Default Surviving Suburbia

Everybody loves Hogwarts.
Students couldn’t be prouder of the beloved castle they get to call home for most part of the year, and those unfortunate enough not to receive an invitation, dream of racing the moving staircases and finding secret passageways behind talking portraits.
Enchanting as it may be, Hogwarts remains, above all: a school. Which means that Hogwarts students don’t necessarily spend all their time at the castle joking with nearly-headless ghosts, sneaking into forbidden forests, or enjoying a cup of hot chocolate by the fireplace. Like any other student at any other school, magical or otherwise, they have their fair share of responsibilities: homework to get done, tests to study for, grades to improve. Overall, Hogwarts students tend to be hard-working, smart individuals who surpass challenges set by each and every lesson, moving on to higher levels.
There are, however, those classes that are just IMPOSSIBLE for some to pass. And for some Hogwarts students the main culprit tends to be:
Muggle. Studies.

These students can perform a perfect patronus, handle a crying mandrake, predict your untimely demise in a teacup, but they simply can NOT figure out the workings of a “TV remote” no matter how many times they press all the bloody buttons. It looks just like a tel-uh-phony, what is even the point of this thing!? GAHHH.
For these students, a special summer lesson has been put together by Professor Willoughby, Hogwarts’ one and only Muggle Studies master. These students failed all exams and either didn’t turn in their homework, or turned in something that made no more sense than a two-headed dog with chicken legs and fire breath. If these students don’t want to end up repeating the class next term (and I’m more than certain they don’t), they MUST pass the summer lesson, which, in consequence, will take up a good half of their summer break.

So, what is Professor Willoughby’s challenge?
Surviving one month in suburbia.

The worst Muggle Studies students in every House and every year must pack their belongings (without the help of magic) and move to a standard, uniformed suburban home in the middle of a friendly muggle neighbourhood in the outskirts of London. Doesn’t sound too bad, does it? Well, there’s a catch: the students must give up their wands to Professor Willoughby at the end of term, and they may only retrieve them after successfully completing all challenges set up by the professor. So, absolutely no magic can be performed during the entire month the students spend in this home, performing their daily tasks without the aid of their wands. They must learn to live life… the muggle way.

It’s not all so bad, though. The house is large and comfortable, there’s a pool in the backyard, they get a mini van to drive around, and there’s other youths in the neighbourhood. Just next door is a house occupied entirely by muggle university students, who our muggle-challenged witches and wizards must interact with without raising any suspicion to complete some of their tasks. If they’re nice enough, they could maybe even get the muggles to perform some of these tasks for them. …Long as they’re not caught by the Professor’s pet assistant. There will be one student, the best student, in fact, who is already familiar with all things muggle and will be in charge of making sure that all tasks are completed by his classmates. Should anyone be caught cheating, this student will be in charge of reporting them to Professor Willoughby, and they may permanently lose their wand in consequence.

To help the students stay on track and remember all the tasks they must complete, a chalkboard has been set up in the living room area of the home. Here, the professor’s assistant has listed all the tasks the students must complete, in the order they must be performed. Also, all students have been equipped with the muggle version of a wand - a cellphone. Each cellphone is activated with its own phone number and the students are free to use them as they please, the more they play around with the gadget and experience first-hand muggle technology, the better! But please do try to take it easy on the selfies.

And so, girls and boys… welcome to suburbia! Have fun and try not to get electrocuted by that tricky muggle invention - electricity!

Hello everyone!
So, since the general RP section of the site is pretty dead, The Amazing Ru (pinecone) and I have decided to start something new that will hopefully get more members involved in RPs outside of the school!
If you’re interested in joining, please just post a bio for your character(s) and we’ll add them to the list below!
You may RP students, muggles, or both. Ru and I will be taking care of the professor and his assistant (we may or may not have some surprises in store for you… ). You may also bring in any necessary extras if a certain scene asks for it, the more realistic we make this, the better! If you have any ideas of extra characters you’d like to add in besides the students and their muggle neighbors, tell us! Want to be a gardener that’s onto them? A thief that breaks into the house at night? A troublesome child that rings the bell and runs away!? ALL CHARACTERS ARE WELCOME. BE CREATIVE!

