantic life,” she responded. In fact, even Robert Browning hadn’t originally thought it would be useful. Anyone who studied the lives of poets knew it had been, however. At least in this case.

Renée nodded again as Kurumi, Helena and Penny also offered ideas that worked in relation to the question that was asked. “Yes, bibliomancy often features in works of fiction,” she said with a smile. Of course, it sounded like Kurumi had been led to believe the story she’d heard wasn’t just fiction, but hopefully knowing it was would just help the girl feel better about it. “And these instances also continue to show that just about any book can be used in a Divinatory capacity, although in some cases it is taken to a bit of an extreme.” She wouldn’t recommend anyone using bibliomancy, or any form of Divination, to cover for nefarious dealings. Even if sometimes fate was cruel, there was always still free will to factor into the mix.

But now she figured was as good a time as any to continue the class discussion. As they needed to move on from Jules Verne, serial killers and Homer, at least somewhat. Moving toward the bookshelves again, she turned to regard the class once more with another smile. “Now that, I think, you’ve seen how any book can be used, I’m curious if any of you have an idea what book we could possibly use in class to see if we could use bibliomancy ourselves,” she said with a bit of amusement in her voice. “I’m not necessarily saying I’ll expect everyone to try, but just in case… If you could use any book for bibliomancy, what would it be?” Of course, there wasn’t any way she had every possible book in the classroom at one time. However, it could tell her a bit about the students, not to mention be fun if they in fact mentioned anything she had at the moment.

Hmmm what books?

...

"I've heard that the Bible has been used," Helena spoke hesitantly, with her hand in the air. "Is that right?" Or maybe it sounded silly? Maybe not?

They might as well use a dictionary, since they needed something that is believed to hold truth. Well... the dictionary would not lie to them, would it?

Better not say that out loud.

"What about our Arithmancy textbook?" Sierra asked, her hand in the air. "There's lots of things about our past, present, and future in it." She lowered her hand before adding, "Or would that even work considering we're supposed to use numbers to get a reading from it?" As she quietened down, she couldn't believe she was actually suggesting using the Arithmancy textbook when she didn't even have to use it. Sierra and Arithmancy didn't go well together, after all. Then again, though, neither did Sierra and Divination...

Doing it in class? That should be fun! Louisa listened to two of her classmate's suggestions. They were good. Particularly the Bible. It was a sacred book, right? Believe to be written by higher Power, right? It made sense to her more than the Arithmancy textbook O__O Who understood what was inside of it? She gave the girl who suggested it a long admiration look- she must be S.M.A.R.T.

Moving on to her own suggestion, she raised her hand, "Or what about The Tales of Beedle the Bard!" Mmm? It wasn't as childish as it used to be thought of, right? Didn't the Wizarding world survived because of one of its tales? That was what she thought!

Raising an eyebrow, he stared back at her then raised both his eyebrows when she reacted to what Evelyn had said about being contagious.

Had she happened to think that Evelyn was talking about her mentioning someone contagious? Or maybe she had really been talking about Destiny and he just had misunderstood it. Yeah, it should have been that way. It did indeed make sense to him.

''Are you sure about that?'' the boy then replied and of course snorted at her answer to Professor Bishop. Well...actually it sounded reasonable and the Divination Professor liked it yet...she was Destiny so she needed to be snorted at. ''Why don't you balance the book on your own spine instead? Bishop has just told me that it works better that way''

Of course at first Josh had not felt like he would like this class about...bibliomancy?...for it involved books yet when it came to his knowledge that it was about reading random parts of a book...not the whole of it, the Gryffindor boy had started to be...interested in it. When Bishop asked them a book to use for bibliomancy, many ideas appeared in Josh's mind. He chose one and was about to mention it yet....

Kurumi thought for a moment. What book would she use? There were so many books that she had enjoyed and it seemed like a near impossible task to select just one. As she picked her brain, Kurumi's mind kept coming back to one author. It was someone that her brother, Takashi, really admired and would often read his works to Kurumi during the springtime when the cherry blossoms were in full bloom. "I think I would select something from Matsuo Basho. He wrote haiku that are very deep in meaning and can speak to you on so many levels. My favorite would probably be Oku no Hosomichi."

