Default Wand Fitting

Just as you enter the shop, in between all the chaos that may or may not have been going on, is a rather open area with a measuring tape that seems to be hovering in mid air. It wiggles and flies around, ready to measure the next customer to walk into it's range. The measuring tape will eagerly measure your height, the reach of your arm, and maybe even other strange measurements to help the wandmakers find the best wand for you.

In front of the counter there is the empty space that is designated as the fitting area. Here is where wands are fitted. After being measured by the magical measuring tape, you will be assisted by a worker who will then endeavor to fit you with your perfect wand and start pulling boxes from the shelves, which stretch back impossibly far and up so high that even the tallest people have to tip their head back to see the tops.

Long sliding ladders are attached to every stretch of shelves, and the wandmakers make great use of these to reach those wands which are tucked away high up. There seems to be a filing system of sorts, some kind of method to the madness, though most of the boxes are unmarked. Is it a colour code? Or is it shape? size? smell? Something else? Well you'll never know unless you get a job here. Luckily, and out of sheer necessity, these shelves have been bespelled so that wandboxes are not in danger of flying everywhere due to errant spells cast by children wielding their new wands.

Text Cut: wand fitting instructions

⌦ In order to receive a wand, please take the WAND QUIZ ONCE for the character who is here for a wand. Then, post your character being measured by the "magical measuring tape" ONCE in this thread. This thread is not one where you should interact with others, one post here please! It serves as our queue!

See the example post below, or look at other posts in this thread from previous terms.

Text Cut: example post
Jessica went into Ollivanders with more than her share of nerves, it was time for her first wand! The eleven year old made her way over to the measuring area and waited for her turn. Soon enough the measuring tape reached her and began zipping about, straightening with a snap and measuring out her height and, when she held her arms out, she watched it take a measurement of how long they were too. Fun! Did that mean her wand would be as big as her whole arm?

The girl stepped away from the measuring area and she eagerly waited for the shopkeeper to find her wand.

⌦ Please take the SORTING QUIZ first and wait to be placed in your house before taking the wand quiz! Your house effects your final wand in our quiz! This goes for current members who are re-sorting too, though you may take the quiz in advance if you know what your new house will be.

⌦ You may role play the magical measuring tape, but you may not role play for the shopkeepers. Ollivander does not work here!

⌦ After submitting the wand quiz and posting in this thread, please wait for a shop worker to assist you and your character in finding their perfect wand match. You do not have to RP to get your wand, but it is highly encouraged as a part of enriching your RP experience.

⌦ Please do not stretch the wand fitting experience out too long, it should not take more than three tries at an absolute maximum to find your character's match.

⌦ If we run out of time to complete the RP with you by the end of the RP summer, we will PM or VM your wand result to you, provided you have posted in this thread and responded to our efforts to interact with you.

⌦ If you have any questions, feel free to PM Felixir or one of the Diagon Alley Proprietors and they'll try to answer your questions as quickly and efficiently as they can.

⌦ Have fun!

As his customer took the wand, Zeke straightened and stood by, keeping an eye out for any unmistakeable signs of a match. And in no time at all... there it was! Quite a charming little effect there too, uh... literally and figuratively.

"Yes, I believe you're correct. Very much so," he said, giving a small nod and a big smile. "A sign of magic like this, plus your own perspective, tells us what we need to know." Yes, Zeke really was quite convinced himself.

And so he held out the wand box again, so that it might be returned in order for him to do all the necessary business at the cash register. "Now, this wand is 11 inches of solid pear, with a unicorn hair at the core." They were getting through a lot of unicorn hair wands this summer, but Zeke wasn't too surprised, it being such a dependable core. He could attest to that with his own wand. "Pear is a wand wood that does not easily produce harmful magics - curses, hexes, or what have you, or dark magic. To make up for this, however, charms, transfiguration magic, and protection spells seem to have a kind of boost. It's a wand that feels eager to please and be as helpful as it can be; it will work with you in your magical endeavours, and you should be able to master it fairly quickly for this reason." Other woods... well. Let's just say some required a firm hand up until the moment of being truly tamed. Not so with pear. "With the unicorn hair core, this is an extremely faithful, gentle wand. The magic you produce will be consistent and reliable. Unicorn is also well suited to charms, transfigurations, and healing spells too. It's really a very lovely combination, the wood and core complement each other very well."

And that was that! Unless there were any questions of course; Zeke was always willing to answer those, and to talk about wands at length. "The wand is priced at 9 galleons. We also have some other products you may be interested in, too," he added, gesturing towards the inventory listed on the price board.
Alyx just stood there amazed for a moment and then looked at the shopkeeper. Still in awe of the magic, she stuttered, "Uh, yes, I'll take the wand. That was amazing. I can't wait to learn to use it more. All the information, the fact that the wood is pear and the core, this is all just so excited. I'm so excited to go to Hogwarts! I love it!"

She walked over to the price board and looked at all the products. She didn't want to go too crazy with the budget her parents had given her so she said, "I'll take the faux leather wand holster, I'd like it to attach to the hip. I'd like to have a pocket sewn into my first year wizard robes I have purchased from Madam Malkins. I have two robes and a cloak. I need the order rushed. Is that possible? I'll take the box that comes with the wand, and for now that will be all I need."

Alyx stood looking at the shopkeeper hoping he would be able to accommodate her request.

As far as I have seen for myself, it will always depend on the individuals in question; a higher likelihood of some similarities between the wands, but even that's not a given. Personally, I've never yet matched entirely identical wands to identical twins." But, also, there were plenty of other wandmakers around, and some who had seen exactly that phenomenon, and it called to mind questions about the likeliness of twin cores too. In the past, Zeke had also matched a few that complemented each other, or coordinated in some respect, between siblings as well as twins. "My own girls are identical too, peas in a pod, but I'm sure even they appreciate a distinction or two between them."

Now then, before he got too lost in the topic of his children - whom he avoided talking about too much, if he could help it, for though they appreciated his attention face to face, he was still mindful of their privacy - or the fascinating subject of wandlore, it was on to the wand itself.

And what a wand. Always delightful to see an immediate match. Zeke beamed at her. "You're quite welcome. This is clearly a match."

