Hearing another request from Willow, Professor Shackleton quickly added more pages to her journal and said, "Hopefully that will last a bit!"

Professor Shackleton glanced at her watch and decided it was time to start the lesson. She greeted the class as a whole, "Good afternoon class. Today we are going to be studying the concept of Karma, including Karmic Debts and Lessons, as well as studying the Hidden Passion and Subconscious Self Numbers, which I like to refer to as 'the Numbers of Competence.' We have quite a bit to cover today so I'm going to try to move along rather quickly. If you find yourself getting behind, flag me down and I'll do my best to help you get up to speed.

"Now, who can tell me what Karma is?"

Kerry raised her hand, "Well basically Karma is a belief that what come around goes around, it's a sort of cause and effect idea based on our past and present actions. I guess basically the thought behind it is that In this world nothing happens to a person that he or she doesn't deserve for some reason. If you've done something good, it will come back to reward you, and if you've done something negative...well payback isn't fun to say the least. That's pretty much the idea of Karma."

Emily raised her hand "Karma - the belief that one reaps what one sows; the universal law of cause and effect in which thoughts or actions of the past show up in the present and require retribution."

"It is the universal law of cause and effect; it refers to past thoughts and actions which reappear in the present."

"Thank you" Willow muttered politely before answering The professor's quesiton, "Karma is sort of the universal law of cause and effect. It is usually understood as a sum of all that an individual has done, is currently doing and will do" She took some breath and then went on, "Karma is not about retribution, vengeance, punishment or reward either; it simply deals with what is"

Vince raised his hand and tried something: "The total effect of a person's actions and conduct during the successive phases of the person's existence, regarded as determining the person's destiny........ I think...."

Anna raised her hand. "Professor, Karma is the belief that what we reap, or cause to exist based on our actions, will provide us with benefits or sacrifices that result because of what we reaped. It basically means that we will ultimately get what we deserve based on our past actions - whether we deserve the good (the benefits) or the bad (the sacrifices). I think of it like a circle. When you do some action in your life, the circle, or cycle begins. The cycle can be either beneficial or sacrificial to you, but either way the circle will always come back around, and you will be forced to live your life based on what came back around to you."

Jessy didn't know exactly what karma was and decided to ask the professor. He raised his hand and asked "Professor, does this 'karma' have anything to do with the muggle religion of Hinduism?" It sounded like a silly question, but he needed to straighten out his knowledge of Arithmancy.

Barry had no idea what to say so he stayed silent.

Reese thought about the Professor's question.What is Karma?She thought to herself.She wrote the word on her parchment and looked up.

Professor Shackleton paced the front of the room as she listened to each of the students explain their own understanding of Karma, nodding as each highlighted the main concept. She agreed, "Yes indeed. You are all correct! Two points to each of you!"

She paused on the left side of the room and explained, "Karma, whether good or bad, is the playing out of universal cause and effect. The idea is that all life is connected, and so what you do, say, and think will eventually come home to roost.

"Now, there is some difference of opinion in how people view Karma. Some people believe that Karma subscribes to the notion of reincarnation, that the soul of an individual is reborn again and again into different physical bodies, and karma is worked out through each incarnation. Other people believe that Karma applies only to the past, present, and future of this lifetime. I am going to tell you this: It does not matter to me which belief system you subscribe to. At the very least, we will consider Karma in this lifetime. If you believe that it applies to more than that, it is entirely your perogative to do so. We will not speak any further about this matter, however. I hope I make myself quite clear." Macadrian hated to seem harsh, but she felt very adamantly about this topic.

After giving pause to allow the students to fully understand what she had said, she continued the lesson by reiterating, "At the very least, there is some labor of the soul that has to be righted. Each of us is responsible for our thoughts and actions."

Professor Shackleton gave them time to make notes and then asked, "What is a Karmic Lesson?"

"Karmic Lessons are numbers and vibrations missing from your birth name which serve as an indication of an energy that you must learn in the present and future because you haven't experienced or addressed them in the past. The experience of the missing number will appear in your life continually until you ultimately master that number's energy." Emily said with her hand in the air.

Saylie raised her hand, "A Karma lesson is the numbers that are missing from your full name...they tell you what is missing and these are what you need to work on more."

"They are numbers which are missing from our birth name and indicate the absence of a type of energy in the past which we need to use in the present and future"

Kerry raised her hand, "I think if I remember correctly, Karmic Lessons are areas that we are currently weak in, and that we must face and work on in this life."

Vince raised his hand again: "Karmic Lesson is, is a lesson or ‘tool’ you lack, as each letter and number in your name represents strengths and weaknesses.. A Karmic Lesson covers areas that you are currently weak in. If you are unequipped with a certain ‘tool’, it must be learned and mastered during your lifetime."

Alex sat there looking quite interested, he never gave an answer although, he always feeled that the best answer comes from other opinons. Alex smiled and jotted down notes with his quill. It was times like these he wished for a quick-quill.

Anna raised her hand again. "Professor, in the beginner's lesson, we talked about about numbers represented in our birth name, and you showed up how to assign each letter in our name a number. Karmic Lessons represent the elements that are missing from our birth name. These elements must be learned and practice in our present time and should continue to be practiced in our future. They're missing, basically, because...we haven't experienced them yet. We will continue to experience certain things in our life based on that missing number until we figure out how to master that missing element."

Reese raised her hand and said,"Number and...Dang it!"Reese forgot the rest.Sheput her hand back down and then remembered and said,"Oh,Sorry,there Numbers and vibrations missing from your birth name."

Barry didn`t know .

"Precisely correct! Two points to each of you!"

Professor Shackleton reiterated, "Karmic Lessons are indeed indicated by the numbers missing in your birth name. Whether the missing energy was purposely avoided in the past, or whether circumstances prevented you from including this in your field of experience is frequently debated amongst Arithmancers. Nevertheless, the missing numbers will have a substantial effect on your life at this time. The experience of the missing number or vibration will appear in your life continually until you finally master that number's energy."

Macadrian paused and then added, "Think of karmic lessons as a way to learn what's out of balance in your vibrational pattern: Once you know what number or numbers are missing from your name, you'll know what to work on!

"Now, I would like all of you lay out your full name given at birth and assign the appropriate number to each letter using the chart given in Chapter Two of the text. Determine which single digit numbers are missing to find your Karmic Lessons. Here is an example with my name."

Professor Shackleton used her wand to write the following in midair:

Vince had no clue what he had said or what the teacher just had explain but was going to give it a try anyway. Grabbing his quill and a piece of parchement, he wrote everything down.