And for your reference, here is a shot of the board listing all the kids’ challenges. Below is a link to see a larger version.

Please remember to follow all SS rules while RPing, and, most of all, don’t forget to have FUN!!!

“Alright.” Allegra nodded as Adam agreed to talking. Good. She watched expectantly as he sat up, as though he were about to put on a one man show that she had no need to participate in. She blinked like something would just happen before her eyes, some miraculous cure-all few words exchanged that would fix everything — like ripping off a band aid. As she slowly remembered she’d have to fully participate in this open dialogue of exposed vulnerability and conversation, her expression went pale. They’d never done this, really. All of their past brushes with open and honest communication had been… Less than newsworthy. Even in the midst of talking they were often still closed off from each other, avoiding the heart of what was wrong, struggling to be direct. She was hoping to avoid that this time.

She smiled weakly, the silence growing. She had asked for this, so… she should say something first. But what? She blinked, hesitant. “Maybe we could talk about…” She paused, evaluating him momentarily. ‘Gabe kissing me and starting all of this?’ ‘Our deep and tangled trust issues?’ Ugh.

“Everything that… happened.” Starting slow seemed like a wise decision.

Had this been under any other circumstances, Adam would’ve almost laughed at the obvious hesitance and awkwardness on their expressions. Allegra seemed to be under the impression that he would begin the conversation, while he merely sat there silently, waiting for her to begin. Once the silence dragged on for too long, the boy opened his mouth to say something, anything, when fortunately Allegra cut in with a general suggestion.

Everything that happened. Right.
Adam had to resist the urge to crawl under the covers, suggest they talk about it tomorrow, and fall into a deep, soothing sleep. Instead, he nodded his head slowly. Where could they even begin? So many things had happened in just the last week alone. The infamous kiss, the unanswered notes, the hurtful words.

“Okay… alright,” the Slytherin spoke with unwilling determination, nodding his head again and turning his body slightly, so that he was better facing Allegra rather than just sitting next to her facing the pictures box. He felt like a first year student walking to the front of the class to speak on a subject he had done no research on, mortified but with no escape plan. “The kiss,” Adam decided, his gaze dropping to the sheets before meeting Allegra again. God, he really hated this. “I…” He looked back on that night, on Allegra’s horrified expression when Gabe suddenly burst into the scene with the infamous ’we kissed, okay?’ “I overreacted, I’m sorry. Truth is…” He couldn’t hold her gaze anymore, and in an effort to hide looked away to the moving pictures box instead. “I believed you. Not entirely, and not immediately, but… I didn’t not believe you for the whole week.” He knew it made no sense, especially given his past behaviour, so he continued, “This… this is going to sound terrible, childish, even. But… I think I just—I was upset about… other things, and I just wondered—I questioned, would you walk away if I actually gave you a reason to this time?” He paused, absentmindedly watching the intro to the movie that had just begun playing in the muggle box, the one Allegra had already watched before. He noticed some of the faces looked familiar, perhaps he’d already seen it too. “It’s stupid, I know, I… I don’t know what I was thinking, I’m sorry.” As much as he tried, there was simply no easy way to explain his behaviour. All along, he felt the self-sabotage, saw the stupidity his friends tried desperately to point out, but it had spiraled out of control, it was as if he’d become obsessed with finding Allegra’s breaking point, so that he could finally, truly, have a reason to say I knew it, I knew you wouldn’t stay. Even now, he wasn’t sure if he felt relieved to have failed.

Poor Adam must have felt truly under the microscope because, of course, Allegra was staring at him with merciless interest behind her eyes. Once again she was managing to resemble some animated forest creature, her large eyes filled with hesitant fascination as Adam decided to start with the kiss. She nodded, wondering vaguely if he intended on her defending herself once again, but soon found herself pleasantly surprised as Adam chose to elaborate. Well, sort of. She listened with furrowing brows as Adam sort of explained what had been going on, his eyes soon abandoning her own for the moving pictures box.