SilverTiger 07-27-2011 08:17 AM

We need to finish things up in the next couple of days. :/

If she was completely honest, listening to the few responses she'd gotten to her question would have made Renée think people weren't really listening. Since she was fairly certain nobody thought she had copies of the Bible in the classroom, but it was still a good answer. As was the others, and she gave Helena, Sierra, Josh, Louisa and Kurumi smiles. Even if at least the Gryffindor boy's had seemed vaguely dangerous, as most of his answers did. Plus, she most decidedly had not said anything about balancing books on anyone's spines.

She might as well get things moving, anyhow, as she had a feeling the lesson could get a bit crazy if they were allowed to go off on their own longer. "Those are all good answers, and I'd imagine most of you have both the Arithmancy textbook and the Care of Magical Creatures textbooks with you. But I don't think we'll use either of those today. Or the Bible, although you are definitely correct, Helena. That is a common book that is used," she said, going back to moving around the room as she spoke. "The works of Basho are good as well, although that might be more along the lines of rhapsodomancy. Which is a bit more specific than I think we'll go in class today." Perhaps another time. Of course, she hadn't quite addressed the last of the suggestions.

"Why don't we explore the possibility that Louisa brought up. The idea that we can use The Tales of Beedle the Bard to learn more than what the stories tell us in themselves," she continued, with another little grin as she glanced at her bookshelves once again. That was certainly an easy enough book to locate, or duplicate, for the lesson. "Of course, you'd need to think of a question, but I'd imagine we could try and see if it could be used as a bibliomantic resource..." Moving back to her table at the front of the room, she sat down again. "I think you have the basic idea, and I'd prefer it if nobody threw any books across the room. But either way, feel free to take one of the copies off my shelves and try bibliomancy out," she continued. "I don't necessarily expect everyone to be successful, but there's always the possibility." And she could think about a few things while they tried it out. well, if nobody had any more questions.

ooc: Okay, I'm leaving the lesson open for another couple of days. For you guys to RP trying to use Beedle the Bard as a resource for bibliomancy. Obviously, you don't have to actually try it, but I'd be interested if at least your characters did. Pretty sure it wouldn't be hard to locate lines from the stories... I'll keep checking in, and answer questions if need be, and the lesson will probably wrap up after I get back from work on Thursday night. ^.^

Penny removed her Tales of Beedle The Bard from her bag.... Then closed her eyes, thinking of a question to ask it... Deciding on whether or not she would be healthy and wealthy in her life...

Placing the book on its spine, she let it fall open, her eyes still closed, and let her finger rest on one of the open pages...
Opening her eyes again, she read the sentence and almost fell from her chair...

"Oh Professor, this is so weird, my finger landed on the sentence '"For instance... falling in love would adversely affect his comfort and security"'......It's weird because, my arithmany readings told me almost the same thing"

Penny felt a shiver run down her spine... the fact her finger picked that sentence was actually quite creepy...

Jumping off her chair, too excitedly, she headed to one of the shelves to get a copy of the book. She was going to try it out! It was so endearing to know something out of a book.. especially one that you've read over and over again before. No codes, no numbers, no difficult long paragraphs. Not that she had problems with those but still...

"I'm going to try it out! For real!" She announced proudly, the whole class should know that she was not the coward and wimp girl she was known to be. Louisa was about to reveal her future in public, wasn't she? *nodnod*

Grabbing the book from a low shelf, she quickly went back to her chair, dragged it from behind the desk to the front to have enough room for a dramaticAct good throwing act. She stepped on it, sending an apologetic smile to the Professor, and held the book from its two covers, open, high above her head. And closed her eyes, I want to know if my exam results would be great this semester, she ordered the psychic powers of this book before releasing it to faaaaaaall to the ground with a thud. She hadn't spun it or whatever, throwing it open would do, right? 'Coz she couldn't see a difference.

Hmmm. She opened her eyes and glared down at it. She hadn't expected it to be.. so ordinary. The fall should've been a bit unusual. Meh. Jumping down to the ground, she knelt before the book lying facedown on the ground and caaarefully put her thumb between the open pages as she turned it around eye closed. Then pointed randomly at the page with one finger and opened her eyes.

