It was a sure sign that the chilly weather was letting up as today’s weather was mild. Professor Khanna did not think there would be a need for Heating Charms, and if they became necessary during the course of the lesson, that could easily be amended. Speaking of the lesson, even before you step into the DADA classroom, you hear it - that soft-ish chattering sound. Why did it sound as though there were parakeets having quite a spectacular argument? However, when you do make your way into the room you discover there were no parakeets, much less any other sort of birds present. The chattering continued, however. How peculiar.
Your professor is leaning casually against their desk as they await your arrival. The classroom is set up in its traditional manner: desks and chairs in neat rows and columns along with the whiteboard beside Dhruv’s desk. You are greeted genially as you make your presence known.
OOC: Welcome to DADA, everyone! Kindly take a moment to refresh yourselves with the Rules and Guidelines, paying particular attention to the first rule that falls under the OOC category: labelling your posts with your student's name and House.
We'll get started officially in about 27 hours CLASS HAS STARTED!

Diego was taught that hearing voices was a sign of danger... but this was a Defensive class, so he sort of expected this was part of the lesson today and not him going mad...right?
"Hello, Professor Khanna." Diego looked up at the man, he was tall, not as scary tall as his Head of House, but he was up there, until he got his growth spurt. He smiled. "Thanks for not having the room all that cold today." He added before he went over to his usual desk. Maybe he should've brought his Herbology earmuffs, cause the little chitter-chatter noise had him too curious looking around to find the source of it.

It was now March, and Aurora was happy about that. Not only was the weather getting warmer, it was now her birth month. She would be turning 15 in a few weeks. And it would also be spring.
As she approached the classroom, she could swear she heard what sounded like birds, but once she stepped inside she only saw the professor and one other student. Odd. But she’d shrugged it off, knowing that it was probably related to the lesson. ”Good morning, Professor Khanna,” she said with a smile before sending Diego a friendly wave.
Taking her seat, she waited for the lesson to start. She was curious about the chattering noises.
Xerxes walked into his Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom and looked around. He saw his new friend Rory sitting a table about two rows back from the front. He walked over and sat in the seat next to her.
"Hey girl. How's it going? Are you excited for the lesson?" Xerxes asked her while taking out his wand and his DADA textbook.
Then, seeing his DADA Professor standing in front of the class, he said, "Good Morning Professor. How are you today?"
He then looked around the classroom. It looked mostly normal as far as he was concerned. The only deviation from the norm was an odd chattering sound. He couldn't even immediately tell where it was coming from. Xerxes shrugged, figuring that the strange noise would be fully explained in due course, and then sat and waited patiently for the lesson to begin.

While the warmer weather should have made Kartik better, it also meant one thing ... Graduation was nearing closer. And he was still no closer to determining a career trajectory. He was only 18. So many choices. How was he supposed to choose what he wanted to do for the rest of his life?
The chirping sound was peculiar, but given Professor Khanna, perhaps not really. He just hoped the start of the lesson involved a muffliato charm or he might need to fake senioritis and depart early.
"Hello Professor," he acknowledged, taking a seat near the back in hopes the noise would be better.

It wasn’t long before the students began trickling in, the first being a second year. He could rest easy for he was definitely not going mad. “Hello, Mr. Melo-Dreamer,’’ Dhruv greeted, a genuine smile in place. If they knew about Ean being thought of as ‘scary tall’, they would have had a hearty chuckle. “Quite welcome.”
SPOILER!!: Aurora!

Birthdays were usually exciting. Dhruv would hope that Aurora’s upcoming one would be a wonderful one. They suppressed a little smirk when he saw the shrug; clearly they had succeeded in puzzling the Hufflepuff. All would be revealed in due course, naturally. “Good morning to you as well, Ms. Bay.” Dhruv would like to think she was completely settled into life at Hogwarts now.
SPOILER!!: Xerxes!

Xerxes, at first, seemed more interested in settling in and greeting Aurora so at that time Dhruv let him be. However, when they were addressed, they lifted a hand in greeting. “Good morning, Mr. Cadwallader. I’m quite well, thanks. I hope it’s the same with you?”