He held out the wand box so it might be replaced before he rang it up. "Now, this wand is 12 and a quarter inches of whippy red oak, with a snidget feather core. Oak is strong and powerful as a wandwood, and oak owners generally make excellent leaders; red oak in particular is drawn to passionate individuals." Hot-tempered also, but Zeke? He had tact. "It favours those with quick reactions, who are quick-witted and adaptable, and so makes for an excellent duelling wand - and doubly so with the snidget feather core - should you feel inclined to pursue that area of magic. Oak in general is well suited to protective and defensive spellwork." All in all, exactly the kind of wand a person might want on their side - similar to its preferred owner. "With the snidget feather core, this wand will be very responsive and consistent, well suited to Charms and, again, defensive spells, especially those that cater to evasion." And duelling. But Zeke had covered that already.

He smiled again, and gestured towards the price board. "The wand by itself will be 12 galleons, plus the price of anything else you might like today." But, also, "Will you be paying together or separately?"

[12¼ inch whippy red oak with snidget feather]

Interesting dynamic between these two, wasn't there? Not to mention, Zeke found himself having to hold back a smile at the this one's (he was tempted to say 'the younger twin', though of course he had no basis for that and was reluctant to make the assumption, but... found himself doing so anyway) dramatic gasp.

The wand returning itself to the box? Also amusing, but Zeke was a seasoned pro at not so much as smiling at the magical effects of the unsuccessful matches unless following the lead of his customer and how amusing they themselves found it. This customer seemed more worried than anything.

"I believe you," he said, in the most reassuring voice he could muster. "I think what's happened here is that the wand has politely declined this match. Which is nothing to be concerned about either." Such a considerate wand. Zeke put the lid back onto the box, and considered the other options at their disposal, based on what he had just witnessed. He picked out another, unlidded it, offered the wand inside.

"Perhaps this one will be more receptive. Give it a try, and we'll see how you go."

could TELL from his answer that it was a GOOD question to ask), she then glanced conspiratorially at Brayla. “Maybe we can be the first!” Wouldn’t that be something? Billie was happily ignoring the fact that, aside from their looks, they were very different people, in the hope of being the first of some amazing phenomena. She did wonder, briefly, about the wandmakerman’s twins, but she was far more interested in the wand things that were happening.

Wand things that made her even more smug, if that were possible. An immediate match. How wonderful. And the wandmaker was talking, and saying all WONDERFUL things about her, and Billie straightened up with pride. An excellent leader, absolutely. “Maybe I will try dueling. And yes, we’ll pay together,” she murmured thoughtfully, before turning her gaze back to her wand. Billie held the wand in front of her eyes, inspecting it closely, looking at every inch of the wood. Lowering it, she glanced at the box rather reluctantly - she wasn’t ready to put the wand away yet. What if it changed its mind? Did it have a mind? How did it work?

Luckily (or not, depending on who you were in this situation), she was distracted from all of those questions by Brayla’s wand had put ITSELF back in its box. The laugh she emitted was LOUD, and she clapped her hands over her mouth (wand included). “Sorry, but that was funny,” she muttered, preempting her sister's likely reproachful glare. She watched as the wandmaker offered another, hoping that this would work for Brayla and she wasn’t going to be difficult disappointed a second time.

Some weren't eager to have their little darlings getting into things like that. Well. Too late now.

... and the girl seemed reluctant to part with the wand, but, seeing as they would in fact be paying together, Zeke had set the wand box down again for the time being. He'd box both wands up once they were done here. Plus give reassurance, if needed, though he wasn't sure this particular customer would be so open about any potential separation anxiety with the wand as her twin was with her. Though he could be wrong. He sometimes was. Just not about wands.
Brayla was immediately envious of Billie's wand, not because of the immediate match but because the wandmaker said it was good for dueling. That's got to be a really powerful wand then, if it was good for dueling? Lots of booms and bangs in dueling, in Brayla's opinion. The actual details of the wand went over her head, because she wanted them to get to her second wand already and have it be hers. Brayla didn't tend to be nervous, and the unfamiliar knot in her stomach was unpleasant. And Billie's laughter hadn't helped. Hmpf. Apology not accepted, Billie Love. The wandmaker's words were nice, but she was smart enough to realise he definitely said them to everyone. They meant nothing.

Cautious now that the attention was back on her, Brayla gingerly took the second wand and got a good grip on it. She didn't care how seemingly 'polite' that other wand had been, she wouldn't be letting this one go. Overcompensating, Brayla swished very wide and.. nothing happened. Well, not nothing, the wood itself felt comforting under her fingers, the texture of it somehow feeling very right, like she'd always been holding this wand. Brow furrowed, Bray wondered if maybe the swishing was wrong, and flicked it instead. That seemed to do the trick, because a small white chrysanthemum slowly unfurled from the tip. Brayla's eyes widened at the flower, staring at it for a moment before looking up at the shopkeeper. "This one is mine." It wasn't a question.

Mathius gazed down at the the wand boxes, so similar and yet so massively different. He reached for the handle of the first wand, when the wands handle seemed to slightly smolder though a blink later showed the handle fire free. Number two pricked him with tiny wooden burs, but the third wand felt different. As he gripped it, a wonderful roaring feeling whirled around his head and heart. He felt like a landslide ripping down the mountain, as if he held something deceptively small and pretending to be something very light. "T-This one feels right..." Mathius said, in an awed voice.

Elise, who had vehemently insisted on getting her first wand by herself (much to her parents’ chagrin/disappointment/amusement), made her way into Ollivander’s and was delighted to see that she wasn’t going to have to wait long before she was assisted in buying her wand. She half-strolled, half-skipped over to the counter and grinned broadly. “I’m here for a wand!” she announced happily. “Let’s see which one of these beauties is going to choose me, shall we?”

A moment later, she was giggling as a tape measure began flying around, measuring arm length, height, and even head width. After a long moment, it finally stopped. Now, thought Elise, Now comes the fun part.

"I'm thrilled to hear it," Zeke said, completely genuine in his tone, and in the smile he also gave the girl. Hogwarts was very exciting, no matter a child's magical background.

He moved over to the cash register and started to ring up the wand and the hip holster in faux leather, but stopped short of calculating a quote. Far be it from him to deny his own shop more business, but he also wasn't the sort to take money from children when he may not need to. A rush order on three possibly unnecessary pockets would be quite the price too.

