| | | Jamie Campbell Bower talks Grindelwald costume in Deathly Hallows (UPDATED)
Actor Jamie Campbell Bower (Grindelwald) recently spoke about the differences between his upcoming features New Moon and Deathly Hallows. Jamie discussed how he has both series in common with co-star Robert Pattinson, and his views on the types of fans who watch the films. The video can be seen here. Quote: We're going to see you in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" as Gellert Grindlewald, joining Rob as the only actor to have a foot in both of these phenomenally huge franchises. Have you guys bonded over this?
Campbell Bower: Well, Rob is quite a significant character in the "Potter" movies, I believe, from what I can remember. My character is a bit smaller. Have you and Rob discussed things he learned as he tried to go from one franchise to the other? Did he have pointers for you?
Campbell Bower: No. There isn't much difference between them, apart from the story. They're both massive franchises, and they both work like a machine, you know? Everyone's on time, and everyone's doing the best job that they can. Some people might say that "Twilight" is more for girls, while boys enjoy "Potter" more. Would you agree?
Campbell Bower: I'd say that they've both got fairly specific fanbases. "Twilight" is more for your 13- to18-year-olds, although there are people who obviously enjoy it — older people — which is great. But I think the main audience is the 13- to 18-year-olds, maybe because of Rob and the fact that they love Edward. [As for] "Harry Potter," it's a bit younger. Although the recent films are a bit dark. I saw [a "Potter" film] the other day, and I thought it was quite scary. You've also got your older audience [there]. What's the difference between how you approach each franchise?
Campbell Bower: Like, am I playing them the same? No, I mean, they're two different characters, they're two different people. [To play them the same] would be like, "I've just eaten some cheese, and now I'm eating an apple, and it tastes like cheese." When you're filming anything, you've just got to believe in the character and believe yourself that you are the character.
UPDATE: Jamie also talked briefly about his character, Grindelwald, his costume and how he will be featured in only Deathly Hallows Part I: Quote:
"I play Gellert Grindelwald, who is an old friend of Dumbledore's," explained the 21-year-old actor. "It's a flashback character, which is good fun. I did a little bit before I went off and did 'New Moon.'"
"No, I'm just doing number one," he answered when we asked if Grindelwald was scheduled to be in both halves of the split-for-the-cinema-sequels made from J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" novel. "Thus far, I mean. I haven't seen the script for the second one; I don't think anyone has seen the script for the second one."
As for the look of Gellert, the actor revealed: "We're pretty much keeping it straight; the costume is fantastic — we had this idea that he's very bird-like. He's described in the book as almost looking like a crow or something like that, and we [latched] onto that; I have a nice jacket which makes me look cool."
"It doesn't have wings or anything; it's just the way that it's cut. It's very subtle," he explained. "But, as is true with a lot of things in film, if you know what the intention is and the background of it, then you can recognize it — but if you're not really watching or paying any attention, then you'll miss it."

| urine trouble | Pat's Strong Confident Other Half | Pees Like a Champion Unicorn Racehorse Wow. Jamie's...unexpected. Bad guys in HP and Twlight. Wow. I guess he suits because he has that mysterious and dark look on him. 1 sec. What?! What does he mean that HP is for younger audiences? I think it's for all ages but Twilight is for 13-18 girls. And this is coming from a girl. No offence to all those who love Twilight.

HP fans are not necessarily younger... HP is great to any age, any person that wants to dream, fantazise and believe in magic BUT also learn about the world and reality of life

I thought grindelwald was an interesting character. Although wasn't he the one who was gay with Dumbledore? If he was then I doubt they'll show that. The might subtly hint at it though *hopeful smile*

Harry Potter is SO MUCH BETTER THAN TWILIGHT!!! I can't believe Jamie would say that! Oh, well! I'm sure he'll play Grindy wonderfully!

It will be interesting to see his performance in both movies... Can't wait. I wished he wold have said more about his character, and I do agree with the posts before me that HP is more well known and has a broader age range(:

You know, I think that he probably hasn't read either of the series, and was trying to keep his answers neutral.. That is a good thing for an actor, as he wants to keep his job, as well as his fan base.
Anndd the first couple books were aimed at younger kids.. but they got darker.. and so the audience grew.. |

Oh, come on, now! How many actors are a part of a book adaptation without reading the said book? I agree, he could've worded his opinions better, but even so, we ain't totally sure that's exactly how he said it. As stated before, he just doesn't want enemies.
And as far as the younger audience commentary goes, we can't forget that the first couple of books/movies WERE pretty much films for kids. My Mum doesn't understand how an 18 year old is so addicted to children's books, no matter how hard I explain to her that it isnt a children's book, not at all. But it was the stereotype that was created around Harry Potter and, like all stereotypes, it's not fair nor true. But there's not much we can do about it except laugh in the face of people that think that. Not that I laugh in my Mum's face. Hmm.
But anyway, despite all of that, I liked this interview. I like the fact they're subtly making Grindelwald look 'birld-like'. I can't wait to see Jamie in his costume. |

Hogwarts RPG Name: unsorted | The more he talks...the less I like him. I just don't think he's right for the Grindlewald role, but I guess I will just have to wait and see. I don't remember anything about a "bird" when I read Deathly Hallows. I thought Grindlewald was described as being handsome, boyish, and intriguing.
I completely disagree with him about Harry Potter's fanbase. There are a lot of young fans, but most of them have just recently got into the books and movies. Most HP fans are 17 and older because we've grown up with the story. I know I was 12 when I started reading the books and I'm 22 now. The oldest fans I've met were close to 70 years old. It was an old married couple at the midnight release of OOTP. So HP's fan base is universal. |

I am slightly pleased he knows the description from the book, but I still wonder if he read it.... I guess we will just wait and see how he does. We also have to remember, that a lot of actors/actresses haven't read the book, but still portray the characters Phenomenally well!!!! We just have to trust the casting agents bc they haven't let us down thus far!!

I think Harry Potter has a bigger age range than Twilight, and Twilight is a good book, but I don't think the movie was all that good. I might have been obsessed with it at some point. But I think Harry Potter has more action and everything.

oh and Jamie Bower is a small enough (for now) british actor who has appeared in Sweeney Todd, and is to be a vampire in New Moon and young Gwindewald in Deathly Hallows. I kinda think he suits the role of Gwindy myself,he has that slightly odd mystery about him that i'd imagine a powerful wizard like Gwindewald would have! He has actually read Twilight. Quote:

Dumbledore was infatuated with him, yes, hence being seduced by the ideas about power and everybody having their place. Quote:
I still wonder if he read it....
He does say he hasn't.

If Harry Potter was never written I would probably be obsessed with it too. [Shudders] I know scary thought but it might just be true.

I shudder at the thought that I might be obsessed too if HP wasn't around. But HP is and I'm very glad that I have a good piece of literature to read Now, I hate Twilight with a burning passion, but since SS doesn't want conflict, I shall not say anything more on that subject. But I DO just want to say that Harry Potter is not JUST for kids. Yes, while kids love it, I still think that they'll be too young to understand some of the meaning behind it. Maybe that's just my opinion, but I don't think that a five year old could read Deathly Hallows or Goblet of Fire and understand eveything. Jamie clearly has not read the books and should do that if he wants to assume things. I hate it when people think HP is just for the younger audience when they have NO idea that it is really for all ages.
