Rupert Grint admits original Deathly Hallows 2 epilogue was longer, more dialogue
Rupert Grint revealed in a new interview that the original epilogue shot for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, on set at King's Cross in London, was actually a much longer and detailed sequence that the reshoot that was eventually featured in the final film. Rupert also admitted that he never actually got to see what he as 37-year-old Ron looked like in the first epilogue shoot, and hoped that it would be featured as part of the DVD/Blu-ray extras of the final film.
The epilogue - I know you guys filmed it originally and then reshot it. Today I asked [director David] Yates including it possibly on the Blu-ray, or the eventual ultimate big box set. What was your take on it? Did you see the original way you shot the epilogue?
Rupert Grint: I never saw it, no. But it's a very different scene, actually.
The original epilogue?
Rupert: The original epilogue. In the one that we reshot, we changed a lot. I mean, not just the makeup, it was very realistic but too much. I particularly aged terribly. They had a lot of fun with me, like a fat suit, receding hair, a lot makeup and weird teeth. And yes, the scene was very different. It's a lot longer, actually. There was a lot more dialogue, and a lot more to it.
Is this something you'd object to being on the Blu-ray down the road, or you don't mind if fans see it eventually?
Rupert: No, I wouldn't object to it. I would want to see it myself, just to see - I never really got a good look at it. It's hard to know what it looks like on-screen, really, I mean it's different than looking in the mirror. On camera, things tend to look different. Yeah, it'd be interesting to compare the two.
David Yates stated that he was unsure if he should put the original epilogue on the DVD extras, and wanted to look back at it again before considering releasing it. That can be viewed here.
Rupert also confessed that he had no desire to retire from acting, given his love of working on set and wanting to challenge himself as an actor.
Quote:
"I have quite a strange relationship with money, really. At age 11, money isn't really a big thing at all. I never thought about being rich. Then suddenly you have all this money, and it doesn't seem like it's real. I've never seen it. I don't know where it is. It's weird, kind of like a fantasy.
"I don't think I'll ever retire. I still have ambitions. I love being on set, and I want to do more movies. I'm very lucky to have that cushion, but I'd like to keep going. I like testing my capabilities."
I'd really love to see the first shoot of the epilogue, i think it would be really great to compare the two. Although i do wish they had included a little more dialogue, but overall it did work really well :-)
I hope they release the extended version. With the shortest film to date, they could have spent a couple more minutes on the epilogue, I thought. (It would have been great to see people looking at Harry, and Ron playing it off since the kids don't realize...) But if it's not even the same make up...where they try and make Rupert look much older than he would be, and worse for wear for a freakin' auror...then maybe not.
Just saw HP7 part 2 and was surprised to see they didn't have the scene where Voldemort has Harry by the throat and says "Why do you live?" and Harry says because I have something worth living for." The epilogue was cute but what happened to Lily Luna complaining she wants to go to Hogwarts?
I think they should have left the lengthy version and kept the way they looked. I am glad they changed that from the pictures I have seen, now they look like they are in there 30's.
Otherwise great movie. We had a power surge in the theatre when I went and they had to rewind about 3 minutes of the film because the sound went out.
Great job everyone, sorry to see it end. VERY sad!! = (
I juust saw the film today & I thought the epilogue was a job well done
everyone looked terrific!
but yeah I do agree with a few others here, on the other hand,
the scene should have been much longer than it actually was...they should have added a little more to it, perhaps.
Totally agree that it was great, but I wish the dialogue from the book was included. Hopefully the full one that they filmed will be included on the special edition disc as a bonus scene! Great interview as well!
So glad that Rup isn't retiring from acting! :'D And I'd love to see the original scene on the DVD. Still resisting Blu-ray. I liked the epilogue more than I tohught I would and I suppose I'd take that over horrible costuming any day.
yeah I still wanna see Rupert in lots of films! I love special features *cough cough hint hint yates*
Heart keeper ♥ l Rawrrr ll domestïc equïne ll cherryy''
Oh! That's good to know, I really do hope they include it in the DVDs, that should be interesting enough to watch! I love how Rupert kept fixing his hair