"11 galleons for the wand and holster then," he began, and drummed his fingers on the counter. "But for as for the additional pockets, your robes will have suitable pockets as part of the design already - though it's generally safer for the wand to keep it in a holster. I can add additional pockets if you'd still like me to, but I fear it would be a waste of your money." And if not, then the 11 galleons would be the final price.

Resting one elbow on the counter, with the wand box ready should this one also politely decline the match, Zeke watched for any telltale signs. At first it seemed that nothing would happen, but then... did he detect a slight shift in demeanour, just before the appearance of... a beautiful little flower - he was no floral expert, tress were his thing, so the precise name was beyond him.

But his customer was the expert on this particular wand, and more specifically if it was a match, which she confirmed in the next moment. Zeke beamed at her. "Wonderful news. I agree wholeheartedly." Interesting too, given the earlier question.

"This is twelve and a quarter inches-" Again. "-of pliant birch-" Alas, not the same. "-with a snidget feather core." But that was similar to her sister's wand, of course. Welcome news, he hoped. "Birch wands are particularly suited to healing magic, and exemplary with 'positive' spells - protection and defensive magic should also come a little easier. It's also well suited to cleansing magic, water spells, and binding and ward magic." The latter of which was more likely to be useful a little later down the line, though it was never too early to learn your basic warding charms. "This wood is well suited to learning new spells, as it tends to choose owners who like to try new things. It tends to like those who are creative, appreciate nature, and take inspiration from the calm outdoors." Which had less impact on the owner it chose, but might be interesting information all the same. "And, again, snidget core wands are responsive and consistent, perfect for learners. Well suited to charms and, as with birch, defensive spells, evasive type magics, and excellent for duelling."

So that was that. Zeke smiled broadly and held the box out, for the wand to be returned, so that he could ring both wands up together. If, that is, the young lady was willing to relinquish it. "11 galleons for this wand, and, of course, the price of anything else you might like today."

Zeke stood patiently by during the boy's exploration of the three wands, allowing him to find his own way to the right one. The right one for him, he should say; every wand was right for someone, as every witch or wizard could be chosen by a wand. At least in his experience.

And there they had it, right there. Something in the boy's bearing had shifted, very subtle it was too, but there was no denying it. He'd confirmed the match, and that was an honest assessment if Zeke had ever heard one. "Excellent," he replied, smiling warmly. "It has chosen you. Congratulations." A big moment. Surely he could be sure of that just from experiencing being matched with his wand.

After another little pause, so as not to bulldoze right over said moment, Zeke began to explain the specifications of the wand. "Now, this is thirteen and a half inches of pliant pine, with a graphorn horn core. Pine is a highly adaptable wand, willing to be used in all kinds of new and creative magical pursuits." If you asked him, the adaptable ones were some of the best, especially for those who might want to take their magic to another level, to pastures as yet unseen. "Particularly suited to non-verbal magic - something you'll be learning in sixth year or so - potions work, hexes, jinxes, curses of all types, and conjuration and transfiguration magic. Pine wands are said to detect and perform best for owners destined to live long lives." Good news, no? "Now, graphorn horn cores are not readily available, graphorns being so endangered; most graphorn wands were made a long time ago, and I know that this wand has waited a long time to find its owner. As a core, it's excellent for defensive magic and duelling spells, quite the martial nature, though it has a surprisingly delicate touch too."

There now, plenty to be getting on with. Zeke smiled again, set aside the unsuccessful matches, and held out the wand box for it to be returned and the transaction to go ahead. "The wand is priced at 9 galleons. We have other products too, if you're interested." He gestured towards the inventory list.

Zeke had just handed off a huge selection of wand boxes, - containing unsuccessful matches - to the shop apprentices, in order to have them cleaned up and put back where they belonged (at least until they found their perfect owners). No sooner had he dusted of his hands, however, than his enchanted parchment flew up to him with another set of measurements to look over. Naturally, this did not surprise him, aware as he was of the most recent customer, and her delightful announcement upon entering the shop.

He hummed and hawed to himself for a moment, taking stock of the measurements and ruling out possibilities, and deciding on those that seemed highly likely to find a match in this next potential owner. Then it was off to collect a small clutch of wand boxes, before finally he stepped forward to greet the young girl.

"Hello there," he said, just as enthusiastic and welcoming as he'd been for every young customer the whole summer so far. "Ready to find that wand of yours? Let's see what we can do for you."

He set the wand boxes down on the counter and picked through them for a moment, before drawing out what was, ideally, the most promising candidate. With the lid lifted from the box, Zeke held it out so the girl could take the wand from it by the handle, and gave her an encouraging smile. "Take this and give it a wave, and we'll see what happens. Tell me if it feels right." She'd know. They often just knew.

Elise took the wand, looked at it momentarily, then gave it a wave. She thought she felt a little tingle in her palm, but, not being sure, gave it an even more elaborate wave. This time, there was no mistaking it. Not only did a burst of warmth course through her, but a stream of golden bubbles flew out of the end and floated off in all directions in the store.

“I’d say this one likes me.” Elise laughed, reaching up to pop one of the bubbles. “What kind of wand is this? It looks magnificent!”

To say he was an emotional wreck would be an understatement. Their youngest getting a wand? Soon to go off to Hogwarts? Zander Adair was a MESS. Fortunately he had Soph by his side to reel him and keep him sane, and his eldest to talk his ear off while they went shopping. The perfect distraction, really. Zander made sure to nod and hum every time Mia paused for dramatic effect, but when she wasn't looking, he made sure he was glancing back to where Alfie trailed behind them, checking he was still there. It was hard to tell with Alfie sometimes.

Thinking about everything that was happening all at once had set off anxious tornados in Alfie's head. The only way to stop it was to stop thinking and he hadn't figured out how to do that yet. So while it looked like he was quietly trailing behind the rest of his family, he was actually having a very unquiet conversation in his own head. He was really trying to tamp down the sound of his own voice though, he wanted to listen to Mia's story too.

When they reached the door, Zander pulled it open and waited for Mia, Sophie, and then ... .... Alfie, to step inside the shop. "Are you excited, bud?" Someone ought to commend Zander for the act of bravery he was putting on right now. Forget the acromantulas and Cold Ones, THIS was his real nightmare.

