| | | Herbology Lesson Three: Planting Puffas/Fluttas Today's lesson was not in the greenhouses like ordinarily - no, today was extraordinary. Extraordinary weather, nice and warm, called for a special lesson.
Anastasia Bunbury was seated barefoot in the student garden, chillaxing on the grass in a very very verrrry old pair of blue jeans and surrounded by puffapods in pots. This was the southwest corner of the garden where not-so-many plants were located...instead, there seemed to be long two furrows of earth flanking a pathway. Clearly it had been turned up for planting something.
"Come and have a seat! Let's chilllllll for a lil bitttt," your professor greets you with a loopy smile. "Sit sit." |

Freya said as her stylist had finished and went back to pruning her plant...which is what they should have been doing all along. She reached up and ruffled her hair, getting any loose strands out and still not used to the strange sensation she now had whenever Freya had the urge to sweep her once longhair behind her shoulders.
She had Anchor perch on her arm and went back over to her plant. The owl gave his master an odd look, almost as though he didn't recognize her. "Oh stop. It's me...". Freya tapped Anchor on the beak and he poofed his feathers up, finally recognizing his owner.
Freya took her wand up again and finally made to finish her pruning on her plant. 'So weird! My hair isn't blowing in my face!' |

She didn't exactly know what a karate chop was, but Mariel watched Ashby quick flick of his wrist as he demonstrated the wand movement and she nodded. That looked easy enough, if she could just remember that incantation without her tongue tripping over it. "Flippyschnipwiznit," she started, then shook her head. She knew it was Flipnsnipwitit and could say it all good and stuff in her head, but it came out of her mouth all weird. Taking a deep breath, she concentrated and tried again. "Flipnsnip...witit." That was a little better.
Looking at her flutterby bush appraisingly, the second year made a chopping movement with her wand as she said, "Flipnsnipwitit." Grinning at the fact that she did the spell correctly as her wand made the correct buzzing sound, she cut away at some of the dead branches and obvious overgrowth, repeating the spell as necessary.
Sitting back slightly to view her work once she determined herself finished, Mariel's head snapped up as she heard Freya volunteer to have her hair sheared off. The girl was much braver that she was, there was no way the Ravenclaw would let a girl her age have a go at her hair, a thought which made Mariel subconciously stroke her own hair. Eyes wide and hand covering her mouth, Mariel watched as Freya let the younger girl practice the pruning charm on her long locks. It ended up much shorter than Mariel would ever have her hair, but she had to admit that the other Ravenclaw girl did a good job as Freya looked quite stylish.
Grinning, she gave the Ravenclaw girl a thumbs-up with her right hand to tell her well done with the charm and gave Freya a thumbs-up with her left hand to let her know her new haircut looked great. The she looked at the two professors present to see what would happen next in class.

She gasped when she watched the way the wand was supposed to move and act. It was...sort of dangerous...she could end up cutting the plant in half, right?
Well, knowing her...she could...but she wasn't going to. 'Flipinskinit' right? No, that wasn't it.
Kaika sighed and decided to give it a go with the charm first, "Flipinskinit!" she said, and made the correct wand movement, or at least the one she'd seen Prof. Ashby do...but nothing happened. Sigh again. And she gave it another try. Pffffffft.
So, what was the other way to prune a flutterby?

Miles wand began to act like a razor snippy scissors and he grinned wildly a his plant. He wouldn't go mad, he would try not to anyway, and would just begin to chop dead leaves off.
As his wand buzzed, he snipped one or two withered, ewwy coloured leaves. "Yey! You look all pwetty now." He smiled at his Flutterby. |

| The REAL Sorting Hat: "Ravenclaw!" This monkey is bananas. William looked down at his Flutterby bush and frowned. It sure did need some trimming he mused as he kept chanting the incantation in his mind. He looked around at the others and saw how much work they've done so far and frowned. Where was his head today? First he had walked into a wall, then he had tripped and gotten into the fight that wasn't really a fight but more of a thingymabobber.
Pointing his wand at his bush he said "Flipinskinit" as he chopped his wand the way the professor had shown him. It vibrated to life, turning into the instrument he needed and carefully pruned a twig from the bush that was sticking out. Luckily the bush didn't jump out of his lap, which meant he had done it right. Smiling a bit he continued to prune, giving the bush a loving hug every time he took off a twig or leafs.
He began humming without realizing it, the song that the Slytherin boy had sung ow stuck in his mind as he continued trimming happily away. His face still stung a bit where the cut was now healing - luckily for him he was a fast healer, something that had helped him when he was younger. His wand, still in the super-crazy-scissor-razor mode hummed along with him, vibrating wildly in his hand as he snipped off a particularity ugly yellow leaf. Satisfied that all was good, he stopped the spell and looked down at his neatly trimmed bush, a smile on his face as he hugged it again.