SPOILER!!: Louisa's Paragraph! :P
One morning, as the charlatan and the foolish King were twirling their twigs, and hopping in circles, and chanting meaningless rhymes, a loud cackling reached the King’s ears. Babbitty the washerwoman was watching the King and the charlatan from the window of her tiny cottage, and was laughing so hard she soon sank out of sight, too weak to stand.

Then glancing back at Sierra, he kept smirking and ran a hand through his hair randomly while still staring at her ''I think you can make good use of that book''

Hehehehehe...

Sierra had been content to just fall silent and wait for the next part of the lesson; but no, Lion Boy had other plans apparently. Sierra glared at him out of the corner of her, and then her gaze turned to Professor Bishop. What?! Was he going to be allowed to just get away with that?! Putting down her answer in the middle of class?!

...and did he actually think Sierra cared about her suggestion being the easy way out?! Of course she wanted the easy way out! What Slytherin didn't?! ...Gryffindors. She shook her head, rolled her eyes, and then looked away. She wasn't idiotic enough to respond to his comments here in class, where she could so easily get into trouble and get thrown out of this Saturday's championship match. She'd get him, though...

That was certainly an easy enough book to locate, or duplicate, for the lesson. And she could think about a few things while they tried it out. well, if nobody had any more questions.

She passed Josh one last cold look then stood from her seat and went to retrieve a copy of Beedle the Bard. Once back at her seat, she balanced the book on its spine and then let it fall open. Hmm...page 30. Then she randomly looked at the page and came upon a sentence about halfway down:
Taking her wand, she drew from her mind all the happy times she had spent with her vanished lover, and dropped them into the rushing water.
Umm...what? Vanished lover?

Who vanished? ...and who had she been in love with?! This was rubbish! Well, it was Divination, so what did she expect?

On her parchment, under the sentence, she added:

This makes no sense. I've never been in love...only in like; and the person hasn't vanished...

...or did this mean he would vanish? Hmm. That wouldn't be so bad--Treyen disappearing for a day or two during the championship game. It'd increase Slytherin's chances of winning drastically.

xD I would have done that too, Anna.

Keeping an eye on the students as they went ahead to follow her directions, Renée couldn't help but smile a little as she saw the various ways they did. Just the fact that some of them seemed to carry the Tales around with them was interesting, but she stood up again as Penny spoke. Walking over to the Hufflepuff girl's table, she gave her the slightest of nods. "It's not necessarily creepy. Perhaps that just means that the message is important enough to warrant repeating, or that something thinks you didn't quite understand what it was telling you in Arithmancy," she said gently. Actually, the fact the message was similar made her think that it was true, or at least extraordinarily coincidental.

Any real consideration of the implications of what Penny saw as creepy didn't seem likely to happen, though, as Simon spoke up again not long after she'd spoken to his housemate. Turning her attention to him, her expression turned concerned at his words. He'd not responded to her earlier question if he thought he needed to go visit the Hospital Wing, but right now that seemed like the best idea. "Would you like to be excused from the remainder of the lesson, go have Healer Moretti look you over?," she asked gently. She could always ask another student to accompany him .

Ooooh this sounded like fun!

Helena stood up and went to take a copy of The Tales of Beedle the Bard, since she wasn't sure whether professor Bishop would be alright with books flying around her classroom or not. She walked back to her seat and balanced the book on the spine, and then let if fall open. She didn't really notice the page, but she definitely recognized the tale. Babbitty Rabbitty and her Cackling Stump.

SPOILER!!:
“She has turned herself into a tree!” screamed the charlatan and, dreading lest Babbitty turn back into a woman and denounce him, he added, “Cut her down, Your Majesty, that is the way to treat evil witches!”

Blink, blink.

... and some more blinks.

What was that supposed to mean?!

"Professor?" She could barely find her voice. "Is it allowed to try again?" Because that part... wasn't exactly telling her anything.

