Rupert Grint admits original Deathly Hallows 2 epilogue was longer, more dialogue

Rupert Grint revealed in a new interview that the original epilogue shot for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, on set at King's Cross in London, was actually a much longer and detailed sequence that the reshoot that was eventually featured in the final film. Rupert also admitted that he never actually got to see what he as 37-year-old Ron looked like in the first epilogue shoot, and hoped that it would be featured as part of the DVD/Blu-ray extras of the final film.

The epilogue - I know you guys filmed it originally and then reshot it. Today I asked [director David] Yates including it possibly on the Blu-ray, or the eventual ultimate big box set. What was your take on it? Did you see the original way you shot the epilogue?
Rupert Grint:
I never saw it, no. But it's a very different scene, actually.

The original epilogue?
Rupert:
The original epilogue. In the one that we reshot, we changed a lot. I mean, not just the makeup, it was very realistic but too much. I particularly aged terribly. They had a lot of fun with me, like a fat suit, receding hair, a lot makeup and weird teeth. And yes, the scene was very different. It's a lot longer, actually. There was a lot more dialogue, and a lot more to it.

Is this something you'd object to being on the Blu-ray down the road, or you don't mind if fans see it eventually?
Rupert:
No, I wouldn't object to it. I would want to see it myself, just to see - I never really got a good look at it. It's hard to know what it looks like on-screen, really, I mean it's different than looking in the mirror. On camera, things tend to look different. Yeah, it'd be interesting to compare the two.
David Yates stated that he was unsure if he should put the original epilogue on the DVD extras, and wanted to look back at it again before considering releasing it. That can be viewed here.

Rupert also confessed that he had no desire to retire from acting, given his love of working on set and wanting to challenge himself as an actor.

"I have quite a strange relationship with money, really. At age 11, money isn't really a big thing at all. I never thought about being rich. Then suddenly you have all this money, and it doesn't seem like it's real. I've never seen it. I don't know where it is. It's weird, kind of like a fantasy.

"I don't think I'll ever retire. I still have ambitions. I love being on set, and I want to do more movies. I'm very lucky to have that cushion, but I'd like to keep going. I like testing my capabilities."

Good for Rupert - he has made excellent decisions and sounds like his popularity and the exposure hasn't "gone to his hear" which is very refreshing.

ladycplum 07-18-2011 02:23 AM

They had BETTER show us the full epilogue on the DVD release. Or, down the road, like Peter Jackson did with LOTR, release nice, huge box sets with tons of commentary and hours of deleted and unused footage. I'd certainly pay for them!

wickedcml 07-18-2011 02:23 AM

I enjoyed DH2 but was a little disappointed in the epilogue because I felt it was too short. What was missing is the character of the kids which would have come through with the dialogue between them and their parents..

Agreed! Plus, no Teddy or Victoire, and we didn't really get to see Scorpius either.

I loved Deathly Hallows Part 2, but I felt that the epilogue was really short and that there wasn't that much dialogue. (I was also a little disappointed, because they didn't include Teddy Lupin.) I hope they release the original!

That's :( he misses shooting the HP films. That's o.k. I wish there was going to be more films as well.

cherbear09 07-18-2011 02:29 AM

well i wish i could say i am surprised to here this.. i thought they should have kept a lot of of the deleted scenes from part 1 in the movie.. or more of this or that of which we know they filmed..

**spoiler**i mean things were changed in the movie, to make things more exciting rather than stay dedicated to the book in specific very important moments

i wish there had been more to the epilogue, i was suprised by the lack of dialogue going on. i also didnt really think any of them looked much older besides Draco, and Harry looked slightly older

it was still a nice scene, but could have been better for sure

Ribbons 07-18-2011 02:33 AM

I loved this epilogue though. The part between harry and albus is so sweet. Dan acts father role very well...

ShiningStar 07-18-2011 02:46 AM

I liked the epilogue alot but I would LOVE to see the longer version ( why didn't the reshoots have the same dialogue? I would've loved to have heard more from Ron in that scene).

I hope Yates listens to the fans and releases it. There should be a feature on the dvd anyways about them shooting the epilogue anyways ( it's an important part of the book), why not show how they went about it?

pundantic 07-18-2011 02:51 AM

They better show this scene.... I loved how simple it was in the film... it topped off the movie very nicely. But I am still an HP fan and we like MORE, MORE, MORE.

princess of*hp* 07-18-2011 02:56 AM

So glad that Rup isn't retiring from acting! :'D And I'd love to see the original scene on the DVD. Still resisting Blu-ray. I liked the epilogue more than I tohught I would and I suppose I'd take that over horrible costuming any day.

AshleyWheat 07-18-2011 03:28 AM

I completely agree with everyone- I would love to have seen more dialogue and I really do hope the extended one is released on the special edition dvd or whatever he pleases.

insanelysyd95 07-18-2011 03:32 AM

I hope they include the original epilogue in the extras! It'd be cool to see the Davids' original takes on the epilogue. I also hope Rupert doesn't stop acting; like he said, it's nice to have the financial cushion, but if he really enjoys acting, I don't think he should stop. I think he could go somewhere with his acting career.

HogwartsHokage 07-18-2011 03:34 AM

Thank you Rupert! Even though the epilogue was my favorite out of all the scenes in the movie, I thought something was a bit off because it was too short and needed more dialogue!

cade.mayfair 07-18-2011 03:52 AM

Hope springs eternal. P.S. He really is looking v nice now. More movies please! :-)

jain 07-18-2011 04:04 AM

loved the booked, disliked the epilogue. Love thefilm, still dislike the epilogue.

Harry1985 07-18-2011 04:19 AM

I thought the epilogue in the film was handled better than in the book, the only line that was really necessary was the "you are named after two headmasters of Hogwarts, one of them was a Slytherin, and he was the bravest man I ever knew." While Deathly Hallows is my all time favorite book, the epilogue feels kind of awkward and clunky at times. I would have been perfectly happy if the book ended with "I've had enough trouble for one life." Plus, if it ended that way, it would have left open more possibilities about what happened post Year 7.

Astoria Malfoy 07-18-2011 04:23 AM

I hope they release the original on the DVD. My guess is they will somewhen with the Ulimate Editions, Collector's Boxes etc...

sweetpinkpixie 07-18-2011 05:26 AM

I really do hope that the longer epilogue which SHOULD be on the DVD/Blue Ray release includes more of Ron. He blended into the background and really didn't DO anything...

Makes me feel like Yates just has it out against Ron as a character :(

La La 07-18-2011 06:15 AM

Nice interview~!

Weasley1903 07-18-2011 07:07 AM

I loved the epilogue but i wish it was longer and it had a more conversations. :( I need more of it! :D

BonnieGinnyfan 07-18-2011 07:20 AM

Ahh I KNEW something was missing from the epilogue [:/] Why did they cut it out? :( I really hope they show this scene........... :(

melissa430 07-18-2011 08:18 AM

I think the epilogue was beautifully done, but I do miss the dialogue that took place in the book. I think that the epilogue in the book was humorous in parts, and maybe the director felt that since this was the very last scene in the movie franchise that focusing on the more poignant moments was the best way to go. Dan did a tremendous job portraying a dad, and I thought they did a great job in making him look like the actor who played James.

snapefan 07-18-2011 08:51 AM

nice interview!
