Waiting for her response, Preston looked about the room to see who else was ready. "Who else? Questions?"
He was going to change her brooch into something?
Thank Merlin for that! She was tired of looking at the ugly, and she knew whatever it was going to be transfigured into would not be as ugly as it's original form. Why would her grandmother think she would like that? Pffft. Grandmothers know nothing about gifts.
Destiny waited as Kingsley walked around the room changing everyone's items. Yes, yes, almost her turn..BAM! The butterfly brooch was gone and in it's place was a STUFFED SHEEP TOY! She wanted to pick it up and SQUEEZE it because it was so FLUFFY and cute, but refrained from doing so. She was in class after all. Picking up her quill instead, she took notes on what the item looked like now.
Quote:
What is the item: A stuffed sheep toy.
Size: Fits in both hands perfectly! perfect for SQUEEZING!
Shape: Sheep shaped.
Texture: FLUFFY!
Color: White
Weight: Light?
Defining markings: Has shiny eyes!
Now she needed to change the cute sheep into that ugly brooch again? She hoped she couldn't.
Putting down her quill, she picked up her wand and pointed it at the toy. Reverto. Reverto. She had done this last term, she could do it this term. "Sorry, sheep." Picturing the ugly brooch in her mind, she gave her wand a flourish, "Reverto!" She figured the brooch would be sitting there, infecting it's ugly on everything around, but it was not there! Sighing, she picked up the stuff toy..
..only now it was a stuffed butterfly. Still cuter than the brooch though.

Iris looked up as the professor walked past, smiling a little. She made a note about what he said about remembering to think about the properties of the new item, too.
So, Iris looked at the clock, and thought about what the bracelet looked like to begin with.
Okay... So... Rainbow bracelet. Glass beads; of different sizes.
She put the parchment with the bracelets description in front of her, and the clock in front of it. Thinking deeply on what the clock really was, Iris raised her wand. Making the motions that the professor had made, she said the spell, "Reverto!"
Nothing.
the clock was still shiny. And it was still ticking.
Frowning, Iris concentrated on the appearance of the bracelet, "re-ver-TOE!" She said, sweeping her wand.
Still no changes.
OKAY! Geez, Iris ... Focus ... The clock is about three times the size of your bracelet, and its pewter, instead of glass rainbow beads. THINK GIRL!
"reverto!" She said, flourishing her wand in the same way that the professor did. Slowly, the clock began to shink a little, until it was about the size of the bracelet. Grinning to herself, picked it up for a moment. It was actually quite a pretty clock. BUT, she needed to get her bracelet back to how it should be.
Placing the clock!bracelet back down on the desk, she raised her wand again; this time, focusing on the face of the clock disapearing and the frame of the clock turning into the sting of the bracelet; and the numbers becoming the beads. "reverto!" She repeated, again with the wand movements.
She watched the clock as it slowly turned back to its original form. WOO! It worked! Iris picked up her bracelet and looked at it. Okay... Maybe she'd have to do the spell again. The beads, whilst colourful, were looking like pewter still, not glass...
And it was ticking.
O__O ...
Her bracelet was ticking like a clock.
Iris guessed that she should have remembered the element of sound when she was thinking about the clock changing back into the bracelet. Oops.
Lifting her wand again, Iris focused on the sound of the ticking to turn into the sound of nothing. Because bracelets were only meant to occasionally rattle. "reverto!" She said, concentrating on the change A LOT.
O______________O ...
Why was it still ticking?!
Looking up from the ticking bracelet, Iris rose her hand, "Er... Professor... I've managed to turn the clock back into my bracelet... but I can't get the ticking to dissapear, too... " Merlin, could you imagine if she was stuck with it! At least it's not as bad as the ticking crocodile in Peter Pan. hehehe.
Preston watched the slytherin have difficulty with her item. It was to be expected, of course. "It's alright, keep trying," he said, encouragingly. "It might help to think about the new properties of the item and then think about the difference between the two. Then, you can focus on things like 'getting softer' or 'stretching out' instead of just picturing the old item."
-- "Remember," Professor Kingsley addressed the whole class. "Take note of the specific properties of your new item as well. When you visualize, you should imagine those properties shifting back to your original item."
Selena nodded and she thought about the two. 'This is too big to be my scarf, my scarf was thinner, even when bundled up,' Selena reminded herself. 'Don't forget, the textures are different, this feels soft like silk, yours is made of yarn,' Selena added mentally. She looked at the pillow. The pillow was missing the braids and the tassels her scarf had. "Reverto," Selena said as she pushed the image out of her mind and through her wand. She looked at the pillow. Still... not quite a scarf yet... though it was made out of yarn now... She liked the pillow more though... "Reverto," Selena said again. This time the pillow grew tassels, Selena wrinkled her nose, it might as well be a carpet... Selena pictured the scarf, the pillow. The pillow wasn't warm lie her scarf, the pattern was different. The pillow's striped pattern was vertical, her scarf's pattern was horizontal... Selena said it again. "Reverto," Selena said with a slight flourish of her wand. It had become back her scarf! What a pity, she didn't have a new pillow.
She didn't like all this concentrating, though. But she remembered exactly what the hairtie looked like. Well, duh, of course she did.
She pictured it shrinking, the pendant going away, turning back to black as it did so, one solid stand. "ReverTO!" she said, wand in hand, making sure to emphasize the right syllable...
And nothing happened... Cool... not.
"Professor, can you show me the wand movement again? Just to be sure..." Of course, she didn't expect it to change, really. But just to be safe, she wanted to make sure she was doing it right.
Preston approached the desk and crouched down so that his wand was at her eye level. "It's just a light flourish, like this." Preston made a small swish in the air from the bottom left to the upper right, almost like a check mark in the air.
"Now you try, just the wand movement."