Alf nodded - physiologically, anxiety and excitement were almost the same. Maybe his wires were crossed and that was why he was feeling the wrong one. Or, perhaps, it had something to do with the world's most overstimulating environment that he had stepped into. Boxes stacked up high, jutting out without any apparent rhyme or reason, spells going haywire, kids running around outside, the bell on the door ringing with every exit and arrival. There was so much happening. Forget primary show and tell, THIS was his real nightmare.

Gently, Zander nudged his son to step forward for measurement.

And Alfie, not anticipating the measuring tape, stiffened immediately upon its arrival.

Hand-in-hand with Zander, Sophie didn't know who needed comforting more: her husband who was about to be empty-nested, or her sweet summer child who was about to embark on a frightful adventure to the school she had once vowed to never send her children. There was no denying that Hogwarts was historically a breeding ground for tragedy and despair - but Sophie also couldn't deny that it was the place where she met so many of the people who have been most important in her life, too. There was good and bad, as with all things in life, and she had to trust that Hogwarts would be the best seven years of Alfie's life so far.

It was either believe that, or be as stressed as Zander right now.

Soph gave Zander's hand a little squeeze to steady him as they sought to juggle their attention between their enthusiastic daughter and less enthusiastic son, who kept trailing behind them, even as Soph tried to offer him her free hand to have him join them in pace. It was admittedly considerate of him to fall back so they were only two bodies wide instead of three in the crowded street, but Soph wanted to ensure he was included. This afternoon was about him, after all.

Coming to Ollivander's was, like, a rite of passage, and Mia was psyched to show Alfie the ropes to this whole charade - even though they both kind of knew how this stuff went, growing up with a wandmaker for a mum. But it made Mia feel important and clever and useful to have taken it upon herself to lead the way for today's little outing, and she was going to milk this opportunity for all it was worth.

"I hope it's still the same guy who fitted me! He's the one who graduated a year before you, wasn't he?" she asked her parents as if it was her duty to make sure all four of them were up to speed on who Zeke was as if no one else was likely to remember such things. She led the way into the shop as her dad held the door open for them. "But he was a Slytherin like me," she boasted. Which made him extra cool, sorry Mum and Dad!

"Uh huh," Sophie simply replied with an amused glance to Zander and released his hand to follow her daughter into the wand shop, trusting the boys to bring each other strength as Mia forged forward.

Mia twirled grandiosely once they were inside, taking in the spectacle of the place. Wands weren't exactly her thing like they were her mum's, but she loved the smell and the atmosphere and the whole vibe. There was a whole universe of potential in this one little shop, and it made her feel invincible, just being here.

When she saw her dad nudge Alfie toward the measuring area, Mia perked up and rushed to his side. "It's okay! It's not gonna hurt you. It's cool. See?" she practically cooed as the tape began taking his measurements, and Mia helpfully reached out an affectionate hand to soothe down Alfie's hair as if to say, Your big sister's got you.

Zeke wasn't sure why he bothered with the mug of coffee some days, or more specifically on days like this. It was like he woke up and said to himself, 'it's the most hectic time of the year, and I will definitely have time to enjoy this coffee, and I definitely will not need to re-heat it eighteen times to do so.' Foolish.

Having taken a sip of the tepid stuff (the last customer he'd fitted with a wand had taken a little while to get through the payment stage), Zeke turned to his next customer. He couldn't help but think this one might be one of those who did not take too kindly to the measuring process, but sometimes it was hard to tell for sure. But... aha! Zeke recognised the young lady who was with the boy, one he'd seen a year or two (or three? it was getting harder to keep track of time, it did have that tendency to fly) earlier, which meant, yep, he recognised the parents even more so. "Hello, hello. Good to see you again," he greeted them all warmly, and took up the measurements, once his measuring tape and parchment were all done collecting them. He mulled over it all for a minute or so before looking up. "If you'll just give me a moment, I have a few potential candidates in mind."

And then off he went, moving around the shop floor and dipping into the back room to find what he needed, and then coming to a stop in front of his young customer once again. "Now, then. My name's Zeke, I'll be helping you find your wand today. So, if you're ready, we'll give this one a try," he said, and opened up one of the boxes to offer the wand inside it to the boy. "A quick wave should be enough for us to see." Or not see, as the case sometimes was.

Default Hi bestie and fam!
Ern's Walmart Greeter

WooooHOOOO. First wand fitting! First but not only 'cause if dad could have two wands then so could he!

Brooksie was practically vibrating with excitement as he entered the shop just a few paces ahead of his parents and sisters. They'd all done this before, hECK, some of them had even seen each other get their wands! But him? He had no idea what was coming next. He'd asked everyone like seventeen times what it was like and they all kiiiiinda gave a similar answer but his could be totally different. Maybe more special. It would be more special, actually. He was the only boy so.. it had to be.

With a big grin being thrown over his shoulder at his family, Brooks darted toward the measuring station, spotting Alfie and his family there too. He watched his friend for a few long moments, giving him the bIGGEST TWO THUMBS UP before hopping up into place for his own turn.

The softest whisper of 'go best friend, go best friend, go' could be heard as the measuring tape started it's job.

Surprisingly, it was Zander. He was the one who needed Sophie’s comforting more. It all worked out in the end, Mia would comfort Alfie and Sophie could comfort him. The women in this family stayed CARRYING. And for that reason, Zander Adair would stay forever a simp for his wife.

He wrapped an arm around her waist as he watched their youngest standing cautiously still. It was all he could do to keep himself from intervening in attempt to help. In his nightmare scenario, he rushed to Alfie’s side to support, only to get in the way and ruin everything. Though unlikely, he wouldn’t risk it.

Zander’s hold only loosened when Mia moved to comfort little Alfie. The sweet moment full of so much warmth. Zander had never worried about Mia the way he worried about Alfie. There was a general sense of nerves that came along with sending your first to Hogwarts, but Mia was brave and strong and outspoken. Alfie wasn’t any of that. What if Hogwarts was too much for him?

But just as quickly as it hit him, Zander’s worries slowly dissipated — the way Mia’s comforting touch visibly eased Alfie’s nerves, it was a reminder that they weren’t sending their son away on his own. Turning to his wife, while his children were distracted, he whispered, ”I-I think he’ll be okay after all.” Maybe. He’d still send weekly letters though. In case.