It was difficult to follow along. He didn’t…not believe her about the kiss? What did that mean? Allegra shook her head, completely behind but tentative to pop this little bubble of sudden communication that didn’t involve yelling. He was apologizing but she still didn’t quite understand what exactly he was apologizing for. She knew he had things he should have been sorry about, but he seemed to be throwing out his remorse left and right and she wasn’t quite sure where to assign it.

“Hold on,” Allegra started, clearly still trying to process all of this. “What…” She stared at the side of his expression as he looked away from her, suddenly feeling a spark of disdain at the attention the amount of attention the moving pictures box was getting. She tried to ignore it. “What do you mean — a reason to walk away?”

Adam sighed, one tattooed hand brushing over his expression, revealing as it passed the exhaustion and discomfort merely talking brought on. “I mean that exactly,” he replied, furrowing his brows but still staring at the pictures box. “What I’m saying is—I guess I was pushing you away,” he explained rather bluntly.

“Oh.” Allegra blinked. He was pushing her away? Well, if that was his intent, he had certainly been doing a good job of it. She processed this for a long minute, getting lost in her own thoughts which seemed to grow more and more confusing by the second. “Why would you…” She paused, thinking, before coming to a logical conclusion. “You want me to go away?” She was a generally bright girl but not necessarily in these circumstances — feelings and emotions, that wasn’t her territory. She couldn't read his mind.

And why was he still staring at the muggle pictures box?

“What?” Finally, Adam tore his gaze from the box to stare at Allegra incredulously instead. “No! What—why—of course not, Moon.” How could she even think that?! …I was pushing you away. Perhaps because that was exactly what he said a minute ago. Realizing the fact that he was making absolutely no sense, Adam moved closer to the girl, hesitation in his movements though there was an obvious desire to provide some sort of comfort as well. “I pushed you away because I’m an idiot, alright?” he explained unhelpfully. Couldn’t he just apologize and then they just leave it at that? Why did he have to go over every tiny detail of his mistakes, of his irrational behaviour? But, just one look at Allegra’s puzzled expression, Adam understood how that wouldn’t be fair. She didn’t need his apologies. She needed to understand why the person she trusted had suddenly become some sort of bully in the past week.

But this wasn’t an easy thing to explain. How could he make sense of an idea that didn’t make sense in the first place? It was like trying to stop a fire by throwing wood into the flames. He reached out, taking one of her small hands into his own. Absentmindedly playing with her fingers, he found a new distraction to keep his gaze away from her eyes as he spoke, “I was pushing you away because I knew—or I thought I knew—you’re leaving. Maybe not that night. Maybe in a few weeks, or a few months, I don’t know. But I just… I suppose I just wanted to—in a way, I was kind of… I don’t know, making sure that when it happened it would make sense? That… when you left, I wouldn’t wonder why. I’d already know why. And that would make it alright.”

Allegra struggled with his words. Everything he was saying seemed to contradict what he said just a moment ago, and things weren’t getting any more clear. It was only as he started playing with her hand that his statements began to string together in a way that made sense contextually but still seemed completely illogical to her.

“What makes you so certain I’m going to leave?” The question fell from her lips before she had time to really think about it, honestly confused. And then, just a split second after hearing her own words, she seemed to realize in one horrible fell swoop. She had done it before, after all. Her gray eyes fell to their hands, suddenly unable to meet his gaze either.

Adam looked up from their hands just as Allegra did the opposite, her own gaze falling. He smiled faintly, reading the understanding on her features. “Why should I be certain you won’t?” he replied, not as an accusation but a gentle reminder. He wasn’t saying any of this to make her feel guilty about anything. He was the idiot, the one who jumped into conclusions and refused to move on from a past mistake. It still hurt and it would take some serious dedication from his part to move past it, but guilt-tripping Allegra certainly wasn’t the point. She’d apologized, explained herself, planned their reunion, done her part. It was him who wasn’t collaborating.

