The Washington Post has chosen Laura Mallory, the Georgian woman who tried to ban Harry Potter books that she's admittedly never read from school libraries, as the “2006 Idiot of the Year.” Quote:

okay i know she was wrong for trying to ban the harry potter books because i've seen kids who are not interesting in reading AT ALL lock their selves in a room and won't come out untill they finish it (over exagerating) JKR is really a heroe in my eyes. but idiot of the year? that's really kind of harsh. she was standing up for something she felt... strongly about. No, she should have NEVER tried to stop kids from reading it but is it really fair to call her an idiot? Poor lady, she's probaly crying right now. Now don't get me wrong, i'm not on her side but i am not on the side who's calling her an idiot. i would've suggested that she voiced her opinions but didn't try to ban them. well actually number one i would tell her to read them. is this is how it's going to be? when someone totally mucks it up we're going to announce there faliure by calling them idiots? I disagree... i really do...

I don't feel bad for her either. It would be one thing if she had actually read the books. But she didn't even have the decency to do that. If she had, she would be entitled to an educated opinion. Hwever, she heard 'witchcraft' and 'magic' and assumed that these books were evil. Common sense woman, if over half of the WORLD reads and loves these books, and they have made movies based off of them, do you honestly think that they would be promoting devil worship? I think not. She was showing off her ignorance pure and simple, and now the country and the world, knows her for what she really is: an 'idiot'. Congratulations Laura Mallory, for being the biggest idiot of this year.

Here's my two cents:
If she would have researched what she was debating, perhaps she wouldn't have gotten the IDIOT OF THE YEAR award. Harry Potter may involve the casting of spells and the saying of incantations, but it does not promote it. Had she picked up a book about the Wiccan religion, she would have realised that it is in no way, shape, or form a demonic or satanic religion. It is merely based on energies and...stuff (so I'm told). To claim anything HARRY POTTER related as satanic is unfair. If them casting spells is satanic, what about all the books about faeries? What about Ella Enchanted, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty? Ban Harry Potter and you automatically ban the rest. This means kids have nothing to read.
Way to go, Ms. Mallory. You ruined it.
