Arithmancy Lesson 1: Karma & Numbers of Competence

As you step through the Arithmancy classroom doors, you see the room set up as it always is: neat and exactly-positioned rows of wooden desks and chairs, the latter of which have cushions in a myriad of colors and textures to match your comfort and liking. The walls are filled with thick wooden shelves, on which rest a seemingly endless number of Arithmancy texts and the occasional Ancient Runes and Divination reference. For those students who studied Arithmancy last year or who came to the review session, the room looks very much the same, as does the woman awaiting your arrival.

When you look to the front of the room, you see a tall, blonde-haired woman in tangerine-colored robes leaning against a desk made of dark angelique wood. On the desk is a small placard reading "Professor Macadrian A. Shackleton - Arithmancy," as well as a small stack of thin, leather-bound booklets, an assortment of papers and quills, and several copies of the class textbook. She smiles at you as you enter the classroom and gestures for you to take a seat.

Theresa entered the classroom and greeted the professor.
She took a seat in the second desk, waiting for the class to begin.

"Great! My favorite class!" Jess thought as she entered the classroom. "Hello, professor, how are you today?" the girl greeted.
Then she took a seat next to Theresa, preparing to write down any new information they would learn during that lesson.

Emily wandered into the Arithmancy classroom and sat down next to Jess and gave her a small smile. She was nervous about this class. Arithmancy wasn't exactly Emily's stongest subject.

Willow stepped in the Arithmancy classroom with a little yawn. "Hello Professor Shackleton" She greeted the professor, before yawning again. I need to stop reading in the middle of the night.

Not even looking around to see who else was already in the classroom, she made her way to a sit close to the window, took out her journal and waited for that class ro begin. This was going to be a long class, that was for sure.

Saylie came in and took her usual seat in the front of the class. She flipped open her journal to one of the dwindling number of blank pages, noting idly that she'd have to get a second journal soon. "Hello Professor!" she said, cheerily, then finished arranging her stuff across the desk. Book on the left open to chapter, quill and ink at the top, journal tilted to left but on the right side, right foot under her, left on the floor. After all was in readiness she looked back up, anxious for class to start.

Jess was very happy to see Emily. She greeted her, but thought that she shouldn't start a conversation if she wanted not to lose house points.

Kerry walked into class, "Hello again Professor. How are you? I'm sorry I didn't get to see you at the end of the match the other day. I wanted to tell you that I thought you were great! Who knew you could fly like that." Kerry laughed. "I was very impressed. I'd fly with you again anytime. I still think we need a rematch, that game was a nail biter all the way to the end." Kerry grinned as she made her way to her seat.

Anna Banana 02-17-2008 04:58 PM

Anna entered the Arithmancy classroom and immediately caught the professor's smile. She smiled back at her and surveyed the classroom, trying to decide where she wanted to sit. She shuffled her books around and caught sight of a few Gryffindors already in the room. Anna took an empty seat by them, opened her textbook to chapter 13, and began to review what she had read about Karma.

Alex nodded and sat down, he smarten up his uniform. He placed his quill and books neatly on his desk and sighed, he was quite tired and looked a slightly pale. H elooked around, he was quite a loner this foreign french lad.

Jai walked in adjusting her bag on her shoulders. She spotted and familier head and went to sit by Alex "Good morning Professor." she said and smiled at Alex. She removed her bag from her shoulder and took out her books, quill and ink.

Amelia entered the classroom, with a smile. She looked around and found a seat near the front, taking out her journal and quill, she waited for the lesson to begin.

Professor Shackleton cordially greeted each of the students as they entered the classroom. When Kerry mentioned the match, Macadrian smiled and replied, "Oh well thank you, Kerry! You were quite good yourself! Both you and your sister, actually. Must have some Quidditch talent in your bloodline! Very nice job. And yes, I agree, we do need a rematch." Macadrian laughed as Kerry made her way to her seat.