“I’m sorry,” he said softly, wrapping the hand he held in his own and bringing it up to place a kiss on her knuckles. “For this, for everything… I know—I know everything I’ve done says the opposite, but… I really don’t want you to go. Though…” He paused, hesitant. “I mean—well, you’ve got reason now, so… If you want to go, I understand.” At least this time he’d done something to deserve it.

Allegra looked like she was in some kind of a trance, her gaze determinedly set on their joined hands, silent. She knew it would come up, but it still hurt to hear him say the words. How could he be certain she wouldn’t leave? There it was. The doubt he had of her, of her intentions… The guilt sat comfortably on her shoulders, familiar now. She became so distracted with it that for a moment, she almost didn’t hear his apology. It was only as she felt a gentle kiss on the back of her hand that she seemed to wake up, barely meeting his eyes before registering all of the jumble that was coming out of his mouth.

“What?” She almost laughed, in the same moment feeling as though she might cry. “Adam…” She shook her head, not even knowing where to begin. And then she stared at him, just like she used to when they first met. Merciless, never-ending attention with pure curiosity behind her eyes. She might have been quiet for the better part of a minute before her words returned to her. “I made a mistake.” It was that simple. “It was not… the first incident in a continuous pattern of events. It was a mistake.” She suddenly felt uncomfortable, stagnant, like sitting here wasn’t enough to process her emotions and she reluctantly untangled herself from Adam, standing up and beginning to pace just in front of where he sat. How could she explain this to him? She wasn’t particularly good with words, either, in case we’d all forgotten. And digging back into this very dumb decision she’d made was even harder.

“I am so… in love with you, it’s actually infuriating.” Allegra sort of yelled it rather than saying it softly, her light eyes distressed as she turned to him and faltered. She smiled weakly, realizing how odd that must have sounded, still marching through her determined pacing with a sigh. “I don’t want to be away from you! I want to be with you, all the time.” She explained this as though it were some kind of ailment she had to burden, as though she were surprised to find herself here. “And it’s the most frustrating thing that I’ve ever experienced in my life because, in case you didn’t realize, I’ve never had anything like you before and I’m not particularly good at discussing my feelings, and I got scared one time and made a mistake and I learned from it because I tried to be away from you and I was absolutely destroyed for weeks because I kept thinking about you and the way you look at me and how you kiss the back of my hand and how I feel when I’m around you and every day I just felt worse and worse because I kept thinking about how I should have been with you and all the things we could have been doing together and all the plans we could have been making and… and…” She turned to him, a familiar pout set in on her clearly distressed expression as she ran out of steam.

“And even this week…” She hesitated, overwhelmed. “I hated how you spoke to me, and the things you said to me hurt more than anything because you were the one saying them.” She paused, almost embarrassed over her own attachment to him. “But all the while, I still kept thinking about how much I missed you.” Her voice got a bit wobbly and she instantly resented it, crossing her arms over her chest. “It’s infuriating, and insane, and I have no idea why, but you can’t push me away no matter how hard you try because I am so stupidly in love with you, I may never recover.” Allegra seemed almost angry with this fact. “You’re stuck with me, alright?”

Panic flashed over Adam’s expression as Allegra suddenly abandoned his side and got to her feet. For a moment he thought she might just burst out of the room, but instead she began pacing. His gaze traveled left and right, following her movement and listening carefully to the avalanche of words that escaped her lips. His brows furrowed, his mind struggling to keep up with her words and expressions and tones. Her message was reassuring, she obviously wanted to be with him, but it was like the mere fact aggravated her, tormented her more than anything else.

Adam’s gaze dropped, guilty, as she reminded him of the hurtful words he’d spoken this past week. He looked up with her final words, eyebrows raised with a mix of confusion and amusement and admiration for the girl standing across the room. He was silent for a long moment, unsure what to say, what to even think.