Nodding, Preston tapped the chain, transfiguring it into a length of ribbon.

Selena raised her hand. She hadn't been really good at transfiguring it the first time. She hoped that she could do better on the second try. "Professor, can you transfigure my item again?" Selena asked. Ooh, maybe this time he'll transfigure it into a stuffed dragon! She would definitely mess up on purpose so she could keep the dragon.
:: Ehgad picked up the drumstick. It was funny seeing one just by itself since they usually came in pairs. He thought it looked a bit like a wonky wand and he held his wand next to it to compare the items.
He was getting a bit off task, and seeing others trying roped him back into the job at hand.
"So, drumstick needs to be a broken blue quill." He muttered to himself as he tried to clear his mind and picture the quill. It was blue and ragged. It was spotted with ink stains and bent at the tip. It had a spit in the top most part of the feather.
He went ahead and closed his eyes. He pictured it with a great effort, but was hesitant to try the spell. ::

Smiling slightly at the Professor, Evelyn looked back down to her bracelet which was now...a big long rope. With handles at the ends? What in the world was this?
Lifting up part of it cautiously, just waiting for it to move or tie her to the chair, she let it drop with a small thud on the desk and flinched. Nope. It didn't do anything to her. So it was safe. Sorta. For now at least.
Hmm, so it was...
Long
Heavy

A rope
Thread like?
Rough
Tan-ish cream colored
Well, there was her mental list of what it was. Now, to change this back to her bracelet? So that meant, she had to imagine the rope turning back to silver, harden, shrink, coil, and become engraved with scales. And look like a snake. Well, it was a rope, so it was already halfway like a snake which made it easier.
Closing her eyes for a moment, she tried to imagine all those things happening to the rope, and mumbling the incantation under her breathe. This seriously took a lot more concentration then she had suspected, something that wasn't all that easy for her nowadays. But so far so good.
Picking up her wand, she kept her eyes closed, continuing to imagine the silver bracelet in her mind. With a swish of her wand, and a confident "Reverto", Evelyn took a moment before opening her eyes. Well, it sure looked like a silver snake, that's for sure. Picking it up by what looked to be the tail of it, Evelyn chuckled slightly before wiggling it in front of Destiny's face.
It was definitely her bracelet, except it didn't go back to it's original round bracelet form. It was limp.

