Restaurant Across the Street

Across the street from the entrances to the Ministry of Magic is a restaurant open from noon to 10 P.M. If they've noticed the significant drop in business due to the Ministry not opening on schedule, it is probably a complete mystery to the staff. They have quietly noted to each other the lack of robed characters in the neighborhood, but it's more of an oddity than an observation.

Maybe it would be nice for you to continue dropping in, even if its a bit out of the way. We want the restaurant to stay in business, just in case we manage to get back into the Ministry some day.

Maybe William was feeling nostalgic. Or maybe he just wanted to check out the old Ministry, you know, the PROPER Ministry where had USED to work. But after poking around the toilets he'd previously used as an entrance to work, and finding naught, William realized he was hungry.

Luckily there was a delicious Muggle pizza place just across the road, huh? Seemed pretty empty, too... well, that was something. William would have a whole booth --- and pizza --- all to himself.

Annoyed. That was perhaps the simplest way to describe her current mood. Annoyed.

Emily had hoped there would be some progress with the assessments on the Ministry lockout situation, however she was sorely disappointed. It wasn't even the conditions of their makeshift locations that annoyed her most, though MLE had it pretty well off in comparison to some of the others. But what irked her most, was the lack of work they had. Most of all they had to do was locked up and out of reach, which was an itch in her side that she simply couldn't scratch. Dare she say it? Annoying.

After a quick surveillance of the old Ministry, Emily stopped off across the road for food, it wouldn't do her or her employees any good if she returned to their hole in the ground unfed. Even if things still looked bleak, food would placate her to some extent. Once inside, her hazel eyes panned the room, locking on.. THAT guy. Yes. She would go pester him, ask him about his skirts and whatnot. Merlin knew he sounded more an expert on the matter than her. According to Gavin, he'd even pulled it off rather well, definitely noteworthy.

"Mind if I join you?" she asked, sidling up to his table. He didn't have a choice in the matter, really, and this was evident as she sat.

Right, he'd just placed his order for a crispy cheese and pepperoni thin crust and settled back to chill with a drink. All would be okay, even if he had to go back to work and CLEAN. Yuck. At least he had a pizza. Alllllll to himself.

....or did he. William eyed the brunette sliding in across from him, and took a second to place her face before he replied. Red paint lady. Yeah. MLE'r. Alysson's... boss? Nah, she was too young for that. But she definitely WAS MLE.

"You'll have to get your own pizza," he informed her somewhat suspiciously. Was she following him? MLE people did that, they followed people. Why? He didn't know, he wasn't trouble!!!

Except for that one time, when he'd tried to sneak into the Department of Mysteries.

Emily shrugged, she was capable of feeding herself thank you very much, didn't need charity from him. "Of course," she replied, taking up the menu to have a looksie at her options. It almost irked her that he assumed she wanted pizza, but come to think of it, pizza was exactly what she wanted. Just a slice, or two, none of this whole pizza business. She simply didn't have enough time for that.

Flagging down one of the floor staff, Emily relayed her order making a point of insisting there be no ice in her drink, before turning her attention to the Creatures dude.

"So ..." she started, leaning back against the padded booth, eyes on him. "Come here often?" There was nothing sinister or remotely probing in her question, it was merely her attempt at chitchat. Awkward.

Good. Now that that was settled.... William nearly picked up a menu to pretend-read. He didn't much like the feeling of her creeperdoodle eyes on him. It made him nervous, like she knew something about him that he didn't.

He cleared his throat. Um. That question... that wasn't a cone-on, was it? He raised an eyebrow for a moment but then shook his head. No, don't be silly, William. "I haven't been here since the.... you know...." He tilted his head toward the door, meaning of course their former place of employment.

Struck by a sudden idea, he leaned in toward the MLE woman. She looked important, might know things and things. "Why DID all the entrances close up?" He whispered curiously. "Sabotage?" Maybe INTERNAL sabotage, like from the Department of Mysteries? Hmmmm??