Clasping her hands together, Professor Shackleton announced, "I think we'll wait just a bit longer to allow more students to arrive. Everyone should have their journals with them to take notes. If you don't because you've forgotten yours, you may take notes on parchment, but be sure to transfer your notes into your journal later. If you're a new student and you did not attend the review session, you may come up to my desk and take a journal. These journals will be the place you take all your notes and complete all your homework. When I assign homework, you will turn in your journal and I will make corrections directly on your work. Then I will return them to you so that you will have them for the next lesson.

"If your journal is running a bit low on pages, I have additional pages that we can insert into your journal quite quickly. Just let me know."

Jai stood and went to the desk to collect a journal. "Thank you professor." she said then returned to her seat and opened her book.

Saylie raised her hand at that, she might as well do it before class got underway. "Professor, Mine is running low." She grinned, knowing full well that most of her pages were full of notes taken over the holidays, but that was beside the point, the important part was that she only had a few blank pages left.

Vannie walked into the classroom, her brunette hair pulled off her face up a flourescent red hairband which clashed with the bright yellow ties she had in her hair. She smiled at the professor before taking a seat in the middle of the classroom.

Kerry looked up from her seat and grinned. "Yeah I guess there is something in the bloodline, although I must admit I think Agie got more of the talent than I did. Man I wish I could have stopped her." Kerry laughed. "Good thing we're on the same house team, or I'd really be scared."

Kerry reached down and grabbed her journal and realized she really was runninng low on paper. "Wow, I didn't realize we took so many notes last term. May I please have some more paper Professor?"

Jordan walked into the Arithmancy classroom and recieved a journal from the professor. "Thanks" She said with a soft smile. She then walked over to an empty desk and set her stuff down. The girl then took her seat and waited for the class to begin.

Vince walks in the classroom. This was his first and he was wondering what was going to happens. He had no expectation really. Walking toward the back of the class, he took the place where no other students were around.

Putting his thing on the desk and waited, ready to whatever would be thrown at them

Jessy walked into the Arithmancy classroom, a little confident that he knew his numbers now. "Hello professor!" He said as he found a seat.

Professor Shackleton grabbed a stack of parchment pages from her desk and approached Saylie's desk. She joked, "I should have known you would need more pages." With a flick of her wand, Professor Shackleton undid the binding on the girl's journal, inserted the blank pages, and resealed the binding back together. "That should take care of you for this term at least." Macadrian joked again, then spotted Kerry asking for the same service.

Professor Shackleton grabbed another stack of parchment pages from her desk and made her way over to Kerry's seat, going through the same steps to insert new pages as she had with Saylie's journal. She joked with Kerry, "No, I'm sure you both got equal amounts. And yes, I do believe you are quite lucky to be representing the same house. The other house teams need to be on their toes!"

Anna Banana 02-17-2008 05:26 PM

Anna surveyed her journal, turning it around and looking at it from all angles. She definitely didn't need any more pages added to hers just yet. Being only a first year, Anna had only filled up a few pages so far. "Well, no time like the present," Anna thought to herself, opening her journal to the first blank page and adding today's date to the top. She began to summarize a few key points from chapters 13 and 14.

Hearing the professor's Quidditch comment to Kerry, Anna looked up at Kerry, smiled brightly, and then got back to work taking her notes.

Barry walked in and said "Good morning professer and sat down near the boy he had dueled.

Angie 02-17-2008 05:26 PM

Willow yawned once again, as she opened her jorunal to check, wether she sitll had pages or not. "Professor Shackleton, I think I'm going to need one of those extra pages" She said politely with her hand in the air. She had taken Arithmancy during her first year in Hogwarts, so she only had around 4 pages left in her old journal.

The class better start soon, or she was going to fall asleep. Yawning again, she waited for the extra pages or her journal.

"Thank you Professor...I wonder how long these pages will last." Kerry laughed, as she took out her quill and ink bottle and then reached down to grab her text book as well.

She sat back up and laughed, "Well let's hope you're right Professor. Now that we have the Quidditch Cup, we're going to do everything to defend it this term, that's for sure."