Gross. Absolutely disgusting.
With a heavy sigh, she pulled out the earlier parchment and notated the new properties.
Quote:
What is the item: My grandmere's locket. Size: Fits easily into the palm of my hand Shape: The actual locket is heart-shaped. Texture: Smooth and polished, raised where jewels are located. Colour: Polished silver with small white diamond accents Weight: 8 to 9 ounces Defining markings: My grandmother's name "Lydia" engraved into the back.
After Transfigured
What is the item: A small statue of the great Harry Potter...in his stupid glasses... Size: Standard chess-piece size. Shape: Shaped like a wizard with robes and all the little wizard dressings. Texture: Rough, raised, and polished Colour: All white which is laughable. Weight: However much a standard paper-weight would weigh. Defining markings: It looks like Harry Potter...That's defining enough.
Finishing with that, Marilyn picked up her wand again and leveled it on the statue. Her anxiety was a little high due to the state of her locket. So, her hand was shaking a little as "Reverto" was muttered. Nothing happened.
Sighing, she tried taking a deep breath. It did little to steady her nerves as she leveled the wand with the little piece again. This time when she muttered Reverto...it twitched a little and changed from it's pristine white to the polished silver of her locket...but then stopped.
Why was this being so difficult? She cleared her mind and pictured exactly what Lydia Malfoy's locket had looked like, from its heart-shape to the cut of the diamonds littering the surface. After a moment or so, with her eyes still shut, she pointed her wand at the statue and said Reverto for a third time. When she opened her eyes, the locket lay in front of her once again.
Thank Merlin...

Preston smiled. "Yes, I do think you managed it. Well done. It will get easier with time. Part of the difficulty with this task is that I cast the original spell, so it is stronger and you aren't necessarily privy to the intention behind it."

Guess not.
So she just sat slumped back in her seat with her legs pulled into her chair, staring at the thing with a vacant expression. Lost in her own little world.
Preston approached the young Hufflepuff. "Am I boring you? Or is something the matter?" Professor Kingsley tried to combine a certain sense of firmness with a touch of concern.

Another tap, and the girl's necklace had become a belt.

Timothy looked at his former watch now turned into a completely useless doorknob. An interesting ordeal….something that he had not yet faced. But the doorknob looked nice, it still had the symbols upon it, so at least if he couldn’t redo it….it would fit nicely at home….uncle Nath would be a bit disappointed though….
He picked up the wand touched it to the doorknob and closed his eyes tightly…”revirto!” Timothy whipped his wand around and slammed it against the doorknob. When he opened his eyes however….it had stayed very much a doorknob but had now a clocks face upon the handle….ticking away fervently. Yet not a pocket watch.
Preston approached. "I'm glad you want to try again. Practice makes perfect!"
Another tap, and a small rubber chew toy rested on her desk.
Preston nodded. "Make sure you keep good records. Solids notes will help you make sure you remember and understand what you did when you study for your exams."
Another tap, and the girl's necklace had become a belt.
Selena sighed. This thing wasn't soft, furry, or huggable. It was just... ew... Selena looked at the chew toy. It was red of all things. Of all colours, it was red and was that some pink? Selena groaned. Ew. It was disgusting. She couldn't wait to get back her scarf. She studied the rubber chew toy. It was for a dog, for it was in the shape of a bone. She bit her lower lip. 'Study these properties, then then about your warm fuzzy scarf,' Selena thought. "Reverto!" Selena said with a wand flourish. It was now green and silver. Selena sighed. Better than red and pink at least.

