You could write whether it's shiny or dull. If it looks a little deflated, then it needs water." He looked over the flower. "Looks like you'll have some fruit before your journal is done. It won't be ripe, but it'll be there."

"Yes, the fruit is edible. When it's ripe I might send you and your wife some for you to try. Anyway, here, look." He reached down, avoiding the quills and scraping a little of the waxy coating off the plant. The stuff on his thumb nail looked like it had come off of a very light-green candle. "See? And because wax has a tendency to be glossy, like candles and such, it makes the cactus seem a little shiny. If it's dull, then something is probably wrong with the plant."
