| | | Woman determined on Harry Potter ban strikes again
Laura Mallory, a mother from Georgia is determined to continue her efforts to have the Harry Potter books banned from school shelves, even after losing several rulings on this matter. News organisations reports that Ms Mallory has requested an appeal of her case to Gwinnett Superior Court. Quote:
Mallory has said the books should be removed from all Gwinnett County public schools.
Quote:
The state board did not consider the merits of the books in making its decision. Instead, board members were asked to determine whether Gwinnett had properly handled Mallory's complaint. Without discussion, objection or comment, the members upheld the school system's procedure — much to Mallory's chagrin.

The way I see it. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. However, If you are going to say a book promotes "anything" you should at least read the book. If you don't read the book in question then you must be assuming and we know what it means when you assume something. I'll just leave it at that.

this is seriously just silly. most fairy tales from some sort of magical creatures. If she's going to try and ban HP, she might as well try to ban them all!
I think she needs new hobbies as well.

I think she's obviously bored and has nothing better to do, she needs to go out there and do something worthwhile, instead of wasting public time and money with this ridiculous mission of hers!

Her complaint is that the didn't consider the merits of the book prior to making a ruling? That is exactly what she failed to do prior to her complaint.

I still fail to see why people complain about these books. If they don't want their children reading them, then don't let them, but don't take these wonderful books away from other students who enjoy them!

Boy, her persistence is commendable, but I personally think she should actually take the time to read the first book at least. If she does want to, then her persistence should be channeled into something else that's worthwhile.
I'll just leave it at that...

i think that this is one of those situations where everytime someone loses, their resolve to fight on grows stronger. hopefully sometime soon the legal smackdown will be put on her and she wont be able to continue anymore.

The school was worried that the books were teaching "witchcraft" or something, and that the younger students were going to try and do the spells...I don't know. But I say that anyone who reads the Harry Potter books and thinks that Hogwarts and "the boy who lived" really exist should be in a mental hospital, not a library. Well...unless they are a really-really little kid...and I don't know if really-really young kids should read the newer books...I mean, I started reading them when they came out, and now I'm a Senior....(american highscool...blah) And my school has a week called "Banned Book Week" where all banned-books are available...and you can get HP out of the school library...
The thing is HP isn't real Magick, I mean its not witchcraft actually, people who believe it is real witchcraft should read-up on actual witchcraft, like the books by Silver RavenWolf, and other authors of spell/magic/pagan books. I mean, magic is technically card tricks, I mean...for real "magic" its supposed to be magick, and I am a partial pagan/wiccan myself but I'm more quaker, I think that the Harry Potter Books shouldn't be banned. The amount of research that JK Rowling puts into them is tremendous, I mean the whole Lily/Ginny parallel is a complete psychological theory, Actually Sigmund Freud's Psychodynamic Theory, and the whole way that Harry "randomly" kissed Ginny in the common room after the match, was a complete Freudian Slip! JK Rowling has so much detail in the books that is completely and thuroughly amazing, I think that this Lady is a quack if she keeps trying to ban the books without looking at the hidden meanings, the artistry, and the work put into the books!

I seriously doubt she will ever win this battle. The HP books are required reading here in Louisiana in many grade levels. Besides it's FICTION! Hello! There are worse things in life that can corrupt children than a fictional novel.