Did she stutter? The look on the mans face told her he seemed to be experiencing some difficulties in comprehending her question. What's with the brow raise, duuuude? Emily returned the look. Two could play at that game. She only lowered her brow when he finally responded. She understood. "Riiiggghht," she mused nodding, not even needing to look in the direction he tilt his head in. "Decided to come and do some snooping?" she asked, amused that he was still in the area, all things considered.

Meeting Creatures dude half way, Emily leaned forward in her seat as well, curious to see what he wanted to get closer to her about. His whispered questions were perhaps a little uninspired, save for that last bit. Smirking, Emily let a pause linger between them before whispering her reply as well. "Your guess is as good as ours... and sabotage... " well, there was no real evidence to suggest it was, but there wasn't anything to say it wasn't either. "... maybe?"

Was it just him or was the MLE chick totally mirroring William's facial expressions? He was tempted to keep the eyebrow up, but.... that would look weird. And he wasn't a weirdo like this lady.

"Eh," he shrugged, neither confirming nor denying his snooping habits. Look what João had started with him.

Maybe?! A maybe was almost as good as a YES, coming from a sneaky MLE'r! "So... does that mean law enforcement is looking into that option...?" He was just asking out of his own curiosity, not necessarily because he was like... going to go to the Daily Prophet with this. And he wasn't expecting any real answers from her anyway. Hah.

Emily nod her head in thanks as she accepted the ice-less cola from the waiter. She was quick to abandon all efforts with the straw, removing it and placing it to the side of the table out of the way. Drink aside, Mr. Creatures had her attention, he was a curious one to be sure. Especially since he was so interested in their efforts. It wasn't any of his business what they were doing.

"Have been since before you all returned," was her casual reply. Because she clearly wasn't the type to sit on her hands and wait for whatever reason. It had been looked into, and was still on the list of possibilities despite the void of information and evidence on the matter.

Nevertheless, she had questions of her own, "How goes the vet clinic?" Did they have much to do? Or were they in need of some mutants to keep themselves entertained? Heh. Mutants. And that reminded her of what Gavin had so kindly shared last year. "We have some rats if you're bored.. I'm sure they'd love to see your skirt, heard it's quite fetching."

Oooooh. touchy, touchy. William had a feeling that question had probably touched a MLE nerve, much like questioning Alysson about her job had done. Were all the law enforcement officer peoples this touchy? He made a soft, "Huh," sound and looked off as though trying to spy his pizza.

Uh huh.

"It..... goes," was William's dull answer. His nose started to crinkle at mention of that place though. "It's filthy. All we've really done is clean." He was not a fan of that, needless to say. "What about you guys?" Where were they again? He might want to come visit his gf, see.

Rats....... "No thanks," Willy shook his head with a firm smile. "I'm a dragon man m'self." A dragon MAN who did NOT wear SKIRTS, thank you. "Hey," he leaned forward again, both palms coming to rest firmly on the table between them, "that was a SARONG and it was a ONE-TIME thing." He gave this MLE chick a stern look. "I do NOT wear skirts. I just happen to look fetching in everything." Thank you very much.

Creatures dude was odd, definitely odd. He made for a decent people watching subject though. So while she sat she watched, even as he peered off in the distance. Wasn't searching for the exits was he? Emily shrugged to herself, leaning back in her seat.

It was going. Excellent, that sounded promising. Emily took a drawn out sip of her cola as he continued on about cleaning and tacky boring stuff. "Mmm, it's going," she supplied the same response, "not a lot to clean though, our site wasn't as much of a disaster as some of the others." And frankly, she rather liked the Underground, it had a certain charm about it. Didn't stop it from being an inconvenience though, especially while transportation hadn't set up their apparition zones yet.

Pity he declined her invite, the rats were pesky enough, an unwelcome distraction. Emily's brows arched sharply. Dragon... did he just say he was a dragon man, in a muggle restaurant. "You're hilarious... such a lunatic," she joked off, on the off chance someone bothered listening in. Clearly though, he wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed. This was only consolidated by his little outburst regarding the skirt, touched a nerve did she? Heh. Emily refrained from rolling her eyes, opting for a subtle smirk instead. "Justify it however you want, it's still a skirt." She would know, being of the female persuasion and all that jazz. Ahem. Call her an expert on the matter by default.