“Alright,” he finally said, voice barely audible over the sound of the moving pictures box. It took the boy a moment to remember how much Allegra hated one-word answers, especially when she’d just given him an entire book. “I mean, I understand… I think,” he added cautiously.

Silence settled upon them, made only slightly less noticeable by the excited chatter of the characters inside the pictures box. Adam watched Allegra for a long moment, debating what to say, what to do, how to even respond to everything she said. He couldn’t even feel relieved about her feelings for him when they looked like this - like a punishment, like a chain holding her onto something that had become frustrating and undesirable. Putting his caution and hesitation aside, Adam got to his feet and walked over to the girl that stood with her arms crossed. Gently, he reached for her wrist and took a couple steps back, blindly sitting back down on the edge of the bed. He pulled Allegra down with him, onto his lap, and moved his fingers from her wrist to her hand instead. “I’m stupidly in love with you too,” he confessed, placing a kiss to her temple. “And I’d be honored to be stuck with you, if that’s alright,” he added, placing another kiss to her cheek.

Allegra allowed herself to be moved easily, watching with wary eyes as Adam sat back down and pulled her cozily onto his lap. She didn’t know what she expected him to say because quite honestly, she hadn’t anticipated saying all of that in the first place and it more resembled a jumble of words and feelings rather than a proper confession of love. She looked away, a faint pout still evident on her expression, mildly embarrassed until she felt a warm kiss on her temple and found herself successfully pulled back into the world of Adam Kipling. She listened to his words, hope evident on her exhausted expression.

“Are you sure?” She squeezed his hand gently. “Because I get it. If you don’t want…” How had the tables turned so suddenly? “If you still haven’t forgiven me, I’d understand. If you wanted to…” She trailed off, at a loss for words. “If you needed some time, for yourself, I can wait.” She had already established that despite the unresolved issues of the week, there was ultimately no changing her feelings for him, but if he needed to be away from her for a while… “I’ll be here.”

Adam smiled faintly and shook his head, his gaze dropping to their entwined hands. “I’m sure. Definitely,” he assured her, meeting her gaze again. He paused for a moment, taking in the features that had stood so far from him for so long. It felt ages since he’d last seen Allegra this close. “But… I think you’re right.” He sighed softly, gaze dropping once more. He didn’t want to say this, he didn’t want to go along with it at all, but if anything had become clear in the past week, it was definitely that the boy needed some time. To figure out what it was exactly that he wanted out of his relationship with Allegra, to face the fact that no, he wasn’t over their breakup after all. “I think it would be good… for me to, I don’t know, take a moment to figure things out. I mean—I know, with all certainty, that I want to be with you.” His hand slipped from her own to begin playing with her fingers absentmindedly, the way he did when he needed a distraction while gathering his thoughts. “There’s nothing I want more than that. Than you. But I need to get my head straight first.” His fingers paused and he looked up, meeting her gaze with a small, guilty smile.

Allegra had offered it, and meant her offer, but it still stung a bit to hear her favorite person confirm that he did, after all, need some time away from her. She'd braced herself for it but it still hurt, only helped slightly by his warm assurances that he wanted to be with her. She could only hope that this time apart would further confirm that, rather than place doubt in his mind. She'd have to be a complete ego maniac not to panic, just a little bit, that perhaps this time apart would give him enough room to realize that he didn't want to be with her, after all. Still, she kept this insecurity to herself, knowing it wouldn't be fair to vocalize this and make him feel bad about what he needed to do.

"I understand," Allegra assured him with a nod, her free hand coming up to absentmindedly stroke his jaw, gently keeping him with her face to face. There was still something bothering her. "I don't want you to..." She paused, unsure how to say this. She didn't want to leave this Gabe situation unresolved, and at the same time she wanted to completely avoid the subject now that she was so comfortable in his arms. "I don't want you to spend the time apart thinking I might be with someone else."

