| | | Class 3: ADVANCED FEAR
As you enter the DADA classroom, the first thing you might notice is a marked change in the decor. The room is bright and the walls and desks have been charmed to be pink, of all things! Instead of the usual grim and gruesome moving photos on the walls there are large moving posters of frolicking baby animals: unicorns, kneazles, baby ducks and dragons, and on Kazimeriz's chalkboard, a giant poster of a cruppy that keeps grinning and romping about. Balloons and streamers hang from the ceiling; the balloons charmed to glow and light the room in the same way that the flickering candle sconces usually do.
The air is warm and fragrant with smells of baking cookies (just like grandmom's house elf used to make!), rich, sweet cocoa and hints of butterbeer. There is a victrola in the corner playing the song, " My Favourite Things".
Occasionally, the cruppy on the chalkboard romps out of the frameview long enough for you to read the message left by the Professor:
ooc: Please take a seat and feel free to talk a little - not to excess, please! Class will start tomorrow morning and run for about 24 hours or so. Xana~
PS: Don't forget to get your DADA 2 homework in (especially your drawings) and catch some pogrebin! |

It had been her fault they had nearly died! She felt more than just the lethifold pressing down on her. She could still see her hands, fists clenched and pressed painfully against the ground as she leaned on them. She blinked away some of the tears obstructing her vision and looked at her wand. Her wand! She still had her wand! Her fingers were so numb and she was so entrenched in the memory, she had almost forgotten. Lifting her eyes up to stare unseeingly around at the other students, Cela searched desperately for a good memory. She had found one before! What was it? Where was it?
Her fingers tingled again, almost the same sensation as... her happy memory suddenly embraced her again and though the tears weres still falling silently, Cela pushed herself to her feet.
There! There it was! She was flying on the back of her abraxan right alongside Copernicus on his while Professor Morgan watched with an expression of delight mixed with pride. Her fingers tingled again, reminiscent of the wind rushing through them and the joy bubbled up inside her stronger than ever before, "Expecto Patronum!" The wand movement was subtle and instinctive and the scorpion that rushed from the tip of her ebony wand was so clear and bright it almost looked like it would sting someone for real. Oh, no. No, no, no. Seymour fretted anxiously as lethifolds were released on one side of the classroom, stealthily smothering people in their horrible, ink-like clutches. He shuddered involuntarily. Will probably dealt with these fiends on a daily basis! In fact, he had probably already domesticated lethifolds for unsuspected attacks against vile overlords. Surely just repelling them wouldn't be that hard... even Anna had done it, for Merlin's sake!
He eyed the line splitting the classroom nervously. There were plenty of happy memories in his past, right? And while he had extraordinary focus, he -- OH NOES! His eyes widened hugely as a great, big, sooty shadow enveloped Celandine, beginning to... to... strangle her. Never! He'd battle the thing to the death first! What would Will say if she was killed by asphyxiation within his VERY SIGHT?! Surely he'd disown him as his squire AND friend! "I'LL SAVE YOU, FAIR LADY!" Drawing his wand, he summoned all his courage and charged across the line, launching himself at Cela as she stood back up. He tried to think on his feet, envisioning happy memories. Filling out his first character sheet with Emmett. Finding out he was really a wizard. Being deemed worthy of being a real knight by Will on the train-- yes! That was the one! He focused on the details of the memory; the rumbling of the train, the red sparks that came from Will's wand... and his voice, officially knighting him. If that wasn't happy, he didn't know what was. He furrowed his eyebrows and pointed his wand at the lethifold, ignoring Cela's little silver scorpion."E-expecto patronum!" he squeaked nervously. Nothing. " Ex-pek-to patronuuum!" He closed his eyes, too afraid to look, and hoped for the best... because what else could you really do?

He sighed and crossed the line, his wand drawn. Hopefully he wouldn't get attacked right off. To the left side of Copernicus a lethifold was slowly starting to stand erect, preparing for a strike. A cold sort of moisture saturating the air around Copernicus, almost suffocating, like humidity, but indeed colder.