"Where are you guys?" he was forced to ask, since it seemed the MLE lady wasn't going to be very forthcoming with her answers. Yeah, a disaster was one way to describe that vet clinic. He would never take Jack there, not even if the crup was dying and it was the last clinic open on earth!

He narrowed his eyes when she called him hilarious. "I am not," William muttered, a little slow on the uptake. Why did she think he was a.... ohhhh. The Muggles. Right, always consider the Muggles. He'd slipped up in front of law enforcement! What a rookie mistake! William's cheeks were just burning with mild humiliation, as were his now clenched fists.

"It wasn't a skirt," he emphasized again through clenched teeth. "I was rescuing a creature, okay? I probably saved both it AND my boss' life." Rude woman. When was the last time she had saved anyone's life?

Where were they? How curious they didn't already know... did their Department Head not discuss this with them? "It's a short trip down the Underground," she replied, placing emphasis on the obvious. "The Northern Line in fact." Or at least, the unfinished and abandoned node of it. So you know, if he got bored of cleaning, they had rats. Rats trumped cleaning, did they not?

Again with the protesting? Emily was beginning to think this one was not only dramatic but also high maintenance. Pffffttttt. "Mmhhmmm..." she mumbled, surveying the restaurant for the food. She wanted out of here. That blushing thing though, real cute. Sure. Seeee, had she been going for dramatics, she'd insist she just saved his butt from a stake burning, but those were out of fashion anyway. Shame. If the red face wasn't enough, then the clenched fists sure added to his childish behaviour. She smiled. HA!
"Anger is very unbecoming... you should learn to keep a cool head, I did." By all means, why was he letting her otherwise insignificant words get to him? Hhmmm? As far as he was concerned, she was a nobody.

"If you say so." Again, she was still amused. It was a skirt, it had no leg holes, it was flowy and according to Gavin, dolphin print.. that most definitely sounded skirt-like to her. Sarong was merely a fancy-pants term for it.
"But, are you always this uptight?" she asked, eyes on the waiter that was approaching their table.

Aha, the Underground! He had heard of that place. It was... yeah... uh... London. Muggle transport. Chyeah. "Cool. Maybe I'll come visit sometime." Not that he would visit THIS creeperdoodle, he'd definitely be visiting Alysson, duhhhhhhhh.

Just look at how she was antagonizing him. William's mouth twitched into a frown, though he did keep his fists on the table where she could see them. "You kept a cool head about what? I didn't barge in to your table and then start making insinuations about your gender." Not that he was at all threatened by her little... skirt-chasing.... stuff. Not at all. It was just irritating when she didn't want to believe the whole heroic story!

"Are you always this annoying?" William cracked a smirk at her and slid back in his seat. Pizza was on its way over, he could see it now. He could smell it now.

Maybe he'd come to visit? It didn't sound as though he would be fixing their rat problem... visiting, sounded social. "So long as you make yourself useful and stay out of the way, you're welcome to stop by any time." See, there were terms and conditions for such visits, simply because visiting implied inconveniently interrupting normal work schedules. Tsk tsk tsk.

Angry pants into frowny pants, she was too right in thinking he was an excellent specimen to people watch. This was perhaps her most amusing lunch break in some time. Well worth it. Her smile extended into a grin as he accused her of barging and insinuating things about gender. She did nothing of a sort. "I didn't call you a girl, so quite being a drama queen." Heh. It was too easy to tease, far too easy. But alas, she ought to exercise some control and be nice to him if she were to indeed share his table. "Sorry, but you walked right into that one."

She took another sip of her drink while the waiter finnaaalllyyy presented their food. Honestly, how hard was it to make pizza? Even her attempts weren't half bad, not to mention it was quicker than this service. In all fairness though, she was the type to rush, so the time it took was probably normal if not better. Emily mumbled a quick thank you before turning back to the gentleman across from her, still waiting for an answer. The question she received in return though, now that, that was funny. Chuckling lightly, Emily bobbed her head from one side to the next, neither agreeing nor disagreeing. "It happens," she concluded.