Maybe most kids would find it embarrassing if their older sister ruffled their hair and offered reassurances in public, but Alfie wasn’t most kids. His relief was palpable. He loved having Mia by his side. She made everything easier. He whispered a thanks, and offered her a small smile as the measuring tape circled him.

When he saw his best friend enter the shop, he was already feeling far more confident than minutes prior. Instinctually, he raised a hand to offer a quick (but firm) wave hello, accidentally whacking the magical measuring tape in the process.

O_____o

”Sorry,” he offered a whispered apology to the tape and lowered his hand, his face beet red when he stepped up to the counter. He’d catch up with Brooks later. When there were less measuring tapes in the air and stuff. Instead, he tried focusing his attentions really, really hard on the wandmaker who was now introducing himself.

Alfie nodded to show he was listening, but otherwise stayed quiet - not knowing if he was supposed to introduce himself in return. Zeke meets thousands of kids every year (probably), Alfie didn’t want to put added pressure on him to have to remember another name. So he just smiled politely instead. Hopefully his smile wasn’t off putting.

When the wand was offered to him, Alfie looked from it to Zeke back to it and then to Mia and then mum and dad. He had already embarrassed himself once today, he didn’t want to make it a second. So he concentrated really hard on wishing that this first wand would be THE wand and only after putting that energy into the world did he take the offering. Holding it felt good. Natural, even. Nothing like the chopsticks he’d steal away with and pretend were wands at home.

His shoulders relaxed as he looked at it for a long moment, inspecting it before he gave it the lightest wave. And when the wand emitted golden sparkles that danced around him for an extended moment or two before disappearing, Alfie felt a rush of relief.

……. Did that mean? Was this the one?

This time he looked from the wand to his mum and dad and then to Mia and then to Zeke. He thought about handing it back, but he really didn’t want to.

He was back sooner than he would have thought. Kennedy was sure his next visit to Ollivanders would be in a few years when Angel came of age for his first wand. As it was, life had other plans in store and he was a few years early. It was also through unforeseen circumstances that Kennedy and his family had a new member in their home and the reason they were here on this day.

Glancing down at the child, he felt his chest tighten a little. He’s been in similar shoes before, the only difference was that he had been fought over. Both his mother and father could not see eye to eye, but they both wanted him. In Yulietta’s case…

He adjusted one of his twin daughters on his hip and affectionately pinched her cheek. She giggled and patted her little hands all over his face. In between little hands, he glanced over at his wife, who had the other twin. Gabriella was a strong woman, but he could see in her eyes that she was fighting back tears. Yulietta had really gotten to her, and she had already bonded with his niece a lot more than he had.

Green eyes moved downward to where the eleven year old stood close to his wife. She fiddled with the end of her ponytail, her eyes wide as she took everything in. He smiled at her but she simply blinked and looked away.

Yulietta’s mind was racing. How many wands were in here? How did the employees know which one belonged to whom? Could they read minds?! Yulietta’s hair fiddling intensified. She did not wish them inside her head, reading her thoughts. They were all in Spanish so they probably wouldn’t understand, but STILL. Having someone in her head would be uncomfortable.

When it was her turn, she glanced up at her aunt Gabriella. She only stepped forward to the measuring area when the woman gave her an encouraging nod. Aunt Gabby made her feel safe–safer than her mom ever did. Uncle Kennedy on the other hand…he was a protector in Yulietta’s eyes. Which was a positive thing. The not positive thing was his daughter, Violeta. That girl was scary, loud and jealous. From the first day she arrived at their home, Yulietta knew uncle Kennedy was off limits.

You know what wasn’t off limits, though? Her new wand. Turns out she’s been a witch this entire time and not some weird kid with weird side effects. She was…normal in this world.

Now, didn't this one seem to be quite the enthusiastic type. Zeke had caught sight of the double thumbs up to his other customer earlier, and just managed to hold back a chuckle. Now, though, now he could focus on this young man's fitting. Full and undivided attention guaranteed. Come to think of it, maybe he should put a sign saying something to that effect on the door... hm. Maybe not.

Zeke straightened his waistcoat compulsively just as he was accosted by his enchanted parchment and the measuring tape, the latter of which zoomed off to find the next customer, while the wandmaker himself took note of the measurements. Mhm, mhm, ah yes, naturally...

Releasing the parchment to return to its work as well, he ducked into the back room to pluck a couple of wand boxes from the shelves, then re-emerged to greet his next customer.

"Hello there, young man. Ready to find your wand?" Zeke hoped so; that was why he seemed to be here, after all. He smiled indulgently and removed the lid from one of the boxes, and held it out. "Give this one a try. Quick wave should do it."

And then, ah. And then they would see.

……. Did that mean? Was this the one?

This time he looked from the wand to his mum and dad and then to Mia and then to Zeke. He thought about handing it back, but he really didn’t want to.

Zeke said it often - so often, in fact, that everyone from his apprentices to his partner to his own children were probably sick to the back teeth of hearing it - but the signs of a match weren't always in the effects the wands produced. Sometimes they were in the loosening of tension in the shoulders, or the grip of the wand. Sometimes there was the shadow of a smile, if not a relaxing of the expression. It was even in the eyes, sometimes, in the slightest dilation of the pupils, but that was an awful lot harder to catch in practice.

And so it was that, even before the golden sparkles were conjured up, Zeke noticed a myriad of telltale signs, however subtle, in the boy's very demeanour, all of which pointed towards a match.

Still, he didn't speak up right away, waiting for the boy to announce how the wand felt, whether he felt it was the one... or not. When he didn't speak, but continued to hold onto the wand, Zeke made the executive decision that this was as good a declaration as any. "Yes," he said, and nodded. "I believe we've found it. No doubt." Unless, of course, the boy wanted to speak up and indicate otherwise...

All the same, Zeke went on with the necessary details. "This wand here is 12 and three quarter inches of sturdy birch, with a core of griffin claw. This is a wood particularly suited to healing magic, and exemplary with good, positive spells. You may find that protection and defensive spells come easily to you, when the time comes to try them." Zeke did not like to make assumptions, but he did like to think that this boy was one who would understand in the benefit of having good defensive capabilities. "Birch is also well suited to cleansing magic and water spells, and binding and warding magic, and to learning new spells in general. It is said that birch owners tend to be creative, appreciative of nature, and take inspiration from the calm outdoors." Just a fun little factoid there. "The griffin claw core often pairs with the dextrous sort, and you're likely to find that delicate wand movements will feel more natural. Again, the core is well suited to protection spells and shields, and is also ill-suited to dark magic and such like. Griffin claw wands bond very closely to their original owners too, so it would not be easy to pass it on to someone else." The very idea might seem unthinkable now, with the momentous occasion of matching with the first wand, and all the feelings that went with that, but still, these eventualities did come to pass sometimes, for some reason or other.

