Sir Michael Gambon, who took on the role of Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore in the last six Harry Potter films, has passed away at the age of 82.

“Beloved husband and father, Michael died peacefully in hospital with his wife Anne and son Fergus at his bedside, following a bout of pneumonia. Michael was 82.”

The Irish actor who was cast as Dumbledore after Sir Richard Harris passed away in 2002, started his wizarding career in 2004's Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban all the way to the finale in 2011's Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II.
Outside of the franchise, Gambon was an award-winning actor on stage and screen for more than 60 years, starring in such projects as The Singing Detective, Gosford Park, Angels in America, Othello, The Good Shepherd, Emma, The King's Speech, Fortitude, and dozens more.