It certainly was no surprise that Kartik was struggling to decide on a career path; it happened often, and was something that Dhruv had seen. But there was no hurry, was there? The Ravenclaw should take his time in mulling things over. “Good morning, Mr. Joshi.’’
* * * * * * * * * * * * *
The professor subtly took notice of the time and saw that it was now just a minute before the lesson was scheduled to get started. With a casual flick of a hand, the door to the classroom closed with a soft thud. Next, with a slightly more focused sweeping motion of that same hand, the chattering immediately ceased. The classroom was now quiet. Well, save for the light hum of students talking amongst themselves. Dhruv cleared their throat to gather everyone’s attention.
Since greetings had already been taken care of earlier, they got right down to the first question. “Magical pests or nuisances,’’ they began, pushing lightly off the table then taking a few steps towards the students. “What are some examples of them that can be managed most effectively by using magical methods as opposed to non-magical solutions?”
OOC: Class has now officially started! You’re still welcome to join but keep in mind that announcing their later arrival would mean facing IC consequences Catch up is absolutely allowed. We’ll move along in 24 hours or so <3

Aurora grinned at the Professor then turned her attention to Xerxes. She was happy to have her new friend sit beside her. ”Hey! I’m doing well, and I hope you are too. I’m definitely looking forward to this lesson.” And to see what was making the chattering. Some kind of creature, she presumed, but she wasn’t sure what one.
The lesson began and Aurora raised her hand after giving the question a moment of thought. ”Well, there are pixies. They’re best dealt with using Immobulus.” Way better than trying to deal with them without using magic. There were other creatures she could think of, but she was going to leave it at that to give others a chance to answer.
Rose had soundlessly found herself a seat in the back row just minutes before Professor Khanna started the lesson. She had waved a greeting to her professor as well as her fellow peers before placing her writing utensils on her desk. The chirping sound was annoying but Rose figured the root would be revealed soon enough.
Raising her hand as the first question was asked the sixth year lioness said "Bundium is a green eyed pest that my grandma has had trouble with at her summer house. It creeps under floorboards, and has a really foul smell. Small infestations can de delt with by casting the scouring charm." For larger infestations you needed to contact the ministry of magic. They weren't removing pests from the classroom today right?

Diego smiled, waving back at Aurora. He recognized her hanging out with Zen and her older brother Idris. He waited patiently, trying to ignore the noises, by the time the lesson began.
"Erm... I think a lot of people would agree. Spiders, while Muggles use chemicals to spray and set traps on them, we can at least cast Arania Exumai on them... Or even Bombarda and Incendio, though I don't think the furniture and walls would be as thankful with the excessive force. " Not that he would admit to trying it out, ahem. Dhruv called on Aurora, who’s hand they had noticed had raised first. Listening to her answer, they nodded casually. “Very true. Pixies can be quite a handful to deal with, sometimes even for the most capable witch or wizard. Because these tiny creatures are so agile and speedy, the Freezing Charm is a great option to halt their movements.”

The greeting had been returned after Rose’s arrival. Now, they gestured to her with a nod and a call of her name to volunteer her answer. “Bundium. Yes. A highly dangerous beast if left alone, despite their helpful nature to feed on dirt. In addition to the odour, the secretions they leave behind is enough to rot buildings. Those secretions can be used in their diluted forms in some magical solutions.” They paused for a moment. "Correct in both instances, Ms. Snakebark, with regard to dealing with Bundiums. The Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures - Pest Sub-Division - is which you will need to contact for large infestations.”

Spiders. The man had expected those to be mentioned sooner or later. They nodded seriously, knowing quite a few students unfortunately battled arachnophobia. “Excellent. Those three spells are particularly handy for Acromantulas since members of the species are rather large.” Dhruv chuckled. "The furniture and walls would appreciate your consideration, I’m quite sure, Mr. Melo-Dreamer.” There was no sarcasm in their voice.

“Ms. Bay has touched upon today’s topic.” As Dhruv spoke, the words ‘Pixie/Cornish Pixies’ appeared on the whiteboard, large and bolded. Were any of the students putting two and two together now, what that chattering sound from earlier meant? They didn’t have any doubt that this was the case. “There are many known facts about these mischievous creatures. Please share one you know about them. Even if you aren’t aware of any, you are always welcome to make an educational guess.” By now, Professor Khanna had made their way to the back of the class where they decided to remain for now. It was okay if the students couldn’t see them; what was important was that they heard them and had a clear view of the board on which important points would be etched upon.

Oh. So that was the mystery solved then. Aurora wasn’t too sure how she felt about this, knowing how big a pain pixies were. At least she was good with Immobulus. Whatever the specifics of their main activity were, she was sure that she could handle it.
At the next question she raised her hand. ”They’re very strong for their size. They can lift people.” Something that they enjoyed doing.

