Default The Time Room

This room is, by far, the brightest one in the Department of Mysteries. Clocks can be found anywhere there's a stable spot. A huge crystal bell jar stands at the far end of the room, and it is from this that the sparkling light comes. The bell jar stands on a desk and appears to be full of a billowing, glittering wind. Inside the jar, rising and falling on the glittering current, a tiny object moves through an endless loop. The object is a small humingbird, but it doesn't always stay so; at the bottom of its circuit, the bird is within its egg. As it rises, it hatches and grows into a mature bird by the time it reaches the apex of its path. On the way back down, it becomes a fledgling bird and then reenters its egg, which reforms around it. This progression of time repeats over and over within the jar. Also, a large glass-fronted case stands against a wall within which many Time-Turners of various sizes rest on shelves.

To the very left as you walk in, a dark oak desk sits in front of the whiteboard with a few, thin file folders on it. The nameplate is hard to read, but as you walk closer the name reflects off of the golden background as 'RaeAnn Asteria'. The desk was so neat on it that it was hard to tell if anything had ever been touched. There were few pictures on the desk, if any at all. The drawers were locked, full of personal and departmental items that need not be disturbed. It was so perfect, it was hard to imagine what could be in there.

So step on in, and don't be afraid. The ticking will fade after a while.

"Got it." Cassandra said, giving a sharp nod. Quickly finishing her Time-Turner, she got up and put it in the box. She started walking around the room, looking for the source, like her boss was doing.

She walked towards the bell jar, to make sure it, and the bird, were okay. Nearing it, she saw a pile of something just a few feet off. Crouching down, Cassandra saw that the pile was made up of wooden bits. Wooden bits that looked as if just broken. "Meredith! There are some wooden bits over here." She looked around.

ooc: Not quite sure if this was what you wanted the explosion to be... I'll edit if nessecary

Meredith rushed over to where Cassandra was eying some wood bits on the floor near the giant hourglass. Looking closer, she also noticed a bit of sand. Meredith glanced up, looking to see if she could find the source of the wood. On the wall next to the hourglass, there was a row of Time Turners hanging from some nails. Meredith noticed that one of those nails did not have a Time Turner on it . . . This was bad. Very bad.

Meredith looked up at the other three women in the room. "Are you all paying attention?" She asked. "What I'm about to do is very important for you to know, just in case this happens to you." Meredith's voice still had an eerily calm tone to it.

Cassandra watched as Meredith rushed over to where she was, and inspecting the bits. When she looked up, Cassandra followed her gaze, seeing the nail with no Time-Turner. 'This must be bad.' She thought. 'Didn't she say that if they're broken they could corrupt the space time-continum?' She stared blankly at her findings, now known as the small explosion, a broken Time-Turner.

Cassandra just nodded in response to her bosses question, still staring at the bits, but paying attention all the same.

Meredith looked at each of her employees, making sure they were paying attention. Once she was sure she had their attention, Meredith used her wand to conjure up a dustpan and carefully swept up the wood bits, the glass and the sand. She was especially careful to sweep up every grain of sand that was on the floor. She brought the dustpan over to the table that she was working at before, grabbing a new hourglass on the way.

"All right," Meredith said once everything was gathered on the table. "This is a little more complicated than just putting sand in a new hourglass. Does anyone have any ideas about how we might do this?"

Cassandra watched as Meredith used her wand to conjure up a dustpan, and swept up the wood bits, glass, and sand. She put a mental note in her mind of what her boss was doing.

When Meredith asked if anyone had any ideas, Cassandra gave a sharp "No, ma'am." She glanced out of the corner of her eye at her colleages. 'Wonder if they know anything? Might. Who knows what Hogwarts taught them...'

Candra left her seat and walked over to where Meredith and Cassandra were standing. She peered at the dustpan thoughtfully...

"Isn't it perhaps possible to use a... Separating spell?" Candra asked slowly, chewing her lip absently as she mulled over whether separating spells actually existed. Her accent came out a little too English than usual, but it was her first day--she was still awfully nervous.

And to top it all off, she'd never got around to properly introducing herself--like this was the time.

Meredith listened to Cassandra and Candra's answers, then considered Candra's idea. That hadn't been quite what Meredith had been thinking of, but it just might work.

Meredith smiled encouragingly at Candra as she said, "That's a good idea. Would you like to try it?" she asked.

The older woman looked at Candra from the corner of her eye when she appeared. 'Separating spell? Hmm...' Cassandra looked towards Meredith, wondering what her boss was thinking about the suggestion. She gave a slight smile at the answer Candra got. 'I wonder what she will do to fix it...'

Candra's eyes widened involuntarily as her boss asked her whether she'd like to try out her suggestion.