"Stay out of the way of what? The rats?" William half-chuckled in reply. Look at that, that was almost a warm reception from this MLEr. So unusual for that surly bunch.

His eyes narrowed at her yet again as she now called him a queen before he realized... this was her MO. She deliberately pushed buttons and got some sort of... sadistic? creepy? weird? kick out of the person's reactions. AHHHH. HAAAAA. So he might not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but she wasn't the most normal, either. And he wasn't going to give her any of her weird satisfaction by hulking out again.

"Yeah, okay," William rolled his eyes at her and muttered a thanks to the server. He then grabbed a plate to start serving himself his pizza. He focused on the ooey gooey, hot and yummy cheese for a while before replying again in between bites. He did enjoy folding his pizza slice in half like a burrito and eating it that way. Mmmmmmmmmm. Now he wasn't so grumpy.

And she wasn't either, apparently. "How old are you anyway," he eyed her up as he wiped his hand on the napkin in his lap. "Like... eighteen? Twenty-two?" That would explain her immaturity somewhat.

Oh HA HA. So funny he was. Emily kept her casual expression, but there was a slight brow raise for a brief second or two. "Out of my employees way," she corrected. Mmhhmm. "Visiting for work matters is acceptable enough, but if it's social... make sure it's in their break time, not just yours." She had a Department to run, and she would not stand for slacking, irrespective of their current circumstances. Bad habits were learned through experience, give them an inch, and they'd run a mile. Not. Happening.

No tantrum? But there was that look. Touchy touchy. Indifferent to the mans feelings or opinions, Emily tucked into her slice, taking it up with both hands and biting off the end of it. Food, was something she could appreciate no matter the company, so this experience was in no ways a loss.

Lowering her glass back to the table after washing down a second bite with some drink, Emily turned her hazel eyes to Creatures man. How old was she? Why was it any of his business? "You flatter me," she mused after swallowing. "Twenty-seven actually, yourself?" The number five came to mind.

Oh right, out of her valuable employees' way. William kept his amusement to just a smirk. "Of course, Ms...." Wait, had she just implied that the MLErs were her employees? Nooo.... no way, she was way too young to be THE Emily, the boss of his girlfriend.

He peered at her a little more closely. "You're not named Emily by any chance, are you?" William was careful to keep the tone light and casual. He was actually kind of terrified of MLErs, especially big bad boss ones. What if she really HAD been following him?!! What if they knew about the dragon egg he had snuck into the country a few years ago?!

He needed to shove some more pizza in his face to calm himself. Twenty seven?! She was only twenty seven? Well psssshhh, there was no way she was the boss in that case. William chuckled a little as he finished off a slice of pepperoni and picked up another. "I'm 36. But you wouldn't know it from looking at me, eh?" *nervous chuckles*

Excellleeenntt... she took that of course to mean he understood her message loud and clear and would not interfere with the running of her Department. Distractions could be all sorts of nasty and confusing not to mention limiting. Her staff and Department had potential much greater than what they were currently achieving, and she would foster their growth. It surprised her that he didn't know who she was. Didn't all staff know the Department Heads? ...

She'd been about to interject with a lazy introduction, but he seemed to be connecting the dots now. Interesting. "Indeed it is... Emily Browne at your service," she mused, raising her slice to him before taking another bite. He could stop looking at her so closely now, yep, he could. "I don't suppose you could introduce yourself too?" She wouldn't object to calling him Creatures Man... but it was somewhat limiting and should she need to make reference to him later, a name would be far more appropriate.

Emily sipped her drink as he chucked, hiding her own amused smile. Odd one, he was. As for him being thirty-six... she could see it, in the way that his face was mature. "Mmm... sure, I could never have picked it," she played along. Egos were such fragile things. She'd perhaps done enough damage for one day. No need to go deflating whatever was left of his shiny bubble.

Ohhhhhh dear. It WAS Emily Browne. THIS WAS Emily Browne. William swallowed the suddenly cold lump of pizza in the back of his mouth and hastily reached for his drink. He needed a sip, a long, cold sip. Shooooot. He'd just gotten mouthy with the Department Head of Magical Law Enforcement. The word force was in her job title. Shootshootshootshoot!