Pixies, hmm?
A lesson about pests did not spark a lot of interest from Antony, but he could acknowledge it was useful for most people. Admittedly, his lack of interest was perhaps exacerbated by his desire for summer to arrive already. It was still a few months away, which felt like forever, and it made it even more difficult than usual for him to keep his focus in lessons.
But focus he did, at least for this second question. A fact about pixies. Sure, he knew some things. Like... Hmm...
"They grow to a height of about 20 centimetres, at least on average," he said after raising his hand, "which definitely adds to the impressiveness of their strength." To build off what Aurora said. Quite the feat that such a small creature could lift someone so much bigger than they were.

Pixies, Diego was glad it wasn't a more dangerous creature. Not that they're completely harmless, per say. He wondered how they'll get to handle Pixies in the lesson. Diego thought for a moment on some of the facts about Pixies, "They can steal things." He offered with his hand raised.
Diego luckily didn't experience any incident at home with Pixies. His parents were really good on maintaining the house from any pest invasions.
Today's topic was pixies. Rose was glad that it wasn't going to be about some other pest that was smelly or more dangerous. Listening to her peers responses she raised her hand to say when it was her turn. "Pixies have very shrill voices. When they speak to each other it sounds like a lot of arguing budgies." Which explained the chattering voices they had heard when coming into the classroom. The sound belonged to pixies. Maybe she should have braided her hair into a crown? Hopefully the pixies didn't like black hair.

Kartik gave a small smile of acknowledgement at Rose joining him in the back row. It didn't take long before Professor Khanna had disclosed today's topic - pests, naturally and more specifically Pixies. Was there some sort of hidden meaning this term with pixies? The correlation this term was strong that Kartik had to wonder if it was merely a coincidence or more.
He chuckled at Diego's 'fact' on how pixies can steal things.
"They like dancing in the moonlight."

Indeed the mystery had been solved, but Aurora - or anyone else - need not worry. There had been many safety precautions put in place for this lesson. “Correct,’’ Dhruv confirmed once Aurora had given her answer. “If you’re not careful around them, pixies will grab you by whatever means necessary: by your ears, your hair, your clothing… and take you airbourne. Naturally that puts you at great risk because there’s a chance you may fall.” The fact imprinted itself upon the board.

So far, Antony had remained silent during the lesson, and unless Dhruv was misreading the body language, the Ravenclaw seemed a little uninterested. No matter just as long as he wasn't zoned in and made relevant notes.
Smiling, the professor nodded. They did like it when students built off of each other’s answers. “Twenty centimeters or approximately eight inches. Quite a marvel that such a small form is home to such strength. They are a fine example of ‘never judge a book by its cover’.”

That was something the class would be finding out in a few minutes; there more than likely would be some degree of chaos for the young witches and wizards to conquer. “Pixies are thieves, yes. Anything to which they take a liking to, those sneaky little creatures will snatch in a second without hesitation or a second thought. In many cases, you might as well say ‘goodbye’ to your belonging.”

“Excellent point, Ms. Snakebark. This certainly would explain the strange sounds you heard earlier.” But just where were those pixies lurking? “Such loud, extensive chatter-like noises can be quite a nuisance.” Which was another reason why Dhruv had ensured that it could not be heard during the theoretical part of the lesson.

He chuckled at Diego's 'fact' on how pixies can steal things.
"They like dancing in the moonlight."
Dhruv indicated to Kartik, whose hand seemingly was the only raised one now, to give his answer. They chuckled at it. “Some do, yes. I doubt they have much time for such an act when they usually have other michevious acts occupying their time, however.”
* * * * * * * * * * * * *
The professor took a careful glance around the classroom for any additional raised hands. Finding none, they spoke up once again. “If you take a look at the board you will notice that each of the mentioned points are there. You may make your notes if you haven’t done so already. While you do, it is also important to note that pixies are electric blue in colour, are capable of flight. They are classified as triple X by the Ministry of Magic. From our previous lesson, you will recall that this rating means ‘should have been no trouble to competent wizards’." And there were plenty of competent students in this classroom. “Pixies are placed in the ‘Beast’ category, and are related to Fairies and Doxies. However, they do not lay eggs as they give birth.”
Dhruv now fell silent, giving time for note-taking to be done. They thoughtfully moved their gaze upwards, to the ceiling of the class. They were quite confident that the experience the students would gain today would be helpful in the future should they cross paths with the little nuisances.
“Right. Now we’ll be moving along to the practice aspect.” As they spoke, they made their way back to the front of the room. “There are many spells that can be helpful to you when dealing with Pixies, some of which you would have covered already, even if you are a first year. Today, we will be focusing on the Slowing Charm.” The information made itself known on the board, just below the list of Pixie facts.
“Arresto Momentum, pronounced ‘ah-REST-oh - mo-MENT-um’, slows the velocity of your target. A simple wave of the wand accompanies the incantation.” Here, a few demonstrations were completed. “If done correctly, a strong beam of turquoise light will be issued from your wand. Go ahead, do your practice of the two separately. We’ll move along in ten minutes.”

