Chris Columbus, the director of the first two Harry Potter films, is set to direct the musical Rent Article:
Thanks to Wizardnews Quote: May 07, 2004 - Chris Columbus, director of first two Harry Potter films, has signed on to write and direct a feature film version of the hit Broadway musical Rent for Warner Bros. – that's according to today's Variety.
The trade tips that Warner Bros. recently acquired the movie rights to Rent from Miramax and brought Columbus onboard. While at Miramax, Spike Lee was briefly associated with the project.
Variety adds that Miramax retains the right of first refusal to co-financing and distribute the film internationally.
Rent, by Jonathan Larson, is a contemporary version of Puccini's La Boheme that follows a group of struggling, bohemian artists who live in New York City's East Village. The story centers around Mark and Roger, roommates who live in a tiny Alphabet City apartment. Roger, an HIV-positive musician, meets Mimi, an HIV-positive exotic dancer with a drug habit and she shows him the importance of living for the moment. Mark is an aspiring filmmaker who captures the lives of Roger, Mimi, and their other friends on film.
No other talent is attached to the musical adaptation at this time, but we'll keep ya posted on the latest.

Like i say i dont think he could do any worse but am musical is totaly diffrent from anything he has really done.
i just tink he ruend the first two films for me maby it is because ia am a lot older than the target audence he had in mind for the movies.

I agree ^^
I suppose musicals are pretty different to normal films though. And maybe this one will benefit from yucky smooshy teary fun-for-all-the-family bits.

This makes me want to cry. I don't want him to touch so much as one line, have his hands on as little as one lyric. As far as I can tell, this is horrible news. I mean, I can see a hop from Home Alone to Harry Potter. But this is like a leap across the Pacific Ocean.

I just saw 'Rent' yesterday on Broadway, and it was simply amazing.
I don't know if Columbus is the type of person to direct a movie like 'Rent'... I hope he doesn't screw things up, because it's a very powerful story and a really wonderful play.
