| | | Should there be a fifth Hogwarts house?
Every student that attends Hogwarts is different in background, personality and morals… so do we really think that four houses is enough to categorise all of these students? Do the four houses sufficiently cover everything a student could already be or aspire to be like?
Well, what if we had a fifth house? Do you think a fifth house is needed? Who would it be for? For an extra add on, what would you call it? What would the mascot be?

This is not a serious response to this question, but last night I was thinking about this question before I went to bed and I had a dream that there was a fifth Hogwarts called the "House of Gingerbread" ??? Unfortunately I remember nothing else of this strange, cookie-themed Hogwarts house.
ANYWAY. For the question, I'm not really sure if 4 houses is necessarily enough to sort EVERYONE. But I think that maybe having fewer options is better because that way you don't really have to cover all of the bases as there will be more variation within the houses as a consequence. Whereas if you had 12 different kinds of houses, you open up less wiggle room in each, you know? I'm also kind of imagining, like, what if students were sorted based on their Myers-Briggs types. There's obviously variation within each type, but holy cow if I was in a house with all other ENFJs I might blow up at some point because being surrounded by people who think / express themselves like me 24/7 might drive me up the wall.
I've been thinking about the Hogwarts Houses vs Ilvermorny houses though and find that I strangely prefer the way that Ilvermorny breaks up the sorting, but I think that might just be because I identify more with my ilvermorny house than I do with my hogwarts one. I'm still thinking about what my potential solution / fifth hogwarts house may be though. I'll try to think on that some more.

I'm definitely like you, Ariana, and prefer the Ilvermorny houses. The fact that that there is a possibility that you can be chosen by more than one and you get to choose (if more than one house statue reacts to you) just seems better in my opinion. Hogwarts just relies on a hat to tell you just one after it pokes around in your mind, and you don't get the final say in the end. Plus it seems that Ilvermorny's sorting goes deeper than Hogwarts ... like, the houses are about the inner core of a person and which the individual connects to most rather than certain traits that don't necessarily define a person.
But I digress.
I think the four houses that are present at Hogwarts cover a wide range of personalities/skills that the individual values and/or exhibits. But I am for sure on board with Dumbledore in saying that "I sometimes think we Sort too soon" as people change over time. It makes me wonder what things would be like if students were sorted periodically throughout their magical career.
If there were to be a fifth house, however, I think it could represent the fifth element (aether/void) as the current houses are based on the four classical elements (Gryffindor = fire, Hufflepuff = earth, Ravenclaw = air/wind, and Slytherin = water). Perhaps this could be the house for those that end up being near and true Hatstalls as they would be equally suited for more than one house.

I agree with you, Ariana, on the actual need for LESS houses than more.... already we are having existential crises with house identities.... if there was a fifth to add to the mix, i'd imagine the house identity crisis would be even worse.
Although I do like the idea of a fifth house representing this void and for those who are true hatstalls, but then again, wouldn't that contribute more to the house identity crisis?
But yea i definitely think we evolve over time and one house that might fit us as an eleven year old might not fit us 5 or 10 years later. Like for me, i was CERTAIN my topsy turvy house would be Ravenclaw, but I think maybe a dozen years ago if i would have done this quiz, it would have been and yet as I've gotten older, I've definitely developed more Ravenclaw-esque ways.
Which also makes me think, if we do evolve and change from our house ... perhaps sorting into cunning, witty, bravery, loyal, are not the best measures to use ....?? Is there another way that we can judge people? To differentiate them? Is using something similar to myers-briggs worthwhile? Obviously not 16 houses because that would be ridiculous, but something similar

I think four Houses are more than enough, and we need neither less nor more xD The reason being I rather like the way Rowling has streamlined the traits of each. Zoe quoting Dumbledore's words about Sorting early is something I agree with, as it's in my opinion, we can outgrow them. I saw this theory on social media where it spoke briefly about us being Sorted not into a House who's traits we value the most. So for example, someone may value loyalty and hard work but they necessarily may not possess them at the moment of Sorting. Which leads me back to Dumbledore's thought on that topic.
Overall... I think the number of Houses and their traits are fine, it's the timing of the Sorting.