Diego’s eyes took in the facts displayed on the board. He jotted as quickly as possible into his notes, underlining the words electric blue, XXX rating, and part of the Pixie facts. He wanted to be a good student, and he hadn’t known Pixies giving birth instead of laying eggs which... honestly, that was kind of weird to think about. Shaking his head at such an image.
When Professor Khanna demonstrated the spell, Diego sat up straighter. Arresto Momentum. He mouthed the words a few times, then mimicked the wave with his fingers first before picking up his wand to replicate once it was their turn to practice now.
"Ah-REST-oh Mo-MENT-um..." He whispered a few times. Before attempting the wave with the wand. It sure looked easier than in practice. So he kept trying, wanting it to be smooth, Diego had a small grin appear on his face. This is pretty cool.. It's like hitting pause on a muggle remote.
Rose quickly jotted down all the facts about pixies on her parchment. The xxx rating was important as well as their electric blue color and not to mention that they were born as live babies not eggs. Was that because they were related to fairies, and doxies Rose wondered. Odd, raising a hand Rose asked "Is it because pixies are related to fairies that they give birth to live babies professor Khanna?" It was interesting to think about.
The spell they were practicing today was the slowing charm. Arresto Momentum. Rose chanted the incantation several times to herself in a whisper to not disturb the others. "Ah-REST-oh Mo-MENT-um..." An incantation easy to misspronounce. Taking out her wand next Rose practiced the wave hoping that she got the hang of swish in a smooth motion. To be able to slow an approaching target was pretty cool.

Just to have something to do besides daydream, Antony made himself take notes on the facts about pixies that appeared on the board. It was interesting to note that pixies gave birth as opposed to laying eggs, despite being related to fairies and doxies. What did that say about the biology of each that they reproduced differently and yet were related?
A thought for another time.
Focus was instead turned toward spell practice. He felt pretty confident in his ability to cast this spell, but he figured he would practice nonetheless. Time usually flew by much faster when a person kept busy rather than staring into the distance. So he pulled out his wand.
"Ah-REST-oh mo-MENT-um," Antony said slowly, testing it out since it had been ages since he'd attempted the spell. It was not the sort of spell that he gravitated toward using on a daily basis, so a refresher was useful. "Arresto momentum." Not too shabby.
And now the wand movement, where he copied the wave Professor Khanna had shown them. Yep, that seemed accurate, and it felt very doable. Nice little spell, this was.

Diego’s diligent note-taking would be useful in the very near future because yes, pixies would be one of the topics covered at the end-of-term exam. As for that practice, Dhruv thought that the Gryffindor’s wand waving was on par with what they expected. Since the incantation was being whispered coupled with the mutterings of the rest of the class, they weren’t able to discern the pronunciation. “Your practice movement is excellent. Do you mind repeating the incantation a tad louder, Mr. Melo-Dreamer?” they asked cheerfully.
SPOILER!!: Rose

Odd, raising a hand Rose asked "Is it because pixies are related to fairies that they give birth to live babies professor Khanna?" It was interesting to think about.
The spell they were practicing today was the slowing charm. Arresto Momentum. Rose chanted the incantation several times to herself in a whisper to not disturb the others. "Ah-REST-oh Mo-MENT-um..." An incantation easy to misspronounce. Taking out her wand next Rose practiced the wave hoping that she got the hang of swish in a smooth motion. To be able to slow an approaching target was pretty cool.
“That’s a great question, Ms. Snakebark. Fairies and Doxies actually lay eggs, up to fifty and five hundred at a time respectively. Pixies, simply put, were built differently from their relatives. There is no evidence to suggest that Pixies have ever laid eggs in the history of their existence.”
They observed the practice, which was flawless. “Perfectly done,’’ Dhruv offered as motivation.
SPOILER!!: Antony

Antony received a look of approval as he made those notes. When Dhruv next observed the Ravenclaw, he had commenced practice, leaving them with the impression that Antony was now going to be more focused. “Wonderful practice work there, Mr. Vexmoor.”