Bunbury-Foster Slytherin Fifth Year | Professor Pink | Mrs. Bruce Wayne | I'm on a Goat | Glitterpuff | Dumbledore's Defense Squad | BHB Anastasia beamed around at all the students pruning away, giggling at Willyboy in particular. "I don't know how you got that spell to work, dear, since it is flipnsnipwitit and not flipinskinit." She giggled some more and winked at him, wondering if perhaps the pronunciation wasn't nearly as important as the karate-chop action... but whatevs. It was time to move on.
"Now then, once your flutterby has had an appropriate haircut," yep she liked Clifford's terminology, "it's time to plant it in the ground. As you can see, I've already turned up some earth in two nice long rows where we're going to be planting the puffapods and flutterbys."
The redhead gestured towrard the furrows with a nice big central walkway down them. "I've got some shovels here," she pointed just behind the cart which had had flutterbys on it, "and you guys should know the instructions, right? It's pretty similar to how we potted the puffas...."
Annie skipped over to the dirt path between the furrows and started writing in the dirt with her wand. "In case you forgot, I made up some directions for transplanting the puffas and the fluttas from their pots and into the earth...should be easy nuff."
She beamed around at them all and clapped her hands. "Any questions before we begin? Oh, and be careful please. We want to space them like two or three feet apart and alternate the pretty pink puffas with the purpley, bushy fluttas. Ya'll can do that, right?" Quote:

9) WATER the PLANT.

Kayla raised her hand, "Uh Professor Bunbury, does the flutterby bush require any special fertilizer? Does it need a different fertilizer from the puffapod?" She didn't want to ruin either plant by putting something wrong into the mix.

"Nope, Kayla, but thanks for asking. They're both pretty awesome just the way they are." She grinned and started doodling in the dirt with her wand some more.
"Oh, but I did forget to mention something - flutterby bushes, since you noticed they're rather friendly and move a lot, form emotional attachments easily. So if you're nice to yours and take good care of it and plant it well, it might be loyal to you and expect you to come visit it lots."
She eyed the other students shiftily, like that was a hint. "So maybe you could think of it as a planty pet? Teehee."

Chris began the first couple of steps.
He grabbed a shovel from were Bunbury had gestured and dug a deep hole and plced the pot and Flutterby bushh in it to see if it was deep enough. No. It neede to be about two or three inches deeper. So Chris took out the potted bush and dug for another minute or so and repeated his test for the deepness of the hole. It was about right now.
So he pulled out his wand and said, "Aguamenti." A clear flow of water poured from the tip of his wand and into the freshly tilled soil. He stopped shortly afterwards so it wouldn't get too muddy.
He then pulled the Flutterby bush gently out of the pot and made sure all the roots were out. 'looks about right to me.' he thought to himself. "Professor Bunbury, am i doing this right so far?" he asked her excitedly

| Made of Awesome | Ern-la the Best-wa | TZ's Apogee Ah, this part he was good at. Copernicus had finished trimming his little flutta... was that what she was calling it? Anyway, it was looking awfully spiffy now, and he made sure to tell the little plant just how very attractive it was looking as he shifted the pots to where he planned on digging.
Apparently, the flutterby liked being told how pretty it was, because the purpley flowers waved madly in the air as he dug a hole for it in the long trough the professor had provided. Oh, but maybe his puffapod was getting jealous! He reached across and pulled the second pot closer to give that plant a pep talk too.

