| | | J.K. Rowling talks Hedwig's fate in new interview
J.K. Rowling spoke to Harry, A History author Melissa Anelli about the Harry Potter series in a new interview, segments of which will be released periodically as they were not published in the text. One particular subject discussed was the fate of Hedwig, Harry's beloved pet owl: Quote:
"I had to work quite hard in finding a very particular way for that [Snitch] to be caught because I knew I was going to do that later; initially, as my British editor can confirm, I had Hedwig catch that [Snitch]. She wanted that changed, and I thought, 'Oh, God, back to the drawing board.'
Actually that's what sealed Hedwig's fate, because the plan was for Hedwig to open the [Snitch], because she touched it first, but, by making it Harry, then it was time to kill her earlier. I think she was going to die anyway, eventually."
The book, which releases on November 4th, can be purchased at Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk. |

Harry had to open the snitch at the right time in his mouth as that is how he originally caught his first snitch during the Quidditch match. As far as Hedwig dying, it is so sad as it was his second present (after the birthday cake) from Hagrid, but JK was showing how so many close to Harry, people and animal, blood relative and mentors alike, had died, ultimately because of Voldemort.

I also think that Hedwig needed to die. I feel like she was a symbol of Harry's innocence, so she eventually had to die. I'm glad that JKR did Hedwig justice with a good, tragic, very sad death scene though.

Oh, that's so sad! I cried when Hedwig died, because that was so sad for Harry, he loved Hedwig very much. But, I understand why she did that as she mentioned in an earlier interview. That was really awesome what she did with the snitch, I loved it.
I can't wait for the rest of the interview.

A couple of you hit it right on the head. The following is from a web chat with J.K. Rowling on Bloomsbury.com last year. Quote:
Twinkletoes: Why did you feel that Hedwig's death was necessary?
J.K. Rowling: The loss of Hedwig represented a loss of innocence and security. She has been almost like a cuddly toy to Harry at times. Voldemort killing her marked the end of childhood. I'm sorry... I know that death upset a LOT of people!

I agree with that editor, it was better to make Harry cath that snitch.
Hedwig's death not only symbolizes Harry's growing up. At that stage of the story Voldemort has gained power and is after Harry. It is just more realistic and convincing if in that situation someone close to Harry is killed - and better that someone is an owl than a human.

That's interesting... cool. But I don't think JKR should have done an interview for a fan book, unless i've misinterpreted that. If Jo wants to give out new info she should use her website.

He could have left Hedwig at the Weasleys, given her to Hagrid. Though I think she could have taken care of herself.

Wow, I was really sad when Hedwig died. I don't understand what Jo said about "Hedwig caught the Snitch first." What? I don't remember that?

poor Hedwig... I don't think it was necessary to kill her at all! I mean it was Harry's companion, not his protector!!!

Poor Hedwig!! That was one of the saddest parts in DH. I thought her death was really unncessary just like Fred. She was just an owl and Harry's childhood pet. Why??

It was one of the hardest deaths for me to accept in DH, yet considering the other two choice, better Hedwig than Hagrid or Harry. It was sort of surreal when I read it because one of my first thoughts went back to the first book when Ronan said, "Always the innocent are the first victims".