Momentally unable to form long words, Candra stuttered her reply. "Y-yes, of course..."

Once again biting her lip in her anxiety, Candra slowly moved nearer to the table and fingered her wand thoughtfully.

This... This will be tricky.

Candra carefully moved her wand tip to hover just above several large fragments of glass, and, taking a deep breath, flicked her wand upwards sharply.

Her non-verbal spell worked, and several of the major glass fragments hovered softly above the dustpan. Candra twisted her wand slightly, and the pieces slowly turned in mid-air, sand and miniature glass fragments falling gently back to the pile. Candra flicked her wand again, allowing the larger glass fragments to land softly in a separate pile.

Candra heaved a huge sigh of relief, knowing that this was only the easy part.

Glancing back for a split second, Candra proceeded to use the same tactic for the larger parts of wood, and that, proving successful like the larger glass fragments, left only the tiny fragments of glass and wood and sand.

Peering closer at the minuscule, shattered pieces once more, Candra moved a small section aside and tried her technique out on that. She managed the separate the generally visible wood and glass with some difficulty, but the tricky part was separating the almost-sawdust-like-pieces of wood and tiny, hand-splitting parts of glass from the delicate grains of sand.

Unsure whether to continue, or whether there was a better way, Candra hesitated and looked back at Meredith for a moment.

"Should I continue, uhm, sir...?" Candra paused at the last word, unsure whether this was what Meredith preferred to be addressed as.

It's going to be tricky, and awfully risky if I continue in this method... But I'm pretty certain I'm doing it right... I'm pretty certain I can finish what I've started if I must!

Meredith watched Candra carefully, ready to help if anything went wrong. However, Candra seemed to be a very talented witch, and she did everything perfectly.

When Candra paused, Meredith smiled at her encouragingly and said, "Keep going. You're doing a really good job so far." Meredith didn't like being called sir; it was too formal for her. But Candra seemed to be concentrating hard on separating the glass pieces, so Meredith chose to ignore that for now.

Candra smiled slightly at the praise Meredith gave her, not realising she was blushing with embarrassment as well.

Turning back to the final pile of miniature fragments, Candra copied the same technique she'd used earlier. But this time she worked slower, once again removing the glass first; then the sawdust-type-stuff; and when she had finally finished, she inspected several small pile of sand with her wand, making sure it was only sand that was left.

"Phew..." Candra heaved a huge sigh of relief that this nerve-racking experience was over, and she slowly turned back to face Meredith and Cassandra.

"I've finished the separating!" She smiled, happy that nothing had gone wrong... This time.

Meredith watched as Candra performed the hardest step of the procedure. "Good job!" she complimented when Candra was done. "Now you just have to put the sand in a new hourglass. Another crisis averted," Meredith said, smiling proudly at Candra. She was glad she had such clever employees.

"That was a very good way to do it, but it wasn't the only way," Meredith continued. "Can anyone think of some other ways to do that?" There was another way that Meredith had been taught on her first day in the Time Room, and she wanted to make sure her employees knew the various methods they could use to fix problems such as the one they just had.

"Heh..." Candra turned a deep scarlet red as she was praised.

As Meredith asked about another possible method, Candra shook her head softly, wishing her hair could fall in front of her face whilst she was in her suit, if only to hide the happy grin that was slowly forming on her lips as she turned back to the table.

Carefully, Candra lifted the sand with her wand, and let it fall into the Hourglass. She sealed it, and placed it gently in the 'fixed Time Turners' box, before returning to the table and clearing away the fragments.

After she'd finished, Candra joined Meredith and Cassandra and pondered other methods that she could have used.

Cassandra gave a small smile at Candra when she fixed the problem. Looking at Meredith when she spoke, she began to think. "Perhaps the Locomotor Charm?" She suggested, thowing out any ideas that came into her head. "Reparo might work. Maybe the Switching Spell aswell." She bit her lip, wondering whether they could be used or not.

ooc: Those are the only ones I know that might work. :]

"Hmm," Meredith said, listening to Cassandra's suggestions. "The Locomoter charm would probably work, but you'd have to be really careful about using Reparo. And I'm not quite sure what you mean by the Switching Spell. Would you like to explain how you would use that?" Meredith asked Cassandra.

ooc: I hope Cassandra's explaination will make sense/work...

"Hmmm, let's say you have a ziploc bag full of something. Then there's the broken Time-Turner. You would switch whatever was in the bag with the sand, making the sand now be in the bag, and whatever was in the bag, where the sand use to be." Cassandra replied after thinking it over. She wasn't exactly sure if that would work, though. But she hoped Meredith would somewhat get the point/gist of it.

Hoping to step away from embaressment for herself, the dark haired woman asked, "What about you, Meredith? What's the best way?"

Ah! I get it!