Adam’s smile transformed from guilty to grateful with Allegra’s understanding, his eyes closing momentarily as he felt her fingers against his jaw. He opened them again when she spoke, mentioning how she didn’t want him to spend his time away from her thinking she was with someone else. His brows furrowed thoughtfully, considering her words for a few moments of silence. “I don’t want to think that either,” he finally admitted softly, thoughtfulness still clouding his gaze as he gathered the words carefully in his mind before speaking them, “So I’ll just have to trust you, won’t I?” He offered her another smile, still hesitant, still heavy with exhaustion and guilt and an infinite amount of thoughts, but also filled with determination. And though he spoke lightly, it wasn’t easy to willingly separate from Allegra. To stop worrying about Gabe. To stop worrying about a possible, future breakup. To not believe that she, too, may have second thoughts when she sees how much easier and calmer life could be without him. But, if they were to fix all the cracks that threatened to shatter their relationship, he’d just have to deal with that.

Allegra's solemn expression cracked into a genuine, lighter-than-air smile as Adam decided, quite simply, that he'd have to trust her. "That would be nice," she agreed softly, the concern still evident behind her gaze as she evaluated him for a long moment. She didn't want to press it, she didn't want to get into it at all, in fact, but she couldn't stand the idea that he still considered this a possibility. "I don't want anyone else," she confessed, her voice barely above a whisper. She felt stupid saying it - vulnerable, embarrassed, even after that rambling speech from a few minutes ago. But she wasn't exactly known for being open about her feelings and she didn't want to mess this up by being vague or unclear, even accidentally.

“Me either,” Adam replied softly, leaning in to place a kiss on Allegra’s cheek. He was silent for a moment, analyzing the girl before him in that way that she often did to him, with curiosity and undertones of admiration. Despite having finally talked, things didn’t feel perfect. He still felt heavy with guilt, uncertainty, even some frustration with the overall situation. But, at least he could accept this time something that he should have considered over a month ago - that things took time to fix, and wounds took time to heal. He wasn’t going to take a short break from his favourite person and return as some perfect, flawless prince charming. But he’d return a better person. A more trusting boyfriend, a more understanding friend. The type of person Allegra deserved.

“Anyway,” said Adam suddenly, a bit delayed in his comeback, “I doubt you’d find anyone who likes Arctic Mermaids as much as I do. And let’s face it, you’re only here for my extensive band t-shirt collection,” he accused playfully, poking the girl’s tummy as he pointed to the incriminating logo on the oversized t-shirt Allegra happened to be wearing at that moment.

Allegra looked down at her own outfit as though she’d forgotten what she was wearing — which she had. Her face flushing with color, she promptly dove back under the covers, escaping Adam’s embrace reluctantly. For a moment, it seemed as though Allegra was truly ending their conversation, until she reached out and grabbed his arm, unceremoniously toppling him back towards her. “That’s not why I’m here,” she complained, successfully stealing him back into her arms with a sheepish smile. There were few things Adam liked more than properly teasing her, and after the week they’d had, it felt almost close to normalcy. “Are you going to need it while you’re gone?” she teased, as though he were leaving on some round-the-world trip rather than simply taking time away from her. Ironically, that was how it felt.

Adam laughed as he suddenly found himself dragged into the covers by tiny, determined hands. “Oh? Are you sure?” he asked as Allegra complained, his eyebrows raising playfully. Having the girl so close again, acting this adorably, he couldn’t stop his blue eyes from sparkling with admiration. God, he’d missed her. Them. Like this, silly and a little goofy. When she asked if he would need the shirt while he was gone, the smile that had returned to his face faltered. Suddenly, his brows furrowed and his expression became comically puzzled. “What, do you think I’m going off to China or something?” he asked, half teasing. His arms traveled blindly beneath the covers, finding Allegra’s waist and pulling her closer. “I’m not literally going away, y’know…” He paused, evaluating her expression. “I still want to talk with you… I know I’ve been lousy at writing back, but you’ll still send notes, won’t you?” Ironically, now he was the one making it sound like he was leaving the country.

