| | | Rupert Grint & Richard Griffiths comment on Harry Potter films' Academy Awards snubs
Actors Rupert Grint and Richard Griffiths, who attended the South Bank Sky Arts Awards this past Wednesday, commented to the Evening Standard on why the Harry Potter films failed to receive a great deal of recognition at the Academy Awards. The films have been nominated nine times since the release of Sorcerer's Stone in 2001, but have not won a single Oscar. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I was recently nominated for two technical awards: best art direction, and achievement in visual effects. Quote:
When asked why the franchise had not received major nominations again, Grint said: "We don't expect it."
"Either way, the final movie will be huge. We did some re-shoots at the end of the year. We're really going to go out with a bang. That's everyone's goal really. It's going to be pretty epic."
"It would be great to see the technical [team receive] recognition. They devote their whole lives to it."
Quote:
Griffiths, 63, said: "It's sad it's only technical awards and not artistic ones. It's the biggest movie phenomenon on the planet. I remember when ET was the highest earning movie of all time - $870 million. With Harry Potter, you're talking $6 billion.
"Guys? Something's going on! Why don't you honour it?"
The 83rd annual Academy Awards will be broadcast live on ABC Sunday, February 27, 2011 at 8pm EST/5pm PST. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I has now been released worldwide; Deathly Hallows: Part II will be out July 15, 2011. Click on the banner below to order tickets for the film at Fandango. Tickets are also on sale now in the UK; head over to the Harry Potter official UK Facebook for more information. |

I really am over awards shows-it is always the same people for everything-country shows, oscars, golden globes...w/e... for the fact that even Kristen Stewart and TW won People's Choice makes me worry about people's choices but oh well... What Rupert and Richard said is very true... anyway HP will ALWAYS be #1 and if I am not mistaken, have surpassed Star Wars franchise yes? Or will soon?

That's ridiculous!!!
I agree with Richard, it's the most successful franchise ever and they're not even getting recognised for acting! That's a load of dragons dung!

The Acadsmy awards people are just a bunch of people who have no clue of what makes an awesome movie. Recognition from them is not what Harry Potter makers should want. The fans views are a hundred-billion times more important than theirs. And we love it.

But, I do agree with the Academy on the movies they chose every year, because most of the time, they are right: the movies nominated for most of the great awards are pretty good, sometimes the best ones of the year.
But I also algree to say that the Academy have some prejudice toward the fantasy movies, and the Lord of the Rings was EXCEPTIONAL, Even if I think Harry Potter movies should get recognition, I don't expect one, because the movies are a lot more teenage-like than the Lord of the Ring was. And the Academy generally don't like these movies either. So, a fantasy teenage-like franchise who won 6 billion in the box office is a bit too popular for the Academy, I guess.
I'm repeating myself, but I still pray to see the last movie in at least 3 or 4-5 nominations sections: production, Art Direction, Special effects and, make-up and one actor's category (Alan Rickman for example). I agree whole heartedly. I love Harry Potter with all my heart, and I always will, but in terms of "Best Actor/Actress," "Best Picture," etc. HP isn't all that exceptional compared to some of the other films that get nominated. However, while Alan Rickman has done a fine job of portraying Snape, he'll never get recognition for that because, one, like you said, it's from a fantasy film franchise that doesn't really have much craft when it comes to categories like that and two, he doesn't get much screen time to really show off more to the people in the academy. For us fans, we know he does more than enough with his limited screen time to make an impression and honestly get a best supporting actor recognition, but we’re not the ones voting for that, sadly.
As for art direction, I really don't understand why the Academy likes to snub the film on that because there, they have done more than exceptional. I know they have a prejudice against fantasy films; however, it when it comes to art/technical things, isn't it all about the imagination behind it? A fantasy film in that category makes sense here. And the reason I believe they should be getting and award more than anyone else in that category is that the films have show the improvement in art/technical directions, which should show their devotion to the film franchise better than any of the other films in that category. The people in those department really deserve something, because they've spent ten years on it.
Anyways, like Rupert said, we really don't need an Academy Award to define the franchise because we've got a loyal group of fans. And not only that, the films themselves have been quite favorable and gotten good reviews so it's not like the films are absolutely horrible pieces of work.

| Both are sadly correct. The movies that win, are the ones that do the most campaigning. They're like the lobbyists of Hollywood. HP stands alone and on its own merits. It's a great testiment to this movie franchise, that the cast/crew really appreciate and value their fans. |
