The walls were back to their blue state. Even the ceiling had somehow got painted blue. It was fabulous to Lainey and she had a certain Slytherins or two to thank for it. Her office was now re-decorated with all her keepsakes that Borr had taken from her. Yet another Slytherin had made sure to keep her things safe until her return. Over the summer vacation, Lainey had gotten herself a few dark detectors, a few cupboards that only she could open. Afterall, she needed a bit of privacy in her constantly busy office.

Not much had changed over the summer though. After last terms encounter with an old ... shall we say acquaitance ... Lainey had gone a bit paranoid. The event in Hogsmeade had haunted her for the whole of summer. Though, honestly, was haunting even the right word? No time to dwell on that...

Seated in her high backed chair, Professor Lainey works on repairing an old History book. She looks up as you enter and clearly is not sure if she trusts you. "Hi. What can I do for you?"

Rae knocked on Lainey's door before opening it slightly. "Oh... oh, sorry. You have a guest. I'll... can I come back later? Will you owl me when you're free? Or... I'll come back."

Julia shook her head quickly at Lainey. "No they don't! Everyone loves your classes. Really! I know I do. But maybe that's just because you teach it," she said thoughtfully, then shrugged and made Lainey's chair spin around in circles continuously. "Why yes, I am quite comfortable, thank you."

She beamed at Lainey and glanced at the door as Rae stuck her nose in. Julia brought herself to her feet and stood up straight, saluting in the direction of the headmistress. She couldn't resist. Bringing her hand down, she looked from Rae to Lainey. "Oh, professor, I can leave if you and Professor Rae would like to talk," Julia said. She picked up her school bag and was ready to leave if her Head of House agreed.

"Do I need to search you for Extendable Ears or can I trust you to go back to the Common Room?" Lainey walked Julia to the door."Find out who left that note on my door, too, squirt. I'll see you in class soon." Lainey gave Julia a nice pat on the head and let Rae in, shutting the door behind her.

"What brings Headmistress Branxton down to the my lowly office?" Lainey grinned and tossed a handful of peppermints at her before taking a seat.

Rae scowled at her friend for calling her by the wrong name before settling heavily into her chair. "Oh... I..." She pulled something from her pocket before stuffing it away again. "Can't a girl come and visit her best friend without having a reason? Maybe I missed your charming ways."

"I am very charming, aren't I? Why, look at this letter I got today." Lainey rolled her eyes and slid it to Rae.

"No," Rae smiled then, and it felt nice to smile at her friend's antics. "But it's well written and thoughtful. Did it come with a gift? Jewelry, I hope."

"Professor Danni actually gave it to me, thanks. Says she found it in the halls or something. She probably kept the gift herself as a toll for delivering it to me. Nothing comes free anymore." Lainey laughed and laughed.

"You don't just come down here though. What's up? If you're going to give me the Ravenclaws are in third place speech - you can save it. I already know."

"Are they? That's shameful, really. I mean... what are you doing about that?" Rae asked vaguely. "I just wanted to see you. Chat with you for a bit. You know." She brought out the vial again and set it on the desk.

"Throw them all in detention? Feed them to Borr? I don't know. I'm hoping they'll put it together by the end. We have a two year streak running, you know." Lainey shrugged and summoned the vial across her desk, using wordless magic. "Did you get me a present, too?" Lainey asked chipper as she could be, as she turned the label towards her.

Lainey's eyes grew to be as wide as dinner plates. "Certainly not a gift for me!" Lainey stared at the bottle, then at Rae, then at the bottle, then at Rae. "Who is this for..?" Lainey asked suspiciously. Certainly not Lainey. No way.

"Those are... mine. Just picked it up from Numel, actually." She leaned forward and propped her elbows on the desk. "I don't have to tell you that my five year plan is all screwed up now."

"Is that supposed to be funny....?" Lainey slid the vial back to her. She didn't want any part of those, no way. "So they're for you. So we're... are you sure? I mean, shouldn't you... Well, no obviously Numel would know. I like Numel, she's not crazy like some of the other lunatics around here...and I'm babbling." Lainey covered her face and shook her head. "Let me start over." She lowered her hands, "Congratulations!! We are happy about this, right?"