Allegra laughed as he accused her of assuming he was going halfway around the world, but struggled to keep up the playful atmosphere as larger concerns took over her thoughts. What exactly was this separation going to be like? Her smile attempted to sustain itself with his teasing words but faltered ultimately as he wondered if she would be sending him notes. So he wanted to hear from her, but he didn’t want to see her? She was finding it difficult to understand the exact purpose of this separation, primarily because she desperately didn’t want it to happen. She’d already done this, and she didn’t like it. What was going to be the difference between this week and the next? No more fighting, but she’d still be waiting anxiously for a note to appear on her bedside table?

“Oh, so you’re still going to talk to me?” She meant it as a tease, but the words came out sharper than intended. Allegra offered up a weak smile, trying to keep it light but failing, surprising even herself. What was wrong with her? Couldn’t she just play along, have fun while he was still here?

Adam seemed slightly taken aback by Allegra’s response at first, then smiled sympathetically. Of course this was no more pleasant for her to hear than it was for him to go through with. “Well, I mean… I don’t think it would be healthy for us to completely stop talking either,” he explained softly. “Especially… after graduation. I’d still like to know that you made it home alright. That you’re… I don’t know, reading, or drawing… whatever you do at home.” His mind had been more on the first week of their summer vacation, when they’d each be at their own homes and separation was inevitable. “I guess what I’m trying to do is… give us more breathing room? Not a complete separation, but just… we don’t have to be together every second? If that makes any sense..."

Allegra did her best to keep her pride out of the picture as her boyfriend delineated the definition of breathing room for her. She understood breathing room, that wasn’t the problem. It was what this breathing room meant, in the long run. She knew he didn’t mean for it to hurt her, but it was hard not to feel a little rejected as he explained that he was basically looking forward to not seeing her so often. How was anyone supposed to take that? She supposed it didn’t really matter, anyway, considering they were preparing to graduate and their separation was imminent no matter what. But in the months prior whenever they had discussed graduation, she had always assumed it would be a difficult goodbye, not a sigh of relief.

She knew it wasn’t fair to be so pessimistic, but hearing all of this, she suddenly felt like this was a break up disguised as time apart. And, sitting there in his Arctic Mermaids t-shirt, after confessing her feelings for him in what she believed to be an embarrassing display of affection, she couldn’t help feeling as though her fear from so long ago was finally coming true. She was here — heart open, hopeful, wide-eyed — ready to get back together and… he needed time. Space. Away from her. Ironically, it was the break up she had attempted to beat him to so long ago. And ironically, that attempt was one of the reasons he needed space now.

All of these thoughts ran through her racing mind, but she kept quiet, a more rational part of her aware that she might have been making too many pessimistic assumptions. Only time would tell. Realizing he had asked her something, Allegra nodded quickly, offering up the flash of a smile. “That make sense.”

Adam analyzed Allegra’s expression carefully, absorbing every detail of it. And though he couldn’t read her mind or the many thoughts racing through it, he could sense her apprehension to this new plan. In a selfish more narcissistic way, he was almost relieved about it. So Allegra wasn’t looking forward to time apart any more than he was. But, the side that cared for her, didn’t feel content with this. He didn’t want to have to make a decision that she wasn’t completely comfortable with, didn’t want her to go along with something just because he had suggested it.

But what else could they do? Obviously jumping right back into normal relationship mode after one of the two, or in this case both, had been badly hurt had already proven itself to be ill-advised. “Babe…” He didn’t like this. They were supposed to be improving, to have made a mutual decision to become a better couple, a better team. And that meant doing something neither of them enjoyed or were very good at: communicating. “Talk to me,” he requested softly, removing one hand from her waist to tuck some of her hair behind her ear instead. “You do know I want to spend every second with you, don’t you? Despite everything… do you know that?” He couldn’t really blame her for believing that he was purposely trying to push her away at this point, his behaviour the past week hadn’t really done anything to disprove that. But certainly she remembered what he’d been like before? Believed that he wouldn’t just change overnight, that the awful person she’d dealt with for the past week was only a temporary intruder in their relationship?