He did his best to maintain a cool exterior and let out a small cough when he put his drink down. "Yeah, uh, William Williamson." He wiped his hand on his jeans and then offered it to her politely, across the table. "Sorry about earlier, I mean... I uh..." The pink was coming back into his cheeks. "I make the best worst first impressions?" He really, truly did. DANGIT. He'd been hoping to get in good with the MLE people, just because he fancied himself a bit of a detective.

Well there went that.

He sighed a little as he could tell she was playing along and picked up another piece of pizza. Welp, nothing to do but finish it off now. "Your hide and seek presentation was pretty good," he tried to play nice as he munched the pizza dutifully. "Fun training." For once.

Emily noticed the lump in his throat as he swallowed, and then the drinking. She was beginning to think Creatures Dude had no idea who she was, so... surprise! .. and shock? Was he in shock? If so it was a good thing he was eating and drinking. Get those sugars into him, yep. Distracting herself with her own food and drink, Emily occasionally peered up to see if he'd processed things yet.

And oh goody. A name. "William Willamson ..." she repeated, nodding - committing it to memory. Super original name. Kudos to his parents, yep. Casually wiping her own hand on her pants she extended hers to accept his shake, giving it a measured squeeze before letting go and returning to her food. Emily waved him off while downing her bite. "Forget it, I was messing with you anyway," she was hardly one to talk. "And as far as first impressions go, I've witnessed much worse." Much much worse... as much as she thought William to be a knucklehead, he wasn't all bad. He was an interesting character and was tolerable too - or else she'd have removed herself from his company by now.

What amused her more, was how he recalled her from the presentation. Hadn't that been enough to tell him who she was? "Glad you enjoyed it... I'm not one for teaching, but instruction isn't too bad ... the game was an attempt to make it an engaging experience. Some find it more preferable to standard lecture and demonstration activities." Some, not all. Personally she would have opted for that, had Aron not suggested hide and seek. The selling point for her was being able to sneak around and mark her ~~victims~~targets beforehand.

Well.... at least she was shaking his hand. Really? She'd witnessed worst first impressions? That had William cracking a small grin. "Nuh uh," he bantered playfully. "I can be really, really awkward, I assure you. Just look. My face," he gestured at his reddened cheeks, "is like to change colors like... like a stop sign." That was the Muggle thing they used at their intersections, right?

But he did nod as she elaborated on the presentation. "It was better than any class I took at Hog...school." Whew, caught that one. "Except for maybe... Creatures." She knew what he meant. He was a DRAGON MAN as he'd already bragged. "You almost had me wondering if there was a wild, biting spider on the loose in there." With her little red dots? Yeahhhhhh.

It was a wonder William hadn't inspired the muggles into an anti-magic revolution already, because with a mouth like his, she found it difficult to fathom that the Statute of Secrecy was achieving anything. His mouth would be their downfall... one day. It would only take one person to believe he worked with dragons, and then all would crumble. But it was a compliment nonetheless, and she'd take it... silently. The wild biting spider bit got her brows arching before she realised what he was talking about. Heh. "And who's to say there were no wild, biting spiders? Hhhmmm?" For all he knew, there could have been.

Yeah what, WHAT, why was she looking at him like that? He'd done a ~~semi-~~ good job of editing himself for her! He was getting better! He just couldn't help his pureblood, wizardy status. Whups. "Well I mean, I'd recognize them, right? If there had been any?" He pulled another sip of soda. "'S'my job to catch spiders and the like." WWW wasn't afraid of no spiders. ~~Just their itchy bites.~~

He had the wrong end of the stick though, she hadn't heard anything about his legs and hadn't broached the topic of seeing him in a skirt either, she was merely passing comment. "You're not my type," she added, after a careful once over of him across the table. Nope. Not her type at all.

He'd have recognised them? And here she thought the Dragon Man was too good for boring mundane creatures like wild, biting spiders and rats.. tsk tsk tsk. Such a mixed bag he was. "Suppose... and it's a real shame you don't do rats." This was said with a solemn expression before she helped herself to more drink.