Anyway. That, as they said, was that. Zeke smiled again. "11 galleons for the wand by itself, plus any extras you might be interested in today."

As it happened, were Zeke a reader of minds - which, alas, he was not, but imagine how much that would simplify the wand fitting process, though that would come hand in hand with all kinds of ethical issues - he may have been able to glean some meaning from this next girl's thoughts. Not all, mind, it had been years, decades really, since he'd spoken the language with any regularity, he was most familiar with the Puerto Rican variety, and he'd had no reason to speak it in any context related to anything... wizardy... but still.

Of course, not being a mind-reader, he had no inkling that any of this was relevant, or that there might be any benefit to making it known. It was business as usual, and Zeke emerged from the back room a few minutes after the parchment bearing the measurements had whisked off to find him. He'd given them the attention they deserved, and picked out a couple of likely candidates: wand boxes he now had clasped in his hands.

"Hello there," he said cheerfully to his next customer and co, with his usual friendly smile, as he set one box down and opened up the other. "Let's see if we can't find your wand," Zeke went on, not suspecting any limited understanding of his words. Funny, given how averse he usually was to making assumptions. He held out the open box, offering the wand inside. "You know how this works? Just give it a wave, and tell me how it feels."

The waiting was AGONY even if it were only a few moments before the shopkeeper returned. It did, however, give his family time to catch up. His dad gave his shoulders a quick squeeze before linking arms with his mother again, just in time for the shopkeeper's return. Brooksie's eyes brightened instantly as he popped up on his toes, inching toward the shopkeeper with a few little bounces.

"Is this it, is this it??" the box was even exciting for the small brunette. Eagerly, he plucked the wand from it's casing, inspecting it suuuuuper closely, turning it over in his hands carefully before giving a full grin back at his parents and sisters, not daring to wait another moment before giving it a good swish.

Instantly, the wand emitted a bright white light as a spark jolted above him, the light bobbing for a moment before erupting into a small firework, making a crackling noise as little lights danced around him.

WOOOOAHHH.

Saying that his smile stretched wider than it ever had before was putting it lightly. He'd be feeling this for days to come. "How'd you know this one was mine?" Could HE pick one for other people some day? HOW COOL.

As the man came out from wherever he’d been, Yulietta grew tremendously nervous that she only understood the word ‘hello’ and none of the rest. Not that she’d fully understand, but she tried to absorb as many English words as she could. In new moments like these, her mind went blank and only alarms blared in her head.

Panic kicking in, she gripped the strap of her cross-body bag and shot a glance at her aunt. The older woman translated what the man said and Yulietta nodded in understanding. Gently picking up the wand, she tried to will her hand to stop trembling but that was like asking the sun not to shine. She gave it a soft wave, not expecting anything extraordinary to happen, but it did. The wand glowed. It glowed to the point of causing her eyes to squint. The light was bright and warm. It took her by surprise, causing her to drop the wand as she started.

“Lo siento!” she said in her native language, meaning I am sorry. Was she in trouble?

It was rather odd being back in Diagon Alley. Or maybe it was just that she was having a hard time dealing with the idea that her baby sister was old enough to be getting her wand and going to Hogwarts, but either way, Stasya had jumped at the offer to be the one to take Persie to get her school supplies. Luckily she had been around, actually, not back in Norway, but the blonde former Gryffindor had very much not wanted to miss this. It was nearly like watching her own girls getting their wands, but Kestrel and Linnet were far from that eventuality. The two-year-olds were with Koen for the day, giving her the chance for one-on-one time with her sister.

Not that she hadn’t considered bringing the girls along, but she didn’t get a lot of Persie time since she wasn’t always in the country. Not that she regretted her choice one bit. (okay maybe a little but it was more due to seeing Demyan appearing to follow in their dad’s footsteps instead of letting Chase in like she herself had)

But now was Persie time, as she stood aside to let the ickle blonde take her line in the queue.

It was WAND TIME! Persephone Linnea Ward was getting her wand finally, and she was barely holding back the excited shivers as she glanced back at where her sister was waiting. It didn’t matter that she wasn’t actually her full sister. Persie very much chose not to acknowledge the half-sister status because it didn’t matter. Stasya and Demyan were her siblings and that was that. Even if Papa wasn’t their actual dad.

But back to getting her wand, and she’d let her big blue eyes scan over the other kids as they’d gotten their turn. It was fascinating and she wasn’t going to allow herself to be nervous. Even if she didn’t think she saw anyone around from the junior Gobstones camp. She wasn’t alone.

She held back at asking the measuring tape any questions as it began to do whatever it felt was necessary. Mama would’ve told her if it was scary. Or Stas would’ve, or Koen, or Papa. She figured they all survived it so she could too. Besides, it was all for getting her WAND. That couldn’t be scary.

It was all Zeke could do not to chuckle at the boy's enthusiasm there and then. Was this it? He was almost as eager to know. Almost. Zeke didn't think for a moment that his eagerness could overshadow this moment of being matched with a first ever wand.

He didn't have an answer for the boy, but, of course, the wand itself did. Zeke clapped his hands once in appreciation, and was about to say something along the lines of how it seems it was the right wand after all, when the boy beat him to it.

Now Zeke really did chuckle. "As much as I'd like to say I get them all right first time, sometimes there is an element of trial and error too. But having a keen understanding of those measurements certainly pointed us in the right direction, no?"

With all the confirmation necessary that they had indeed found that first wand, Zeke gave a broad smile and started on detailing the specifications.