Why was Adam Kipling her personal weakness? As soon as he started speaking, his warm voice suspicious of something else going on in her mind, she couldn’t seem to hold up a facade. Her smile faltered and her gray eyes, moments ago clouded with thought, seemed to grow larger like sparkling silver whirlpools as she met his gaze with her own. There was no hiding from Adam, and as he placed a hand on her face to brush some of her hair back, she leaned against his warm touch comfortably and listened. ‘Talk to me’. What a request. She nodded, her cool hand coming up to the back of his own to secure his place next to her as she processed his words.

“No, I know… I don’t want…” She struggled to find what she wanted to say, her eyes drifting away from him as she tried to communicate. “I don’t need you to want to spend every second with me,” Allegra assured him softly, honestly. She didn’t want him to feel bad but she wasn’t quite sure how to say what she was feeling because she wasn’t even sure what she was feeling herself! What was she supposed to tell him, when she agreed with his decision? There was no point in pretending things were alright, if they weren’t. And if taking time was going to solve that, then perhaps they could both use the space. They didn’t really have any other options.

“I just…” She trailed off, meeting his eyes with her own again. “We just really shouldn’t have gone to that bonfire party.” Allegra cracked a smile, allowing the joke to escape her lips in a whisper. Obviously these problems were underneath all the while; it wasn’t as though attending the party had caused it all and perhaps, in time, they would be grateful for the opportunity to address all of their problems. But she couldn’t help letting out a dark chuckle at the idea that perhaps, if they hadn’t attended, things would be better right now. Allegra leaned her forehead against his own to share a warmer smile and another laugh, softer this time but genuine.

Adam mirrored Allegra’s smile as she spoke of the bonfire, his train of thought somewhere parallel to hers. Perhaps, maybe, if they hadn’t gone… if Gabe hadn’t kissed her… But, also like Allegra, Adam came to the same conclusion: these problems would’ve found a new way to peek to the surface, shattering their illusion of a perfect relationship.

“Well… I think Liam’s got a time-turner somewhere, we could try that?” he offered playfully, pecking her lips. He allowed the gesture to last a moment longer than necessary, his lips gently resting on her own for a few seconds before pulling back, his expression thoughtful. How was it possible to feel simultaneously so relieved but also so uneasy about the present? It was relieving that they were here, like this, closer than they’d been all this past week. But it was an uneasy time, their mistakes too fresh still, the decisions being made not the most pleasant. “I don’t mean to brag, but… I’ve seen couples quit entirely over smaller things, y’know,” he said softly, keeping his tones light. Absentmindedly, his thumb stroked her cheek. “I think… despite everything, we’ve done a pretty decent job at this love thing, don’t you?”

“Time-turner sounds good,” Allegra agreed, returning the gentle kiss he placed on her lips for the few moments it lasted. Her eyes remained closed, listening to his voice quietly as he compared their attempt at love with the rest of the world. She smiled faintly as her eyes finally fluttered open and she focused in on her favorite person. “We’ve done alright,” she agreed softly, a playfulness still there though somewhat subdued. She let the silence fall between them, for the first time in a long time feeling as though it was comfortable and not loaded with unspoken things. And then, before they could get too comfortable, an unspoken thought slipped out of her lips. “Why aren’t you angry with Gabe?”

Allegra looked almost as surprised to say it as he must have been to hear it, fear flashing behind her light eyes, worried she might have just ruined their potential nice evening. But there were still things on her mind, left over feelings from the week that weren’t entirely resolved. Perhaps that wasn’t the goal of this evening, getting to the bottom of it all. But it was about more than just Adam pushing her away — it was about all the things that he used to push her away. These trust issues. Maybe some of it could be solved simply with time passing but there were worries that still distracted her as she tried to enjoy her evening with Adam. She didn’t want to fight or even go back into heavy discussion, but she wanted to know. And ever since it happened, it seemed as though he was only upset with her, not the random guy who decided to kiss her out of the blue.