Fira 07-28-2011 08:59 AM

I did the same thing and...ROFL

SPOILER!!: Sierra and Professor Bishop

OOC: Yup. Lines in the quote are from 'The Tale of Three Brothers' of 'The Tales of Beedle The Bard' by JK. Rowling :)

Josh could feel the radiating evilness of Poisonous Princess even from where he was sitting in this classroom. He knew probably, right now, she was thinking about some good means of hurting him yet...when she did not speak, the Gryffindor had to admit that it was a bit weird. Sierra not talking back?

Oh wait...

Of course she had stared his way and the look was not a nice one. Eh? What kind of a look one could expect from the Poisonous Princess? Of course a poisonous one! It was like a death glare. Neverless before she turned away to be busy with her book, Josh grinned at her. Hehehe. Of course, just to remind her that he was scared of no poison spitted on him or any other evil means.

Leaving his seat for a moment or so, Josh walked to the shelves and picket up a copy of The Tales of Beedle The Bard for himself. To be honest, he had no idea what was in that book. He had not read it yet since it said 'tales' in the title so it had to be a story book. Hehehe. Nice reasoning.

Once he got back to his seat, he balanced the book on its spine, on the desk, then let it fall open. And without losing a split second, he stared at the page to read whatever sentence would be first caught in his gaze.

Quote:

...Finally the second brother, driven mad with hopeless longing, killed himself so as to truly join her. So death took the second brother for his own.
First he froze, which maybe lasted a minute or so, yet then the lion boy's eyes narrowed. This was not fair. Not fair at all. Looking up at Bishop, he blinked a few times before speaking up. ''Professor! Professor! I think Sierra messed with my book. Maybe she has put some of her will in it and...it happened. I mean...this happened.''

"Hey bud, you ok?", she whispered over to him...

Simon looked at the Professor. "Professor Bishop, I think i'll feel fine after some fresh air." He didn't want to disturb the nurse, Simon had no idea why he felt so funny but maybe it had to due with him slipping in the class though normally he wouldn't feel like this, he was sure the Professor was hiding something.

Simon looked at Penny he was confused that she was asking him if he was okay, he was sure that Penny hated him so why was she so concern now. "I'll be fine after some fresh air."

Returning to her seat with a copy of the book, she turned to Maleficent. 'Ok.. now while I'm doing this, do not disturb me!' She frowned at the cat, who frowned right back lashing her tails backwards and forwards.

Sighing, Thea closed her eyes. Balancing the book on its spine, she let it fall open randomly. Breathing out, looking straight ahead Thea jabbed a finger on a random line. While she did this the same query was racing round and round in her head. Will Dad be home this summer? And if so, will he be.. normal again? Thea had no idea why this particular question was chosen. She didn't normally waste time worrying about her father..

She read and reread the small paragraph that hse had 'chosen'. Um.. did this eman she needs to bathe more?..
Text Cut: Thea's lines from The Fountain of Fair Fortune

The Fountain shimmered before them, set amidst herbs and flowers rarer and more beautiful than they had yet seen. The sky burned ruby, and it was time to decide which of them would bathe.

Granted Penny hadn't always seen eye to eye with Simon, but he was a fellow badger after all.... and our house is like our family here, she thought and if one of her family looked unwell - she would ask after them too...

So Penny had asked him if he was ok... but the look he'd just sent her, made Penny wish she hadn't asked at all...

.....Really, boys could be so asinine sometimes....

Kurumi retrieved a copy of Tales of Beedle the Bard and returned to her seat. Truth be told, she had yet to actually read any of these stories. She did enjoy fairy tales, she had read those by the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen, but wizarding ones always seemed to just missed her must read list for each term. Perhaps she should look into borrowing a copy of the book and reading it over the summer. She did have a long flight from Japan to New York.

Right, she needed to ask a question....Turning the book on its binding, Kurumi closed her eyes and thought for a few moments. So much had happened this term and her mind was swimming with so many different concerns that it was had to flesh out just ONE thing she wanted to ask. Still, everything came back to the summer and the grand adventure she would be taking part in. Will my study abroad experience this summer go well?