“It’s time to move on, everyone.” Time really did not wait on anyone; before everyone knew it, the students would have to be heading off to their next lesson. “If you will direct your attention to the ceiling above the board…” Dhruv waited a beat before conducting the big reveal: the Disillusionment Charm was lifted to reveal an enormous cage housing two dozen Cornish Pixies. They were all either making faces at their audience or waving fists. They seemed to be chattering as their mouths moved but they could not be heard as the spell was still in place to keep the chattering from filling the air.
“In a few minutes, I’ll be releasing the Pixies from their cage. Your task is to work as a team to recapture them by placing them in these smaller cages.” Just like that, eight smaller cages appeared on Dhruv’s desk. “Three per cage, please, so that they will be comfortable within.” Simple enough, yes? “You are to use the spell practiced earlier, however, if for some reason you’re unable to properly cast it, you are welcome to use any other spell that comes to mind providing that it does not harm the pixies.” Was Dhruv forgetting anything? Just one important point. “The classroom is reinforced with protective spells to keep you and your belongings safe; in addition, I’ll be present should any situation get alarming.” They cast a look around the room. “If you’ll repack your belongings then get to your feet, please.” After a minute, Dhruv lifted their hand. “Brace yourselves.” The lock to the cage opened and all chaos rained down in all its chattering glory as the spell had fnally been lifted.
OOC: Hi, guys! The main activity commences here! It’ll last for three days {until the evening of Thursday 17th July}. Please do not RP for the Pixies

Slowing charm. Arresto Momentum. Which had Kartik wondering about what would be the difference between using that and impediament charm? They both had the effect of slowing things down? Of course Professor Khanna had stated that multiple charms could be useful against pixies, so perhaps it wasn't necessarily about most effective or least, so much as they needed to cover Arresto momentum as part of the curriculum.
It was definitely useful to have the refresher as well for this charm, since it wasn't necessarily a common spell.
Before long though they were moving on to the task of capturing pixies and placing them in their cages. To which Khanna stated he would be present the whole time, aka not pulling a Professor Leroy and leaving them to their own devices. Gravitating towards his dormmate, Antony, "Wanna work together?" He said in haste, hoping to not attract too much attention, as he quickly repacked his notes, and wand was out in offense.

Xerxes ran over to Rory, swatting a pixie out of the air with his DADA textbook as he did so. Crouching behind a desk, he asked her, "Would you like to work together on this, uh,........project?". He ducked as an ink bottle flew over his head.
Xerxes wasted no more time. He took out his wand and pointed it at the nearest Pixie. "Arresto Momento!" he yelled, making the indicated wand movements in the process. He waited to see if his spell worked or not.

Next upp they were practicing the slowing charm on pixies. As instructed Rose packed up all her belongings except for her wand. Walking over to her housemate she hastily asked. "Diego, want to be partners?"
In a matter of moments two dozen cornish pixies were released, and thankfully professor Khanna made it clear that he wasnt going to abandon them. After ducking from a pixie that was flying over her head Rose swished her wand and casted "Arresto Momentum!" aiming at the nearest pixie. Hoping to slow it down.

Your professor hadn’t specified you needed to work in pairs but your foolish choice to dilly dally worked in this pixie’s favour. It flew, as though released by a bow and it was the arrow, towards the Ravenclaw. It grabbed that silky looking dark hair with both tiny hands.
It TUUUGGED!
Goodness! Did you feel a few hairs part with your scalp?

This human was far more proactive than most. That charm almost hit the pixie it had been directed at. Almost. It gave an almighty cackle before lounging at the small human. Dodging other flying objects, it took hold of his right ear.
GOT YOUR EAR!

This pixie was young and nimble. It rolled mid air, expertly manoeuvring from its path. Nice try, human girl! Just excuse this little creature for a moment while it loosened your tie in the blink of an eye. With an evil shriek, it zoomed off into the air again, waving a triumphant fist with the red tie trapped within wickedly strong fingers.