"Now then, this wand is thirteen and a half inches of solid red oak, with a griffin claw core. A very strong and powerful wand wood, and this type in particular tends to be drawn to those -" Passionate... and hot-tempered, at times, individuals... "- who have very quick reactions. An excellent duelling wand, should you feel inspired by that particular area of magic. Its ideal master is quick-witted and adaptable, which makes sense, with the duelling aspect. Many agree that an oak wielder is ideal to have beside you in a fight." They never - or rarely - backed down. Hm. But perhaps best not to give ideas; you never could tell which customers were the type to go seek out a fight or duel for this very reason. Not that Zeke assumed as much from this boy. "Oak wand owners make excellent leaders, intuitive, strong, and admired by many. And it's well suited to protective and defensive magic." Perhaps that went without saying, but Zeke, naturally, said it anyway. "With a griffin claw core, you'll likely find delicate wand movements are more natural, and protection spells and shields will be some of the easiest spells for you to master. This is a core for noble-hearted individuals, and is ill-suited to the dark arts or nefarious endeavours. It will bond very closely with you, its original owner, and so will not be easy to pass on to another, should the occasion arise."

So there he had it, his new wand. Zeke smiled and offered the box again, so that the wand might be properly packaged and rung up at the cash register. "The wand by itself is 12 galleons, and we have other products and services you may be interested in, too."

Generally speaking, Zeke prided himself on being observant, and he knew that he really was. Still. Some things slipped by him, especially things not directly related to wands, and so in spite of the signs of alarm in his young customer when he first spoke, it took hearing the translation by one of her chaperones for the likely reason to properly click. Ah. Right.

No matter, he could adjust, and he could do so without any fanfare or calling attention to said adjustments.

"Está bien," Zeke said gently, stooping to retrieve the wand and holding it out again, smiling slightly. It's okay. He didn't need her to try the wand again, though. It was quite clear, perhaps to all present, that they'd found the right one. "This is it. This is your wand," he added, in English now, but perhaps a shade slower and more deliberate than he had spoken before.

There was a pause, then, as Zeke considered. He did know his Spanish, to a degree, but there was no chance of him reeling off magical characteristics in anything but English. This customer had adults who could, of course, likely translate and remember these details for her, but Zeke thought important to provide the information - exactly as he spoke it - so that she might have it for later. This was operating, however, on the assumption that she intended to learn, or improve, her own English.

And so he gave a flick of his own wand to summon a piece of parchment and a quill, to which he dictated the wand's specifications as he spoke them to his customer and her chaperones. "This wand is eleven inches and one third of balanced cherry, with an augurey feather at its core. Cherry is a highly-prized and beautiful wood, if I do say so myself, and self-control and strong will are a must for those who wield it." Important that, because cherry could be fairly lethal in what it could do with the magic produced. Perhaps surprisingly so. "This wood is excellent for healing spells, binding spells, and divination, and, additionally, many herbology enthusiasts find it to be a suitable wand. As for the core, augurey feather wands are very selective about who they choose, and make for very loyal wands. It has a curious characteristic, too, of becoming especially responsive, particularly with non-verbal magic, on any day that rain is due to fall. Augurey feather wands are also well-suited to divination magic, as well as charms, particularly those spells that silence, or that raise the alarm."

Did it get all that? Zeke paused to read over the parchment, dismissed the quill, and handed it over to his customer with a smile, then addressed both her and the adults who accompanied her. "12 galleons for the wand by itself, and we also have some products and services that you may be interested in, too."

"Hello there," Zeke greeted this next customer, emerging from some shelves with a wand box in either hand and a smile on his face. He'd been doing a little tidying around the shop when this newest customer's measurements - or, rather, the parchment they were written on - came to find him. It had only made sense, therefore, to pick out some prime candidates right away.

And now he was here, smiling broadly at the girl who had come to be fitted with a new wand. "Let's see if we can't find you a wand, hm?" Zeke said, setting one of the boxes down and opening up the other. There was nothing to say that the wand that chose this girl would definitely be in either box. If it wasn't it would help direct him to the right one, but Zeke was feeling confident.

He held out the open wand box, offering the wand inside it to the girl. "Just give it a wave, and tell me if it feels like the one."

A small light of hope danced in her chest when she heard his reassurance. It wasn't often that she found someone outside of family that spoke her language. That phrase alone brought a small, shy smile from the brunette. She could tell when people spoke slower in english it was for her sake, like Fibi had, and she appreciated it a lot she could almost cry. But she wouldn't.

"Mía," she whispered, her hand reaching out to accept her new wand. Mine. This was her wand. She had a wand. The notion of being a witch and now possessing a wand was so ridiculous and yet...it felt so right. Her brain was still trying to catch up to her new reality.

Yulietta understood bits and pieces of the next set of words the man said. She understood eleven and cherry. Cherry was a fruit. Was her wand made of cherry pits? How odd. Her mind had focused on that she missed part of the information being given to her until herbology was mentioned. Was this wand good at herbology?! HER HEART. This was definitely her wand in that case.

It was until the Wand Man was done speaking that she realized a quill had written it all down. She took the parchment and held it close. She would look up every word in her little translation book if she had to. "Gracias," she said with a smile. Thank you. For being patient with her and showing her kindness.

She looked over at her uncle, the twin in his arms playfully tugging at his beard, when he mentioned he'd explain it all to her at home. With a nod her uncle thanked the Wand Man again and Yulietta returned to his side.

She had a ~wand~.

The time had arrived!

For. Him. To. Get. His. Very. Own. Wand!

Well, him and his sisters. Johnny was excited for the three of them. So very excited that he couldn’t stop urging his parents to hurry over to Ollivander’s. He pushed his curls out of his eyes and allowed his blue-grey gaze to travel over the quaint little shop. Naturally he paused to observe all the boxes that very obviously contained wands. It. Was. Simply. Marvelous. ALL OF IT.

It wasn’t long before his parents ushered him to the wand fitting area where he was almost immediately sprung upon by the measuring tape. It was amid fits of boyish giggles that the tape did its thing. It measured the width of his nostrils, from his forehead to his chin, the length of his entire arm, around his head and finally, the width of his shoulders.

“Was all that really needed?” Johnny asked the tape rhetorically, shaking his head as he skipped off a little distance to await the shopkeeper, and to watch his sisters fall prey to the tape's shenanigans.

Tiffany couldn't believe that they were finally starting school!!! Well not primary school. They were going to learn REAL magic. While getting her wand was a priority, naturally, she was also eager about visiting Flourish & Blotts and the Menagerie. But all in due time as her brother and parents said Ollivander's first. She had definitely been keen to observe too that their mother hadn't been her normal self, but she supposed in due time they'd know what was on her mind even if she HATED her parents keeping secrets from her.

