| | | Top British illustrator criticises Potter books
Chris Riddle, a top British illustrator, has criticised the Harry Potter books for not having illustrations in them (although the US editions have chapter art, the UK versions do not). Quote:
"Illustrations play an important role in children's literature," said Riddle.
“Children respond to pictures from the year dot. It is a shame they are disappearing from fiction – I find it amazing that Harry Potter isn’t illustrated."
Personally, I like them without illustrations, as it leaves you to use your own imagination. |

Hogwarts RPG Name: Hallie Second | Illustrations are wonderful it helps me to grasp the idea of what is going to happen through out book. I also like books without as well as it gives you free regin to come up with your own ideas about the stories that you read. I agree that children respond well with pictures though. it doesn't matter to me either way works. |

personally, i like the chapter pics, but if he's gonna complain about them, why doesn't he just draw pictures in and make himself feel better?

their not intended to be books for 4 year old children

Yes but as with H/G Emma, YOU'RE WRONG! on this point. *cough* *smoochies* I really miss you in the shipping threads btw, that's why I don't go there anymore *looks at Agent A* What secret messages? Oh. Harry Potter ARE children's books, just because the books grow up doesn't mean they shouldn't be illustrated, whatever your preference and absolute lack of appreciation of art because you obviously didn't read books with pictures in them, they have a long history of them, as Alice in Wonderland is repeatedly re-illustrated but nobody cares because the original illustrations by Tenniel are the best. Ditto The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe books with Pauline Baynes illustrations. Sorry Emma YOU'RE WRONG! *fires the cannons* *glomps Ems* I missed you. That said ... everyone go read my fic ... if you're nice, I might even illustrate it. *fires the cannons* Quote:

And I'm totally gonna refrain from commenting on the lack of imagination apparent in the whole ... black or white mode of thinking, it has to be this way or that ... namely cuz I'm brown, and pushing it already ... I'm leaving Ems ... *glompsEms&flees*

I'm glad it's not illustrated so you can use your mind to picture it. I think pictures would put too much reality in the minds of the children. I can't imagine what they would do with illustrations of people they have grown to care about in the course of the books die in pictures. I think it will be bad enough in our heads. Besides the movies are going to do that for them soon enough.

thats kind of a weird thing to b**ch about, who cares, its not just a kids book, so so wat, u actually think w/o pictures in Harry Potter its gonna hurt kids' imagination and education? this is almost as ridiculous as Laura Mallory

They're great without illustrations. You have a diffrerent picture, a better imagination. To me, it's better any way. Though no one should ever criticise the books or anything about Harry Potter. It's better to keep these thoughts to themselves!!Though I do like the American edition. This is almost a stupid as Laura Mallory. They have their opinion and I have mine. To me, only a b**ch would say that.

I personally like them WITHOUT illustration. These are more young adultish books anyways, we're not like 5 or something... we don't need them for every few pages or something. We have our imaginations for a reason
I don't mind the beginning chapter illustrations, but it kind of restricts my imagination in a sense (after seeing it)... I dunno why but it just seems to. It gives you an idea of what the scene/chapter is about, but sometimes it tho, it's just... well yeah.
That's why I don't like them that much. Don't mind 'em, but if I could get a book without them I would...
But it's a bit late now cause I preordered (and I'm in Canada so I've got the American/Canadian version. Whatever you wanna call it...)

Hogwarts RPG Name: Bueller B. Betsworth Fifth Year | Jor!Jor! Queen Hermidana I honestly don’t care. I mean yes my HP books have illustrations at the beginning of the chapters, but if they didn’t it really wouldn’t bother me.
Books are about using your imagination and illustrations really aren’t necessary in my mind; especially with the HP books. Jo’s writing alone makes it very easy for one to imagine what is going on.
He needs a zipper. –ships him a zipper with a lock- I’m sure his mouth would love that. |