The lethifold held still as nothing errupted from Seymours quiet, but indeed forceful attempt at a patronus. Was this boy going to move? Or attempt to harm the lethifold?
Again, the creature was greeted with nothing. It was as if the boy was throwing himself upon the altar to be eaten for dinner by the lethifolds. The lethifold wasted no more time and took advantage of the position the boy was holding. The wind-up, then the pitch. BOING! The creature sprung onto Seymours head trying to close off his nostrils and mouth and wrapping him up like a very tightly wound turban. Quote:

| ♥Dunkin | Pixie's Precious Pea | kpop goddess | sneaky sounder | forever slytherin♥ Freed from the lethifold by his shiny bunny, Raiden laid still on the floor for a moment, staring at the ceiling and gasping for breath. He'd thought that the boggart was bad, but this... at least the boggart hadn't killed him. Coughing as he sat up, he caught sight of the shining bunny as it seemed to glare at the shadows into which the lethifold had retreated. Satisfied that the creature wasn't going to come back, the bunny hopped back to Raiden and bounced in place, nose twitching. Raiden smiled at the non-creature as he clambered back to his feet.
Right... move to the other side of the safe line. He waved to the bunny as it started to fade and moved towards the safe zone. As he reached the line, he looked back at the students waiting to be attacked and gasped as one of them wrapped itself around Celandine Toussaint.
"Oooh," he gasped, his stomach turning anxiously. He almost, ALMOST gave in to the urge to help her... but the realization that she didn't need any help hit him just before he did anything. Cela was capable of protecting herself, as evidenced by the scorpion that had just blasted out of her wand. Still... he hovered near the line, slightly too paranoid to leave his friends completely alone. |

When that moment arose, the hungry creature flung its entire body upon the boy. A semi-wet, very cold grip was fixated around Copernicus' chest as the lethifold attempted to asphyxiate. He felt the movement before he saw it, and it was only through long-rehearsed reflexes that Copernicus was able to get his wand up in time. Unfortunately, the creature was wrapped around his chest and working its way up to his face, and his wand was pinned between his body and the lethifold. How exactly was he supposed to cast the Patronus at this angle?
And really how was he supposed to think of a happy memory when the lethifold was suffocating him? His face was uncovered, but the creature was wrapped so tightly around his chest that Cope couldn't expand his chest cavity enough to breathe. He gasped desperately, but it was no good. Best come up with a happy memory, and in a hurry. He gathered the memory of having a brother, and good friends who made him laugh, and star-gazing. With a jab right into the beast ('cause really, where else could that wand go?), Cope managed to gasp, "Expecto Patronum." A pale silver owl erupted from his wand at the same time Cope tipped over backwards.

It slithered up the thread of a glowy balloon and waited on the top of it, hoping to pass for a shadow. 'Stupid thing...' The eighteen year old thought to herself quite angrily, 'Stupid emotions...always doing me wrong. No! Happy thoughts...think happy thoughts...'. And she started to remember the good days again, her wand was held in her right hand, ready to cast whatever spell the girl desired with a simple flick of the wrist. The large, dark lethifold that had been stalking Freya slowly began to stir as it came down from it's corner at the front of the class. In a quieter setting, this massive lethifold might've been able to have been detected for it's weight pressed hard against the surface of the DADA floor. With its back to the wall, the lethifold coiled, and using the wall, projected itself with a substantial amount of force onto Freya popping one of the glowing balloons as it did so and dimming the room. It attached itself to her torso and neck, and began to SQUEEZE. Quote:

One thought dominated his mind: Were the lethifolds attacking at random? Or were they saving him for a special moment? The living shroud snuck slowly, gazing back with eyeless eyes that pierced the darkness into his very soul. Waiting to strike, merging into the shadows, as unseeable as the air itself, but carrying the weight of the world's evils upon its shadowy shoulders. It saw the prince-- an easy target, his eyes shut as though using The Force to sense its whereabouts. Not like the others, who were aware... this one was a lamb ready for slaughter.
Now was the time. It was hungry for something... something special.
The lethifold struck, silent and swift as a mamba, slithering up the boy and encasing his head in its death-grip. His air passages enrobed. Smothering.

Retracting slightly, it pounced and coiled around Elizabeths ribcage, squeezing upon the exhale. As soon as she started feeling a little better, Elizabeth tilted her head slightly to one side as she thought she heard something behind her. But before she was able to turn, her breath came rushing out of her as it felt like a vise was around her midsection. She tried to take in a breath, but as soon as she tried to get a sufficient amount of oxygen into her lungs, it felt like her ribs were about to break. So, resorting to taking shallow breaths, almost like she was hyperventilating before free diving to expand her lung capacity, she glanced down to see blackness.
Squeezing her eyes shut, she narrowly avoided actually hyperventilating as she realized she was seconds away from dying, if she couldn't focus. Taking a split-second to concentrate, she waited until one of her favorite songs from Rent started playing in her head, and once she visualized seeing it being sung on stage, she swiveled her hand around to point her wand at the lethifold trying to puncture her lungs the hard way, or whatever it was doing. Barely moving her wand in the curly shape necessary, she used what little oxygen she had in her system to say "Expecto Patronum!" As she felt the energy escape through her wand, she opened her eyes to see her eagle circling her tightly, trying to get between her and the constricting mini-blanket of the lethifold.