Name: Vashti Greenwell
House/Year: Ravenclaw, Second Year
Item: Bouncy ball
Pushing that to the edge of her desk, Vashti pulled out several pieces of parchment then dug in her bag for several seconds, looking for that dratted bouncy ball. It was always trying to get away from her. Finally, she found it and placed it on her desk, laying her wand beside it so that it wouldn't roll (or bounce!) away. And then class started, so she quickly took out her quill and ink bottle, ready to take notes.
But Merlin, she was so slow on note-taking today. Maybe it was her hand's way of protesting all those notes she'd taken in the other classes, particularly Muggle Studies. Well her hand needed to get over it! She had notes to take!
She would have liked to participate in the discussion, but she was busy jotting down what was said during that time (mostly to protest her hand's protest), so she had no time to say anything. And then there were more actual notes to be taken on the board, so she wrote those down, and her hand was cramping slightly by that point, so she paused for a begin writing down the properties of her bouncy ball personal item. But then the professor wanted their attention again so she set her quill down, secretly glad for an excuse to stop writing, and watched his demonstration. Then she quickly finished writing down the properties of her item:
Quote:
What is the item: A bouncy ball
Size: Kinda small...ish?
Shape: Round b/c it's a sphere
Texture: Smooth, rubbery, kinda stretchy
Color: Pinkish-red
Weight: Very light? so it can bounce
Defining markings: A pale whitish-pink stripe all the way around
And finally she was done writing, at least for the moment. She raised her hand so that the professor would know she was ready for him to transfigure her object.

Nodding, Preston tapped the chain, transfiguring it into a length of ribbon.
Preston made his rounds once more, taking note of the various levels of success. "Keep at it! You're all doing quite well. If you've been successful and would like to try again, let me know and I will transfigure your item again."
ooc: we're gonna be on this step for a while to give multiple timezones a chance to play. So, feel free to use multiple posts to be successful and if you HAVE been successful and want to give it another go, lemme know.
Lysandra watched as Professor Preston turned the bottle into a ribbon. She then took her wand out and pointed it at the length of ribbon in front of her and flourishing it.
Reverto! she said, but nothing happened. The ribbon remained as it was. Lysandra just looked at it, somewhat dissapointed, but knowing it wouldnt have worked the first time she tried it. She pointed the tip of her wand back at the ribbon and tried again.
Reverto! she said again, but a little louder and yet again, nothing happened. What am I doing wrong? she asked herself. Maybe I'm flourishing too much. She thought about it again. Or maybe I'm not thinking of the object it was before! she figured out. Once more, she pointed her wand at the ribbon and took a deep breath. She concentrated on the broken bottle she pulled from the box and concentrated on transforming the ribbon back to that item. Reverto! she said, flourishing her wand lightly while continuing to concentrate on the broken ink bottle.
The ribbon shimmered and started to turn black, but the ends turned into broken bottle ends while the middle remained as a ribbon. Then it returned to being a ribbon. Lysandra smiled. Well, it's a start. she thought.

"Ommm yesshir, shorry sir," the boy tried to swallow, nod and speak at the same time. Worked out pretty well. "I'll just leave the others in this pretty little box here. They are for you, by the way, we just made 'em fresh in Charms."
Hopefully he'd accept the gift of cupcakes cuz uh, that was half the homework assignment right there. And who didn't like #cupcakes, right?!

If you can understand what isn't happening, than you may be more able to take a guess at what is."
Preston shifted away from the board and back to his desk. Picking up the box of items again. "We are going to go back to what Miss Ballard said earlier about properties. Take out another sheet of parchment and make sure your personal item is in view. These items will be transfigured today, so this is your last opportunity to select a new item if you are at all concerned about your selection." He shook the box.
"Examine your object. What descriptive words would you use for it? What is its shape? It's feel? Any defining markings or characteristics?"
Preston tapped the side of the board with his wand, a list of possible properties emerged.
"On your parchment, take note of these and any others you think are relevant for your item. Be as descriptive as possible. It will help, later."
Fletcher tapped his quill thoughfully on his parchment and listened to the professor talk. All right so he had to describe his cupcake.... easy.....
Quote:
What is the item: A delicious, fresh, pink-frosted cupcake. Size: Sits nicely on my palm, got a good little height to it with the frosting. Shape: Round bottom, angles up into a little frosted pink peak. Texture: 100% pure deliciousness. Er, delicate? Color: Dark chocolate, light blue wrapper, and bright pink frosting. Weight: uh, light? Defining markings: It's the only cupcake in the room, yo.