Having just given her flutterby a "haircut," Anna looked up and listened to the professor as she detailed the next set of instructions. So it was now time to plant her little flutterby in the ground. Ohhh, exciting! Anna turned to look at the two rows they'd be planting puffapods and flutterbys in. It was a pretty little area, and Anna was excited at the chance to see all the pretty plants grow into their full potential. Once she'd received a shovel, Anna headed over to the area she was to plant in and got right to work.
Anna jammed her shovel into the ground and began to dig, making sure her hole was big enough to sit the pot in. Oh, and she had to make sure she dug it to where the top soil would be level with the ground. When she'd determined that she'd done just that, Anna moved on to step two. Whew. This was going to take a while. Grabbing her wand and casting Aguamenti, Anna watered the ground, being craeful to not make it muddy. Studying her pot and determing that it was indeed pliable, flexible material, Anna massaged the pot until she felt the roots loosen. Okay, now for step four, the step Anna was a bit nervous about. She didn't want to break the roots or anything like that! Sighing, Anna grasped ahold of her plant at the base of its stem and carefully removed it from the pot, roots and all. Oh, oh, oh! She'd done it correctly! Awesomeness!
Alright, so now it was time to put the little plant into the ground! Anna watched as she put the plant into the ground. She was supposed to check and make sure the roots had enough room. The plant didn't look like it was going to sink either! Eep! Success was on the horizon! Once again, Anna massaged, this time massaging the roots to make them loosen and spread out a bit more. When she'd done that, Anna picked up her shovel and filled in all the little spaces. Alright, time for a bit more H20! Casting Aguamenti once again, Anna gave her plant a nice little drink of water. With that, the flutterby was planted. One down...puffapod to go.

Chris then put the plant gently into the hole and mde sure it didnt sink. It didn't. Good.
So he lifted it back out and massaged the roots and loosened the soil surrounding the roots. He pulled lightly here and there making sure they came loose but not ripping or tearing them off. He made sure the soil was patted up like a moat and then made a ring around it for the water.
He then pulled his wand back out and said the incantaion. "Aguamenti." he watered the plant til it looked satisfactory. Now he was doen with the Flutterby Bush and needed to move on to his puffapod plant.
He then placed it back gently into the hole he had dug. Looking over at the directions Bunbury had given them he saw that he now needed to fill in the hole. So he put on his gloves and pushed some of the dirt he had shoveld out, gently into the hole around the plant. He then patted it lightly not to make it solid around the plant but firm enough that it wouldn't fall or be ripped up.

Ana started digging a deep hole in the soil, a really deep hole
Nooooowwww water! "Aguamenti" and a small flow of water came out of her wand. In a few seconds she stopped so it doesn't became mud.
Next massage the pot. She felt the roots loosen. And now the most delicate part. Her hands already shook a lot but it seems that when she most need them to stop it becomes worst. She CAREFULLY gripping the plant at the base of the stem with ALL the roots and moving like a turtle she turn to the pot and set the plant in the hole. Luckily it didn't sink.
And massage. Lucky plants I want a massage too With one hand in the plant she massage the roots with the other hand.
Then Ana picked up her shovel and filled in all the empty spaces in the pot.
Ana pat the dirt up and make a ring so the water can seep in.
Last step! Water! Water... water, beach... she could hear and smell the beach... back to work "Aguament" again the water flow hit the soil. "YEAH! I'm done! I'm done!... at least for the flutterby..." |

Dropping his shovel, Clifford then moved to Fluttery who was waving her leaves around crazily. Ooooh, looked like someone was excited about moving into their new home. YAY! The sixth year then massaged the pot till he was sure the roots were all nice and loosened so that he could get Fluttery outta there.
"You ready?" He asked the bush, giving her flailing leaves an ickle nuzzle. "This won't hurt a bit." Wrapping his fingers carefully but firlmy around the bottom of the stem, Clifford then pulled Fluttery out of her pot and plopped her in the hole he'd dug.

3) If the pot you have is made out of pliable, flexible material, massage the pot so the roots get loosened a bit. [This will apply only to the cheap-o flutterby pots.]
4) Carefully, gripping the plant at the base of its stem, remove the plant from its pot. MAKE SURE YOU GET ALL ITS ROOTS!
5) Gently set it inside the hole in the ground, guesstimating to make sure there's enough room for the roots. Make sure it doesn't sink (otherwise you'll need to add more dirt to the hole before you plant it).
6) Retaining a hold on the plant being transplanted, massage its roots some more until they are loose and spread out in the hole you made. Don't rip or tear at the roots though; gentle is thee word.
7) Use your shovel (or your hands, mouth, neighbor's shoe, whatever) to gently fill in the space over the roots/around the base of the plant with the soil you displaced when you first dug the hole.
8) Pat the dirt up around the base of the plant and then make a ring, like a moat, so it has space for the water to seep in. And remember, you don't want any exposed roots.
9) WATER the PLANT.
10) Repeat steps 1-9 with your puffapod, preferably planting it right next to your own flutterby bush. Remember to space them 2-3 feet apart!
Miles excitedly dug a hole with the shovel he had picked up, and made sure it was deep enough. He carefully placed the pot in the whole. Miles then watered the soil all giddy like.
He skipped back over to his plant and gently gripped it and it's root, then skipped to his holein the ground and patted into it. Lovely. He wanted his Flutterby to look beautiful, better than the rest. He massaged the roots, as if he was giving Vannie a shoulder massage.
Instead of using his shovel, he used his hand to pat the soil again to make sure the hole was closed and the plant was neatly in the ground. With his index finger, he made the moat-like ring around the plant, and then watered it again.
"Hehehehe." Miles giggled like a girl and went to go get his puffapod and do the steps ALL OVER AGAIN. Bleh. |