"I think I know what you mean..." Candra half-smiled as she thought over what Cassandra had just said.

Just then, Candra heard Cassandra ask Meredith something, so she turned to face Meredith to see what her answer was.

"I see now," Meredith said after listening to Cassandra's explanation. "That is a good idea. I've never tried it, but it should work."

In response to Cassandra's question, Meredith explained, "Well, on my first day in the Time Room, I was taught a very simple way to fix this problem. You use a summoning spell to collect the sand separate from the wood and glass shards, then transfer the pile of sand into a new hourglass."

"However," Meredith continued. "There is no single best way to do this. The best way is whatever way works best for you and is quickest for you to do is the way you should use if you ever have to deal with this problem."

Cassandra smiled when Meredith said it should work. 'I hoped it would of. And make sense...'

Cassandra mentally slapped her forehead. "Of course! How could I have forgotton the summoning spell?" She said, rolling her eyes at herself. She put a mental note in her head: 'Summoning Spell, summon sand, transfer into new hourglass.'

'No best way? So whatever works best and quickest for you would be the best way...' She thought, barely nodding her head. 'I hope this won't happen again...'

Looking towards her boss, Cassandra asked, "So, Meredith, do you want us to resume fixing the Time-Turners, or something new?"

"Well," Meredith answered, "We still have some Time Turners that need to be fixed. So why don't we try some of the methods of separating the sand from wood and glass shards that we just talked about. In order to be safe, this is what we're going to do: take of the top of the hourglass and use your wand to break it. Put the pieces of wood in one of these special bins," Meredith waved her wand and a few time-warp-proof bins appeared on the table. "Add the sand, then practice the various methods of fixing the problem. This way, you will be practicing in a safe environment and when it happens for real, you will know which way works best for you," Meredith instructed.

Cassandra listened to her boss' orders, nodding every other sentence. "Yes ma'am." She said, before walking back to her 'workspace'. She picked up an hourglass on her way.

She sat down, and noticed that she had been holding her wand the whole time of the minature explosion. She gave a small "Heh..." under her breath before starting to work.

She carefully took the top off of her hourglass, and then used a non-verbal spell to break it. She used her wand to glide the wood peices to the specified box. Cassandra decided to use Candra's way first. The Separating Spell. She repeated her colleague's steps, though a bit more slower, as to not messing up. After a while, she succesfully completed fixing her hourglass.

She stood up, and walked over to the bins, setting her fixed on in, took a new one, and walked back to her seat. She took the top off, and broke the top, again. She would use the Summoning Spell, this time. She flicked her wand, and the sand instantly separated from the hourglass. She then transfered the sand into a new hourglass. She had completed another one.

Cassandra, again, stood up, walked over to the bins, and set hers in.

ooc: I hope that's okay! I can edit if nessicary.

ooc: Sorry I wasn't more clear. But you did what I meant for you to do.

Meredith watched as Candra and Cassandra tried the various methods of separating sand from the wood shards. Meredith considered trying some of the methods her employees had listed herself, but in the end she decided it was better if she was available to help if she was needed. She picked up a Time Turner and began fixing it the normal way, eyes and ears open to any problems that might occur in the room.

The oldest woman grabbed another on her way back. 'The box is sure depleting quickly...' She thought, sitting back down. She was going to use her own suggestion, the Locomoter charm. She took the top off, and broke it. "Locomoter sand." She muttered under her breath, flicking her wand. The sand rose up, and Cassandra directed it into a new hourglass. Another one completed.

She, again, stood up for what seemed like the twentith time that day, and walked back over to the bins. Carefully dropping hers into the fixed box, she grabbed a new one. And walked back to her space.

She would not even try to do the reparo, if Meredith said it was as hard as she said it was. And she would let Meredith test out the switching spell, also. So she just decided to do it the normal way, the summoning spell, or the separating spell for the remainder of the hourglases she took/fixed.

Meredith walked over to where Cassandra was working. While watching the two women work, Meredith noticed that Cassandra seemed to be almost done, as she had tried out several of the methods that had talked about earlier. "So how's it going?" Meredith asked Cassandra. "Have you figured out which method works best for you yet?"

Cassandra glanced out of the corner of her eye at Meredith when she walked over, before continuing her work. She was glad that the box was almost done, and wondered what they would have to do next. Just as she was finishing one of her last ones, Meredith spoke up.

"I'm doing fine, Meredith." She answered, the corners of her mouth curling upwards. "Either the summoning spell, or the locomotor charm is working the best. I can't decide which. The separating spell seems to take longer time." While she was saying this, she was fixing her last share of hourglasses, using the locomotor charm.

She used her wand to move her fixed ones to the box. She glanced at Candra and Parker before turning her gaze back to Meredith. "I wonder how they're doing..."