She dropped the book and let her finger run over the page for a moment before her eyes snapped back open. "The three witches and the knight set off down the hill together, arm in arm, and all four led long and happy lives, and none of them ever knew or suspected that the Fountain's waters carried no enchantment at all," she read aloud. She then cocked her head to the side like a baby owl and frowned. She really should have read the stories because she didn't have a clue how to relate the passage to her question. Words like happy seemed to trigger a positive response though...and there were four people, so she assumed that meant she would make friends while abroad.

Selina looked around the room as all of the students started to grab their books and copies of the Tales of the Beedle the Bard. Once they were all settled people seemed to be asking questions silently and partaking in the assignment. Part of Selina did not want to get up and try. The trying part of Divination never ended well for Selina, but she sucked it up and got out of her seat. She grabbed the book and returned to her seat.

Upon sitting she closed her eyes and thought hard on a question. So many were milling around in her head and she had no idea which one to ask. But in the cloud of questions one was clear in her head- Will I ever be free of the burden of Danielle's death?

She flipped open the book and landed on one line that startled her, "Having transferred his greatest treasure to the deepest dungeon, he gave himself over to a life of ease and plenty, his comfort the only aim of his many servants."

WHAT. DID. THAT. MEAN?

From the Tale of the Three Brothers -

Quote:

But though Death searched for the third brother for many years, he was never able to find him. It was only when he had attained a great age that the youngest brother finally took off the Cloak of Invisibility and gave it to his son. And then he greeted Death as an old friend, and went with him gladly, and, equals, they departed this life.
William raised his hand. " My quote has to with the future" Wiliam told the professor. " This also has to do with a prediction that the son could use " the Cloak of Invisibily" William said to the professor. " This is like a book of Astorlogy like I mentioned" Willaim explained to the professor.

*sighs* Gotta start wrapping things up...

Listening to the questions that kept coming, from just about every student, Renée had to decide whether it was worth it to answer each one individually, or just call the practical portion of the lesson, well, not as successful as some. Another glance at the time decided that for her, though. It may have been nearing the end of term, but that didn't mean it would be alright to keep them for longer than a class period. Returning to the front of the classroom, she gave Simon a slight nod to indicate she'd heard his statement that he only needed fresh air, then turned to the whole group.

"It seems a lot of you aren't exactly discovering anything particularly enlightening," she said gently. There could be any number of reasons for that; not asking the correct questions, not concentrating... not believing they'd learn anything. making a long story short, however, most of them didn't seem to be having as much fun as they could with bibliomancy. or, in the case of certain students, they might be having too much fun. "Keep in mind that the answer might not be obvious," she continued, before glancing at William as he'd spoken. That response was the oddest she'd ever gotten. "William, I'm not certain you understand the intent of bibliomancy. You don't interpret the quote in itself, just take what the quote says and apply it to a question of your own." Unless he'd simply been curious about the meaning behind the Tale of the Three Brothers.

"In any case, it's time to let you all go. There won't be a homework assignment this time, to let you all focus on studying for your other exams, but I'd like you to consider how Divination could apply to your life. Just out of curiosity, and you don't have to focus on bibliomancy," she continued, sitting down again as she waited for the reaction to that announcement. "And I hope you all have an amazing summer," she added, a bit of a rueful smile on her face before it vanished and her usual friendly expression was back. She'd see them all at the end-of-term feast after all.

... and another class was over.

Helena felt kind of sad about it, even though Divination was surely one of her worst subjects. But she liked it anyway. At least the good part was that they had no homework. Hehe.

The girl packed her stuff and stood up, then walked towards the door. "Have a great summer, professor," she said with a smile, then spun around on her tiptoes and walked out of the classroom.

Louisa glared down at her paragraph as the Professor explained their flaws in bibliomancy. And she probably was right. The girl closed the book gently and returned it to the shelf, slung her bag over her shoulder and walked to the door stopping at the Professor's table, "Thank you, Professor. See ya at the feast!" She flashed a grin and walked out.

Yay! Class over! And best of all...no homework! :woot:

But they have to study for their exams. *Frowny face*

Savannah gathered her things and sighed. Another year have come and gone. Years go by so fast! Too fast. Before you know it, Savvy will be taking her O.W.L. exams. "Good bye professor, have a great summer!" said Savannah before walking out the Divination classroom.