"Can I have another one please? I'm sorry." he said, his head drooping slightly. He wasn't about to be honest and say he hadn't really been paying attention, oh no he was not.

| connoisseur of comfort ❅ Crayola's Wibby Mrs Alex Turner ❅ Netflix and meow What was next? Scratching his head, clearly deep in thought, Clifford looked down at Fluttery in her new home. Hmmm.
OOH OOH! Kneeling back down, not caring about getting muddy trousers, the sixth year gently started massaging Futtery's roots, making sure that they were all seperate and spread out nicely in their new home. Fluttery gave her leaves another flail.. she clearly liked her new home. Hehehe!
Still on his knees, Clifford then used his hands to fill the hole he'd dug right back up until Fluttery was just like a bug all snug in a rug. WHEEEE!! She had to be all niiice and warn in there.
Making sure the soil was patted down all nice, his hands niiiice and muddy, Clifford used his finger to draw a ring around Fluttery's stem. Satisfied that he'd done it right, he whipped out his wand once again muttering the watery charm and making sure Fluttery got a nice drink.
EEEE!!!!!1 Now he had to do AAALL that again but with Puffy!

She moved over to the furrow, shovel in hand and started to dig a bit to adjust the depth to fit her flutterby pot. She checked it was right by putting the pot in there before taking it out and watering, just enough to moisten without muuddying. She massaged the felxible pot and giggled as the flutterby tickled her face in return. Once she was sure that the roots had been massaged loose, Cela checked the instructions again and gripped the flutterby at the base and slowly and carefully drew it out of its pot, crooning to it all the while.
She had guesstimated pretty darn well, and when she placed it in the hole it turned out that she didn't need to raise the soil level at all. Cela began to massage the roots loose being gentle and especially careful of the rootball. Once she was satisfied with that, Cela kept a grip on the plant and began to push the displaced soil back in the hole with her hands. When it was half full and she could let go of the plant, she continued refilling it with the shovel.
She patted the soil up, checked the roots weren't exposed and made a little moat with her fingers. Cela put her shovel aside and picked up a watering can and watered the flutterby.
Nowwww for the puffapod plant. Cela began the process again, about 2 and a half feet away from her flutterby, this time she had to be a little more careful with the roots and freeing it from the terra cotta pot. She hummed happily and stopped to give the flower a nuzzle as she massaged its roots free before sticking it in the hole she had made. Patting up the dirt, Cela made another little moat and watered the puffapod flower too.
All done, Cela sat herself down between the two plants, occassionally reaching out both hands to gently touch them.

Abby reads the directions carefully. She goes over and gets a flutterby plant and takes it where she plans to plant it. She finds a shovel and digs a hole. Abby then levitates the pot into the hole to make sure the hole is deep enough. The pot can fit the hole, but it does not sit equal to the ground. Abby removes the pot and digs the hole a little deeper. She repeats the above process. The pot fits perfectly. Abby performs the Aguamenti spell. A stream of water flows from her wand. She waters the soil according to the directions. Abby grabs the plant by its base and gently removes the flutterby from the pot. She lays the plant on the ground and then levitates it into the hole. The flutterby seems to sit properly, so the hole should not need anymore soil. Abby gets down on her knees and grabs the plant by its base. She then gently seperates the roots making sure they are spread out in the hole. Abby stands up. She dumps the remainder of the soil from the pot over the plant. She then shovels the remainder of the soil from digging the hole over the plant. Abby stands up and pats the soil down with her feet. She then kneels back down and digs a trench around the plant with her hands. Abby gets her wand and using the aguamenti charm, she fills the trench with water.
Abby gets up and walks off two feet from the flutterby plant. She then goes and gets her Puffapod plant. Abby digs a whole and places the pot in it. The pot fits the hole perfectly. She then waters the hole. Abby then gently removes the puffapod from the plant. She places it in the hole, and seperates the roots. Abby then fills the hole in with dirt. She uses her hands to pat the soil down. Abby then digs a trench around the hole, and waters it. When she finished, Abby takes the pots and shovel back to the shed. |