"We're... yes. I mean... it's a shock, obviously. I wasn't planning on it. Doyle wasn't. I might have to..." She put her hand to her head. "I'm going to have to quit, aren't I? I don't know how else to do this. But yes. We're very happy."

"You can't quit, Rae." Lainey was on her feet now. "Obviously, you can't quit. I mean, this school needs you. I need you." Lainey had a vision of herself taking over Hogwarts for Rae and it burning to the ground. "You can have it here. Numel is great. I just called your baby an it, Rae. Oh Merlin, a baby!" Lainey didn't know what to do or what to say or what was appropriate, so she just pulled Rae to her feet and made her twirl and dance with her. Seemed like the right thing to do to her.

Rae laughed as she was twirled. "Careful, I've got nausea pills in the other pocket for a very good reason." She grabbed ahold of Lainey and made her stand still. "Anj... I don't want to quit. Maybe I won't have to... I just need to see what Doyle says." She put her hand to her head and groaned. "I'm going to have to tell Doyle."

This news was quite possibly even more exciting than having a baby around. "You mean... you haven't told him yet? You told me before him? Can I tell him? No, but I mean, I would." Lainey was grinning from ear to ear. "Not that it matters who you told first or anything...." Lainey had to tuck her hands away to keep from spinning her again. "How are you going to do it?"

"You are a sick, sad person," Rae laughed and grabbed Lainey's hands again. "I'll tell him, and I want it to be perfect and right. Maybe tomorrow. I'll give him a card or... you can tell him. That is a good idea."

Outside the Professor's door, Sean could be heard chasing after the penguin. For a thing that was so small and waddled, it was pretty fast, "Waddles, come back! You need to go back to your owner." Eventually, Sean caught up to the penguin and started stroking the top of its head, "You're not too bad after all I suppose. But now, you have to go back to your mommy, okay? She should be in here," Sean said pointing to Prof. Lainey's door as they both headed to it.

Rae smiled at the boy in the door. "Yes, dear... we're going to be done in just a moment here," she closed the door behind her and turned back to Lainey. "No, I'll tell him. But I"m telling you first. You're my best friend, and you and I are in the same place. Your plans are my plans. I know you'll be happy for me, excited for me. Even if I'm not so sure myself yet."

"No.. I'm happy. I'm shocked and I suddenly have no right place for my hands, but I'm happy. We'll figure something out. I mean, it's only a baby right? How hard can it be?" Lainey was kidding herself, of course. "Carry your wand when you tell him. He might bust a blood vessel or break his glasses or something." Lainey shook her head. "Let Sean in whenever you're ready." Lainey gave Rae one last hug to go on, touching her tummy softly and briefly. She already had about a million names to suggest to Rae.

Sean stood in his place just outside the office and just watched as things happened still holding the penguin wondering what to do.

Touz: Rae closed the door on Sean, kiddo. He can come in.. in two seconds. I edited your post just a tiny, weeee lil bit.

"I think it's about the hardest thing there is," Rae laughed and put her hand over Lainey's. "You're godmother, you know? You're the best aunt she'll ever have. You'll be the fun aunt, and she'll like you better." Rae glanced at the door. "You suppose Sean has an emergency?"

"If a penguin is an emergency.. then yes," Lainey laughed. "And talk with that husband before making promises like that. You know how he feels about me. Or, at least, I am aware." Lainey shook her head, still smiling. "How about a penguin for your first gift?"

Sean continued to hold Waddles wondering if perhaps he should go to Professor Pride's office to see if the Professor was there, but decided to wait in case he was in Lainey's office. "The walk from class to class would be tiring," Sean said to himself. "I'll just wait."

"You know how I feel about penguins. I think that would be a lovely gift," Rae laughed. "I should go and lay down. I promised Numel that I would, and she has ways of making sure I behave myself." Rae grabbed Lainey. "Thanks, Anj. You made this a good thing."