Watching Johnny go first, she waited her turn before stepping up to the fitting area for her own turn. "The wand that chooses me ... won't be affected by if I wear my hair up or down, will it?" But did it matter because if it chose her, it would be her essence and hairstyle shouldn't matter.

Aaron simply held back watching the three children go first into Ollivander's. They were eleven now, and would without them soon enough. He was caught between wanting to make sure they were safe but also wanting them to be independent. And as in just two months they'd have only each other to rely upon, he was going to veer more towards the independent side. If they needed him, he was still here but he didn't want them completely reliant upon him or Laurel.

Ariadne was practically bouncing on their feet as they entered Ollivanders to buy her, Johnny, and Tiff's wands for school. It was so exciting and nerve-wracking. Had it ever happened that a wand hadn't chosen the witch? Aria really hoped not as she awaited her turn in the fitting area, watching as first Johnny, and then Tiffany stepped up to be measured by the tape.

When it was her turn Aria stood very still, and quiet which was a feat for her as the measuring tape worked it's way around her body. Why the tape needed to know the length between her eyebrows, or the width of her nostrils or the width of her mouth was very, very cruious. Eventually though the measuring tape stopped it's shenanigans, and Aria skipped off towards her brother and sister to get to try out wands. "No witch or wizard has left Ollivanders without a wand right?" Ariadne asked with a nervous look back at her daddy.

Laurel stood with her hand in her husband's as she looked on with slightly teary-eyes as her three little kids were getting fitted for their first wands. This was as she knew a milestone in any young witch or wirzards life. Leaning towards Aaron she whispered quietly so her children wouldn't hear. "Shall we tell them the big news after lunch at the leaky or when we get home after all the shopping?"

Thank GOODNESS the day had finally come. Brie had been anticipating this moment from the second she started primary school - the day when she'd get her own wand and learn actual magic instead of the theoretical nonsense she'd been told so far. She'd been most disappointed when her dad told her that part wasn't going away, but at least it would be mixed with everything else now. Which meant maybe school could be more fun. Y'know, in ways other than tormenting her younger siblings on the play yard.

Pushing open the door to the wand shop, she stepped in behind some other prospective purchasers and joined the queue. She wanted to push further up into and skip some of the line, but she could feel her dad's stare in the back of her head that told her he expected her to do exactly that.

While she waited, her foot tapped impatiently against the floor and her arms crossed over her chest. Until the measuring tapes attention seemed to turn to her. Smiling because finally, the small blond opened her arms as the object zoomed around her, taking numbers here and there. Seemed weird and she wasn't quite certain how a neck measurement was going to help, but there was no one around she could vocally question about it - so she would let it slide.

Besides, her attention span was already shifted again anyways to the exciting prospect ahead. In mere minutes (hopefully) she'd be the proud owner of the best wand. She was certain of it.

JT was here at last, finally ready to shop for Hogwarts! His dad wanted to be here with him but he managed to convince his parents to continue shopping elsewhere (and probably go sign people's autographs, the perks of a famous dad). He'd be fine, he didn't want the wrong kind of attention stopping him.

Stepping inside, he could see things were busy as he smiled contently. JT had never been inside here, yet he felt at peace. Comfortable. Surely, his wand was just waiting on him. So he stood at attention once the measuring tape came to do its thing. It kind of tickled as he fought the giggles from erupting.

LAINI SAGE GRACAE-RYANS WAS THE MOST CONFIDENT KID IN ALL OF DIAGON ALLEY AND ALSO OLLIVANDERS.

Why? Well. BECAUSE. Because she had been waiting for this day for her whole entire life (eleven whole years, which is so many to wait for). So despite how much she adored her family (so much, it was totally obvious, ok), she asked (read: demanded) they wait for her outside because she was a big girl and could do this all by herself (though she did keep looking back at the window). From inside the store, she offered her family a hardy wave and--

"HEY!" Poked and prodded by flying measuring tape was so not part of the plan. "Hasn't anyone taught you about consent?" She gave the tape BIG stink eye. She wasn't properly angry though. Laini just wanted the tape to know that she could not be messed with and also that she was deserving of the BEST kind of wand that was made for the most POWERFUL and AWESOME and REALLY COOL WITCHES.

So despite the tapes total disregard for manners and consensual measurement, she did help it out by kicking her foot up to her head and holding it there while it took its measurements (she could hold it like that all day). And (because she was trying to show off to make sure she got the best wand) she also did the splits, which the tape measure kindly noted down numbers for as well. See? Helpful. (And sooooooooo deserving of the best and coolest and most awesome wand that exists). (Did you catch that, Mr. Ollivander?).

If it weren't for her sibcousins, Astrid Harmony Grimaldi wouldn't have cared about going to school at Hogwarts. They were the only reasons why she'd even want to set foot on that place — aside from, well, the curiosity surrounding the castle where the mums and Larky met and the stories the older Grimaldi kids have mentioned to her, and nothing else! Except she was also real excited to get her own wand, finally, and she had been SINGING about her wand fitting day since like 7am at home. She wanted everyone to know it was a special day for her. For the Darling. For Boss Baby. For the cutest and littlest Grimaldi. Her special day. Not that the people at home didn't already know it! She'd rounded up the sibcousins to be there for her today, too. It didn't matter if they were joining her inside the shop or if they preferred pressing their faces against the window to sneak a peek.

Striddy Wand Day should be a national holiday, honestly! Maybe Larky could make that happen. He almost always made things happen.

Stepping into Ollivander's and trying not to look too bouncy-on-the-balls-of-her-feet excitable, Astrid only let go of Cyppy's hand when she finally had to get in line and be measured for her fitting. She had been briefed about the magical measuring tape, so Astrid came prepared and didn't twitch in place when it fluttered around and took the necessary numbers. The length of skirt apparently mattered. The size of her head mattered, and it took a lot in Astrid not to scowl at that. Oh, and her shoe size? Apparently also mattered! Maybe if the tape asked nicely, she'd have shared to it herself. Alas.

With her measurements now recorded, Astrid took a moment to glance at Cyppy. A BIG smile for him and the other siblings who were inside the shop with her. Another tilt of her head towards the window, and she too grinned at Maebry who chose to remain outside.

Astrid was so close to being matched to the greatest wand ever. She could feel it.
