What did he know about the history of magic... not much, he was afraid. But if this professor was like some of the others, he might get house points for trying?
Raising his hand, he offered, timidly, "Well, I didn't know much of anything about wizard history until I bought my books, but it seems to me that its full of events that either muggles knew nothing about or had other explanations for."
Tibi bit his lip and hoped his answer was ok. | "Precisely. Precisely." Ethan tapped the board with his wand and notes began to appear. "Events that muggles knew nothing about or had other explanations for. And do you know the reason for that?" Quote:

"Oh, all right," Ella grinned, then took a cushion and sat herself down. She favorited this class from the beginning. The teacher didn't resent her yet! Then again, she didn't do her normal prodding around yet, either. Don't get distracted, don't get distracted... her brain chanted. She gave the teacher a smile. "Do you like chocolate?" she inquired. | "I do indeed. As long as it is not in pie form. Do you know who else likes chocolate?" Ethan lowered his voice to a whisper, "Professor Bunbury. Save your chocolate and give it to her alright? Meanwhile, I'll try to keep the class relatively painless."
And then he hummed a bit, the same tune that Emalyn had been humming at the beginning of the class. Quote:

Putting his hand up he replied,"Well professor, one thing I've learned is that what can start out as something one thinks is something nice, such as House elf rights can turn into a bitter argument with no one winning." he paused, his eyes taking on that look of which he was about to go on a ramble. "Arguments and long boring speeches are a part of our history, and so are the bitter disputes which can turn ugly rather quickly, for both wizards and muggles alike." he finished, not wanting to go on like he normal did. In fact he had completely forgotten about anything to do with history since the summer break and knew his answer wasn't the best. | "Arguements. Disputes... and boring speeches. Indeed." Ethan nodded in agreement. "What do you suppose is the source of such disputes, William?" Quote:

He couldn't understand his warning but who cared? He was never fond of visiting professors anyway, he could easily stay out of his way too.
He quickly decided to think on the question. History of Magic was about... history of magic? He thought it was quite obvious, but then again the professor probably meant something else. He nervously raised his hand. "It talks about history, and what it took for wizards to... come at this point?" He lowered his hand looking embarrassed... Never mind him. | "Literal but correct. It is important to be able to look back on your path and see it clearly in order to be prepared to continue on." Ethan nodded. Quote:

She remembered her mother talking about it before she went to sleep one night. | "Indeed they do. I spent my summer in Egypt working with some cursebreakers and wizarding archaeologists. Though we weren't looking for your typical treasure, at least not gold and jewels. Knowledge was what we were after." Truebridge appreciated the answer the girl gave. Quote:

Heh.
"We can indeed learn things such as that." Quote:

He knew her name? Well, that was a first, as far as she knew. It wasn't like she spoke up much in class but, perhaps, Professor Truebridge was just that good.
And now he wanted the class to tell him about History of Magic. Should she say the most obvious? 'It's about the history of magic.' No, it would probably be best to say something that wasn't common sense.
Whit listened to the other student's answers and then came up with something. Raising her hand, she said,"History of Magic introduces you to the famous and not so famous wizards throughout the ages?" | "Quite right. Just like the ones that appear on the chocolate frog cards. We can gain inspiration from some of those famous witches and wizards, and a warning or a lesson from others." Quote:

Very good Herminnny. It is as important to know the history of a place as it is to know the history of the people." Quote:

Thank you." Truebridge nodded. Quote:

Lazeh indeed.
After listening to Truebridge opening up the lesson, Jake placed his elbows on the knees of his crossed legs and held his head in his hands, frowning in concentration. Did he mean literally magic through the ages, as in events? Or what history was about. Jake decided to go with... ages. Yup.
"Well... if you want something about events..." Jake started, though everyone else was talking about something different. Meh. He wasn't everyone else. He was Jake. HUZZAH! "I think it was the... fourteenth century or the fifteenth, muggles used to burn witches. They called the guys witches too. Anyway, they weren't too clever at finding the magical folk, because, well... we can use magic to disguise ourselves. And when they caught the real ones and burnt them at the stake, there was charm that would make it so the fire wouldn't burn. One crazy nutter kept letting himself get caught because... I dunno, he liked it," Jake quit his rambling and rested his chin in his hands again.
Nutter indeed. | "Indeed." Ethan answered shortly. Lazeh.
"We will actually come back to precisely what you are talking about here, Jake. That would be Wendelin the Weird and the flame-freezing charm." Quote:

"The Law of Animagi, where you must be registered become an Animagus before performing the change or you will be performing illegal magic." |
"Laws in general are a very very important aspect of our history, and this is another part of what we will talk about today." Truebridge answered. Quote:

This time she couldn't hold back her laughter, and after a few seconds, controlled herself. "Sorry." she mumbled. | Truebridge winked at the first year, not minding at all. Quote:

Emalyn raised her hand and cleared her throat. "I know a bit about goblin rights in the ministry and stuff...like that they shouldn't be considered creatures, but more like humans...or something...or was that the giants? No, it was goblins..." Ooookay, maybe she should have kept her mouth shut. Maybe she should have just said that history was educational obviously and left it at that. Meh, oh well. What was said was said. That's why she was there, right? To learn about History of Magic! | "The rights of magical creatures and of magical beings are indeed intertwined with our own history. Particularly when, as William mentioned, things turned bitter. It's a touchy topic deciding who has the right to decide what. "
Ethan pushed off the wall and stood up straight.
"We live in a world apart. To use a metaphor, muggles and wizardkind are seperated by a two way mirror. We can see out but when they look back, they only see a reflection of themselves. Sometimes however, cracks appear in that mirror and a muggle catches a glimpse of what is on our side. Following this metaphor, what serves as the mirror? What is it that ensures we keep our world and our magic hidden?" |
