In an interview that was conducted in July, which escaped our radar, David Yates talks about the possibility of Rufus Scrimgeour being cut from Half-Blood Prince. He also states that if the character does stay, he'd like Bill Nighy to play him. Quote: You worked with Bill Nighy in “Girl in the Café.” Don’t you think he’d make a great addition to the Potter films?
Oh man, I’m already there. The only problem is, we’re looking at the next adaptation and Rufus Scrimgeour, who takes over the Ministry of Magic from Fudge, we’re not sure if he’s going to be in the finished screenplay yet. We’re struggling with it at the moment, and he’s in one moment and he’s out the next. But if he stays in, I’m going to be on the phone quick as a shot to Bill and say, “Bill, come on, you’ve got to do this, man.”

We’ve already started developing the script, and we’ve started preproduction as well. So I do “H.P. Five” in the mornings and “[Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince]” in the afternoons at the moment. The next one’s going to be thrilling. The sixth book ends with a death again, which is very moving—but the actual story itself is very entertaining and fun. It’s very different than the fifth film, much more of a romantic comedy in many ways, which for me—and I think for Dan, Rupert, Emma, for all the young cast—it’s going to be a really cool gear change to make.
The script will have been locked by now, so they will know whether he's in it or not, although minor edits will still be made as shooting commences. We don't know either way yet - not a peep has been heard about any major casting for the sixth film.

He's not that much of an impotrant character, so it's cool if he isn't in the movies. As long as they don't cut out the important parts I'm happy.

I hope they do leave him in. I've been hoping they would pick Bill Nighy for the role because that's who I saw as RS while reading the books. I didn't care for him too much in Pirates but Bill was awesome in Shaun of the Dead, Love Actually, and he's the only character I liked in Underworld. They'd better leave him in!

I really hope he's in. Cause if he's not, not only will they taking out a minor/important character, but then they'd have to ut out the Dumbledore's man through and through thing. Also, if Rufus is in, that'd be so cool if Bill Nighy played him! even though I've only seen him in three movies, I still think he's a cool actor

Actually... *has, once again, the obscure PoV* I don't think it would be too awful to cut him. I'd prefer they keep more nessecary plot events in the book than spend a bunch of time on the minister of magic. Although... I will really miss the line "Dumbledore's man, through and through"... as it's probably my favorite quote of the book.

Scrimgeour needs to stay, he represents the corruption of the Ministry.Arresting innocent people,making false accusations and more importantly The whole scene of Harry being Dumbledore's man through and through. It would lack importance if that scene was cut out.

They really should have Rufus in HBP! In DH, he's the one that tells the trio about Dumbledore's will and stuff! And it would be nice seeing Rufus at least once before DH!

If they cut him is the how will Harry become "Dumbledore's Man"? That is am important theme in HBP and it carries into DH as well even if the phrase isn't used.

I've nearly finished re-reading HBP and I think that's a very apt summary. The romance and the sexual politics are very much at the forefront, as has been said before the kids are at the point where they're a bit more savvy about the opposite sex, particularly girls. Quote:

They could change who says it...maybe Snape? Given what we find out in DH, that would be VERY fitting. RS doesn't need to be there for that theme to be present.

Scrimgeour is an important character. He's in the last one & he adds more drama to books. Bill Nighy is a good choice. He was a fabulous Davy Jones.