The owl spread it's wings, its wingspan looking three times the size due to the effulgence it was giving off. It flapped furiously, and kicked its talons out towards the lethifold, occassionally getting a punch as well as a right good clawing in. The lethifold finally gave up, quite wounded and still very hungry. Quote:

Then Herminny suddenly noticed a lethifold coming right for her head and thought thank goodness I finally came up with a memory that works quite well and she thought of her mother telling her of her abilities and how hard it was for her and rcited the incantation once more, "expectopotrolum", and that same feirce eagle patronus came out of her wand and she aimed it right at the lethifold knowing the power of her potronus could likely tear the lethifold to peices. The lethifold shrank back, dissolving back into the shadows and slinking back into the sanctity of the trunk. It was defeated. Quote:

The lethifold squirmed and tugged, trying to smother and dissolve the girl before the patronus could overpower it. Alas, it was not strong enough after multiple attacks. It retreated, slithering as swift as a snake back into the shadows and presumably back into safety of the trunks at the front of the room.

The lethifold wasted no more time and took advantage of the position the boy was holding. The wind-up, then the pitch. BOING! The creature sprung onto Seymours head trying to close off his nostrils and mouth and wrapping him up like a very tightly wound turban. Seymour was crouched down slightly, eyes shut tightly and wand pointing at the lethifold. Blindly, he waved his wand around towards where the lethifold was last time he saw it, trying to not let his absolute fear distract him from the memory, like the professor had warned them not to do. "Expecto patronum expecto patronum expecto patronum EXPECTO PATRONUM," he mumbled clumsily, shaking, the urgency in his voice growing with every repeated incantation as he felt the lethifold draw nearer and nearer, its damp, clammy air sending a chill down his spine. Yipes. A fine tendril of silver mist spirled out of the tip of his wand, feebly disappearing as it approached the lethifold. He peeked one eye open to evaluate his patronus; but suddenly, the bright colours and happiness of the room vanished under a dense, weighty shadow, completely blocking any air exchange that might have happened. Well. The patronus hadn't worked, then, had it?
He flailed and promptly dropped his wand, flapping his hands at his head in a pathetic attempt to rid of it. "Get... it... OFFFFFF!" his muffled voice squeaked, his lungs beginning to ache. No, no. Lethifolds did NOT make good hats. This one was, apparently, trying to be a balaclava. His hands grasped at the amorphous thing, desperately wanting to pull away from the spongy, fuzzy, slimy-feeling beast. He staggered, becoming dizzy. Oh, Merlin. He was going to die. He was going to die and the last thing he would have seen was that insanely happy cruppy prancing about on the blackboard, all high and mighty. The humanity! Gimme a P! P! Gimme an H! H! Gimme an A! After a few more moments, he reached the front of the class, standing between two large trunks which were spaced quite far from each other. "I ask that those who have successfully cast an animal queue up here, to my right. Those who can produce an ethereal patronus, to my left. Those who cannot yet produce a patronus, move to the back of the room and continue to work on your charm and I will come by to assist you once I have given the others their instructions." ooc: Please indicate where your charrie moves -- back of the room, to the left (ethereal patronus), or to the right (corporeal patronus) in your next post. Thanks! Abby decides she needs some more practice before she tries to battle a lethifold. She finds a quiet corner and works of her patronus. Abby consentrates on as happy a memory as she can come up with. She points her wand and says "Expecto Patronum!" A silvery mist is emitted from her wand. It forms into a winged horse, but it dissipates on it's own.

Nothing. "Ex-pek-to patronuuum!" He closed his eyes, too afraid to look, and hoped for the best... because what else could you really do? Cela let out a little shriek as she was knocked off her feet by Seymour, but she was so invested in her patronus, that it merely flickered but continued darting about. Quote:

Mixed with the euphoria of facing her fear for real, Celandine's emotions were completely and utterly drained and fragile. Her lip wibbled pathetically as she sat up to look at Seymour. How come he'd knocked her down?

As the lethifold fought back against her Patronus, Elizabeth was almost certain she had felt one of her ribs crack. But eventually her eagle got the best of the nasty little blanket, and she gulped in a breath as it fled. She wasn't about to move until she knew it wasn't coming back, but after a few seconds of scanning the room, she didn't want to be in the danger zone any more. Putting the hand that wasn't holding her wand to her side, she slowly made her way past the safety line, sitting on the floor by the wall once she was there. She knew her rib would heal, but that didn't keep it from hurting right now. Her eagle flew down and landed inches in front of her, planting itself there like it was still protecting her, even though the professor had said everyone on this side of the line was safe.

