| | | Harry Potter launch a 'top cultural moment' At the beginning of the month we told you that the launch of Philosopher's Stone, in 1997, which started the Harry Potter series, had been longlisted as a Key Cultural Landmark. The moment has now made the shortlist, coming in at third place. Quote:
The launch of the Three Tenors has beaten the iPod and the emergence of Brit Pop as the best cultural moment of the last 21 years.
The Three Tenors, launched in 1990 with Placido Domingo, Jose Carreras and Luciano Pavarotti, topped the survey to mark the 21st anniversary of Hay Literary Festival.
The Globe theatre reopening in 1997 was second, followed by the release of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in the same year.
The moments considered featured in the last 21 years, with the poll conducted by the Sky Arts channel. The list has now been narrowed down to just 10.
The festival in Powys, Wales, started yesterday and runs through til June 1st.

the Three Tenors were a big thing, but bigger than Potter? i think not. Potter being a global phenomenon hearkens the days of Star Wars, but for the publishing industry.

I have no idea what the Three Tenors are. I'm guessing they're a singing group seeing as the word "tenors" is in there, but I've never heard of them before.
HP would top my list, without a doubt. |

Hogwarts RPG Name: Sabrina Dumbledore Fourth Year | I think if they did this survey again in another ten years, Harry Potter will be the top. We still have 3 movies, hopefully an encyclopedia from Jo, and a number of toys to come out, before we even think about saying good bye to HP! (I'm never going to say goodbye to him, and you can't make me! ) |

Three tenors are three male (obviously) operatic-type singers. Yuck.

Wow, who is taking this survey? the three tenors, now ive heard them sing and it was amazing, but one of the best cultral moments in the last 21 years?!
nevermind the fall of the Berlin wall or the end of the cold war, nope its the three tenors.
i mean i would put the launch of Napster up there before the three tenors.

We spent time here. We made friends here. That's a part of us.
Cause Hogwarts is bigger than any of us, of any of it's founders,
and it's going to be around long after we're gone.
Maybe we'll see our kids come here one day.
That's the thing about Hogwarts.
No matter how long you're away from it, there's always a way back. |

The three tenors are great and all that but I really think HP should be number one. They appeal to an older generation but there are HP fans from all over the world from different generations so I think that HP should've been at the top. But it's great that we're in the top 3.

It's weird to think the Three Tenors beat Rowling. Yes, the Tenors were big but Potter was published and every school library has Harry Potter. His name is known world wide. There are billions of sites devoted to Harry Potter Fandom. It's really ridiculous. I 'pect the list was mostly devoted to older viewers who would appreciate the Tenors more than we do. Potter is our century. Rowling would most definetly be the biggest Publishing Phenomenon since well since Enid Blyton (spl?) and Agatha Christie.
I don't know. I 'spect SS's list would be very different.....