"Those of you who are still writing, you'll have more time, but I could use everyone's attention." Preston reached into the box, extracting a child's dog toy. Placing it on the desk, he unholstered his wand.
"We're going to learn two spells today. Or, rather, we'll learn another use for a spell that returning students already know, and then a new spell. But the first is important so that you can fix any mistakes you make."
"Untransfiguration reverts a transfigured item back to its previous form. Last term, students learned the Reverto, pronounced re-VER-toe, would revert an item to a previous natural state - like a butterfly to a caterpillar. The SAME incantation, with a slightly different emphasis, will undo a transfiguration. Like so."
Preston tapped the toy, transfiguring it into a vase, decorated with the images of little dogs. "Pronounce the incantation, re-ver-TOE, with a light flourish of your wand, concentration on the form you want the item to return to."
"Reverto!" Preston flourished his wand, and the vase shrunk back down and into a child's toy.
"Now, it's much easier to revert something you transfigured in the first place, so we're going to give you some practice reverting things you didn't. That is why I've asked you to bring a personal item. I will be transfiguring your items into something else. I want you to take note of the new properties of the item. Even without knowing what spell I used, you should be able to think about what kind of changes occurred. Take careful notes of those properties and then picture in your mind the item changing back, focusing on each specific property. Concentrate on that image."
Preston picked up the box again, just in case some wanted to change their item. "I don't expect the younger students to be successful immediately. The strength of the original spell has a lot to do with how easy untransfiguration is. Keep at it. Don't be surprised if you get it part of the way but not entirely. Older students, fifth year and above, this should be easier for you, so I would like you to try the spell nonverbally. The concentration for that, coupled with the concentration should provide more of a challenge."
Preston tucked the box under his arm. "I'm going to come around and transfigure your items once you are done with your initial notes. If you would like to pick a new item because your item is too personal or valuable, please do."
----
Waiting for her response, Preston looked about the room to see who else was ready. "Who else? Questions?"
Once he had the description of his beautiful cupcake all written down, Fletcher calmly raised his hand and waited for the professor to come transfigure it. Mmmm mmmm the poor cupcake, getting transfigured and all. Good thing he still had a half-dozen fresh ones that wouldn't suffer the same fate sitting in that box to the side....[/color]

Sky looked down on the dog-collar, concentrating on its previous state. I mean, it couldn't be that hard, could it?
With the image in her mind, she pointed her wand at the collar.
"Re-ver-TOE!"
Sky opened her eyes, and, frustratingly enough, the only thing that apperaed was the silver charm, now clinging to the red leather of the collar. Oh, great, she thought. Okay. One more go!
"RE-VER-TOE!"
Sky opened one eye warily, and was releived to see her bracelet. But where the flippin' fudge was the charm?

Nodding as the professor said this, Iris smiled; feeling really proud of herself... It was probably the first time that she'd ever fully accomplished something in Transfiguration. As Professor Kingsley said this, Iris wondered if by 'the intentions behind the objects' were intentional. Did he, like, make their belongings into certain objects for a reason? There was a lot of students, though... He couldn't possibly have managed to have come up with something particular for all of them. "Yeah, that makes sense. Thanks, Professor Kingsley."
Quickling picking up her quill, Iris made a few more notes about the whole concentration thing; just incase she'd need them later on.

Arya was pulled from her thoughts when the professor spoke to her. Sitting up straighter, she moved her legs out of the chair and looked at Kingsley, eyes narrowing slightly in confussion before she shook her head. "No sir, its just...." I have a lot on my mind? "I can't seem to focus, that's all. Not bored." She averted her eyes to the frisbee on the desk, picking it up with her free hand. "Its a little harder than I thought it would be. Changing it back."