Kayla could hear the other students around her taking on the Lethifold and she still she waited patiently for them to attack and as such they hadn't as yet. She snorted softly, probably too scared of her...and rightly so too. She kept her happy memory fresh in her mind as she waited in the dark.

He gritted his teeth and pulled out his wand, setting a stance with his feet a shoulder-length apart. Now...what was going to happen exactly? He couldn't remember. Mastering his fear was going to be harder than he imagined.
Sam whipped around quickly, the hair on the back of his neck standing up. "Oh no..." he groaned as he saw some of the other students being attacked. It was more horrible than he thought it would be; he gripped his wand tighter. The boy had turned his head and a lethifold saw this as a key to positioning itself around him. Quietly, it rose up and began to stand erect comming at Sam from his right side. Quote:

To smother. Kayla kept completely still as she felt the Lethifold grab her from behind and pull her arms back, she immediately turned her wand around in her hand so that it was now facing behind her. Before the Lethifold could completely smother her face, she thought of her most happiest memory and let it fill her whole body entirely. With those three words in her head spoken from the person she treasured most in the world, Kayla took a deep breath. "Expecto Patronum" she bellowed and the usual silver mist shot forth from her wand and took on the form of her bear patronus instantly.
Still concentrating on her happy memory, she kept her wand pointing backwards and at the Lethifold and through the darkness she could see the brightness of her patronus. Kayla knew it was strong enough to drive the Lethifold away and she urged her bear up on to his hind legs to act more intimidating. If that didn't work than she had her other wand that she was quite happy to use.

The lethifold immediately drew back from Winters' bear. It swayed and collapsed, exhausted... as though it was suddenly a fainting blanket, of all things.

Using her wand she urged her bear forward toward the Lethifold, may as well finish it off while she was here. "Go get it" she whispered to her bear patronus and she watched with delight as he ambled towards the Lethifold.

As the lethifold released him for the moment, Seymour took a deep, heaving breath, wheezing and coughing slightly. My, my. With that damp an atmosphere and that lack of breath, he was surely to catch cold. He hadn't even worn a jacket out. What would mum say? Tsk. The oxygen and blood rushing to his face made him dizzy and he stumbled, falling onto his side and blearily looking up. He smiled weakly at Cela, waving, before the lethifold attacked again, its blunt strength pushing his glasses into his face and mushing down his nose. As it pinned his arms to his sides, the combination of lack of air exchange and unbalance caused him to topple over like a bowling pin, hitting the hard stone floor with a sickening thump!
With not even his arms to hit the lethifold with now, he merely rolled around on the floor in an attempt to geddit off, mirroring the Muggle stop-drop-rickroll technique. He just stopped after a few seconds of rolling, laying face-down on the cold stone floor and really kind of wishing he could take a breath right then. Was this... it? And he didn't even have a breath to say goodbye to anyone with? Suffocation was really quite a lame death. One that he didn't wish to pursue. Meh. |

Of course there was no force to warn him. Helios simply accepted the inevitable. Slow, steady breaths, each one precious as they could be his last. Eyes closed, shadows and panic students were distracting stimuli. All he wanted to see was within his minds eye.
Suddenly! Panic! Without warning, the shadow was upon him!
Most battle plans do not survive contact with the enemy. This was no exception. Failing in exceptional fashion, Helios was brought to his knees, propping himself up with one hand. But he still had his wand...
The mirror of Erised showed him his deepest desire. A memory to be made. One he silently promised to make happen after this class. It wasn't a past reflection that gave him strength, but hope for the future. "Expecto patronum!" A whisper to one, was a roar to another. What started as four pillars around him took the shape of a horse worthy to charge Hades. Wand aimed at his heart, he used it as a conduit to his patronus.
The eclipse. The girl. The kiss.
The shimmering silver steed grew the wings of an angel.

Via knew she could do it so she really gave her best to have a corporeal one. "Expecto Patronum," she said and thought of the happiest memory she had in mind. The time she met Nat and their times together... her sister's one of the happiest memory she could have.
Via had managed to produce a corporeal patronus in the form of a Doe. And that was the loveliest doe she had ever seen. She smiled as she watched it soar above. She's still on the other side of the line... she's safe. But she wanted to try her luck on the other side. She stepped beyond it and joined the other students. Via gulped as she forced her eyes not to blink or anything so she could get herself ready and focused if ever the Lethifolds are lurking somewhere around her. She gripped her wand tightly on her side.
She kept on thinking about her happy memory... Nat would be proud of me, she thought as she kept on glancing around for the Lethifold.
